EDITORIAL Dear Members, Partners and Friends, This year, writing the introduction for the Activity Report holds particular significance for me, as it marks the culmination of my 14-year tenure at the IMZ. This document serves as a transition point, marking the conclusion of my responsibilities as I prepare to pass the baton to my deputy, colleague and successor, Max Beckham-Ortner, effective 1 January 2024.

It was always of great importance for me to be in close exchange with you, our members and partners, in the international music + dance film ecosystem, to understand your needs with which we could develop relevant offers + support for our specialised branch. Exceptional situations, such as the last few years, have shown just how vital a strong network of trust is.

Thinking outside of the box and learning from one another were two of my aims, in order to find sustainable, innovative solutions and to anticipate and actively address future developments. I am very grateful for the cooperation with like-minded partners, supporters, and sponsors who helped so much in shaping the further development of the IMZ. My personal thanks go to my incredible colleagues in the IMZ Team, who regularly made the impossible possible through their joint efforts under all circumstances. Additionally, the cooperation with my colleagues from the Directorate, the Board and the members was characterised by great trust in our work and continuous committed support, which I have always greatly appreciated and of which I am very proud!

My time at the IMZ was driven by a passion for music + media, creativity and innovation, as well as trust, continuity and friendship, for which I am extremely thankful.

My warmest wishes for success, Katharina Dear Members and Friends, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Katharina for her wonderful and impressive efforts as Secretary General of the IMZ. She has developed the organisation to become an important player in the European cultural media world, and today the IMZ is stronger than ever. In addition to being an excellent leader, Katharina has charmed us all with her engagement, smile and laughter!

Katharina will be missed, but luckily, we have a brilliant successor in Max Beckham-Ortner, a person with exactly the right calibre for the role. Max has been with the IMZ for 3 years first as project manager, then as Deputy Secretary General. He is a very experienced music and media expert with the best contacts in the international and Austrian culture + media world and above all with comprehensive industry knowledge.

Based in Vienna, the IMZ International Music + Media Centre was founded under the aegis of UNESCO in 1961 to preserve the performing arts as a cultural asset. Our mission is to promote performing arts in and through audiovisual media, thereby exciting and engaging audiences for music + dance. Our activities are based on four pillars: MARKET ACCESS + NETWORK As an international business network with more than 150 member organisations, we connect creators in the performing arts – the world’s renowned stages, dance companies, operas and concert houses – with the audiovisual sector: film + TV production, distribution, public + private broadcasting and streaming + VOD platforms. Regular industry gatherings + B2B events not only enhance the quality + reach of our network but also serve as a marketplace for music + dance films.

PROFESSIONALISATION To ensure a sustainable future for this specialised industry, the IMZ spearheads numerous learning + development opportunities. By disseminating information on current trends, providing crucial resources, encouraging knowledge transfer of industry-specific skills, nurturing new talent and offering pitching opportunities, the IMZ acts as a strong interest group for the sector.

AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT The dissemination of cultural content through audiovisual media offers enormous potential for reaching new audiences. To build on this, the IMZ curates and compiles Music Film Festivals worldwide, as their convivial atmosphere and free admission lower thresholds for attendance. Audience development is therefore a crucial part of the IMZ’s mission.

INNOVATION + NEW BUSINESS MODELS Innovation and advancement are deeply embedded in all of the IMZ’s activities. In addition to showcasing pioneering technologies for the arts and initiating work groups on new approaches + solutions for our industry, we have, together with our members, developed Content.Agent, a search engine + digital B2B platform that creates a single global marketplace for film license trading. The IMZ + its members are thereby advancing the IMZ Standards on Metadata + Copyright for the film industry.

HONOURING EXCELLENCE Over its 62-year history, the IMZ has diligently supported classical music and performing arts films, championing every facet of the industry and its triumphs. To a great extent, they owe their significance to the exceptional individuals who enrich the community with their brilliance and passion. Thus, we proudly award IMZ Honorary Memberships to some of the finest talents in their respective domains. This year, we are delighted to welcome two more distinguished individuals to our esteemed roster: ANNE-SOPHIE MUTTER The acclaimed violinist has left an indelible mark on the audiovisual film industry. Her involvement in music and media as well as her engagement for the next generation and education has made her a pivotal figure in the performing arts media world. Her consistent presence at industry events has allowed audiences to trace her illustrious career through the films showcased. Collaborating with numerous IMZ Members, from her early performances with Herbert von Karajan to her recent work with John Williams, Anne-Sophie Mutter has become an integral part of the IMZ Community.

DANIEL HOPE An exceptional violinist from a young age, Daniel Hope has made a remarkable contribution to the audiovisual film industry through his unwavering commitment to bringing music + art closer to people. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a profound understanding of the transformative potential of media to create meaningful connections between music and the masses. His collaborations with various IMZ Members have solidified his role as a cherished and valued member of the IMZ Community. One of the most vivid examples of his creative spirit is evident in the “Hope@ Home” concerts in collaboration with ARTE. When the world faced silence and uncertainty, Daniel opened the doors to his home, using music to provide solace and hope to countless individuals.

Avant Première, our flagship event, stands as the prime trade fare for cultural TV content and performing arts in audiovisual media. A marketplace, conference, exhibition, and networking gathering, the 2023 edition was held again in the vibrant city of Berlin from 18-22 February, coinciding with the EFM and the Berlinale. Drawing in a diverse group of 600 participants from 40 different countries, Avant Première served as a business hub for distributors, broadcasters, streaming platforms, producers, and artists, shaping the present and future of the industry.

AVANT PREMIÈRE SCREENINGS The Avant Première Screenings were the centerpiece of the event, offering the opportunity to see the latest music + dance content – before it premieres! 580 films from over 60 organisations attracted the attention of buyers, producers, distributors, potential partners and financiers, driving businesses and enabling numerous productions to make it to market.

Furthermore, audiences were treated to an array of Market + Special Screenings that illuminate the world of music and dance on screen with stars and glamour.

FULL CONFERENCE PROGRAMME A vibrant party hosted by ARTE kicked off an enlightening edition of Avant Première, followed by an inspiring key note from the renowned conductor Alondra de la Parra.

Collaborating with Sunny Side of the Doc once more, the joint Pitching Sessions gave a preview of what’s new + soon to come on the market. Delving into the industry’s burning topics during Innovation Day, attendees had the chance to witness examples of how technology can enhance music + art. AI brilliantly complemented Robbie Williams, as MIT

presented an augmented opera before its premiere in Bayreuth. Furthermore, CCI Thrives showcased innovative data-sharing solutions, and panel discussions explored the dynamic relationship between branding and diversification + opportunities and challenges of digital performances.

The Avant Première Talks focused on Russian war in the Ukraine and its effects on the performing arts and audiovisual sector. Speaking on the importance of truth over symbolism was Oksana Lyniv with Shila Behjat, Oksana Taranenko exchanged thoughts on music in exile with Daniel Hope, and Natalie Movshovych gave a personal account of working while at war in conversation with Katrin Sandmann.

In addition, Special Presentations unveiled much of the things to come in our industry.

Showcasing promising projects and prospects, such as tanz:digital, OnAir, LaScalaTV, FISAplus, and Cinnovate, the Special Presentations made a strong impact.

BUILDING BRIDGES WITHIN THE INDUSTRY Reuniting in Berlin, the industry came together, shared ideas, plans and agreements. In special appreciation, we would like to mention the extensive partnership with the European Film Market, adding to the value of the Avant Première with screenings and content collaboration. Additionally, 19 industry experts offered guidance and shared insights in over 198 individual meetings, connecting the industry even further.

In 2023, the IMZ renewed its partnership with Sunny Side of the Doc for its 35th edition. Positioned at a central umbrella stand, we featured several of our esteemed members, showcased our extensive network, and, build stronger connections within the global audiovisual community.

PITCHES + WINNERS To promote arts + culture film + our network to different players of the Sunny Side of the Doc festival, the IMZ presented the award for

the “Arts & Culture Pitch”. It fills the IMZ and its members with a special kind of appreciation for the quality of its network, by congratulating IMZ Member Maria Willer from 3B-Produktion for winning this year’s award.

We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the distinguished jurors, namely Philippe U. del Drago, Marion Camus Oberdorfer, and Silvia De Felice for their invaluable contribution.

This engaging session was moderated by Matthew Trustram (EBU) + Katharina Jeschke (IMZ), and featured international experts in music and media, including Arild Erikstad, Jason Charters, Laetitia Huberti + Tanja van der Goes.

The last three winners of the FEDORA Digital Prize had a reunion in Prague, and shared their ACTIVITY REPORT 2023

experiences during an inspiring conversation with Peter Maniura.

The pinnacle of the event was the Golden Prague Festival Awards, where many IMZ Members claimed the honours. The IMZ once again joined the EBU in presenting the remarkable talents of composer Mikael Karlsson and dance performer + choreographer Alexander Ekman with the 2023 EBU-IMZ Outstanding Achievement Award! It was a special privilege to honour not only the combined genius of the artists, but also their individual contributions and exceptional works of expressing the depth up to the fringes of human experience.

BACH 2 FUTURE The two-day meeting, Bach 2 Future 2023 — DisPLAY Classical, hosted by the IMZ Member Papageno and the Hungarian Music Council, took place for the 5th time on 6 + 7 June. In partnership with IMZ, Jeunesses Musicales International, International Classical Music Awards and Creative Europe Desk Hungary, the conference was centered around new developments of audiovisual content, the refreshing ideas of young professionals, the future of online blogs, print magazines + radio stations, and the importance of the European cultural networks. In the canon of this setting Max Beckham-Ortner (IMZ) and Frank Schulleri (Content.Agent) spoke at the “New tools for timeless music” panel.

CIMIX 2023 CIMIx, the first global matchmaking and conference event that brings together the creative economy, business and industry, explored global business opportunities, the advantages of Austria as a production location and future-readiness for the audiovisual industry. The IMZ was actively involved in the arrangement of a Networking Session, and hosted the panel discussion “Audiovisual Music Content on Demand” with Thierry Baujard, Frank Gerdes, Bernhard Kiehas and Albert Malli, moderated

ICMA On 18 January, the International Classical Music Awards announced the 26 winners of their 2023 edition! Selected from 391 submissions, the winners came from 14 different labels and featured several aspiring talents.

Our dedication to this mission has driven us to introduce initiatives like Content.Agent, a pioneering B2B marketplace for film license trading. Building on the input from many IMZ Members, Content.Agent is a single, full solution platform that allows buyers, owners and distributors to find, negotiate, sell and acquire film licences worldwide.

Having been tested thoroughly during the past year, the marketplace feature of Content.

Agent is set to launch at Avant Première 2024; sellers will be able to manage their catalogues and licenses and publish their titles on the Content.Agent marketplace. Buyers can uti-

lise intuitive tools to search content and compile purchasing lists according to their needs.

The solution leverages minimum requirements for metadata to effectively categorise content and employs the ISCC Content ID, a one-of-akind identifier for media files. A digital license ledger secures transparent and tamper-free license and copyright records.

In 2023, Content.Agent was presented to the film and tech industry in Europe at multiple events such as CIMIx, Bach 2 Future, Karajan Music Tech, Venice Production Bridge + Frankfurter Buchmesse.

CCI THRIVE PRESENTATION AT AVANT PREMIÈRE 21 February 2023 Berlin, Germany

A successor project of Digital Cross Over (2019-2021), CCI Thrive is a cross-sectoral, multidisciplinary project that uses a data-driven approach to increase the competitiveness of the creative and cultural sectors by inspiring innovative new business models, boosting revenue and fostering better insight into audience preferences.

This year was filled with multiple workshops and open discussions. The Berlin workshop in February 2023 saw the CCI Thrive project first present their findings at Avant Première, with the goal to attract contributors from the performing arts film sector. In May, another workshop took place in Florence, hosted by Centrica. There, CCI Thrive took a significant step towards establishing practicable and sustainable business cases for the creative ACTIVITY REPORT 2023

culture industry. Over the course of two days, CCI Thrive’s brain trust unified its previous business models to be applied in a single, representative demonstrator. The third workshop took place in Linz in September at the Ars Electronica Festival. It showcased the newly developed demonstrator “CCEyes”, while also holding an open discussion to share insights with the attendees.

Co-funded by the Creative Europe Media programme and the EU, CCI Thrive is set to run until 2024 and is coordinated by the BGZ Berliner Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit, with partner organisations in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Italy and France; the IMZ is proud to count itself among them and is thankful for the enriching partnership and collaboration!

guidance, participants got the chance to direct a live concert recording, working closely with the prestigious Gulbenkian Orchestra and utilising their state-of-the-art equipment and control room. All participants, where guided to learn best practices in visualising, scripting and directing large-scale orchestral performances, camera scripting, framing shots, developing sequences, understanding musical narrative and effective placement of cameras.

In the ever-evolving world of music and dance film collaboration, innovation + creative expression are integral to the industry’s growth and success. For this reason, the IMZ holds pitching sessions together with Sunny Side of the Doc, to foster the industry’s creativity and attract funding. Two collaborative pitching sessions in Berlin, “Digital Creation” and “Performance Arts Documentary”, and “Arts & Culture” in La Rochelle, brought a lot of attention to exciting projects and teams.

In addition, Avant Première 2023 and Sunny Side of the Doc also enabled a number of expert sessions, where experts from the music and dance film industry shared their insights and knowledge. These sessions have given invaluable insight into the industry, filled with tailored feedback and possible funding and

partnership opportunities.

PANELS + DISCUSSIONS Creating, organising and attending many engaging panel discussions throughout 2023, the IMZ actively contributes to sharing expertise and nurture interested minds in the industry. Among many highlights were discussing audiovisual music content on demand at CIMIx, talking about the opportunities of digital transformation for cultural + creative industries at Frankfurter Buchmesse, introducing CCI Thrive at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, and jointly hosting the EBU-IMZ panel discussion at Golden Prague ITF.
