Leader’s Message
In This Edition
Councillor David Flagg
With summer upon us I was really pleased to see three of our beautiful beaches again awarded prestigious Seaside Awards, a testament to our Community and Recreation Team, as well as our fantastic volunteers who work hard to protect and continually improve our very special coastline. There are lots of opportunities for our communities to engage with upcoming projects, particularly along our coastline. Natural England are currently running a consultation on the section of ‘The England Coast Path’ that includes Christchurch. That consultation finishes on 16 August so there’s still time to have your say at www.gov.uk/ englandcoastpath. Recently we’ve been working with the Dorset Coast Forum on engagement events around some major coastal improvements projects we have planned to ensure we include the ideas of our residents and visitors in the final design. Plans have been submitted for improvement works at Avon Beach and will soon be submitted for the rebuild of the Highcliffe Castle zig-zag path. Subject to planning permission both of these projects should begin in the autumn. We are also developing a new coastal strategy which will look at how we manage our coastline over the coming years. We want to know your thoughts on this and are holding a dropin engagement event on Tuesday 5 September at Highcliffe Castle. You can find out more about all that’s going on along the coastline, including this event, in this publication. I hope you will all get out and about this summer and enjoy the many great events taking place in Christchurch. You could even make an Active Promise to our Health and Activity Team. I’m looking forward in particular to Stompin’ on the Quomps. I must congratulate the team on their recent Queens Award for voluntary service. So much hard work goes into these events and to be recognised in this way is fantastic both for the organisers and the area. Let’s hope the sun continues to shine this summer. I promise to take regular walks along our beautiful beaches and make the most of the longer days.
Keep In Touch
You will receive your next Courier in November 2017. If you can’t wait until then to find out what’s going on there are lots of other ways to keep up-to-date.

The new name was chosen by castle volunteers at an event earlier in the year and the Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Nick Geary, recently cut the ribbon to declare The Castle Kitchen officially open.
“I’m sure the recipe of passionate staff, combined with a fabulous menu means diners will have a memorable and pleasing experience in such a grand and beautiful setting.”
The Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Nick Geary said “It was a pleasure to officially open The Castle Kitchen, which has

Now in its 23rd year, Stompin’ on the Quomps is one of Christchurch’s most popular events, providing a programme of bands performing soul-latin jazz, blues and big band swing throughout the afternoon and evening on the first Saturday in August each year. Adrian Dwyer, Chairman and co-founder of the event said: “Organising the event is a major undertaking and with increasing regulation and pressure on funding, it is increasingly challenging to keep it going. It takes over 1,000 man-hours and a lot of blood, sweat and tears to run the festival, so to be recognised by The Queen is a huge honour and helps to spur us on to keep Stompin’ alive for the enjoyment of the whole community.” This year’s event takes place on Saturday 5 August so if you’ve never been before why not go and see for yourself just how much fun Stompin’ is.

Have your say on The England Coast Path Residents can now have their say on the 42-mile stretch of Natural England’s coast path which includes the Christchurch coastline. The consultation, which launched on 21 June and is open until midnight on 16 August, includes the section of The England Coast Path from Kimmeridge to Highcliffe. Natural England hopes to complete the coast path, a national trail around England’s coast, by 2020. Once complete it will be one of the longest coastal walking routes in the world. Having recently identified their preferred coastline route in Christchurch, Natural England is now formally consulting with the public and landowners on their proposed route. The route would see existing coastal rights of way formalised on a map and waymarked without any
Christchurch Harbour new pathways being built. Much of the route in Christchurch is on public open space, promenades or beaches owned by the borough council. Those wishing to comment on the route must do so by completing a representation form and returning it to Natural England by midnight on 16 August.
The consultation and representation forms are available online at www.gov.uk/englandcoastpath and hard copies of the consultation and forms are also available to view at the Civic Offices, Highcliffe Library, Christchurch Library and the Christchurch Tourist Information Centre.
A History Date for your Diary Friends of St Catherine’s Hill received a £10,000 National Lottery grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for an exciting project: “History of the Hill, Christchurch Remembered”. Led by volunteers from the local community and with the support of Christchurch and East Dorset Councils, the project focuses on researching, interpreting and raising awareness of the use and importance of St Catherine’s Hill during the First World War. A key part of the project will be the delivery of an on-site community ‘History Day’, taking place on Sunday 24 September this year at St Catherine’s Hill. The project will enhance this already popular biennial event through the funding of living history displays and a pop-up First World War cinema.
The Christchurch Running Festival will take place on Sunday 15 October. The festival will include a 10k run and a 1k fun run for under 16s. The 10k run will follow a scenic route of Stanpit Marsh, Avon Beach and Mudeford Quay. There will be fitness stands and activities for children on Stanpit Marsh. To book a place on either run please contact 2rmenquiries@christchurchandeastdorset.gov. uk or phone Two Riversmeet Leisure Complex on 01202 477987. @cb_edd_councils 5

Artist’s impression of basement passage with stained glass exhibition
Exciting times at the castle If you love visiting the jewel in Christchurch’s crown, Highcliffe Castle, then you’ll be excited to know that the latest phase of restoration works start on 31 July. Once complete, the 18-month building project will allow visitors full access for the first time to the restored Penleaze wing of the castle. As well as works to the Penleaze wing, the castle’s historic kitchen is being restored and new exhibition and activity spaces created. A new conservation studio will be created allowing an internationally important collection of stained glass to be restored and displayed.
@highcliffecastle1
The castle will also welcome back some original pieces of furniture which are currently held in storage by the V&A. New staircases and floors are being added and two lifts are being installed, meaning the whole castle will be accessible to all. The work is being funded by a substantial grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund with additional funding from the Country Houses Foundation and The Wolfson Foundation. While the works take place the library and ante-library will be closed to the public and the whole castle will be closed from 1 November 2017-mid March 2018. A reduced admission

rate is being charged to visitors until building work is complete. Throughout the 18-month build project The Castle Kitchen will remain open so you’ll still be able to enjoy lunch or coffee and cake whilst visiting the castle or the grounds. Regular updates on how the work is progressing will be published on Highcliffe Castle’s social media pages, newsletters, in the Courier and also on information boards displayed in the castle grounds. At various points during the work the public will be invited to view progress on prebooked tours and details of these will be made available in advance.

‘My Active Promise’
Make your ‘Active Promise’ this summer Keeping active is really important for our health and wellbeing, yet many of us find it tricky to fit in the recommended 30 minutes a day to keep healthy. Just sitting can have negative effects on your health, so have a think; are you doing enough to enjoy the protective benefits of being physically active?
The councils’ Active 4 Health team would like to set you a challenge…
Would you like to join us in making an ‘Active Promise’? In terms of getting active it is really important to start small and build up slowly. It is also a good idea to choose something that will motivate you and be fun. Do you enjoy the fresh air? Do you enjoy the water? Would you like to learn something new? Would you like to meet new friends?
Would you like more quality time with your family? Would you like to get more involved in helping your community or environment? These can all be linked to ways of getting more active, just work out what is most important for you. Local people across Christchurch and East Dorset have already started to make their ‘Active Promises’, will they inspire you to get started?

Living with Dementia: the reality and inspiration erry Eccott was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia on 2nd April 2013. Since then, Terry has been sharing his experiences through his presentation in hospitals and welcome days for the Alzheimer’s Society. As part of its campaign to become a dementia resource for the local community, Fairmile Grange welcomed Terry to share his journey. Terry delivered two presentations for the residents, friends, family and staff of Fairmile Grange, as well as local healthcare professionals. The Mayor of Christchurch, Councillor Nick Geary, accompanied by the Mayoress, Mrs Gillian Geary, also visited Fairmile Grange to listen to Terry’s inspirational journey. Whilst the subject matter of his presentation was incredibly honest, he has embraced the disease and maintains a great sense of humour. His positivity was inspirational and he commented that his vocation to increase awareness of dementia is what continues to give him energy and keeps his brain activity functioning well.
Terry Eccot with Mayor of Christchurch Nick Geary and Mayoress Gillian Geary
“It was an honour to be asked by Fairmile Grange to give my presentation (Living With Dementia). In my home county of Hampshire there are 25,000 people diagnosed with dementia. These numbers are frightening as there are only 10 Dementia Support Workers and 10 Dementia Advisors working for the Alzheimer’s Society that cover the region. Those figures are from just one county, therefore, it gives an idea of the magnitude of the situation across the UK. The number of those diagnosed with dementia
is forever increasing and is a desperate situation that has to be dealt with. So I will continue to campaign for dementia awareness and for more understanding of the disease for as long as my health permits.” Fairmile Grange, the private new care home situated at Christchurch Hospital, specialises in nursing and dementia care. It provides free training to the local community with the Virtual Dementia Tour, which is the closest experience to what it is like to live with dementia.

How does your garden grow?
Wildflower power Beautiful wildflower displays are being admired by residents and visitors across Christchurch this summer. Stunning, natural flashes of colour have been brightening up verges and roundabouts in the borough. Barry Webber, Tree and Landscape Officer at Christchurch and East Dorset Councils, explains how we can successfully grow our own patch of wildflowers. Hopefully, by following Barry’s top tips next summer we will all have bright and colourful wild flowers in our gardens.
1. Ground preparation The ideal time to prepare is in April. Clear all weeds, dead vegetation and turf, leaving bare topsoil at your chosen site. Rake over the newly cleared ground until you have a firm base and a fine tilth. Then use a herbicide from your local garden centre, but avoid windy and wet days to get the best results. Leave the area for a few weeks but make sure you keep on top of weeds so the wildflowers don’t have to compete too much.
2. Sowing the wildflower seeds It’s best to do this is April/ May. You only need a small handful of wildflower seeds per square metre. You will be able to buy your seeds from a local garden centre but it’s always best to use seeds from native plants, so this makes our garden wildlife and insects happy! It’s also nice to have a mixture of seeds so that you end up with a bright a colourful display. It’s good to sow the seeds when the ground has warmed up, to allow them to germinate so they get a head start on the weeds!
3. Let mother nature do her bit Annuals tend to have a brighter display but by including some perennials you can be sure that you will get some show the following year if the annuals don’t self-seed. Weeds will naturally find their way in to your display but but as long as you keep on top of them you’ll be sure to enjoy the summer colours your wildflowers bring.
If you have enjoyed seeing the wildflower displays, why not tweet us a photo of your favourite patch using #CEDWildflowers We look forward to seeing your photos!

Economic Development Officer What does your job involve? I support local businesses, mainly in the advanced engineering and manufacturing industry, including aircraft maintenance and electronics. I also work with schools, colleges and universities to ensure students have the opportunity to train in this key area of local industry. I work as part of a team supporting our Economic Growth Strategy, known as ‘Going for Growth’ and we all work with local businesses in different ways to ensure our local business economy continues to thrive.

Young Enterprise in Christchurch schools Christchurch Borough Council is supporting the Young Enterprise programme which is currently running in Christchurch schools. The programme aims to help students to develop the knowledge and attitudes they need to succeed when they enter the workplace. Hannah Cook, Dorset Young Enterprise Manager said “We are delighted to be back running the Young Enterprise employability programme in Christchurch schools again this year and appreciate the funding from Christchurch Borough Council which has ensured that this could happen. We’ve had some really positive feedback from teachers and students and great input from volunteers who have played a vital role in assisting us with the programme delivery.” Young Enterprise is always looking for volunteers to get involved in helping to deliver the programmes. Anyone wanting to know more can email Hannah at dorset@y-e.org.uk.
What do you do on a typical day? It may be a cliché but no two days are the same! One day I can be meeting with local businesses considering how we can raise their business profile and attract more business to the area. Another day I can be involved with staff from our local schools looking at how we can address potential skills gaps in the advanced engineering and manufacturing industry by encouraging students to consider studying for qualifications in this subject area whilst at school.
What are your plans for local businesses in the next few months? We have some interesting events taking place! I’m busy planning seminars to update local businesses on the apprenticeship levy which was introduced earlier this year. There’ll be more details on these in our monthly ‘Going for Growth’ e-newsletter soon. We’re also working with Bournemouth Airport and local businesses to deliver an internal auditors course on 10 and 11 October. There are discounted rates for local businesses.
