Dear Friends, Spring is in the air! Students, faculty, administration, alumni, and friends with joy, and a few trepidations, look forward to the blossoming of seeds sown and the awaking of flowers in a multitude of colors. Throughout the school, faculty and staff are watching as students grow in knowledge, skills, and confidence.

Students are experiencing increased confidence as they achieve competencies within their chosen health care areas of study. Faculty are celebrating the new community health education degree and warmly welcoming students declaring this major. New minors in Applied Leadership for ROTC and public health recognize student achievement and expand professional horizons. Employers and supervisor are continuing to seek out our brilliantly colored blossoms, our SNHP graduates. Seasoned SNHP faculty members delight in the rapid assimilation of their new faculty peers who are increasing the depth of our cadre of outstanding, student-centered faculty.

As we celebrate the season, may we always remember those who have helped to make the joy possible.

We extend a special thank you to Dr. Gary Norgan, professor of nursing, and Mrs. Esperanza Barron, dean’s administrative secretary, for their outstanding contributions over these 20-plus years. Our wish is for your retirement journeys to bring you the same joy with which you have brought to us!

UIW Students Participated in Philadelphia’s NACNS Event

our students from the MSN

Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) track presented at the annual conference of the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists in Philadelphia.

“For the first time, I got to see what APRNs are doing across the country which is very interesting.

Many of the presentations focused on the very same issues we have talked about in class or see at our own hospitals. Safety issues, skin breakdown, falls, etc. It is amazing the different approaches that are taken to tackle the same problems,” Joshua Goldberg, who presented his project entitled “Improving the Discharge Process to Decrease Turbulence During Peak Hours of Admissions,” said.

Holly Kimball presented “Correlation Between Frequency of Attendance at a Weight Loss Clinic and the Amount of Weight Loss;” Nicole Trevino presented “The Relationship of Door-to-Needle Times for Tissue Plasminogen Activator Administration and

Clinical Outcomes in Acute Ischemic Stroke.” Trevino said she felt inspired and motivated to move forward in her career path.

Also, the conference helped her to tie many of the teachings together.

Fort Knox, Tennessee. Christina Moore (2014) U.S. Army, recently returned from Kuwait and is currently at Walter Reed. Eric Tovar (2014) U.S. Air Force is stationed in Alaska.

Amina Tharpe’s presentation titled “Identification of Medication Administration Errors: A Direct Observation of Nursing Practice,” won second place in the poster competition.

Recruiters from all over the country were busy recruiting students and nurses to their hospitals. Harris Health System representatives had great things to say about two UIW graduates – Penny Boman (2013) and Manikandan Padmanabhan (2013) who have been employed in Houston since graduation. The University of Wisconsin Health Care System had equally great things to say about Emmanuel Quarcoo (2012) who has been a CNS in their system for over 3 years.

he Ila Faye Miller School of

Nursing hosted an open house for the community celebrating the grand opening of the UIW Nursing Cardinal Wellness Center (NCWC) at UIW’s Bowden Eye Care and Health Center on Feb. 3, 2016. The open house was an opportunity for the community to become familiar with the services offered at the center since it first opened its doors in October 2015.

The center is “a trifecta that supports APRN students, the people of San Antonio, and the UIW mission,” Dr. Mary Hoke, dean of the UIW Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions, said. The NCWC is a nursemanaged clinic that offers Texas Health Steps well child checkups and vaccines through Texas Medicaid and the Vaccines for Children Program. Its staff includes four FNPs, one RN, and one Pharm D. The focus is on preventative health for low-income children covered under Medicaid. In addition to child vaccinations, the center also provides adult vaccinations to uninsured individuals through the Adult Safety Net Vaccination Program.

“My child has had her eye exam and I found out she needed glasses. And now the nurse

practitioners and nurses have caught her up-to-date with her Texas Health Steps examination and shots. They even helped me find a primary care doctor near my home,” Sulema Mendoza, first patient and community health educator for Eastside Promise Neighborhood, said. Besides providing well child checkups and vaccines, the NCWC has formed a partnership with the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) Head Start program. The partnership provides on-site well child examinations at local Head Start Centers. Head Start is a Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) program that provides local agencies with funds to deliver Head Start services.

Head Start programs “promotes school readiness for children under five from low-income families through education, health, social and other services” (HHSC, 2015).

In Texas, SAISD Head Start serves over 2,000 children. A program requirement is that children must be current with periodic well child exams. If not current, agencies must assist parents with obtaining these examinations. Approximately 50 percent of SAISD Head Start enrollees for 2015-16 were not current with well child checkups.

These delinquencies can result in decreased funding for agencies that do not meet this requirement.

2016, the NCWC conducted over 400 well child exams (~ 38% of needed physicals).

The NCWC serves as an interprofessional education site for undergraduate and graduate nursing students, athletic training students, and pharmacy students.

“The Nursing Cardinal Wellness Center is a wonderful asset to both the eastside community and UIW. It provides a place for faculty practice, student learning, and most importantly access to preventative health care services for the children in the area, ” Dr. Diana Beckmann-Mendez, assistant professor of nursing, said.

The undergraduate nursing students and athletic training students have assisted with Head Start examinations and well child checkups. While the graduate nursing and pharmacy professional students have participated in a number of community outreach events. Through these events pharmacy and nursing students have gone out into the community to administer vaccines to both children and adults. They have attended events at St. Phillips College, St. Francis Episcopal Church, and a refugee clinic in northcentral San Antonio where they have administered over 60 vaccines. Future events are planned with SAMM Ministries, and the SAISD and Edgewood ISD.

UIW Students Success Secure Return to DEU

T

his semester, Level II nursing

students, enrolled in Adult Health I, have the opportunity to return to the Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) at Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital (MSTH) for their clinical rotation. Under the DEU model clinical instruction is strengthened when students are paired with staff nurse mentors who closely work to link theory and research with practice. The benefits of the DEU model of clinical instruction are twofold: an academic-practice partnership that creates a consistent, enriching learning environment that promotes the development of clinical reasoning while generating opportunities for health care organizations to reduce the nursing shortage.

UIW and Methodist Healthcare System (MHS) identified and successfully implemented the first DEU unit in the Fall 2015 semester.

Now in the second semester, the staff nurses, in coordination with

the assigned clinical instructor, Dr. Katie Chargualaf, work closely with students to meet course objectives by prioritizing the client’s plan of care, skillfully executing nursing interventions, and building critical thinking skills.

In response to the success of the first DEU unit, the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Methodist Healthcare System expanded the dedicated education unit model to Northeast Methodist Hospital and Methodist Stone Oak Hospital in February 2016. A total of ten nurses from both hospitals were

Traveling Another Road After 27 Years

D

r. Gary Norgan has been a

beacon at the School of Nursing for almost 30 years. Although his teaching career spanned both graduate and undergraduate programs, his biggest legacy was to the undergraduate program where he guided many students through his Adult II Medical Surgical nursing class. He delivered the content in the classroom and he made the Veteran’s Hospital his clinical home where he helped students navigate and learn all about nursing care of adults.

Gary was a pioneer in technology at the school of nursing. He was the first to adopt the Blackboard platform for his face-to-face class.

He served as a mentor for other faculty who were struggling with how to use Blackboard’s newfangled technology in the 1990s. He was also an early adopter of Parscore testing shepherding (sometimes dragging) unwilling and technologically challenged colleagues. He was always patient with technology questions from

colleagues and would find the time and the words to get resistant faculty to feel comfortable using technology. You could always count on Gary for the latest interesting electronic gadgets and toys.

During his era at the school of nursing he has served on every committee at least once and has occupied a number of leadership positions within the school.

Additionally, Gary has served on many university committees and served as the Faculty Senate President for 2 years. He was the recipient of the Sr. Charles Marie Frank Transformational Leadership award in 2007.

As a researcher, Gary joined the Nursing Faculty Research Team convened by the Dunlap Chair Dr. Mary Elaine Jones, in 2005. He was an active team member and collaborator on a number of projects including cardiovascular health among athletes, the use of text messaging cues to promote physical activity among freshman college students that was funded through the NIH-EARDA infrastructure grant project. He also participated in a sub-group to develop curricular strategies to prepare undergraduate nursing students to manage difficult people in difficult situations using conflict management skills.

Over his time at UIW, we have watched Gary grow from being a father of 2 small boys, to witnessing those boys become gainfully

employed members of society.

We now delight in his stories in his new role of grandfather.

We’ve heard about and seen his carpentry skills whether it’s crafting small wooden ornaments for Christmas or building a cabin on the lake. His latest passion – photography, has captured many of us in all too candid poses in unsuspecting moments.

“Behind every successful man there is a great woman” is very true for Gary. His wife Cindy has been his rock for many years and has become a friend to many of us at the school of nursing.

Although we will miss you, we will secretly be jealous that every day from now on will be a play day!

Enjoy this new chapter in your life my friend.

Esperanza Barron Retires as The Dean’s Secretary After 25 Years

O

ver the years, My Favorite,

Esperanza (why, she is the only Esperanza I know) and I (her favorite Dr. Carleton, why, I am the only one she knows) have become working friends and just plain good friends. Her wonderful personality and her working ethics have always been attractive to me. Our work together is a combination of seriousness and laughing. She always has a smile for me when entering her office and even bigger

smile when I leave (is that telling me something?). I love the stories about her dogs and her grandchildren, especially the one who listens to no one. She would always end the stories of this one granddaughter with “pobrecita.” For years I thought she was calling her a placebo?!

Some of her stories were about growing up in Mexico and about her family. Her loving stories of her mom and dad, his type of work, the large family, and going to work with her dad certainly shaped the person she is today. She mentioned that the kids had to play inside the big house in a large hallway and it did not bother her mom with the racket and games. I could tell how much she loved her family and growing up with all her brothers and sisters. She extends that kind of loving care to her work family.

Esperanza’s caring manner has a positive impact on all of the faculty, staff, and the dean in the SNHP. She is always ready to help in all situations. When we have had individuals pass to the other side, you can see the love she had for that individual and the pain in her heart as she dealt with their death.

Her smile is there for all of us and her work is always done with the success of the individuals involved and the success of the school.

I have been trying to talk her out of retirement for two years now. I have failed. I will miss her with every fiber of myself. My prayers will be for her to enjoy retirement and be so busy that she will wonder when she ever had time to work. Esperanza means hope in Spanish and we all hope only the best for her.

The Best Memories are Made Around the Table

he County Line was the setting

for this year’s annual nuclear medicine preceptor dinner on Thursday, March 31 providing an opportunity for students to show their appreciation for the guidance that the preceptors provide throughout the program. “This dinner allowed us

to interact with our preceptors on a more social level,” John Morales, nuclear medicine senior, said. All preceptors put in large amounts of work and dedication to help students build the foundation that will ultimately guide them throughout their journey in the world of nuclear medicine. “So often we become so focused on the finish line. Sometimes we fail to enjoy the

journey. That night I was reminded of the wonderful steps during my journey,” emphasized Christina House, nuclear medicine senior.

All preceptors allowing students at their sites volunteer their services.

Most preceptors are either alumni or have been working with UIW for some time.

They deserve the utmost respect and gratitude for their commitment to the students and the program.

Without the preceptors’ volunteer service, gaining the on-hand experience needed would be quite difficult.

Throughout the night the preceptors were treated to dinner, door prizes, and a slideshow that displayed pictures of the students’ experiences in the program. Looking back on that night, Sarah Flores, nuclear medicine senior, noted that working

on the slideshow made her realize how they have all grown closely together as a class.

During the dinner, seniors of the nuclear medicine program, Delinda Moore, Sebastian Ramirez, and Christopher Franklin thanked them for their patience and expressed their pride of being a part of this niche. “I would like to thank y’all from the bottom of my heart, but for y’all my heart has no bottom,” expressed Maram Alqurashi.

Laura came to UIW in 2004 as an adjunct clinical instructor, became a visiting professor and then finally a full-time assistant professor. Laura is a neonatal nurse practitioner and in 2011 she was appointed the founding director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice program-- at that time only the second DNP program in Texas.

Laura is known for her ready smile and positive attitude, her creativity, and her grace under pressure.

She is resolute in the face of a challenge—she will find a way to overcome any barrier and she will do it with style and good humor. In addition to her leadership in

She has led federally funded research and service teams that include faculty from pharmacy, education, fashion design, business and the liberal arts.

One of her faculty colleagues notes that Laura’s growth over the past years provides a model for the evolution of a faculty-as-teacher—the ability to merge the quest for and sharing of knowledge from direct influence on the individual student to influencing the quality of education for the many. Multiple letters of nomination talked about Laura’s creative teaching style—using synchronous and asynchronous technology and blogs to stay in touch with distance students. Traveling across Texas to check in with students doing clinical in rural areas. A common thread in all the nominations is Laura’s personal touch and encouragement that motivates students to reach her exacting standards.

SN & HP Events New Tradition at the Red Dress Day Fashion Show and Health Fair

On Feb. 2, 2016, Michael Moon, associate professor, at the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions introduced the photography contest as a new event to the 2016 Red Dress Fashion Show and Health Fair in order to expand opportunities for others to support heart health awareness. Faculty, staff, and students at the university were invited to submit an original photograph on canvas depicting the color red, heart health, or something related to the American Heart Association’s Go Red Campaign in order to raise awareness of cardiac disease in women.

Four submissions were received for

9

the contest, all from nursing faculty or their family. Kelli Gerardi submitted “Caribbean Flower” and “Heart of Cozumel”, Rob Meyer submitted “Hopeful Heart,” and Michael Moon submitted “Thunderbird.” Attendees at the event voted for their favorite piece via texting. Each piece was displayed in the Kelso Art Center Student Gallery throughout the month of February. The artwork was available for purchase with proceeds going to the Red Dress Fashion Show and Health Fair committee for future activities supporting heart health. Based on feedback from attendees, the contest will be held again next year.

Hungry Hippo Life

Cardboard Kids

Dean Mary Hoke and Dr, Bill Carlton participated in the human size Hungry Hippo during the Health and Wellness Fair that the Human Performance and Sport Management organization arranged to encourage get fit movement.

The Community Health Education club, Nataly Velez, Lorena Ortiz, Amanda Gamez, Gabriela Bentancourt, Dr. Carleton, Dylan Fields, Elaine Candelaria, Nicole Lim, Adrianna Cordero, Adrianna, Elizabeth De La Rosa and Bianca Soto, made the cardboard for kids to distribute around UIW campus to bring awareness to childhood abuse. They donated $200 towards the cause.

Sister Fitzpatrick Award for Academic Achievement

Sister Charles Marie Frank Leadership Award

The Nuclear Medicine Science program was founded by Sister Antoinetta Fitzpatrick, CCVI (dec) in 1977. She created the program rich in physics, chemistry, biology, and math, a legacy that has continued to this day. Sr. Fitzpatrick used to say, We graduate Nuclear Scientists that choose to be Nuclear Medicine Technologists, among other available vocations. Students receiving the Sr. Fitzpatrick Award exemplify the academic excellence she envisioned of Nuclear Medicine students.

Peer Award for Clinical Excellence (PACE) Students elect one of their peers for this award. This person is chosen as the student that other students prefer to be their athletic trainer, nuclear medicine technologist, or nurse, if they or a family member were ill and in need of care.

BG Lillian Dunlap Award for Leadership & Clinical Excellence Brigadier General Lillian Dunlap (dec), the first graduate of Incarnate Word to achieve the rank of General in the Army Nurse Corps from 1971-1975. General Dunlap was a member of the board of trustees for the university and a great supporter of the nursing program. The award recognizes an RN-BSN (ADCaP) student for academic achievement, leadership ability, and clinical excellence.

Students Accomplishments: Honors and Awards Recipients 2016 Nursing Freeman Lee Award The Dr. Amy Freeman Lee Scholastic Achievement and Service Recognition Award honors long-time board president, Dr. Amy Freeman Lee. The most prestigious student award at UIW, this award is given to one student in each academic school at the university. The award recognizes academic excellence, service to church, and service to the community. The names of the honorees for this award are placed on a plaque located in the office of the vice president of academic and student affairs.

Peer Award for Clinical Excellence (PACE)

The Nightingale Society was formed on the sesquicentennial of Florence Nightingale’s call to nursing in 1837. The advancement of nursing science and accomplishments are the hallmarks of the society’s organizational conscious. As a member of the Nightingale Society, UIW annually selects the top ten percent of nursing students for membership.

Robert "Bobby" Patton Leadership and Guidance in Athletic Training Education Award This award is in recognition of an Athletic Training Clinical Preceptor who has demonstrated an overwhelming willingness to help students and desire to further student development in the clinical environment.

Robert “Bobby” Patton was a pioneer in athletic training education in Texas, and served as program director of the first accredited athletic training education program in Texas (Texas State University at San Marcos formerly Southwest Texas State University).
