Rosie Cunningham Well that’s another Christmas over and we approach another new year with re-newed optimism and a set of resolutions. Yet, I will honestly say, that my optimism may just simply be a veil for my real fear that many independent businesses, including art galleries are once again going to struggle.

Barbican Theatre brings new Le Navet Bete show to Plymouth Athenaeum this Easter!

Barbican Theatre first met Le Navet Bete in 2008 and have worked closely with them ever since on six co-productions. Following sell out versions of The Wizard of Oz and Robin Hood and His Merry Men the past two Christmases, Le Navet Bete and Barbican Theatre’s 2016 Christmas production is The Jungle Book.

Sheila Snellgrove, CEO of Barbican Theatre says “Le Navet Bete’s work is now so successful it deserves a larger stage. We want to keep them in the city and support their careers, so we met with Owen at The Athenaeum in July of this year.

Gradually a partnership developed to re-open the Athenaeum for theatrical performances, with Dracula as the first production. The Plymouth Athenaeum is held so dearly in the hearts of so many Plymouthians and I’m thrilled we can play a part in bringing theatre back to it’s stage”.

The Plymouth Athenaeum dates back to 1812, and was rebuilt in it’s current location in 1961, following destruction during the Blitz.

The Plymouth Athenaeum theatre closed in July 2009, although its charitable society has remained open for use by Members and a widerange of activities, including lecture, talks and art and literary groups.

"We are absolutely delighted to be working in partnership with Barbican Theatre to return theatre to the stage at The Plymouth Athenaeum," says Owen Ryles, Honorary General Secretary of The Plymouth Athenaeum. ”The Athenaeum has such a rich and cherished heritage as a theatrical venue. We are very excited to be working with a high-calibre organisation like Barbican Theatre to relaunch shows on our stage. We believe that this will be the start of an on-going, long-term partnership that will provide a pathway for the growth of both organisations. Dracula: The Bloody Truth is produced by Le Navet Bete in association with Exeter Northcott Theatre. Le Navet Bete are committed to creating hilarious, physical and totally accessible comedy theatre using creative and engaging storytelling. Dracula: The Bloody Truth is a comedy theatrical retelling of Bram Stoker’s classic novel. It will expose that the events recorded in 1897 were not fiction at all.... but fact.

Set shortly after 1897 audiences will be introduced to Professor Abraham Van Helsing educating the world on the actual events of Dracula through his first ever theatre tour which he himself has produced and is in fact...starring in.

Professor Van Helsing and the three actors he has commissioned will present this ‘true story’ through the mediums of song, dance, soliloquy, shadow puppets and even some Victorian parlour tricks Al Dunn from Le Navet Bete says “We are thrilled to be bringing our newest and most ambitious touring show to date, to the Athenaeum in Plymouth. The scale of this production is in need of a bigger space, and we are delighted to be producing with our partners Barbican Theatre, yet in the Athenaeum. With this increase in scale we can reach more of the Plymouth audience of whom we have such a close relationship with already. We can't wait to unleash the show next Spring.”

There will be a total of 10 performances of Dracula: The Bloody Truth at The Plymouth Athenaeum between Thursday 6 April and Saturday 15 April. On Sunday 8 January from 12noon, we’re teaming up with Dartmoor Border Morris for our annual wassail. Join us in the Great Barn and orchard as we make as much noise as possible to wake up our trees and to wish them a bountiful new year. Normal admission charges apply.

Raise your heart rate without breaking a sweat with Nordic Walking every Monday morning or for something more challenging you might like to crack our Trust10 run on Sunday 22 January. A new year sees the start of a brand new programme of offsite exhibitions and events for Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery as part of its ‘Museum On Tour’ programme.

‘Plymouth Society of Artists: Land and Water’ is open from 21 January to 4 March, 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. Admission is free.

Council House exhibitions

As part of its preparations for the Plymouth History Centre, staff will also be continuing to work on a series of partnership exhibitions throughout 2017.

A major new development is the start of a temporary exhibition programme at the Council House on Armada Way (next to the Civic Centre building).

The first exhibition opens on Saturday 21 January and runs until the end of Saturday 4 March. It features works by selected members of the Plymouth Society of Artists (PSA), all of which have been inspired by the land or the sea.

The PSA was established in early 1944, to encourage and foster a professional outlook in the fine arts of painting, sculpture and printmaking for the benefit of Plymouth. Seven decades have passed since then and group has become extremely well-established with many successful exhibitions and a membership drawn from throughout the region and beyond.

The exhibition is a chance for people to get a first-hand look at the work of these practising artists. The majority of the pieces on display will be for sale so it’s also an opportunity to purchase an original work of art if something catches your eye. A work can be reserved with a deposit and payment of the balance and collection takes place on Saturday 4 March between 10am and 4pm.

The first of these is a dual site exhibition at Peninsula Arts and Plymouth Arts Centre.

‘Present Moments and Passing Time’ spans 50 years of innovation in painting, film, video and digital art and celebrates the ground-breaking work of Plymouth-born Malcolm Le Grice. The exhibition looks at his pioneering role in the development of multi-projection and performance works as well as the UK’s first computer art films.

‘Present Moments and Passing Time’ runs from 20 January to 18 March and will be open from 10am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 11am to 4pm on Saturdays at Peninsula Arts, and from 1pm to 8.30pm Tuesday to Saturday at Plymouth Arts Centre. Admission is free.

Lunchtime Talks

The Museum’s Lunchtime Talks programme continues offsite with a series of presentations on alternating Tuesdays from 10 January. Topics for this season include a History Centre update, Pop Art genius Robert Rauschenberg, Plymouth’s night life, Bronze Age discoveries on Dartmoor, adventurer Gertrude Benham and the Ice Age.

Memory Roadshows

If you fancy reminiscing about old Plymouth, fashion and work some monthly ‘Memory Roadshows’ at local libraries offer a great forum for this in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Attendees get to handle objects from the Museum’s collections and browse library resources whilst they have a cuppa!

Bite Size Presentations

Short informal presentations about the city archives (18 January) and the Malcolm Le Grice (1 February) and Plymouth Society of Artists exhibitions (22 February) are also on the programme.

Family Friendly Fun

A range of family events are also on offer over the next few weeks. These include Wild About Plymouth events at the University (21 January) and the National Marine Aquarium (16 February).

A National Storytelling Week event will take place on 4 February in the Children’s Section of Waterstones in the Drake Circus shopping mall.

Roman-themed half term workshops will be held at Plymouth Guildhall on 15 February. World Book Day 2017 will be marked with a fun event at the Central Library on 2 March.

Who was the real Saint Valentine?

The tradition that romantics show their affection by exchanging tokens of love, letters and cards to their 'Valentine' on February 14th has been popular since the mid Seventeenth century in the UK. As many of us start to consider how we to spoil that special someone this year - a romantic meal, city break, an overly affectionate showering of gifts or just a bottle of plonk accompanied by chocolates and wine: have we ever wondered why this ritual exists and how it all began?

Saint Valentine, officially known as Saint Valentine of Rome, was a third-century Roman saint. Although not much of St. Valentine's life is known, it is highly agreed that St. Valentine was martyred and then buried on the Via Flaminia to the north of Rome.

The Emperor at the time, Claudius II, decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, therefore, he outlawed marriage for young men so that he had a strong and fulsome Army. Valentine, who had been imprisoned previously for continuing to try to convert people to Christianity, defied the Emperors wishes and secretly performed weddings for young lovers desperate to commit their love to each other.

Imprisoned for his treachery, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who many believe to have been the jailer's daughter — who visited him during his confinement.

Before he died, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still used in many Valentine's cards today. Although there are several theories about Saint Valentine, what is apparent in all the accounts of his life is his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure.

Claudius became raged and sentenced Valentine to death, commanding him to renounce his faith or be beaten with clubs and beheaded. St. Valentine refused to renounce his faith and Christianity and was executed outside the Flaminian Gate on February 14, 269.

On A Mission

Having recently taken over as the manager of The Mission in Sir John Hawkins Square, Lee Fuller takes time out to talk about the iconic building, their exciting Sunday Roasts as well as what 2017 has in store.

For those who have never been to The Mission, what can they expect?

The first thing that really strikes you at The Mission is the beauty of the building. The vaulted ceiling and original stained glass windows gives our diners an instant wow factor. In a city that was heavily bombed during the blitz its a real treat to sit and dine in a building with such history that remained intact.

We really do pride ourselves on our food and drinks here, we’re a young, talented and motivated team dedicated - exhaustingly - to producing great value food from our local area.

Don’t expect small portions of over priced fancy fare here, we want you to leave our restaurant feeling full and healthy and supportive of your local producers. Our fish comes straight from the market and our meat comes from Gribbles butcher who give us a list of where every single cut of meat we use is farmed in Devon. Our vegetables and our dairy are solely from Devon based suppliers. Our head chef Dan is new to his post but worked for the family here for a long time. A Plymouth lad originally he really knows his stuff and an absolute pleasure to work with.

He creates honest, delicious food that keeps getting better and better, receiving rave reviews from our guests.

Our bar is stocked with local ciders, gins, ales and even sparkling Devonshire wine. I’ve put together a relatively short but thought out wine list to suit everyones tastes and a good selection of classic cocktails to enjoy. Our coffee is roasted right here in Plymouth by the Devon Coffee Company.

You've also recently taken over managing The Mission, what is your background and what do you think of the food and drink scene in Plymouth?

My background is purely hospitality. I started in kitchens at 14 as a KP and trained in a highly regarded kitchen in Kent to be a chef, I then worked in the kitchens at The Royal Clarence with the Michael Caines team before moving to Falmouth down in Cornwall to help build a house with my dad as a family home. Still in kitchens I worked with as much fresh fish and learnt my trade inside out.

Alongside the cooking I researched and learnt as much as I could about wine and service - often spending my days off from the kitchen working front of house or studying a different wine region or grape. I travelled as often as possible, eating my way through as many European cities as I could afford.

For me theres nothing better than putting yourself in a completely different place and immersing yourself in the local food and drink - its the best way to learn and my favourite universal language seems to be meal times.

I then set up and had an ownership of three restaurants in Falmouth, this was a great part of my career and the restaurants are still thriving and busy now. My role became more front of house and management based. I get a real buzz from customer interaction and truly love to see guests sat at the dinner table chatting and eating and drinking. After selling my share of the company a couple of years ago I headed to Italy to reconnect with my passion, for me the Italians truly understand meal times and the importance of appreciating them. I feel very at home there.

The food and drink scene in Plymouth is extremely exciting, we’ve got great produce on our doorstep and more and more people are starting to use it and make the most out of it.

Influences from all over the world are popping up with some great Asian food, Polish restaurants and Italian gems dotted around the place. For

me, Plymouth is really proving itself as a multi cultured innovative city thats attracting more and chefs, waiting staff, mixologists that are all keen put their own stamp on the city. I’m really thrilled to be part of it and very proud of our part we’re playing here at The Mission Having worked in other restaurants, what is it about The Mission that appealed to you?

Firstly it was the building - the age, the history, the beauty of the place gives it an instant welcoming and atmospheric feeling. The sort you can only get from a building with history, thats been used.

I like the fact that its a family run business and instantly liked what I saw of the family that own The Mission. Good bosses are important to me and the Haijiyianni family are a hard working hospitality family who look after their staff and lead by example, they are making a positive impact on the Plymouth hospitality scene and thats something that I want to be part of. When I was told of the management position at The Mission it was a no brainer really!

The restaurant is located in an iconic, and very unique building, how does this add to the dining experience?

For me, the thing that I love the very most about this building are the acoustics and spacious large dining room. The high ceiling and exposed beams soak up the rat-a-tat of a busy service and allow our diners to enjoy their conversation across the table without having to shout or get a headache from cutlery clings, plate rattles or noisy tables. It might seem like a small thing to most but I think anyone thats sat in an overcrowded restaurant and struggled to talk over the table will understand.

When you sit in The Mission you can just focus on your friends and your meal and your experience whilst your here. It has a warmth a real feeling of home. Mealtimes are the most important time of any day in my opinion, a time where we can chat and share our thoughts and look after our bodies

with good food. The mission is one of those few restaurants that allow you to do that.

What can we find on the menu?

As I said before we focus on good, honest, healthy food cooked here on the premises by our talented kitchen team. Classic dishes of fish and chips and homemade beef burgers sit alongside organic chicken breast with lentils and creamy mash, whole roasted fish and chargrilled steaks. We want our diners to leave feeling they’ve had good value for money, filling meals cooked by chefs with a true passion for flavour and ingredients. The menus are changed as seasonal produce comes and goes. Traditional, warming dishes are cooked with technical precision, care and attention.

How important is local produce in your menu and how lucky are we to have such great local produce in the South West?

The South West is like no other place in the country in my opinion, we are truly blessed to be able to source our fish, our meat, our vegetables all from our local area. Our fishing coast is one of the best in the world and we are within walking distance of our fresh fish markets - it makes our job so much easier and enjoyable to have all of this amazing produce around. Local sourcing is more than important - it’s a duty of any restaurant.

It supports our local economy and gives us a healthier, more balanced diet.

As humans we are tuned to eat whats in our local area - the South West really has no excuse but to eat well and healthily and more and more restaurants and home diners are aware of this now.

All of us at The Mission are truly passionate about our sourcing and the care we take with the produce we receive. I think it shows in the end product and our guests here certainly appreciate the work we put in.

You've also recently introduced Sunday lunches to The Mission. How have they been received?

The Sunday roasts have been such a joy to work on. From starting off doing a couple of tables we now have a full dining room every week with happy customers. Sunday family lunch will always remain for me the most important meal of the week - I love to serve our guests and be part of their Sunday meal. For me its a real day of family time, a chance to relax and spend quality time with friends or family and talk about your week and whats to come over the following days. We have a selection of 3 meats, vegetarian meals and fish dishes. Plenty of delicious fresh vegetables, homemade gravies and Yorkshire puddings and desserts. Alongside the great food we’ve got some perfect red wines to wash it down with Other than exceptional food and drink, what else can The Mission cater for?

We’re now getting more and more interest in The Mission as a private hire venue. It lends itself beautifully to small weddings, christenings and get togethers. Our chefs work closely to produce bespoke menus to cater for any needs and our spacious dining room and bar are both perfect for parties.

What does 2017 hold for The Mission?

I’m so excited for 2017! With our new head chef and Plymouths growing dining scene I’m just looking forward to pushing through and keeping up our momentum. Working on our menus and with our suppliers to give our guests the best experience possible. I’m going to really work on our bar area and our cocktail list. A pre dinner dinner cocktail is a really lovely treat and our guests are enjoying our offering we have at the moment. So I’m doing lots of research into the original, classic cocktails for an exciting new list. I want to mirror the passion we have for our food into our cocktails - giving our guests an insight into where the drinks were first created, making them to original recipes with as much local influence as possible.

Burns father was a tenant farmer, and although not rich, wanted the best for his son and in the established Scottish tradition made sure young Robert was well educated. Burns received instruction in Latin, French and mathematics and it was also about this time (aged 15) that Burns turned his hand to poetry.

Along with an education came a developing social life. Not only was Burns learning about the world but whilst working on his father's ďŹ elds he met a young girl named Nelly. He soon found himself ďŹ led with passion for what he would later call "man's ďŹ rst great pleasure in life," and wrote one of his earliest poems about the girl.

As the young Burns grew, so did his success with women. Male friends would comment that Burns would leave them at a tavern if a feminine opportunity presented itself. He would later go on to have fourteen children with six different mothers.

With a rich social life, but from an upbringing that taught him hard work, and the ways of the land, Burns became a freemason (of St David's Lodge, Tarbolton), in 1781. His lifelong connection with freemasonry provided a constant social support as well offering him connections to in uential parties.

After his fathers death in 1874, Burns become a regular churchgoer ('Kirk'). Its strong links to the rural community along with its guardianship of public morality would serve as much as a crutch as well as a source of devilment.

The years 1784 to 1785 were some of Burns's most proliďŹ c periods. Robert was working on his farm in Mossgiel, writing poetry, living with Jean Armour, who was pregnant by him, it seemed that things had worked out well for Burns. Unfortunately, not all in the garden was rosey. Armour's marriage to Burns was opposed by her father, the farm was not proďŹ table, the only way out, it seemed, was to emigrate. His plans to sail to the Caribbean were well advanced when he was advised by a local lawyer, Gavin Hamilton that to ďŹ nance the voyage he should publish some of his poems.

The new Sauvignon Blanc part one

Over the past thirty years (yes!) Sauvignon Blanc has been with us in the UK in one form or another. Tasting it with a recognisable label has been a comparatively new phenomenon as most wines consumed in the UK market were void of this info. Then around the 1980’s the Australian wine revolution kicked in and offered us labels that were clear and precise. The name of the grape was emblazoned on the front of the bottle.

Chardonnay suddenly appeared and changed the drinking habits of our wine sipping nation.

But Sauvignon Blanc seemed to be lacking around this time as big and bold Aussie reds and whites dominated our palates. The simple reason we did not see Sauvignon Blanc as much was Australia made very little. Sauvignon Blanc is simply a cool climate grape and apart from obvious isolated micro-regions not much was being produced.

But wait wasn’t France making Sauvignon Blanc around this time? You wouldn’t have known it as the current white wines of the time often just had the name of the town, hamlet or district on the bottle not allowing recognition of the grape.

Sancerre, Touraine and Pouilly Fume were certainly on wine lists and being quietly and stylishly consumed without most wine drinkers knowing that Sauvignon Blanc was the only grape allowed when making the wines.

Around 1979 the first commercial Sauvignon Blanc started to come out of New Zealand.

This was also around the time David Honen of Western Australia’s Cape Mentelle Vineyards hired winemaker Kevin Judd to make Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough and started to produce the now fabled Cloudy Bay wines.

Fast forward to 1985 when Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc started to win medals for what best could be described as a “fruit-forward” style as opposed to the more acid-mineral based style of Sancerre. A star was born and the rest as they say is history!

We now consume oodles of bottles of the stuff purchasing from Supermarkets, Wines Shops and on-line. New Zealand had found a real winner and for many this Gooseberry/Passion fruit dry style of wine is the wine of choice.

Most of the New Zealand’s Sauvignon Blanc is now shipped in baulk and bottled in the UK. This has enabled volumes to be transported easily and has for the most, kept the price in check. All in all a good thing!

But have you ever wondered about different styles of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc? Might you be aware there might be another grape added to the wine or the use of oak could add a vanilla curve to the finished wine? Does this matter? It seems not as out thirst seems unabated.

Marlborough is in New Zealand’s South Island and is by far the largest area planted with Sauvignon Blanc. The majority of the grapes are machine-harvested three years after planting.

There are also sub-districts in the Marlborough, the soils and aspect affect the taste of the grape and eventually the wine. Coupled with different wine making techniques in the winery different styles have emerged to create “house styles” that some of you would be familiar with.

With something to suit all tastes, The Ship will be serving two roast dinners every Sunday, two flavoursome curries every Wednesday and two portions of award winning fish and chips every Friday, each for just £15. The more adventurous winemakers are also “out there” and are creating different wines that are becoming sought after especially on the UK market.

These wines are obtainable from quality importers, wine merchants and restaurants and are often in small quantities making it a tad difficult to keep up with volumes as so little is available.

The St Austell Brewery-owned pub can cater for large and small group bookings in its upstairs restaurant, taking parties of up to 50 people in the main restaurant and up to 25 in the adjacent Quay room.

So Independent wine merchants are the place to experiment with different styles of Sauvignon Blanc and for some of you it will be a revelation.

I mentioned the celebrated winemaker Kevin Judd from Cloudy Bay. After 25 vintages he left the eponymous winery in 2009 and set up Greywacke to create his own wines. I recently met him and tasted his entire range of six vintages of Sauvignon Blanc accompanied with some outstanding tapas styled dishes at Belita restaurant in Bristol. More of that outstanding tasting so do look out in the next edition.

With an impressive and good value menu of fresh dishes, many inspired by and sourced from the local sea and countryside, The Ship provides an ideal destination at any time of the year. All dishes are prepared to order and the menu is supplemented by an ever-changing specials board.

Choosing the right wedding venue When getting married the 'where' is one of the most important decisions you have to make, It can structure all the other aspects with couples planning their entire day around their dream venue.

Here are some things to consider along with some ideal, local, venues.

1. How many people will you invite?

Forget the dreaded table plan for the moment.

Now is the time to make a list of family and friends that you would like to share your special day with. It's always a good idea to put a couple of lists together, as your venue may not be able to cater for large numbers. It may well be worth asking the venues you go to see, to give you a maximum number as they can comfortably seat, along with minimum requirements.

Also, it is easier to add names than to deduct, so keep the numbers low initially,

2. Budget

Decide between yourselves what you are willing to pay for your big day. Do your homework; find out what the going rate is across a number of venues and also what else they may be able to add to the day to save money further down the line.

Try and budget the entire wedding. Think of aspects of the day that you, or friends and family, can help out with. How much of your entire budget will you want to spend on the venue?

3. Choose a date and have flexibility.

Try and be as flexible as you can, Is it feasible to hold the wedding on a week day or choose an off-season month,?

If so, you’ll often be able to secure the venue of your dreams at a lower rate.

4. Draw up a shortlist based on location/logistics

After you have an idea of your guest list, consider whether you require transportation for guests from a hotel to your venue and then onto a reception.

Will you need to lay on transportation?

If people are driving, is there enough parking?

Are there any guests who require special needs?

5. Style and Feel

You can take a look at images, get an idea of what looks good 'style wise', as well as see how the venue looks at the same time of year that you are planning your own wedding.

7. Full Service or Not?

Most full service wedding venues will cover everything from table and chair rentals, to linens and catering supplies, while a non-full service venues, generally, offer you the space and it is up to you to find the rest.

What style of wedding are you after?

Romantic, Historic, Countryside, Urban, Barn..... all of these ideas sound appealing.

Therefore, the responsibility of finding all the other services will be down to you. You may, or may not have the time or inclination to take this on board.

Many couples think that they don’t need to decide on a wedding style early on, but it's one of the most important decisions because you might be able to save on decorations and decor if you select a venue that suits your wedding day style.

7. Visit each venue and draw up a list of questions. Ideally, visit at the time of day you want to get married.

6. Research local Photographers and Planners' blogs/websites.

There is certainly no substitute for visiting a number of venues to get an idea of which one stands out.

If you are now formulating a shortlist of potential venues, ask if they use any particular photgraphers or wedding planners.

Ask plenty of questions, don't be afraid. Get to know your contact and make sure they get to know you. Once you have covered everything, and I mean everything, get it in writing.

In this day and age, many photographers and planners will have their own website and may even write a blog about weddings they have organised/shot.

7 Step guide to a Fitter and Healthier You for 2017!

1. Find Your Motivation:

What is motivating you to want to exercise?

Is it to lose weight, look better in your clothes, increase strength, run a marathon, feel more energetic or simply improve your health?

2. Have a Plan:

Once you’ve established what your motivation is, then you need to have a plan and this where a Personal Trainer can be most effective to establishing new routines and positive exercise habits. Discussing these factors with your trainer will help you be more clear about what you want and also motivate and inspire you throughout the journey.

You don't need specialist equipment to train your core, any exercise or activity that involves maintaining a stable torso can strengthen these muscles. There are also many exercises out there to specifically target this area which you may want to try or add to any fitness programmes that you may do.

Your core is a complex series of muscles stemming far beyond just your abs, including all muscles attached to your torso area. Core muscles are incorporated in almost every movement of the human body, and can act as isometric or dynamic stabilisers for movement or can initiate movement themselves.

A great exercise for core conditioning is the 'plank' which supports proper posture and balance if done correctly.

How to do a basic plank

Some of the muscles involved in your core include:

Hold your elbows directly under your shoulders and place your wrists in line with your elbows.

Push your body up into your upper back and hold your chin close to your neck. In this position, brace your abdominals. (Contract them), squeeze your gluteal (tailbone) and thigh muscles simultaneously while continuing to breathe normally.

We have lots of classes here at the YMCA to improve this key area of the body, we also have a very knowledgeable and experienced team of instructors that can get those core muscles firing.

Major muscles included are the pelvic floor muscles, transversus abdominis, multifidus, internal and external oblique’s, rectus abdominis, erector spinae, especially the longissimus thoracis, and the diaphragm.

Core exercises are a very important part of a well-rounded fitness programme, but are very often neglected. A stronger core will create better body stability, balance and movement for every day, and/or sporting activities.

3. Make Goals:

Goals help measure progress and training with a PT will help you establish goals that a specific and important to you.

4. Train SMART with a Progressive Programme: A major mistake many people make when tackling a New Health Resolution is trying to do everything at once and setting perhaps unrealistic or unachievable goals that often fall by the wayside after a few weeks or so.

By setting SMART goals early on with your trainer (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timed) will help you stay on track with your training, establishing new goals along the way, by following, safe, fun, effective and progressive exercise programme.

5. Eat Healthy and track what you eat:

Establishing a SMART and effective exercise plan is great, but equally important is good nutrition and putting the right fuel in your body to stay healthy and energised. Your trainer will be able to give you sensible advice on healthy eating, review what you eat and drink, have a look at good and bad habits and make suggestions where you can make improvements.

6. Drink more water!

During the Festive Season most of us drink perhaps a little too much alcohol and not enough water! Alcohol and high fat, salty and sweet foods, all contribute to dehydrating the body.

Drinking more water not only helps keep us hydrated but has many other fantastic benefits, i.e. increases energy and relieves fatigue, flushes out toxins, improves skin complexion, natural headache remedy, helps improve concentration, to name just a few.

7. Rest and Recovery

Once you’ve established a SMART and effective exercise programme and a balanced and healthy eating plan, you then need to ensure that you give your body adequate rest and recovery.

Getting “Bang for your buck” in training

When training to lose bodyfat I recommend people to use exercises that over more “bang for your buck” which require more energy to perform and continue to burn energy long after the session has nished. Exercises such as squats, lunges, as well as pressing and pulling exercises require lots of energy to perform and speed up the process of improving your physique.

Performing light exercise such as a long slow run can help you, but you will have to work much longer to get anywhere near the same level of energy expenditure.

No gym? No problem!

For people who don’t have access to a gym Interval Training is a great tool for fat loss and o ers better energy expenditure than traditional low intensity exercise running. Idea’s such as using evenly spread lamp posts can produce a visually stimulating way to perform intervals - sprint past 2 lamp posts, then walk to the next, then sprint the next 2 and so on.

The only person who can stop you from achieving the results you want in 2017 is you so get motivated, be consistent and work hard, and very quickly you’ll see that all of your effort is worth it.

Joe Wicks is an online nutrition coach and creator of the 90 Day SSS Plan which has transformed the lives of tens of thousands of people all over the world! Here, the man known as The Body Coach, talks food, fitness, fame. Plus, you can win a copy of his latest 'Lean In 15' meal plan and workout book.

So, it was about 5 years ago you got into fitness?

What sort of drunk are you?

Yeah, I became a PT, got into social media and the rest is history. I haven’t just popped up from nowhere, I have been working hard building up a community and a social media following.

I’m a friendly drunk and I like to dance! My ideal night out is dinner with cocktails but I’m not about raving I had a little phase, I thought I was an eat London rave but I burnt out after about three months and thought, this isn’t for me!

Why has fitness become such a big trend?

You were spotted out with Ellie Goulding earlier this year..?

It’s cool to go to the gym now. Women now are more into fitness and sports than before. There is so much option now. Wearing your gym gear out used to be embarrassing now it’s a whole fashion trend! And, yeah, people are generally more aware of nutrition and eating well… I don’t know why but it’s a good thing. I like to think I’ve had an influence.

She’s a friend of mine. Her manager signed up to my plan and we made friends that way. She’s a vegan though, she doesn’t do my plan. We’ve only met five times but she’s cool.

I increase people calories, and they get their own support coach they can email. The plan is tailored as well, it isn’t generic. People see a real transformation.

That’s exactly why I started to do what I do.

There is so much nonsense out there. Lowcalorie diets do not work long-term. They just don’t. You’ll lose weight, then binge and re-gain it all. The answer is eating well all the time and that’s what my plans are about because I re-educate people about their bodies and about food.

Do you always eat really well?

I have to be really strict to get this lean. Not boozing…staying away from treats. A typical day’s meal will be scrambled egg or an omelette for breakfast then a massive chicken burger that I make myself. For dinner maybe a Thai Green Curry. All made myself, of course!

When was the last time you had, like, a Burger King or Mac Donalds?

Oh, about three years ago in Ibiza. Fast food makes me ill now. My body isn’t used to it.

What’s your ‘cheat food?’

I love ice cream and a it of chocolate. I can’t stop though; Once I start I need the whole bar!

Do you go for big nights out?

I go out about twice a month, I get really drunk!

I can get drunk off three cocktails because my body isn’t used to it.

John Terry follows me on Instagram, Ella Eyre, Jessie J, Charlotte Crosby. I don’t hang with celebrities.

Have you been over to try to crack America?

I’m really well known in the UK but America is harder so I’ve had to go over a few times to try to get myself known. But I’ve been on prime time TV over there – it’s happening!

My plan is to get every single person in the world lean so I need to be on TV in every country in the world and want my books in every country. The power of social media is amazing – I’ve got over 100,000 people sign up to my plan in just over two and a half years.

I went to Barcelona for a few days and left my phone in the safe for two days. Slowed my brain down a little bit. Was really nice and relaxing and let me get my focus back. It was on my own. I need holidays by myself every now and then just to recharge but I live for boy’s holidays. I took them all to Vegas and we’re going to Dubai. I’m doing a talk over there for an hour and, with the money I’m getting paid for that, I’m flying all my mates over for a week. Eight of us. They’re my best friends, the boys I grew up with. We call ourselves The Vegas Eight based on our last holiday – that’s the name of our WhatsApp group

– but we’ll change the name to The Dubai Eight after this trip. They’re the boys I trust with my life.

How’s your life changed since getting famous?

I don’t think I’m famous. I might get recognised occasionally but my life hasn’t really changed day-to-day. The biggest change its that I can be more generous. I used to have to save up for everything, holidays would take me months to save up for. Now, to be able to take all my mates away, it’s such a nice feeling.

What’s been your biggest splurge?

I bought my mum a house in Epsom in Surrey.

She loves it. I’m building my own house and renting while that’s happening. Every day is different and so much fun. I don’t even feel like I’m working.

Do you ever just want privacy?

I love what I do. The thing is, we are all always on our phones – all the time – anyway. So I’m trying to make a living out of it. If I’m on my phone, it’s not because I’m being anti-social it’s because I’m creating a community and helping people. People expect it, they want the next recipe or workout. It’s not tiring because it’s what I love and why I do what I do. I didn’t realise that a million followers equated to a business and people wanting to buy stuff and sponsor or advertise with you. I was never motivated by that. I’ve always been about free content. Even though my book is £8, I posted 6,000 videos on Instagram over two years to build that trust.

What do you think about the naked selfie culture from some celebs?

I think Instagram is somewhere you go to be beautiful and Snapchat is somewhere you go to be real. You can filter yourself so much on Instagram. If you met the Kardashian girls in real life, they are not going to look like that! They will not be that immaculate! I think it’s so unrealistic and dangerous for girls. It’s all fake. No one is that beautiful naturally. Whereas I use social media to promote healthy body image.

Have you ever had negative comments or trolling?

It’s generally very positive. I’ve been called a ‘sellout’ a few times, but whatever! If anyone said something really negative - which is like 0.01% of all the comments because most of them are so nice – I would just block them immediately. I don’t see nasty trolling or ego, really.

What are you plans for the future?

World domination!

I’d love to move to Santa Monica and have a TV show in America. I’d love to spend summers in the UK and winters there. I just want to keep doing what I’m doing.

A happy Apprentice: Natasha Duncan working in Marketing at Mind Sports International Natasha, 19, is doing her Marketing Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship with Acacia Training and Development at Mind Sports International in Plymouth, and she loves every minute of it.

From leaving school Natasha travelled and worked in Italy for 5 months on an Erasmus programme gaining valuable work experience.

She discovered early that she preferred handson work rather going to University. She did Business at school and decided that this is what

she wanted to do. Her friends also recommended an Apprenticeship to her because “…you can learn and earn money at the same time.”

Natasha saw the job offer of Mind Sports online and applied. It was clear from the interview that this is not your normal work environment. Mind Sports was created to bring more value to the Mind Sports, poker and gaming arenas through live events around the world. Natasha started the Apprenticeship in June 2016 and is already in

Apprenticeships: We’re not telling you it’s going to be easy, we’re telling you it’s going to be worth it.

Earlier this year GHQ welcomed Kathryn to the team, as Receptionist for the summer, before she headed off to Uni. Kathryn has reflected on her time at GHQ and wrote about her experience in this blog!

Sat at the reception desk I met every different kind of person as they walked through the door for an interview with our Recruitment team.

They were all intelligent people. They just had different goals and aspirations. After all you can’t go to university to be a Hairdresser; and, why would you?

There is no point putting yourself in immense debt if you could get a similar qualification in an Apprenticeship which allows you to earn a wage whilst learning your trade. If you want to go into childcare, yes you could go to university but you risk putting yourself in debt when you could do a childcare Apprenticeship that will lead you to the same career goals. Whilst gaining the actual skills and the practical experience in the workplace and earning a wage throughout.

Kathryn The summer following my A Levels were finished and I was waiting to hear about my future, I was desperate for a full-time job. I was working in a restaurant but they weren’t giving me the hours that I wanted to keep me occupied or that I needed to save money. My boyfriend at the time was in the Navy which meant I could only see him on weekends and working in the hospitality industry made that difficult. I went hunting for a Monday to Friday office job but failed miserably.

Then an opportunity opened at GHQ Training and I fell into the role of being their Monday – Friday Receptionist.

I learnt a lot about Apprenticeships and what they can offer. It’s a lot more straightforward and a lot more beneficial than people might realise.

With GHQ Training, it is simple. You go online and apply. They contact you for an interview, you tell them the placements you are interested in and they start the process.

You spend no money in this process and as soon as you start working you will be earning an Apprenticeship wage, which goes up after the first year to your age group’s minimum wage.

Whilst working for GHQ Training, they offered me an Apprenticeship to learn Business Skills and gain a business qualification. I had always dreamt of going to university, so I said that if it didn’t work out for me then I’d be really pleased to take them up on the offer.

There is no point putting yourself in immense debt if you could get a similar qualification in an Apprenticeship which allows you to earn a wage whilst learning your trade.

When I first started in this role I knew very little about Apprenticeships. I went to a Grammar school so the main thing they encouraged was university. Apprenticeships to me were for those who didn’t do well in school. However, being at GHQ Training changed my view point completely.

University isn’t for everyone, however the more qualifications you have the more employable you are so an Apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity. GHQ Training make it a quick and simple process.

1) When choosing an estate agent, it is key that you have faith in them to sell your house.

Ensure that you use an estate agent that is fully licensed by the National Association of Estate Agents. This ensures that the person you have picked to sell your home has committed to raising the standards within our industry. They will have passed exams to become qualified in the sale of residential property and will be bound by a strict code of practice.

3) Don’t sign a long term contract! If an agent is asking you to sign an agreement to stay with them for a minimum term then question why they are doing this. If an agent is delivering on their promises you won’t look elsewhere for alternatives, so choose an agent that has no tie in period so if things aren’t working out you can move on and try an agent that is more suited.

Over the past 12 years, the percentage of people owning their own properties, in England, fell from 71% to 64%, with the steepest drop among young people.

For those aged 25-34, the rate of home ownership fell from 59% in 2003 to 37% in 2015.

This, despite government backed incentives such as the Help to Buy scheme and the fact that house building in England was at its strongest level in eight years, with the number of new homes being built having increased 11% in a year.

Help to Buy - Mortgage Guarantee: This scheme is designed to help homeowners as well as first time buyers to purchase either a new build or an existing property in the UK with as little as 5 per cent deposit (up to a maximum price of £ 600,000).

A mortgage of up to 95 per cent is required from a lender, of which the Government will guarantee the lender up to 15 per cent of the property’s value.These purchases cannot be a shared ownership or shared equity purchase. The home cannot be a second home or a buy-to-let property.

The government has also agreed to spend an extra £1.4bn on affordable housing in England.

Local authorities will be able to bid for the money under one of three existing schemes : Affordable Rent, Shared Ownership or Rent to Buy. With this in mind, the Chancellor, Phil Hammond, announced in his Autumn Statement. £2.3bn would be spent on infrastructure - such as roads - related to housing developments. The chancellor said the money would support the building of up to 100,000 new homes, and amounted to a "step-change" in help for the industry.

Help to Buy – Isa: Potential home buyers can start to save for a deposit and for every £ 200 saved, the government will add a £ 50 bouns (up to a maximum of £ 3000 bonus). This means that buyers needing a £ 15,000 deposit will save £ 12,000 and the government will boost it with £ 3,000 helping them to reach their target quicker.
