Hello Readers!
A warm welcome to this edition of Scene Magazine! You may (hopefully!) recognise that I’m not the usual face you see in the ‘Editor’s Intro’. Scene Magazine recently changed hands and I am lucky enough to be taking over the baton from Alan and Emma who started the magazine 23 years ago. They’re now hanging up their boots to spend more time with family as well as doing plenty of travelling. Talking of boots, I feel I have some big ones to fill! Alan and Emma have done a splendid job keeping local residents informed with news and events in the area over the years. Running a magazine is not an easy job, particularly during the many recessions and a pandemic that we’ve seen during that time! Remember those uncertain times, when we were all locked indoors during the coronavirus pandemic? Scene Magazine continued thanks to the dedication of its staff and with the help of its Distribution company IMS Group. So, you’ll be pleased to know that IMS Group will be taking over both Scene titles. As well as providing GPS tracked door-to-door distribution services, IMS Group are also experienced publishers, having published many different council residents magazine titles over the years, as well as more recently Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole’s largest circulated magazine ‘BH Living’ which is now in it’s 8th year of publication. There’ll be a new team at the helm now, but we’re still as keen as ever to hear what’s going on in your world. If you’ve got an interesting story, why not drop us a line and let us know and if we’ve space, we’ll do our best to let our readers know too. Write to us at: editor@scenemagazine.co.uk Until next time,

EVERYBODY NEEDS GOOD NEIGHBOURS The Bursledon Good Neighbours group is a friendly team of local volunteers dedicated to helping residents who need a little extra support in their day to day lives. The volunteers provide transport to important appointments, including hospitals, GP and dental visits helping local people get where they need to be safely and reliably. They also assist with shopping trips and can lend a hand with small DIY jobs and basic technology tasks. For many of the group’s clients, these acts of support make a huge difference and help them maintain their independence. Do you have a few spare hours? The group are currently looking for more volunteers to join the friendly team. If you have a little time during the week and would like to make a positive difference in the lives of local people, they would love to hear from you. Roles could include being a driver or taking phones calls from the clients and matching a volunteer to the task. Drivers receive reimbursement towards the petrol costs so volunteering doesn’t have to leave volunteers out of pocket. Volunteering with the Good Neighbours Group is not just valuable to the group’s clients but also incredibly rewarding for those giving this support. Residents are always grateful for the support they receive. We are a welcoming and supportive team with coffee mornings held twice a year where we can all meet to share experiences and enjoy each other’s company. We’ve heard the bacon sandwiches are very tasty too! To find out more please call 02381 550246

SPECIAL EVENTS TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF ‘TOURIST GUIDING’ Southampton’s rich history, legendary characters and hidden stories are set to come alive this summer as award-winning guide and local historian Cheryl Butler celebrates fifty years since joining the very first Blue Badge tourist guide training course in the Southern Tourist Board region. What began in 1976 as a seemingly ordinary local history lecture series soon revealed itself to be the launch of professional tourist guide training in the south of England. Half a century later, Cheryl Butler remains the only member of that original course still actively guiding — and proudly holds Blue Badge Guide ID No. 1 issued in the region. To mark this Golden Jubilee, Cheryl will lead a special programme of five themed heritage walks across Southampton during summer 2026. Each walk revisits major anniversaries, festivals and historical commemorations that have shaped Southampton’s cultural life over the past five decades. Tours are approximately 90 minutes unless otherwise stated, cost £5 per person, and proceeds will support future heritage and community events. Highlights include: • Jane Austen: Typhus, Smallpox & Melancholia Starting Point: St Michael’s Square, Bugle Street, Southampton 18 July (the date Jane Austen died) 11 am WeGotTickets Jane Austen: Typhus, Smallpox & Melancholia. A rare opportunity to complete a full circuit of Southampton’s medieval walls following new access created through the Bargate Quarter development. The celebrations also honour another major local cultural milestone: the birth of the Sarah Siddons Fan Club Theatre. Formed from the hugely popular theatrical ghost walks first created in 1988, the company went on to pioneer immersive street theatre rooted in Southampton’s true history. Plans are now underway to recreate its original production, ‘The Lepers Day Out’. POLICE NEWS BOBBI HELPS FREE UP POLICE TIME AND OFFERS ACCESS TO HELP FAST Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary’s introduction of new technological solutions is helping victims to get the support they need quicker than ever before. People who may have never wanted to call the police, are now seeking advice through new features including an online automated chat function, which is identifying potential crimes and ensuring they are reported in the right way. The new technological solutions being used across the force have saved more than 31,000 police hours. The digital improvements make it simpler, faster and more convenient for people to contact police for nonemergency matters which helps free up officer and staff time to focus more on the frontline, protecting the public. At the heart of these improvements is ‘Bobbi’, the Constabulary’s AI-powered virtual assistant, which is playing a key role in helping victims identify potential criminal offences as well as offering guidance and support on a range of other topics. Introduced to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and Thames Valley Polices’ Joint Operations Unit in November 2025, Bobbi provides people with an accessible way to seek advice and support at any time of day, while also recognising when concerns may indicate a more serious issue. By asking the right questions and analysing responses, Bobbi can help highlight behaviours that may amount to criminal offences, even where the person seeking advice may not initially recognise this themselves. This allows Bobbi to guide users towards appropriate support, including connecting them quickly with a contact handler when needed. In one example, a woman contacted Bobbi for advice about unusual behaviour by a neighbour of someone known to her. Bobbi identified that the circumstances could be linked to stalking and offered the option to speak to someone. She was connected via live chat to a contact handler, who provided reassurance, advice and ensured a police report was created. The woman later said she had not realised the situation could be a police matter, highlighting the importance of early identification and intervention. In another case, a woman contacted Bobbi from outside the UK after being threatened by a man living in Hampshire. She was given appropriate guidance and signposted to further support, ensuring her concerns were recorded and directed to the relevant police teams. These efficiencies are particularly important during the summer months, when demand on police services increases significantly. 12 | The Scene | August - September '26
Since February 2023, the wider Contact Management modernisation programme has focused on improving how people access support. As well as Bobbi, a range of other new tools and services have been introduced to help Hampshire Police be more responsive and accessible. The introduction of a dedicated ‘Digital Desk’ has improved the way online enquiries are managed, helping resolve issues more quickly and freeing up phone lines for those who need them most. The ‘Victims Portal’ is also giving people greater control, with almost 20,000 users able to receive updates, access support and contact officers at a time that suits them, reducing the need for follow-up calls from officers. Accessibility has been strengthened through a dedicated video relay service for British Sign Language users, making it easier for Deaf communities to communicate directly with police. At the same time, extended opening hours at police station front counters ensure that those who prefer to speak to someone face-to-face can do so more easily. Together, it’s claimed that these changes are making it easier than ever for people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to contact the police. Chief Superintendent Clare Knibbs, said: “These changes are transforming the way we support the public. Bobbi is managing low level signposting and advice, and where it identifies risk or vulnerability, it is then escalating to a human operator to ensure appropriate safeguarding and response. “At the same time, by saving more than 31,000 personnel hours over the last year, the improvements are enabling our officers and staff to focus more of their time on protecting communities and responding to demand. “Whether people choose to contact us online, use our virtual assistant, call us, or visit a front counter, we want them to feel confident they can reach us quickly and get the help they need.” t: 01202 611 100

MAN JAILED FOR CAR EVENT DOUGHNUTS SENDS MESSAGE TO OTHER YOUNG DRIVERS A man has been jailed after CCTV clips showed him dangerously driving near pedestrians at an illegal car meet. Several video clips show Olly Fifield drifting in ‘doughnuts’ amidst crowds of people in Southampton. The 20-year-old, of Thornycroft Avenue in Camberley, Surrey, was sentenced on Monday 22 June at Southampton Magistrates Court after he was found guilty of dangerous driving in relation to an unauthorised car meet in September 2024. Fifield was filmed performing stunts in his pink BMW M3 in the car park on Harbour Parade, while crowds of onlookers stood by. He was handed a sentence of six months imprisonment, as well as being banned from driving for three years after his release. A deprivation order was also granted, meaning police have now seized his vehicle permanently. Police Sergeant James Hall, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “This young man was putting the lives of everyone in that crowd at risk. One tiny miscalculation from the driver could have resulted in dozens of people being seriously injured or worse.
“To anyone out there thinking of attending one of these car meets and behaving in a similar, ridiculous way, just ask yourself: Is that really worth the risk when you could lose your freedom, lose your car, get a criminal record? “I hope this sentence sends a strong message to everyone else in these communities that this behaviour will not be tolerated in Hampshire.”

RECIPE
Blackberry Crumble INGREDIENTS
Topping: • 100g plain flour • 115g unsalted butter • 100g brown sugar • 90g oats • 1 tsp cinnamon Filling: • 500g fresh OR frozen blackberries • 50g brown sugar • 1 tbsp plain flour • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 1 tsp cinnamon Tools: • Medium sized baking tray or Pyrex dish (8x8 or 9x9 inches) • Two mixing bowls • Scales • Measuring spoons Prep time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 45 minutes Serves: 6
RECIPE
Blackberry crumble is the perfect summer dessert! Blackberries are in season from late July to early October, and many farms offer blackberry picking. If you fancy picking your own summer berries for this recipe, you can head down to Pickwell Farm Shop in Bursledon, to gather your own strawberries, raspberries, and of course blackberries! Note: Blackberries can be quite bitter on their own, so if you want to sweeten it up you can use 250g of berries, and 700g of apples. You may need a deeper baking dish if adding apples.
METHOD
• Preheat the oven to 190C (175C Fan/Gas 5). • Lightly grease an 8x8 or 9x9 inch baking dish with some butter. • Place your blackberries into a large bowl and gently mix with the sugar, flour, lemon juice, and cinnamon. Be careful not to squash the berries! If using apples, core them and chop into chunks and mix with the ingredients. • Once all the fruit is completely coated, transfer into the prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer. • In a separate bowl, sift the flour and combine with the oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon. • Cut the butter into small cubes, and rub the butter into the dry ingredients using your hands. Once the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs, scatter the mixture evenly over the fruit. • If you have a sweet tooth, you can add more brown sugar and cinnamon to the top of the crumble. This helps to achieve that lovely golden crumble colour, and makes it super sweet! • Bake for 40-45 minutes. Once the crumble is browned and the fruit is bubbling its ready to take out! • Let the crumble cool for around 15 minutes before serving with a generous helping of custard or vanilla ice cream.

MACMILLAN GARDEN ROCKS THANKS TO 2ND HAMBLE BROWNIES When 2nd Hamble Brownie's Brown Owl, Michelle, saw a Facebook post from Rebecca at Southampton University Hospital, appealing for plants and pots to cheer up the Macmillan Garden at the Hospital, she knew just the girls to help out. The garden in question had a special meaning to Brown Owl. In 2018 she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer and during treatments and appointments she would access the Macmillan Centre and the garden which provides patients, friends, family and staff with peacefulness and calm in a busy bustling hospital. Michelle got in contact with Rebecca to offer the Brownies' help and at their next meeting Brown Owl explained to the girls Rebecca's problem and shared some photos. She also told the girls why the garden was special to her. Brown Owl then challenged the Brownies to design some cheerful and colourful rocks to inspire the visitors to the garden. The challenge was accepted and the Brownies produced some superbly decorated rocks, which were then waterproofed before Rebecca collected them. The colourful rocks now take pride of place in the Macmillan Garden for everyone to enjoy. “They really have brought some colour and joy to the garden” said the proud Brown Owl. So, if you are visiting the hospital, pop along to the garden on level B of the East Wing to view the rocks. If you can help bring some more colour to the garden by donating a plant or two, please contact Rebecca on email: rebecca.stacey@uhs.nhs.uk.

Designed to encourage young people to get active, try new experiences and connect with others in their community, this year's programme is bigger and more diverse than ever, with activities to suit all interests, abilities and experience levels. Participants can choose from a wide variety of activities throughout the summer, including circus skills, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and dance, rounders, rugby, Reformer Pilates, pickleball, AquaRun, badminton, CrossFit, fishing, Olympic weightlifting, pool inflatable sessions, street basketball, cricket, sailing, tennis, netball, football, dodgeball, laser tag, cycling, scooter and skateboard workshops, junior gym sessions and free swimming. LOCAL RESIDENTS PRODUCE A COOK BOOK Munch & Memories is a new book created by working with a group of senior cooks and food lovers. The second Munch and Memories project took place at Age Concern with sessions to explore multi-cultural food memories, resulting in a live healthy cooking session and a recipe book by a life story writer. The group of ladies really bonded around the experience and were keen to try each other’s recipes. The previous recipe book was created in the same way, but with local elderly residents at Velmore Community Centre. Some of the tasty recipes featured in the book include: corned beef hash, stuffed breast of lamb and
COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES TO LET Eastleigh Borough Council offer a range of commercial properties to let, including industrial units, office, and retail spaces to support local businesses and organisations. There’s even the option to lease a ‘virtual office’ from just £66 per month.

sausage meat rissoles, not to mention Sue’s delicious Apple Cake family recipe. The book features the history of the recipe and how it was used in family settings including individual memories which makes for a fascinating read. The project forms part of the local food education and production programme which has inspired more than 400 families across the Borough to cook nutritious recipes - and has made low-cost food more accessible. Families have been exploring food creatively and keeping nutrition budget-friendly, healthy and fun. The programme has supported ‘grow your own’ projects, as well as a local food partnership to improve flow of supplies between food banks, community pantries and fridges. The legacy of the programme includes the training of targeted staff and volunteers from local community organisations, including young carers, and support workers to continue the family sessions into the future. The Food Education and Production Programme (FEPP) is supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to tackle the cost of living, social isolation and nutritional health of local families.

GARDENING
A gardener’s job is never done If you’re a keen gardener then you’ll already know that the ‘Gardener’s To-Do’ list rarely, if ever, gets to the point where there is nothing on it. But generally August is considered one of the quieter months where you can sit back and admire your months of toil. But don’t sit back for too long, as there are a few little odd jobs to do! Late summer and early autumn can be busy times in the garden; planting spring bulbs, tidying beds, and repairing your lawn. So, after you’ve had some relaxing time in the garden, sipping ginger beer and listening to the cricket or reading the latest New York Times Bestseller, your green fingers are sure to be itching again. So, follow this monthly checklist to keep your outdoor space thriving.
August &September To-do August: High Summer Maintenance
August brings warm weather, meaning your main focus should be keeping plants hydrated and tidy. • Water wisely: Pour water at the base of your plants early in the morning or late in the evening. This stops the hot sun from evaporating the water before it reaches the roots and stops petals and leaves from being scorched. • Keep deadheading: Snip off faded flowers from roses, dahlias, and bedding plants. This tricks the plant into growing fresh new blooms. • Trim lavender and wisteria: Cut back your lavender bushes by about 2.5cm after they finish flowering to keep them neat. Shorten the long, whip-like side shoots of wisteria to restrict its wild growth. • Harvest daily: Pick tomatoes, runner beans, and courgettes as soon as they are ready. Picking them often actually tells the plant to grow even more food and discourages local wildlife to help themselves to the fruit of your toils, so don’t leave them hanging around for too long. • Sow quick crops: Plant salad leaves, spinach, and radishes now for a fast autumn harvest.
September: Autumn Prep and Planting
September brings cooler air, making it the perfect time to plan for next year and tidy up. • Plant spring bulbs: Buy and plant daffodil, crocus, and allium bulbs in your soil now. They will stay cosy all winter and pop up beautifully in the spring. • Fix your lawn: September is the best time to sow new grass seed. Rake away dead grass (thatch), spike hard soil with a fork, and scatter seed over bare patches. Give the seeds a thorough soak in the morning and evening. • Divide old plants: Dig up large clumps of perennials (plants that flower every year) that have finished flowering. Chop them in half with a spade and replant them in new spots to get free plants. • Protect your pond: Throw a fine net over your garden pond. This stops falling autumn leaves from landing in the water and rotting, muddying the water and potentially harming life under the water. • Clean your tools: Wash out empty pots, greenhouse shelves, and bird feeders to stop pests and diseases from moving in for the winter.

HAMBLE RIVER ROWING CLUB TAKES ON THE ‘VOGALONGA’ The Vogalonga (‘The Long Row’) is an annual amateur rowing regatta based in and around Venice, open to all forms of rowing vessels. It celebrates sustainable navigation, maritime traditions and the love of Venice. Boats from all over the world travelled to Venice for the 50th regatta on May 24th. There were 2280 boats and 9900 participants! Five boats from the Hamble River Rowing Club participated in the iconic event, there were 32 participants from the Bursledon Gig, and four magnificent rowers were aged over 80! The Vogalonga focuses on endurance and celebrating Venice; the route takes participants past the islands of Murano, Sant Erasmo and Burano, before entering the Grand Canal to finish the final stretch by St Mark’s Square. After months of planning, the Hamble Club turned up in their brilliant blue uniforms to begin the regatta bright and early. Once afloat, the rowers were awed by the sight of thousands of other rowers under the blazing blue sky. There was an extraordinary procession of gondolas, dragon boats, skiffs, galleys, rowing boats, and traditional Venetian craft. The row was especially demanding, as temperatures reached 35°C and the crew spent seven hours on

the water. Despite the challenge, the camaraderie of fellow rowers and cheers from the Venetian crowd kept everyone going! Rowers recalled a particularly memorable moment, when they spotted a fellow club member, Margi, cheering the team on from the Ponte del Guglie. She had flown all the way from the UK to cheer them on, and it gave the rowers a much-needed boost. As the Hamble rowers neared the end, sections started to become gridlocked as all the boats converged. Divers in bright orange wetsuits jumped into the water to help crews disentangle themselves and finish the race. All six of the Bursledon Gig boats passed the finish line successfully, a huge achievement and especially unforgettable to have competed in the 50th anniversary year! It was a fantastic adventure for all participants, and a true test of endurance and teamwork. An exciting experience that I’m sure no one will forget!

HAMBLE, BURSLEDON AND HOUND CHURCHES – HAMBLE LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Hamble and Bursledon Church have quite a remarkable history! The Monks of Hamble Priory built Hamble Church between 1109 and 1128. They subsequently built Bursledon Church later in this century, before building Hound church around 1230. Well-known local historian, Jeff Martin, will be telling the stories of these associated churches from their founding up to the present day at the Society’s next meeting. Hear intriguing stories, such as how Hamble Church was burnt and plundered by the French – despite having French connections. Learn how Bursledon Church was previously accessible by the river, until the railway was built. And finally, how Hound Church collapsed, injuring several members of the congregation! The churches stories reflect the history of the village, and the memorials inside them offer insight to prominent people who once lived in the parish. If you walk around the graveyards, you will discover the people who inhabited the village over the centuries, such as mariners, ship builders, agricultural workers and shop keepers.
If you wish to learn more of this history, you can attend the meeting on Thursday 10th September, 7.30PM at the Memorial (Rear) Hall. New members and visitors are always welcomed! The meeting fee is just £2. If you would like more information please contact our secretary, Margaret Greenfield, telephone 023 8045 4373.

SUCCESS WITH JOINT EVENT AT ST MARY’S CHURCH On the 13th and 14th June, Friends of St Mary’s Church Hound and The Hamble Flower Arranging Group joined forces to organise an enormously successful Flower Festival with refreshment and a plants and collectables sale.852 or by email to r.jackson@rjasurveyors .co.uk The beautiful weather and keen local interest drew in the crowds, making a remarkable £1400 to go towards improvements and repairs to the lovely 13th century church. The Friends’ would like to sincerely thank the flower arranging group and all the volunteers for their input. Their help was intrinsic to the success of the event. It is hoped that most of the major improvements and repairs at St Mary’s Church will be completed in time for the 800th anniversary celebrations. The anniversary reflects 800 years of the church being used as a place of worship and community building. If you have ideas for events at St Mary’s or simply feel you would like to lend a helping hand please do contact Robert Jackson on 0789 9985 852. The St Mary’s team will make you very welcome.

Dr Cheryl Butler recently gave an interesting talk to Hound Local History Society around ‘The Story of Itchen Ferry Village’, explaining that research had revealed that her family had a close connection to Itchen Ferry Village from the early days through to the twentieth century. An early 1596 map indicated pilgrims from Canterbury were regularly ferried across the Itchen to St Mary’s Church in Southampton as there were no bridges or churches on the east side of the river. Without a huge detour on very basic roads/paths there was no other way to cross the river and the Lords of the manors of Woolston and Southampton granted Itchen fishermen permission to ferry foot passengers and goods across the river. The village then was just a tiny hamlet in what is now Woolston, with villagers living hand to mouth to earn a basic living from farming, fishing and transporting goods and people across the river. Most villagers were fishermen and seafarers and remained so for centuries, returning from long voyages with fascinating stories and interesting artefacts. When the Floating Bridge was introduced in1836 it replaced all the old ferries and the village lost much of its livelihood. The distinctive Itchen Ferry boats became small yachts, regularly racing from Town Quay,
Ron Moody will be exhibiting a large selection of new watercolour and acrylic paintings in his quirky and colourful style, as well as unframed originals, prints, and cards. He will also have a number of interesting driftwood creations on display. Trish Moody will also be showing a selection of her high quality, hand-made summer bags, and other textiles. Come and enjoy the exhibition at 40 Grange Road, Netley Abbey, SO31 5FE. Open 22nd – 31st August between 11am and 5pm. train troops fighting in similar European villages until the end of the war in Europe in 1945. The Floating Bridge was replaced, with much fanfare, by the new Itchen Bridge in 1977, and the rest is history! Hound Local History Society Hound LHS meetings are held in St Edwards Church Hall, Netley Abbey. The History Room at Netley Station opens monthly on the last Saturday from 10am to 1pm. Find out more about the Society at: https://www.hugofox. com/community/hound-local-history-society-13390/h and when pleasure boats, sailing, rowing and racing became popular locally and nationally there was a welcome source of much needed income for villagers. With wealthy patrons investing in yacht racing Itchen Village sailors were employed far and wide as professional racing crews, some competing on Shamrock yachts in Americas Cup trials, enjoying the rare bonuses of plentiful food along with regularly replaced working/racing kit. By 1920 Itchen Village had been absorbed within Woolston and then into the borough of Southampton. In 1940, during World War 2, due to its close proximity to the Supermarine factory producing Spitfire fighter aircraft, raids by the German Luftwaffe bombers destroyed the whole area beyond repair. In preparation for D-Day and beyond, the ruined village was used to
THE MERCURY LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY HUB As part of their on-going commitment to support local The hub continues to thrive thanks to the dedicated band of volunteers, willingly giving up their time to make it happen. Everyone who visits The Hub will have sampled some of Joans delicious cheese straws and ginger biscuits. Joan is their longest serving volunteer, having been at the heart of it all since day one. She had her 90th birthday on the 13th June which was celebrated with tea and cake (she actually made the lemon drizzle herself ). Summer holiday children’s craft sessions are currently being planned and will be advertised on posters around the village as well as on Facebook.

SIGNIFICANT RISE IN NHS APP USE ACROSS HAMPSHIRE AND ISLE OF WIGHT
NEW DEMENTIA SUPPORT SERVICE LAUNCHING IN SOUTHAMPTON AND HAMPSHIRE
More people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are using the NHS App to manage their healthcare, with the latest figures showing 71% of people aged 13 and over are now registered with the NHS App, an 18% increase since April 2025, which amounts to more than 190,000 new users locally. The NHS App is playing an increasingly important role in transforming how people access care, in line with the 10 Year Health Plan. The shift from analogue to digital ensures that health services make the best use of modern technology to deliver a better service for patients, as well as supporting NHS teams by reducing administrative pressures. Many local libraries are now offering support to help those who struggle to get online by hosting NHS App drop-in sessions, where people can get practical, one-to-one help. These sessions are run by library staff, volunteers and NHS colleagues, ensuring people can get the support they need.
People living with dementia across Southampton and Hampshire will soon benefit from a new support service to help individuals maintain their cognitive abilities, improve overall wellbeing, and stay socially connected for longer. At the heart of the service, which launches in July, is Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST), a well-established, evidence-based group programme. CST is the only non-drug treatment recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for people with mild to moderate dementia and has been shown to improve memory, communication, and quality of life. The programme will offer small, supportive, hour-long group sessions delivered over 14 weeks in community venues across Southampton and Hampshire. Sessions will be led by trained facilitators and run throughout the year, with a mix of daytime and some weekend options to improve accessibility for individuals, their families, loved ones and carers The service will be delivered by Solent Mind in collaboration with Havant & East Hampshire Mind and is funded by NHS Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Ian Stiff, Chief Operating Officer at Solent Mind on behalf of the three Minds, said: “CST can make a real difference to people living with dementia, helping them remain engaged, connected and confident for longer. We’re proud to be working to provide this vital support to more people across Southampton and Hampshire.” Further details about how to access the service, including course locations and start dates, will be available in July.

BOOK REVIEW IT ENDS HERE – HEIDI PERKS If you are looking for a psychological thriller but with the added bonus of the story being set local to our area then you will not go far wrong with It Ends Here by Bournemouth author Heidi Perks. This is a book that has it all, suspense, drama and intrigue. It’s what I call ‘a great page turner’. Lies, secrets, betrayal and a gun all meet on one cold early spring morning in a remote boatyard café on the Isle of Wight. Five people enter for what seems is just another ordinary start to the day, not unlike countless cafes up and down the country, but the five are totally oblivious to what was about to unfold before them. Early morning meetings, maybe a coffee with a friend, or even just some quiet time alone - whatever the reasons these five people enter this café, only four will walk out. It Ends Here is a well set out easy flowing physiological thriller with a great twist which even caught me out, a pulsating read and a book you do not wish to end. As you would expect the characters are not all that they seem, each have their secrets and you spend your time exploring their complex individual lives thinking you have it all worked out only to start doubting yourself by the next chapter. As well as the intriguing lives of the group of
hostages, we also explore the secretive mind of the hostage taker: what has led them to this extreme situation and what led them down a road in which there is no turning back? Equally confused by the whole situation, we have our dogged Detective, Inspector Aaron Field. He has come over to the Island from Southampton with his colleague Kelly Holden and in a race against time they have to piece together all the loose clues, separating truth from fiction from the information unfolding before them. The book was a joy to read with the author cleverly twisting and turning the plot throughout the book and it’s not until the very end that we learn what has really happened within the confines of an unassuming Café in a sleepy town in Hampshire. It Ends Here by Heidi Perks Published March 2026 by Penguin Books 384 pages ISBN (print version) ISBN: 9781804946480 Reviewed by Brian Case / BH Living Magazine
