Dear Friends: I am pleased to welcome you to the 2017 donor’s issue of The Word. This special issue is dedicated to the people from around the world that contribute to the continued betterment of the University of the Incarnate Word.

The fall semester has been a bustle of activities at UIW. We had successful openings for the new Student Engagement Center and the new School of Osteopathic Medicine at Brooks.

Move-in day for first-time and returning students was a blur of boxes and heavy lifting. The annual pinning ceremony drew over 600 firsttime students and their families.

It has also been a whirlwind for me since August, when I officially joined UIW as the University’s 10th president. In the past few months, I have met with benefactors who have shared uplifting stories about Incarnate Word’s impact on South Texas and other corners of our state. Learning of their support for our Mission has been truly inspiring.

I have attended alumni gatherings in San Antonio and McAllen that were great fun. The two cities may be separated by hundreds of miles, but the alumni in both share a deep, enthusiastic bond for UIW that is infectious. I look forward to attending many more alumni activities in the future.

An event unique to UIW that my family and I have been eagerly anticipating is our first Light the Way ceremony on November 18, when a million Christmas lights will light the campus as the kick-off to the holiday season in San Antonio. This year’s ceremony will include

a new winter festival that is sure to enhance the evening’s joyful spirit. Please check the University’s website for additional information on Light the Way. With the fall semester quickly coming to a close, I would like to say that I am humbled by the opportunity to serve as president of the University of the Incarnate Word. It is an honor to join a vibrant, Catholic university that for 136 years has provided thousands of people with meaningful opportunities to pursue a faith-based college education. It is equally gratifying to know that our graduates are contributing to the lives of many people well beyond the borders of San Antonio.

As you read this issue of The Word, please remember that the momentum generated by your generous support permits us to continue fulfilling our goal of offering educational opportunities within a context of faith. The steadfast support of donors is what allows UIW to have a lasting effect on the residents of San Antonio and South Texas.

COUNT US IN UIW employees don’t stop working on behalf of the University’s students once the business day is done. For more than 30 years, staff members from every corner of campus have contributed to the Employee Campaign, a giving program that helps ensure students continue to receive an exceptional level of education. Whether by funding scholarships, improved infrastructure or more resources, the Employee Campaign’s impact is felt throughout UIW. “Historically our employee giving

is among the highest in the nation, even when compared to schools like Princeton and Harvard,” said Rosie Garcia, director of development. “We hope you’ll say ‘count me in’.”

Last year, the campaign raised more than $150,000. This year, the campaign raised even more from em-

ployees who embraced the campaign’s call to action: “count me in.”

All told, the campaign generated $166,000 from generous UIW staff members over six weeks. Employee Campaign might have concluded, but there are still opportunities to offer support. Learn more at uiw.edu/give.

Power Up:

Solar House Successful at Five Years The diminutive 764-square-foot house, tucked between the Barshop Natatorium and the McDermott Center on main campus, may not take up much space, but in the five short years since the Solar House was completed, it has generated some big, sustainable milestones.

With a net-zero daily consumption, the energy produced by the Solar House far exceeds its needs, which allows it to partially power the Natatorium. In fact, the 68.4 megawatt hours of energy produced over five years could power three stadiums.

The Solar House’s construction and daily operation were planned to produce the lightest possible environmental footprint. By utilizing recycled and sustainable materials, an energy-efficient heating and cooling system and appliances, and a number of multi-purpose features, it has offset the equivalent of energy generated by 1,050 trees.

It pays to be green. While the average residential energy bill in San Antonio is approximately $102 per month, the Solar House generates an estimated $1,500 in yearly savings.

The Lessons of Emmett Till A packed-to-capacity crowd greeted Dr. Roger Barnes, professor and chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, this fall when he hosted author Devery S. Anderson at the UIW Concert Hall. Anderson, who penned Emmett Till: The Murder That Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement (University Press of Mississippi), discussed the murder of 14-year-old Till, the landmark case that followed and the aftermath of the killers’ acquittal. Nationwide outrage and protests would put civil rights into the national spotlight and help spur the movement.

The book is the first comprehensive account of the 1955 case, and is a critical read for those seeking deeper understanding of the country’s relationship with civil rights.

UIW Honors Program Celebrates 10 Years For nearly 10 years, the Honors Program has provided highly motivated UIW students with opportunities that challenge their intellectual curiosity and encourage their academic and professional endeavors. This program was formed by a group of dedicated professors who collaborated to design a curriculum that met the needs of highreaching students.

Via more individualized attention, customized courses and opportunities for social justice trips and study abroad, Honors Program students can better tailor their university experience. According to Jean Loden, the program’s director, 341 students have joined over the last 10 years. Among them, 39 percent graduated with University Honors or went directly to professional school without a bachelor’s degree. The anniversary year is fast approaching, but the celebration has already begun. Visit uiw.edu/honors for more.

While deeply rooted in the Catholic faith, UIW boasts a rich and spiritually diverse community. The University now counts some five major faith traditions among its increasingly diverse and international community, and a new grant awarded to the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership and Sustainability is helping to strengthen the ties between the faiths and between faculty and students.

For a full year starting this fall, the Interfaith Innovation Grant, given by the Interfaith Youth Core, is funding 15 faculty members to learn about multiple faiths, attend gatherings and take part in special service learning endeavors alongside their students. The initiative may see participants working on behalf of Burmese or Libyan refugees, Jewish community centers and city departments. What’s more, information about multiple faiths will also be posted online for everyone’s benefit.

“We are faced with different doctrines, but we can all agree that we can work together to make the world better,” says Sr. Martha Ann Kirk, CCVI, professor of religious studies and the grant’s director alongside Dr. Lopita Nath, UIW associate professor and chair of the History Department.

The grant comes at a critical time when interfaith awareness can help inspire deeper understanding and respect for different faiths and the people who practice them.

“Prejudice has been growing in the U.S., but in the face of it, we can do all sorts of good,” says Kirk. “What are the best things we can do? Learn and love.”

Exploring the Future of Engineering and Education Faculty and staff from UIW in San Antonio joined Universidad Incarnate Word Campus Bajío in Irapuato, Mexico to present a two-day workshop in September about enhancing engineering education in Mexico. The engineering field is entering a new Golden Age of opportunities for advancement and breakthroughs in a number of areas including energy development, biomedical technology and artificial intelligence, just to name a few, and the Bajio region is at an epicenter of new progress.

The free workshop was open to the public and sought to engage industry and academic leaders about how they

envision and work to shape the future of the field. Among the presenters were Dr. Michael Frye of the UIW School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering Autonomous Vehicle Systems (AVS) Laboratory, and Tomás Goldaracena, alumnus and intern for a special

For the ninth year in a row, the University of the Incarnate Word was named one of the nation’s “Great Colleges to Work For”. Published by The Chronicle of Higher Education, the annual list assesses institutional data, workplace policies and employee surveys, and acknowledges excellent academic workplaces.

Meanwhile Money Magazine counted UIW among its extensively researched list, “711 Best Colleges for Your Money,” which takes into consideration educational quality, affordability and alumni success, according to the publication.

The University was also recognized as one of the “2017 Safest College Campuses” in the state by Niche.com. The website determined its list by evaluating statistics, student reviews and data from the U.S. Department of Education.

“Shakespeare in Prague” Highlighted Intersection of Theatre, Style and Politics “The play’s the thing wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the king.”

Shakespeare may have written the famous phrase for Hamlet, but since the days of the Bard, directors, costumers, actors and designers have put the principle into play using theatrical productions to make statements when speaking out was dangerous.

That’s the focus of “Shakespeare in Prague: Imagining the Bard in the Heart of Europe.” Presented in only two cities in the U.S., the expansive exhibition ran this fall at the Kelso

Art Center. Via creative costuming, sets and direction, artists could draw parallels between the timeless themes of classical theatre and the current climate. Through artifacts from Czech and Slovak productions – a militaryinspired gown for King Lear’s Regan, a thoroughly modern 1920s dress for Ophelia, and an ominous sketch of the set of Julius Cesar –the exhibit revealed how Shakespeare’s plays became vehicles for artists’ political and social expression even during Nazi and Communist eras.

These Future Scientists are True Gems Legos, computer programming, underwater robots, coding and creativity – for 125 middle school girls they were the components for the perfect summer. For the third consecutive year, the University has been the site of miniGems, a free-two week summer camp teaching programming and STEAM, or science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, to girls in grades 6 to 8.

Hosted by Autonomous Vehicle Services Research and Educational Laboratory, and co-directed by Dr. Michael Frye, of the engineering department, and Dr. Sreerenjini Nair, of the physics department, the camp’s goal is to introduce girls to science and engineering, and spark

interests in the fields.

Over the two-week camps, attendees built EV3 Lego Mindstorm robots utilizing skills in robotics and computer programming. Campers also put their talents to work constructing underwater remotely operated vehicles via the SeaPerch program. Members of the Navy Recruiting District in San Antonio oversaw as the girls competed with their robots in the UIW Natatorium.

MiniGems was the first camp in San Antonio designed exclusively for middle school girls that focused on autonomous ground, air and underwater robots.

Since its founding in 2015, miniGems has grown from one week to two, and by

more than 100 participants thanks to a $94,950 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission. With such innovative approaches and dedicated organizers, miniGems will continue to foster future scientists and inspire invention.

FROM IDEA TO INSTITUTION WITH IMPACT

The UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine’s founding dean, Dr. Robyn Phillips-Madson, reflects on building a school and the next generation of physician leaders

W

ith groups of medical students walking through an expansive campus just off one of South San Antonio’s main thoroughfares, the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) looks like a long-standing institution, not a school in its first full year.

But it was only five years ago that the school was a mere idea to address the shortage of primary care physicians in South Texas. As the school year starts, the medical school has students going through their first unit of coursework, a second cohort of students in the Master of Biomedical Science program, and a new round of interviews for the incoming class in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program.

“It’s busy, but it’s going very well,” said Dr. Robyn Phillips-Madson, the medical school’s founding dean. “The faculty and learners are working very hard.”

Long road to opening The process of developing more physicians began in 2012, when then-UIW president Dr. Louis Agnese Jr. introduced the idea of creating a medical school.

From there, Provost Dr. Kathi Light and then-Chancellor Dr. Denise Doyle began the preliminary work of establishing a medical school. In part because of South Texas’ urgent need for primary care physicians, and in accordance with the Mission, the administrators decided that UIW’s school would focus on osteopathic medicine, which generally takes a more holistic approach to health, and largely sends more physicians into primary care medicine.

After exploring multiple locations for the endeavor, the University decided on Brooks in the heart of San Antonio’s South Side. It proved to be an ideal site.

“We want to make a difference in the community, but the community needs to drive that, not us,” Madson said. “We don’t come into a community and say, ‘This

is what we need.’ We say, ‘What do you need? What do you need in your future physician workforce?’ ” As part of the community conversation with local physicians, San Antonio leaders and South Side residents, Madson and her team gathered information to guide the building of a mission and curriculum.

Once they created a curriculum, administrators hired faculty and staff to teach it. Then they had to decide what kinds of students they would seek to meet that mission, and the best way to identify and measure those qualities.

From there, the attention shifted to finding sites where students could perform their clinical rotations and develop a strategic plan for research that the school will undertake.

At the same time, the school needed to develop support services for the students, to address the nationwide high rates of depression and suicide among medical students and physicians.

Addressing the need The medical school allows UIW to further its goal of helping the community of South Texas — and beyond — address the critical need for more primary care physicians.

About half of Texas counties have a shortage of primary care physicians, and the Association of American Medical Colleges projected last year that the United States would face a shortage of up to 35,600 primary care physicians by 2025.

So the addition of some 150 new physicians each year comes at a critical time.

“Primary care really is the answer to health care problems in the United States and around the world,” she said. “If you have a robust primary care system, where

AN INVESTMENT IN US ALL

Irene and Dr. Eduardo Caballero champion community health and tomorrow’s doctors

A

mong the School of Osteopathic Medicine’s (UIWSOM) historic red brick buildings, one in particular stands out.

Just to the west of the grand main building is the Eduardo Caballero M.D. Building, the UIWSOM campus’ only named building. Housing the anatomy lab and large interactive classroom, it’s a hub of innovative thinking, where some of the day’s pressing health care needs are examined and bright minds consider whole-person care. That’s an exciting prospect for Dr. Caballero.

“When physicians from UIWSOM begin practicing in South Texas, we will see further positive change in the health of people who need it the most,” said the benefactor.

A Legacy of

Impact

The land that the School of Osteopathic Medicine inhabits has a long and storied history.

While it’s changed over its 100 years, it’s had a significant impact on the military, education and health fields. These are a few of the moments that make it so important.

have on a community. Until 2013, Caballero practiced in a clinic where his father, a physician and surgeon, had also practiced since 1962. His brothers are also doctors. Now, he makes occasional house calls. It’s likely that the area can hardly remember a time when there wasn’t a Dr. Caballero.

He’s seen generations of patients within the same family, cared for injuries resulting from hard, physical work, and found time to treat people with limited economic resources.

“There are excellent physicians now practicing all over South Texas, of course, but we need more since the population is increasing," said Caballero.

Having more primary care physicians available to people in South Texas would provide more essential resources and help bridge the gap between urgent and preventative care.

When Caballero and his wife, Irene, discovered that the University of the Incarnate Word was starting a medical school, they saw an opportunity to help develop future physicians and address that need. When they learned more about the UIW Mission and that the faith-based medical school would emphasize compassion, they were moved to take part.

“The purpose of the Mission is a

noble one emphasizing charity whenever possible,” he said. “My reward is going to be that Irene and I helped, in a small way, to bring medical care to our state and perhaps other parts of the country.”

In smaller communities, the doctor is held in high esteem primarily because he is very well known and has assisted his friends and neighbors with medical problems within a closely knit community. People remember sincere care and acts of kindness.

Helping to foster future doctors and participate in the future of health care is a rewarding experience that the Caballeros hope others take part in.

“I invite members of the medical community, the business community, educators and all citizens of South Texas in general, if they are able to, to assist the Mission, because an investment in medicine is an investment for us all.”

Brooks’ first incarnation was as Brooks Field, one of the first military flight training bases in the country. It would soon also house the School of Aviation Medicine.

Brooks Field becomes Brooks Air Force Base, which would go on to serve the military community for more than 50 years. It would also usher in an era of important medical and aviation research at Brooks.

President John F. Kennedy dedicated the School of Aerospace Medicine on Nov. 21, on what would become the steps of the School of Osteopathic Medicine. This would prove to be his last official act as president before his assassination.

The air force base becomes Brooks City Base, a new militarycivilian partnership that would serve both communities and further the development of the area.

The Future

The UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine opens. City leaders, physicians, religious and members of the community gathered to celebrate the “gem of the South Side,” during its grand opening. The first class of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine students began study in July.

In its short existence, UIWSOM has already established itself as a center for communityfocused health innovations. The school was awarded a $407,000 grant to develop a health program that addresses mental health and chronic disease to improve overall wellbeing.

ust off the entrance of the School of Osteopathic Medicine’s main building, a vibrant, glossy painting welcomes all who enter. “Soaring and Serving” by artist Lucy Peveto was the first work of art commissioned for the school.

It was donated by UIW Board of Trustees member John Peveto and his spouse Bonnie – also the artist’s mother- and father-in-law.

The 6-foot by 6-foot piece, with its cool blue tones and fluttering butterflies, offers passersby an opportunity for a moment of pause to contemplate something beautiful – surely welcome during otherwise hectic days of challenging academics.

“Soaring and Serving” is a mixed media artwork created using epoxy resin on a wooden surface as opposed to canvas. Peveto’s technique incorporates paper appliques to provide texture and a blowtorch to create the shiny, glass-like surface, one of her trademarks. Another is the use of real, natural butterflies from Mexico and Indonesia. The butterflies she uses have lived a full life and are not bred to be killed, she says.

“I always use butterflies in my work,” says Lucy. “I was an attorney for eight years, and they represent my second career.”

Transformation is at the heart of many of Peveto’s works, another reason “Soaring and Serving” is so fitting in the UIWSOM, where students are undergoing their own metamorphosis. Students who arrive eager to learn about their chosen profession may exit fundamentally changed. Not only will they be academically ready to meet the challenges of the next phase of their medical careers, but they’ll be strengthened by the Mission to be compassionate caregivers.

Among the larger butterflies in vibrant blue and graphic black and white are two diminutive butterflies with striking red and black wings, chosen as a deliberate nod to UIW colors.

Peveto’s works have been featured across the Southwest, Florida and Hawaii including at the AnArte Gallery in San Antonio, New River Fine Art in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Corazon Contemporary in Santa Fe, N.M. and now too at UIWSOM.

hile it might be the newest building on campus, the Student Engagement Center (SEC) was built on a foundation of history and tradition. Located at the former site of Marian Hall, which included a residence hall, dining hall and gathering place, the SEC will carry on its role as the hub of student life.

“It will be a place for living and learning, where residents find a place to gather and for commuters to have a home away from home,” said UIW President Dr. Thomas Evans at the official ribbon cutting. “The SEC is about the importance of engagement, of ensuring that students are fully involved in the life of this institution and its people.”

In fact, students have been at the heart of the endeavor since demolition began in 2015. Not only were their lifestyles and needs critical to its design, but students also signed their names to a special beam that was used in its construction. Simply put, UIW students are part of the SEC’s DNA. Here are just a few things they can look forward to: Welcome Home Dr. Evans referred to the Student Engagement Center as the campus’ living room, and with good reason. Nearly every space of the 122,500-square-foot building was carefully designed to welcome students to their home away from home. Meeting rooms, lounge areas and individual seating encourage group or independent study. The SEC also offers plenty of options for indoor and outdoor liv-

ing and learning. Giant windows throughout the first, second and third floors flood the SEC with sunlight and views of the campus and surrounding city. An expansive patio offers a relaxing space to study or socialize.

Smart SEC In addition to the lush lounge areas, the Student Engagement Center also boasts state-of-the-art design. End tables, consoles and study desks feature charging stations, and flat-screen television sets can be found in common and dining areas. It’s also home to the HelpDesk@SEC and a media center with a touch-screen printing kiosk.

Seat of Government, Hub of Activity The SEC is also the new hub of student activity. It’s home to the Student Government Association and other organizations related to student life, including Campus Engagement, Student Conduct, Greek Life, Campus Activities Board, Veterans Affairs and a Student Organization Complex, just to name a few.

Shopping and Dining It might be referred to as the bookstore, but the three-story Cardinal Shoppe houses so much more than that. In addition to the essential texts and supplies every student needs, they can also find computers and accessories, collectibles and Cardinal gear.

What’s more, Red’s, located at the SEC’s basement level, is home to Luciano Pizzeria, a pub, and entertainment center.

Service in the Storm In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, the UIW community got to work

W

hen Hurricane Harvey made landfall, it was the strongest hurricane to strike Texas since the 1960s. Coastal cities felt the brunt of the Category 4 storm’s impact. The destruction was widespread. Devastating rains and flooding razed homes and damaged infrastructure. Communities were left reeling and faced the monumental task of recovery.

In response, University of the Incarnate Word students, faculty and staff came forward determined to help.

A Campus Committed “The campus community as a whole wanted to be active and engaged,” said Dr. Ricardo Gonzalez, director of the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership and Sustainability, which is leading hurricane relief efforts and working with University Mission and Ministry and Campus Engagement.

Offers to help emerged from every corner of the University. To ensure that they didn’t conflict or cause confusion, the Ettling Center focused efforts to benefit four major charities – the San Antonio Food Bank, Catholic Charities, the American Red Cross and the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center.

Organizations dove in – student athletes raised funds for the Red Cross; the Communication Arts Department and Mission and Ministry collected cleaning supplies and blankets; the Department of Alumni and Parent Relations collected baby supplies; and the new campus restaurant, Pasha Express, donated 100 percent of the proceeds from first week sales to charity, just to name a few projects. Sr. Walter Maher CCVI, vice president of Mission and Ministry called the community together for a special prayer.

Students Engaged Paul Ayala, associate dean of Campus Engagement, was in the middle of Welcome Week coordination when the Ettling Center asked to coordinate efforts. “I had a whole week of programming, so I knew it would be difficult, but I said I could help with logistics, planning and marketing,” Ayala said. “I hit send on that email, and almost immediately three student organizations emailed me. Very quickly we had six, seven, eight organizations who wanted to provide relief efforts for those affected by the hurricane, and the momentum was sustained throughout September.”

followed immediately by the Community Health Education Students. The Student Nurses Association wanted to host a blood drive, while the Business Club collected donations for pets. Student leadership, Greek organizations and clubs stepped up as well.

The fact that it was the first week of classes and momentum was building for the year ahead didn’t slow the students’ drive to help. According to Gonzalez, donations of food, water and clothing filled up four U-Haul trucks; the blood drive saw some 40 students in a few hours; and the charities received upwards of $3,000.

“It gives you hope,” said Ayala.

A Culture of Caring The work is far from over, said Gonzalez.

“What began as Hurricane Harvey relief turned into disaster relief.”

Soon after, Mexico was shaken by earthquakes and Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico. UIW’s response to Harvey helped establish a model for effectively addressing crisis. Part of that includes year-long service. Gonzalez is coordinating a trip with the Alumni Association to Texas beaches in the spring, utilizing the Cardinal Computer Technology Recycling program to benefit flooded schools along Texas’ Gulf Coast, and working with other departments and campus entities to support relief for Puerto Rico and Mexico.

While offering crisis aid is important, there are issues that are in perpetual need, he said. Charities such as the American Cancer Society, Eva’s Heroes, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, San Antonio Pets Alive!, for instance, are still in need of assistance. The Ettling Center creates opportunities to support them.

“I am honestly very proud of UIW, especially of the students and how they continue to respond,” Gonzalez said.

Meteorology graduates on the air and in the eye of the storm

T

he commitment to serve wasn’t limited to those on campus. Alumni of the Department of Meteorology were in a unique position to help assist and inform the public.

Carolina Jones, weather graphics producer and meteorologist for AccuWeather, was at the Pennsylvania-based station at all hours of the day and night before the storm hit. “We knew about a week out that it would make landfall in Texas and it was going to be significant,” she said.

“Everyone was saying it was going to be catastrophic. It was going to be really bad, something we had never seen.”

It was personal for Jones, a 2015 graduate, whose friends and family are based in Texas. At work, she created graphics with her team that communicated urgent weather news, including inches of rain anticipated and potential tornado warnings. But, she was also checking in with Houston friends to ensure they had plans in place. “It was surreal,” she said.

In times of approaching storms, when fear and panic are in danger of setting in, directness and accuracy are paramount. Meteorologists are charged with providing the best, most accurate, up-to-the-minute information and arming viewers with knowledge so they can make life-saving choices. In a way, they are broadcast’s first responders.

She recalled the lessons from her former broadcast and meteorology professor Alex Garcia, who stressed clarity when communicating complicated scientific information.

“That was important for forecasting for Harvey, we needed to create graphics that were simple and easy to read, so people would know what was happening, and understand right away what they would need to be prepared,” she said.

That’s also a principle that alumnus Mike Saenz, weather producer and bilingual meteorologist for The Weather Channel, utilizes in his work.

“I am the only bilingual meteorologist at The Weather Channel,” said Saenz. “One of the things we have recently done is expand coverage to reach out to the audience in the Spanish-language community.”

Some areas don’t have bilingual meteorologists, he said, so providing clear forecasts in times of major weather events, is critical. Saenz, the former chief meteorologist at Telemundo in Oklahoma City, puts viewers’ comprehension and safety at the forefront. Via graphics shared on the air and via social media, his messages are wide spread. He often recalls the lessons of Dr. George Frederick, the UIW adjunct professor who taught him critical news techniques.

While weather science is at the core of what these meteorologists do, UIW’s Mission also serves as a guiding tenet. “I never even realized how much attending UIW has changed my perspective of helping others,” said Jones. “I think the community service we put in to earn our degree is so important because you learn to be selfless and have empathy.

I try to always put myself in another person’s shoes and this was the basis in creating a clear message for people preparing for Hurricane Harvey. I thought about what I would want to know if I was in the path.”

elanie Bass was born into a family that serves. Three of her four parents are physicians, her brother is in medical school, and her grandfather was a dentist and oral surgeon.

Bass, a student in the School of Physical Therapy, has embraced her family tradition and put the call to serve into action. Instead of heading to relaxing beaches, Bass spent Spring Break 2017 on a church trip to Northern Vietnam. The endeavor was organized by Alamo Community Church, which teams up with a humanitarian organization based in Vietnam twice a year to provide assistance to communities with a special focus on school-age children.

Carrying suitcases filled with children’s shoes donated by the Children’s Hunger Fund, Bass and her fellow church members arrived in the rural area to make an impact. Throughout the 10-day trip, the group taught basic, but critical, hygiene practices like hand washing and teeth brushing.

Though the children spoke no English and communication was largely made through translators, laughter and hand motions broke the language barrier.

“It’s a very impoverished area, but the kids are so polite, respectful and grateful, so it’s very easy to interact with them,” she said. “They enjoy doing the personal

hygiene activities. They appreciate things that we as Americans take for granted, like having a toothbrush.”

She and the team washed the children’s feet and hands, clipped their nails and combed their hair. They ended the hygiene session with a Polaroid picture, so the children could know what they looked like because, Bass said, many have never seen themselves in a mirror.

Bass also utilized her UIW physical therapy training on the trip. She not only

helped teach first aid and CPR to village teachers, but addressed the burns some of the parents and children had on their hands from cooking over open flames.

“Once the skin starts healing it contracts, when it contracts it loses elasticity and you lose movement and function,” she said. “We did stretching activities so they

didn’t lose function of the hands.”

Her efforts and her dedication to service earned her recognition from her UIW peers. Her professor, Dr. Mona Bains, nominated her for the ARISE Graduate Student Social Justice Award.

The Office of Research and Graduate Studies established the ARISE Award to recognize currently enrolled, post-baccalaureate students who have demonstrated exemplary service related to a social justice issue, and who have unselfishly sought to bring positive change in the community. The award’s name is based on the Bible verse “Arise, shine; for your light is come” (Isaiah 60:1).

“It was amazing,” Bass said. “It was a humbling experience to be there.”

In September, she ventured on another mission trip to Oaxaca, Mexico along with students from UIW’s schools of physical therapy, pharmacy and optometry to conduct a pop-up clinic with various health care professionals, but the trip was cut short due to the earthquake that hit the area and caused widespread devastation.

Bass hopes to return to Vietnam in the future with her church, and after she graduates, she hopes to continue many short-term medical mission trips. “I really believe that ... real change happens with consistency.”

n Friday, Aug. 25, Hurricane Harvey made landfall, bringing dangerously high winds and severe flooding to the Texas Coast and Houston area. Harvey destroyed or seriously damaged several cities and towns. When I heard Harvey was coming, I prayed, “God, be with Texas, and use me how you see fit to help those in need after the storm.” God responded.

As a consultant, I was sent to Port Aransas and Port Arthur to assist a Texas-based company with their disaster relief efforts. Utilizing their food trucks, we provided almost 15,000 tacos for first responders, residents and volunteers throughout the Coastal Bend and Port Arthur.

In preparation for the task, I asked God to prepare my spirit as I knew I would be serving and meeting with residents who lost their homes, cars, keepsakes, places of worship, restaurants, schools – everything!

As I drove through Mustang Island and Port Aransas just four days after the storm hit, my heart shattered as I saw the devastation first-hand. It was worse than I imagined.

I met with hundreds of people impacted by the storm. I expected to see lots of tears and broken spirits; instead, I witnessed the complete opposite.

Almost every person I spoke with had this supernatural spirit of resiliency. They were quoting scripture.

“For nothing will be impossible with God”(Luke 1:37). It was their mantra, their motto, it was the glue that kept them together.

The same people that lost all their

earthly possessions, mustered up this incredible strength and faith, and declared ‘The Word of God’ over this disaster.

I was surprised by their positive outlook. Not one of them felt defeated.

Tired? Yes. Overwhelmed? Yes. Defeated? No! They praised God that their loved ones were safe, and they were so appreciative of the support from the first responders, volunteers and the corporate citizens that stepped forward to help. Every “thank you” they gave us ended with a “God bless you all.”

My testimony: God is our first responder, and He provided that supernatural experience that only He can.

My fellow Cardinals and University of the Incarnate Word community, thank you for praying over the people of Texas impacted by the storm. Thank you for praying for those offering disaster relief and aid to the victims of Harvey.

We felt your prayers. I witnessed your prayers in action.

After graduating from high school, Maldonado moved to Austin to study visual art at the University of Texas, but transferred to UIW the following year to change gears and focus on theatre.

During his junior year at UIW, Maldonado took his first design class with theatre professor Margaret Mitchell and knew right away that costume and set design was his calling.

“Designing for the stage encompassed everything I was very interested in,” Maldonado said. “I was passionate about performing, but once I was able to mesh both worlds of theatre and studio art, I really fell in love with it. I had the drive, so I had to see it through.”

“Arnie has great artistic intuition and vision, so he has the ability to be analytical and expressive at the same time,” Mitchell said. “He knows how to tell a story through design. It’s always great to see an alum be very successful at making a living doing something he or she loves, and using their chosen degree to do it.”

After earning his BA from UIW in 2002, Maldonado was accepted to Tisch School of the Arts at New York University on a full scholarship. He considers his time at NYU as “theatre boot camp.”

“I learned a lot, and got to meet people working in the industry. Eventually my circle of collaborators got bigger.”

Forming part of that circle is director Daniel Alexander Jones, who has worked with Maldonado on several theatre productions, including The Owl Answers (And Sun), Duat and Jomama Jones: Radiate, which played at Soho Rep in New York City and the Pillsbury House Theatre in Minneapolis. Maldonado designed two complementary, but different, sets for the production.

“Arnulfo is a masterful designer who cares deeply about his craft, about the projects he chooses to work on and about the people with whom he collaborates,” Jones said. “With each project, he presents his vision and invites you into an intimate relationship with the environment he

creates. It’s a thrill. He makes every room he is in better.”

Today, Maldonado who said he finds a lot of inspiration from modern artists, photographers and architects sees himself getting called upon more as a set designer for contemporary new works. He enjoys collaborating with developing playwrights and building an original vision from the ground up.

“It’s not just about designing a play, it’s about delving deeper into the dramaturgy,” he said. “For me, I get to create a body of work that will have a time stamp. [My sets] might only live in this world for a short time, but there is a visual and historic record of it and, for me, that is important.”

Enzo T. Pellegrino ’02 BBA CFP was named one of America’s Top Next-Generation Wealth Advisors 2017 by Forbes Magazine. Pellegrino founded Texas Legacy Wealth Management, an independent wealth management firm, in 2005 and is the company’s president. The Texas-native caters to his clients by planning their retirements and managing their investments. He is often featured in the media as a wealth management expert, including on KSAT-12 and News Radio 1200 AM as the “Money Guy.” The alumnus has also served as a past member of the Board of Trustees, UIW Planned Giving Council and as a past president of the Alumni Association. Pellegrino was the only wealth advisor named to Forbes list and was ranked 12th overall in the entire state of Texas. Forbes generated the list by evaluating a number of quantitative and qualitative data, such as “investing process, experience level and integrity,” and determined these to be the industry’s next leaders.

The Word spoke with Dr. Tina Siller, the president of the UIW Alumni Board of Directors, about the benefits of membership. (Hint: There are no membership dues and plenty of reasons to join.)

What are the benefits of being a part of the Alumni Association?

This year’s theme for the Alumni Association is “Reconnection’. So I encourage alumni to reconnect with their fellow

alumni, faculty, staff and students. The benefit associated with this is the sense of affiliation with the institution and others from the institution. We all have the Incarnate Word experience in common, and it’s nice to be able to share that experience with others by attending events and networking.

What events can members look forward to attending?

We currently host our monthly Thirsty Thursday mixers every second Thursday of the month. Alumni can also enjoy the annual Light the Way festivities on Nov. 18, Cardinal Couple Mass on Feb. 11, 2018, the Easter Egg Hunt on March 24, 2018, and the Ring Ceremony on April 8, 2018.

UIW Alumni Embrace Role as Ambassadors With their experience and insight, alumni shine as key to recruitment

hen Heather Rodriguez ’06 BA, ’11 MA accepted the position as dean of enrollment at the University of the Incarnate Word in May, she received many congratulations and feedback that sparked an idea for her new role.

“When I announced I took the job, I had my fellow alumni reaching out to me saying, ‘this is such a great thing – UIW is giving back Heather Rodriguez, to their own by hirdean of enrollment ing their graduates to serve the University and mentor other students,’” Rodriguez shared.

That is when the idea hit Rodriguez and she asked herself, “why not capitalize on being an alumna of the University?” Alumni are in a unique position to share their institutional knowledge with authority and expertise and in ways future students can relate to. Who could better represent the student experience than those who lived it?

“I am a two-time graduate of UIW, I have been a student and lived the UIW

Mission,” she said. “What a great opportunity we have to utilize alumni to help recruit students – they can share their perspective and experiences, and how UIW has impacted their lives in different ways.”

As a first-generation college student, Rodriguez shared that UIW has molded her into the leader she is today.

“UIW made college a reality for me and if it was not for the University, I would not be in this leadership role,” she said. What’s more, students facing obstacles to their

education can take heart in the accounts of others who were in similar positions and yet, found success. “For us to be able to share these stories with potential students who feel higher education is not an option can really change the paradigm and make them see what they can do and that it is possible.”

Rodriguez said her goal is to have graduates talking about the brand, and showing how they are living the word of UIW. “We are building the leaders of tomorrow at UIW,” Rodriguez said. “Helping the University in student recruitment is a way for our alumni to give back, just as the Sisters of Charity gave back and started Incarnate Word.

“Part of the Mission of UIW aims to educate men and women who will become concerned and enlightened citizens within the global community,” she said.

“This is a way for alumni to continue living the Mission.”

McCracken Alumni Referral SCholarship In addition to recruiting, alumni can also give first-time first-semester students an opportunity to help fund their education.

The McCracken Alumni Referral Scholarship was established to honor the legacy of UIW alumni passing the torch of knowledge to new students. It is named for Richard McCracken, former dean emeritus of alumni.

The deadline to apply for the Spring 2018 semester is Dec. 1, 2017, and the deadline for the Fall 2018 semester is Feb. 1, 2018.

Dr. Pat LeMay Burr, distinguished chair in international business, has been elected to head the National Fulbright Association Chapter Committee that oversees the activities of 60 Fulbright chapters in the world. She is serving her second year on the National Fulbright Association Board of Directors and is the only Texan on the 23-member board. Burr is also the founder and president of the San Antonio Fulbright Association.

Dr. Anna Castaneda Tabet, assistant professor in the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions (SNHP), has published “Exploring and Comparing Anxiety Levels on Patients Admitted Twice to a Detox Unit with a Primary Diagnosis of Alcohol Dependence and Withdrawal: A Pilot Study” (Tabet, A, Oliver, J., and Diaz, R.) in the Journal of Addiction, Research and Therapy. Tabet also presented the topic at poster presentations at the National Symposium of Nurse Practitioners in Keystone, Colo. and during Research Day at UIW. Dr. James Chapman, assistant dean of clinical affairs and director of clinics in the Rosenberg School of Optometry (RSO) earned a Masters of Jurisprudence (M.J.) in Health Care Law from the Loyola Chicago School of Law. Carleton, professor of kinesiology in the SNHP, presented “Left Behind the Proficiency Barrier: Strategies for Successful Motor Development,” and “Bringing Back the Excitement of Teaching: Get Over Burn Out” at the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance 33rd Annual Summer Conference in San Marcos, Texas.

Dr. Russell Coates, clinical assistant professor and director of outreach programs in the RSO, was honored with the Ed Zlotkowski Faculty Award for Service Learning. Coates was honored for his efforts to establish regional and international mission trips for optometry students.

Dr. Esmeralda de los Santos, marketing professor in the HEBSBA, delivered two presentations in September. De los Santos and Ana Gonzalez, director of Instructional Technology, presented the poster, “A Survey of Tried and Tested Technology Tools in Undergraduate Online Business Courses,” developed and written by de los Santos, Dr. Nürşen Zanca and Ana Gonzalez, at the Quality Matters Connect Conference in Fort Worth, Texas; and “Tracking Artisanal Trade: The Quest for Fine Mexican Craftsmanship,” at the 2017 Southwest Texas Fulbright Symposium in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Caroline Goulet, founding dean and professor of the School of Physical Therapy, Matt Walk, assistant professor, alumna Monica Mendez, students Alexandra Cooper and Melanie Bass, and translator Karol Walk, traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico to participate in the Los Quijotes annual health mission. The UIW team was joined by faculty and students from Instituto Profesional en Terapia y Humanidades (IPETH) to form the Medicina Fisica team, which saw 250 clients over four days.

Dr. Mary M. Hoke, PHCNS-BC, RN-BC, ANEF, professor and dean of the SNHP and Nursing Faculty, and members of the nursing continuing education committee led the presentation of the 2017 Sr. Charles Marie Frank Lecture and Poster Session. Guest lecturer Ann Kurth, PhD, CNM, MPH, FAAN, Dean and Linda Lorimer Professor of Nursing at Yale University presented “Planetary Health: Nursing's Challenge in Preserving Human Health.” Twenty-three poster presentations were accepted from a wide array of submissions from students, faculty and the community for the Sr. Charles Marie Frank scholarly poster sessions. Three nursing experts served as judges including Dr. Mary Elaine Jones, the former UIW Brigadier General Lillian Dunlap Chair in Nursing, Dr. Jennifer Cook, a UIW alumna and former member of the UIW graduate nursing faculty; and Sr. Teresa Stanley, former dean of the School of Nursing.

Dr. Lori Kels, MPH, assistant professor in the UIWSOM, published the works, “Considerations for Dermatologists when Treating U.S. Military Service Members,” (Kels CG, Kels LH.) in the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology; and “Legal Ramifications of Ambiguous Clinical Guidelines,” (Kels CG, Kels LH.) in JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Sr. Martha Ann Kirk CCVI, professor of religious studies, was appointed as the UIW representative to the Inter-University Higher Education Committee, subcommittee of the History and Education Committee, which contributes to the development of San Antonio Tricentennial 32

observations. Kirk presented an exhibit on Incarnate Word history at the San Antonio Tricentennial Summer Institute for Educators 2017. She also led “Standing with the Paris Climate Agreement, Celebrating and Dancing with Creation,” a performance at the Blue Hole Headwaters Sanctuary. She is the director of an Interfaith Innovation Grant of $4,000 awarded by the Interfaith Youth Corps for an educational series to increase interfaith understanding in faculty and their students, developed with Dr. Lopita Nath, associate professor and Department of History chair, and Dr. Susan Hall, professor in the Dreeben School of Education and the director of UIW’s Center for Teaching and Learning.

Dr. Anil T. Mangla, director of public health and associate professor for biomedical research in the UIWSOM, published “Using System Science to Inform Population Health Strategies in Local Health Departments: A Case Study in San Antonio, Texas”, which demonstrates a plan to save the city $400 million dollars in diabetes prevention. Mangla has also authored “Evaluating Oral Fluid as a Screening Tool for Lead Poisoning” about a less-invasive and child-friendly lead-screening technique using oral fluid instead of a blood sample. He has also published “Enhancing Empathy and Communication Skills among Future Healthcare Providers through Partnership with a Community Museum” and “A Possible Case of Aerosol Transmission of Rickettsia typhi.” He has successfully implemented a school-based vaccination drive for the Southside Independent School District in collaboration with the University’s nursing and pharmacy departments to provide 544 doses of vaccine to children ages 4 to 17.

Mangla is a national subject matter expert on infectious diseases and represents UIWSOM in the media on public health. Mangla was awarded $400,000 from the Hogg Foundation to improve mental health in District 3.

Dr. William Miller, associate dean for academic affairs and professor in the RSO, has been named Educator of the Year by the Texas Optometric Association. At UIW, Miller is responsible for curriculum development and has stressed the importance of integrating technology. He has also worked with other health professions schools to create opportunities for interdisciplinary education.

Dr. Julie Nadeau MSN, RN, CNE, associate professor and Bachelor of Science in Nursing chair, was selected by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing to serve as a consultant for Holistic Admissions in Academic Nursing. The consultants assist colleges and universities that receive funding through the Nursing Workforce Diversity Program (HRSA-17-063) to enhance holistic review of applicants to their nursing programs.

Margaret Mitchell, professor of theatre arts, and the Art Department hosted and celebrated the opening of the art exhibit, “Shakespeare in Prague: Imagining the Bard in the Heart of Europe,” on Sept. 8. The exhibition is a collaboration between the University of the Incarnate Word, the Columbus Museum of Art (CMA), the Folger Shakespeare Library and the National Gallery in Prague. Mitchell is currently co-curating U.S. artwork for an international costume exhibition, “Innovative Costume: The Next Generation,” which will be held in the A. A. Bakhrushin State Central Theatre Museum on Red Square in Moscow in June of 2019.

Dr. Katherine C. Payne, assistant professor in Management Information Systems in the HEBSBA authored “Development and Validation of the Information Systems Creative Self-Efficacy Scale,” which was accepted to the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences; and “Examining the Learning Effects of Live Streaming Video Game Instruction over Twitch,” which was accepted to Computers in Human Behavior.

Dr. Héctor Pérez, associate professor of English, presented the paper “Al(lure) of the Globalized Factory City,” at the Postcolonial Studies Association annual convention in London. The paper analyzes fictionalized representations of the femicides of Ciudad Juárez and proposes new critical approaches.

Dr. Brett A. Richardson, coordinator of music education and director of bands, has been invited to present at the 2018 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention, February 14 - 17, held at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in San Antonio.

Attended by nearly 25,000 music educators, college students and industry professionals, Richardson will present two workshops on musical score study, job longevity and maintaining a positive influence in the profession.

Dr. Roberto Saldivar, assistant professor of marketing in the HEBSBA, had his work “Country of Origin and Ethnocentrism in the Context of Lateral, Upward and Downward Migration” accepted in the International Marketing Review.

He also presented the paper “How Many Ads Can You Spot? Investigating Consumers’ Knowledge of Native Advertising” at the New York State Communication Association Conference.

Peace Builders

2017 Rotary Peace Fellow Dr. Nürşen Albayrak Zanca participated in an intensive 12-week course on peace studies and conflict resolution at the Rotary Peace Center in Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. “I sincerely believe that at UIW I have a great potential to promote and create desire for peace among young, international minds,” said the professor of economics in the HEBSBA. “My career as an economist puts me at the right place to inspire for a culture of peace and tolerance. I will continue to empower, educate, and increase the effectiveness of peace builders in my community.”

Dr. Stephanie Schmiedecke Barbieri, low vision rehabilitation optometrist and chief of low vision service in the RSO, received a certificate of commendation from the Veterans Health Administration for significant faculty contributions to the 2nd edition of the 2016 VHA-EES Continuum of Care Online Low Vision Rehabilitation Course. She also presented six hours of continuing education credit classes for the RSO South Padre CE; topics included low vision rehabilitation, diabetes and cosmeceuticals. In October, she presented two posters, “Identifying Desirable Characteristics of Stand Magnifiers among a Low Vision Cohort" (S. Schmiedecke Barbieri, M. Valdes, J. Kozloski, J. Kasprenski, N. Sorrell) and “The Utility of Optical Coherence Topography Angiography in Detecting Early Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy and Monitoring Regression: A Case Report” (N. Sorrell, S. Schmiedecke Barbieri, C. Majcher) at the American Academy of Optometry meeting in Chicago.

Dr. Ana Vallor, associate professor of biology, was selected as a member of the Small World Initiative Partner Instructors (SWIPI) Initiative. The Small World Initiative (SWI) was formulated at Yale University and piloted in 2012 to encourage the numbers of undergraduate students pursuing careers in science while addressing a worldwide health threat – the diminishing supply of effective antibiotics. As part of SWI, students from

around the world isolate bacteria from soil in their local environments that could lead to novel antibiotics. SWI has grown rapidly to include more than 180 participating schools across 35 U.S. states, Puerto Rico and 12 countries. Vallor attended the initial SWI Partner Instructor training which was held at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut in July. Approximately 70 UIW students in the Fall 2017 General Microbiology laboratories are participating in this program. At this time, students have collected and are processing soil samples from a variety of on and off campus locations as well as from areas in and around the San Antonio and South Texas area. It is expected that Vallor and a number of her students will showcase their work to the community at a variety of scientific conferences and the Small World Initiative symposia in 2018 sponsored by the American Society of Microbiologists.

Dr. Karen Weis, professor and Brigadier General Lillian Dunlap Endowed Chair in the SNHP, will direct a study titled Mentors Offering Maternal Support (M-O-M-STM), a prenatal program building maternal self-esteem, coping and resilience, and decreasing depression. The study will be funded through a $1.9 million grant awarded for the three-year, multisite study focused on military women and pregnancy.

Cardinal athletics welcomes new athletic director Dr. Brian Wickstrom

ccording to Dr. Brian Wickstrom, Cardinal fans have good reason to be excited about the future of UIW athletics.

Wickstrom, the University’s new athletic director, was named to his post just a few weeks before the start of the 20172018 school year.

While he might be new to the Cardinals, the Nebraska native has a long history in collegiate sports. He spent the last four years as athletic director at the University of Louisiana-Monroe and previously worked at six other universities. He holds degrees in educational leadership, sports administration and business administration/finance from three universities.

“The opportunity to come to a great community like San Antonio, be part of the Incarnate Word [and President Dr. Thomas] Evans’ vision of where the university is going, [and take] a program through Division I — it was all something that appealed to me,” he said.

Wickstrom is known for promoting a comprehensive positive student-athlete experience and is eager to help Cardinal athletics reach new heights. A former Kansas State University athlete, Wickstrom takes seriously the “student” part in

“student athlete.”

“Incarnate Word is a great academic institution and it gives us a chance to recruit student-athletes at the highest level – who want to be at the Division I level but also want to receive a great education,” he said.

“One thing I learned at Louisiana-Monroe is when people say it’s never been done before, it didn’t mean it couldn’t be, it just hadn’t,” he said. “I think it’s really good motivation. With everybody working together, things can be done that haven’t been done on a

“We’re going to find our niche, but our niche is going to involve giving all of our sports the opportunities to compete for conference championships,” he said.

Wickstrom said he, wife Celina and their five young children all feel blessed to live in the country’s seventh-largest city, and be involved with an expanding athletic program that is surrounded by a growing buzz in the community.

“I think everybody wants to be part of the success,” he said.

“This is an opportunity to get engaged.”

Synchronized Swimming Invitational On Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, the Synchronized Swim team will host the UIW Invitational. UIW’s three-time South Regional Champion team includes four Athletic All-American swimmers, among them Natalia Vega, who competed with Team USA in Tokyo, Japan as they prepared for the 2020 Olympic Games and in Budapest, Hungary in the FINA World Championships.
