Local charity takes on local community centre Prama, the Dorset care charity, recently agreed to reopen and take forward the much-loved Barrington Community Centre and Theatre in Ferndown. The welcome decision comes after a period of uncertainty for the centre which had been forced to close its doors and ensures that the Barrington will continue to provide much valued facilities for the community.
Prama is a local charity which offers care for older people, people with dementia and carers. In addition to home care support, Prama also provide day services, clubs and activities to encourage people to meet, socialise and prevent loneliness. The services provided by the Barrington are well matched with Prama’s work.
Steve Robinson, Prama’s CEO said: “I‘m delighted that Prama is able to support the community of Ferndown and facilitate this wonderful centre’s future. Many local clubs and societies meet at the Barrington, which is at the heart of the local community, and we want to see this thrive and grow. Although many will know Prama as a charity that primarily provides care to older people, I can assure everyone that we will be supporting the Barrington to be a community centre for all ages.” The council is working with Prama to reassign the lease and revenue grant and ensure the Barrington Centre continues to be enjoyed by local residents. We will also be carrying out an energy efficiency survey in the near future to look at ways in which running costs associated with the building could be reduced. For information on news and events at the Barrington Centre visit www.thebarrington.online.

Council Budget
Council Budget 2017/18 The council’s budget for local services in East Dorset was approved in February. Local services are funded by a combination of government grants, business rates, Council Tax, service fees and charges, and other income. The total budget for 2017/18 is £33m. The district council’s element of the Council Tax bill is to increase by £5 for a Band D property, which is just under 10p per week. This means that the annual charge for East Dorset’s element of Council Tax for a Band D property from 1 April 2017 will be £212.32. Despite the ongoing and significant reduction in funding from Central Government the council remains committed to delivering the valued services it does to residents without the need to increase council tax beyond the Government’s referendum threshold. By 2018 the council will no longer receive any core revenue funding from Central Government. However, we will ensure that further efficiencies are identified to protect future service delivery. To achieve this we will need to change the way we work across all services whilst continuing to protect vital local services and deliver our priorities in the years ahead.
Your Council Tax explained As well as a proportion going to East Dorset District Council, the total Council Tax you pay is also required by Dorset County Council, Dorset Police, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Authority, and local Town and Parish Councils. In total the annual average charge for Council Tax for a Band D property in East Dorset from 1 April 2017 is £1,860.79. This represents an increase of 4.40 per cent from 2016/17 Below you can see the Council Tax for a Band D property from 1 April 2017. The amount of Council Tax you will pay varies depending upon which Council Tax band your home is in. You can view charges for all bands at dorsetforyou.gov. uk/counciltax. Your full Council Tax charge will be set out in your Council Tax bill.

Would you travel over 300 miles or to another country to see your optician? Local Opticians Parley Optometrists have built a reputation for clinical expertise and advanced eye-care, but are they so special that you should make a special journey? Clearly a lot of people think so, as they boast a client database including some that travel from Cornwall, Wales, the Midlands, Teeside and even France, Cypress and Australia! They have won or been short listed for no less than fifteen national Optician Awards, and continue to invest heavily in state of the art technology for the benefit of their patients. Having recently undergone a major re-fit and taken extra staff, this growing practice is able to offer patients an even better service. The highly experienced clinical team includes Noreen Boyd who amongst other things has volunteered for the charity “vision aid overseas” and also contact lens specialist Lisa Pipe, who also specialises in diabetic screening.
Director and also senior optometrist at Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Rob Jones explains: “The importance of a good team cannot be underestimated, especially if we want to continue to exceed our patients expectations”. With this in mind, Parley Optometrists have recruited some of the best local optometrists in the area so that patients can continue to benefit from first-class eye care. The practice was one of the first in the UK to offer 3D retinal scanning or Optical Coherence Tomography, and offers a range of different services above and beyond what is usually available on the high street, whilst also offering the usual range of products to suit those with designer tastes or those on a tight budget. You don’t need an eye examination to see why people travel from far and wide to access this level of service....and it happens to be on your doorstep!

Local Government Reorganisation
Secretary of State to decide on Future Dorset East Dorset District Council, along with the other councils in Dorset, is currently waiting for a decision from the Secretary of State Rt. Hon. Sajid Javid MP on the Future Dorset submission for local government reorganisation submitted by six of the nine councils in February 2017. Three councils, East Dorset, Christchurch Borough Council and Purbeck District Council, voted in January not to be part of the submission. East Dorset District Council is awaiting the decision of the Secretary of State before deciding the best way forward. His ‘minded to’ decision was expected by the end of March so may well have been announced by the time you read your copy of East Dorset News

A Day In The Life
. . . f o e f i l e h t A day in Hannah Bosence Countryside Engagement Officer What does your job involve? All sorts! I’m very lucky that my work is so varied, and no two days are ever the same. My job covers everything from leading volunteer groups, to school visits, to evening talks for adults. I need to be pretty talkative and get people out enjoying our countryside.
What does a typical day involve? These last few months I have spent a lot of time out on sites doing practical work with our conservation volunteers who are invaluable in helping us look after our
Nature Reserves, even when the weather might not be the best. As we enter bird nesting season, and the warmer weather is on its way, my focus turns more towards education, and showing off our sites in all their glory.
What are looking forward to this year? The summer as it involves a variety of events taking place on our Nature Reserves, from Nuts About Nature Sessions for the little ones, Early Bird Dawn Chorus Walks for adults, and our ever popular wildlife colouring competition for kids of all ages. There is of course a fair amount of office time required to balance out all this fresh air. I consider myself very lucky that I enjoy my work so much. If anyone wants to join me digging muddy ditches and litter picking in the rain, you’re always welcome. For more information on the work of the Countryside Team, upcoming events or anything else, please look up Christchurch & East Dorset Countryside on Facebook, or email countryside@christchurchandeastdorset.gov.uk

What a difference a day makes Transform your conservatory in less than a day with our insulated roof panels “The Green Space roof has totally transformed a pretty useless conservatory into a useful additional room.” Wendy Thomas, Wareham, Dorset.
What a difference a day makes Is your conservatory too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer? Did you know that in 2010 the planning laws were relaxed and in the majority of cases, you can now fit a solid roof to your conservatory without planning permission. This means better insulation, keeping the room warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, and a room that you can use all year round. Green Space Ltd specialise in transforming conservatories. Using lightweight roof panels, they offer eight times better insulation than a polycarbonate roof and with U-values of 0.29, they will keep your conservatory at a comfortable temperature all year round. Transform your conservatory in one day - contact Green Space on 01202 355780 or visit them online at: www.greenspaceconservatories.co.uk.

CARE SOUTH IS A LEADING PROVIDER OF RESIDENTIAL AND HOME CARE ACROSS DORSET
What our clients say For the 36 years of operating my practice all projects have been finished with full Building Regulations Approval – giving successful results for the many individual building owners and companies. No doubt the department will continue to give the same dedicated service in the future to building owners and their chosen architects, surveyors and building contractors.” Eric Lewis - Building Surveyor, Wimborne We find Building Control to be efficient, approachable and competitive. Their staff are always helpful and knowledgeable and, where possible, try to arrange early site visits without delay. Although we have used various private contractors for building control, we still think that East Dorset District Council has the competitive edge and have no hesitation in recommending them to our clients.” Glyn Bagley - Glyn Bagley Building Contractors Ltd @cb_edd_councils
