At the start of the year, we honoured the legacy of our outgoing President and Secretary General, whose leadership laid a strong foundation for the IMZ’s growth. Now, as we look toward 2025, we remain committed to paving the way for the future of the audiovisual performing arts industry. Our focus lies in empowering young artists, advancing data collection and evaluation, and fostering stronger connections between institutions and media. By addressing challenges with dedication and resourcefulness, we aim to embrace opportunities that propel our network forward.
Prioritising support for our members through digital transformation, our longstanding partnership with FEDORA Platform’s Next Stage has allowed us to deliver vital digital training, equipping cultural organisations to meet evolving demands. In 2024, we also launched the Professionalisation Group, a think tank designed to strengthen and revolutionise our IMZ Academy and professional development initiatives, consolidating expertise and refining our approach to industry advancement.
We were also excited to see Content.Agent provide the platform for the Avant Première Online Catalogue for the very first time – a significant step on the platform’s path to market launch. In addition, our collaborative efforts with inspiring partners across the EU of the past years has culminated in the launch of the
Warm regards,

CCEyes Platform – a cultural and creative data hub that facilitates data-sharing across CCI industries.
We’ve engaged in many discussions around innovation in the arts, including AI’s potential for performing arts at Karajan Music Tech + Innovation Day, and provided perspectives on representation + diversity in music. We participated in events like Bach2Future, Classical:NEXT and Sunny Side of the Doc, bestowed the EBU-IMZ Outstanding Achievement Award to filmmaker Larry Weinstein at Golden Prague ITF and provided our expertise to juries and international competitions.
As a network, we took a stand in advocating for the preservation of vital spaces for cultural expression, particularly in opposing the merger of 3sat with ARTE. We are committed to the importance of accessible, diverse cultural programming, and take pride in amplifying artists’ voices across Europe in this critical dialogue. A vital initiative in providing public access to the arts, our 2024 summer Music Film Festivals once again travelled internationally while remaining a staple in Vienna’s cultural landscape.
Your trust and support motivate us every day, and we look forward to continuing this journey together, building on our rich history while welcoming new ideas and approaches.

Based in Vienna, the IMZ International Music + Media Centre was founded under the aegis of UNESCO in 1961 to preserve the performing arts as a cultural asset. Our mission is to promote performing arts in and through audiovisual media, thereby exciting and engaging audiences for music + dance. Our activities are based around these four pillars:
As an international business network with more than 150 member organisations, we connect creators in the performing arts – the world’s renowned stages, dance companies, operas and concert houses – with the audiovisual sector: film + TV production, distribution, public + private broadcasting and streaming + VOD platforms. Regular industry gatherings and B2B events not only enhance the quality + reach of the network but also serve as a marketplace for music + dance films.
To ensure a sustainable future for this specialised industry, the IMZ spearheads numerous learning + development opportunities. By disseminating information on current trends, providing crucial resources, encouraging knowledge transfer of industry-specific skills, nurturing new talent and offering pitching opportunities, the IMZ acts as a strong interest group for the sector.
The distribution of cultural content through audiovisual media offers enormous potential for reaching new audiences. To build on this, the IMZ curates and compiles Music Film Festivals worldwide, as their convivial atmosphere and free admission lower thresholds for attendance. Audience development is therefore a crucial part of the IMZ’s mission.
The IMZ has been the trusted interest group for a constantly evolving industry, hence innovation and staying on the pulse of time are deeply embedded in all of the IMZ’s activities. Besides showcasing pioneering technologies and initiating work groups on new approaches + solutions for the industry, we’ve also created Content.Agent, a search engine + digital B2B platform that creates a single global marketplace for film license trading. The IMZ + its members are thereby advancing our own IMZ Standards on Metadata + Copyright for the film industry.
The IMZ is the largest global platform for the cultural film and TV industry, a proactive and versatile network of more than 150 member companies and organisations in more than 30 countries. An industry hub and primary source of information, we provide customised business opportunities for anyone active at the intersection of performing arts and media: leading film production and distribution companies, public + private broadcasters, VOD + streaming platforms, opera houses, orchestras, concert halls, record labels, programme editors, dance companies and artists.
The IMZ is your shortcut to crucial information, valuable business opportunities and promising matchmaking in the cultural film industry.

This year, the IMZ Team has worked closely to deliver impactful projects that advanced our mission, navigated challenges and achieved shared goals that continue to support the global music and media community.
As we reflect on the achievements of the past year, we want to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of three of our longest-serving, outgoing teammates: Claudia Kruzik, Sophie Schneider, and Christian von der Recke. Each of them has moved on to exciting new personal and professional chapters. Always generous with their time and expertise, they were instrumental in shaping Avant Première, the IMZ Academy as well as Content.Agent. We could not have asked for more dedicated colleagues.
At Avant Première 2024, the IMZ Team has gathered to pay tribute to the remarkable contributions of our former Secretary General, Katharina Jeschke and President, Arild Erikstad.
Their dedication and vision have left an ongoing legacy and we are grateful for the impact they have had on the IMZ and the wider industry.
The farewell ceremony was a heartfelt celebration, graced by inspiring performances from renowned violinists Vilde Frang and Aleksey Igudesman, Austrian actor Cornelius Obonya, as well as longtime friends, colleagues and industry luminaries Daniel Serafin and Ulrike Köstinger.

Our flagship event, Avant Première, returned to Berlin for another outstanding edition, further cementing its status as a leading event in the cultural film sector. Bringing together decision-makers from major public + private broadcasters, streaming + VOD platforms, distribution + film production companies, performing arts institutions and enthusiasts, Avant Première attracts attendees from over 30 countries to do business and explore the latest trends shaping the audiovisual cultural landscape.
The Avant Première Screenings were the heart of the programme. They offered interested audiences a glimpse into close to 600 productions - before their premiere - spanning the world of classical music, opera, contemporary dance and documentaries. They have gained well over 1,000 views, driving business and enabling numerous productions to make it to market.
Programme formats are designed to address the burning issues surrounding our industry head on and to meet its information and development needs. As a yearly focal point on new technologies and imaginative approaches in art film production, the Innovation Day explored AI’s growing role in cultural production and distribution, in particular addressing issues related to copyright, documentary filmmaking as well as the future of content distribution through FAST channels. Furthermore, the new data-sharing platform created as part of the EU-supported CCI Thrive project was unveiled. The highly-anticipated Pitching Sessions, co-hosted with Sunny Side of the Doc, offered a platform for fresh voices and up-and-coming filmmakers in the realm of arts documentaries and digital creation. Special
Presentations delved into audience development strategies for streaming platforms and introduced cutting-edge 8K live streaming technologies.
To strengthen the global performing arts + media community, Avant Première provided ample opportunities for networking and business promotion. Formats included the popular One-On-One Meeting Sessions with major buyers from television and streaming and with the movers + shakers of the creative industry, as well as receptions and informal gatherings during celebrations such as the Kickoff Party together with ARTE. The Booth Area promoted the latest productions on the spot. Last but not least, a continued collaboration with EFM enabled participants to screen there at a special price, attended by 11,000 visitors and 1,500 buyers.
The event was a resounding success, offering participants the chance to experience the richness and diversity of music and dance. Star guests such as ground-breaking director Jonas Åkerlund, fado chanteuse extraordinaire Gisela João, dancers Sasha Waltz and Damien Jalet and EBU-IMZ Outstanding Achievement Award co-winner Mikael Karlsson and many more attended the programmes for exclusive Q&A sessions. The grand finale to the event saw star violinist Vilde Frang and actor Cornelius Obonya join Aleksey Igudesman, Daniel Serafin and Ulrike Köstinger in a heartfelt farewell performance to the former IMZ leadership.
Thank you to our many partners, experts, participants and everyone who made this year’s edition a resounding success!

Sunny Side of the Doc was again an excellent opportunity to connect with industry professionals and feel the pulse of arts and culture in documentary filmmaking. The event draws thousands of industry insiders every year, enabling numerous productions to tell amazing stories by fostering coproductions and cofinancing.
The IMZ returned for their 35rd edition, representing our members and the performing arts in documentary filmmaking. We were delighted to present the IMZ Award to ‘Niemeyer 4 Ever’. This remarkable documentary, produced by Special Touch Studios, The Attic Productions and Mayana Films, powerfully demonstrates how art and culture can flourish in public spaces, even in the face of adversity. We also applaud Intuitive Pictures for winning
the Best Arts & Culture Pitch with ‘The Shape of Blue’. This project, along with four other impressive entries by AL BORDE FILMS, Solent Production, Pilum and GA&A Productions, is a testament to the innovative spirit and creative excellence that Sunny Side of the Doc fosters.
The marketplace continues to be a pivotal event for the documentary community. It provides a platform for important conversations and showcases innovative work. We proudly look back on a six-year-long collaboration with Sunny Side of the Doc and on a diverse range of groundbreaking productions pitched that were able to progress to the next stage thanks to the invaluable support of the platform. We were honoured to be a part of this event again in 2024 and look forward to its continued growth and success!
A staple within the cultural television industry, the annual Golden Prague International Television Festival returned for its 61st edition and the IMZ was once again a part of it.
Addressing issues of diversity and equality in the performing arts, we hosted a panel on ‘Women in Music and Representation on Screen’. The session explored how the industry has historically received female musicians compared to their male counterparts. Co-moderators Laetitia Huberti and Miikka Maunula led a lively discussion with panellists Anders Lindstad, Iveta Apkalna, Marlene Brüggen, Anja Danielsen Stabell and Daniel Gorjão, who shared their experiences promoting female artists and considered how their work is received by the public.
We are delighted to announce that the 2024 EBU-IMZ Outstanding Achievement Award was presented to Canadian documentary film-
maker Larry Weinstein. As IMZ President Laetitia Huberti said: ‘There is always an unexpected angle, a unique facet of his subject matter that only he can recognise, as his latest film Beethoven’s Ninth: An Ode to Humanity has shown once again’.
We also celebrated our former IMZ Vice-President and dedicated member for nearly 60 years, Reiner Moritz, for receiving the prestigious ‘Artis Bohemiae Amicis’ medal from the Czech Minister of Culture. The award recognises his outstanding work in promoting Czech arts and culture abroad through his productions. His lifelong dedication to cultural films and documentaries has created a remarkable oeuvre and continues to inspire us all.
We warmly congratulate the winners of this year’s festival - especially all IMZ Members among them - and thank our partners Czech Television and EBU + all panellists.

On 20 June, 16 esteemed jurors spent an intense day of deliberation to select the best audiovisual performing arts works from around the world, as the IMZ hosted the 52nd Semi Final Round of Judgings for the prestigious International Emmy® Awards in cooperation with ORF-Enterprise in Vienna.
This important event brought together top television professionals—including producers, directors, editors, buyers and distributors— tasked with evaluating productions across two major categories: ‘TV Movie/Mini Series’ and ‘Arts Programming’. Leveraging its expertise and vast global network, the IMZ was entrusted to assemble an expert jury for the ‘Arts Programming’ category and celebrated a particularly diverse international panel of jurors,
reflecting the event’s growing global reach and influence.
The impressive number of submissions showcased the remarkable talent and creativity in the field. Winners were ultimately crowned at the annual Awards Gala in New York in November, celebrating excellence on a worldwide stage. The award in the category Arts Programming went to the documentary ‘Pianoforte’, produced by Telemark, HBO, The Fryderyk Chopin Institute, Ventana, ZDF/ARTE, Mazovia Warsaw Film Fund, MX35 and the Polish Film Institute.
The IMZ regularly joins industry events around the world, to lend expertise to specialised conference programmes and to engage in the judging process of renowned festivals + international competitions.
The single-day conference, hosted by IMZ Member Papageno brought together representatives from past and future European Capitals of Culture and the UNESCO Cities of Music to explore ways on how to sustain cultural momentum beyond the event and to foster international collaboration. As part of this initiative, Max Beckham-Ortner (IMZ) spoke on the panel on ‘Cities of Music’, emphasising the role of cultural institutions in shaping their cities’ cultural landscapes.
CIMIx - Creative Industries meet Industry: The Crossover Edition served as a platform for creative professionals from film, television, music and gaming to connect and explore global business opportunities. The IMZ proudly returned to participate in this flagship event, representing its members and the performing arts industry in media. As part of a panel of Austrian visionaries, Content.Agent’s Frank Schulleri also spoke on Innovative tech solutions for the distribution of AV content.
Our network was well-represented among 1,000 music + arts professionals from around the world. IMZ Members had the opportunity to showcase their projects and invite to meetings at our umbrella stand. A major international trade fair in Germany’s capital, the event offered invaluable networking opportunities and conference + mentoring sessions that tackled critical topics such as AI, genre fluidity and the future of music labels.
Every year, the IMZ takes part in the nomination + judging process of the ICMA International Classical Music Awards. We’re especially happy to see two of our members, Unitel and Accentus win the awards for the Best Video in the Opera category and in the Performance and Documentaries category respectively. A concert in the magnificent Paleau de la Música concluded the glamorous award ceremony.
Celebrating the best of television since 2018, the IMZ has been a proud jury member for the category Performing Arts for many years. The top honour went to the production by Vereinigte Bühnen Wien: Händel’s oratorio Theodora. The production featured a monumental staging, with the set transforming into a coffeehouse-cathedral. Across all categories, the BBC stood out, other notable winners included Apple TV+, NHK Japan and Globo TV Brazil.
The IMZ was also represented at the following industry gatherings in 2024:
+ EFM European Film Market (15-21 Feb)

Staying on the forefront of future developments
Driven by its mission to foster innovation in the sector through new technologies, the IMZ and its members developed Content.Agent – a digital marketplace for content license trading. With its modular toolbox, Content.Agent empowers content owners and sellers to efficiently manage and monetise their catalogues and allows content buyers to easily find the right content + rightsholders with a few clicks.
To support the sector’s transition into the AI era, the solution leverages the IMZ Metadata Standard, the European License Ledger and the International Standard Content Code (ISCC) – an open-source technology published as an international standard under ISO-24138 that complements established identifiers like ISAN and EIDR.
This year marked a major transition with the passing of leadership to Frank Schulleri, who
has been with the platform since 2021 and will now spearhead its development and rollout within the international film industry. In 2024, platform has been showcased at key industry events, most notably hosting the inaugural presentation of the Avant Première Online catalogue powered by Content.Agent, introducing users to the platform’s key benefits and usability features.
Looking ahead to 2025, Content.Agent will expand its operational team and officially launch the Content.Agent marketplace with over 1,000 available titles. For a limited time, the platform is available free of charge. Following the official rollout, it will be accessible to IMZ Members at a reduced price.
Built with and for our members, the IMZ is excited by the progress and encourages the entire industry to join in as we move forward.
A European platform for opera + dance, FEDORA Platform encourages innovation with prestigious prizes and grants. The Prize Biennale features categories for Opera, Dance, Education and Digital. With €300,000 in prize money and many applying productions, the FEDORA platform helps productions gain publicity and secure funding.
Always eager to promote cross-sectoral innovation and creativity, the IMZ as an expert partner has provided + chaired the jury for their Digital Prize since 2019 - and is doing so again for the 2025 Prizes Biennale. Rewarding novel forms of artistic expression and access to opera and ballet through digital innovation, The FEDORA Digital Prize funds its winners to the tune of €50,000, as well as granting the support of the global consulting firm Kearney.
Out of 52 applications, 34 projects have been chosen, spanning all four categories of the FEDORA Prizes, involving 112 cultural organisations and partners from 26 countries and showcasing the work of 178 emerging artists.
From digital performances to theatrical productions, these projects are redefining the landscape of the performing arts and film industry. We invite you to explore these projects and support the artists and organisations behind them.
Congratulations to all the shortlisted projects and their creators. We look forward to the final selection and the 2025 Prizes Biennale!

After two years of groundbreaking work, CCI Thrive culminated in the creation of an operational prototype for an AI-driven cross-sector data sharing platform: CCEyes.
A successor project of Digital Cross Over (2019-2021), CCI Thrive facilitates cross-sector data sharing, thereby supporting the growth and competitiveness of the cultural and creative industries (CCI) and inspiring new business models in the context of digital transformation and artificial intelligence as critical driver of change. By leveraging a data-driven approach, CCI Thrive aspires to enhance revenue streams within the sector, cultivate a deeper understanding of audience preferences and foster a sustainable integration of ethical, cultural and environmental values into the core of cultural creation.
The journey began with discussions on metadata models, interoperability and data management strategies and resulted in the development of a robust, pragmatic solution: The CCEyes platform —a fully operational, user-friendly prototype that now serves as a valuable resource. The platform simplifies access to a vast repository of relevant industry data, making it an essential tool for researchers, artists, tech enthusiasts and music lovers alike.
CCEyes was officially introduced at Avant Première 2024 during the Innovation Day and is now accessible to the public, offering a gateway to a wealth of knowledge and insights that could transform how the creative and cultural industries operate in Europe.

The discussion focused on the revolutionary impact of generative AI in the music industry and the future of immersive experiences with Augmented + Extended Reality.
IMZ ACADEMY WORKSHOP IN COLLABORATION WITH
The IMZ’s partnership with FEDORA Platform reflects a shared commitment to equipping cultural organisations for success in the digital age. Central to this is the workshop: ‘Digital Transformation in Action’, a key component
of FEDORA Platform’s Next Stage initiative.
The workshop presented three impactful case studies of successful digital transformation initiatives in opera + dance institutions, offering insights into best practices and measurable results while challenging participants to develop their own digital transformation projects.
The members-only format explores issues of great relevance to our industry. The 2024 edition centered around how innovative technologies such as remote systems and AI are advancing multi-camera performance capture, with experts Johnny Laville + Morag McIntosh (BBC), Matic Gajšek (OnstageAI), João Hora, Calouste Gulbenkian, Matt Parkin + Phil Glenny (Stagecast) first weighing in on the topic before opening up the conversation to all at-
tendees. All Members are encouraged to take part in IMZ Round Tables and share their perspective with the network.
Exploring gender equality and diversity in the performing arts, experts discussed the evolving representation and opportunities for women in music. Reflecting on their own experiences, they examined the industry’s and public’s perception of female musicians from a historical as well as current perspective.
The group convened for the first time in 2024 as a think tank of field professionals. Tasked with shaping the future of IMZ Academies, it aims to elevate standards, foster innovation and drive professionalisation within the sector.

Designed to support emerging talent in media and the performing arts, create new business opportunities for our members and nurture the sector as a whole, the IMZ organises various pitching and networking formats. IMZ Pitching Sessions allow filmmakers to pitch to a jury of key industry players, receive immediate feedback as well as the chance to take their project to the next stage. One-on-One Expert Sessions use a fast-paced, speed-dating format to connect presenters with buyers and industry leaders to facilitate professional collaborations and open up business opportunities.
For the fifth year, IMZ has teamed up with Sunny Side of the Doc, the marketplace for documentary + narrative experiences, to host Pitching Sessions for two categories. With the chance to take their idea to Sunny Side of
the Doc in June, the 8 pre-selected projects were pitched at Avant Première in Berlin and eventually narrowed down to three winners: ‘The Premiere’ by Backstory Media in the Arts & Culture category and ‘Uncanny Reverie’ by Studio M.A.R.S. + ‘The Sound Voice Project’ in the Digital Creation & XR category.
Two formats were featured in Berlin this year: ‘Meet the Buyers’ provided invaluable networking opportunities with buyers from broadcast + streaming companies, opening doors to potential acquisition deals. Meanwhile, ‘Meet the Movers and Shakers’ allowed attendees to pick the brains of various leaders of the creative industry and gain insight into their respective fields. Together, these formats provide a unique platform for project development and networking.

Music Film Festivals are a key part of our mission to provide broad and low-threshold access to the performing arts, reaching and engaging new audiences worldwide. Having travelled successfully all over Europe to 25 cities and as far as Japan, the USA and Brazil, they have attracted thousands of visitors of all ages and inspired local audiences with the allure of music, opera and dance.
Building on our expertise and extensive film database and network, the IMZ remains a trusted partner to cities, cultural capitals, embassies, festivals, educational institutions and cultural initiatives wishing to showcase music + dance films. Our services include customised curation of programmes, clearance of rights, technical, as well as marketing and communicational support.
As the longest-running IMZ Music Film Festival since its debut over three decades ago, the festival once again turned Vienna’s Rathausplatz into an open-air cinema, featuring an enchanting interplay of culture, summer and culinary delights against a spectacular backdrop.
The 34th edition boasted an eclectic mix of genres as diverse as classical, jazz, pop, ballet and contemporary dance, as well as a comprehensive Children’s Opera programme curated entirely to the benefit of the festival’s youngest visitors.
Kicking off with a ‘Grrr!’, the opening night featured the legendary Rolling Stones jubilee tour concert, followed by 60 more nights of musi-
cal highlights, including Queen, Coldplay and Eric Clapton. Noteworthy jazz and blues representations included nine-time Grammy winner Norah Jones and baritone vocalist Gregory Porter. Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, performed in a unique collaboration by four orchestras simultaneously in Leipzig, Paris, Milan and Vienna, as well as George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, celebrating its centenary, were shown. In honour of Arnold Schoenberg’s 150th birthday, three different productions were presented in this year’s programme.
VIENNA MUSIC FILM
Zagreb Classic, now a staple of the capital’s cultural scene, was founded in 2016 and has since captivated many visitors of all ages. For the very first time, the IMZ, in collaboration with Stage Media Productions, curated a film
programme, adding a new dimension to this already beloved event. The festival was staged from 27-29 June at King Tomislav Square and featured Salzburg Festival 2022’s rendition of The Magic Flute and Bavarian State Opera 2023’s production of Die Fledermaus. Judging by the number of attendees, many took this rare opportunity to experience world-class operatic performances under the open skies of Zagreb.
As part of the Austria Day on 7 September at Kino Metropol in Olomouc, the Magic Flute (Salzburger Festspiele 2022) was presented. The screening served as a celebration of the rich cultural ties between Austria and the city of Olomouc and was a part of an entire day of screenings, concerts and presentations.
