First Food Bank for pets launched in Poole

Dorset Dogs CIC (Community Interest Company) have launched their first Food Bank for pets at Canford Heath Community Fridge

The Pet Food Bank initiative comes in response to the increased pressures on pet owners due to the cost-of-living crisis. According to the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH) survey of more than 60 animal shelters across England, 92% of shelters have seen an increase in people wanting to surrender a dog compared to pre-pandemic levels, and 88% saw an increase in people wanting to surrender cats.

The Pet Food Bank runs alongside the Community Fridge where people can top up their own food shop and save food from going to waste. (There is no means testing, and everyone is welcome).

Eventually, the CIC plan to have a network of Pet Food Banks across Dorset.

Each bank will be run on a trust basis –trusting that only those in real need will take what they need.

Dorset Dogs are also appealing to the Dorset community for pet food donations if they are in a position to help.
