Leader’s Message

In This Edition

Councillor Spencer Flower

As we approach Christmas it is a time to reflect on the true spirit of the season. A time when we should be thinking about our faith, about peace, goodwill and giving, and of course looking forward to enjoying time with family and friends. We live in a great part of the country with a strong local economy and our community enjoys relatively good health by comparison with other parts of the country. It is a time also to reflect on the debt of gratitude we surely have to those who give up their own time throughout the year to help others in our community and indeed across the country. We cannot take these sentiments for granted. I hope that we will all reflect over Christmas on what we can each individually do to make where we live better and the lives of those around us more fulfilled. East Dorset District Council still faces challenges in the year ahead. We have been successful in retaining our frontline services, despite the financial pressures during the past few years of austerity. Our partnership with Christchurch has been a great success, but more needs to be done to deal with known future reductions in funding and anticipated service demands.

When going to print we still await a decision from the Secretary of State about a radical reorganisation of Local Government in Dorset. Whatever the decision, for me the most important consideration is we continue to do what is in the best interests of the communities we serve. Have a great Christmas and a happy New Year! 

Top tips for your turkey this Christmas Here are some tips from our Public Health team on how to prepare, cook and store your Christmas turkey

Preparation

Cooking

Storing and using leftovers

If you buy a frozen turkey defrost the bird fully before you cook it. Remove giblets (if present) as soon as you can to help speed up defrosting. Put the bird in a deep dish to hold thawing liquids – these should be poured away without splashing worktops or cloths as this can spread bacteria. Don’t wash your turkey – this may spread bacteria around, which would otherwise be killed off during cooking. After touching raw poultry always wash your hands.

Where available, follow cooking instructions on the pack. As a general guide preheat your oven to 180oC (350oF, gas mark 4) and allow between 35-45 minutes cooking time per kilo, depending on the weight of your turkey.

Cool any leftovers as quickly as possible (within 90 minutes), cover them and put them in the fridge. If you're putting leftovers in the freezer, you could divide them into portions so you can defrost only as much as you need. If you're reheating leftover turkey or other food, always make sure it's steaming hot all the way through before you eat it. Don't reheat food more than once and ideally use leftovers within 48-hours 

Three ways you can tell a turkey is cooked: •

The meat is steaming hot all the way through

•

There's no pink meat when you cut into the thickest part of the bird

•

The juices run clear when you pierce the turkey or press the thigh @cb_edd_councils

Christmas recycling Most of us produce extra waste over Christmas, but much of it can be recycled using your Recycle for Dorset service. Remember that you can recycle:

Recycle your tree

• wrapping paper (not foil or glittery paper, please)

Don’t forget you can recycle your real Christmas tree by cutting it up and putting it in your garden waste bin if you have one, or by taking it to a household recycling centre.

• cardboard boxes and packaging

The Dorset Waste Partnership can no longer collect your real Christmas tree if it’s left whole at the kerbside. Alternatively, you may be able to book a Christmas tree collection with a Dorset-based charity. Find a list of participating organisations at www.dorsetforyou.gov.uk/ christmas-trees  6

Dorset Area Councils Joint Committee gets to work The Dorset Area Joint Committee, made up of representatives of six of the nine Dorset councils, including East Dorset, has started cross-council discussions on the future of council services in Dorset. The committee, including councillors from Dorset County Council, East Dorset District Council, North Dorset District Council, Purbeck District Council, West Dorset District Council and Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, elected Cllr Rebecca Knox, Leader of Dorset County Council as Chairman at its first meeting. Cllr Anthony Alford, Leader of West Dorset District Council, was elected as Vice-Chair. Of the six councils that are represented on the committee, two of them, East Dorset District Council and Purbeck District Council, decided earlier this year not to support the ‘Future Dorset’ proposal which seeks to reduce the nine current councils in Dorset to two unitary authorities.

Let's keep crime down

this Christmas

While all of Dorset’s councils continue to await a decision from Central Government on ’Future Dorset’, the committee will look to find solutions to the shared challenge that all councils face: to continue to deliver valued public services against a background of declining resources. More information about the Joint Committee, including meeting agendas and latest news can be found at www.dorsetareacouncils.wordpress.com. To follow live updates during committee meetings follow @DorsetAreaJC on Twitter 

We are very lucky that levels of crime and anti-social behaviour within Christchurch and East Dorset are low, but it is important that you remain vigilant and take measures to ensure you do not become a victim of crime this Christmas.

Hints and tips make sure your car is locked when you go Christmas shopping and do not leave your purchases in view make sure you lock all side and back gates and ensure windows are securely shut

fit exterior lights, that come on at night, to cover the sides and back of your property put all your tools away so they cannot be used to break into your house and lock your garage or shed with proper security locks if you are going away this Christmas make your home look

like somebody is living in it. Don’t close your curtains – in daytime it shows the house is empty. Use automatic timerswitches to turn your lights on when it goes dark ask a neighbour to check on your property if you are going away this Christmas

Apprenticeship updates for local businesses The Economic Development Team at Christchurch and East Dorset Councils hosted two Apprenticeship Levy Update Seminars recently. The events followed on from the success of the Apprenticeship Levy Seminars the team delivered earlier this year which highlighted the benefits of apprenticeships and introduced the levy to employers. The events took place at Queen Elizabeth School, Wimborne and Curtiss-Wright at Bournemouth Airport. Representatives from Skills and Learning BDP and Bournemouth and Poole College gave presentations on the apprenticeship scheme. Delegates also heard from employers who have successfully introduced an apprenticeship programme and implemented the levy and from apprentices currently on an apprenticeship. Freya Kendall is studying for a Level 3 Diploma in Business Administration with Skills and Learning BDP and Sophie McLaren is a Digital Marketing and Social Media Apprentice

with Christchurch and East Dorset Councils. Both discussed the benefits of studying and working on an apprenticeship programme. Freya said: “My apprenticeship has allowed me to not only start earning whilst I’m gaining a qualification but, I feel as though I am gaining valuable experience, knowledge and employability skills that I couldn’t get from anything other than an apprenticeship. I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone.” Sophie added: “My experience as an apprentice has been really positive so far. No two days have been the same and I’ve learnt so much in a short space of time.” To find out more about how the Economic Development Team support businesses, schools and other organisations across Christchurch and East Dorset email the team at economy@christchurchandeastdorset.gov.uk or follow us on Twitter @CEDCBusiness 

New year, new you

New year, new you It’s that time of year when lots of people make a New Year’s resolution to increase their activity levels or get a bit fitter. Regular activity contributes to a healthy lifestyle so the trick is to maintain your initial enthusiasm and ensure you make getting out and about part of your routine. So, if you are reading this and thinking you’d like to be more active, perhaps we can help out? The Active 4 Health Partnership aims to encourage local people across Christchurch and East Dorset to get, and keep, active through a wide range of activities to suit location, interest and health need. With hundreds of weekly opportunities, both indoors and out, we’re here to help you take the first steps towards a more active lifestyle. The Activate Coast and Countryside activity programme is one such opportunity, which focuses on getting people active in local green space. There are some great ideas for local people to get involved with, no matter what your current level of fitness. But whatever you are thinking about doing, there are often barriers that hinder you. We offer activities that can help overcome some of those.

Nordic Walking at Kingston Lacy

We offer 17 weekly health walks across Christchurch and East Dorset, from Corfe Mullen to West Parley and Mudeford to Highcliffe. They are all free and led by trained, friendly volunteers. Our walks are 30-60 minutes in length, are close to public transport links and they all finish at a venue where you can chat over a cuppa. Everyone has to start somewhere. It’s just finding what suits you and your lifestyle so that you keep doing it. Other options include: referral ambles, one-to-one cycle tuition, health cycle rides, night cycling, beginners running, ‘Couch to 5k’ running and Nordic Walking. Just turn up and we’ll take care of the rest for you 

New year, new you

Gareth’s story Having retired early, at the age of 56, I gave myself a target to learn to ride a bike. Finding someone to teach me proved tricky but after some research, in the new free time I had, I found a programme of one-to-one training run by Marc Thompson based at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest. I wasn’t sure what to expect but much to my surprise at the end of the first lesson I was actually able to ride unaided and over the next two lessons we gradually extended the distances. Marc had great patience and showed understanding of the complete fear an adult faces when learning something new, which is completely different to that of a child. Over the next five months I slowly improved my skills by building up the miles. Through cycling, I have discovered parts of Dorset and Hampshire I never knew existed and have met some very nice people along the way. Sure, I have had a few knocks and spills, but it’s all part of the learning curve. Six months after after I finished my course with Marc, I took part in, and completed, a 60-mile cycle event. I guess you could say I have now caught the cycling bug and my next target is to do 100 miles. I would have never achieved so much without taking that first step all those months ago. I’m now fitter and healthier thanks to my new hobby.

Gareth doing the Wiggle New Fore st 100 Sportive

It’s great to hear how Gareth has benefitted from our Active 4 Health Partnership. One of the best and easiest ways to benefit your health is walking just 30 minutes each day. After that, who knows what you can achieve?

Health-giving therapies from pet companions a

b

c

esidents from Great Oaks have welcomed a new feathered friend to the residential, nursing and dementia specialist care home in Bournemouth - a budgie called Smuggler. Smuggler is the first pet at Great Oaks and was donated to the care home by Eve, a nurse from Hamble Heights care home, which is also managed by Encore. Great Oaks is the latest addition to its established family of care homes in the South of England and includes Fairmile Grange in Christchurch. Residents were given the opportunity to name the new budgie and ‘Smuggler’ won by a unanimous decision.

Smuggler has now been introduced as part of Great Oaks’ pet therapy sessions. This includes visits to the home by sibling Shih Tzus, Frankie and Harry, as well an array of animals brought in by The Creature Teachers, which specialises in facilitating this special experience in care homes. Sue Goktas, dedicated Activities Manager of Great Oaks, said: ‘‘We believe that visits from our furry friends have a really positive impact on our residents’ wellbeing, especially those living with dementia. We have seen that having a pet for company can trigger positive memories for our residents, as well as evoking a feeling of calm. Research shows that holding and petting the animals can lower the heart rate, reduce blood pressure and really boost your mood.”

Daily pastimes and interests are planned at Great Oaks to ensure that a variety of engaging activities are always on offer for residents if they wish to get involved. Entertainers are also regularly invited into the home for dance and music sessions. The home strives to boost each resident’s wellbeing, happiness and quality of life. For further information about the care and facilities at Great Oaks, call 01202 087 444.

Customer Services Officer What does your job involve? I am part of a team of frontline staff who help members of the public with their enquiries. This can be face to face, on the telephone, via email or social media. Our day begins at 7.45am when the post arrives. We scan it so it can be distributed electronically to the different offices and departments across Christchurch and East Dorset. From 8.45am we then open our reception areas and welcome visitors to our offices. No two days are the same here in Customer Services; it is a busy and fast paced environment which makes most days go very quickly!

at the Tivoli Theatre What is the name of the magical object containing the Genie in the story of Aladdin? To enter our competition please email your answer to lauren@tivoliwimborne.co.uk or send a postal entry to Aladdin Competition, Tivoli Theatre, West Borough, Wimborne Minster, Dorset, BH21 1LT.

What is the best thing about your job? The people! I enjoy helping people and solving their enquiries. We also have a great team ethic within Customer Services where we always endeavour to create solutions, not problems. There isn’t anything I dislike about my job - I’m really lucky!

What are the strangest things your team have been asked? Well, once someone phoned us on Christmas Eve to ask how long it would take to cook her big turkey! We did wish her good luck but suggested she referred to the instructions on the packaging!

All entries to be received by midday on Friday 8 December. Family ticket is for four people, including a maximum of two adults for the performance on Sunday 17 December at 6pm. This prize has no cash value and cannot be transferred. Your contact details will only be used for the purposes of this competition and will not be shared or used for any other purpose.
