ABSTRACT
abstract
Cosmic proliferation ‘Cosmic Proliferation’ is a portrayal of coexisting universes and alternate realities, showing an infinite of possibilities. In ‘Cosmic Proliferation ’, different motifs come together to create a visual representation of varying matter, forms, densities and gravities in the same space. In relation to key concepts of Quantum theory, the illustrations represent warped time, matter and space and states of superposition. By combining illustration and scaled pattern, ‘Cosmic Proliferation ’ explores objects at the smallest scales of energy levels of atoms and subatomic particles.

RESEARCH
research quantum theory Amongst the many concepts that quantum theory displayed, some of them which I identified were quantum mechanics, quantum entanglement and superposition. Quantum mechanics: Quantum mechanics is the body of scientific laws that describe the wacky behaviour of photons, electrons and the other particles that make up the universe. It also describes the forces of nature at the smallest scales. Quantum entanglement: Quantum entanglement is a physical phenomenon which occurs when pairs or groups of particles are generated, interact, or share spatial proximity in ways such that the quantum state of each particle cannot be described independently of the state of the other, even when the particles are separated by a large distance. Superposition: Quantum superposition is a fundamental principle of quantum mechanics. It states that, much like waves in classical physics, any two (or more) quantum states can be added together (“superposed”) and the result will be another valid quantum state; and conversely, that every quantum state can be represented as a sum of two or more other distinct states. - being in different states at once - being at more than one place at the same time

RESEARCH
research the multiverse For this concept, I focused on superposition and entanglement as I feel that these concept epitomizes the quantum theory. The multiverse is a hypothetical group of multiple universes including the universe in which we live. There are five plausible scientific theories suggesting we live in a multiverse: 1. Infinite Universes In a way, a multitude of universes exists next to each other in a giant patchwork quilt of universes. [Visualizations of Infinity: A Gallery] 2. Bubble Universes In some of these bubble universes, the laws of physics and fundamental constants might be different than in ours, making some universes strange places indeed. 3. Parallel Universes Another idea that arises from string theory is the notion of “braneworlds” — parallel universes that hover just out of reach of our own. 4. Daughter Universes The theory of quantum mechanics, which reigns over the tiny world of subatomic particles, suggests another way multiple universes might arise. Quantum mechanics describes the world in terms of probabilities, rather than definite outcomes. And the mathematics of this theory might suggest that all possible outcomes of a situation do occur — in their own separate universes. For example, if you reach a crossroads where you can go right or left, the present universe gives rise to two daughter universes: one in which you go right, and one in which you go left. 5. Mathematical Universes Scientists have debated whether mathematics is simply a useful tool for describing the universe, or whether math itself is the fundamental reality, and our observations of the universe are just imperfect perceptions of its true mathematical nature. If the latter is the case, then perhaps the particular mathematical structure that makes up our universe isn’t the only option, and in fact all possible mathematical structures exist as their own separate universes. CONCEPT
concept the multiverse Quantum superposition and the multiverse The multiverse is a hypothetical group of multiple universes including the universe in which we live. Together, these universes comprise everything that exists: the entirety of space, time, matter, energy, and the physical laws and constants that describe them. Every time you make a choice, you spawn a multitude of universes, leading to umpteen other yous – some of them living very different lives.

Concept: to explore the possibilities of the multiverse / probabilities of existing in several states at once. This concept led to inspire “Cosmic proliferation”, where I would like to portray a chaotic yet harmonious mix of everything that exists - mainly space, time, energy matter and gravity. In my pattern compositions, theses motifs and elements shows proliferation as they grow and multiply.

ORI TOOR
With playful and futuristic elements, Toor’s quirky works portrays impossible landscapeswith warped elements. Similarly, my concept looks into how different state of matter and forms can come together in the same space.

Known for his impeccable tessellations and metamorphic pattern, Escher’s works inspired my concept as there is a resemblence in its infinite pattern and how the elements are weaved together seamlessly. Particles and atoms, visually, have their own specific pattern and thus, I would like to create a seamless pattern in “Cosmic Proliferation” that represents atoms and particles transiting to their smallest scales.

Initial sketches In these motif sketches, I drew a variation of forms which represents the different densities, matter and gravities in space. By using both organic shapes and isometrical shapes, it creates a harmony of shapes with depth and dimension. 9

FINAL MOTIFS
final motifs THE MIRROR OF UNIVERSE Drawing inspiration from the concept of superposition from quantum theory, quantum states are interconnected and correlated. The Mirror of universe illustrates a single unit in a multiverse.
TEMPORAL ENTANGLEMENT Time entanglement is how two photons can be entangled in multiple ways, including through their energies and emission times.
CHANGE IN STATES OF MATTER Solid, liquid and gas are different states of matter. In a parallel universe, properties and states of matter do not work the same way.

FINAL MOTIFS
CHANGE IN SHAPES & FORMS
Inspired by quantum theory’s exploration in objects at the smallest scales of energy levels (of atoms and subatomic particles), these are atoms, visualised in different forms.
THE GRAVITON The entity represents graviton, the hypothetical quantum of gravity. It is an elementary particle that mediates the force of gravity. In string theory, believed to be a consistent theory of quantum gravity, the graviton is a massless state of a fundamental string.
