Mention San Antonio and the word “Fiesta” quickly comes to mind. Mention the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) and its core values are quickly recounted. These connections have many UIW faculty and staff using the word “Fiesta” as an overall acronym (except for the ‘a’) for the UIW’s values. The word “Fiesta” provides a framework that connects UIW values with Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions (IFM SNHP) goals and activities. Faith, as an understanding of the holistic person and respect in all interactions, is a fundamental value in exchanges between faculty and students, faculty and staff, and faculty to faculty. As faculty members role model civility, they are assisting students to understand the impact of civility and to more fully understand that civility has an impact on patient/client safety. Innovation, as creative methods that address spiritual and economic needs, is evident in the work of the faculty in exploration of avenues to promote student success. Three faculty-lead IFM SNHP Taskforces are identifying effective strategies to increase graduation rates. The newly approved community health education degree provides students with an additional avenue into the health care field for undergraduate students. Education, as a strategy directed at development of concerned and enlightened citizens, is the central mission of the IFM SNHP.
