A Message from the Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers

Most people are familiar with the performances presented in our Ruth Finley Person Theater - from Vince Gill and The Time Jumpers to John Oliver to Phillip Phillips to River North Dance Chicago to David Sedaris to Chrissie Hynde, we truly have something for everyone this year! But many people are not as familiar with our Education Through the Arts programs, which provide educational opportunities and access to the arts for more than 30,000 North Bay children each year.

One of those programs is our Missoula Children’s Theatre Summer Camp (MCT). For the past 10 years, the generosity of our members, donors, and sponsors has made it possible to bring this camp to Santa Rosa free of charge, ensuring that financial means are not a barrier to participation by anyone in our community. We invite you to turn to pages 34 and 64 in this program to read stories of how MCT has impacted two families in our community.

Garrison Keillor was born in 1942 in Anoka, Minnesota, and began his radio career as a freshman at the University of Minnesota, from which he graduated in 1966. He went to work for Minnesota Public Radio in 1969, and on July 6, 1974, he hosted the first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion in St. Paul. The show ended in 1987, resumed in 1989 in New York as The American Radio Company, returned to Minnesota, and in 1993 resumed the name A Prairie Home Companion. Over 17 million listeners on more than 900 public radio stations now hear the show each week.

With his first appearance on “The Late Show with David Letterman” in 1995, Brian solidified his place on the show and in 2013 he made his 25th appearance, the most of any comedian on the CBS show.

Brian has starred in two hour-long Comedy Central specials and released three DVD’s and two CD’s. His non-stop theater tour has visited more than 80 cities each year since 2005; it’s the quality of his material, relatable to a wide audience and revered by his peers, which continues to grow Brian’s fan base. Quietly (and not so quietly) at work outside of the spotlight, the Center’s nationally-recognized Education Through the Arts program uses the Arts to teach core subjects, including math, science, and reading, to create new ways of learning and improve engagement and understanding.

n Conduct 50 Artists in the Schools workshops led by our artist-educators who use the arts to help teach core curriculum subjects, increasing comprehension and retention, and acknowledging that students learn in different ways.

n Operate a 450-piece Music For Schools instrumentlending library, allowing low-income students the opportunity to participate in their school’s band or orchestra program.

Removing Roadblocks to the Arts Truth is, not everyone can afford to participate in the arts. Yet, music, dance and theater are at the heart of every community, providing one of our greatest means for understanding and communication.

At Wells Fargo Center for the Arts, we believe in art for art’s sake, but we also know that the arts are an incredible tool that stimulates creativity and communication skills, and also helps children develop self-esteem. Your Community Gathering Place In the late 1970s, a group of 12 local community leaders envisioned a home for the arts. They dreamed of a vibrant gathering place where people could treasure the wonderful talents of local performing artists and enjoy world-class performances without having to travel to San Francisco and beyond to see them.

“We really wanted an arts center for our community,” says Henry Trione, one of the Center’s founders. “So, when the church building came up for sale, we decided to buy it on our own.”

Meet Our Volunteers Jennie Bower truly has the “Spirit of Service” Of the Center’s more than 200 volunteers, Jennie Bower is one of a special few who volunteers in three different areas – as a school show usher for weekday morning performances, as an usher for evening and weekend performances, and also as a concessionaire.

She also recently ended a 2-year run as the scheduler for the concessions volunteers, and was awarded the first-ever “Volunteer Spirit of Service” award in recognition of her time and dedication.

Jennie got involved at the Center after her husband passed away in 2009.

“My children came to the Center on field trips when they were little,” says Jennie, “and I always thought it would be a fun thing to do.” She started as an usher, and then joined the concessions volunteers in order to

have more opportunities. She also volunteers for the Center’s weekday morning school shows, which welcome more than 30,000 North Bay Schoolchildren each year to see performances that complement their classroom lessons.

“I don’t know what we’d do without Music For Schools,” says Kyle Thompson, Elsie Allen music director. He estimates 85% of his kids are using Music For Schools instruments.

Eduardo’s trumpet gave him a passionate love of music, but it also gave him the chance to grow into the leader he is today. “Eduardo’s leadership skills are at such a high level,” says Kyle Thompson, “he is the most skilled teacher of peers I have ever had in a class.”

Music has not only given him leadership skills, Eduardo says, it’s helped him become a confident public speaker – a skill he’ll bring with him to Sonoma State University this fall where he will major in Business and minor in Jazz Studies.

All this from the loan of a trumpet our donors made possible.

THEATER ETIQUETTE Performances start promptly at their scheduled time. Please arrive with plenty of time to park and find your seat. Latecomers and those who leave their seats during a performance will be seated at the first appropriate pause in the program, as predetermined by house staff and performers.

Please remember to silence all electronic devices before entering the theater.

Many people are allergic to scents. Out of consideration for your fellow audience members, please refrain from using perfume and cologne.

Please use discretion when choosing to stand and/or dance at your seat. Be respectful of others and behave in an appropriate manner related to the performance you are attending.

It is never permissible to stand in any aisle space. Usher and security representatives are available should you need assistance. Please Note: Standing for extended lengths of time is expected at some performances and is indicated on our website and printed show materials. If you prefer not to stand at these performances, it is suggested you purchase tickets in the front of the balcony to obtain a clear view of the stage.

The Ruth Finley Person Theater at Wells Fargo Center for the Arts is a flexible venue allowing for both seated and open floor configurations. When seated, the 1681-seat venue is the largest fixed seat venue in Sonoma County. When main floor seats are removed, the open floor/seated balcony configuration raises the capacity to 2000. The theater’s unique thrust stage design, with no seat more than 75 feet from the stage, provides a level of intimacy between artists and audiences unlike any other in Northern California. For more than 30 years, Wells Fargo Center for the Arts has been the best place to see your favorite performer up close and personal.
