Welcome!

Dear Friends and Supporters of Lewis-Manning

As you know since May last year we have had bedrooms open for short and longer stays for patients attending LewisManning. This “respite” support has proven invaluable to both patients and carers, but alongside that it has been the most wonderful opportunity for the team to get used to utilising the building for overnight care, and all the details and processes around this.

Following continued effort from the whole team and improvements in our financial position the Trust board are now able to commit to the full opening of the in patient unit.

Some elements of the income we will rely on for this final phase is dependant on legacy income and timings, but the board are confident that the monies will materialise to allow us to open next year.

We will therefore be opening bedrooms for end of life care which is wonderful news for everyone. Recruitment is an absolutely vital component and we all know that there is a real shortage of high calibre nurses locally (and nationally), so we will do all we can to ensure that we communicate what a great place Lewis-Manning is to work and how exceptional the care of patients is. For nurses having “time to care” is such an important element of their satisfaction in giving patients the best care possible.

By providing end of life care here we will be more than doubling our costs. Your continued support into the future will be even more vital than ever. We are increasing our own fundraising efforts by investing in the ability to generate voluntary income. I am working with our commissioners, the Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group, to ensure that we are being supported appropriately by the NHS, however more than 70% of our costs now and into the future will come from the community, grant making trusts, legacies, and our own fundraising.

We cannot offer help to 700 patients each year now and more than 1,000 each year when the beds are fully open without your continued help and support. I am grateful to each and every one of you.

NEWS New Recruits

A warm welcome to Megan Wilkins and David James who both joined the hospice fundraising team during the summer.

David joins as Corporate Relationship Fundraiser having previously worked for Naomi House Children’s Hospice near Winchester and prior to that for a Salisbury based charity called Hope and Homes for Children, while Megan, who is originally from Reading, is currently a third year BA Marketing and Communications student studying at Bournemouth University and has joined Lewis-Manning for a 40 week placement as Marketing and Fundraising Assistant.

HM Lord-Lieutenant for Dorset, Mr Angus Campbell was recently welcomed by Elizabeth Purcell for a visit.

He spent time touring the building, meeting the patients and the staff and hearing about all our exciting service developments. He was accompanied by Mrs Marilyn Porter MVO from the Lieutenancy Office in Dorchester.

Thank you to everyone who came and supported our annual Vintage Garden Party, helping to raise over £2,000.

Sponsored by Richmond Home Improvement Co, the event was compered by Steve Harris from BBC Radio Solent Breakfast Show, who is also a board member at Lewis-Manning, and he introduced live music from the 40’s and 50’s provided by Real Vintage featuring G.I 45 and Memphis Belle, who were also joined by dancers from Jitterbugjive The Bournemouth Lindy Hop Club.

Guests were able to browse amongst the arts and crafts fair with homemade cakes, plants, books and children’s games and the ever popular annual Dog Show returned with Keith Baker from Lions Club of Poole as judge.

Staff fundraising A number of staff members have been busy over summer taking part in some rather daring and strenuous fundraising activities.

Paige Peall, who recently returned to university after a 40 week placement as a student intern, Skydived from 15,000 ft along with her younger sister, while Maria Tidy and Paul Tucker abseiled 100 metres down Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower.

Meanwhile, Roz from our Better Breathing Clinic, decided to remain on Terra Firma and instead cycled 102kms from Southampton to Poole as part of the Great Tour of Britain.

We are looking for someone who can lend us an electric keyboard for our pianist to use for a couple of hours to accompany our annual Light Up a Life celebrations in the grounds of the hospice (see page 11).

Hospice Life

Garden fun Despite some unpredictable weather, the patients enjoyed a week of fun activities in the garden during August organised by Sally Church and Day Hospice Team.

Using both the marquee and outside space for a wide range of activities, including the very popular hook a duck game and even outdoor snooker, everyone thoroughly enjoyed being in the garden and there was plenty of laughter throughout the week.

Mindfulness

New View

Our patients and staff recently took part in a Mindfulness taster session in preparation for the introduction of an eight week programme this autumn.

Attendees from our most recent New View programme, which is a course providing encouragement and support to patients following treatment for Head and Neck cancer, gathered together to celebrate the end of a successful six week programme led by Dr Simon Pennell.

Mindfulness is a form of meditation that cultivates awareness of the present moment and can help us to move towards greater levels of health and wellbeing.

Participation can produce lasting benefits such as an improved ability to cope more effectively with both short and long-term stressful situations and an increased ability to relax and experience calm, as well as creating greater energy and enthusiasm for life, resulting in an improved self-confidence.

Each week the 2 ½ hour classes will consist of mindfulness meditation, gentle movement and cognitive exercises, which are all known to benefit people with a wide range of physical and emotional difficulties.

The Mindfulness sessions will be led by Penny Nicholas, who is well known to Lewis-Manning, having provided Mindfulness tuition on a number of courses and for the staff. Penny has worked in this field of personal development for over 10 years having trained in this discipline through Bangor University. Penny is currently working as a supervisor and mentor for Exeter University.

Make a difference to someone’s life today.

When the phone rings and it is the HM Lord Lieutenant of Dorset’s Office one’s heart starts to race! On being asked if I would like an invitation to a Royal Garden Party on 20th May I first felt nervous, then honoured and then “Oh goodness what shall I wear”; all in the space of 30 seconds!

This was at the end of January and it was explained that, if the recommendation was accepted, I would hear nearer the time. In March I had a letter confirming that I, together with a guest, would receive an invitation about six weeks before the due date. Taking a guest presented something of a problem, my husband was not well enough to accompany me and I knew that at that time I should be in a wheel chair and unable to help myself following a major surgery on my foot and would need a “carer”. A friend of many years standing agreed to come with me and do all the caring that would inevitably be necessary.

As she also helps raise funds for Lewis-Manning and previously helped raise many thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK I felt it was appropriate to ask her.

20th May came and we were driven up to London and as registered disabled given privileged parking right opposite Buckingham Palace. We were to enter by a side gate which would not entail climbing any steps.

Sadly this meant we were not able to go through the glorious rooms and enter the garden via the steps from the terrace as were the more able guests. We did have a laugh however because, as soon as we entered the grounds we were confronted by three corgis, I couldn’t resist turning to my companion and saying “we have come to the right place then”.

Security was very tight and we had to produce both passports and driving licences, having been security checked even before the invitation was issued. There were some really elegant outfits but nothing outlandish with all the ladies wearing hats which the invitation said were mandatory. Because I had been house bound my friend had gone round all the shops of Poole and Bournemouth to find me a suitable hat – true friendship.

Quite a few of the gentlemen were in morning dress whilst others wore uniform. The Archbishop of Canterbury and other senior clerics were walking around in their red robes.

Guests were invited to explore the grounds but we were somewhat restricted by my wheelchair so we found a

table fairly near to the huge tea tent. There we were joined by several interesting people also involved with charities, all were agreed on the difficulties and importance of fundraising. The tea was fantastic with a delicious variety of sandwiches, wraps, little pastries and cakes everything being of “one bite” size. At the end ice creams were brought round.

Her Majesty arrived, looking as elegant as ever in a cream coat dress and hat, together with Prince Philip, the Duke of York and Princess Alexandra, they had been preceded by Yeomen of the Guard after the playing of the National Anthem. Equerries were walking among the lines of guests talking to those who had been selected to speak with the Queen. I was not one of those favoured which was a waste of all the weeks of practising I had been doing of “Mam as in Jam” not “Marm as in arm”! I had a front row view of HM and admired how quickly she put the guests at ease laughing and chatting with them.

Following her were three gentlemen and three of her Ladies in Waiting. I asked one of the gentlemen what his role was and he admitted that they were part of the Queen’s bodyguard. I found it very sad that she needed the protection of bodyguards in her own “back garden”.

One of the equerries came to talk to me and I asked if the Countess of Wessex was present, she wasn’t but he was interested as to why I had asked and I explained how much her visit last year had meant to patients and staff of Lewis-Manning. I was able to update him on our latest advances including patients staying overnight and he said that he would see that this was passed on to her.

We had received written instructions asking us not to take photographs so we didn’t take cameras with us, which proved to be a shame because I noticed some people were sneakily taking pictures, although NOT of HM. One lady near me tried and the bodyguard’s top hat was over her camera before you could blink! I do have a DVD of the actual day and the work leading up to the invitations going out. This will always provide a reminder of a special day.

A wonderful day, full of memories and we felt extremely honoured and privileged to have been invited. The organisation from the first phone call to the end of the day was perfect in every detail.

One of our first Gift Aid customers helping to make the most of the money we’re raising

It’s been an exciting year in many ways for retail. Not only have we seen the introduction of a whole new Epos system and the ability to reclaim Gift Aid, but we have many new faces with us too.

In March 2015 the first Epos till installation was completed and retail went ‘live’ with the ability to reclaim Gift Aid – a government scheme that allows us to reclaim 25p in addition to each £1 we sell donated items for, if the donor is a UK tax payer. The retail team have been truly fantastic in their uptake of the Gift Aid scheme.

Since its introduction we have accumulated an additional £16,000 of Gift Aid sales reclaim, and have gained an amazing 1300 Gift Aid supporters. Their hard work and dedication to the Hospice has been a fantastic motivation to the team’s success. It’s great to see all of that hard work paying off, and more money being provided to support the care of patients.

We are really pleased to also have new team members having joined us throughout the year; all bringing with them a wealth of experience and knowledge.

‘Challenge Laura’

Moving into November we are now looking at specific locations and how we can improve the look and feel of our branches for our customers, volunteers and staff. We will be completing two ‘refits’ in November – or more specifically two DIY SOS projects, for people of the 90’s – Challenge Anneka! …or ‘Challenge Laura’ in this case!

Both our Ashley Cross and Ferndown branches will be receiving make overs, but true to ourselves – we are trying to keep costs to an absolute minimum so that our profits are saved for those who need them most; our patients.

We’ll be doing this by asking people in the local communities to get involved and support us by volunteering – if you can paint a wall, hang some wall paper, put some frames up, make tea and coffee or just make us giggle through it all – it would be great to hear from you.

Last year we did this in our Wimborne branch, for a total of £238. Since then the shops takings and therefore contributions to the hospice have dramatically increased. Jean is a Deputy Sister in the In-Patient Unit here at Lewis Manning. In March she visited two hospices in Romania, one in Bucharest and the other in Brasov. Here she talks about her visit, describing her experiences and highlighting the differences in care between the Romania and the UK. So Jean, tell me how you came to be visiting Romanian hospices.

A few years ago I was working with Dr Simon (Pennell) at the Macmillan Unit in Christchurch. He had been out working in Romania for several months and was sharing his experiences with me and told me of the work of Hospices of Hope. Hospices of Hope are a Kent based charity who have developed hospice care in Eastern European countries over the last 20 years. I really felt that I wanted to experience hospice care in Romania for myself.

So when did you first go over?

In January 2013 I turned 40 and wanted to do something to make a difference to other people’s lives. I had a 40th birthday party and asked people to donate money for me to spend on supplies for my trip. We raised £2,000 on that night! A couple of days later, I flew out to Bucharest for two weeks and took money and supplies with me.

How were you able to help the hospices out there?

I was given an opportunity to do some training with the staff in both Bucharest and Brasov around lifting and handling. They were lifting patients with no aids whatsoever. I was able to take slide sheets for them to use and trained them in using them. I also introduced them to a reflective learning tool. Whilst there I was able to stock the hospice with pads, dressings, nappies and wipes. The people were so warm and kind. The nurses were full of dedication and compassion. When I returned home I bought more lifting aids and sent them out. I continued to think of ways I could help them.

So what did you do?

There is so much waste in the NHS. When patients pass away equipment and unopened supplies cannot be reused. I checked with my manager at the time and arranged for any donated items to be kept and then sent them out in a lorry at the end of the year.

So what took you back this March?

Well it had been 2 years since my last visit and one of

my former colleagues from the Macmillan unit had shown an interest in going so we decided to go together.

This trip was only for 5 days so we were a little limited in what we could do.

So what did you do this time?

Even though it was a short visit we did manage to go out with both the adult and paediatric community teams and visited the Marie Curie Children’s hospital. We visited the hospice in Brasov for one day and did some more lifting and handling training. We also got talked into doing some filming!! They videoed our lifting and handling techniques and are producing a video to go on the national palliative care teaching website in Romania. It will be a resource for both professionals and carers.

Can you explain the differences you saw between hospice care here and out in Romania?

The kinds of patients they have are slightly different as a lot of patients are diagnosed very late in their disease. So we saw patients who, if they had lived in the UK would’ve been diagnosed earlier and may not have ended up being palliative. There is neither the funding nor the expertise required for diagnostics in Romania. The rich people can afford the care but the poor definitely suffer more. There appeared to be more childhood cancers. There were more lung cancer patients (the Romanians like to smoke and do not really fully understanding the dangers of doing so).

Hospices and hospitals in the UK are so well equipped and staffed. In Romania there is very basic equipment and supplies. The nurses do amazingly well given that they have so little resources.

Will you go out again?

Oh yes I’m sure I will. I’m not sure when yet. The Bucharest team have just opened their first in patient unit which is very exciting. We stayed in the new hospice whilst there but it wasn’t open. Since our return they have received funding from the House of Insurance in Romania, so they are now open to take patients. I would love to go out and see how the service is developing but for now my energies are channelled into developing our own services here at Lewis Manning Hospice.

A therapeutic healing garden is one which engages all of the senses with the environment so as to increase feelings of well-being and reduce anxiety, stress and pain. It is a critical part of hospice care and is an important component for many therapies including art, exercise and meditation. The outside world, especially with a view such as ours, is also a place of spiritual connection for many people, a crucial part of holistic care.

Our garden has to be able to serve a number of purposes and in preparation for opening 24/7 we are turning our attention to it. First and foremost it must be a place of “healing” in its widest sense with secluded areas allowing privacy and security whilst also providing a place for people to gather and socialise, and at the same time providing an opportunity for reflection and spirituality.

We have been working with a healing garden designer to create that therapeutic space and we have been inspired by gardens such as Horatio’s Garden at the spinal unit of Salisbury Hospital. The Lewis-Manning garden will provide a multi-sensory experience using colourful and fragrant flowers and herbs, with elements to catch the eye and ear such as running water and ornamental grasses, as well as areas to attract wildlife.

Within the garden will be calming, soothing, beautiful water features flowing out towards the sea. The gently curving paths will offer an opportunity for physical exercise and allow for choices as to which direction and which view to enjoy whilst breathing in the fresh sea air. The heated summer house provides an excellent stopping point to enjoy the sea view, to paint a landscape, to hold a private conversation or for spiritual reflection.

be a place in our garden for people to gather. The gathering space needs to be slightly away from the inpatient rooms for groups to gather before and after an activity such as Nordic walking, cycling, yoga and tai chi. A decked area could provide the platform for a warm up or group exercise session with some appropriate seating. And this area could also form the hub for events such as our annual ‘Light Up A Life’ event. But that is in phase two!

For now, the plan is to form a steering group to help bring phase 1 of this garden into being and to take account of all the different perspectives its users will have. We have already talked to our volunteer gardeners who are excited about the project and looking forward to getting involved in its manifestation. We will need the support of the community to make this happen and over the coming weeks and months we will be engaging with people who might be able to help us. If you are one of those people and can offer landscaping, construction or gardening help do please let us know. In the meantime we look forward to some fine weather once the work gets under way and we are preparing ourselves for the ground works before the fun of planting can start.

With each bedroom having its own access to the garden and with beds being easily moved outside, it will feel as though the garden extends inwards through a private and more secluded area.

In the open areas, people will be able to take part in group activities, such as Thai Chi and Chi Gong, just as participants on our New View courses have already enjoyed.

Gardens can encourage social interaction and we know that social isolation is a problem in our society. So for the longer term we want there to

Forthcoming Events November 27th Light Up a Life

Our annual Light up a Life service, which is a special opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives our loved ones, will be taking place in the hospice grounds overlooking Poole Harbour and is open to everyone not just those whose loved ones were cared for at a hospice.

Starts 7pm

We shall be preceding the service with a candle lit walk from Sandbanks, along the waterside and up to the hospice for those who would like to take part. Candles and lanterns will be provided in return for a small donation.

Walkers will leave Sandbanks at 6.00pm and make their way along the seafront and up to the hospice to join the main service which starts 7pm.

The ceremony will include singing, prayers, poems and readings and will end with mince pies and mulled wine, after which the candle lit procession will return back to Sandbanks.
