Welcome to springtime, it feels a long time coming after the wettest start to a year since records began. I feel like we’ve earned the right to some lovely spring weather!

I hope you enjoyed our last winter edition and our article encouraging readers to consider volunteering in 2026 inspired you to take up a volunteering role. We’re hoping to do a follow-up article later in the year and would love to hear from you if you’ve made the step into volunteering – what was it like starting out? Do you enjoy it? What do you get out of volunteering? Drop me a line at: editor@bhliving.co.uk and let me know!

Whilst putting together the content for this edition, I was struck with how, as a society, we are all so reliant on each other. Community only works when we all work together or it breaks down quite quickly. However over recent years, it's felt like that 'society' has become increasingly self-centred and self-absorbed, which probably explains why the issue of loneliness in the UK has reached epidemic proportions.

But as I sifted through the many submissions for articles and stories for this edition, I became aware that there are still many, many people in our communities who are indeed 'looking out for each other' and giving back to society; whether it’s a keen 80 year old swimmer deciding to swim 50 miles in aid of charity, or a special inflatable ‘seaside scramble’ organised for families to raise funds for the very important Air Ambulance, or perhaps simply some positive words spoken to aspiring girls from a successful local footballer. Although there may seemingly be many selfish people in our society who are only looking out for themselves, there are undoubtedly many more who put the effort in to try to make our little corner of the world a better place.

Indeed, this very magazine you are holding is delivered free through the doors of local homes, in an effort to deliver news, information and even inspiration across the BCP conurbation. But BH Living receives no public funding and is only made possible through the support of advertisers (and also some hard work and long hours from the small editorial team). We even welcome students from Bournemouth University and local schools to contribute to the magazine, giving them the chance to experience working in the media first hand. Hopefully we can play a small role in inspiring the next generation. Thank you to all our advertisers for helping to support an essential source of information for BCP residents.

Turn your food waste into energy Recycle more and waste less

We turn your food scraps into energy, so your leftovers can light up homes!

Food waste collections are being extended to every household across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole from 6 April.

Why we are making these changes We want to recycle more and waste less. Around 30% of the waste in a typical household rubbish bin is food. Separating your food waste into your kitchen caddy helps to cut down the amount of waste that ends up in landfill or other disposal sites – reducing the amount of harmful greenhouse gases in our environment.

Separating your food waste also means your rubbish bin will be less full and smell fresher.

• charge a tablet five times • power a fridge for 18 hours

Turn your food waste into energy We collect your food waste weekly in a special truck, taking it to a recycling plant in Dorset. There it is broken down to create a type of renewable gas (a clean energy source made from food scraps).

This renewable gas is then used to make electricity, which goes back into the national grid.

The process also produces a rich soil booster that supports local farms to grow crops.

UK households throw away on average £700 of edible food every year!

How does it work?

All you will need to do is empty any food waste eg, plate scrapings, peelings and tea bags into your kitchen caddy. Then empty it into your outdoor food waste bin ready for collection. Remember, no amount is too small!

More and more households across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole already use their caddy – join them and make a difference.

Hengistbury Head Activity Centre reopening soon Hoping to return to its former glory, the Hengistbury Head Outdoors Activity Centre is being brought back to life after a 99-year lease was signed between the community group Hengistbury Head Outdoors (HHO) and BCP Council. The education centre, located in Christchurch Harbour, was closed during the pandemic but never reopened as the main building was deemed unsafe for public use by the BCP Council. The former Marine Training Centre is now in the final phase of renovation with the project moving towards reopening this spring, but the final push depends on community support.

Hengistbury Head Outdoors was set up as a Charitable Community Benefit Society in 2023, with the aim to restore the site. They gained ownership through a Community Asset Transfer (CAT) from BCP Council on 24 February 2025.

Chair of Hengistbury Head Outdoors, Mark Merritt, said: “I’m passionate about bringing the old Marine Training Centre back to life and making it thrive again. With the help of a talented team and an incredible group of volunteers, we’re turning possibility into reality. I truly believe this will be a joy for individuals, families and friends for generations to come."

To open fully this spring, donations and ‘community share’ investment are needed. The HHO have organised fundraisers, one being an upcoming Gala dinner with all proceeds being invested into the centre.

HHO will be a year-round wellbeing hub, offering accessible activities for children, families and older people alike, from water sports to community gatherings. Over £750,000 has already been raised and more than 1,000 members are backing the project. As it’s a Community Benefit Society, all surpluses earned will be reinvested back into the hub, supporting future programmes and environmental care.

Each contribution received will go towards the costs of completing the renovation, ensuring the centre can open its doors to everyone. There are more ways to get involved through volunteering and giving goods or services, for more information, visit: https://www.hengistbury.org/.

Care South named top care home group for sixth consecutive year The team at residential and care at home provider, Care South, are celebrating after being rated as a top care home provider for the sixth consecutive year. It has been named one of the UK’s Top 20 Care Home Groups in the Mid-Large size group category at the Care Home Awards 2026.

Recognition is based on reviews from carehome.co.uk, where Care South achieved a rating of 9.8/10.

Simon Bird, CEO of Care South, said: “This is a very proud collective achievement for all our care home teams who go above and beyond to ensure our homes are warm, welcoming places where residents feel cared for, respected and supported as individuals. We work closely with residents, their families and friends to listen and act on any feedback to ensure that we are always doing what is best for their loved ones. Insight into award-winning bus operation as SWRAC students visit Morebus in Poole Students from South West Regional Assessment Centre (SWRAC) learnt about the workings of an award-winning bus depot, with a visit to Morebus in Poole. SWRAC, based in Wimborne, works with young adults between 16 to 30 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Students had been studying transport and a group of them had a tour of the local bus operator’s depot.

“I had great pleasure in showing the group the inner workings of our bus operation,” said Luke Williams, Morebus service delivery manager.

“The students saw, first-hand, our training operation. They had the opportunity to talk to one of our driver trainers about what it takes for a new driver to be ready to transport people across the region.”

Hannah Jones, activities assistant at SWRAC, added: “I’d like to thank Morebus for such an informative tour of their awardwinning depot. It gave our students a real insight into how a bus company works, and they were all buzzing for the rest of the day and really enjoyed their time in Poole.”

82-Year-old swims 50 miles for Ukraine An 82-year-old swimmer has launched a jawdropping 50-mile swimming fundraiser for charity 'New Forest for Ukraine' (NFFU). Julian Lindsey Clark from Selsey is diving back in for a remarkable cause. The fundraiser Julian Lindsey Clark came as the world marked four years since Russia invaded Ukraine effectively triggering the start of the war.

Clark will swim a mile a week continuing his unwavering support for Ukrainian families affected by the ongoing war.

Mandy Haynes, Lead Trustee for NFFU, said: “The war in Ukraine has now entered its fifth year. The need for support on the ground has never been greater. Jules’ amazing swimathon for 2026 will not only raise valuable funds but hopefully help us keep the plight of the Ukrainian people in the spotlight.”

Explaining his latest challenge, he said "This is a fresh approach to my fundraising. I try to make every stroke a thought or prayer for displaced, suffering Ukrainian families."

Despite the weather keeping him out of the sea so far this year, 'Jules' has already complete six miles in a swimming pool. When weather improves he hopes to complete his swimathon at Selsey beach.

While family and friends have generously supported his previous swimming challenges Clark is now hoping to throw the fundraising net farther afield and obtain sponsorships from companies and individuals. Shopping Centre raises vital funds for Dorset youth

Mosaic Family Support

The Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole raised over £37,500 in 2025 for its two Charity Partners and other local causes.

Mosaic Family Support, a children's bereavement charity, and MYTIME Young Carers, a support charity for young carers in Dorset are The Dolphin's selected Charity Partners from 2025 to the end of 2026. After the first year of partnership, both charities received a donation of more than £8,000.

The Dolphin's donation will help fund a series of Mosaic Family Support's bereavement cafes at East Dorset schools, creating safe spaces for young people to come together and share their experiences of grief. The cafes create welcoming environments for students who may be coping with the death of a loved one.

Carmen Davies, Community Manager at The Dolphin, added: “We are thankful for the ongoing generosity of our community and for those who continue to donate what they can to help others.

“As we enter the second year of our chosen charity partnerships, we have a number of charity focussed events and community initiatives that we look forward to sharing in due course.”

Burglar who targeted elderly women in Bournemouth jailed that he painted her fence a few years ago and it needed doing again. The victim had realised her purse was missing after he had left. Her bank card was used a short time later to make fraudulent transactions.

A third incident occurred in a similar manner in the Kinson area on Monday 23rd December 2024. The burglar claimed that his child had lost his football in their garden. After he left the property, she realised that her purse was missing.

A prolific burglar who stole from homes of elderly women has been jailed following an investigation by the Dorset Police Neighbourhood Crime Team.

On Thursday 21st November 2024, a man knocked on the door of a bungalow in the Kinson area and stepped inside the property. He told the victim that he could fix her guttering and then asked for a drink. As the victim went to the kitchen, he entered the bedroom and stole a handbag that contained bank cards, which were later used to make fraudulent transactions.

A few days later on Monday 25th November 2024, a man spoke to the victim of another address in the Kinson area and told her

Following an investigation by the Neighbourhood Crime Team, 33-year-old Thomas Harold Coker of Ringwood was arrested and charged. He was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday 13th February 2026 to six years in prison.

Police Constable Ted Carlton, of the Neighbourhood Crime Team, said: “Coker targeted vulnerable elderly women and distracted them in order to steal their bank cards from inside their home.

“I am pleased that through our investigation we were able to identify Coker as the person responsible and hold him to account for his actions.”

East Cliff stabilisation works expected to begin in September

East Cliff stabilisation project

Later this year, BCP Council will begin work to stabilise the East Cliff, after a significant cliff slip in 2016 damaged the East Cliff lift and surrounding area.

The East Cliff stabilisation project will restore access to the promenade and is funded using a £3 million grant from the government to make the area of the promenade below the cliff safe.

Subject to consents, works are expected to start in September 2026. Once underway, it’s expected to take around eight months to complete, depending on weather and final engineering solutions.

Councillor Richard Herrett, Portfolio Holder for Destination, Leisure and Commercial Operations said: “Stabilising East Cliff is a major project which will help safeguard our seafront, protect nearby roads, homes and hotels, and restore access to this section of the prom for residents and visitors. This investment is about securing the future of one of our most iconic coastal landmarks and enhancing what residents and visitors love about Bournemouth’s coast.”

The East Cliff sits within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its geological and ecological value, and the project is being undertaken in consultation with Natural England specialists.

Have your say on updated plans to reduce congestion and improve bus reliability in Purewell BCP Council is inviting residents, businesses and community groups to have their say on proposals to improve traffic flow and bus reliability along Purewell – a key route used by more than 46,000 bus journeys each year.

Following feedback and further discussion with key stakeholders the Council has developed proposals which include: • The strategic removal of some low-usage parking sections in the daytime to establish passing places which will improve traffic flow for all road users.

• Current evening, overnight and Sunday parking provision remain unchanged.

• Additional parking provision where available.

• Busiest parking sections near to shops remain unchanged.

Councillor Andy Hadley, Cabinet Member for Climate Response, Environment and Energy, said: “Residents told us they wanted a balanced approach that keeps the area moving while protecting access to homes and businesses. These updated proposals reflect that feedback. By improving traffic flow and making bus journeys more reliable, we can help everyone – whether they travel by bus, car, bike or on foot – while supporting local shops and reducing congestion for the long term”.

Dorset Police seeking a special type of Officer Dorset Police are looking for individuals to join them as special constables and help make the county safer for everyone. Candidates will need to be able to give at least 16 hours each month and have a heart for helping keep local communities safe.

The campaign seeks to recruit new and transferring special constables to join in September 2026, with a further intake planned for March 2027.

“This is a really exciting time for the Special Constabulary,” says Acting Chief Officer Ben Deeks. “We have just launched the Special Constable Learning Programme (SCLP), which provides a training and development pathway to all new and existing special constables.”

South West records lowest rate of flytipping in England The South West has recorded the lowest rate of fly-tipping in the country.

Recent figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) show that between April 2024 and March 2025, the South West had just nine incidents per 1,000 people.

Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said “I’m pleased that DEFRA’s latest statistics show the South West has the lowest rate of fly-tipping incidents in the country for the second year running. Since the introduction of a dedicated ‘fly-tipping enforcement officer’, fixed penalty notices issued for waste crime have increased by 78%.

Sidwick has previously campaigned for tougher penalties and increased funding for police in rural areas to combat waste crime. He has also given evidence to the House of Lords Environment & Climate Change Committee on the issue.

Beach hut bookings now open From Sandbanks to Southbourne, beach huts are again available for booking. BCP Council has opened beach hut bookings for the spring and summer season. For 2026, weekly and fixed‑period hire options can be booked online. Prices start from £119 per week, subject to availability and time of year.

Bus journey times along this stretch are affected too, with the two‑minute journey between Purewell Cross Roundabout and Stony Lane taking over 13 minutes in some cases. This disruption can cause services to be unreliable, reducing passenger confidence in using these services and increasing their cost to operate.

The huts are equipped with electricity and water with ‘Walk-in’ same‑day beach hut bookings available at selected locations from just £25, subject to availability. These can be booked in person at the Tourist Information Centre at Bournemouth Pier Approach.

Primary pirouettes at the Pavilion The Ocean Theatre recently hosted a unique Dance Festival especially for local primary schools. The ‘Primary Dance Festival’ featured 12 schools from the BCP area and was supported

by Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW) in collaboration with Bournemouth School Games. The event featured pupils from years 3 and 4 performing original routines inspired by the theme ‘Once Upon a Dance’, which brought storybooks and fairy tales to life through movement and imagination.

Across the two days the theatre was filled with big smiles, wonderful choreography and the sound of enthusiastic, supportive applause. It gave many children the chance to perform for the first time in a real theatre. Each performance day ended with a fun and energising workshop.

Phoebe Maylen, from Bethany Juniors said “The children grew in confidence and were very proud of performing on a professional stage. They also developed teamwork, resilience and a real sense of achievement from working towards a shared goal.”

Following the festival’s success, it’s set to return next year with the theme ‘Back in Time’.

Dorset Police takes proactive approach to tackle child sex abuse As part of a ‘national child sexual abuse intensification week’, Dorset Police’s Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT) made six arrests during the week and undertook a series of safeguarding visits.

Action carried out during the week included dispatching officers to Gatwick Airport to arrest a suspect in connection with alleged sexual offences involving a child, visiting a school to speak with a child following a third-party report of a sexual offence and meeting with partners around concerns over the care of a three-year old child.

Work on other ongoing investigations also saw officers liaising with partner forces and arranging to speak with victims to progress their cases. Detective Superintendent Jim Beashel, of Dorset Police, said: “This week of activity is just a snapshot of the work that we are constantly undertaking to ensure vulnerable children are protected and perpetrators of child sexual abuse are held to account.

“In an increasingly digital world, we are also working to combat online abuse and raise awareness amongst young people of the risks they face online.

“We all have a role to play in tackling child abuse and we would urge anyone with concerns or information relating to offences of this nature to please report it to us.”

Anyone with information or concerns that a child is being sexually abused can report it via the Dorset Police website or via 101.

Specially trained police officers will then be assigned to investigate.

6.74 per cent tax increase passed

by BCP Council As Council Tax bills begin to arrive through doors, residents are likely to see a rise in this year’s bill. BCP Council has set its annual budget at £452 million for the 2026/27 financial year, including a 6.74% council tax increase and £14 million in savings.

The budget addresses significant financial pressures, including reduced government funding and rising service demands.

Residents in Dorset will see that the part of their tax (called a precept) supporting local policing has also risen. Dorset’s Police and Crime Panel recently approved the increase meaning an average Band D household in BCP will pay an extra £15 a year for policing.

The 6.74% overall bill increase for a Band D property equates to an extra £10.42 per month. With the majority of funding directed towards adult and children’s social care. The budget also prioritises the continuation of day-to-day services that residents rely on, including waste collections, transport and housing. It also protects valued non‑statutory services that directly benefit local communities, such as beach lifeguards and public toilets.

Despite the increase, Council Tax bills in the BCP area remain below the average for similar councils.

The decision to increase the policing precept followed a survey from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, in which 1,653 people responded, with 74% agreeing that Dorset Police requires additional funding.

Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner, David Sidwick said: “Asking the residents of this county to pay more is not something I take lightly, but to my utter frustration I have been left with no choice. This was the only option the government afforded me.

Without raising the precept, the service Dorset Police would be able to provide, would be significantly adversely affected.

“Dorset remains one of the safest counties in the country, with crime falling, positive outcomes on the rise, knife crime falling and anti-social behaviour at its lowest level for 16 years. Our county is and will continue to be a safe place to live, work and visit.”

Dorset Police Chief Constable Amanda Pearson said: “Despite financial challenges ahead, Dorset Police remains fully committed to keeping Dorset safe for everyone and protecting services.

“An increase in precept is welcome. It means the Force can continue to reduce crime, support victims and witnesses, and keep people safe, but it also means further savings and difficult choices will still need to be made.”

96.8% of children get a preferred secondary school place 96.8% of all families living in the BCP area have been offered a place at one of their preferred schools according to BCP Council, with 86% receiving an offer for their first preference. A total of 3772 families living in the BCP area applied for a secondary school place before the deadline of 31 October 2025. All children of parents in the BCP area who applied by the national deadline have been offered a secondary school place for September 2026.

Councillor Richard Burton, Portfolio Holder for Children and Young People, BCP Council said: “I’m delighted that so many families across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole have received an offer at one of their preferred secondary schools this year.

“Starting secondary school is a milestone for every young person, and we work hard to make this process as smooth and supportive as possible for families”.

Work to begin on new Winton Neighbourhood Health Centre Winton Health Centre stopped providing patient clinics in 2023 but, thanks to a £1.2 million NHS investment, it will soon host a GP practice and community health services once more. Dorset HealthCare, NHS Dorset and the Banks and Bearwood Medical Practice are leading the project and works to revamp the existing Alma Road site are set to be completed by summer 2026.

Banks and Bearwood GP partner Dr Yasser Kerim said: “This is an exciting development for the Winton community.

The new health centre will provide modern, high-quality facilities that will allow patients to access a wide range of services close to home. We’ll also be able to provide more appointments, meaning people can be seen more quickly.”

Children invited to trial new asthma inhaler University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) is looking for children aged 6 to 11 years old with asthma to test a new inhaler that could improve control and help reduce attacks.

The BCP ‘Green Spaces’ team have been working to improve and repair local children’s play areas, with the aim of putting play spaces back at the heart of communities as part of BCP Council’s multi-million ‘Plan for Play’ strategy. The ambitious vision is the Council’s largest ever investment into play repairs and refurbishments and will see improvements at more than 120 play spaces.

The Green Spaces team of landscape architects, project managers and operational colleagues who inspect and install equipment are regularly out in play spaces and parks, whether surveying a site and discussing improvements with users, or installing new swing seats and roundabout bearings.

More than 600 residents took part in a consultation last summer and that feedback has directly influenced plans. The multi-year refurbishment strategy, Plan for Play, will see £4.4million into more than 120 play areas across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

There has been major refurbishment at Queen’s Park – including a new fort and improved accessibility and early improvements at Moordown Rec and Mallard Road, guided by resident priorities and additional funding unlocked through partners and stakeholders.

Councillor Andy Hadley, portfolio holder with responsibility for parks and gardens, said: “We’ve now been able to publish a revised improvement plan, inspired by the ideas from local children, young people and families, outlining the major upgrades scheduled for the next year – alongside a playground-by-playground update on what work will be carried and during which phase of investment.

“In the coming months there will be full-scale replacement and refurbishments at Treasure Island, Anchor Close, Kings Park, Mallard Road and Noyce Gardens – as well as repairs and improvements at dozens of other sites across our three towns.”

“We’re also exploring further funding opportunities and supporting community groups who want to get involved.”

Councillor Sandra Moore added: “We know that what matters most to communities is not necessarily our overall plans but specifically about the play spaces they and their families use the most: that’s why we’re making sure we share regular updates highlighting work as and when it happens.

“Together, our team is creating welcoming, imaginative and inclusive play spaces for children and families to enjoy for generations to come – and I’m really proud of how we’re transforming local play spaces to better serve their communities.”

The new inhaler would be a combination inhaler which is currently used in older children and adults. Asthma symptoms and attacks are normally treated with two inhalers, where one briefly opens the airways, and the other prevents another attack. The combination inhaler contains both a long-lasting reliever and preventer steroid medicine, which aims to relieve immediate symptoms.

After an initial screening visit via phone, children will be randomly assigned to two groups; one with the new inhaler and the other using the current inhaler.

It has been known for some time that AMD starts with a build up of waste products accumulating within the Retinal layers called Drusen, that over time cause the Retina to distort and either scar (Dry AMD) or for the fragile blood vessels to leak (Wet AMD). Both of these can be debilitating for the patient because it affects the central vision, making any detailed visual task very difficult. Using Low Level Light Treatment (LLLT), special wavelengths of light are used to excite the cells within the Retina, encouraging a reduction of the Drusen, and reducing the risk of sight threatening changes.

Police crackdown on commercial vehicle safety

very driver of a commercial vehicle has a responsibility to know how to keep their vehicle safe and meet the necessary legal requirements and Dorset Police’s traffic officers recently took park in a national initiative focusing on commercial vehicle safety to ‘drive home the point’.

As part of a two-week national campaign, officers from the Roads Policing Team and Commercial Vehicle Unit were proactively engaging with commercial vehicle drivers to ensure that their vehicles were loaded correctly and did not pose a risk to other road users. This involved two targeted enforcement days of action, working alongside the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

Between Monday 26 January and Sunday 8 February 2026, 64 motorists were dealt with for a variety of offences including driving without insurance, having an insecure load and driving at excess speed. The Camera Safety Team was also deployed across the twoweek period and identified 81 commercial vehicles travelling over the speed limit.

Police Sergeant Dave Cotterill, of the Roads Policing Team, said: “This targeted work was carried out as part of our continuous efforts to keep the roads safe and reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured in a road traffic collision.”

“These results show why road safety campaigns like this are still so important,” added, Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner, David Sidwick. There is no excuse for any of the behaviour displayed by these drivers during this initiative and I hope it sends a very clear warning we will not be tolerate anything which puts road users in Dorset at risk."

Rob Mitchell, AFC Bournemouth’s Commercial Director, said about the deal: “We are incredibly proud to strengthen our partnership with Vitality.

An unsafe vehicle stopped during the 2 week campaign

Forest Holme Hospice Charity is looking for participants to take part in the Poole Park Dragon Boat Festival, taking place on Saturday 6th June in Poole Park. The event is open to teams of 17 people made up of 16 paddlers and one drummer, who will race along a 200-metre course in three timed heats with the fastest earning a place in the grand finale.

Claire Cooper, Events & Challenges Manager at Forest Holme Hospice Charity, said, “Events like the Dragon Boat Festival bring people together in such a positive and uplifting way. Every team that takes part for Forest Holme will be helping us continue to provide care, comfort and support to patients and families when they need it most. Last year we even had our very own team of nurses, consultants and charity staff and it was such a fun day with a real sense of community.”

Hospice continue to provide care and support to patients and families across Poole, Wimborne and Isle of Purbeck.

Participants must be aged 12 or over, with a minimum of 12 paddlers required to remain competitive. Full training and safety support will be provided on the day, making the event accessible for beginners as well as experienced crews.

WOMENS FOOTBALL T For girls in Dorset, pathways are becoming clearer. Clubs like Poole Town Ladies and Queens Park Ladies are helping them develop from youth to adult levels. The Dorset Youth League now includes girls in all of its leagues, from mixed-gender competitions to girls-only teams spanning under-9s to under-17s. School participation has also increased dramatically. Ninety per cent of schools around England now offer equal support for girls’ football in PE lessons at Key Stages 2 and 3 (ages 7–14), up 31% since the 2020/21 season.

Women’s football in England has always been a hot topic but after the Euro’s final just last summer where England defeated Spain, the team cemented themselves not only in all our hearts but also as the best in Europe. A tense penalty shoot-out saw campaign favourites Spain lose to the Lionesses.

Women’s football is no longer fighting for attention - it is commanding it.

The impact was immediate. England Football reported a 196% increase in searches for female football playing opportunities the day after the final. The Lionesses had inspired thousands of young girls nationwide. Within five months, participation levels among girls in football had risen by 5% across the country.

Closer to home, AFC Bournemouth Women are also making history and helping to translate this national momentum into local impact.

The Cherries have enjoyed remarkable recent success, winning the National League South West last season and going unbeaten for over 1000 days between March 2023 and February 2026.

in 1992, the club have more recently seen successive promotions in the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons. They later joined the FA Women's National League Division One South West for the 2021/22 season.

Following AFC Bournemouth’s takeover

by American businessman Bill Foley in December 2022, the women’s team also received significant investment, reinforcing the club’s commitment to growing the women’s game.

In March 2025, the team lifted the FA Women’s National League Division One South West title in front of a record 7,076 fans, the largest attendance for a women’s game at the Vitality Stadium. For young girls in the stands, scarves wrapped around their shoulders, the impact was tangible. Football is a space where they belong.

This season, they continue their strong form as they battle for promotion in the Women’s Southern Premier Division. They currently lie two points behind first place with two games in hand. Bournemouth have only lost one of their league games this season and are on the brink of promotion in back to back seasons.

The power of visibility

Representation matters. When young players see women competing at a high level, they can envision themselves following a similar path. The success of Bournemouth Women, alongside the Lionesses’ achievements on the international stage, provides role models that young girls aspire to be like.

The FA reports that over the last four years, the number of women and girls playing football has increased by 56%.

Representation in media and accessibility through grassroots programs have contributed to this increase. Football now provides more than just athletic opportunity, it helps build confidence and a sense of community.

The rise of women’s football in Dorset isn’t just about results; it’s about culture. Many grassroots clubs are reporting an increase in girls joining. School playgrounds are changing, with more mixed and girls-only games. Parents who once only encouraged their sons to play now proudly watch daughters lace up their boots. Local Junior football leagues such as Littledown Juniors are increasingly seeing girls joining what was a predominantly boys affair, with no special treatment given to the girls as they battle shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts.

And it’s not only women’s participation in the beautiful game that is on the rise. Women’s matches are welcoming environments for families where young and old of both sexes go to watch a good game of football. Young fans get to see the dedication and teamwork of their local heroes up close and first-hand.

They experience the thrill of live football, the camaraderie of a club community, and the possibility that one day, they too could be on that very pitch.

Looking ahead

The rise of women’s football is more than a trend, it is a transformation. With growing investment, increased media coverage, and pathways from grassroots to professional levels, girls in Dorset no longer have to imagine where they could fit into the sport.

AFC Bournemouth Women demonstrate week in, week out that female footballers can succeed.

For years, girls often felt like guests in football with the game dominated by men.

Now, they are increasingly joining the men on centre stage, thanks to the efforts of the FA and clubs up and down the country, encouraged by the recent successes of the England Lionesses. Now every young player in Dorset, regardless of sex has the opportunity to pick up a ball, join a team, and take their shot.

The changing faces of

Poole

Poole Quay 1922

Poole’s rich heritage reaches thousands of years ago, with some of the earliest traces of life along its shores being the discovery of a log boat originating from 295 BC, which can be viewed in Poole Museum. Going from a Viking settlement to a portion of Canford Manor, the establishment of Poole is far later.

It was 1248, Knight William Longespee was about to journey on the Seventh Crusade, alongside King Louis IX, to reclaim Jerusalem. Before this, he granted his Borough of “La Pole” a measure of self-government under the Longespee Charter. He had sold his privileges to Poole in order to finance his expedition; this ended up being considered the ‘foundation’ of the Borough.

Without the charter, Poole wouldn’t have had the autonomy and freedom of decision-making so early which would undoubtedly have slowed the evolution of Poole.

Poole became a leading English port for trading during the medieval period. The town was given a charter that allowed them to have a weekly market and an annual fair – people from Hampshire and Dorset would go to buy and sell there. Because if it’s success and due to its increasing importance, Poole became a target for raids.

By the early 15th century, Poole had gained a reputation for being a nest of smugglers, and in 1405, the town was attacked. It was a combined Franco-Spanish force retaliating for the exploits of pirate Harry Paye of Poole (of Old Harry Rocks fame). He was feared by the Franco-Spanish due to his daring behaviour when looting ships, the proceeds of which were returned to Poole. The incensed Franco-Spanish alliance burnt local houses down, looted warehouses and killed Paye’s brother but the townspeople all came together to protect their town and drove the Franco-Spanish out. Despite the death of his brother, Paye didn’t stop looting and notably captured a ship with 12,000 gallons of wine shortly after, cementing himself as a local legend.

A century later, major repairs were underway for the rusted town gate and quay stairs in 1524. Wooden platforms were constructed for mounting guns on the quayside, ornamented with posts carved with royal Tudor griffins and lions.

A Tudor antiquarian named John Leland visited Poole in 1540 and wrote an account of his time there. He noted that: “There are men living who remember when all the buildings in the town had

thatched roofs. It now has many more substantial buildings and much more trade.”

With Poole’s expansion, came attention. The civil war between the king and parliament began in 1642 and Poole stood firmly in support of parliament.

It’s now 1643, and the royalists have one attempt at taking the town. Captain Francis Sydenham was their only hope and he subsequently agreed to leave the town gate open for them in exchange for money and a pardon. It was a trap. The gate was left open, and the chains were lowered as expected. However, when the royalist cavalry entered the space created by the half-moon fortification, the gate was shut and chains were raised, trapping them. Despite most of the Royalist cavalry managing to escape, the ambush is noted as a significant failed attempt to take the town.

Poole was standing tall, untouched by the royal cavalry, and Newfoundland trade was dominating the upcoming town in the 17th century, as some of the first settlers in Newfoundland came from Poole. The success of Newfoundland fisheries significantly influenced the development of Poole as we know it. By 1801 Poole was growing and had a population of 9276, which was considered large. In 1802, Newfoundland trade was at the peak of its prosperity, and the town’s population increased substantially in the next 10-20 years. Poole’s ships brought salt to Newfoundland and exported cod to Europe and would return with oil, wine and fruit. The success of the trade built the towns’ Georgian mansions and provided merchant wealth.

By 1815, the Napoleonic war with France had ended, and now fishermen from Poole were suddenly faced with competition from other nations. Some countries enforced import duties on dried fish to help their fishermen, which consequently resulted in the death of the Newfoundland trade in Poole. This transformation encouraged Poole to focus on more modern infrastructure, such as the Poole Harbour Commissioners, to manage the port’s evolution.

Old industries like shipbuilding, brickmaking and brewing declined in the 20th century. However, the town regained its prosperity, and a large reason for that was the construction of the new beachside resort in Bournemouth, creating a vast demand for goods in Poole.

This forced Poole to reinvent itself and lean into tourism to make money for the town. By 1901, Poole’s population had grown by ten thousand to 19,000 in large part due to tourism, which has also formed a significant part of the local economy since.

HI S TORI C However that reinvention soon turned into protection. In May 1940, during World War II, Poole played a massive role in Operation Dynamo. Dozens of fishing vessels and Royal Overseas Airways Corporation (RNLI) vessels setting off to France to rescue allied troops stranded at Dunkirk. The contribution was pivotal in aiding the rescue as an estimated 338,000 allied soldiers were saved, exceeding the initial expectation of 30,000 to 45,000 men.

Operation Dynamo wasn’t Poole’s only contribution to World War II. Poole was one of the main launching points for Operation Overlord. In 1944, over 300 vessels and thousands of troops departed Poole in support of the national and international efforts to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation.

Churchill transformed the south from a passive bastion of defence into a spring of offence. The Old town was filled with factories, petrol storage tanks and gasworks; protecting and

diverting attacks was a priority. Unfortunately, Poole had already experienced its first bombing as early as August 1940.

After the war, Poole gained momentum as an industrial centre and saw the establishment of major marine, banking, and engineering companies. There was also a concerted effort to replaced much of the dilapidated housing during the 60s & 70s. Large sections were demolished to make space for The Arndale Shopping Centre (now known as The Dolphin Centre). Although, due to the significant architectural loss, the town saw a conservation area made in 1975 to protect any of the remaining buildings in the town centre. The 70s and 80s in Poole saw more pedestrianisation in the Upper High Street. The landscaping and paving from the 80s remain central to the high streets character.

Since 2000, Poole has been attempting to reinvent itself again, with £10 million recently spent on a cruise berth at the Port of Poole to service medium-sized cruise ships as part of the growing UK cruise market. In 2019, Poole Borough merged with nearby Bournemouth and Christchurch creating one unitary authority – BCP in an effort to streamline services and deliver more value to local residents by sharing costs with the neighbouring towns.

In 2026, elections will be held to establish ‘Poole Town Council’ which many have argued will give the town some of its original identity back. But with the costs of this to be added to Local Council Tax bills, local residents and councillors remain split on whether this is a good idea or not. Time will tell, but one thing is for certain, Poole will forever be written into local, national and international history books.

Spring + Summer

Advice from Haskin's Alisdair Urquhart

The once nippy winds start to exude a gentle warmth, green shoots start to creep through the soil and the lavender evening sky sets just a little later. Plants that have been dormant for months begin to show hopeful signs of life again. Could it be that Spring is breaking through, finally signalling the end of the gloom and stirring nature from its slumber.

It might have been a while since you have even set foot in the garden but the warmer weather and clocks going forward make it difficult to resist the temptation of venturing into the garden and making an early start on your to-do list to getting your garden spruced up for the warmer evenings ahead.

Instead of diving in head-first and tackling everything at once. Alasdair Urquhart, from Haskins, suggests taking a much more thoughtful approach…

Start with the soil

Did you know that soil could be the make or break to a beautiful garden? The health of your soil is one of, if not the most important factor to a successful garden. The harsh frost and prolonged rain that comes along with winter means the soil will often need some TLC entering the warmer months.

What type of soil do you have?

For heavier soils, Alasdair Urquhart, suggests that “once conditions improve, lightly loosen the surface with a fork to help air and water move more freely.” Adding organics such as manure and garden compost can improve the structure and quality of your soil. Spreading compost evenly over beds as a mulch, will not only protect the soil, but microorganisms will draw nutrients down naturally.

Using organic matter for lighter, sandy soils can be beneficial. Urquhart says that lighter soils “warm quickly but lose moisture just as fast, which can leave plants stressed once temperatures rise.” Mulching in the spring creates consistent conditions for the plants.

Not only that, but did you know doing this now will reduce the stress of having to water as often later in the season?

Lawns: Setting the tone for summer

Even if the lawn looks rough around the hedges at the moment, making an early start can make all the difference.

A neatly manicured lawn is crucial and luckily, they respond instantaneously once the temperature rises. Raking the surface lightly to remove moss and winter debris, will allow air and light to reach the grass.

Expert Alasdair Urquhart’s advises: “Applying a gentle spring feed supports even growth across a lawn. Mow little and often at a slightly higher setting to strengthen grass and help lawns cope better with dry spells later in the year.”

The lawn might be looking a little worse for wear right now but that is okay, spring offers the best conditions for laying turf or repairing bare patches of grass as the naturally moist soil helps new grass grow evenly. Preparing the ground properly will allow it to grow before the summer heat (hopefully) arrives.

Borders + beds: Tidying with a purpose

Everyone loves a spring clean, don’t they? So why not include the garden – afterall, we’ll be hoping to spend plenty of time in it over the coming months.

Spring doesn’t just mean the weather is getting warmer, it’s the season of renewal and new beginnings, a perfect time for your garden to have a fresh restart.

What does spring cleaning mean for the garden?

Rather than spring cleaning we should think about it as more of a spring tidy. It is about uncovering displays, rather than clearing. Cut back dead stems from perennials once their fresh growth is visible (avoid removing everything too early). Urquhart adds that “maintaining a few old stems often protects new shoots from cold nights and late frosts.”

If you want a gorgeous garden, Herbaceous Perennials thrive in the Spring, they provide lasting colour and are low maintenance. They are known for their longevity and usually return more impressive each season.

We know you want your garden to look perfect right now, but it’s important to look ahead. When planting, think about the eventual height and spread of the flowers and plants, not just how they look now.

Alasdair suggests using a stake early, before the growth becomes soft, leaving the plant susceptible to drooping later on!

Whether you want an eye-catching vibrant garden or a more subtle elegant garden, establishing your dream garden is much harder to do without a colour scheme in mind. Yellows bring warmth and rich contrast so they work well alongside fresh foliage, carrying the beauty until summer planting takes over. Colour schemes can make your garden go from just looking good to looking perfect. Repeated colour schemes in small groups can also help create cohesion, making it feel intentional rather messy.

Growing your own: From planning to planting

Did you know tomatoes and peppers grow best when sown indoors, and as the kitchen garden blossoms in the spring, early summer is the perfect time to move them outside. Many crops benefit from being under cover, as it offers them warmth and protection while the unpredictable March and April outdoor weather settles into Spring. Once outside tomatoes and peppers will appreciate a sunny spot but with some shelter from wind.

Hardy vegetables are crops that can withstand the cold and frost. Deciding what to plant can be difficult as choices range from salad leaves to spinach and carrots. These crops are reliable early on and will reward your hard work quickly. Not only can they withstand frost, they can also be sown directly into the ground as soil temperatures begin to rise.

Potatoes are a staple of any garden and are a spring favourite.

Chitting (sprouting) seed potatoes encourages stronger growth as it allows shoots to form before planting. Urquhart offers an extra tip as far as potatoes are concerned: “When the plants emerge, pile the soil up around stems to protect them from frost which will increase yields.”

He also advises: “Seed potatoes should be chitted around four to six weeks before you plant them”.

Preparing for summer heat + dry spells

Before the blissful hot summer days, it is important that we make the most of the rainfall we get. Installing water butts allows rainwater to be collected and reused when plants need it most.

Mulching borders and containers are essential, not only does it help plants retain moisture, it keeps soil temperatures stable and reduces weed growth.

If you’re tight on time, drought tolerant plants cope better with dry periods and reduce the need for frequent watering, allowing you to enjoy the space rather than constantly focus on maintaining it.

Supporting wildlife

Whilst creating our dream gardens, let’s not forget the importance of supporting our local wildlife.

Spring is a critical time for wildlife. Nature begins to wake up, insects emerge as temperatures rise, birds begin nesting and amphibians move through gardens. It is important, if possible to leave some areas undisturbed to provide shelter for animals during the transition period.

Our feathered friends are very active in the spring. You can support birds during spring by providing clean water, food and nest boxes. Make sure to place the boxes away from direct sunlight and strong winds so they can enjoy them all season long.

And for our buzzy friends such as bees, ensure nectar and pollen are available from early spring. Alisdair suggests planting a range of flowers that bloom at different times from early Spring right through to Autumn but many of them will start to need planting now. Simple flower shapes, herbs and flowering shrubs are particularly valuable to our pollinators.

Urquhart’s recommendations for the pollinators: Early spring: Hellebores, primroses and virbunum tinus.

Late spring: Erysimum, Aubrieta, Euphorbia and fruit trees.

Fruit Trees + bushes

Spring is the sweetest time to introduce fruit tress and soft fruit to your garden.

When planted early the roots can grow before summer. Pruning raspberries and gooseberries now keeps the plants productive and manageable. Did you know feeding strawberries early in the season supports flowering and fruit development? The more flowers you can cultivate early on, the better the harvest is likely to be.

Ensure you use stakes to support fruit trees and bushes.

Even tomato bushes will appreciate a little help as they grow upwards towards the sun. It will also help to keep them from growing along the ground and potentially providing tasty treats for slugs, snails and garden critters.

A season of momentum

Many of us wish that our gardens could be pristine with minimal maintenance, but it is often described as a ‘chess game with nature.’ Spring gardening is about patience and building momentum rather than striving for perfection.

Focussing on soil health, thoughtful planting and steady maintenance, will help you create a sustainable framework that supports plants and wildlife.

The work done now allows you to enjoy summer with confidence, knowing the foundations are already in place.

MP IN THE SPOTLIGHT Interview with Neil Duncan Jordan MP - February 17th 2026

One of BH Living’s aims is to try to bring democracy closer to local people. We think that residents want to hear regularly from their local MPs, and they want to find out what the people they’ve elected are doing for their constituents – not just before another election, but throughout their time serving Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole as local MPs. In each edition, we’ll be talking to one of our local MPs so we can understand who they are, what they stand for and how they’ll be promoting the interests of BCP residents at Westminster.

In this edition it’s the turn of local Labour MP, Neil Duncan Jordan, who represents the Poole constituency.

BHL: What are the issues close to your heart that you’ll be tackling during this parliament?

NDJ: I have spoken in Parliament on a whole range of issues over the last 18 months, tabled hundreds of questions on everything you can imagine and proposed motions and amendments of various bits of legislation. But the single biggest issue that has been my focus is speaking for those who need a voice – whether they be pensioners, disabled people, SEND children or local businesses that are struggling.

BHL: Hello Neil, thanks for agreeing to the interview with BH Living.

Having only been elected as MP for Poole at the last general election, it’s possible that some of our readers won’t know you too well yet, so perhaps you could start by telling us a little about yourself: What’s your background before becoming an MP and how did you come to be MP of Poole?

NDJ: Before being elected I worked as a regional trade union official for the public sector union, UNISON and represented those working in the NHS, care homes, colleges, universities and councils. I originally trained as a journalist and did nearly twenty years as a national officer for an older people’s organisation. I have lived in Poole for over 25 years and been active in politics all my life. I always wanted to be an MP, but had never stood before. In 2024, everything aligned and I overturned a 19,000 vote majority and won by just 18 votes. It was a long night!

BHL: You have been a strong advocate of NHS Dentistry both locally as well as nationally, you recently took this up with Minister of State for Care (Stephen Kinnock MP) and your own Labour Government launched their Dentistry Rescue Plan, looking within your own constituency have you seen any evidence of this improving within the Poole area?

NDJ: The government has committed to delivering 700,000 extra urgent dental appointments, and to introduce more fundamental reform to the dental contract. It is clear that such reform is necessary to mend NHS dentistry, with dental practices having little incentive to take on NHS patients or, if they do treat NHS patients, to carry out more complex procedures.

BHL: You recently said that you supported the introduction of a Town Council for Poole in principle, but you also observed that with only 1% of the population taking part in the consultation, the result was “neither meaningful nor representative”. It now looks as though it will be going ahead, despite much local opposition - do you still support its introduction and if so, how do you feel it will benefit Poole?

NDJ: I believe the council should have delayed the introduction of the Town Council and run a proper and more widespread consultation with local residents. My philosophy has always been to bring power and decision making as close to the people as possible. That’s why in principle I think town and parish councils are a good idea. For Poole this is particularly important because many local residents feel the BCP experiment hasn’t been a success – and that Poole has missed out. I stand by my earlier comments that the council didn’t have a mandate to do anything – when so few people took part. In my view they should have run a proper referendum before making a decision. But they didn’t listen and we are now having town council elections from May. I hope that we elect some decent, hard working candidates who are interested in promoting Poole rather than themselves.

BHL: We hear much about investment in Northern powerhouses and deprived towns and cities in the north of England, but within BCP and indeed in your own constituency of Poole, there are a number of areas with significant levels of deprivation and low income, do you think last November’s budget will help many of the residents in these areas or do you think your government still has more work to do to help local people?

NDJ: I have been a strong advocate in Parliament for those who have suffered under 14 years of austerity. In fact, the cost of living crisis is now such a common phrase that we’ve begun to accept it as a way of life. The government’s announcement of Pride in Place money of £20m over ten years for parts

BHL: On 10 December 2025 you spoke in Parliament regarding ‘AI and online safety’ expressed opinions both of concern but also heralding the benefits if can bring. You stated that “The UK has an opportunity to lead on these issues” Our own area has many benefits with an Airport, Sea port and successful universities/colleges that are at the fore of new technology. Are you actively encouraging any of the big AI companies to look at Poole as a place to consider, bringing with it highly paid jobs and technology?

NDJ: AI is happening – but before we start expanding the government needs to ensure all the safeguards are in place.

They’re not at the moment and encouraging expansion before we know exactly what that looks like would be wrong. We don’t want big American tech firms to be running our society in a few years without us having any control of what is happening.

BHL: You sit on the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Prostate Cancer, something that may have touched the lives of many of our readers in some form or other. One of the groups aims is to push for early screening, which it’s claimed helps greatly with early diagnosis, treatment, care and survival. However, in November last year the UK National Screening Committee has said that they no longer recommend mass screening of men, given that screening can deliver false results. Do you still feel early screening is the right approach and will you still campaign to see early screening being adopted within this parliament?

NDJ: Early screening has been proven to be a real life saver. As a man over 50, I recently got tested and it’s important that men – who are often reluctant to go to their GP, should make sure they have a test. Anyone over 50 can request one and it’s free.

It’s important that we publicise this service.

BHL: You have given your support to the ‘Zero Hour campaign’ to introduce a Climate and Nature Bill which would force the government to take radical steps to address climate change. Within that bill, global warming is identified as a serious issue, which locally would have potential to devastate parts of Poole and the wider BCP area in the future. What, if anything, do you think should be done on a local level now in order to protect our own coastline and low lying areas for the future?

NDJ: Living in such a fantastic place, it’s important that we protect it for future generations. You only need to look at the weather we’ve been having lately to know that something is changing. Of course there are flood risk measures that can be put in place, but also we need to address the very causes of climate change like the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. We need to be transitioning to renewable sources of energy and bringing down people’s bills. Living by the sea we could do more to harness hydro-energy and this is something I’ve been discussing with key players since

becoming an MP. Energy produced by the movement of the water surrounding our town is something that we should be investigating further to see if it would benefit local people and businesses alike.

BHL: For a time last year, you lost the labour party whip (meaning you couldn’t sit as a labour MP in parliament and had to sit as an Independent MP) for voting against the final welfare bill, although you have since had the whip restored.

Do you feel what you did was right for your constituents or is this something you feel was mismanaged at the time?

NDJ: My suspension from the Parliamentary Labour Party for four months was not just for voting against the government on welfare – it was about persistently challenging them on a number of key issues. That I believe is the role of a decent backbencher – to put the interests of his or her constituents before climbing the greasy pole. I don’t regret my actions and I’ve continued to vote against the government since coming back in. Voters either want their MPs to be thinkers or they don’t. If you don’t want someone who is going to consider, analyse and amend legislation – then you might as well have a robot. They’re cheaper and more obedient! I don’t think that’s what the public want.

BHL: Most MPs we speak to say they are in politics to have a positive effect on the lives of the people they serve, but what do you hope your legacy will be for the people of Poole?

NDJ: To be honest, the biggest achievement has been to restore faith amongst local residents that they have an MP that is active, accessible and visible in the community. They haven’t seen that for a very long time. Every week my office is helping resolve people’s problems and I am working hard to improve the town. I’m currently running a Positive About Poole poll whereby constituents can vote to tell me what their priorities are for the town. This is about people power. Imagine what we can achieve when we work together.

BHL: Finally Neil, I’m sure you’re very busy in your work as a local MP and free time is probably a rare commodity, but when you do get some time to yourself, what do like doing?

NDJ: I have been a gigging musician for more than 40 years.

Writing and performing music is the way I make sense of the world and the things that are happening around me. It’s a great feeling to write a song, perform it in front of an audience and see their reaction. A bit like politics!
