FOREWORDS

Warm words of welcome, appreciation and thanks!

forewords After thirty years of successful “Avant Premiere Screenings” the IMZ has decided to head for new shores creating its very own “Avant Première MUSIC + MEDIA MARKET” 2014 in Berlin. Neither the decision itself nor the realisation of this project would have been possible without the initiative, courage and enormous efforts of our principal supporters: We thank Bernd Hellthaler (EuroArts Music International) for his vision and dedication for a new event to set standards in networking and exchange within our industry. Sincere appreciation we owe also to Wolfgang Bergmann (ARTE) for his constant inspiration and enduring commitment throughout the development of a unique concept. Many thanks go to IMZ board members and IMZ members providing us with valuable contacts and expertise as well as organisational support. We thank our support group in Berlin for the warm welcome and substantial guidance; our co-operation partners Berlinale, Radialsystem V, ARTE and Berliner Philharmonie for adding to an exciting first edition of the Avant Première 2014 MUSIC + MEDIA MARKET BERLIN and the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Musicboard Berlin and Visit Berlin for their sponsoring. Last but not least and on behalf of the whole IMZ board, I want to thank the IMZ team most warmly for its committed and fantastic work in transforming a vision into a comprehensive programme. For the first edition of the Avant Première 2014 MUSIC + MEDIA MARKET BERLIN we wish you many enjoyable hours of high-class industry as well as special screenings, successful business and networking opportunities and time with like-minded partners and friends! Arild Erikstad IMZ President 10

forewords And what a premiere indeed! It is the first time that “IMZ Avant Première 2014 MUSIC + MEDIA MARKET BERLIN” takes place in Berlin. We are thrilled that the most important co-production and networking event for producers of music and performing arts films, distributors and TV representatives takes place during the International Berlin Film Festival “Berlinale”. This event is a promising enrichment for Germany’s creative capital and a new colour in the festival landscape. Let Berlin inspire you, breathe the creative air and enjoy the unique lifestyle here – not only during the conference! Have a great time, lots of good meetings, interesting panels and, of course, we hope you make some great deals. Enjoy! Kirsten Niehuus Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg Managing Director – Film Funding www.medienboard.de

Consequently it’s a pleasure to see the “IMZ Avant Première 2014 MUSIC + MEDIA MARKET BERLIN” taking place in Berlin for the first time. This international platform for co-operation and networking provides an excellent opportunity for exchange between Berlin’s music industry and creators, producers as well as distributors of cultural films and performing arts. Mutual approaches will be explored and knowledge shared at panels and discussions in the course of this fair. Berlin’s eclectic and renowned music scene will enhance an exchange of multi-discipline art and media formats with its innovative approaches at Avant Première. forewords Dear members of the IMZ, guests of the Avant Première 2014 MUSIC + MEDIA MARKET BERLIN and visitors to Berlin, Welcome to Berlin! After 30 years in Cannes, the IMZ grants us a very special premiere these days. Berlin is highly delighted by the very first visit of Avant Première MUSIC + MEDIA MARKET and welcomes the renowned, international experts from the film and music industry cordially to Berlin, the city of film. The timing of Avant Première could not be better: Due to you and the Berlinale the city currently radiates an extraordinary international atmosphere. In front of the Berlinale palace stars can be spotted, but one star is always present: Berlin. The city has got global flair and embodies an exciting blend of high- and subculture, film, music and fashion. It’s here, where tomorrows’ trends emerge, in a mixture of authenticity, history, spirit of the time, in memory of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, in a metropolis offering open space. For your festival we wish you success and an inspiring exchange in a city where your industry already found a home: Berlin became a national and international acknowledged hotspot for film art, making this city the perfect location for your event. It’s an honour for Berlin to welcome you at the occasion of your festival. We hope you enjoy your time in Berlin. Come again any time! Burkhard Kieker CEO visitBerlin www.visitBerlin.com 13

imz film series PERFORMING ARTS FILMS − THE HIGHLIGHTS 2013 Music doesn’t need film. We listen to it and we are perfectly happy. Why add moving images? As long as we start off with music and try to illustrate it our work is doomed to failure. Our images will never withstand the enigmatic perfection of music. So what can we do, filmmakers who love music and want to work with it? We can turn this relation upside down. We create images and let them provoke music. And this is what good music films do. They let music emerge out of their images with artistic necessity. Which may lead to unforgettable experiences – of music. We, at IMZ, try to fire those unforgettable experiences. And the last season’s best films are presented in our festival. Each programme offers a variety of subjects and artistic approaches: Opera, dance and concert, documentaries and absolute music films created only for the camera. Eric Schulz’ portrait of Karajan is a nice symbol to start our festival as it focuses on recording music rather than on music itself. We present dance films from Israel and the Netherlands detached from any conventional stage. We show glossy productions such as Olivier Simonnet’s recording of Nijinsky’s “Sacre du printemps” but we are equally impressed by what can be done out of just one pianist and one spotlight – Tristan Cook’s “Scarbo” featuring the amazing Inon Barnatan.
