DEAR HUMMEL RETAILER 2014 - ANOTHER RECORD YEAR! This year, we have expanded our collaboration with FC St. Pauli! A partnership driven by strong, joint brand values, karma being one, and by hummel’s passion for the iconic club shared by 18 million fellow sympathisers. Chevrons and totenkopfs are now united on the field in an exciting sport collection created by our designers. In Europe our football business is growing e.g. in Spain where we now equip eight teams in La Liga and Secunda B. As leading handball brand, we have initiated collaboration with Füchse Berlin, a top team in DKB Handball-Bundesliga, Germany’s best division. We are proud to be sharing our chevrons with this bunch of fighters and believers.

Within hummel’s core business areas our NOOS (never out of stock) system is our primary business driver. As a result, we have been developing our express delivery system and extending our range of NOOS products; hereby ensuring a fast and easy delivery of constantly growing product lines. NOOS will continue to be the key focus of our retailer service programme.

In 2015 we will present our exciting new retail system; an important tool to create positive shopping experiences worldwide while meeting the needs of our retailers.

Over the past 20 years, we have experienced profitable growth based on stable business operations which have led to a strong financial situation. With this we will continue to change the world through sport in 2015.

It is a universal language, which holds the power to eliminate differences in politics, culture, religion and beliefs.We believe we can make a real change in the world by using sport to create understanding, respect and unity without borders.

1923 After having watched a football match in the pouring rain, young shoemaker Albert Messmer develops one of the first football cleats the world has ever seen. In the aftermath he founds the company Messmer & Co. with his brother Michael Ludwig Messmer in the Hamburg suburb of Eppendorf.

1956 The visionary Bernhard Weckenbrock takes over the company. He believes that the product needs to have a unique personality, which athletes can identify with. From this philosophy emerges the classic chevron logo, which symbolizes team spirit, progression and a drive to win. Partnered with the main bumblebee logo, the identity of the new hummel is now in place.

1968 hummel signs its first sponsorship deal with football club, Duisburg, from the 2nd German Bundesliga.

1969 hummel launches its first collection of sportswear.

Promotional sponsorships help sales, and the company enjoys massive success. Later that year, the hummel logo (the bumblebee) is created – in a somewhat rounder version.

1988 hummel signs a sponsorship deal with mighty Real Madrid – and with the club’s biggest star, Danish football’s nightmare, Emilio Butragueño. The deal sees the sale of hummel products hit the roof across Europe.

1992 The Danish national football team wins the European Championship – wearing hummel. Since Denmark has not qualified regularly and is admitted only 10 days before the beginning of the tournament at expense of former Yugoslavia, problems arise concerning delivery of playing kits to the team. In accordance with Denmark’s unexpected success, national team jerseys are ripped off the shelves in sports stores across the country.

1999 With THORNICO as the new owner, Christian Stadil makes his entrance at hummel. He launches a collection of reintroduced, original sport styles into the fashion market. This establishes hummel as a trendsetting sports apparel brand.

2012 hummel strengthens in the German market by signing a sponsorship deal with Karlsruher SC and also introducing an off-field deal with FC St. Pauli which equips the club with boots, bags, underwear, goalkeeper gloves and fashion sneakers.

2013 The year of our 90th anniversary was both busy and exciting. We published a brand book and launched a range of anniversary products. Just the right way to celebrate an important milestone in hummel’s history.

2014 This year, we have both expanded our collaboration with FC St Pauli and signed Füchse Berlin; an exciting new development that both cements hummel as a leading handball brand and strengthens our presence on the football field.

Apart from their colourful profile, FC St Pauli is also engaged in several projects with the aim to change the world through sport; a focus completely in sync with hummel’s vision.

COOL ZONE — Applies to­Textiles Using selected material and construction methods for increased breathability and thermal property management, hummel Cool Zone is designed to keep your body and feet cool and dry throughout the match.

DRY ZONE — Applies to­Textiles The hummel Dry Zone features functional outdoor apparel made exclusively from breathable and waterproof fabrics that are able to endure the most rigorous weather conditions. Perspiration is transported from the body out through the fibers of the fabric enabling the body to stay dry and comfortable.

FIT ZONE — Applies to­Textiles & Footwear Created through close collaboration with professional athletes and technicians, the unique Fit Zone supplies better comfort and performance for both hummel textile and footwear products.

PIVOT ZONE — Applies to­Footwear Positioned on the ball of the foot to control the grip and maximize stability thus reducing the risk of injury, this zone will benefit the players by further enhancing their ability to pivot freely on court.

GRIP ZONE — Applies to­Textiles & Footwear Specifically designed for resin application on footwear, grip zone features extra durability, added stability and unique visual branding. On textiles a silicone print gives e.g. better ball control.

FLEX ZONE — Applies to­Textiles & Footwear Designed to provide ultimate flexibility within hummel apparel products thus enabling you to move freely. For footwear this zone is created to allow the shoe to flex naturally in the forefoot.

IMPACT ZONE — Applies to­Footwear The impact zone is a shock absorbing material injected into the midsole designed to maximize shock absorption. Ankles, knees and hip joints will benefit from a superior shock absorbing material placed in this key area of the outsole.

STABILITY ZONE — Applies to­Footwear Specifically designed for increased lateral stability and optimal traction.

GUARD ZONE — Applies to­Textiles & Footwear On footwear the guard zone is a specially designed zone which strengthens the toe box area of the shoe through a layer of high durability rubber. The design of the upper is done without stitches or seems in this all important area of the shoe which is normally prone to damage. On textiles the guard zone implies e.g. a thicker layer of padding on elbows.

POLYGIENE — Applies to­Textiles Based on natural silver salt, Polygiene effectively inhibits the growth of odor-causing bacteria and eliminates fungi that contribute to tinea infections, more commonly known as jock itch and athlete’s foot while also prolonging the life of the product in question.

Rhein-Neckar Löwen THE HUNGRY LIONS FROM MANNHEIM RHEIN-NECKAR LÖWEN IS BASED IN THE CITY OF MANNHEIM, WHICH IS SITUATED IN WESTERN GERMANY. THE TEAM IS PLAYING IN THE DKB HANDBALL-BUNDESLIGA, THE MEN’S TOP HANDBALL LEAGUE. Rhein-Neckar Löwen is a rather young handball club. The club was first founded in 2002, making the lions from Mannheim barely 10 years old. In comparison, some of the other competitive clubs in the league have roots dating back to the 1860’s. Despite the club’s short lifespan, the lions have already shown that they mean business!

The team climbed their way to the top in three German Cup finals in 2006, 2007 and 2010. They also qualified for the EHF Cup Winners’ Cup final in 2008. However, it wasn’t until 2013 that Rhein-Neckar Löwen claimed their first ever trophy, beating Nantes in the EHF Cup final. This taste of victory has shown Rhein-Neckar Löwen’s seasoned competitors that the hungry lions are here to stay.

At hummel, we truly admire the fighting spirit of the lions from Mannheim.

Back in 2008, we formed a partnership with the handball club. Actually, we first entered the lion’s den just one-year prior, when we formed a personal sponsorship deal with the star player, Oliver Roggisch. Today, hummel still works closely with the mighty pivot,

— The lions’ den is the SAP Arena in Mannheim. This 13,200 capacity venue is one of the biggest arenas in the German league. The rivals from Hamburg have a capacity of 13,000, while the north German team, Kiel, can hold 10,250 spectators.

— Rhein-Neckar Löwen shares the grand SAP Arena with one of the country’s best ice hockey teams.

— Oliver Roggisch is a very passionate carp enthusiast. He studies them, feeds them and even swims with them!

Only three years later, Greuther Fürth completed a stunning championship hat-trick when the club once again defeated Herta BSC Berlin - this time in front of massive 50,000 spectators in a final with a hostile atmosphere and some pretty nasty tackles. These triumphs leave Greuther Fürth with three German Championship trophies in its cabinet.

Twenty years after the founding of Greuther Fürth, hummel was established on a muddy football pitch in a town a little further north. It was here that a man named Albert Messmer had a brilliant idea: to attach studs to the soles of football boots to stop the players from sliding on the wet, slippery pitch. Since then, a lot of water has run under the hummel bridge. Since becoming Danish-owned back in only 1980, hummel has continued to work in close relations to the neighbouring country to the south. Meaning, hummel has always kept close ties to Germany where the story of the hummel bee all started.

Karlsruher SC THE GOLDEN 90’S THE FOOTBALL CLUB, KARLSRUHER SC, IS BASED IN THE CITY OF KARLSRUHE IN THE SOUTH-WESTERN PART OF GERMANY. THE CLUB CURRENTLY PLAYS IN THE SECOND HIGHEST GERMAN DIVISION, THE 2. BUNDESLIGA.

FOUNDING YEAR 1894

Karlsruher SC was founded in October 1952 after two regional clubs, KFC ­Phoenix and VfB Mühlburg, united to become one strong force: ­Karlsruher SC. The solid club has since played in ­Germany’s top division for many seasons. In the 1987/1988 season, the successful Baden-Wurttemberg club once again promoted to the Bundes­liga. Through heroic efforts and unity, KSC managed to play 11 consecutive seasons in the Bundesliga before relegating in 1998.

At hummel we love a great underdog story just like ‘Das Wunder Vom Wildpark’. That is why we, in the 2012/2013 season, began a co-action with Karlsruher SC. Through the shared values of character, proud heritage and ambition, we know we can bring back the success of The Golden 90’s! KSC also shares our promising mission to Change The World Through Sport. Their regional, KSC macht Schule project, helps to educate young people with social problems of addiction and violence.

Over the years, Karlsruher SC hasn’t just performed well domestically; the club also made a remarkable performance in the European UEFA Cup. During the 1993/1994 season, KSC took on the fearsome Spaniards from Valencia in the second round. Many did not believe the Germans could win.

Karlsruher SC ended up losing the first game 3-1 and all hope was lost. In the next leg, the team found a victorious spirit and they thrashed Valencia 7-0 at Wildparkstadion. To this day still, people talk about this extraordinary comeback and refer to it as: ‘Das Wunder Vom Wildpark’.

Did you know?

— In the 7-0 win against Valencia, the legendary German goalkeeper, Oliver Kahn, played for KSC. Kahn made a number of crucial saves that helped them win the game.

Christiania Sports Club A COLORFUL COMBINATION OF DIVERSITY AND SPORT THE DANISH FOOTBALL CLUB CHRISTIANIA SPORTS CLUB IS LOCATED IN THE PROUD FREETOWN OF CHRISTIANIA, COPENHAGEN. THE CLUB IS CURRENTLY PLAYING IN THE COPENHAGEN DIVISION; DENMARK’S FIFTH BEST DIVISION. In 1980, a bunch of mates from C ­ hristiania are having a relaxed kickabout, as an enthralling idea is suddenly aired amongst them: “Why don’t we start our own football club?” Two years later, in 1982, a club named Christiania Sports Club is a reality representing the freetown of Christiania.

The club started off in the lower divisions but quickly increased the number of members, due to the strong recognition CSC obtained in the local community. In fact, now the club has 90 active members divided into seven teams and more than 200 passive members. In 2012, hummel entered a long-term partnership with the colourful Christiania sports Club due to shared and heartfelt values of respect for cultural diversity, alternative ways of living and profound wish to make the world a better place And CSC is experiencing commitment and support on several fronts. People are eager to show their support and unity for the freetown football club, and on a regular basis, actors, musicians, TV characters, artists, sport stars and the likes are spotted wearing the unique CSC jersey claiming the values and stance it represents.

FOUNDING YEAR 1982 The jersey is obviously also proudly worn by the players from CSC every time they step onto the pitch. Even though the club started off in the lower tiers of Danish football, the players, coaches, staff and supporters have given their all, so that the club now, for the first time in history, has reached the Copen­hagen Division, but the ambition doesn’t stop there: A common understanding between the members of the club is that CSC is aiming for the Superliga, which is the top level of Danish football.

SD Eibar UNDERDOG WITH A BITE THE SPANISH FOOTBALL CLUB SD EIBAR IS LOCATED IN THE PROUD TOWN OF EIBAR. THE CLUB IS CURRENTLY PLAYING IN LA LIGA; SPAIN’S BEST DIVISION. For the first time in its 74 years long history, the tiny Spanish football Club SD Eibar is set to join La Liga next season, rubbing shoulders with Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. Unfortunately, the club has to fight off the field too in order to reach its dreams.

Although Eibar has earned the right to play in La Liga on the football field, the little club from the Spanish Basque Country is now facing the financial absurdity of modern football. Eibar is self-sustaining, completely free from debt and all their players are paid on time. Nevertheless, Eibar has to come up with 1.7 million Euros by August 6th due to a law passed in 1999.

FOUNDING YEAR 1940 almost 90% of the capital raised and a month left to raise the rest. hummel is delighted to have found a kindred spirit with this sort of fighter’s mentality and is looking forward to following them the next three seasons!

— Only last year SD Eibar was promoted to the Segunda A division after spending 5 years in the Segunda B division, and since then they have climbed up the Spanish football ranks all the way to La Liga.

— The smallest club to have ever played in the top flight in England were Glossop North End, who hit the English First Division back in 1899 on a population of some 30,000. Eibar has 25,000 inhabitants.

Being a small club, Eibar is not in possession of that sort of money – and the story could have ended there, but it doesn’t! With a campaign “Defiende Al Eibar” the club now seeks to raise capital selling Eibar shares to football fans all over the world at 50 euro each.

HANDBALL INFLATION GUIDE PREPARATION During wintertime, we suggest to store the handballs at room temperature (20 – 25˚C) for minimum 24 hours before the first inflation in order to secure optimal softness, shape and grip.

VALVE OIL Drip 1 – 2 drops of hummel valve oil into the valve.

It is important that valve-oil is used at every inflation as it makes the valve seal properly.

INFLATE Position the valve upwards and insert the inflation needle straight into the valve. Always use a long pump needle to ensure the needle does not damage the valve or the bladder.

CHECK PRESSURE — I nflate the ball to the recommended pressure.

—R ecommended pressure is printed on the ball near the valve.

— I nflate slowly to allow the ball to gain its correct shape. Rapid inflation can damage the bladder.

—U se a pressure gauge to check the pressure of the ball.

Nowadays, the brand Füchse Berlin represents the entire city of Berlin, and every once in a while, the peaceful neighbourhood atmosphere is shattered by the passionate roar of 9,000 Füchse Berlin supporters, cheering their local heroes onto the field in the Max-Schmeling-Halle, which is located in the eastern part of Berlin. FURTHERMORE, ST PAULI IS CONSIDERED A CULTURAL STRONGHOLD IN GERMANY HOSTING A WIDE RANGE OF ARTISTS, AND WITH THE MILLERNTOR GALLERY PLACED IN THE STADIUM OF FC ST. PAULI, THE CULTURE OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD BECOMES AN INTEGRATED PART OF THE FOOTBALL CLUB. Along with its art and off-the-wall party scene, many also know the area for the credible football culture that exists in the district. At hummel, we’re very proud to supply the football boots for FC St. Pauli. In fact, the club play their home games only a few kilometres away from where hummel was founded on that muddy football field back in 1923.

— AC/DC’s song “Hells Bells” can be heard before every home game of FC St. Pauli. Also, every time the club scores at home, “Song 2” by Blur is played over the loud speakers to the fans.

— In 2006, the club hosted the FIFI Wild Cup, which is a tournament made up of unrecognised national football teams like Greenland, Tibet and Gibraltar.

They participated as the “Republic of St. Pauli”.

— Many consider FC St Pauli to be an icon of punk and related subcultures. Several international music bands such as Asian Dub Foundation, Gaslight Anthem and Sigur Rós have been seen sporting the club’s kits during concerts.
