the ‘A Breath of Fresh Care’ initiative.

Currently research shows that care home residents in the UK spend an average of just 90 seconds a week in the fresh air.

Getting outdoors can help to improve residents’ sleep, awareness, verbal expression and their memory, as well as encourage people to be active while socialising with others. Similarly, Encore has created a new partnership with Oomph!, which works closely with care and housing services throughout the UK, to support staff and help residents improve their health and fitness, through fun exercises and activities. During the programme, residents and staff at Encore will take

part in a variety of sport, music, relaxation and nature workshops.

Exciting times for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Hello and welcome to the first edition of BH Living magazine. We’re excited to be publishing this new magazine at what will hopefully be a historic time for our three towns. Over 154,000 copies of this magazine are being distributed to residents across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

It’s a historic time because all three towns are on the verge of forming a ‘Super Council’ that will see the existing councils of Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch all become one unitary authority in an effort to save costs and deliver better services for our three towns.

One council should be better equipped to serve the interests of our area, being able to better compete for funding and investment against larger councils and metropolitan boroughs, promote all three towns to tourists bringing much needed revenue into the area and also better serving the interests of us, the residents, who expect value for money from the council tax we pay. It should also see lots of unnecessary levels of administration removed, making the councils more transparent and streamlining services by having better co-operation across the three towns.

Some see the introduction of the single council as a sad day for the individual towns and at the time of going to press, there is a legal challenge that has been issued by Christchurch Council. But the other side of the argument suggests that the three towns will still retain their individual character and history, but just work together under one administration. Whatever your viewpoint, life will go on and we’ll still continue to live in one of the most attractive and desirable parts of the country. Let’s hope that our councils can grasp this opportunity, both for this and future generations.

With summer upon us and the children due to be breaking up for school shortly, many parents will be wondering what to do with the children for six long weeks, but help is at hand on page 16 with some cracking summer holiday activity ideas.

The past few months have seen the use of plastic firmly in the headlines after shocking images were broadcast on BBC’s Blue Planet last year.

In this edition, we take a look at local businesses who are seeking to buck the trend and become ‘plastic neutral’ – page 25 has the details.

BH Living is all about informing and helping people find out what’s going in the three towns and the surrounding area which is why in this and future editions, we’ll be covering subjects such as: accessing the right social care, schools and education news, transport and roads as well as tackling health related issues. What is LGR (Local Government Reform)?

Dorset is home to the 16th largest urban area in the UK: Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, with a population estimated to reach 410,300 by 2019.

Currently, these communities are looked after by nine different authorities. The plan is to replace these authorities with two unitary councils for all of Dorset – one for urban areas (Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole), and one for rural (the rest of Dorset).

The plans for LGR in Dorset were proposed in a document called “Future Dorset”, which was presented to the Secretary of State for Housing Communities and Local Government back in February 2017. The changes became law in June 2018, and it is currently planned that the new councils will be live as of 1st April 2019.

How will this benefit me?

It’s estimated that over the next six years, this new structure will create savings of around £100m.

The idea is that residents will benefit from improved public services as a result of these savings, and ultimately enjoy a more localised service that better suits their needs, making their area an even better place to live and work.

With less overheads, the new councils will have more money to spend on parks, road repairs, libraries, children’s services, and adult social care.

The change is designed to work for all of Dorset, not just part of it. Its goal is to protect local frontline services, generate further economic growth and provide better structure to local councils and the communities they serve.

Do I need to do anything?

Although this process will create a new council for our area, as a resident you will not have to do anything.

Bins will still be emptied, roads will still be maintained, and residents currently in care will continue to be looked after by the people they know and trust.

What changes will I notice?

What will change is the name of the council we pay our council tax to.

Instead of Bournemouth Borough Council, Poole Borough Council and Christchurch Borough Council/Dorset County Council, we will instead pay the new council. It has yet to be named, but is currently known as the BCP Shadow Authority.

It is important to note that the three towns will be as they are now, retaining their unique historical and ceremonial traits.

Yes. Although eight of the nine councils in Dorset all approve the change, this is not quite the case in Christchurch.

The new councils will be established in April 2019, with elections taking place on 2nd May. The form of these elections will be determined in Parliament by statute.

Poole Harbour’s new South Quay is Ship Shape!

May 17th 2018 was a historic day for the Port of Poole, when the new South Quay was officially opened for business by Government Minister Jake Berry.

The estimated project cost was over £10million.

How will this increase in revenue be raised?

1. Project Cargo – an increase in short sea Container Traffic. Larger containers bringing in more raw materials e.g. steel.

Ambitious plans mean Poole is now the fastest growing cruise port in the UK Any port needs to be sustainable and efficient, so embarking on a major restructuring plan meant there had to be a lot of forward planning and many considerations were taken into account. Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC) first embarked on the plan, after they became aware that low cost airlines and the Channel Tunnel had decreased the amount of ferry traffic through Poole by as much as fifty per cent.

They knew this traffic would not return and they needed a plan to increase revenue. They decided the port needed to accommodate bigger ships if it was to have a strong and viable future. After over one hundred consultation meetings with environmental agencies, it was agreed that a large quay would not have a negative effect on the environment.

The go-ahead to build was given. Poole is now the fastest growing cruise port in the UK and the aim is to increase revenue through the port by 25 Per cent. This will ensure it is a sustainable port for the next 20-25 years.

2. Import and export of luxury yachts. South Quay can accommodate specialist ships carrying up to 12 yachts. Sunseeker sell the majority of their yachts abroad. They have previously had to export from Southampton. Now they can use their home port of Poole.

3. Port taxes from cruise ships. The aim is to have at least one cruise ship docked per week. South Quay will be able to accommodate ships with up to 1000 berths.

How will the increased revenue be used?

Poole harbour is a Trust Port which means that there are no owners. It is run by PHC to serve the interests of Poole Harbour. All profits have to be reinvested in the port for the benefit of the stakeholders.

The stakeholders are the marine businesses and the people that use the port. PHC are responsible for maintaining the nature reserves and protecting the wildlife in the harbour. They are also responsible for the cleaning of the beaches and policing of the harbour, so incoming revenue is ploughed back into the port to improve facilities and the environment.

So how will Poole and its residents benefit from South Quay?

Speaking to the Poole Chamber of Trade and Commerce (PCTC), Jim Stewart, CEO of PHC, said that he anticipated that “hundreds of new jobs would be created” over the next few years – primarily as a result of the cruise industry.

There are two types of passengers some use Poole to join their cruise and others are coming to Poole as part of their cruise itinerary. Both types of passenger are expected to bring revenue into the local economy.

PHC are currently working with local businesses to help bring passengers into Poole town centre. Nichola Hibbert, Sales Manager of the Hotel Du Vin, told the PCTC that the hotel was currently working with PHC to arrange “familiarisation trips”.

Cruise passengers can take advantage of special rates at the hotel if they add on a few nights’ stay, either before or after their cruise. PHC are also working on arranging tours of the RNLI, the harbour and the Jurassic Coast all with the aim of keeping passengers in the local area.

South Quay is open for business and is booming!

With more investment coming into the town to improve the visitor experience, residents of Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch will benefit.

Among the plans on the table are a new cinema and also an outdoor roof-top cinema. With an anticipated extra thousand people coming to the town every week, the future looks bright for Poole.

The Astoria

On 31st August 2018 the cruise ship ‘Astoria ‘ will sail from Poole to Honfleur, Rouen and the River Seine.

On the way, passengers will be able to view the Bournemouth Air Festival. This cruise is already full! Mike Hall, Head of Marketing for the operator Cruise and Maritime Voyages, said ‘Poole was added to our portfolio this year and such has been the response that we will be returning again in 2019’.

There is still space on the cruise around the British Isles on 03/09/18.

Or, if you fancy just one night and a gala dinner aboard you can sail around the Isle of Wight and disembark the next day in Portsmouth - all for £89!

Bournemouth and Poole’s answer to ‘Boris bikes’ set to be rolled out this summer Bournemouth Borough Council and Borough of Poole Council will partner with an operator to introduce a revolutionary new bike share scheme, to help alleviate congestion in the area.

Similar to London’s ‘Boris bikes’, the scheme will offer residents and visitors the convenience of a fleet of new bikes available for instant hire across Bournemouth and Poole.

Thanks to advances in technology, the scheme will be app-based, meaning customers will be able to access and unlock bikes with just their smartphone.

Without the need for docking stations, users will be able to enjoy greater flexibility, as they won’t be limited to certain pick up/drop off points. The app will instead advise users of preferred parking locations in high-demand areas, such as stations and shopping centres.

All bikes will be tracked by GPS, so users will be able to quickly and easily locate their nearest bike with just their phone. Once they’re finished, they’ll simply need to slide the lock back into place and park the bike on its side stand.

It couldn’t be easier!

The operator will be required to supply all bikes and equipment, as well as management and maintenance of the service. There will be no initial or ongoing cost to the councils and all equipment must be accredited with the Bikeplus scheme, ensuring all agreed industry safety standards are met.

The scheme will work closely with local businesses to encourage their staff to participate and help ease peak time congestion.

The Bikeability scheme helps teach children how to cycle safely and confidently on the road Bikeability is today’s national cycle training scheme. It’s like cycling proficiency but better! It’s about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today’s roads.

These free courses are part-funded by the Department of Transport, and take place at Kings Park, teaching children cycling skills for all confidence levels.

Save water and money

this summer Here at Bournemouth Water we’re passionate about using water wisely – and we do all we can to encourage our customers to do this too.

We all use water without really thinking about it. Every time we turn on the tap, flush the toilet or put the washing machine on, we’re using a precious and limited resource.

The good news is that by following a few simple measures we can easily cut water wastage, save money and protect the environment.

This is particularly true in the garden. It’s easy to maintain a blooming garden while being water wise!

Here’s our top 10 summer water-saving tips:

Why save water?

If you pay for your water through a meter, your bill may go down.

Less water is taken from the rivers Stour and Avon, which helps our local wildlife during dry spells, when water sources are not being replenished.

Use a bucket instead of a hose to wash your car.

Always water your garden in the early morning or late afternoon as this is when evaporation rates are lowest.

Use mulch and bark in your garden, which can help reduce evaporation by up to 75%.

Water butts are a great way of catching and storing rainwater – which is free! Use your rainwater for watering the garden, washing the car, cleaning paths and windows and topping up ponds (fish prefer rainwater).

Lots of people use bath or dishwater on their gardens.

This is a brilliant idea – but remember it should be used immediately and never on fruit and veg.

Adjust your lawnmower to cut your grass longer – this will shade the roots from the sun.

It’s okay if the lawn goes brown, this helps it to build up resistance and recover immediately after rainfall.

Leave grass cuttings on the lawn – they will form a mulch that protects and feeds the grass.

Sprinklers can use as much as 1,000 litres of water per hour!

That’s more than a family of four uses in a whole day. Use a watering can or hose instead.

If you do use a hosepipe, attach a trigger nozzle. This will halve the amount of water you use and help direct the water to the roots of your plants. Don’t forget to turn off at the tap when you’re done.

Add water-retaining gel to the lower half of compost in planters and hanging baskets.

Keeeeep dancing!

Charity set up to support Ensbury Park Library EnPaLS – the Ensbury Park Library Supporters group – is a registered charity that aims to establish and maintain the library as a key community hub for Ensbury Park residents.

EnPaLS was formed in December 2016 with the key aim of funding the building of a community room with a small kitchen, disabled access, and toilet facilities.

Geoff Budden, a trustee for the charity, says the need for facilities like this has been obvious for quite some time. “Apart from the hall at St. Thomas’ Church, there is little provision for meeting places for smaller community groups in Ensbury Park.”

Fundraising events usually take place every month, and include all age groups with events so far including bingo, a Midsummer Fayre, afternoon tea, fish and chip lunches, quizzes, and live music from a local Ukulele band.

With the new series of Strictly Come Dancing due to start in early September, all eyes will be watching to see who wins the prestigious glitter globe this year. There’s no official word about the line-up this year and announcements are usually made at the end of August.

If you fancy yourself as the next Anton du Beke or Karen Clifton, then the range of dance classes at Pavilion Dance may be just the ticket. There are classes to suit all ages and abilities, from absolute beginners to ballroom big-shots – and everything in between.

Simple ways to keep your home safe when you go on holiday We all love going away on holiday, but with the excitement and stress of packing, it can be easy to forget to make sure our homes are safe while we’re not there.

Bournemouth Soup Challenge raises money for local community projects

Here are a few simple things you can do for extra peace of mind:

Earlier this year, the Bournemouth Soup Challenge took place at St. John’s Church in Moordown.

Don’t broadcast the fact that you’re away. For example, by sharing on social media that you won’t be home, or changing your outgoing voicemail message to say you’re on holiday.

What is the Soup Challenge?

BMTH SOUP is a community dinner that creates microgrants for local projects in Bournemouth. Donating £5 gets you a delicious bowl of homemade soup, some tasty bread and an all-important vote. Four projects then pitch their ideas to win the money raised at the door.

If possible, ask a close friend or family member to pop round from time to time to check in.

Even doing small things like turning on lights or opening curtains will give the appearance of some activity going on in the house.

One of these projects was Scampaks, a scheme designed to help residents stay savvy and avoid falling prey to scams. Founded in 2015 by the North Bournemouth Crime Prevention Panel, as a response to the increasing prevalence of scams targeting vulnerable people, the packs contain clear information to help identify and deal with scammers. Also included are Police-style notebooks, small magnifying glasses to check IDs, scan-proof credit card holders, torches and UV pens.

If this isn’t possible, you could set some lights on a timer, or ask a neighbour to park in your space.

Though Scampaks lost out to the equally deserving Repair Café, an anonymous donor very kindly matched the amount raised, for the other three participants to share.

Lastly – this sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised – don’t leave a key under the mat! Only leave keys with friends or neighbours you trust implicitly.

SUMMER SAFETY

Stay safe this summer Sunshine, fresh air and long balmy evenings make summer a wonderful time – especially when you’re lucky enough to be by the sea, like we are!

Swim England and the RNLI also run free Swim Safe classes for children.

But it’s important to stay safe as well.

Keep hydrated One of the dangers of being in the heat is becoming dehydrated. Be sure to drink plenty of water, especially if you’re spending the day in a beer garden enjoying a Pimm’s (or three!), as alcohol will dehydrate you even more.

Keep safe in the sea Fortunately, we don’t need to worry about shark attacks, but it’s important to remember to be careful when swimming in the sea.

Be sun-smart We all know that the sun is at its strongest between 10am and 4pm, so where possible, try to stay in the shade, protect your head with a hat, and slather on the sunscreen. You need to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB radiation, so it’s important to

Tackling the baby boom problem

Twynham Primary School is ready to welcome pupils in September

Local schools have been facing an increase in student intakes of almost 50 per cent over the past few years and the demand for school places shows no sign of decreasing anytime soon. According to recent reports, schools such as The Bourne Academy, Bournemouth School, Bournemouth School for Girls, Glenmoor Academy, St Peter’s School and Winton Academy were all over-subscribed.

Much of the extra demand is being put down to soaring birth rates which means local councils are having to create hundreds more primary school places over the next few years.

How the councils are responding As part of the councils plans to provide additional places, they are looking to both create new schools as well as expanding existing primary and secondary schools including Carter Community School in Poole which has seen plans to increase its pupil capacity by 300 places.

Work at a £5.6m primary school in Christchurch has also been completed, ready for the start of the new academic year in September. Twynham Primary School will initially accommodate 150 pupils with a view to increasing this number to 420 at a later date. Councillor Margaret Phipps, local member for Commons division, said: “This is a great day for Christchurch. The additional places this school will provide should help alleviate some of the pressure on local families, offering sufficient school places for the area.”

Bournemouth School for Girls have also revealed plans to potentially help ‘address the need for additional secondary places’ and will hold an open consultation beginning on Tuesday 3rd July.

Whilst these proposed expansions will go a long way to help curtail the deficit of school places, other options are also taking shape. The Department of Education (DfE) has

announced that the Aspirations Academies Trust will open a new school called ‘The Livingstone Academy’ for four to 19-year olds in the Lansdowne area of Bournemouth, on the former Law courts/Police Station site in September 2019.

The vision for the academy is to ‘deliver an authentic education for the 21st century in a high performing Academy for children from the age of four to nineteen’. The Academy will also aim to equip students with the skills required to play an active and successful role in today’s highly competitive, fast-changing digital world. The school will develop a curriculum working closely with digital industries.

New initiative offers emotional support for students in Dorset Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs) are working in primary schools around Bournemouth and Poole, to help children with social skills, self-esteem and emotional well-being.

The ELSA network is made up of teaching assistants, who receive ongoing training from educational psychologists. Emotions and home-life as well as the child’s back ground can all be factors that affect learning. The goal is to provide children with a relevant and well-rounded learning experience that is applicable to their own current situation or emotional state.

Vanessa, an ELSA at St Mark’s Primary School in Bournemouth, believes the key to an enriching school life is support that’s tailored to each student. ELSAs typically provide short-term support to pupils who are experiencing emotional difficulties.

“ELSAs provide children with bespoke mental health intervention, usually for around 6 to 12 weeks. We help them cope with bereavement, anger issues and anxiety, while teaching them to recognise and understand these different emotions and build resilience.”

Vanessa explains that as well as listening and treating children with empathy and understanding, the key to this type of support is consistency. “Children need to have their ‘regular slot’, because that consistency is part of making them feel safe and secure.”

Advice to parents Amy’s advice to parents who feel their child may require additional emotional support is to contact their school and discuss the options available. Vanessa adds that while children will usually be referred by class teachers or parents, they may also sometimes - subject to agreement from their teacher - self-refer if they are struggling emotionally.

Dorset schools lead the way At the moment, this support isn’t available in schools nationwide, but throughout Dorset and the South, ELSA is very popular.

“In Bournemouth we’re quite lucky, in that it’s becoming more the accepted way forward. At St Mark’s, senior leadership is very proactive when it comes to mental health support. It’s not just about the stats - it’s about the whole child.”

Amy, a social worker from Bournemouth has seen the positive impact this type of support can have.

“ELSA support in schools is vital for helping vulnerable children,” she says.

“Children who have difficult home lives often need a place to explore their emotions. Using creative methods, ELSAs give them the opportunity to do this.”

As well as ELSA, many schools throughout Dorset offer similar provisions, such as Nurture Groups.

Ultimately, Vanessa tells us, the aim is to help children learn about emotions, without making it feel too much like a lesson. “ We have loads of lovely resources like puppets, board games and craft activities. It’s light-hearted and fun so they actually want to come to us for support.”

Loneliness is fast becoming a significant problem across the UK and it’s no different in Bournemouth. Its damaging to your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. According to a recent report from Age UK, Feeling isolated not only has adverse effects on our mental health, but it can also have negative ramifications on our physical health too.

There are 1.2 million chronically lonely older people in the UK, and over half a million older people can go at least five or six days a week without seeing or speaking to anyone at all. Whilst loneliness can affect any age group, it is predominantly the older generation that are more likely to suffer from loneliness.

Sarah Lloyd, Head of Community Services for Age UK Bournemouth, believes that loneliness is an issue in Bournemouth, due to the local demographic. She says:

“We live in an area which has a high population of elderly people and it is a problem. Loneliness exacerbates existing health conditions that people have, which can make them more confused.”

Potential triggers that can cause loneliness

Loneliness tends to affect the older generation more as they are more likely to have lost loved ones and be living alone. The elderly are also more likely to experience health problems, which can make it harder to get out and about.

All of these can increase feelings of loneliness and isolation. Barbara, who is 85 describes her experience of loneliness: “At my very lowest ebb, I used to walk around the house with a thick fog around me. I think this was because I was so, so lonely. One of the things you miss is a human voice.”

Signs to look out for that might suggest someone is lonely Verbal clues: Your relative/friend might mention that they are feeling a bit lonely. Even if they don’t use the word ‘lonely,’ try to read between the lines. If they talk about not having any friends, wishing they got out more or complain about being stuck at home or having no one to talk to, these are all signs that they might be feeling lonely and could benefit from help.

Changes in behaviour: If they are feeling lonely, they might appear miserable, down or defeated.

They might be tearful, withdrawn or simply not as chatty or social as they used to be. On the other hand, they might talk non-stop whenever they have the opportunity. People who are lonely might want extra physical contact – such as holding onto your arm for longer than necessary, or not wanting to let go of a hug.

Loss of a significant other: People who suffer the loss of a partner might seem to be ‘getting back on their feet’ following a period of intense grief, but this doesn’t mean that everything is ok. Chronic loneliness can set in once they have to get used to life without their partner.

If their partner has recently moved into a care home this could also lead to the same feelings of loneliness.

Unexplained health issues: Someone who is lonely might start to complain about imaginary illnesses – whether consciously or subconsciously - as a way of getting attention.

Health problems: Someone who is lonely might lose weight, lose their appetite or start drinking more alcohol.

If you are worried that a relative or neighbour could be suffering from loneliness, the good news is that there is hope and support out there.

There are several organisations who are fighting the battle against loneliness, ncluding Silver Line, a charity that provides a free and confidential telephone helpline offering information, friendship and advice to older people 24 hours a day.

The Campaign to End Loneliness has joined forces with Pedigree, to launch a new initiative called ‘Dog Dates,’ which aims to match elderly people with dogs in their local area, to help fight loneliness and isolation.

For the people of Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch, Sarah Lloyd says: “There are schemes available in Bournemouth through Age UK, which deliver projects with Bournemouth Council. These take place three days a week, catering for up to 40 people each session, and there is also a scheme which engages older people on a one-to-one basis in their own home.”

Local cafes doing their bit to tackle waste There has been a lot of talk recently about how plastic waste is polluting our oceans and threatening the safety of its inhabitants. Plastic straws are one of the biggest culprits, which has led to a big shift toward using paper or reusable straws. Popular Boscombe café, Boscanova, has made the switch to metal straws.

Care in later life – what are the choices?

As you or a member of your family get older, you may well find yourself discussing what kind of care you might need in the future. There are several options, which can be confusing, but hopefully our guide can help you find the right type of care to suit your needs. Here are the most common options that the majority of people choose from, however if you are not sure what care is best, it’s always best to ask advice.

You can speak to a doctor or GP in the first instance if things are getting on top of you, or speak to your local social services - details are at the end of this article.

Domiciliary care (home care) Home care is provided by a care attendant or carer, not a friend of relative. The carer will typically help with daily tasks around the home and can cover a huge range of different needs.

Care can be provided on an emergency basis, a few times a week, or even on a permanent, live-in basis.

Carers can offer personal care, and help with meal prep, housekeeping, companionship and nursing. All domiciliary care providers in the UK are regulated by the CQC.

Sheltered housing or retirement villages This is a perfect option for someone who is still relatively mobile and doesn’t require round-the-clock care, but wants the safety, reassurance and community that this type of living provides. Sheltered housing typically includes 24-hour emergency help and communal areas for recreation and socialising.

A retirement village offers similar provisions, but there is often a greater emphasis on recreational activities, to increase happiness and wellbeing among residents.

Care homes Care homes offer more support than a retirement village or sheltered housing. The level of care can range from personal (which aids with practical tasks like getting up, washing and eating) to nursing, which offers medical care from onsite nurses, and support with conditions such as dementia.

A guide to choosing the right care for you Deciding where to get the best care to suit you is important, whether that be residential care or a nursing home. It’s important that the care you choose offers what’s best for you in terms of cost, lifestyle and a sense of community.

Local care provider Care South recently published a few helpful tips to bear in mind for choosing the right care:

D o your research – It’s important to explore all the options, so that you feel confident you’ve made the decision that’s right for you. Every care home is different.

Ask lots of questions – A good starting point is asking the homes to send you a brochure with more information. It’s likely that they will need to carry out a full assessment to give you an exact price, but they should be able to tell you their price ranges for the levels of care they offer.

Mungo Jerry to headline Poole Harbour Festival Poole Harbour Festival is set to return to Harbourside Park this month, with an exciting line-up of live music including 70s icons, Mungo Jerry, famous for the 1970 number one hit ‘In the Summertime’

Oasiss and Stereoironics take to the stage on Saturday, alongside ska band Rat Race, dance covers act Filta, DJ Martyn the Hat, and locals Chris Payn, Sixteen String Jack, and 27 Days.

The event, which runs from Friday 27th-Sunday 29th July, will showcase 30 live acts across three stages, artisan street food, real ales and craft beers, children’s entertainment, local produce and crafts.

Included in the programme of free children’s entertainment are Mr Merlin, Krazy Kev, the Made for Animals Show, and circus workshops.

UK’s first dedicated Prosecco festival is coming to Bournemouth!

Festival organiser, Ben Dyas, says, “Poole Harbour Festival is something the whole family can enjoy together. It’s a great day and a fun-filled night out that doesn’t finish too late”.

Mungo Jerry, whose singer Ray Dorset lives in Westbourne, will headline the Sunday night line-up, sharing the stage with Chasing Mumford (the UK’s top Mumford & Sons tribute band) and popular local groups Mother Ukers, and the Jimmy Hillbillies.

On Friday night the stage will play host to tribute bands Foo Fighters GB and Really Hot Chilli Peppers, as well as local acts All Funked Up, Xander & the Keys, and Punk on Your Hits.

The perfect event for fans of fizz, Bournemouth’s Prosecco Festival runs from 13th-14th July at the Pavilion.

Tickets start from £12.50 per person, and include a free keepsake glass. On arrival, you’ll be able to purchase tokens to be redeemed on drinks, including cocktails.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy live music and purchase delicious Italian street food – the ideal pairing for a lovely, crisp glass of bubbly.

ENTERTAINMENT Poole Harbour Boat Show enjoys another successful year Over 30,000 visitors lined the Town Quay for what has been hailed a huge success by the event or organiser, Poole Harbour Commissioners. The event, which saw a record number of boats in the water, continues to be the biggest ever free to attend Boat Show on the South Coast.

Kerrie Gray, Boat Show Manager commented “Whilst most other boat shows charge for entry, Poole’s is free of charge.

Open access attracts not only significant numbers of enthusiasts but also those who are new to the market place, keen to learn which boats and watersports suit their lifestyle in a relaxed and approachable environment, helping to encourage blood into the marine leisure sector.”

The show played host to more than 250 exhibitors, transforming the Poole Quay and Poole Quay Boat Haven into a free showcase of sail and motorboats of all sizes, tall ships, RIBs, outboard engines, clothing, water sports activities and marine equipment. Visitors also enjoyed two nights of spectacular fireworks, a parachute display from the REME Lightning Bolts Army display team and live music from the ‘Sunseeker Sessions’ music stage.

Following on from the success of the show, Poole harbour Commissioners have confirmed that the Poole Harbour Boat Show will be back next year on 7th, 8th and 9th June 2019.

Headline act announced for this year’s Stompin’ on the Quomps jazz festival Pee Wee Ellis, tenor saxophonist and musical director of soul legend James Brown’s classic 1960s bands, is the headline act for the 24th Stompin’ on the Quomps. He also co-wrote ‘Cold Sweat’ and ‘Say it Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud’, spent several years working with Van Morrison, and was featured in the BBC Jazz Proms last year.

His Funk Assembly line-up includes top British jazz musicians Dennis Rollins MBE (trombone), Tony Remy (guitar), Gareth Williams (piano), Laurence Cottle (bass) and Mark Mondesir (drums). The main stage will also play host to vocalist

Emily Saunders, local blues band Zoe Schwarz Blue Commotion, Sound of Blue Note, and the ever-popular Taverners Big Band.

The Emerging Talent Stage will feature some new names, including Susie Kimber’s Hot Bean Trio, The Yellow Bear Quintet, and a return visit from The Daryl Ford Organ Trio. Stompin’ are also presenting outstanding British jazz singer, Claire Martin OBE, at The Regent Centre, Christchurch, on Wednesday 1st August.
