McConnell Inn

The McConnell Inn is named for its original owner, John McConnell, who built the home for his family residence. It was completed, after two years of construction, in 1900. When the tradesmen who crafted the woodwork and leaded glass passed away, per the rules of their trade guilds, the plans and tools that they used were destroyed. The original painters signed their work on a beam in the third floor, which guests can view today.
The McConnell Inn was bought by the current owners in 1985 and opened it as a Bed and Breakfast in June, 1986. They knew from the very start that this home would make an ideal and very cozy B & B. Within their first six months, they renovated the interior, from new plumbing to refinishing woodwork to hanging wall paper. The hosts have lovingly refurbished this Green Lake landmark to its Victorian grandeur – including preserving the leather wainscoting in the dining room, the hand-tooled parquet floors in the foyer and formal parlor and all of the original leaded windows.
The Inn’s exterior has been rejuvenated by strippingoff over a dozen layers of old paint and repainting in historical colors. The Inn is one of the very few of its kind remaining in Green Lake. Throughout the renovations, the owners have taken great care to ensure that the original design was not altered, but stands as a reminder of a very affluent past. They are always making minor improvements to meet the changing needs of our guests, including the addition of Jacuzzis
and fireplaces.

Briar Patch Bed & Breakfast Inn

Briar Patch began as a simple one-room log cabin with a sleeping loft above in 1805. It is believed to have been a tenant house on Charles Fenton Mercer’s 1300-acre grant. The DiZerega family purchased Mercer’s home on the hillside over Aldie and its acreage in 1843, calling it by the name of Hillcrest. Hillcrest grew during the next twenty years, acquiring a large living room, library and dining room, as well as seven bedrooms in the main house, along with two cottages, a studio and ten-stall stable, milking parlor, and fenced fields for cattle and horses. By the 1860’s, the little log cabin had become a beautiful estate. After more than a century of DiZerega ownership, Hillcrest was sold in 1965 to Jean and Bill Costin, who whimsically changed the name to The Briar Patch. The additions made by the Costin’s to the home are delightful—a new kitchen and breakfast area overlook a flagstone patio, gardens bloom with color, old trees offer
shelter, and a sparkling pool invites a cooling dip on hot summer days while the Blue Ridge Mountains lend their majesty to the scene. The current owners now walk the old pine floors, sit before a glowing fire, and perhaps wonder who came before them at Briar Patch. Like many recent residents, Ellen Goldberg works in Washington but fell in love with the beauty and serenity of the Piedmont. Her goal has been realized in using this old home as a Bed and Breakfast.
