Talking to the people that matter on your behalf Hello and welcome to this latest edition of BH Living - the first since Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole officially joined forces to form the new BCP Council Authority.

The elections for the new BCP councillors took place on May 2. Nearly a third of people turned out to vote and changed the face of local politics, for the next five years at least. The Conservatives who had previously ruled Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole councils found themselves out in the cold as local residents instead opted for the alternatives.

More independents than ever were voted into office and have formed an alliance called the Unity Alliance together with Greens, Labour, Liberal Democrat’s and Poole People. The Alliance is led by Liberal Democrat Vikki Slade. Read her thoughts and vision for the new council in a BH Living exclusive interview on page 4.

There’s other important news and views included in this edition including another exclusive interview with Poole and Bournemouth hospital chief Debbie Fleming. In the first of a two part interview, she talks to us about the challenges the NHS is facing today and the unique challenges we face in our local hospitals. New Unity Alliance takes control at BCP Council – but what does it mean for local people?

Following the inaugural meeting of the new BCP Council in late May, a new Unity Alliance has overall control of the council.

How do you feel about being elected as leader of the new BCP Council?

The new Unity Alliance is a majority administration comprising Liberal Democrats, Christchurch Independents, Poole People, Labour, other Independents, Green and Alliance for Local Living councillors. It is made up of 39 councillors, with Liberal Democrat Cllr Vikki Slade at the helm.

It is an honour to have been elected to this role. Having reached out across party lines to establish common ground with councillors from different political ideologies, to be asked to lead them and then to win the support of others outside the alliance is humbling.

The Alliance was formed following local elections on 2 May, in which no one single party took overall control of the council. The Conservatives won 36 of the 76 seats in the historic election, with the Liberal Democrats taking 15 and the remaining seats going to candidates from a mix of independents and other parties.

The newly formed Unity Alliance took control following the first full BCP Council meeting on 21 May. Cllr Slade was also elected as leader at the same meeting, with Cllr David Flagg elected Chairman of the Council and Cllr George Farquhar Vice Chairman.

We spoke to Cllr Slade to find out more about the new Alliance and her vision for the future…

The people voted for change. They told us that they were sick of closed door, top down governance. They were worried that BCP would be a takeover. The Unity Alliance is like a breath of fresh air and we are determined to prove that if you put people before power you can get things done and carry the people with you.

It means policy making that listens to and involves local people, it recognises there are difficult decisions ahead but asks people to support them because they have the information and know it’s the right way. I hope it’s a model for future working.

What will your priorities be over the coming months?

We are now a single authority, but the services and tax take is unequal. It is unfair to expect people in one area to pay more or for residents in another area to have inferior services. One of our priorities is to harmonise both sides of this equation fairly and quickly.

We also believe that paying lip service to protecting our environment is not enough. We are committed not to just declaring a Climate Emergency but following through with

commitments to put the environment at the heart of ALL our policies; from moving to more sustainable transport options right through to getting our own house in order.

We know that some communities have been left behind and we are determined to address this; early intervention for families saves money and improves the lives of wider communities; building homes for rent ensures local people are prioritised and the local economy sees investment.

Improved facilities and new clinics at local hospitals £4.5m refurbishment for heart labs New state-of-the-art facilities have been unveiled at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital’s cardiac catheter labs following a £4.5m refurbishment. Former Liverpool FC and Scotland captain Graeme Souness proudly cut the ribbon to reopen the four refurbished labs, which will improve quality of care for patients and extend the availability of cardiac procedures including electrophysiology.

Graeme, who is a former heart patient and patron of the Bournemouth Heart Club, said: “I’m very aware of the work you all do and how important it is for this community and the difference it can make to peoples’ lives. I know from first-hand experience what a fantastic job you do and I’m very grateful for that. On behalf of everyone who’s been here and will be here, I thank you.”

New birth clinic for local mums-to-be A new birth clinic will provide additional care for local mums who are pregnant with more than one baby. At the multiples birth clinic in the St Mary’s Maternity Unit in Poole, mothers will have scans followed by a consultant obstetrician appointment, with a specialist midwife on-hand to provide extra support.

The antenatal clinic has been introduced to improve continuity of care for local women and support improved outcomes for mums and their babies. It is the first antenatal clinic to be run jointly by Poole and the Royal Bournemouth Hospital’s maternity departments. Patients who live in both Bournemouth and Poole will be seen at Poole Hospital, where midwives from both trusts will be present.

New mini MRI scanner Local patients will benefit from a new mini MRI scanner at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, which it is hoped will lower waiting times and provide more comfortable treatment for radiology patients. The £300,000 scanner was purchased following a successful year-long appeal by Bournemouth Hospital Charity.

The target was reached thanks to a £100,000 grant from Talbot Village Trust, in addition to many generous donations from people across the community, including hospital patients and staff, supporters of Bournemouth Hospital Charity and local corporate and community groups.

The coast with the most

Bournemouth residents are set to benefit from the UK’s fastest broadband services following a major investment of £35m.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole beaches have clocked up an impressive 23 Blue Flag and Seaside Awards in the latest round of accolades from environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, making our local coastline the area to receive the most awards nationally.

The work will form part of CityFibre plans to replace the nation’s legacy copper-based networks with gigabit-capable full fibre connectivity. CityFibre already owns a substantial full fibre network in Bournemouth that reaches approximately 21,000 homes but on completion, the state-of-the-art network will reach nearly every home and business.

By using fibre optic cables for every stage of the connection from the customer’s home or business to the internet, users are offered a significantly superior and more reliable broadband service, with download speeds 20 times faster and upload speeds 150 times faster than the average fixed broadband connection in the UK. As well as ramping up our home broadband speeds, the new infrastructure is expected to boost productivity and innovation, and deliver millions in economic benefits for the town.

Expansion of the Bournemouth network is due to begin in late summer 2019, with Vodafone Gigafast broadband services set to go live soon afterwards.

Leave Only Footprints The fantastic performance of our local beaches in the Keep Britain Tidy awards is testament to the work of the Leave Only Footprints campaign. This local initiative was devised in 2018 with the intention of encouraging beach-goers to clear up after their day at the seaside, putting rubbish in the bins provided.

The announcement follows the news earlier this year that Bournemouth beach has once again been rated the UK’s best beach in TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards, and ranks as the sixth best beach in the Europe and the twentieth best in the world.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole beaches now boast a combined total of 9 Blue Flags and 14 Seaside Awards. The area’s Blue Flag beaches are Alum Chine, Branksome Chine, Canford Cliffs, Durley Chine, Fishermans Walk, Sandbanks, Shore Road, Southbourne and – newly accredited for 2019 – Boscombe’s Manor Steps.

On top of this, all nine Blue Flag locations have the added honour of receiving Seaside Awards, as well as the beaches at Bournemouth, Boscombe, Friar’s Cliff, Avon and Highcliffe.

Chris Saunders, Head of Operations for Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole Tourism, said: “We’re so proud of the number of awards we’ve received this year. The team works hard to care for our beaches… We consider ourselves very lucky to be the guardians of such a breathtaking stretch of coastline and it’s great to know that Keep Britain Tidy have given us their stamp of approval.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton commented: “When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an international Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country.”

The campaign has since broadened its scope to encompass steps taken towards making the coast greener and at the forefront of sustainable and ecofriendly tourism. Embraced by the local community, as well as a host of businesses and organisations, the campaign has amassed 1575 volunteer hours on litter picks and beach cleans across Bournemouth and Poole in the last year.

“Leave Only Footprints has reinforced a sense of pride among locals and regular visitors,” said Head of Operations for Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole Tourism Chris Saunders.

New routes take off from Bournemouth Airport

Ryanair’s new services to Dublin and Prague are now running from Bournemouth Airport. The airline’s summer schedule includes 13 routes in total, with new routes to Dublin and Prague now on the weekly roster.

Bournemouth Airport’s Managing Director Stephen Gill said: “The new route by Ryanair to Dublin, with its vibrant Irish culture and heritage, is great news for leisure travellers and the business community. The launch of the summer schedule also marks Ryanair’s first time to Prague, the capital city of Czech Republic, from Bournemouth. The airport team looks forward to warmly welcoming passengers.”

Stephen added that the new routes are part of an anticipated increase in passengers for the airport, part of “a projected 20 per cent growth in passenger numbers over the next two years here at Bournemouth – equivalent to approximately 150,000 extra passengers.”

The Dublin service will fly four times a week; Bournemouth to Prague is twice weekly.

Christchurch skate park set for summer opening A state-of-the art skate park is set to open this summer at the Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre following a full refurbishment of the existing park. The work forms part of the ambitious Christchurch Play Project, which has seen £1.2 million invested into local playgrounds throughout the borough.

Poole design company Maverick Industries has worked with the council to create designs for the new park, which is set to include a range of features including a Quarterpipe, Quarterpipe Hip, Spine, Floating Ledge, Flatbank, Snow Plough Hip and a Bowled Quarter pipe.

Save water and money

this summer Here at Bournemouth Water we’re passionate about using water wisely – and we do all we can to encourage our customers to do this too.

We all use water without really thinking about it. Every time we turn on the tap, flush the toilet or put the washing machine on, we’re using a precious and limited resource.

The good news is that by following a few simple measures we can easily cut water wastage, save money and protect the environment.

This is particularly true in the garden. It’s easy to maintain a blooming garden while being water wise!

Here’s our top 10 summer water-saving tips:

Why save water?

If you pay for your water through a meter, your bill may go down.

Less water is taken from the rivers Stour and Avon, which helps our local wildlife during dry spells, when water sources are not being replenished.

Use a bucket instead of a hose to wash your car.

Always water your garden in the early morning or late afternoon as this is when evaporation rates are lowest.

Use mulch and bark in your garden, which can help reduce evaporation by up to 75%.

Water butts are a great way of catching and storing rainwater – which is free! Use your rainwater for watering the garden, washing the car, cleaning paths and windows and topping up ponds (fish prefer rainwater).

Lots of people use bath or dishwater on their gardens.

This is a brilliant idea – but remember it should be used immediately and never on fruit and veg.

Add water-retaining gel to the lower half of compost in planters and hanging baskets.

Adjust your lawnmower to cut your grass longer – this will shade the roots from the sun.

It’s okay if the lawn goes brown, this helps it to build up resistance and recover immediately after rainfall.

Leave grass cuttings on the lawn – they will form a mulch that protects and feeds the grass.

Sprinklers can use as much as 1,000 litres of water per hour!

That’s more than a family of four uses in a whole day. Use a watering can or hose instead.

If you do use a hosepipe, attach a trigger nozzle. This will halve the amount of water you use and help direct the water to the roots of your plants. Don’t forget to turn off at the tap when you’re done.

Shaping Dorset’s Business strategy for the future Dorset Chamber President Liz Willingham speaks to BH Living about her vision for the future and how the Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) are involved in helping to shape a ‘Dorset Industrial Strategy’ BHL: Dorset LEP is currently developing its Local Industrial Strategy (LIS), what types of consultation have you had with them?

LW: In my role as President of Dorset Chamber, I frequently speak to our members about trading conditions, the issues they face, both the opportunities and barriers for businesses and of course the economy in general. Dorset Chamber has also been working closely with Dorset LEP in the Local Industrial Strategy consultation and helping facilitate discussions.

All LEPs have been tasked with pulling together local industrial strategies, plans that will support economic growth in their respective geographical areas. This represents a great opportunity to see how we can both build on our strengths and opportunities but also seek to address barriers to growth and challenges for businesses in Dorset.

BHL: What are the main issues facing businesses in the area?

LW: Probably the number one issue that businesses raise is their challenges in finding staff. With unemployment at its lowest for 45 years, it’s a candidates’ marketplace.

This applies to skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled roles.

Employers repeatedly tell us they cannot fill vacancies.

This is often referred to as a skills shortage. I think it’s also a shortage of people given we have virtually full employment. This means businesses need to work harder to attract and retain good people; this is through pay, terms and conditions, their values as a business and the benefits they offer.

The cost and availability of housing is an important issue within this. Surveys by Dorset Chamber regularly identify that up to 30% of employers state that the cost of housing is a barrier to business growth. Businesses need the staff to move in to Dorset to help their businesses grow – and high housing costs are a barrier to this.

The LIS needs a clear focus on affordable housing solutions.

BHL: The national economy is in a state of worry at the moment, how is this affecting LIS planning?

LW: It’s been a challenging time; we’ve seen growth in the economy at a national level grind to a virtual halt whilst at the same time we are experiencing record employment. Businesses have also been trying to navigate their way around Brexit and in our view, are totally exasperated by the current situation. On a local level, it’s difficult to draw a clear line in the sand on how businesses are doing; some businesses will tell you trade has never been stronger, others report the climate to be challenging.

However it is clear that Dorset businesses are resilient, innovative and adaptable.

BHL: Dorset is an anomaly among counties, offering lots of rural area whilst also hosting plenty of large towns, how will the LIS adapt to this?

LW: The promotion and emphasis of the natural assets of Dorset in both the rural and urban parts of the county, has to be a priority. The quality of life and environment is highly valued within the business community in Dorset just as it is being recognised globally as important in supporting work/life balance and the wellbeing scenario. Dorset is both a fantastic place to work and live.

Interestingly the importance of the value of our natural environment came through very strongly at a recent LIS consultation meeting in a school, where the young people felt it was extremely important to protect the environment and this should not be eroded by over-development.

BHL: Bournemouth hosts two excellent universities and a university college, did this come up in discussions?

LW: There is a widespread concern that we lose many of our talented young people to other areas. Graduate retention is a real problem and young people leave the area when their studies are complete and move to places they may see as more vibrant such as Manchester, Bristol and London.

We need to have a clear focus on strategies to keep these talented young people in the area. A point that has been strongly made within this is the need for improved and exciting cultural activities and leisure attractions, making the area more desirable for young people as opposed to just families and the older generation.

BHL: How is Dorset Chamber helping progress the LIS?

BHL: What improvements could the local area make to become a better place for businesses?

LW: A major focus within the LIS needs to be around sustainable transport solutions for the conurbation. Our road infrastructure is at breaking point and extremely fragile. One accident or roadworks cause incredible congestion making travel, particularly during peak times, a huge problem for employees and business owners alike. It’s difficult to see a real solution to this in terms of the infrastructure. Of course, we need investment in the road network but also in air and rail.

BHL: How can technological advancements better support our economy?

LW: We need to encourage employers to take innovative steps where possible to reduce traffic levels with measures such as home working/ better use of technology and staggered start and finish times. Broadband strength and the application of digitally innovative ways of working should be positioned as a priority to try and counter the castrating road network issues we face.

LW: The Local Industrial Strategy offers us a tremendous opportunity to develop a plan for Dorset that has a focus on addressing these issues, that build on our strengths and offers innovative ideas for addressing our challenges.

Dorset Chamber is supporting Dorset LEP with this consultation and we would encourage all business owners to get involved. Your feedback and ideas around solutions is vital. The next generation of business leaders and their teams will thank us for it.

BHL: How important is reliable access to finance?

LW: Access to finance is often reported as a concern for businesses seeking investment to grow. Businesses that are often sizeable and established with strong credit ratings can often struggle with access to finance through the traditional routes. Whilst the banks will all tell us they are lending, they can be very averse to certain sectors. We aren’t talking about access to finance for a business in financial difficulty; access to finance is often a real challenge for businesses seeking finance to invest in growth, improve capacity, employ more people and improve productivity. There needs to be better financial support for those businesses seeking to drive growth, productivity and employment.

Following this, many businesses in Dorset would benefit from increased support for businesses with real growth potential; support around areas such as strategies for growth, planning, new technologies and access to finance as mentioned.

A funded high-growth support service, focusing on those businesses that have the potential to increase their Gross Value Added (GVA) GVA and increase employment would benefit many businesses in Dorset. A great deal of focus is placed on start-ups and smaller businesses and we would like to see greater emphasis on support for those high-growth potential businesses.

Memories of Poole We wanted to see how much Poole has changed in the last few decades. We hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane!

Before the Norman Conquest Poole was a small fishing village but by the 13th century it had become one of England’s most important ports, earning the right to hold a court in the town and appoint its own mayor.

Henry VI granted Port of the Staple status, making it the foremost port for wool exports in England. Alongside this, fortifications were built that would prove important later.

The town was one of Cromwell’s strongholds during the English Civil War, being staunchly Puritan in a primarily Royalist Dorset. It regularly faced attacks from King Charles’ allies at Corfe Castle but Cromwell’s Parliamentarians won the war and Corfe Castle was left as ruins. After the monarchy was restored Poole’s defences were destroyed by order of King Charles II.

As Britain began to expand its empire, Poole benefited hugely. It did more trade with the newly formed America than any British port. The Industrial Revolution brought further wealth.

Poole was the third largest departure point for the D-Day landings, with eighty-one ships containing US soldiers leaving for Omaha Beach in France. The port later served as an important supply base for the Allied militaries fighting their way through Europe.

If you like fictional serial killer thrillers then this is your holiday read No Spoilers in this review We were just about to go on holiday and a rare occurrence occurred in that I could not find a new release book that really grabbed me. Back at home looking on the book case I saw a book that I had not read, wow, I’m glad I did as I ended up with a week of torment and gripping captivity, literally, with a notorious fictional serial killer.

Karen Rose is a US novelist from Maryland, she has now published 20 novels and writes romance suspense with a horror twist. Die For Me was her seventh book and the first in a trilogy which included Die For Me (2007), Scream For Me (2008) and Kill For Me (2009) Our hero of the day, Detective Ciccotelli, starts the day with one grave, one body and no murder weapon. By the end of the day he has sixteen graves yet only nine bodies. Elsewhere we have a psychotic serial killer who makes the animation for video games. Obsessed with reality, he finds that by filming, as he is murdering his victims, he can record that exact moment of death to create realism in the animation which ensures their video games become the market leader. Medieval torture is his preferred method of execution.

This book has all the key ingredients for a gripping holiday read, likeable characters, places you can relate to, real everyday lives, sex, intrigue and I have to say some very graphic violence. At over 690 pages there is a lot of story but it is a page turner. Enjoy your holiday but be careful with the next email invitation you open from a stranger…

‘Moving with the times is a must’ claims local NHS chief

Changes in local healthcare provision have been making headlines across the BCP region recently, so we caught up with Debbie Fleming, the new CEO of the Royal Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Hospitals, to get the lowdown on what’s going to be happening with our local hospitals.

Debbie greets me with a beaming smile as we step into her office on a rather grey and drab morning and straight away she gives the impression of someone who loves coming into work in the morning. She has a friendly approachable manner about her and is keen to talk from the off. We were keen to know a bit about the woman behind the job first of all.

BHL: So Debbie, you were previously the CEO of Poole Hospital and now you’re the CEO of the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals too!

How did you begin life in the NHS? DF: I’ve been in the NHS for 35 years; my first job was as a management trainee back in 1985 in Poole Hospital. I left the area to continue my training, but I loved Dorset so much I returned again in 1989. In 2006, I became Chief Executive of the Bournemouth and Poole Primary Care Trust [later to evolve into what is now known as the Dorset Clinical Care Group (CCG). CCGs are clinically-led NHS bodies responsible for the planning and commissioning of health care services for their local area.] This role gave me a wider understanding of the healthcare needs of people in our area and also the pressures on healthcare budgets.

I was a PCT chief executive for 12 years, and was previously Area Director for NHS England. In 2014, I became the CEO of Poole Hospital NHS Trust, a job which I really love. More recently, I’ve become the CEO of both Poole Hospital and The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and I consider it to be a real honour to be serving local people in this way.

BHL: What motivates you to come into work on a dull, grey, damp morning like today?

DF: It’s a really really Debbie Fleming busy job with long hours but what motivates me is without doubt to improve things for patients, it’s always a driving force, not least because my family and I use the NHS. We’re all patients or recipients of the healthcare provision at our local hospitals at one time or another. I always seek to provide services in the way that I would like for my 91-year-old mother, my sons, aged 21 and 24, my husband and myself. I believe in the NHS and passionately believe in improving it the best I can for the benefit of our patients.

I love working with people that are passionate about delivering the best healthcare that we possibly can.

I’m also a problem solver and like a challenge and there are certainly many challenges facing us today!

BHL: So what do you think are the challenges facing the NHS today?

DF: I think people would expect me to say ‘funding’ and clearly, this is challenging for all public services. Compared to other public sector bodies, the NHS has been better resourced, but current funding levels cannot keep up with demand. But I guess there will always be things we want to do for which the money just isn’t there.

There are three main challenges facing the NHS as a whole: 1) An aging population; It’s testament to the NHS that we are all living longer but with that comes challenges. We now have to care for a much older population with quite complex needs.

2) Managing public expectations; expectations today are ever increasing and are greater today than when the NHS was formed in 1948. We live in an instant society and have a lot of expectation to live up to. If you asked my 91-year-old Mum, how long she would expect to have to wait for an operation, her answer would probably be very different to my twentysomething son. As the NHS has developed and evolved, more is expected of it.

3) Recruitment; do we have enough doctors, nurses and other allied health professionals? Often we have the money to pay them, but we just can’t secure them. There is a skills shortage across the UK that needs addressing. And it’s not just down to Brexit, which is often reported in the media - the problem is broader than that (although Brexit probably hasn’t helped).

BHL: Are the challenges in our area different to the challenges faced nationally?

DF: The aging population that we’ve just talked about is more apparent here than elsewhere. We live in an area with a higher percentage of elderly people, many of whom have complex needs, and many of those attending our hospitals are very frail indeed. Thirty years ago, the trauma unit would have been full of young lads in motorbike gear; today, our wards are full of older people who’ve had a nasty fall. Additional resources are often needed when caring for elderly or vulnerable people.

We have to be on the front foot all the time to find better ways meet these needs, within the resources available.

BHL: Big challenges! So how are you dealing with them?

DF: Firstly, we have to continue to invest in prevention. We’ve got a really good Dorset wide prevention plan that’s received national recognition. Part of it includes robust screening to identify problems early, but lifestyle changes also make a big difference. Some health problems can be avoided simply by people making the right lifestyle choices. By following the same healthy living advice, we can reduce the risk of dementia, stroke, heart disease…the list goes on.

Secondly, we are also investing much more in ‘out-of-hospital’ care, available seven days a week so we don’t, for instance, end up with people visiting A&E because they can’t access services outside of their GP’s normal opening hours. With all the changes going on in healthcare locally, people are understandably focussed on hospitals because that’s the bit they understand best and can relate to, but the changes are far more wide-reaching than hospitals alone.

BHL: Such as?

Some of the challenges we’re facing can be addressed by linking up different services in a more coherent way and by improving ‘out-of-hospital’ services so that people who could be better cared for outside of hospital don’t find themselves being admitted to hospital with all the upheaval and possible confusion for older patients that that entails.

There are 13 localities across Dorset, where GPs are already working much more closely together, along with community and social care, to deliver services in a far more joined up way.

Local surgeries are working together to extend their opening hours, to provide more robust services for patients. It means people in these areas are benefiting from extended healthcare, provided locally at their point of need, thus reducing the need to visit hospital or access emergency healthcare.

We’re aiming to see more of that joined-up thinking. Wouldn’t it be lovely if someone could access services at a local ‘community hub’ instead of travelling to hospital? Community services are being strengthened and developed across the county, in order to better meet the needs of our population.

BHL: So is that part of ‘the plan’ to have more ‘ community’ beds?

DF: Yes. Most of the current beds are in the west and north of the county at the moment but part of the plan is to increase the number in the east, so we’ll have 72 ‘community beds’ on the Poole Hospital site and 48 ‘community beds’ on the Bournemouth hospital site. These are sometimes called ‘Step up, step down’ beds. People who no longer require acute medical care or someone who needs a period of rehabilitation can be looked after in one of these.

BHL: What about emergency care? There have been many stories in the media about ambulances being delayed and not being able to get people to hospital quickly in an emergency for example – are things improving?

I can understand people being worried. We’ve all heard concerns in recent times about the ambulance service and how much pressure the service has been under. People are worried that if the service is struggling now, what’s it going to be like in five years’ time? But many are probably unaware of the investment and service improvements currently being made and planned in the near future.

NHS I don’t manage the ambulance service, but the South West Ambulance service was fully involved in developing the Dorset plan, and of course, they are part of the joined up approach we’re trying to achieve. Very importantly, the ambulance service is going to benefit from very significant investment over the coming year. In 2020, with these additional resources in place, there will be many more ambulances and paramedic teams on the road.

The service itself has also changed dramatically over the years.

In the ‘old days’, you dialled 999 in an emergency and an ambulance would arrive and hurry you off to hospital where doctors would decide what treatment you needed on arrival.

Nowadays, that’s not always the priority. Paramedics are highly skilled professionals who assess patients themselves and are able to commence treatments. They don’t always need to rush the patient off to hospital.

BHL: Sorry, if I could just interrupt. To some readers, the thought that they’re calling an ambulance that isn’t going to rush them straight to hospital sounds a bit frightening?

DF: Instead of just hurrying to get you to hospital, paramedics now carry out a number of assessments and tests that would previously have been done in hospital. In this way, they are better placed to decide the best course of action. Sometimes that will be to take you to hospital, sometimes it may be that you don’t need to be moved at all, and that another course of action is needed.

The default course in the past was always that if the ambulance crew didn’t know what to do with you, they’d take you off to hospital. We had an instance a few years ago now of an elderly lady who arrived at hospital in an ambulance and ultimately had to be admitted because her cooker had broken down. The ambulance crew responded to the 999 call, couldn’t access any other services and ended up having to bring her to hospital. This is of course a very extreme case but I use it to illustrate the point.

BHL: That’s a bizarre case, how can this kind of thing be avoided in the future?

By providing a range of out-of-hospital services that are all joined up together, it means that the emergency departments aren’t tied up dealing with situations that could be dealt with by another service or provider in the community. By having highly trained paramedics and more of them in the community, we can help to streamline services, make decisions there and then, and get people the help they need, which might not necessarily be in a hospital.

So to address the original question, where there’s concern about the ambulance service and how quickly they respond and how quickly they can get you to hospital, these concerns are being addressed. More paramedic teams being trained and made available. But it’s not always about how quickly they can get you to hospital. Often treatments can be started at the scene of the emergency and through careful assessment, a range of treatments or medical services could be considered in the light of those assessments which hopefully deliver better quality treatment more quickly.

BHL: There have been a lot of reports in the media about the forthcoming changes to the Royal Bournemouth and Poole hospitals and there seems to be a bit of confusion about what the changes are and what they will look like.

Can you reassure our readers, the local residents that the changes are for the best?

People are understandably fearful of change. We sometimes hear the argument “why can’t we leave things as they are?” but that is not an option. By not changing and moving with the times, we will go backwards which is why the proposed changes to our hospitals and healthcare are taking place over the next few years. They are designed to improve healthcare provision for all, not to diminish it or cut services. In fact, we have been allocated additional resources to spend - £147m – to modernise our local healthcare system.

quicker, reducing hospital waiting times and therefore minimising patient anxiety, and all within a more relaxed community setting”.

He mentioned that patients with any ophthalmic concerns can refer themselves into the system by calling Parley Optometrists with details of the problem. They can also be referred via their GP or optometrist they currently use. The practice even take referrals back from the local Eye Unit for monitoring in the community. The practice boasts easy access for disabled patients, with free roadside parking.

The extra services that can now be provided under the NHS include removal of ingrowing eyelashes, dry eye, blepharitis and red eye treatments and management.

Any visual disturbances can be investigated and the team of highly trained professionals are also able to provide Glaucoma diagnosis and management for suitable patients via a telemedicine link to a team of consultant ophthalmologists.

BEWARE OF SCAMMERS

Watch out, watch out there’s a scammer about!

Have you received a call recently from someone pretending to be from BT saying that your service is about to be cut off unless you follow some important instructions?

branches, including Dorset Police. They provide advice on how to identify and counter a scam and reporting facilities for those who have been affected.

Maybe you’ve received an email supposedly from your email provider saying that your account has been compromised and to click on a link to make your account secure again?

In April this year HMRC improved its fraud prevention systems stopping fraudsters from mimicking their recognisable helpline numbers. Since the changes the number of spoofed calls showing a genuine HMRC number has dropped to zero.

This is an important step considering the organisation has reported an enormous increase in reports of malicious callers pretending to be them. In the final six months of 2018 they say 60,000 fake calls imitating them were made, an increase of 360% over the previous six months.

“Don’t assume anyone who calls you is who they say they are. If a person calls and asks you to make a payment, log in to an online account or offers you a deal, be cautious and seek advice.”

This is reflective of a wider recognition of scams with the National Fraud Investigation Bureau (NFIB) reporting that the number of fraud cases reported to them in 2018 increased by 6%.

According to the Office of National Statistics (ONS) over half of the fraud cases reported in 2018 were cybercrimes. There are a few ways that you can spot a scam and it’s important to be aware of the ways in which tricksters are trying to manipulate and extort you out of your money or information.

At the head of the national effort to prevent fraud is Action Fraud, a police organisation that works alongside local

Head of Action Fraud, Pauline Smith gave the following advice: “Fraudsters will call your landline claiming to be from reputable organisations such as HMRC. Contact like this is designed to convince you to hand over valuable personal details or your money.

If you think you have been the victim of a scam contact Action Fraud via their website: www.actionfraud.police.uk.

Phishing emails still remain the most common type of scam. We’ve all received one, from someone pretending to be your bank but spelling your name wrong, insisting that your account is due to be locked. Dorset Police say this is one of the most obvious signs that something is awry, here are their other tips for spotting a scam: Check the email address – is the email from a real address or a random string of letters and numbers?

If it’s the latter, leave it alone. If you still aren’t sure contact the people who are supposedly trying to contact you via a different method such as by phone and see what they say.

Be aware of the email’s tone – does it sound surprisingly urgent? Most companies won’t send you urgent emails telling you that your account is going to be locked without some kind of prior warning. Bear this in mind before you do anything they ask in their email.

Hover over any links – If you hover your mouse over any links in the email then they will show you the actual address that you will be sent to in a small box above the link. If this address looks dodgy then don’t click the link.

New bike sharing scheme arrives with plans for 1000 bikes over the summer There will initially be 50 distinctive green bicycles in 120 bays across the two towns, with plans to ramp numbers up to 1,000 bikes. The majority of the bays are situated near the coast and town centres, with none further north than the university.

Christchurch is not available at launch but discussions are taking place regarding an expansion into the town in the near future.

There is no cost to the tax payer as the Council did not pay for the contract and Beryl is responsible for upkeep of the bikes.

Beryl make money through users paying to use the bikes – if you want to use the bike on pay as you go there is a £1 unlocking fee and a 5p per minute charge. Other options include minute bundles, for every 100 minutes up to 400, and an unlimited 24-hour bundle for £12. If you take the bike outside of the geofence and do not bring it back you will be charged.

Having tried out a bike at the press launch, they offer an agile and quick ride, albeit a slightly firm one. The height of the seat is fully adjustable and there are three gears. There is a platform at the front for strapping on a piece of luggage weighing up to 10kg; front and rear lights frame the bike. A lock on the rear wheel is the primary security feature; and each bike’s location is tracked. There are no plans for a card as of yet meaning you must have a smartphone to use the service.

Philip Ellis, Beryl CEO, believes that the agreed upon five-year contract will provide both parties with the flexibility to improve the service further: “The local authority has a really good vision for how they want to improve cycling in Bournemouth and Poole over the course of the next four or five years. We think that introducing a bike share scheme now as they go on that journey will help us embed a system into the city. Together we can encourage people to cycle more often.”

It is this spirit to get people out of motorised transport and onto bikes that have empowered bike share scheme around the world and with Bournemouth and Poole boasting miles of beach and plans to improve cycling infrastructure now might be the time to ditch your car and cycle instead.

Suggestions for bays were made by the Council. The routes that users take will be tracked to see where is most popular; BCP Council will then use this data to coordinate their infrastructure improvement strategy.

Nick Phillips, Accessibility Team Lead at BCP Council, outlined how this works: “We are shortlisted for the £2.5bn Transforming Cities Fund which is designed to get people out of their cars and travelling sustainably. BCP Council is already mapping the entire main strategic cycle network, following that we are identifying how to get segregated cycle ways, because that is what people

Aled Jones & Russell Watson ‘In Harmony’ Tour coming to Bournemouth BH Living talk exclusively to Aled Jones and Russell Watson who are bringing their ‘In Harmony’ tour to Bournemouth this September. With a live orchestra, and stunning vocals from the duo, Aled promises it will be “a pretty big show”.

Aled, you’ve been friends with Russell for about 20 years – how did you first meet and how did you then decide to do an album together?

You’ve not done much together before this, were you worried that the album ‘In Harmony’ wouldn’t actually be in harmony?

We bumped into each other back stage at the Royal Albert Hall, it was one of his first concerts. We hit it off, joked a lot, had good fun, and then just kept in touch throughout the years. Invariably we’d be on the same bill, or the same television shows. And then Russell got voted the best selling male artist in Classic FM’s 25 year history, so I sent him a begrudging text saying ‘Well Done!’. Then he said we should do something. Move forward three months and we’re making an album. It was such an easy thing to do. We sent each other a couple of e-mails with what songs we’d like to do, on his list were some of the ones that were on mine, so it was a no brainer.

Thinking back on it now I can’t believe how much trust the record label had in us, because we’d never sung together before. So there was no guarantee that our voices would even go together. I remember being in Australia when the first edits came through and just being so overjoyed, and sometimes you can’t even tell who’s singing, whether it’s me or Russell. We have such different voices, he’s very loud and operatic and I’m more lyrical, so on paper you would not put us down as being compatible but it’s worked a treat.

INTERVIEW Are there any songs on the album that are your particular favourites or any that are significant?

‘May the Good Lord Bless You and Keep You’ is an absolute gorgeous blessing, I’d never sung that before and it’s become one of my favourite pieces I think. There’s also the Welsh song [Cylfan Y Coed] which means a great deal to me, I’ve sung it many times around the house since growing up. Other than that, they are all significant to Russell and I. We wanted it to be a very personal album, and the music couldn’t have been easier for us to put together because they are songs that we’ve loved. I love ‘Where Have All The Flowers Gone’, I love ‘Here’s To The Heroes’, and it was my idea to put them together thinking it would work as a medley, and it really did, it’s really powerful.

Speaking of ‘Where Have All The Flowers Gone/Here’s To The Heroes’, significant because of recent World War 1 commemorations, are there times when you feel overwhelming emotions when singing some of these songs?

When I’m singing with Russ it’s definitely a very powerful experience, but that’s exactly what I wanted. I wanted my kind of quiet, heartfelt, lyrical start, to then go into Russell

doing what he does best which is this huge wall of noise.

And standing next to him when he is doing that, he is very impressive. It happens [Tears], but not very often because I have to be a professional as well. But every piece of music I sing has some sort of effect on me, otherwise I probably couldn’t do it.

So your tour is coming to Bournemouth on 30th September, do you have a special message for your Bournemouth fans?

Just come along and have fun, it’ll be great to see the place full. Russell and I are definitely going to have a lot of fun on stage, so undoubtedly that’ll go out into the audience. There might be a few surprises along the way as well!

Disc two brings us her music in which she duets with many artists including Don Henley, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The standout track for me on disc 2 was “You’re not the one” which she recorded with Sheryl Crow.

With disc three, we get many of her ‘live in concert’ tracks with a great version of “Dreams”. We’re also offered something a bit different with “Landslide” accompanied by The

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra which she performs exquisitely.

Fans of Stevie Nicks will undoubtedly love the album. It could also be a valued addition to the music collection for those who may just know the name but want to discover more. Be warned though, it’s not all ‘easy listening’. There are some tracks which really expose the true Stevie Nicks but which may also only suit ‘an acquired taste’. it contains 50 tracks of great music whether you are enjoying music to drive by or are looking for some lazy Sunday afternoon music.
