Welcome to the 2014 donor’s issue of The Word. This is our way of saying “Thank You” to the many special people from around the world who contribute to the continued betterment of the University of the Incarnate Word.

We kicked-off the fall semester on a high note by setting another enrollment record.

We now have 9,940 students, which is twice the number from a decade ago. This increase illustrates the continued strength of UIW, as we’ve had enrollment increases in 28 out of the last 29 years.

The enrollment figure includes nearly 1,200 students at our campus in Mexico City, which is also another record. In addition, our international enrollment has reached an all-time high, as 19 percent of our students are from outside the United States. The international students represent more than 70 countries and about as many languages, which adds to the cultural vibrancy of the campus.

Plans continue to move forward for the opening of our new School of Osteopathic Medicine at Brooks City Base. Alumna Veronica Edwards, who is a member of the UIW Board of Trustees, hosted a successful fundraiser for the school in September that raised awareness about it in San Antonio and South Texas.

The medical school is going to be an important economic driver for San Antonio, especially the city’s Southside. It is also going to anchor what will eventually become the city’s second medical center.

By the time the school reaches its full operational capacity, it will include 60 full-time and 250 part-time faculty members, 600 medical students and another 90 students in a master’s level physician assistant program. We conservatively project the medical school is going to inject more than $1 billion into the local economy during the 10-year period that will begin when the inaugural medical class graduates.

The enrollment growth and new medical school illustrate an important aspect of our mission – to provide access and opportunities to a first-rate college education, particularly to populations historically underserved by higher education. Against that backdrop, we received two more pieces of good news early in the fall semester.

UIW is now No. 1 in the U.S. among private universities in conferring the most bachelor’s degrees to Hispanics. In reaching the top spot, we passed two well-known national universities that have a combined enrollment of more than 55,000 students.

Also, the persistence to graduation rate for Hispanic students enrolled in our master’s programs increased from 52 percent in 2010 to more than 70 percent in 2014. In late September, UIW was one of four universities in the U.S. recognized by Excelencia in Education for its work in improving the success rate of Hispanic students in higher education.

I encourage you to read the rest of The Word for additional details on the many exciting things that are happening at UIW including a new bachelor of business administration degree in Professional Golf Management that is being offered through the H-E-B School of Business and Administration.

As you do, please remember the momentum generated by your generous support is what allows us to continue fulfilling our goal of offering students top-notch educational opportunities within a context of faith. Your steadfast support is also what allows UIW to continue having a positive impact on San Antonio and South Texas.

Innovative BigBelly Solar recycling station installed at UIW

UIW President Dr. Lou Agnese and Brooks City Base President and CEO Leo Gomez formalize the partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding.

UIW announces plans to build medical school at Brooks City Base The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) has selected Brooks City Base as the site of its new School of Osteopathic Medicine. UIW President Dr. Lou Agnese and Brooks City Base President and CEO Leo Gomez formalized the partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding on June 10, following a meeting of the Brooks City Base Board of Directors where the terms of the agreement were approved.

The selected campus is located in the northwest corner of the Brooks City Base campus in an area known as “The Hill,” a registered historic district that previously housed the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine. President John F. Kennedy dedicated the School of Aerospace Medicine on Nov. 21, 1963, the day before he was assassinated in Dallas, Texas.

The proposed Phase I plan provides three-and-a-half buildings and 585 parking spaces on approximately 16.13 acres. UIW has an expansion option known as Phase II that would add the adjacent 7.52 acres, three-and-a-half more buildings and additional parking. The entire plan involves 23.65 acres and seven buildings with classrooms, laboratories, administrative and faculty offices, a student center and an auditorium.

“This is a historic day not just for Incarnate Word and Brooks, but really, San Antonio and Texas,” said Agnese. “About half of the counties in Texas have insufficient numbers of primary care physicians. One of the goals of our medical school will be to increase the number of primary care doctors practicing in underserved areas. Brooks has the space and resources to allow us to develop a state-of-the-art facility that will allow UIW to fulfill the healthcare mission of our founders, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.”

Under the agreement, UIW would lease the buildings from Brooks City Base for a term of 25 years. UIW will be responsible for financing and construction costs and would be granted ownership of the property at the end of 25 years.

In June, a BigBelly Solar recycling station was installed near the Solar House located on UIW’s main campus. The station consists of two units, a SmartBelly and a BigBelly. The units are completely wireless and independently powered by a Photovoltaic panel mounted on top of the trash compacting unit and house a battery that stores solar energy for use during non-solar hours. The battery powers the sensors, communication system and compacting motor. The BigBelly compactor holds over 150 gallons of waste while the SmartBelly holds 50 gallons.

Each unit measures the trash and recycling levels with internal sensors via the CLEAN Monitoring system. With a Web interface notification, levels can be preset. Once the preset level is reached, the unit sends an email via satellite link to the responsible party notifying them that the unit is ready to be emptied. The system also provides insights into current status and collection history.

“This provides efficient resource management when emptying and servicing the unit,” said Daniel Potter, Solar House project manager. “It is still very early but these units will allow us to track the volume of recyclables versus general waste collected at the site.”

The use of BigBelly technology may potentially improve operational efficiency of waste collection by reducing the frequency of pickups, placing fewer miles and hours on collection vehicles, saving money on fuel and vehicle replacement, and reducing CO2 emissions. In addition, BigBelly can provide valuable data as to the university’s waste and recycling impact and management.

UIW welcomes new band director Dr. Brett A. Richardson assumed the role of coordinator of music education/director of bands and assistant professor of music in August. He now oversees the music education curriculum, teaches courses in instrumental methods, conducts the Wind Ensemble, and administers all facets of the UIW Athletic Band program.

Richardson earned a Doctor of Music in Wind Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He also holds a Master of Music Education with emphasis in wind conducting from Texas A&M University-Commerce and a Bachelor of Music Education from Stephen F. Austin State University with Texas State Board of Education Certification in Secondary Music.

He served as an associate instructor with the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Department of Bands/Wind Conducting and as the resident conductor for the Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble, a community wind band based in Bloomington, Ind. Previously, he served as the assistant director of bands and instructor of music at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas.

A product of the music education tradition in Texas public schools, he began his career as a music educator in Texas as part of the Clear Creek and Lewisville Independent School Districts.

In addition to serving as a clinician and adjudicator for bands of all levels, Richardson has had the privilege of conducting several junior high and high school All-Region and All-City Honor Bands in both Texas and Indiana.

“Words cannot describe my excitement to serve as the coordinator of music education and director of bands for the university,” said Richardson. “There is so much potential within the program to become one of the outstanding music education training sequences in the state. We have the students and now, these wonderful new facilities — let’s build towards the future by bringing in more young men and women with the desire to serve the children of Texas as band, orchestra, and choir directors as well as elementary music educators.”

Richardson has an exciting season planned. The Cardinal Band performs three shows a year ranging from pop, funk and rock n’ roll to patriotic selections during UIW home football games; this year’s themes include “Night on the River Walk,” “Funkadelic Rhythm,” and a “Celebration of America.” They will also perform at UIW’s annual Light the Way event on Nov. 22 in Benson Stadium. On July 13, 2014, a tree dedication was held at UIW’s McCracken House honoring the families of Cy and Viola Collins and Marvin and Margaret Reininger. Around the turn of the 20th century, Cy and Viola Collins left the care of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word orphanage to work at the Sisters’ Motherhouse located adjacent to the UIW campus. The couple married on campus and raised their children in a house built especially for them. Margaret Collins, Cy and Viola’s only daughter, met and married Marvin Reininger who eventually worked for Incarnate Word College as the maintenance operator. In time, he was assisted by his sons, including Peter who is currently employed full-time as air condition superintendent, and their cousins.

Through the years, their children, spouses and grandchildren have maintained a close relationship with the university. The family continues to visit the campus every Christmas to honor the family’s legacy at the university.

The tree is reflective of the deep roots the Collins-Reininger families have established at UIW as a legacy gift to the future.

InGenesis hosts fundraiser for UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine InGenesis, an industry leader in the delivery of dynamic workforce solutions, presented “Soaring to a Healthier Tomorrow,” a luncheon fundraiser for the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) School of Osteopathic Medicine on Sept. 19 at Oak Hills Country Club. The event featured the School of Osteopathic Medicine’s Founding Dean Dr. Robyn Madson, as keynote speaker, who shared plans for the future of the medical school with key community leaders and corporate sponsors. The fundraiser, hosted and underwritten

by InGenesis, raised over $75,000 for the new medical school.

Committee works to ensure safety on UIW campuses The University of the Incarnate Word’s (UIW) Campus Safety Committee was established by the Executive Council in August of 1997. The committee’s mission is to improve safety, security and institutional risk management at all UIW San Antonio locations.

Committee members meet monthly except for July.

The committee is chaired by Doug Endsley, vice president for business and finance, and consists of the following offices: Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management, Comptroller,

Human Resources, Campus Police, Facilities Management, Vehicle Services, Campus Life, Residence Life, science lab administrators, University Counsel, Health Services and the assistant to the president for community relations.

Routinely, the committee reviews police reports, accident statistics, fire planning, safety training, traffic and parking. The committee now also has student representation with the addition of a Student Government Association (SGA) member.

campus news UIW’s Fine Arts Complex gets a makeover

William Gokelman, professor of music and chair of the music department, directs the Cardinal Chorale in the new choir rehearsal room at UIW’s Fine Arts Complex. “It is truly a blessing to have the appropriate spaces for rehearsing and music making. We have never had true rehearsal rooms before, having had to rehearse the 80-100 member chorale in a classroom. Now, the students and I can actually hear each other and work on subtleties of tuning, blend, vowel formations, diction and overall expression,” said Gokelman.

H-E-B School of Business and Administration offers Professional Golf Management Program The H-E-B School of Business and Administration’s (HEBSBA) Professional Golf Management Program (PGM) is designed to prepare graduates to successfully integrate their education and training into the challenging environment of the professional golf management industry.

As the successful management of golf facilities becomes increasingly demanding, it is imperative these professionals have a greater understanding of the business of golf; these knowledge areas include the basics of UIW’s core curriculum as well as many other focus areas.

Understanding the importance of proper human resource management, marketing, supervisory and management skills is crucial to successfully managing 6

the operations of golf facilities. It is equally essential for those entering the profession to have a foundational understanding of turf grass management, golf course equipment management, food and beverage operations, customer relations and overall business planning. These professionals will have an opportunity to learn, develop and apply these educational experiences during a progressive internship program that

will allow them to experience firsthand how their classroom experiences are applied in real environments.

Internships will focus on application and hands-on experiences in the many facets of golf course operations. Industry experts at Foresight Golf Management, whose president is UIW Development Board member Dan Pedrotti, will partner with the university to develop and teach these hands-on proficiencies to further enhance students’ classroom experiences.

The PGM program opened for student enrollment in Fall 2014.

campus news UIW’s founders celebrate new leadership On July 13, the founders of the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) and CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, celebrated the official installation of their 18th General Leadership Team at the Chapel of the Incarnate Word. Five Sisters were installed to lead the congregation, including Sr. Teresa Maya, CCVI; Sr. Bertha Flores, CCVI; Sr. Gloria Ortiz, CCVI; Sr. Margaret Snyder, CCVI; and Sr. Jean Durel, CCVI. Sr. Teresa, a member of the order for 20 years, was confirmed as the congregational leader and is the second Latina to be elected to lead the Sisters since their founding 145 years ago. She will lead the more than 300 members of the order, which has Sisters throughout the United States and in Zambia, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico and Ireland. The new leadership team will serve a term of four years.

H-E-B School of Business and Administration’s finance lab open for business The construction of the new state-of-the-art finance lab at the University of the Incarnate Word’s (UIW) H-E-B School of Business and Administration (HEBSBA) wrapped up in time for the start of the Fall 2014 semester. The finance lab provides a realworld, market experience with an 87 inch video wall, 26 foot stock ticker, and a student-managed portfolio of $100,000. The lab is home to finance and management information systems courses as well as to graduate students and capstone seniors. Students have access to over 32 workstations equipped with industry standard

software, giving them a head start in their career as they learn and apply course concepts simultaneously. The instructor’s podium includes an interactive touchscreen monitor that allows the user to create charts and graphs, manage multiple presentations, and transcribe information directly onto the screen.

A

s the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) advances into its 134th year, a deep, rich sense of pride and community remains as genuine and vibrant as its picturesque campus. There’s a feeling of home that resonates with not only students, but also faculty, alumni, parents, administration, staff, benefactors, and the Alamo City as a whole. It’s a community that has stood stalwart through the test of time and continues to blossom in the new millennium. Today, there are seemingly infinite reasons to be proud to be part of the Cardinals community.

The appeal of the university to students from all over the world continues to grow. The largest Catholic university in Texas, UIW’s enrollment increased 3.6 percent from last year, reaching nearly 10,000 students, almost triple from the year 2000. UIW has experienced a 3.4 percent increase in transfer students and the university’s campus in Mexico City, Centro Universidad Incarnate Word (CIW), has nearly 1200 students. The number of out-of-state and international students has also increased steadily over the last three academic years.

As the student population increases, the school spirit UIW is famous for is more evident than ever.

“What makes me proud to be a Cardinal is the reaction I get when I tell people that I go to UIW,” said Cyntya Uriegas, a junior kinesiology student from Uvalde, Texas. “I automatically get nothing but good responses because it is a very respected school in the community.”

As soon as students arrive on campus, they are engaged with a level of support and encouragement needed to thrive; indicative of this is UIW’s First Year Engagement (FYE) program. FYE assists students with time management and study skills; selecting a major; developing a sense of community through campus involvement; identifying campus resources; and having regular contact with peer mentors.

“FYE has made me a peer mentor since my sophomore year and I have been able to help freshmen with any problems and build relationships that can last a lifetime,” said Mariah Johnson, a mathematics senior. “Every person I come in contact with on campus wants to help you succeed. They want you to reach the goals you have made for yourself and go even further than you ever thought you could.”

“The First Year Engagement and Professional Development staff and FYE peer mentors help demystify the transition from high school to UIW. First-year students learn that ‘you own your education,’ which introduces self-responsibility and an awareness of the path to success,” explained Dr. Raul Zendejas, FYE and Professional Development director.

UIW welcomed over 900 freshmen this semester with approximately 450 moving into residence halls. Every year, to kick-off the fall semester, the university holds Welcome Week which includes Freshman Move-In Day, where current students, administration, staff and faculty volunteer to help students get settled into their new home on campus. Students are also treated to a New Student BBQ, a Pinning Ceremony, and a two-day Cardinal Camp.

UIW parents seem to share this sentiment of pride and family. “From the moment our family stepped on campus at orientation just four days before the first day of classes three years ago, we felt a strong sense of belonging,” said Charles Wimett, president of the Cardinals Club. “Not only did our

daughter feel this, but we as a family felt a strong bond with everyone we came in contact with. It makes our hearts swell to know that our daughter is happy here.”

However, the support and encouragement incoming students receive doesn’t end at the close of their first year; it continues all the way to a successful graduation and beyond.

“The faculty, administration, staff and my fellow students have all been a crucial part in my academic aspirations,” said Uriegas. “The advisers for my major are some of the most enthusiastic and caring educators I have encountered. Administration has wished nothing but the best for me in my future endeavors and the road to achieving them. They are never hesitant to offer advice and help when I need it.”

Dr. Glenn James, associate provost and director of institutional effectiveness, said, “I’m surrounded by faculty who are experts at how to teach in their fields, and I’m surrounded by co-workers who keep one thing on their mind – whatever I’m doing today, how will it help our students?”

“The faculty of UIW are a source of pride not only for me but for the whole institution. We have faculty that could teach anywhere but they choose to teach at UIW,” said Dr. Mary Ruth Moore, professor of teacher education. “The students are the

most compelling reason I am proud of UIW. Seeing each one graduate and then go out into the world to be an informed citizen and leader in the community makes me very proud. When this happens, I know we are keeping the Mission of UIW alive for another generation.”

More than 2,700 UIW students are actively involved as members of student organizations, a glowing tribute to their school spirit.

“I am proud to be a part of a school that was built on such great morals and one way I show that is by being as involved as I can be around campus,” said Uriegas, a student ambassador.

“I am most proud of the active role our students are taking in governing and influencing policy changes on our campus,” said Paul Ayala, director of university events and student programs.

“When I first arrived four years ago, our students were apathetic to the issues affecting them. Steadily I have seen the student body be more active in the community.”

UIW’s sense of community sustains even when students become alumni and enter the job market. The university now has nearly 30,000 alumni. Many alumni maintain close relationships with UIW and are enthusiastically involved and supportive of the university.

“A strong alumni association is key to UIW growth and longevity because universities need alumni participation and support for donations and connections that provide funding for scholarships, operations, new programs, events, etc. As alumni, I think we are beholden to constantly add to that value (of a degree),” said Tracy Avery ’96 BA ’12 MBA, board of trustees member and president of the UIW Alumni Association.

Hector Flores ’11 BBA, vice president of the alumni association, said a welcoming environment is simply the culture of UIW. “It’s always home,” shared Flores.

And it’s not just relatively recent alumni who cherish this sense of community and show their support.

“Truly I am so proud of UIW,” said Aileen (Wick) Hybner ’69 BA, who despite being on a fixed income contributes annually to the Capital Campaign. “The campus has changed consid-

erably since I graduated. Every time I visit the campus I am renewed with spirit.”

The greater community strongly supports UIW as well with benefactors contributing more than $5 million in 2013-14.

Administration, faculty and staff further support students’ professional and personal development by contributing to the Employee Campaign with over $170,000 given this year. Many of UIW’s nearly 1,000 employees also contribute by serving on committees and organizations to better the university, such as the Beautification, Branding and Sustainability Committees.

UIW hosts 21 athletic teams with 10 programs for men and 11 for women. In the Cardinals’ second season in the NCAA Division I’s Southland Conference, the UIW community is showing increasing support for the university’s athletics programs.

For instance, attendance at home football games increased 10 percent during the 2013-14 season and over 4,000 fans attended the 2014 home opener.

“It is really impressive the outlaying community support that we have received for our athletics teams,” said Kevin Lepore, athletics ticket manager. “Within the past year of UIW athletics events, I have seen the camaraderie come together with the student body, faculty and staff, local youth groups, and we continually strive to engage the city.”

As the university expands its brand, the sale of Cardinal merchandise has grown. Anne Richards, bookstore manager, indicated the bookstore continues to run double digit increases in Cardinal branded merchandise and has experienced an increase in merchandise being shipped outside of Texas.

In fact, UIW is garnering national attention. ESPN’s College GameDay covered the Cardinals’ football game against North Dakota State in September, which aired on ESPN3.

“This is a very exciting chapter in UIW history being on the cuff of expansion and to be a part of its growth,” said Flores.

Indeed, UIW has grown by leaps and bounds with nine colleges and schools and 80 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral majors, including doctorates in nursing, pharmacy, optometry, physical therapy, education and business administration. UIW

has 134 sister schools in 45 countries as well as campuses in Mexico and Germany. The university has Adult Degree Completion Program (ADCaP) locations throughout San Antonio and in Corpus Chrisiti, with plans for a Fort Hood site in Killeen, Texas, and offers courses conveniently via UIW Online.

And with a new Fine Arts Complex set to open in January, the construction of a new Student Center beginning this spring, and plans for the opening of the School of Osteopathic Medicine, the continued access to a premium education is more reason to celebrate being a Cardinal.

“As a parent of a UIW student, we know that when our daughter goes out into the world she will carry with her not only a great education but a true sense of pride in being able to say ‘I graduated from UIW,’” said Wimett.

Hybner, who has witnessed the growth and advancement of UIW for over 40 years, shared these sagacious words: “Long live the Incarnate Word!”

Navigating the future through collaborative research

T

he U.S. Air Force and the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) have teamed up to give problem solvers on campus the tools to provide San Antonio residents and people throughout the country some added safety and security.

Through a $486,000 grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, UIW put its Autonomous Vehicle Systems (AVS) Research and Education Laboratory into operation. Both current students and alumni are able to learn about engineering technology connected to autonomous ground robots and air vehicles. The AVS lab is unique in that autonomous ground and air vehicle research is being performed to investigate cooperative behavior.

“There is an education component that introduces students to unmanned vehicle systems,” said Dr. Michael Frye, an associate professor in the Department of Engineering. “There is also a research mission to develop new technologies to control autonomous vehicles.

The Air Force has an interest in making sure we have students who have a fundamental background in and have been exposed to it.”

That exposure to AVS technology includes the use of a combination of ground robots and air vehicles that are referred to by names such as Qball. The Qball’s interior equipment is encased in a metal cage so it does not get damaged. The machines receive signals that direct them to complete missions such as moving material for disaster or famine relief. One major question being answered is: How do we get multiple ground and air robots to communicate, cooperate and complete a mission without an operator in the loop?

UIW undergraduate students, as their Senior Design Project, are using the air vehicles and a ground vehicle called Robotino to work on finding solutions. Michael Tate and Sarah Johnson are both scheduled to graduate in December with degrees in engineering management.

Johnson also uses her decision-making and problem-solving skills on the soccer field as a midfielder for the women’s soccer team and Tate was a four-year starter with the football team. “You can control the Robotino manually through a controller that is like an Xbox controller, but you can also give it certain commands (through the system) like – don’t hit a wall,” Johnson said.

The university has been able to utilize the equipment within seniorlevel classes. “It’s always a challenge to integrate something like this into

Alumni Jonathon Castillo (left) and John Acton (right) review the technical manual for the Qbot, one of the autonomous ground vehicles utilized for AVS research. a curriculum and try to come up with ideas on how to put it into a class,” Frye said. “For senior design – it adds new ideas and possibilities.” Those brand new tools have created an added level of excitement for students. “New things are always fun to get to learn and know,” Tate said. “I thought it was cool that we could use something as common as an Xbox type controller to control it manually.”

The AVS lab is allowing graduate research opportunities for UIW alumni engineers. Jonathon Castillo ’13 BS is currently enrolled in the electrical engineering graduate program at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). He is working on forming a thesis for his master’s program and familiarizing himself with the unmanned aerial vehicles research. It is a team effort of working with his peers. “The undergrads have started to work on it and we know how they work,” Castillo said.

“I have been reading up on the manuals and quick start guides.” The team in the lab did hit a small snag when they found out that some of the manual and guide material was written in German and had to be translated – which caused a few good-natured giggles.

In addition to that collaboration between graduate students and undergrads, Frye has set up summer camp workshops to enable local high school students to get a grasp of the technology on a more basic level. John Acton ’13 BS, now enrolled in UTSA’s graduate program, assisted with some of the older equipment last year. “I helped out with a summer camp in 2013,” Acton said. “We had high school students tackle problems. This new equipment is a great opportunity. Dr. Frye is great at helping with any troubleshooting.”

Frye said the benefits gained by UIW students will be notable. “This is typically not available to undergrads at the state schools,” Frye said.

“It is usually a master’s or Ph.D. domain. This will allow UIW students to publish papers at the undergraduate level, which makes them more marketable (to grad schools and potential employers).”

As the reach of autonomous research has gradually expanded during the last decade or two to include robot use during medical procedures and product development, Frye noted that people of all ages can see the advantages. “A lot of the benefits of autonomous research show up in the safety of aircraft and cars. But it even helps to keep loads balanced in washing machines.”

Success through cultural respect

n the socialist economy of China, business partnerships often have more to do with cultural respect than money. Even an unintentional offense can cause a deal to crumble.

Because these details are crucial to doing business in China, Dr. Osman Özturgut wanted his doctoral students to learn cultural decorum firsthand. He believed offering a variety of international experiences would enhance his students’ global competencies and leadership skills. So, Özturgut brought to UIW a professional development program called Triple Helix, which he modified to include an international aspect. China became the first stop.

As the name suggests, UIW’s new Triple Helix Executive Leadership for Global Competitiveness™ program offers a mix of theory and practice to teach students necessary skills for profes-

sional success anywhere in the world. Özturgut, coordinator for international education and entrepreneurship concentration in the Ph.D. program and assistant professor of doctoral studies, organized the course to combine aspects of business, industry and education and reveal how each strand of the Triple Helix contributes to the strategy and benefit of the others.

“We don’t assume that innovation happens by a single driver or institution,” Özturgut said. “Universities can’t be innovative without collaboration with industry and government. Those innovations become policies. They reframe economic structure at the national and international level.”

The course begins in UIW classrooms with lessons in historical context and Confucianism, current Chinese culture, social issues, global economy, and politics.

“It’s hard to understand China today without understanding its history as well as the current place of China as a global leader, as one of the world’s largest markets,” said Dr. Pat Watkins, vice president emeritus and consultant to the president. Özturgut invited Watkins to join the program because of her expertise in Chinese culture developed through nearly 50 visits to the country during her tenure as vice president for international programs.

To conclude the course, the nine doctoral students traveled to China for two weeks to experience how theory applies in practice. Thanks to Harley Seyedin, the president of the American Chamber of Commerce in South China, the UIW students were able to meet some of the highest-level executives in government, industry and university positions. Seyedin also met with students to share insights on economic changes happening in China, both locally and globally.

“He made it clear that China would soon be standing shoulder-to-shoulder with developed countries like America,” said Rolando Sanchez, who is working toward a Ph.D. in education.

“It was like a blinking message in neon lights that read, ‘This is real-life economic development in practice.’”

The American travelers also learned the importance of cultural etiquette in China. During a business meeting in Shenzhen,

a Chinese CEO, firm owners and young entrepreneurs welcomed the students as colleagues for a professional discussion. The many topics included joint venture prospects and challenges, particularly the need to understand the Chinese way of doing business.

“Over there, 85 percent of joint ventures fail because of cultural incompetence and misunderstandings,” Özturgut said. “If you don’t understand culture, you cannot succeed.”

The UIW students now more fully appreciate that reality. “I see that relationships are key within the Triple Helix model,” said Denise Ramon, an international education and entrepreneurship doctoral student who expects to graduate in Spring 2016.

Part of the Chinese way includes a hierarchy of respect, evidenced at the meeting. After the top-level executives concluded the dialogue, the young entrepreneurs, who were the business owners’ children, took the UIW students on a tour, explaining more about the company.

The Ronggui Chamber of Commerce takes the Triple Helix participants to visit a factory that produces heavy machinery. The group visited multiple manufacturing and production sites while in China.

“The young professionals shared their thoughts about Chinese business in the future,” Sanchez said. “This was really beneficial because it provided a detailed perspective of the business strand of the helix that was evolving in China.”

“China is making dramatic changes that will not only affect its economy, but its society and ways of leading,” Ramon said. “All changes seem to stem from what China has learned from its own history and from other countries.”

For its next class, the UIW Triple Helix program will forge more new relationships, this time in Europe. Students will focus on the European Union in Italy, Germany, France and the United Kingdom for another aspect of executive leadership for global competitiveness.

Generation to Generation

A

be Cortez was tending business as usual at Paris Hatters in downtown San Antonio on another sweltering August afternoon last year with temperatures hovering around 105. So he thought it rather odd when a customer, who had just walked in off the street, was wearing a red jogging suit zipped all the way up to his neck, hood over his head, and his face partially covered by sunglasses.

“He wouldn’t say very much,” said Cortez. “He would just point to a hat and say, ‘How many colors does this one come in a 7-1/2?’”

As Cortez, a 1978 bachelor of business administration graduate of what was then Incarnate Word College, got a closer look at the man’s face and listened to his distinguished graveled voice, he finally recognized the hooded stranger, who had come in with an entourage. It was rock star Bob Dylan.

“He bought six hats,” Cortez continued. “About a month later, he came out in a TV commercial for iTunes. He was sitting on a stool with a black hat. I said, ‘Ah, that’s my hat.’”

Such star encounters have become the norm for the 60 year-old owner of Paris Hatters, who in the late 1960s began working in the family-owned business, which opened in 1917. The “Who’s Who” roster of celebrities, who have stepped foot inside the small, cramped shop at 119 Broadway to purchase one of the finely-crafted Stetsons, could fill a Hollywood theater.

And as the hat has been passed from generation to generation, each has taken care of the hottest celebrities of their day. For instance, Cortez has assisted Tommy Lee Jones, Eric Clapton, Kid Rock, Don King, Paul McCartney, Matt Damon, Johnny and June Cash, and Merle Haggard; his father had the pleasure of fitting President Lyndon Johnson, Dean Martin,

Bob Hope, and King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain, to name just a few.

“I used to get nervous at first,” Cortez said, “but not anymore.”

Paris Hatters’ reputation for excellent customer service and fitting the heads of celebrities has certainly helped business. Last year, they sold just over 15,000 hats ranging from $20 to $7,500.

Hats, Cortez said, have distinct personalities and should be fitted appropriately to the wearer, which begins with fitting a person according to their height, shoulder width and weight. “I can spot a guy walking across the street and tell whether a hat fits well or if it fits him like an umbrella,” he said.

Which, by the way, it all starts with a basic rule: The bigger the person, the wider the brim; the smaller the person, the smaller the brim.

“We had an electronic one, but we had a power surge and it went out,” he said. “So we’ve just always used this one. People like to see the crank.”

Cortez now works alongside his daughter, Alexandra, who is being groomed to take over the business one day. He is proud to tell you that Paris Hatters has been named the No. 1 Stetson retailer in the country.

His client list ranges from everyday people who walk in off the street to many celebrities and dignitaries. The latter includes former Presidents Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower; musicians Dwight Yoakum and Chris Isaak; opera great Luciano Pavarotti; businessman and former presidential candidate Ross Perot; and even Pope John Paul II. “It’s an interesting business,” Cortez said. “You never know who’s going to walk in.”

There’s a process to properly fitting a customer. First, Cortez or one of his three employees will ask what they plan to use it for – dress, casual, backpacking, golf, ranching? Then they measure for size, which range from 6-1/2 to size 8. After determining the customer’s budget, they work to choose the perfect hat, which can be custom-fitted, purchased and worn out the door that same day.

The most popular style being worn today by men is the fedora, Cortez adds. (Think Johnny Depp.) “Whatever they’re wearing in Hollywood drives the market.”

In business now for 97 years, little seems to have changed inside the shop with its distinct smell of leather, checkered floor, antique wooden hat blocks, hat steamer and row upon row of cowboy hats, fedoras, golf hats and caps in all shapes and sizes.

Lucchese and Dan Post cowboy boots also line the shelves.

Cortez still uses a 1912 cash register that customers find amusing – and one that Mike Wolfe of the antique road show, “American Pickers,” wanted to purchase.

Cardinals soar in Southland

N

ow in their second season as members of the NCAA Division I’s Southland Conference, UIW’s student-athletes are setting the bar in academics. With 123 honorees named to the Southland Conference Commissioner’s 2014 Spring Academic Honor Roll and 17 student-athletes earning a perfect 4.0 grade-point average, UIW topped the list of all Southland institutions.

Across Southland, a record total of 1,254 student-athletes were named to the conference’s academic honor roll which included student-athletes who took part in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field. Each of the 10 UIW programs eligible for the honor roll had seven or more student-athletes honored; the women’s track and field team led the way with 23 honorees.

Some of the top Cardinals include four academic all-district honorees.

Ifunanya (Ify) and Kosisio (Kosy) Mora, who graduated in May, were each named to the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball AllAcademic First Team, each with a perfect 4.0 GPA in biology. Both were Capital One Academic All-District VI First Team selections this year and Ify was also a Third Team Academic All-America® choice in 2013-14.

Baseball player Jason Stone, who also graduated in May, was selected to the Academic All-District 7 team with a GPA of 3.84 in vision science and Taylor Johnson, senior softball player, earned all-district with a 3.98 GPA in biology.

“It’s such an honor,” said Johnson. “There were a number of girls on our team who earned this award for working hard in the classroom and on the field.”

In fact, UIW’s softball team was named a 2013-14 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) NCAA Division I All-Academic Team.

The team finished eighth in their first year in Division I holding a team GPA of 3.57 and was the top program from the State of Texas and in the Southland Conference. The Cardinals achieved a 3.68 GPA average during the Spring 2014 semester.

“Being named the NCAA D1 All-Academic Team was a huge deal and a very big achievement for our team,” said Johnson. “Not only do we have physically gifted and talented women, but smart women who excel academically. Yes, we all made a commitment to play UIW softball, but we all realize that we made the commitment to be UIW students first.”

Eight student-athletes were placed on the 2013-14 Southland Conference All-Academic Cross Country and Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field teams; the Cardinals had the second most student-athletes on the list.

Senior Chris DeWitt, named to the Southland honor roll and the first member of the Cardinals track and field program to earn first team Academic All-America® honors as well as the first UIW student-athlete to earn first team All-America at the Division I level, said being named to the honor roll was a tremendous achievement.

“As a college athlete, people tend to forget that we are students as well, so to receive recognition for the hard work that goes into the classroom gives me a lot of satisfaction,” said DeWitt.

He shared that maintaining a correct balance between athletics and academics has been crucial to his success in both respects, and UIW helps him to accomplish this delicate balance.

“UIW has provided me with plenty of support to be successful on the

“Being a student-athlete is, in my opinion, equivalent to working a fulltime job because you invest so much time and effort into bettering yourself mentally and physically every day to perform your best on and off the field,” said Johnson. “I’ve really learned to manage my time and I always try and work ahead on my schoolwork so I don’t fall behind.”

Johnson said she also takes advantage of the resources provided by UIW and attends professors’ office hours on a regular basis.

“The support and encouragement from faculty and staff from various departments plays a huge factor in our students successfully balancing their busy schedules,” said Athletics Academic Advisor Ashleigh Smith. “We assist in scheduling so that they do have an opportunity to de-stress and enjoy the college experience. The coaching staff also reinforces the importance of maintaining a good academic standing with the university.”

Smith said the NCAA Division I academic eligibility rules also emphasize academics as a priority with UIW student-athletes.

“If the students want to play their sport, they’ll have to perform well off the field first,” explained Smith. “Now that they are competing with Southland Conference teams, the student-athletes can better analyze their performance individually and as a team. The competition will motivate the students to improve their skills to win.”

DeWitt, who carries a 4.0 GPA in business administration, said being a part of the UIW Track and Field team is one of his proudest achievements in life.

“I take a great deal of pride in telling people that I run track at UIW not only because of what we have done and what we are known for on the track but also because I strongly believe in the values of our team,” said DeWitt.

“The team has a history of having excellent GPAs as well as a history of consistently volunteering and giving back to the community.”

Smith said she is proud to see so many student-athletes excel academically.

“It’s rewarding to know that the amount of time and effort these students dedicate to their commitments on and off the field have led to positive recognition for them and the institution,” said Smith.

Mother and daughter achieve dreams and open new doors

M

other’s Day was more than a celebration of family for Amalia Long ’14 BA, and her daughter Amanda Long ’14 BS. The mother-daughter duo also celebrated accomplishing their goal of graduating from the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) through UIW Online.

“It was surreal to have that moment at graduation together with my mom,” Amanda said. “I am so proud of her to have the drive to go back and finish her college degree.”

Amalia completed all of her courses in December 2013 but received permission from her online advisor to walk the stage with Amanda in May. “Getting my degree was my goal, but to walk the stage with my daughter was a Godsend,” she said.

As working professionals, Amalia and Amanda agreed the road to graduation day was hard work and not the traditional path to completing a college degree.

“My mom and I did not go to college straight out of high school,” said Amanda, a bodily injury adjuster for a major insurance company. “As a licensed professional with a career, I wanted a degree program that met my work schedule requirements, allowed me to do things at my own pace, and let me have a personal life. I found that program through UIW Online.”

Amalia, a team lead in charge of the development of employees at a global bank, said she found the flexibility she needed taking courses online through UIW and the necessary support.

“I think it is great that the professors can connect so much with the students – with each class I felt like, ‘this professor belongs to me right now,’” Amalia said. “They were always available for questions and to provide feedback. I felt comfort knowing my instructor was literally accessible to me at my fingertips.”

The two women encouraged and challenged one another along their journey. They even enrolled in several classes together where they competed for the best grade. “We would take turns reading to each other and exchanging our opinions,” Amanda said. “Then we’d separate to complete our assignment and see who could get the better response or grade from the professor.”

Amy Antoniak, adjunct instructor in the H-E-B School of Business and Administration, taught Amalia and Amanda during their Principles of Marketing course.

“It is a blessing for students to be able to share in helping one another achieve their lifelong goals,” Antoniak said. “Online students have so much variety, and a diversity of experiences to offer each other. It is truly a great way to earn a degree and connect with other students who have similar goals.”

Amalia and Amanda also completed required community service hours together with the Cordi-Marian Sisters, where they helped with a large amount of filing.

Amanda said, “It is a really good feeling to be in a position to help others and use your gifts for the greater good.”

Sr. Matilda Jaime of Cordi-Marian said she was grateful Amalia and Amanda came to help. “As volunteers, they share themselves, their time and expertise, and above all their concern for others,” she said. “When Amalia and Amanda felt they ‘didn’t finish’ once their hours were completed, they wanted to do more to get others involved.”

“When I saw there was more work that needed to be done I reached out to UIW who set the ball in motion to send more help and volunteers to Cordi-Marian from the university,” Amalia said.

Amalia and Amanda said completing their degree program online through UIW has built a strong sense of community in them and now they are ready to pay it forward. They plan to complete the Alamo Colleges Educator Preparation Program together to focus on helping children through teaching.

“I wanted to obtain my degree to concentrate on my career, make more money, and be more successful,” Amalia shared. “UIW lit a fire in me and I am about to change careers to give back. My new concentration will be bilingual studies so I can work with children learning English as a second language.”

Amanda said achieving her bachelor’s degree helped her realize her true passion of one day becoming a school counselor.

“Graduating from UIW was a reset for both of us career wise,” she said. “Along with teaching for two years, ultimately I will pursue my master’s degree to become a counselor to guide and advise students.”

“The path my mom and I took goes to show that you do not have to go the ‘traditional route,’” Amanda said. “You have to do what works best for you and I want people to know there are opportunities out there, like UIW Online, which allow you to work and go to school to achieve your goals.”

Amalia shared that she and Amanda represent a family tradition at UIW. Her cousin Janie Barrera instilled in them a sense of accomplishment after earning her MBA from what was then Incarnate Word College in 1987. Her older brother Alvaro Aranda graduated from UIW with his BA in 2006. And she said it gives her a sense of pride that her nephew Eric Aranda, who is set to graduate from UIW in December, is keeping the tradition alive and well.

Students show spirit through leadership and volunteerism

G

rowing up in San Antonio, Katie Weitman learned firsthand from her mother about leadership and volunteerism. Today, she would not trade her involvement in a campus sorority for the world.

Every year, students at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) have an opportunity to join any of the more than 70 academic, athletic, Greek and special interest organizations on campus. Each specialized group allows students the chance to identify their individualism, strengthen leadership skills, while encouraging pride at UIW, as well as the local community.

Weitman, a UIW fashion management student, said joining the Delta Beta Chi Sorority has made an indelible impact on her life. As president of the organization, she not only ensures each member has a chance to shine bright, but the benefits to better herself are a welcomed bonus.

“Being involved has taught me invaluable, real-world skills, the three most important being organizational, time management and communication. The sorority has brought out these qualities in me and I’m able to apply them to every aspect of my life whether at school, sorority, or life in general,” she said.

“Going Greek” is one of the best decisions a student can make in their collegiate career, maintained Weitman.

“You will learn so much about yourself and it will truly help you grow,” she said. “Each of us brings something different to the table: some of us are pageant queens, bookworms, athletes and artists, but in the end we all come together with common ground and have truly unique friendships.”

Founded in 1985, Delta Beta Chi is the oldest sorority at UIW. Campus-wide, there are over a dozen different local, national and international Greek sororities and fraternities open to undergraduate students.

Other campus organizations promote awareness about social consciousness issues, such as suicide prevention, children’s advocacy, veterans affairs and environmental justice.

SustainUIW is a student organization that lives, practices and promotes a sustainable lifestyle at the university. With 33 current members, the overall purpose of the organization is to raise awareness within the student population about energy.

When senior and President of SustainUIW Pompeyo R. Quesada was a freshman, former UIW English professor Eugene Moore’s World Literature class opened his eyes to mountaintop removal mining and its effects on the people of Appalachia. He approached Moore about making a difference for the environment and soon SustainUIW was born.

“I became intrigued about the effect coal mining was having on our environment and ecosystem. I reached out to Professor Moore and explained my desire to help the environment and be its voice. I want to protect our world from the destructions people have bestowed on the earth,” he said.

The ultimate goal is to move the university to a cleaner and more sustainable campus, including empowering the student body to become sustainable with their participation in different events.

“SustainUIW has taught me endless lessons and shown me what an idea and student input can do. Now that I’m a couple of months from graduating, I realize that SustainUIW allows me to serve the earth. I believe that as humans we hold the responsibility to serve the world and protect it. Ultimately, the world and

Paulina Mazurek, student center assistant director and chapter advisor for the program, said the first steps to joining include filling out an online application and paying the onetime registration fee. The organization has 178 active members currently.

“After that, you are considered a pre-inducted member of the society. And once you complete the steps to induction, (which include orientation, leadership training, networking and participation in community events) you will become an inducted member,” she said.

Mazurek added the society is founded upon the core beliefs that one can achieve one’s dreams with the proper support and dedicated action.

“We teach students firsthand that we accomplish more together than we would achieve alone. Participation in community events is key,” said Mazurek.

The National Society of Leadership and Success is just one of almost a dozen student organizations focused on academic success.

UIW student Shelley Lippe joined the organization after being invited; she hoped it would strengthen her leadership and interpersonal skills. Her activity with the group has far exceeded those expectations.

“Since joining, I have had opportunities to grow beyond anything I ever imagined,” she explained. “The positive, supportive environment and true essence of teamwork has profoundly impacted my personal, as well as academic self, which not only helps me to be a better leader today, but for the rest of my life.”

She encourages anyone who has received an invitation to the organization to proceed with the process as soon as possible.

“The leadership training is invaluable and the friendships you will forge are priceless,” she added.

Founded at UIW in August of 2011, the invitation-only leadership honor society is affiliated with more than 200 colleges around the world. The mission is to build leaders, provide

university collective Rosenberg School of Optometry (RSO) Library Director Vasilios (Basil) Aivaliotis officially retired from the university on July 1, 2014.

A retirement farewell was held in his honor. Aivalitos worked at UIW for 37 years and earned an MA in 1999 and BBA in 1981 from the university.

Dr. Esmeralda de los Santos, professor of marketing, spoke on the ethnographic marketing research undertaken in Chihuahua, Mexico, at the Southwest Fulbright Symposium held at the University of Texas on July 25. Entitled “Defining Emerging Market Trade Practices for Mexican Ceramic Crafts: The Role of the Market Researcher,” the presentation explored how a small Mexican village annually exported over a $1 million of ceramics with little infrastructure and how the area has evolved into a regional center for ceramic craft production.

In June, Chancellor Dr. Denise Doyle joined a delegation of presidents and chancellors from top U.S. universities visiting Israel to explore opportunities for bilateral academic partnerships and collaboration through an educational seminar conducted by Project Interchange, an institute of the American Jewish Committee. The delegation met with their counterparts from Israeli universities, including Bar-Ilan, Haifa, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv University, among others, in areas relevant to their universities such as research, water and environmental sustainability, biotech, urbanization, and diversity. The authors developed and validated SPICE, an instrument designed to measure pharmacy and medical student perceptions of interprofessional clinical education.

Dr. Flor Garcia-Wukovits, associate professor of mathematics, Dr. Craig McCarron, assistant professor of mathematics, and Dr. Joleen Beltrami, assistant professor of mathematics, presented at the Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teachers (CAMT) in Fort Worth, Texas, in July. This state-wide conference for math teachers is held annually. Beltrami and graduate student Mario Perez collaborated on a poster that was presented at the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) conference in Montana in June.

NACTA is dedicated solely to teaching and learning, and focuses on areas of agricultural, environmental, natural and life sciences.

Dr. Helmut B. Gottlieb, associate professor of pharmacy instruction, was accepted for participation in the Early Career Reviewer (ECR) program at the Center for Scientific Review (CSR), National Institutes of Health (NIH) in August.

Gottlieb’s name and areas of expertise have been added to the list of eligible reviewers.

As Scientific Reviewer Officers (SRO) assemble study sections, they can go to the ECR list to

find reviewers with expertise in areas relevant to the applications they review. They also check for recent publications and grant submissions through NIH and institutional websites. The Center for Scientific Review (CSR) is the portal for NIH grant applications and their review for scientific merit.

CSR receives all research grant applications sent to NIH and handles the review of more than 70 percent of those by organizing peer review groups (study sections) to evaluate research grant applications.

Dr. Valerie Kesner Greenberg, associate professor of communication arts, attended the Fulbright Southwest Symposium conference in July where she delivered her presentation entitled, “A Case Study on Social Media: Twitter’s Ripple Effect on the Arab Spring.” Her research examines the new role social media plays on the Arab nations.

This NISD annual event recognizes NISD’s best business and community partners. James was recognized as the 2014 Outstanding Individual at the high school level. James has served on the John Jay High School Science and Engineering Academy’s Advisory Board for seven years and has promoted a positive image of the academy at UIW and throughout the community. The Rosenberg School of Optometry (UIWRSO) represented by Dr. James Chapman, assistant dean of clinical affairs, and the Essilor Vision Foundation represented by Patrick Esquerre were recognized as Outstanding Business and Community Organization Partners of the Year. In 2013, NISD’s Student, Family, and Community Services Department partnered with UIW and the Essilor Vision Foundation to provide more than 420 students in elementary and middle school with free eye exams and free glasses.

In June, Dr. Sarah Luna, assistant professor of physical therapy, became a board certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS). ABPTS has certified 14,392 individuals who have demonstrated

advanced clinical knowledge and skills in physical therapy specialty areas. Currently, they offer board-certification in eight specialty areas of physical therapy: cardiovascular and pulmonary, clinical electrophysiology, geriatrics, neurology, orthopedics, pediatrics, sports, and women’s health.

Dr. David W. Moffett, Dreeben School of Education, presented his mentoring efforts resulting in the next leadership model at the 7th International Annual Mentoring Conference at the University of New Mexico Mentoring Institute in Albuquerque, N.M., Oct. 21-24, 2014. The new leadership model, known as Affect-Centered Transformational Leadership, resulted from Moffett’s teaching and mentoring of UIW Doctor of Philosophy program student and mentee Armando Tejeda during the INDR 8310 Concepts of Leadership course in Fall 2013. Additionally, Tejeda and Moffett have written and submitted an article regarding the new leadership model for publication, and the new model is currently being operationalized at a school in the South San Antonio Independent School District.

Dr. Mary Ruth Moore and Dr. Susan Hall, professors in the Dreeben School of Education, recently published an article in “Early Years: Journal of the Texas Association for the Educa-

tion of Young Children.” The article, “The Ball: A Symbol of Play Past and Present,” traced the use of the ball as an educational tool from its roots in the practice of Friedrich Froebel, considered the father of kindergarten, to the recent work of Gloria Rodriquez, founder of Avance. The article was the featured article in the journal’s special edition on play and was published in both English and Spanish.

Dr. Carla Perez, associate professor of fashion management, had her fashion design submission “Silk Sonata” accepted to the runway exhibit at the International Textile and Apparel Association’s 2015 annual conference to be held in Charlotte, N.C. in November; the gown is designed to meet the needs of a female concert pianist.

Perez has been appointed the Fashion, Style, Appearance and Identity Committee chair for the Southwest Popular Culture Association (SWPCA). She also co-authored a presentation, “Updating a Traditional Mexican Apparel Design,” with student Ashley Davis for the 2015 annual meeting of SWPCA in February in Albuquerque, N.M. Dr. Alison Whittemore, chair and assistant professor of engineering, received a Faculty Endowment Fund Award to join the Women’s Global Immersion trip to Peru in July of this year. Whittemore’s focus was on solar energy and she gave a presentation to 140 engineering students at the Universidad

National de Santos in Chimbote, Peru. She also performed a demonstration of how to build a solar stove out of cardboard and foil to residents of Costa Blanca, Peru, a rural community without roads, water or electricity.

UIW General Counsel Cynthia Escamilla was selected as a finalist for the Magna Stella® Awards for in-house excellence in leadership and management in the Solo General Counsel category by the General Counsel Forum. The finalists will be honored and the winners will be announced at the Stella Awards dinner on Nov. 20.

The dinner will be held in conjunction with the Forum’s 16th Annual Conference of General Counsel at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort & Spa in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Kevin Vichcales, dean of graduate studies and research, was appointed as associate provost in August.

Touching Countless Lives It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Sr. Dorothy (Dot) Ettling, CCVI, PhD, ’64 BA, ’94 DHL, who served as a faculty member for 15 years and was a former trustee. Sr. Dot, as she was affectionately known, was born on March 6, 1940 in St. Louis, Mo. She served the congregation as general superior from 1984 1990. Sr. Dot served as director of the Center for Civic Leadership (CCL), co-founded in partnership with CHRISTUS Health and UIW. The CCL will be dedicated to the memory of Sr. Dot, and named the Sister Dorothy Ettling Center for Civic Leadership.

She co-founded, with Sr. Neomi Hayes, CCVI, Women’s Global Connection under the sponsorship of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and in partnership with UIW. Sr. Dot traveled to Africa and Peru as part of “immersion trips” organized

by WGC to promote understanding of different cultures and provide education as a means of promoting women’s leadership and community development. Sr. Dot touched countless lives through her ministries. Her legacy will go on to serve the most vulnerable in society and empower women to attain a better life for themselves and their families.

Dr. Timothy Henrich, professor of sports management and kinesiology, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014. Henrich served as a UIW faculty member for 22 years. He was the driving force behind the undergraduate and graduate degrees in sport management and served as director of the program from its inception in 1993 until 2011. Henrich was instrumental in the vision and creation of the fencing center, which is considered the premier fencing facility in the region; it is located on the campus of St. Anthony Catholic High School. Henrich coached swimming at every level, including Olympic teams in Egypt and Denmark. He was also instrumental in the building of the Natatorium and started the swim program at UIW. He helped find funding for the building, and worked with the architects to design the structure that exists on campus today.

Henrich held positions in many professional organizations and was a prolific researcher, writer and presenter. At UIW he served as a senator and chair of numerous faculty committees. The Brainpower Center for Fencing and International Sports will be dedicated to the memory of Dr. Timothy Henrich, and named the Henrich Center for Fencing and International Sports.

Michelle Loyoza-Villareal ’12 BS writes: “Speaking of huge impacts on my life, I would like to say that Dr. (Richard) Piegler changed my life. I am happy to say that I had the opportunity to take evolution and systematics and entomology with him. You see, I love animal behavior. At that time, Dr. (Sara) Tallarovic had captivated me with her courses and I was working for the San Antonio Zoo as an exhibit interpreter. Dr. Piegler encouraged me to take his entomology course which I was not very enthralled by with his description of the course and what we would be touching and putting pins through. But Dr. Piegler was so enthusiastic about his material. Before I knew it, I was in his office telling him about the insects I had encountered from the book in real life and asking him what he thought about the specimens I had collected. I became so excited about bugs, I surprised not only my family,

friends, sorority sisters, but myself. There I was on campus with my jar in my purse and my net in my trunk, in class thinking about the dragon flies I had seen around the Natatorium. Dr. Piegler’s passion and his involvement with me and my own collection inspired me to change my career route. Dr. Piegler is who made me want to be a teacher instead of an animal trainer. Around the time I was graduating, I started working for Sea World as an educator. I would tell Dr. P. about my new learning but would also tell him about the awesome specimens I had seen crawling or flying around the Sea World park. I am currently going to USC for my Master of Arts in Teaching. I want to teach biology, maybe even entomology! I wouldn’t have made the switch without Dr. P.’s amazing influence. I hope to be half the teacher he is.”

Word College (now UIW). There were only 12 students in the class so you had to participate and ‘be on your toes’ the whole class period, but I learned my Spanish. I took that knowledge with me in my 34 years as an elementary school teacher here in San Antonio. I used my Spanish frequently in speaking with parents. I will always remember Sr. Rosa Maria Icaza and her way of teaching which definitely benefitted me in my career as a school teacher.”

Cynthia Grobe Serene ’71 BA writes: “I was a 17 year old freshman in Sr. Rosa Maria Icaza’s Spanish class in 1967 at Incarnate

I continue to marvel at those first three Sisters who came to San Antonio in 1869, out of Christian service. What else must have characterized them: flexible, innovative, persistent, adventuresome, collaborating with the community, willing to take risks, and always listening to the Spirit.

That’s how they acquired the Brackenridge property and moved their headquarters here after almost 30 years in 1897. Among other things, this provided the opportunity for the Sisters to grow in appreciation of the land and in particular, water, and also for gradually seeing the connections between Christian and Native American creation spirituality. We have 12,000 year-old evidence that people were long attracted to the Spirit Waters of the Blue Hole springs that are the source of the San Antonio River.

The sense of adventure was alive and well when I joined what was then Incarnate Word College in 1972. I soon was involved in applying my area of ethics to current issues in interdisciplinary courses with faculty from across the campus. A

related effort in 1973 was brainstorming an innovative core curriculum that would introduce first-year students to the campus by focusing on issues related to the Blue Hole and the beginning of the San Antonio River; that plan didn’t work.

Another 30 years passed before the topic of water surfaced again in 2002, when for the first time, the Sisters gave voice in a Mission directive to a growing awareness about environmental issues. On Earth Day the following year, I was fortunate to be part of the burgeoning Headwaters Committee which involved UIW faculty, administrators and Sisters, and led in 2008 to the birth of the 53 acre Headwaters Sanctuary. A year later, UIW secured a Water and Culture grant to infuse water sensitivity in English and other courses.

I didn’t realize till I thought about writing this reflection just how much I have had water on my mind and in my heart since I came to Incarnate Word, and just how much the Sisters and the Spirit have been part of that. What will be the next water adventure?

Incarnate Word for Life

heryl McMullan ’62 IWHS ’66 BA ’70 MA confesses she has too many fond memories to mention, so many they could fill a book. But pivotal to her as an alumna of the Brainpower Connection’s St. Peter Prince of Apostles School, Incarnate Word High School (IWHS), and what was then Incarnate Word College (IWC), are the teachers, many Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, who touched her life with lessons and values she carries to this day.

“Fr. French’s sermons, Sr. Margaret Patrice reading Chaucer’s middle English, Sr. Rita’s headline writing tips, the way Mother Columkille interrogated me about my grades, the activities in support of the civil rights movement, and the way teachers checked after us to see what we were concerned about and their trying to help us in any way possible,” are just a few memories McMullan cherishes.

Dr. Dick McCracken, dean of alumni emeritus, who McMullan has known since coming to IWC in 1962, said McMullan affectionately refers to herself as “cradle to grave Incarnate Word.”

McMullan enrolled at St. Peter’s when she was in second grade. She received a

partial scholarship to IWHS. IWC granted her a full tuition, four-year scholarship as well as a graduate discount to pursue her master’s. She admits that the Sisters’ and IWC’s support was invaluable after losing her father at age 11.

After earning her BA and MA in English, McMullan taught eighth grade English for nine years and high school English for five years. In 1980, she decided to pursue a law degree and has practiced for 31 years, the last 16 mainly in probate and related fields. McMullan received the San Antonio Bar Foundation’s Peacemaker Award for Lawyer Community Service in 2004.

She attributes much of her success in law school, her career and in life to her Incarnate Word education.

“University of Texas School of Law draws some of the best students in Texas and the country, so for me to meet that challenge and get a degree with honors is proof of what a top-tier education I received from my excellent Incarnate Word teachers,” said McMullan. “Furthermore, the spiritual grounding my St. Peter’s-toIWC education gave me has helped me to weather the storms of life, given me true

values, and a personal relationship with God.” McMullan has been a tremendous supporter and maintains a close relationship with the university. She, in fact, Cheryl McMullan has contributed her professional talents in assistance with a number of bequests, making a profound impact on UIW’s advancement.

The former Alumna of Distinction serves on the board of the Village at Incarnate Word. She and several of her IWHS and IWC classmates remain friends and work together in St. Monica’s Guild and on the Village board. McMullan is active in her parish ministries through adult education and Eucharistic service to a local, senior living facility. She is currently pursuing an MA in pastoral ministries at the Oblate School of Theology.

Family and community inspire leadership

he University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is a place of family and community. Robert Crosby, who in July became the new chair of UIW’s Development Board, said his inspiration for getting involved at the university was his wife, Kate ’96 BBA, and friend and colleague, Mikel Fitzgerald.

“Kate joined the Development Board in January of 1997. As she became more involved with the board, I would participate in the Swing-In golf tournament and gala,” said Robert. “Also, my partner, Mikel, at Wortham knew Sr. Kathleen (Coughlin), vice president of institutional advancement, from his days growing up in Corpus Christi. We decided to join the Development Board together.”

Robert, who has been in the insurance agent brokerage business for over 49 years with 30 of those in San Antonio, spent the last eight years as a managing director with Wortham Insurance and Risk Management. He plans to retire from Wortham in April 2015.

Robert and Kate’s close connection with UIW is also rooted in the university’s ADCaP program. Kate graduated from UIW as the first ADCaP graduate in December 1996.

“When Kate started with ADCaP, there were 28 students in the program,” Robert said. “Now there are more than 1,000 students.”

For Kate, Robert shared, being in the pilot of this program with Dr. Denise Doyle, UIW chancellor and former ADCaP dean, gave her and the new ADCaP students the opportunity to participate in its development and learn with fellow students who worked and had business experience.

Kate, who formerly served as chair of the Development Board, has also had an impact on Robert’s approach as the new chair.

“Because of Kate’s experience, I feel that I can understand the need to reach out to all board members both on the Development Board and the board of trustees,” said Robert. “My goals and plans for the Development Board are to develop a strategy to better serve the board of trustees and UIW.” But most heartfelt by Robert and Kate is providing students who want to attend college a means of fulfilling their academic aspirations.

“Kate and I understand how hard it is to work and go to school at the same time,” Robert said. “We also realize that San Antonio and South Texas have many people who are economically disadvantaged. If we can help just one student achieve a goal of graduating from college, we are successful.”
