Hello readers,

Welcome to summer and the 2026 World Cup! As I write, I’m donning my England shirt ready for their first game against Croatia. Although I’m hoping that by the time you are reading this, England are still in the World Cup (or if you’re one of one the later recipients of this magazine, you may even be celebrating England winning the World Cup!). I can’t say I’m as excited about this World Cup as in previous years and sense that other football fans feel the same – could it be because many of the games are being played late at night or in the early hours of the morning? Who thought it would be good idea to host it in North America? It’s very inconvenient!

For many of our readers, a summer of football is an exciting prospect but I’m sure there are many others who will be rolling their eyes heavenward, muttering “please, not more football!” So, for those of you who don’t care too much for football (or ‘soccer’ as I constantly hear it being referred to by our American cousins), we’ve got a special feature on page 20 looking at ‘other’ more obscure sports activities you might not have even heard of, but are taking place right on our own doorsteps. The activities featured will hopefully inspire readers to get out and active, with ideas for all ages and abilities.

Regular readers of BH Living may recall our feature on the history of Poole in the last edition, which received some really positive feedback. We clearly have quite a few history-loving readers in our ranks. For those of you who love a bit of local history, we’ve looked at the fascinating story of Christchurch which dates back over 1000 years, with many ups and a few downs over that time. Many street names in Christchurch are testimony to its rich history. Take a look at page 22.

Are you green-fingered? I’d like to be, but I think I’m probably more ‘brown-fingered’ from scratching around in pots and flower beds with very little clue of what I’m doing. So, I’m grateful to Haskins’ resident expert Alastair Urquhart, who took some time out of his busy schedule to give us some much needed summer gardening tips on page 24.

It seeks to improve safety for residents, businesses and visitors and works with communities to deal with anti-social behaviour.

Anti-social behaviour is defined as behaviour that causes, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress to others. It is separated into three categories: Personal (targeted at an individual or group), Nuisance (not targeted but affects wider community) and environmental (affects property or public spaces).

A recent survey which closed on 12 July 2026, sought to find out the experiences of local residents that have had experience of anti-social behaviour so the Partnership is more aware of when and where the behaviour is happening. After looking at the results, they will then work closely with Dorset Police and other support services to tackle this behaviour through prevention, engagement, support and enforcement.

The Partnership asked people to take part in the survey so they could identify what has had the biggest impact on local residents and devise a strategy that can direct resources to the right places helping to address the behaviour.

BCP council are working with Dorset Council to coordinate the creation of a local Nature Recovery Strategy. Both councils will also be working with Natural England, a government agency to deliver the new strategy.

The strategy will help bring together and showcase the great things people are already doing for local nature, set Dorset’s future nature recovery priorities, identify opportunities where nature areas can be created or improved, suggest activities which will help expand nature across Dorset to see Dorset meet the government goal of having 30% of land, rivers and seas that are managed with the intent of seeing nature thrive by 2030.

In urban areas access to green space is really important to people’s health and wellbeing so the strategy will also help to identify areas in more urban settings that can help landowners and local communities make a positive difference to support wildlife and nature recovery.

New £17.9 million safe haven for severely-ill young people opens A long-awaited specialist unit to support children and young people in mental health crisis across Dorset is now open.

Seastone, Dorset Healthcare’s new £17.9 million high intensity environment in Bournemouth, will provide 24-hour inpatient care for 13-18-year olds with severe mental health issues. As well as offering the latest facilities and expert support, the eight-bed unit – the first of its kind in the South West – will allow patients to be treated close to friends and family, greatly reducing the need for out-of-area placements which can hamper the chances of recovery.

Seastone- which was designed by Medical Architecture & Art and built by Kier Construction – will provide eight ensuite bedrooms, seclusion and de-escalation areas, classroom facilities, therapy, sensory and games rooms, a gym and a space for family visits.

Dorset Healthcare Chief Executive Matthew Bryant joined NHP Strategy Director Darren Crook for the opening ceremony, alongside representatives from the Dorset Mental Health Forum and Kier Construction. Local MP’s Neil Duncan Jordan (Poole), Lloyd Hatton (South Dorset) and Jessica Toale (Bournemouth West) also attended the event.

Matthew Bryant said: “Having Seastone means that seriously ill young people can now be cared for locally, close to their family

and friends, which will greatly improve their chances of a lasting recovery. The unit looks truly amazing and it will undoubtedly help a great many people in real need.

The unit is purpose- built to meet the needs of young people with needs so complex they cannot be safely managed in the regular CAMHS inpatient facility on the site.

Darren Crook CBE, Delivery Strategy Director for the New Hospital Programme said: “It was wonderful to be invited to the opening of such outstanding facilities, which will make a huge difference to young lives, families and the wider community. The New Hospital Programme continues to strive to deliver better, faster and with ultimate value for the taxpayer.”

The third and final phase of the local NHP mental health improvements will see extensive refurbishment and modernisation works to support adult inpatients at St Ann’s hospital, due to be completed over the course of 2027/2028.

They have come together to encourage residents and contractors to dispose of garden waste responsibly.

As warmer weather approaches and gardening activity increases, authorities are reminding householders that they have a legal responsibility to ensure their waste is disposed of correctly. Fly-tipping of grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, branches and other garden waste can damage wildlife habitats, block rural roads and gateways, increase fire risk and place a significant burden on landowners and taxpayers.

The campaign will raise awareness of the environmental and financial impact of green waste fly-tipping while promoting legal disposal options, including council garden waste services, household recycling centres and licensed waste carriers.

Pull a 737 to support local families Families charity Home-Start Wessex has launched an appeal for local people to help pull a plane and raise money to support its work with families in Dorset. The charity is putting together a team of 20 to pull a Boeing 737 at this year’s Dorset Plane Pull, the UK’s only charity event of its kind.

Home-Start Wessex offers friendship, practical support and emotional advice to parents in Dorset with at least one child under five when they are in crisis, providing specialist groups and one to one home visits.

Dorset Plane Pull is one of the country’s most unique fundraising events. Teams of 20 people enter to pull a Boeing 737 weighing in at 35,000 kg, a distance of 50 metres. Since its founding in 2009, the event has raised over £400,000 for charities. Over 6,560 pullers from 328 tams have picked up a rope and completed the challenge.

This year’s event takes place on 31 August at Bournemouth Airport.

Residents are being encouraged to only use licensed waste carriers - aska for waste transfer documentation where appropriate to check that contractors removing garden waste are registered legally. If disposing of waste yourself, use can use council garden waste collections or take your garden waste to a BCP recycling centre. Both the councils and Dorset Police say enforcement action will continue against offenders, with agencies sharing intelligence and working collaboratively to identify those responsible for rural waste crime. Local neighbourhoods receive £20million government boost Residents in Boscombe West, Hamworthy West & Turlin Moor and West Howe, can look forward to an extra £20 million being spent in their communities thanks to a grant from the government’s Pride in Place Programme. Work is now underway to recruit local residents who are passionate about their neighbourhoods onto newly created Pride in Place Boards that will have a chance to recommend how the money is spent.

Successful applicants will help lead this major, community-driven investment – putting local voices at the heart of decisions that will transform public spaces, strengthen neighbourhoods, delivering lasting change over the next decade.

Since the announcement, Jessica Toale MP for Bournemouth West has spent the past few months engaging with the community to understand how they want the money to be spent.

She said: “I was delighted when Pride in Place funding from the government was announced for West Howe. It will support those schools, charities and local businesses working hard to improve the area.”

Cardiac arrest survivor reunited with ambulance crew who helped save her life A 71-year old woman from Dorset has been reunited with South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) crew members who helped save her life following a cardiac arrest at her home last year. On the 11th November 2025, Susan Rousell, from Highcliffe, Christchurch, began experiencing concerning symptoms while at home. Realising something was seriously wrong, she called 999.

Susan went into cardiac arrest in her living room shortly after ambulance crews Susan meets her 999 superheroes arrived. Clinicians immediately began delivering vital emergency treatment – including CPR and the use of a defibrillator. Once her condition stabilised, she was transferred under blue lights to Royal Bournemouth Hospital where she remained for five days. During her treatment, Susan had a stent fitted on her first day in hospital, a second stent two days later, and a third stent at the end of February this year as part of her ongoing cardiac care.

Susan is now recovering well and recently she and her family had the opportunity to reunite with the life-saving crew at Christchurch Ambulance Station. They met paramedics, Kevin Cooke and Jonathon Nicholson, alongside Emergency Ambulance Associates, Sharon Chaytor and Alexander Rose.

Susan said: “It was a joy to meet Kevin, Sharon, Alex and Jonathon again. Being able to come along with my family to say thank you for everything they did for me that day has been incredibly special.”

Since leaving hospital, Susan has continued attending a cardiac rehabilitation programme and is looking forward to spending more quality time with her family.

Sharon Chaytor, Emergency Ambulance Associate at SWASFT, said: “Being reunited with Susan and her family was incredibly special.

Seeing her smiling and recovering after such a frightening cardiac arrest reminds us exactly why we do this job.”

Sandbanks Introduces automated vehicle toll system

The Sandbanks Ferry will introduce Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology for all vehicle crossings from the 1st July 2026 (including motorcycles), bringing a faster and simpler experience for passengers. From this date, vehicle crossing payments in person by card, paper ticket or by Sandbanks Ferry Toll Card (SFTC) will no longer be possible, and all vehicle toll payments will move online. The cost of crossings is unchanged with pedestrians and cyclists not affected.

Chairman of The Sandbanks Ferry, Mike Kean said: “We are confident that this free-flowing traffic system will make a real and noticeable difference, getting people across the water faster and reducing pressure on local roads.”

The payment website will be live prior to 1st July 2026, allowing passengers to set up accounts and familiarise themselves with the system in advance.

A BCP Foster Carer recently joined carers from across the UK at a special reception at Windsor Castle, where she was personally thanked by His Majesty King Charles for her vital work.

Since 2011, Maxine has gone above and beyond; creating a loving home, supporting young people to be their best selves and staying in touch long after they leave care.

Whether it is a note in a lunchbox or letters during school trips, Maxine has ensured every child feels loved and supported.

When Maxine shared that she still keeps in touch with the children that she’s previously cared for, The King said: “That is so lovely. That’s what we need, more people that can keep this job going.”

Local hospital joins forces with private cancer care company

University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) is partnering with GenesisCare UK to provide private cancer services to patients across Dorset, bringing more than £50m in investment into NHS cancer care over the next 20 years.

GenesisCare will develop a state-of-the-art private patient facility delivering radiotherapy and Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) services at Poole Hospital which will include chemotherapy and immunotherapy and be for patients with medical insurance or those wishing to self-pay. This additional investment, alongside UHD’s existing funding, will increase capacity, help patients begin treatment sooner, and fund the recruitment of additional consultants to support NHS care.

As a result of UHD’s transformation programme, space became available at Poole Hospital and local cancer doctors spotted an opportunity to use this to help improve patient services, while creating a new income stream for the Trust.

Dr Ben Masters, Lead Oncologist at UHD, said “The deal is really beneficial to our NHS as the income generated can be reinvested in NHS care. We can also use GenesisCare’s expertise to benefit patients here in Dorset.

Haskins Ferndown raises over £18,000 for Amelia’s Rainbow The Haskins Ferndown Team recently donated over £18,000 to support its chosen Charity of the Year for 2025 – Amelia’s Rainbow Charity. The garden centre team has taken part in a variety of fundraising activities to support the charity, including hosting raffles and taking part in a fire walk.

Amelia’s Rainbow Charity supports families whose children have life-limiting, serious illnesses, disabilities or terminal conditions.

Arts by the Sea returns in 2026 with free arts events across Bournemouth

Arts by the Sea festival returns to Bournemouth this September, transforming the town centre into a vibrant celebration of creativity inspired by this year’s theme, ELEMENTAL, a celebration of the forces of nature, raw creativity and the energy that connects people and place.

From Friday 25th – Saturday 26th September, the South West’s largest free festival of arts, culture, people and place will fill the Lower Gardens and town centre with bold installations, live performance and immersive experiences, before expanding across the town with an extended, two-week Fringe.

Leading the 2026 festival is Bournemouth-based multidisciplinary artist Rhea Hanlon, better known as Lost Lines, who has been announced as this year’s Artist in Residence. Known for her playful, character-led work across digital illustration, traditional media and public art, she will shape the festival’s look and feel while creating new commissioned work and engaging local communities through activity and workshops.

Artist in residence, Rhea Hanlon said: “Being invited to return to Bournemouth as the 2026 Artist in Residence feels incredibly special.

Dorset Police recognises commitment of volunteers

A team of dedicated volunteers have been celebrated for their tireless support and commitment to public service at a special award ceremony. As part of Volunteers’ Week 2026, Dorset Police held a Police Support Volunteers award ceremony at Dorset Police Headquarters, Winrith, to recognise all the fantastic volunteers do to help keep the local communities safe.

Among the winners was Rob Powell, awarded for dedicating over 20 years to volunteering for Dorset Police, where he currently acts as a ‘role player’. He takes part in a range of practical scenarios to assist with the training for new recruits and current police officers. By day, he works as an IT consultant in the aerospace and defence sector, but in his spare time he has found time to volunteer for many roles over the years.

Rob said: “I really enjoy my current role as it provides a lot of satisfaction to see how the students react to practical scenarios and put their classroom learning into practice.”

Here in Dorset, the Police Support Volunteers work in a variety of roles including Cadet Leaders, Rural Mounted Volunteers, Public Contact Volunteers who work with Neighbourhood Policing Teams and Community Speed Watch volunteers.

Assistant Chief Officer Jo Mosley, said: “This award ceremony was an opportunity to recognise and thank our volunteers for their remarkable dedication and commitment over many years of service.”

Also joining the 2026 programme as Associate Artists are Bombay Dance Club, the Bournemouthbased duo Sona and Shweta. They bring the joy, energy and inclusivity of Bollywood dance to audiences across the UK. They will present a brand-new performance inspired by the ELEMENTAL theme, alongside opportunities for audiences to take part.

Shweta said: “We feel incredibly honoured to be part of one of Bournemouth’s biggest and most loved festivals. To contribute to the event through dance means a lot to us.”

Arts by the Sea is a free event bringing together diverse music, intriguing installations, dance, street theatre and participatory experiences in one unique and celebratory programme. It is founded by BCP council and receives regular funding from Arts Council England as a National Portfolio Organisation. From 20232026 BCP Council will receive more than £150,000 per year to increase opportunities and improve access to creativity and culture in the region.

Sona, part of Bombay Dance Club, said: “Being part of Arts by the Sea is truly special for us. It’s a celebration of creativity, diversity and togetherness and we’re excited to invite everyone to join us and celebrate through dance.”

Following a successful pilot in 2025, the Arts by the Sea Fringe also returns this year, running from Sunday 27th September to Sunday 11th October. It begins the day after Arts by the Sea festival to build on its momentum across the town.

Cllr Andy Martin, Portfolio holder for Culture, Customer and Communication at BCP Council said: “Arts by the Sea continues to be a cornerstone of our cultural calendar, transforming the town centre into a vibrant, open air playground of creativity and bringing people together in the heart of Bournemouth and across our neighbourhoods.”

Celebrity Chef Lesley Waters led 80 people from across the country in a mass cook-along at Dorchester Corn exchange to promote how simple healthy cooking can improve health and resilience for all. Get Dorset Cooking LIVE was organised by Dorset Healthy cooking charity the Friendly Food Club (FFC) to publicise its ongoing Get Dorset Cooking campaign. The participants at the event, which was funded by Dorset Council, included community groups, families, carers supported by FFC, and people from local charities including The Bus Shelter in Weymouth, Read-Easy and the Space Youth Project in Poole.

Lesley Waters, who has appeared on BBC Ready Steady Cook and ITV’s This Morning, was joined by fellow chefs Nicholas Balfe (BBC Great British Menu) and Steve Yates – Head Chef of the Kings Arms in Dorchester.

Lesley said: “As someone who is passionate about cooking and the Dorset community which I am very proud to be part of, it has been an absolute pleasure to join with people to celebrate how important cooking is to our health and wellbeing.”

One in nine families in the UK - 11,000 families in Dorset, are now struggling to afford healthy, nutritious food, with 53% of insecure households having cut back on fruit and 40% on vegetables due to rising prices.

Police utilise drones to identify speeding motorists

An innovative new road safety operation was recently carried out in Sandbanks by Dorset Police responding to community concerns. Officers used drone technology to monitor local drivers after the community raised concerns of anti-social driving in sthe area. Over 70 motorists were identified as speeding on the evening of Friday 29th May and two arrests were made for driving over the drinking limit.

Community concerns lead to targeted action against speeding Community Speed Watch (CSW) volunteers teamed up with Dorset Police officers to reduce speeding following concerns raised by local communities. In 2025, exceeding the speed limit and travelling too fast made up 67% of contributory factors linked to fatal collisions.

Last month, officers took to the roads with CSW volunteers and the camera safety team on local roads following over 1000 public concerns raised by residents over the past three years about speeding and other road traffic offences. One motorist was stopped in St Leonards travelling at 71mph in a 50mph speed limit while they had children in the car. In West Moors, a vehicle drove past the CSW team and inappropriately gestured towards them. A total of 73 road traffic offences were dealt with and the Safety Camera Team identified 128 motorists travelling in excess of the speed limit.

The activity took place at the start of Community Speed Watch week, where volunteers were deployed across the county in a bid to keep motorists driving within the speed limit. Community Speed Watch is a road safety initiative, which empowers volunteers to contribute to road safety and raise awareness of the dangers of speeding in their local communities. During the week 34 teams took part and 384 letters were issued to drivers.

Superintended Rob Chalkley, of Dorset Police, said: “The work that our CSW volunteers carry out is invaluable, they selflessly give up their time to help communities and make sure the road network is safe.”

Plans submitted to expand capacity of Chapel Gate Eco Park Plans to expand a Dorset Eco Park have been submitted to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council.

The updated proposals from the organic recycling and renewable energy company include introducing state of the art, AI-led materials recovery technology (MRF) which will pre-sort material for the Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) on-site and allow an additional 25,000 tonnes of recyclable materials to be processed each year. It will also increase the sites capacity to recycle green waste and wood waste by 5,000 tonnes each, enable the site to deal with more local residual waste, support around 30 additional jobs at the site and a new office, welfare, visitor and education facility will be provided.

The facility would also generate enough energy to heat and power over 14,000 homes each year. It would convert non-recyclable waste into electricity and heat for the national grid, whilst also reducing reliance on landfill. A public consultation and exhibition was held at Eco Chapel Lane site on 1st May 2026.

UK’s leading immersive leisure brand coming to Poole

A brand-new immersive leisure experience is coming to The Dolphin in Poole this summer, bringing a fresh, competitive social entertainment concept to the heart of the town centre.

Activate was the world’s first active immersive gaming facility when it launched in Winnipeg in Canada in 2019. Historic Dibbens Building Reopens as New Family-Run Deli and Grocer in Poole Old Town One of Poole Old Town’s most recognisable historic buildings reopened its doors last month, bringing a much-loved local name back to life. Formerly, F Dibben & Sons and remembered by generations of residents and visitors, the store officially reopened on the 19th June as Dibbens Deli and Grocer which will be under the stewardship of the Dibben family and led by Hayleigh Dibben.

The reopening followed the careful restoration and transformation of the landmark premises and the launch was celebrated with a special community event attended by local businesses, stakeholders and representatives from across Poole to mark the beginning of a new chapter fwor the historic site. SPORT IS CHANGING – TRY The different types of sport and activities that Dorset’s residents are engaging in have seen much change over recent years and are making sport and exercise more accessible and easier to get involved in than ever before.

These new and emerging activities still provide the crucial health and fitness benefits that more popular sports like football or tennis may provide as well as the important social dynamic that participants enjoy. But these new activities are proving to be a gateway for people that have stopped getting involved with sporting activities and are giving many a platform to jump back in again.

Here we look at five sporting activities that you may not have considered (or even heard of!) and we’ve even graded them for physical exertion – which physical level is right for you?

Are you an all-out sport fanatic or do you prefer something more easy going that will get your heart pumping a little more enthusiastically without leaving you breathless and gasping at the end?

Padel your way to fitness Another racket sport changing the sporting landscape nationally and locally is ‘Padel’. Padel is like a smaller version of tennis but is played on a larger court than pickleball. A major difference is that it is surrounded by a glass wall that the ball can rebound or bounce off. The sport is also considered a little easier, technically, than tennis with it being underarm serves and a slower ball speed.

The sport is easily accessible, social and easy to pick up and play with family or friends. Just like pickleball, the smaller court makes it easier to connect with your doubles partner and build better relationships.

According to the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association), 860,000 adults and juniors played padel once in the last year. This is a sharp increase from 2024 with the number being 400,000. The infrastructure is expanding all the time with 1553 padel courts available across 559 venues at the end of 2025. This is a huge spike from 2020 when the LTA took over governance of the sport with it being 69 courts.

The sport is evidently succeeding in Dorset as well with numerous clubs now available including Cross Court Padel in Poole, Padelstars Bournemouth and most recently Advantage Padel in Mudeford, Christchurch.

The location features 8 padel courts and even 5 pickleball courts. The club offers multiple annual memberships and is £40 for off peak hourly use of the courts.

Physical exertion level 4/5

Get yourself into a pickle One racket sport that is seeing a large increase in participation over recent years is pickleball. Pickleball combines badminton, tennis and table tennis plus, can be played indoors or outdoors. Two or four players use paddles to hit a ball over a smaller net. Pickleball makes exercise easy with such a small court and is much easier on participant’s joints.

It’s fast-paced and helps with flexibility, balance, muscular strength and endurance. The sport has succeeded due to how quick and easy it is to start playing. No previous racket experience is required and no special equipment. Pickleball is also socially inclusive and easy to build relationships. The court is much smaller than other racket sports, boosting communication and teamwork when playing doubles (2 v 2).

In the BCP area, Dorset Pickleball Club is open to all levels and host weekend socials. Coaching classes and competitive local tournaments are also offered by the club, meaning there is something for everyone whilst also giving seasoned players encouragement to improve and potentially become a champion!

Football – but no running!

Yes, you read it right. ‘Walking football’ is enjoying a surge in popularity. The sport, as the name suggests includes no running, with one foot needing to be in contact with the ground at all times. Furthermore, it’s also a non-contact sport with tackling allowed - as long as no contact is made. The sport is a great way for men and women, especially those with a passion for the beautiful game, to get back into exercise and socialise without the pressures and exertions that a full-on game would involve.

BCP is home to Bournemouth Walking Football Club, founded in 2019 with a membership of over 200 men and women. The club is based at Littledown and offers weekly social games for players who don’t want to play competitively. There is also a club in Poole known as Dexter Sports FC which was formed in 2015, and is open to anyone aged 49+. The club offer regular training sessions on Fridays 7pm-9pm at Blandford Close, Hamworthy and play Mondays 7pm-8pm at Learoyd Road, Canford Heath.

Yoga aims to bring together the mind and body, improving fitness and flexibility and reducing stress. It doesn’t have a high intensity to it so is a great way to socialise, meet people and stretch those muscles.

Yoga in the Park is one example of this in Dorset. Yoga in the Park is run by Park Yoga and is free. The sessions are located at Bournemouth Gardens and run from 9:30-10:30 every Sunday morning from May to September.

A walk through time: The Story of

Christchurch

Today, Christchurch is known for its thriving community and riverside walks, but did you know that its roots stretch back more than 1000 years? Nestled between the Stour and the Avon rivers, the small Dorset town has witnessed centuries of change.

The story begins in the early Saxon period, back when it was known as Tweoxneam (Twynham), which means ‘between two rivers’. Its position is what made it such an ideal site for defence, and by around 870 AD, King Alfred The Great established one of his royal Burhs here, ‘a fortified town’ protecting Wessex from Viking invasion.

The earliest recorded mention of Christchurch in history is in 939 AD, when King Athelstan, the King of the Anglo-Saxons from 924 to 927, granted a weir on the River Avon to the monastery at Milton in Hampshire. Records from the same period also mention a valuable royal salmon fishery, showing that Christchurch’s rivers were central to its early economy. Fishing rights were a sign of influence and wealth, and Christchurch’s rivers provided both.

Ranulf Flambard, the chief minister of King William 11, commenced the building of the Christchurch priory, which is still very dominant on the skyline today. This commencement of building, around the time of the arrival of the Normans in 1094/95 led to the town being renamed after the priory.

The priory we know today offers a Tower Tour where you can climb 176 steps that lead to stunning views of the town and harbour. (The priory is reportedly one of the only monastery churches to have survived the ruling of Henry VIII, but there’s plenty more history to walk through before that.)

Not long after Christchurch Priory had been built, King Henry I (William the Conqueror’s youngest son) gifted the manor and land to his cousin Richard de Redvers around the year 1100 AD. This gift cemented the Redvers family’s influence in the area for generations.

By 1150 AD, Baldwin de Redvers, the first Earl of Devon, together with his son Richard, replaced the towns informal secular priory with a more structured priory of Augustinian canons. These new canons followed strict religious rules, unlike previous local priests.

At the same time, Baldwin granted the townspeople a charter of liberties. This early form of governance gave Christchurch greater authority, helping it grow into a thriving medieval community. The markets and trade continued to support fishing and transport.

Centuries later, Christchurch found itself caught up in national conflict. During the English Civil War 1642- 1651, the town was a Royalist stronghold loyal to King Charles I. Its strategic location near the south coast made it a valuable military site, and both sides recognised its importance. Parliamentarian forces attacked and captured the town, and the castle suffered heavy damage during the fighting. In 1645, a group of 1000 royalists sought to regain the town, forcing the parliamentarians to seek refuge in the castle. The castle proved too strong for the Royalists to capture, with the Parliamentarians maintaining control of Christchurch for the remainder of the war. In 1651 it was deliberately dismantled to prevent further military use. The ruins that stand there today are a reminder of this chapter of history, the broken wall echoing the conflict that once shook the town.

Despite this conflict, Christchurch continued to grow. Its long journey towards civic identity reached a stage of significance on the 25th August 1682 when a Royal Charter confirmed the ‘Borough of Christchurch Twynham’. This chapter confirmed the rights and privileges of its inhabitants and marked the towns official status within the English administrative system. It was a moment of pride and recognition for a community that had weathered centuries of change.

Through the 1980s and 1990s the town invested in conservation, protecting its medieval core. By the 2000s Christchurch had become known for having one of the highest concentrations of older residents in the country. The Office for National Statistics ranked Christchurch among the top 10 most elderly populations in the UK. A major change arrived in 2019, when Christchurch Borough Council was dissolved and the town became part of the new Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP), but the town’s district identity that was shaped by hundreds of years of history continued to thrive.

By the 17th century, the castle that had been used for such important moments in history was now a ruin. After it was dismantled back in 1651, local people utilised the resources for building material.

Although Christchurch can boast of a rich and royal history, there were some less noble times in Christchurch’s history, not least the towns links to smuggling in the 18th century. The costal location of Christchurch made it ideal for the smugglers. In 1784 the Battle of Mudeford was a notable incident which led to the death of a naval officer after between smugglers amd customs officers.

Today, Christchurch is a place where heritage and modern life sit comfortable side by side. The Priory still stands as a testament to Norman ambition and medieval devotion. The castle ruins whisper stories of survival and the rivers continue to define the towns geography, just like they did for the Saxons and Normans.

Locals and visitors alike stroll along the Quay unaware that Viking ships once threatened those waters. Families picnic in the very same spots that the castle walls once bristled with soldiers, and most visitors wander through the priory not realising they are stepping into a building that has witnessed nearly a thousand years of conflict and community. And even today, place names quietly reflect the towns rich history: Castle street, Church street, Burh Lane (now Bure Lane), Burh Gates (now Bargates) and The Quay.

As the centuries rolled on, Christchurch evolved from a Saxon settlement to a market town of hustle and bustle which further evolved into a riverside community known for its craftmanship, such as fishing (particularly for salmon), brewing, silk stocking knitting and glove making. The industrial revolution brought new opportunities, and the arrival of the railway in the 19th century helped the town connect to the wider world.

During both world wars, Christchurch was active in providing many hospitals for wounded troops and as well as training sites for trench welfare. St Catherine’s hill was a site that was used in both wars, and the airfield ‘Hurn’ (now Bournemouth Airport) had a multitude of anti-invasion defences. The post-war decades brought major development for the town and Christchurch became a place where families and retirees desired.

The late 20th and early 21st centuries saw Christchurch continue to evolve politically. The Local Government Act of 1972 meant that in 1974 the district of Christchurch was established. This new district was granted the status of ‘Borough’ by Royal Charter of Queen Elizabeth II. However, this meant it compromised the existing borough (the act dissolved the original ‘self-governing town’ of Christchurch, along with the adjacent Hurn and Burton parishes) which meant this status also came with a rather large change, the district was now no longer part of Hampshire, but Dorset.

This summer, are your pot plants or garden crying out for your attention?

This time of year, it’s all about TLC for your blooming baskets perennial pots.

Advice from Haskins' Alastair Urquhart

Seasonal temperatures in summer can cause plants to dry out fairly quickly which if left unaddressed can result in a decidedly disappointing array of droopy and dry displays. It only takes a few simple steps to be rewarded with a healthy, colourful and enjoyable garden for the rest of the summer season.

First things first – water!

The importance of watering plants at this time of year is essential and resident expert at Haskins Garden Centres, Alasdair Urquhart, tells us: “Rather than watering little and often, give plants a thorough soak, so moisture reaches the roots where it is needed most.” Watering the plants at particular times of the day is also important, with cooler temperatures meaning water can soak into the soil and not evaporate due to the warm temperatures.

Hanging baskets are notorious for drying out quickly, so special care needs to be given to them. It’s usually good practice to water them until the water runs out of the bottom of the basket and to do this once a day during the warmer peak summer season. It’s difficult to over-water hanging baskets due to the drainage holes at the bottom. Equally because they are hanging and drain well, they also dry out quickly which is why daily watering is recommended.

Something that needs close attention is the containers. Compost dries out much faster than soil in beds and borders. This means when there are hot and mild conditions, pots need to be checked regularly. Urquhart suggests: “If the compost feels dry below the surface, I’d recommend watering until it runs through the drainage holes.” This means the roots grow better and therefore, helps plants during dry and sunny spells. Roots absorb all the water for the plant and hold all of the plant’s nutrients.

When watering plants especially pot plants and hanging baskets, be sure to direct the water to the soil itself rather than just spraying the flowers and leave directly. Many leaves act like an umbrella, directing water away from the soil, which needs the water for the roots underneath. Get your hose or watering can under the foliage to give the soil a thorough soaking.

Little things to do

Actions requiring little effort can also be taken to help the plants and the garden’s aesthetic.

Urquhart says: “Group pots together and move them into light shade during the hottest part of the day to help them hold moisture for longer. Then add a mulch, such as bark or compost, gravel, or even decorative stone chippings, to keep roots cooler and lock moisture into the soil.” Doing these little things can mean so much for the plants, without really needing to do too much yourself.”

To compost or not to compost?

Garden waste: reap the rewards next year Composting is an efficient way to make use of garden waste.

Any waste ranging from lawn clippings and annual weeds to hedge trimmings and faded flowers can be included. In its most basic form, compost can be formed by just placing all your waste in a pile at the end of the garden and wait for it all to break down. But to truly harness the power of compost, it’s recommended to use a compost bin which allows the waste matter to ‘sweat’ and breakdown more quickly. You can find compost bins at most garden centres or online starting from as little £25 or why not make your own using some old pallets?

Home-made compost adds valuable organic matter and improves soil’s structure, aeration and biodiversity. It also boosts moisture retention as we read earlier. There are two types: Green and Brown. Green composting is soft, leafy garden material which is nitrogen-rich. Brown is dry food waste which is rich in carbon.

Bacteria and microorganisms work best when the balance of green and brown compost is correct. 25-50% should be green and 75-50% should be brown. To make useful compost it can take from six months- to two years for all the elements to fully break down but if you started early this summer, there’s a good chance of having compost for summer next year. @bhlivingdorset

Late-summer tasks

There is another important task that plants require as the summer reaches its end: feeding. Urquhart suggests: “Container plants and hanging baskets use up nutrients quickly, so applying a weekly liquid feed will help them flower strongly right up to the end of summer. Dead-heading also makes a visible difference, extending the length of your flowering season and plant longevity.”

Dead-heading sees dead and dying flowers removed from the flower bed. It helps to improve the aesthetic of the garden but also to push for more blooms. Adding on to this Urquhart says: “Remove faded blooms of roses, dahlias, sweet peas, bedding plants and repeat-flowering perennials regularly, as this redirects the plant’s energy back into new growth and flowers.”

Lovely lawns

Lawns tend to look after themselves during the summer months but be sure to follow a few simple rules. Alasdair advises: “Lawns may need some light maintenance as summer progresses, particularly during dryer weather. Raise the mower blades slightly so the grass is not cut too short longer grass copes better with heat and wear. If the lawn needs watering, soak it well once a week rather than giving it a few light sprinkles, as deeper watering encourages stronger roots.

A change-up

A good opportunity in the late summer months is to think about changing up areas of the garden that are starting to lose their spark and colour. In the middle of the summer, you’ll usually be able to identify what areas of your garden could do with a spruce up or a re-think. On this Urquhart reveals: “Pots are one of the easiest ways to do this because they can be placed exactly where the impact is needed, whether that’s around a patio, by the back door, near a seating area, or in gaps through the borders.”

Additionally, as the garden decides to move towards an autumnal setting, plant selection is very important. Urquhart says: “Dahlias, salvias, rudbeckia, echinacea, asters, and chrysanthemums all bring strong late-season colour, while ornamental grasses add movement and structure as the garden begins to shift towards autumn.”

Ornamental grasses are a more visually appealing type of grass for a particular area rather than just standard turf or lawns. Examples of ornamental grasses could include Blue Fescue, Fountain Grass or for a larger statement the well-known Pampus Grass is an easy addition.

When replanning or rethinking spaces in your garden, think about the pattern or visual effect you’re trying to show. Alasdair gives some helpful pointers here: “Combining upright plants with softer trailing varieties gives the display more depth, while repeating a few colours across different pots helps the space feel considered rather than busy.

Grouping pots in the places you socialise in most, quickly makes the garden feel fuller, brighter, and more welcoming.

Garden waste: DIY or council collection scheme

Composting can take up valuable space and if you have a small garden, it may not be practical. There are also concerns that compost heaps (as opposed to fully enclosed bins) can begin to unwanted wildlife such as rats and mice. (although they can be a favourite hangout for hedgehogs too).

Alternatively, BCP Council offer a garden waste collection service but it’s a service you’ll need to sign up to and pay for.

Better Boscombe.

Boscombe has recently seen more redevelopment and regeneration over recent years than it is perhaps seen in the last decade, but there are bigger plans in the pipeline about to come to life.

Boscombe Woodland Walk (which is where Boscombe meets Pokesdown) saw recent improvements. The project included plans to improve entrances and pathways, install biodiversity initiatives to support local wildlife and also the implementation of community- centred features to create a hub for leisure and relaxation. Some of these plans have already been implemented with a raised wildlife pond built, broken tarmac at Christchurch Road having been replaced with eco-friendly gravel and new stonework and painted gates at the main entrance.

Another example is the range of improvements to the High Street.

The whole project is underway and there have already been some key achievements. Three derelict buildings have been refurbished, including 30/32 Royal Arcade (Boscombe Hub). Furthermore, nine shopfront renovation grants have been issued and three new residential units have been delivered. The improvements have increased activity on the High Street and create a more attractive and resilient environment for businesses.

Moreover, improvements to Boscombe Pier have been seen, with three new or existing businesses moving in or rebranding. Urban Reef, which was acquired in 2022 by Shepherd Neame, reopened in 2022. Saltwater Sauna Bathhouse opened on May 9th 2026 and is the UK’s largest beachfront sauna. Pier View Kitchen (formerly Prom Diner) was completely refurbished and reopened in Spring 2025. It is located West of Boscombe Pier and boasts wonderful sea views. It is part of the BCP Councils’ ongoing Seafront Strategy.

Boscombe is regenerating and reinventing itself. The pier, high street and woodland areas are all examples of this and demonstrate what happens when pro-business planning is implemented - new businesses move in, attracting investment, footfall and creating more jobs for local people. These private businesses have refurbished and redeveloped buildings to make the area more appealing. These are signs that the area is heading in the right direction and there are more exciting development plans still to be implemented.

Boscombe’s biggest regeneration project yet began construction in June. Closely working with residents, businesses and community organisations, since 2020, Better Boscombe has let locals have a say in how investment from the £23 million Bournemouth Towns Fund should be used. A vision has now been achieved, through consultation and planning: to regenerate a nine-hectare brownfield site and create a residential-led mixed-use neighbourhood that meets local needs. This will deliver affordable homes, a purpose-built community centre, new green space, improved public routes and opportunities for local businesses.

The project has also been supported by £13,281,708 of grant funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. The delivery of the scheme was approved by the council in February 2026, with full completion expected by April 2029. The first step was the Hawkwood Road Car Park Closure.

The car park, which is located behind 625 Christchurch Road and 627 Christchurch Road, was closed permanently in July 2025.

The area of the car park, illustrated by a red line, is also now permanently closed (from the 29th May 2026) to support the project.

Phase 1 Phase one is the Hawkwood Road Community Centre which is a community led vision.

A community vision workshop held in January 2023 helped shape the proposed activities and uses for the building. The aim is to create a flexible, welcoming space that supports everything from creative workshops to community events. It will be built on the former Hawkwood Road Car Park. The building will provide 795 square metres of internal floorspace across two storeys and will overlook the new landscaped pedestrian boulevard linking Hawkwood Road with Christchurch Road. The design will create a welcoming space with external seating connecting the building to the surrounding streets and green spaces.

The building is being designed to high environmental performance standards, incorporating principles aligned with Passivhaus energy efficiency. Key eco-friendly features will include fully electric building systems, solar panels on the roof and a highly efficient building fabric to reduce energy demand. The community centre will also be home to many facilities. These include two large community halls, two flexible meeting rooms, a large reception space capable of operating as a community café and generous internal storage. These will provide the centre with numerous activities including: creative workshops, health and wellbeing sessions, drop in advice and support services and room hire for community groups and organisations.

But who will the centre be run by? The building will be run by an experienced not-for profit organisation with organisations invited to demonstrate experience in community facility management and business planning and financial sustainability. The operator will be appointed by an open procurement process and further details will be published as the project processes.

Christchurch Road will be linked by a new pedestrian retail boulevard to the new community centre. Existing narrow alleyways will be replaced by the new route with a wider landscaped walkway featuring trees, seating and improved lighting. Along the boulevard, four retail kiosks will provide space for food and drink outlets, short-term or pop-up businesses and seasonal retail. This will support local enterprise and small businesses whilst increasing activity in the area.

Phase one is expected to run from June 2026 until August 2027 – a total of 14 months.

The demolition of the former WHSmith building is complete and a construction contractor has been appointed (AJC Construction).

Phase 2 Next is Phase Two, which is the Hawkwood Road Housing and Neighbourhood. This will see the area given new affordable homes.

It will deliver 68 new council homes, all at social rent, helping to address local housing need. These homes will be owned and managed by BCP Council and allocated through the Council’s housing register.

The scheme had secured £17.3 million in external funding but the funding was only available for a limited time so the decision was taken to move forward quickly with the plan.

The development itself includes 22 one-bed homes, 16 two-bed homes and 30 three-bed homes. The homes will be arranged across three residential buildings and eight homes will be designed to meet enhanced accessibility standards, with appropriate parking provision.

It is hoped the development will deliver new genuinely affordable homes, new community facilities, new green spaces, investment in the town centre and jobs, both during construction and beyond.

Most importantly, the homes and facilities will be owned and

All properties will include private outdoor space or balconies and the housing development has also been designed to meet Passivhaus performance requirements – creating highly energy efficient homes. This approach will reduce heat loss and energy demand, helping residents benefit from significantly lower heating and energy costs. There will also be ground floor space intended for health or community focused services. BCP Council will be continuing to work with NHS Partners to explore the potential for local health provision and if a healthcare provider is unable to proceed, the space can accommodate other appropriate community-focused commercial uses. This approach will mean the wider housing development can proceed without delay whilst keeping options open for health services.

Finally, there will be a new public park - titled Hawkwood Gardens, created opposite the community centre. Key features of this park will include: Informal play space, a small pavilion suitable for community use, homes overlooking the park to improve safety and visibility, secure gates and CCTV for added security.

AJC Construction will also be contracted for the housing development with SNUG architects continuing as the design team to ensure continuity from the planning stage. Construction is expected to start in August 2026 with the aim of being completed two years later in August 2028. This project is important in allowing the regeneration of a key site in Boscombe to move forward.

IT ENDS HERE – HEIDI PERKS If you are looking for a phycological thriller but with the added bonus of the story being set local to our area then you will not go far wrong with It Ends Here by Bournemouth author Heidi Perks. This is a book that has it all, suspense, drama and intrigue. It’s what I call ‘a great page turner’.

Lies, secrets, betrayal and a gun all meet on one cold early spring morning in a remote boatyard café on the Isle of Wight. Five people enter for what seems is just another ordinary start to the day, not unlike countless cafes up and down the country, but the five are totally oblivious to what was about to unfold before them. Early morning meetings, maybe a coffee with a friend, or even just some quiet time alone - whatever the reasons these five people enter this café, only four will walk out.

It Ends Here is a well set out easy flowing physiological thriller with a great twist which even caught me out, a pulsating read and a book you do not wish to end. As you would expect the characters are not all that they seem, each have their secrets and you spend your time exploring their complex individual lives thinking you have it all worked out only to start doubting yourself by the next chapter.

As well as the intriguing lives of the group of hostages, we also explore the secretive mind of the hostage taker: what has led them to this extreme situation and what led them down a road in which there is no turning back?

Equally confused by the whole situation, we have our dogged Detective, Inspector Aaron Field. He has come over to the Island from Southampton with his colleague Kelly Holden and in a race against time they have to piece together all the loose clues, separating truth from fiction from the information unfolding before them.

The book was a joy to read with the author cleverly twisting and turning the plot throughout the book and it’s not until the very end that we learn what has really happened within the confines of an unassuming Café in a sleepy town in Hampshire.
