News New Broadband Connection Voucher scheme to benefit businesses

Are you the owner of a small or medium-sized business in Christchurch? Why not take advantage of the new Broadband Connection Voucher scheme recently launched by our Economic Development team.

The scheme is aimed at encouraging the take-up of superfast and ultrafast broadband services across the area. It seeks to boost the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises and is now open for applications.

Stunning improvements at Stanpit Recreation Ground If you use the Stanpit area regularly then you will have noticed some changes taking place over the last year, which we hope you are enjoying. Funding was provided to enhance the area with the aim of improving access and making the site a more welcoming space for families and dog walkers. We’ve installed some lovely new benches, designed by local craftsperson Karen Hanson, which have drawn on natural lines from the area to make some really unique spaces. Dorset Waste Partnership has also supplied new larger dual-use bins and the pathways and planting schemes have been improved.

Overall we hope that this space will be well used and enjoyed by the community. If you haven’t been for a while then head down and check out the area for yourself.

The team offer an impartial, non-profit making service and are totally committed to providing you protection by ensuring your home is fully inspected and all work complies with regulations.

The team offers a very flexible service with building inspectors carrying out early morning visits from 8am and even same day inspections if contacted by 9.30am.

Thanks to a new computer system they are able to take applications over the phone with all plans and relevant documents being sent via email meaning you don’t even have to fill in a form. One application the team is currently working on is the Highcliffe Castle renovation project which is due to start early summer.

There will be a renovation of the East wing at each floor level.

The work will involve increasing the size of the main entrance and shop areas, whilst providing visitor access to all floors. Several exhibition rooms, a stain glass workshop, and an educational and reading room, which will all be open to the general public and schools, will be created as part of this work. A viewing platform will be put in over the old kitchen area, and two lifts are being installed to improve access throughout the building.

Martin Thompson, Building Control Team Leader, described it as ‘an interesting project and will be nice to see the building being used to its full potential’.

Volunteering at the Regent Centre The Regent Centre currently has around 200 volunteers who all work in a variety of essential areas and ensure that the centre continues to be the success it is today. Volunteering is a great way of meeting new people, serving the community and making friends.

Have you visited Highcliffe Castle recently? If not then you don’t know what you’re missing out on. If you have then you’ll already know that the castle is evolving.

Last year saw some excellent events and 2017 promises to be bigger and better playing host to fun-filled events for visitors of all ages and tastes.

Thanks to over £3m of Heritage Lottery Funding the castle is also undergoing a major refurbishment.

Building work starts at the beginning of the summer and will help preserve Highcliffe Castle for future generations to enjoy.

The hugely successful Petfest will return in June as well as a more extensive theatre programme with outdoor performances throughout the summer months. August will see the castle welcome Highcliffe’s Got Talent, which will no doubt attract both the best, and almost certainly the worst performers in the area.

Whatever your talent please come along and show off your skills.

This year has already gotten off to a flying start with Highcliffe Castle being shortlisted for the ‘UK Weddings Awards’ in recognition of the 150 weddings hosted every year.

The Natural Highcliffe - Photographer of the Year competition is on show throughout Spring. This will showcase the beauty of our local surroundings.

The Highcliffe Hounds photography competition will run in the summer so keep an eye out for 

how to get involved. It’s your chance to prove that Highcliffe has the best dogs around, with the most character. These photographs will also be displayed throughout the castle.

May promises to be a month to look forward to as the castle teams up with both Exbury Gardens and the Sammy Miller Museum. Towards the end of May horticultural experts from Exbury Gardens will be on hand to offer advice, as well as information about their own gardens, perfect if you are a budding Alan Titchmarsh. Alongside this will be the Scarecrow Festival so why not enter a scarecrow in the competition and bring the whole family for a great day out. During May the castle will also be filled with motorcycles as the Sammy Miller Museum brings some of its classic bikes, very carefully, into our Grade 1 listed building.

This year’s free Sunday afternoon programme is bigger and better with the return of old favourites such as Swing Unlimited and GoJo as well as new performances from the Coda Ukelele Band and a summer serenade with the Southampton Band. Thanks to everyone who came along last year for your generous donations which all go towards maintaining the castle and ensuring we can continue to host the events you all enjoy.

Your generosity is greatly appreciated and ensures these fantastic events can continue.

Aside from all of these excellent events, you may not know that the castle offers an extensive wellbeing programme, having started with Nidra Gong sessions last year. These include three Yoga sessions every week as well as Pilates classes. SofiActive brings to the castle some heart-healthy exercise for everyone with her Tuesday evening H.I.T classes and her over 60’s classes on a Monday afternoon and Wednesday morning. What better location to get fit and healthy than Highcliffe Castle?

Council Budget

Council Budget 2017/18 The council’s budget for local services in Christchurch was approved in February. Local services are funded by a combination of government grants, business rates, Council Tax, service fees and charges, and other income. The total budget for 2017/18 is £30m.

The borough council’s element of the Council Tax bill has increased by £5 for a Band D property, which is just under 10p per week. This means that the annual charge for Christchurch’s element of Council Tax for a Band D property from 1 April 2017 is £194.99.

Despite the ongoing and significant reduction in funding from Central Government the council remains committed to delivering the valued services it does to residents without the need to increase Council Tax beyond the Government’s referendum threshold. By 2018 the council will no longer receive any core revenue funding from Central Government. However, we will ensure that further efficiencies are identified to protect future service delivery.

To achieve this we will need to change the way we work across all services whilst continuing to protect vital local services and deliver our priorities in the years ahead.

Your Council Tax explained As well as a proportion going to Christchurch Borough Council, the total Council Tax you pay is also required by Dorset County Council, Dorset Police, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Authority, and for some areas, local Town and Parish Councils.

In total the annual charge for Council Tax for a Band D property in Christchurch from 1 April 2017 is £1,801.97 including an average town and parish charge. For those areas not paying a town and parish charge the charge is £1,787.03. This represents an increase of 4.25 per cent from 2016/17.

Below you can see the Council Tax for a Band D property from 1 April 2017. The amount of Council Tax you will pay varies depending upon which Council Tax band your home is in. Local Government Reorganisation

Secretary of State to decide on Future Dorset Christchurch Borough Council, along with the other councils in Dorset, is currently waiting for a decision from the Secretary of State Rt. Hon. Sajid Javid MP on the Future Dorset submission for local government reorganisation submitted by six of the nine councils in February 2017.

Three councils, Christchurch, East Dorset District Council and Purbeck District Council, voted in January not to be part of the submission. A ‘minded to’ decision was expected by the end of March so may well have been announced by the time you read your copy of the Christchurch Courier.

Secretary of State gives his initial decision on the Future Dorset proposal Summer

Christchurch Borough Council intends to make representations to the Secretary of State outlining why it does not support the Future Dorset submission and has already written to the Sajid Javid including a copy of the Full Council meeting minutes from 31 January. Both the Mayor of Christchurch and the Acting Leader of the Council have been to meet with ministers to discuss Christchurch’s position on local government reorganisation.

A Day In The Life Of

. . . f o e f i l e h t A day in Hannah Bosence Countryside Engagement Officer What does your job involve?

All sorts! I’m very lucky that my work is so varied, and no two days are ever the same. My job covers everything from leading volunteer groups, to school visits, to evening talks for adults. I need to be pretty talkative and get people out enjoying our countryside.

What does a typical day involve?

These last few months I have spent a lot of time out on sites doing practical work with our conservation volunteers who are invaluable in helping us look after our

Nature Reserves, even when the weather might not be the best. As we enter bird nesting season, and the warmer weather is on its way, my focus turns more towards education, and showing off our sites in all their glory.

What are looking forward to this year?

The summer as it involves a variety of events taking place on our Nature Reserves, from Nuts About Nature Sessions for the little ones, Early Bird Dawn Chorus Walks for adults, and our ever popular wildlife colouring competition for kids of all ages. There is of course a fair amount of office time required to balance out all this fresh air.

I consider myself very lucky that I enjoy my work so much.

If anyone wants to join me digging muddy ditches and litter picking in the rain, you’re always welcome.
