Hi. I am Alican Inal. I am an urban designer and an architectural assistant based in London. I graduated from Bartlett School of Architecture with a MArch Urban Design (Distinction) degree. I also hold a BArch (Hons.) in Architecture and a BSc (Hons.) in Urban and Regional Planning. My work and line of research focus both on computational and cognitive gaps between architecture and urbanism, while being nourished by a wide range of disciplines from digital design to participatory design. My design thesis project at The Bartlett, named “Synesthete City”, was focused on data-driven and computational urban strategies, based on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Additionally, my dissertation “Soundscape of the Anthropocene” was dealing with generating new ways to interact with urban soundscapes, with a focus on sound data. In this project I start designing for 1:20000 scale and finalize by designing and fabricating 1:10 scale detail prototypes. Also, during my working experiences, I was a part of an international design team of architects and urban designers. I held the position of

Architectural Assistant / Urban Designer in two major urban design projects, namely a 180,000m² mixeduse development and a 70,000m² housing development. I would highlight that my experiences in architectural and urban practices up to the present have made me an excellent and rigorous team member. Additionally, I am well versed in visualisation, analytical thinking, 3D software capabilities and computational design. I possess experience and a high level of skill in various types of software, as confirmed in my CV. I am an quick learner, and some of my computational skills are unique. In addition to my digital and visual skills, I consider myself hardworking, vibrant, careful, self aware and intellectual. My substantial academic studies, non-academic experiences and professional experiences have provided me with the methodology for transforming information and producing scenarios through a process of considering the rapid changes in political, economic, social, and cultural factors. This, in turn, will truly define my main aim in academical and professional bodies.

TITLE Synesthete City | A Sound-Driven Cityscape for a

Speculative Education and Tech Hub for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park [2017 | Post-Graduate (MArch) | The Bartlett, UCL]

TUTORS Roberto Bottazzi | Kostas Grigoriadis ABSTRACT In the Bartlett School of Architecture, I was part of the Research Cluster 14 in the March Urban Design program, The aim of the studio is to explore the role of Big Data in urban design. I developed a project which was focused on data-driven and computational urban design processes, based on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. I mapped existing conditions as dynamic, volumetric flows in constant transformation operating at varying scales: by computing large amounts of data that we not only produce maps to ‘see’ the site of intervention differently but also to co-design it in conjunction with natural, complex forces whose complexity far exceeds the power designers have to control them. I also simultaneously carried out projects at different scales: material prototypes to urban strategies, we moved from the aerial view of the planner to the direct sensorial experience of the city and its dynamics. My project focused on a sound-data driven cityscape, for a speculative education and technology hub. The design proposal was conducted in parallel with in-depth studies of the soundscape theory. The main aim of the design investigation is to reveal a novel approach for a balanced soundscape. To fulfil this aim, a constructive approach to sound was used as the backbone to the whole body of the design work. Studies initiated with an extensive analysis of the current soundscape of the Olympic Park. The raw data from these recordings then manipulated with various digital tools and the sound structure of the current soundscape of the Park was built in terms of data visualisations and simulations.

TITLE Soundsphere | A Multi-functional Performance Space in Kadiköy Harbour [2014 | Diploma Project | 4th Year]

ABSTRACT “There is no such thing as an empty space or an empty time. There is always something to see, something to hear. In fact, try as we may to make a silence, we cannot.” [John Cage] The artificial pier area which is in the intersection point between The Kadiköy Dockland and recreation strip was expected to be function as a “Performance Space and Mediateque”. Alternative methods were investigated and developed to form a foundation for the relations between the functions and the urban area. Is it possible to create a “cause and effect” context based on the activity flow of the city? By revealing the increasing and decreasing activity shift of the city, it is possible. “Sound” can be a major source for diagnosing this activity shift. “Sound” is a transposed type of a data that includes every kind of activity parameter in itself.

ound is a representative of density. It concludes tonal and atonal

To deciphere the sound, 990 minutes of sound recordings were made in different 11 points of Kadikoy. The aim is to provide multi aspects to the program of the architectural element which is going to be made.

The density charts that was produced regarding to the recordings in 11 different points, the timeline of the site according to its peak and low density ours was revealed. This data was used in the distribution of 4 different functions remarked as the project goals.

A visual topography which includes 24 hours of transposed sound data was created. According to this circular topography the relations

The 4 main functional goal of the project was distributed through time and space around the specified site based on the circular density chart of nearby spaces. While the surrounding was highly densed, the designed building will remain calm in terms of activity. Besides, while the surrounding was inactive and silent, the building will function as a generator of liveliness and movement. This duality

ound was represented as rhythms and it is presented by the recordings. A 24 hours of programatic distribution of density was revealed after the recordings were proccesed. This revealed data will proceed the project to determine the program of the building according to the density of KadÄąkĂśy. The aim is to determine the program of the building and to create an urban life out of it, by distributing the urban activities into a some kind of time-table, which will feeded by the sound datas.

any narrow and wide street-like gaps are explaining the kind-of-public areas that were created around the building. A topography was created depending on the sound analysis made before. The topography was creating semi-public areas in itself. Which will produce in-situ publis happenings, hopefully. Many parts of this artificial topography will be a public focus and become a place for gathering and meeting. The area was an abondoned carpark before, therefore, turning this place into a public area generate its own habitat eventually. Between the Kadikรถy settelment and the sea, the project area will create balanced publicity and a potencial of unintendent crossovers.

W

ith the artificial topography, the effects of the area which was observed by the sound recordings and visualisation of the recordings, will be easier to estimate and foresee. The aim is to create a situation which will rise and fall with the habits of the current habitat of the urban land. The projects will try to implement into the current pedestrian flows and car actions inside the site and will try to convert them from inside.

PThe current situation of the project area has the capacity of having 700 cars inside. The proposal gives almost the same amount of car park areas inside the area.

The program of the building was proposed as to work along-side with the function of car park. At night, the proposal asks to use the car park as its own program. The polars of culture and carpark will be together in this proposal as an experimental programatic approach.

TITLE Habitat | A Pilot Settlement, Containing and Computing Every Possible Cluster Of An Urban Land [2013 | Architectural Studio 7 | 4th Year]

AWARD ARCHED Architectural Projects Competition [2014] 1st Prize

COORDINATOR Deniz Aslan ABSTRACT The statement of the project was based on the theory that; Istanbul’s largest airport will be out of function in a projected future, yet urge of an urban mega-project will occure in the following years. The area of this urgent design must focus on the giant landing fields of the airport. The landing fields were divided to relevant plots so that each designer gets one. Then de process begun. In the plot no:24, “Habitat” was created. Habitat, is a pilot settlement, containing every possible cluster of an urban land. This area will function as an ordinary urban settlement with its residential, commercial, socio-cultural and recreational areas. The other face of the settlement will contain research and development laboratories. Which will use this pilot area as an experience field. The buildings for science departments spontaneously gather data from every kind of equipment and process it. This processing period will lead the researchs further. As a fact, developments focused on urban life will be revealed. Like a feedback mechanism, this developments will turn back to the pilot settlement area to be tested. HABITAT project was developed in a land which has the dimensions of 100 meters to 600 meters with a limited contact with people and a slope of 3%. This inhumanized land should be turned into a living habitat, as the project brief says.

A

s Habitat will function as an urban life prototipe, multiple spaces were left for open public recreational areas to feed the urban life as generators. Most of these areas were left as “meadows�.

The tesselated volumes under the buildings were designed as to function as public areas under each block. Also, the cores, which will be used as transformators of data will be connected physically and computationally to these bases. These cores will provide all kind of research data to the research center.These cores were defined as the peak points of these tesselated artificial topograhies.

The cores which were defined as peaks of the artificial topography, are connected with the housing units, which will provide all kinds of relevant data about urban life, technology, ecology and socio-economics, to the research centers.

TITLE Open University | An Experimental University Practice With Its Own Mechanism [2013 | Architectural Studio 6 | 4th Year]

COORDINATOR Arzu Erdem | Ertug Uçar ABSTRACT Today, the context of a university is expanded. Terms like, “lecture”, “tutor”, “student” and “class” are standing for more extensive meanings. As a happening, this type of approaches occured in many cities of many countries. Is it possible to form a network of [Open]Universities with the means of architecture? The project is grounding on the answers to this question. The term open refers to “open-door” policy of the system. It is both physically and virtually accessible for every stratum* of the community. The syllabus and the cirriculum of the education is flexible and ambiguous. In fact, we cannot call this an education system in today’s conjuctural know-hows. The beliefs of open-source knowledge and free-flow of the public intervention are the focal points. *Stratum [n.] [from latin; stratum “a spread for a bed, coverlet, blanket.] a level or class to which people are assigned according to their social status, education, or income. [ex: members of other social strata.]

he first “Open University” experience occured in United Kingdom, with the same name, “The Open University. It has a formal organisational structure with a very defined educational methods. The motto of the general approach is to use this experience in UK to create a more flexible, more accessible, less defined and less formal structure.

he core theoretical aspect of the “Open University” idea is to reveal both spatial and socio-economical borders of the city and be a negotiator between two sides of these fictional borders.

In that case, a couple of cognitive and quantitative researchs and experiments was made which were told in the previous parts of the project. These researchs and experiments can be listed as; “a congestion mapping” and

These two studies had given us two different ”topographies” as a product. And the overlapping parts of these topographies had given us the actual areas that the idea of “Open University” should focus on. [The details of this process was explained in previous parts.]

ictional lines drawn in both directions in each 150 meters and occasionaly a grid was created. This grid has been used to create equally selected points for a research. The research is about the rental values of real estates. This issue was selected as a parameter because the most important difference between these stratums are economical capibilities. So, on each intersection of the grid, 2 residential and 1 commercial real estate advertisement from selected websites were investigated. [The real estate ads were search by the nearest street addresses.] The overall of the rents are calculated. 381 real estate rental costs from 127 points were used. The overall of 3 values for each point was calculated. Then a vertical line was drawn to each point which the elevation values of each line was the same with the overall of 3 rental costs. The lines create an equalizer-like look. Finally, the lines were connected to each other with a horizontal line (connecting the top points of the lines), and the a topography of “rental costs-based stratification”. After gathering the quantitative data from real estate websites and assinging them to the right points on the grid, we are able to create a new topography of “Economical Values” of the site. This aspect is able to show us the peaks and valleys that occur because of the axes crossing throught the site. [which are creating the actual stratums eventually]

These 4 main areas are the very first in the priority order. To bind these differencies, the proposals must be work like an osmos process. They will create a hole between stratums and let them flow into each other.

ABSTRACT The Dalaman district is one of the most popular touristical districts in Turkey. The rapid growth in touristical facilities were both a potantial, and a treat to the current build and natural environment. The proposal of re-development of Dalaman took its roots from these main issues which were generic all over the country. The proposal suggests that, a “new”, in-situ ecological and wise approach will create benefit to the land and people. So, in order to generate innovative proposals, I seek to deploy my architectural education as a tool of perceiving the issues from the think/design perspective, by investigating the existing changes in the city, concentrating on the production of models and visualizations for future cities and possible directions of urban futures.

T

he current facts about Dalaman is that, it is known for its international airport which serves as a gateway to the tourists who visit this part of Turkey every year, heading especially to seaside resorts to the west and east of Dalaman such as Marmaris, Fethiye, Köyceğiz, Dalyan, Ölüdeniz and Hisarönü.

The re-development project of Dalaman took its bases from its roots. The current urbanisation pattern of Dalaman was deeply analysed as the foundation of the project. Physical environment, build environment,

planting

routines, soild structure, wind analysis and slope analysis take highly important parts of the planning of the “new” Dalaman.

The very first study was on the regional relations of Dalaman with surrounding settlements. Dalaman distrist was one of the cores of Mediterrenian Tourism Areas.

With a unique combination of pleasant climate, beautiful coastline, rich history and diverse culture the Mediterranean region including Dalaman

Tourism is one of the most important sources of income for Dalaman. It also supports small communities in coastal areas and islands by providing alternative sources of income far from urban centres. However, tourism has also played major role in the degradation of the coastal and marine environment. Rapid development has been encouraged by Turkish Government to support the large numbers of tourists visiting the region each year. But this has caused serious disturbance to marine habitats such as erosion and pollution in many places along the coasts of Dalaman.

Thats why, the project focused on the preservation of natural and physical resourses in Dalaman. These resourses include human resourses, like agricultural benefits, and natural resourses like citrus fruits. The general approach is the preservation and extention NARLI

TEAM Gokhan Avcioglu | Mustafa Kemal Kayis | Alican Inal Martina La Vista | Anastasiia Oksiukovska ABSTRACT My experiences at GAD [Global Architectural Development] was most significantly beneficial in terms of involving into design processes from concept design to budget planning. There were 2 major urban design projects that I mostly involved with. In both projects, I worked with an international design team of architects and urban designers. The first was a 180.000 m2 mixed-use development area in Pendik, a neighbourhood in the outer shell of greater Istanbul district. My first major role in the design process was to computationally allocate volumes inside the development area according to the council regulations. I used my parametric design capabilities (Grasshopper) to generate different variations of volumetric designs. Afterwards, I involved into the surveying process by generating maps, data visualisations and brief booklets. The process followed with public space designs and facade designs for the volumes, which I took part in both processes within a major role and responsibility.

ABSTRACT “There is no such thing as an empty space or an empty time. There is always something to see, something to hear. In fact, try as we may to make a silence, we cannot.” [John Cage] The artificial pier area which is in the intersection point between The Kadiköy Dockland and recreation strip was expected to be function as a “Performance Space and Mediateque”. Alternative methods were investigated and developed to form a foundation for the relations between the functions and the urban area. Is it possible to create a “cause and effect” context based on the activity flow of the city? By revealing the increasing and decreasing activity shift of the city, it is possible. “Sound” can be a major source for diagnosing this activity shift. “Sound” is a transposed type of a data that includes every kind of activity parameter in itself.

TEAM Alican Inal | Idil S. Yucel Inal | Derya Uzal | Beril Sarisakal | Egemen Nardereli ABSTRACT Pamukkale University, Architecture and Design Faculty project was a national competition entry. The project was a 20.000 m2 educational facility including a courtyard, an open carpark and open-space production areas. The core idea behind the design was to have full and semi floors where full floor plates will be used as management and tutor rooms while semi floor plates will be used as high ceiling studios. The studios designed to perform as an open plan form, while having the ability to partial isolation with built-in curtains. Also, the rotation of the building was designated to be aligned with the mountain view. Thus, the view of the studio spaces is a wide panorama of this breath taking mountain view.

ABSTRACT Alkan House was a novel opportunity to express a contemporary approach towards housing in Western Turkey. The significance about the Alkan House is that, it is split into two, whereas the schism happens right after the entrance. One side is the living volume, which consist of the kitchen and the reception space. The other part is the bedrooms and storages. While the separation of the functions through the building is significantly aiming a new type of life style, yet still, the traditional existences also moves on and varies occasionally. The project is in construction phase at the moment.

ABSTRACT We believe in new ways of doing architecture beyond the conventional and we don’t hold back from experimenting with different methods while doing our projects. At all times, we are seeking an architecture with “all” as our name suggests. As opposed to one-size-fits-all approaches of the conventional, we are in favor of adaptive processes that generate different explanations to ever-changing conditions. We are also aware of the preconceptions around the term “participation”. Rather than taking existing methods for granted, we are exploring different tools and mechanisms to re-invent our own technique in each project. Against the hegemony of architecture, we are guarding for the collective nature. As we continue to believe that small-scale interventions can do big impact, we now experience them with our projects. We have supported the struggle of people in a remote village without a public telephone line for building a new school in order to prevent sending their kids to even further villages for education.

W

e have been faced with the reckless and destructive behavior of the city government towards one of the last existing green parks in Istanbul but never have just said, “We are against it”. Rather, we have invited everyone to experience the park and make up their own minds.

We have literally lived in that park, tried to listen everyone who lived there and make them visible. We have never tried to come up with remote solutions for remote places from our 14 m2 office in Kadikoy.

Instead, we believe in the power of seeing, living, exploring and experimenting collectively in situ.Herkes Icin Mimarlik doesn’t only consist of architects and architecture students.

It is multidisciplinary platform that is growing rapidly as new members and volunteers join from different backgrounds like sociology, psychology, engineering, pedagogy etc.

We are hoping to leverage this network for YAP Istanbul Modern project through an open participatory process, in which everyone can contribute and we continue learning from every new stage of it.

We have started this process by bringing together our proposal and we are hoping to develop it throughout the project. We think that Istanbul Modern doesn’t have strong ties with everyday life of the city and this issue creates a disconnect between Istanbul Modern and its environment.

While it is questionable that how public its open spaces are, we are keen to explore the notion of “shared space” as it is mentioned in the invitation letter and focus on similar aspects to broaden our discussion.

W

e are willing to expand on the concepts of program and organization and we aim to bring together collective doing with our continual exploration of sustainability, recycling and reuse.

In this process, the final physical output will be as important as the other stages of the operation. In the end, perhaps there won’t be a single product but continuous efforts throughout the process to bring together a collective.

And the process will not have an expiration date as it leaves a space for further participation and development. Since we prefer seeing by exploration over speculation without experimentation, we cannot really predict what we are going to experience.

But one thing we know is our presence in this project will give us the chance to invite different actors to experience and shape this process collectively. Section: Professional Works
