God save the King!

Welcome to the spring edition of BH Living. After the sad passing of HM Queen Elizabeth last year, we now await a much happier event - the coronation of our new monarch King Charles III. BCP Council are keen to encourage as many people as possible to celebrate the occasion with street parties and have even waived the license fee for applying for street closures so that streets and whole neighbourhoods can party together. But if you’re planning on having a street party, you’ll need to get your applications in by the end of March - see page 8 for more details.

For many of us who had been facing a cold and expensive winter, springtime seemed a long way off but we are nearly there, with hopefully warmer days ahead (and lower energy bills).

The cost of living crisis doesn’t stop there unfortunately with many hardworking families still finding it difficult to make ends meet with higher prices for food and other essentials. The good news is that there is help available both from government and local organisations.

Our local food banks are working hard during unprecedented demand and can be accessed easily if you have been referred to them. You can be referred by all sorts of organisations and it’s really easy so if you are in need, please get help as soon as possible. See page 6 for more details. There is now even a pet food bank which has been set up in Poole - more about this on page 6.

The UK government are also offering help to some of the hardest hit by the current crisis in the form of credits which were applied automatically to most people’s fuel bills. Those on lower incomes were also entitled to additional payments into your bank account with more payments planned for the months ahead. If you’re unsure what you’re entitled to and how to apply, or even if you qualify, take a look at our news article on page 10 which will hopefully point you in the right direction.

With spring in the air and school holidays just around the corner, many parents are probably already asking that age-old question: ‘What am I going to do with the kids?’. Hopefully our what’s on guide to spring activities should help on page 22.

Enjoy the current edition and we’ll see you again for the summer edition coming out in June which will include a special feature on all of the exciting summer events and festivals planned for this year.

Beryl teams up with Enterprise Car Club in environmental drive

The Micromobility provider, Beryl, has teamed up with Enterprise Car Club in a new partnership designed to promote the benefits of shared ownership for both business and personal travel.

By offering discounted Enterprise Car Club membership rates and free driving credit to Beryl users, the scheme aims to encourage people to move from private to shared ownership transport solutions and contribute towards reducing congestion and carbon emissions.

The partnership is part of Enterprise’s ongoing commitment to delivering more convenient and connected travel by integrating different types of shared transport including Beryl bikes and scooters. Enterprise Car Club members can already enjoy a free 200 Minute Beryl Bundle when they sign up to Beryl. The new scheme creates a reciprocal arrangement encouraging Beryl users to explore the benefits of Enterprise Car Club.

80 year old Care home Team Leader celebrates 48 years of service

Ita Graven from Elizabeth House care home in Parkstone enjoyed a double celebration recently when she not only turned 80 but was surprised with a special afternoon tea to commemorate her amazing 48 years of continuous service. Care South’s Chief Executive, Simon Bird joined the team to celebrate the occasion and personally thank Ita for her dedication to Care South. “We are lucky to have lots of long-term team members who have stayed with us well in excess of 25 years, but Ita’s 48 years is really quite incredible and there certainly seems to be no stopping her with her energy and enthusiasm”.

Ita is currently even caring for residents younger than herself and quipped “The 48 years have gone by in a flash! I love the work; every day is unique, and I’ve made a good living out of doing something I enjoy.”

The partnership will promote Beryl’s suitability for first and last mile journeys, making it quick and simple to link with an Enterprise Car Club car, which can then be used for longer journeys or those that simply need four wheels rather than two.

Beryl Partnerships Lead, Ben Lee, said:

“Ultimately, we want to inspire more people to take up sustainable travel options and help make our towns and cities cleaner and greener spaces in which to live, work and visit. By partnering with Enterprise Car Club, we have a great opportunity to show people how flexible and convenient shared schemes can be in helping them get from A to B.”

To claim this offer visit the https://www.enterprisecarclub.co.uk/ gb/en/programs/promotion/member-benefits, choose your location, and enter your promotional code. The offer expires on the 31st January 2024.

Giving you sustainable travel choices

The NHS recommends at least 150 minutes’ moderate activity per week which a 15-minute daily commute easily covers. Outdoor physical activity is also great for your mental health by helping you manage your stress levels. It can help you sleep better at night too.

Instead of automatically grabbing the car keys, why not walk, cycle, wheel, run or scoot to work, school, your friend’s home or the shops. Being physically active is easier if it replaces something you already do. Short journeys to work or school are ideal for this and, let’s face it, by the time you’ve factored in traffic jams, road works and finding a parking space, cycling, scooting or walking is often faster and less costly than driving!

‘The Active You’ is about YOU and your environment. It’s about helping you to build regular exercise into your day, good for both your physical and mental health. It’s also about cutting down car journeys and reducing congestion and air pollution.

Check out transformingtravel.info for more information and tips to help ‘The Active You’ walk, cycle or scoot for your local journeys.

Our ‘Active You’ programme aims to change the way we travel. We want to encourage you to take up an active form of travel and we’re busy building a network of new cycle and walking paths to help you do this. We’re also providing programmes like our longerterm cycling and walking plan, our ‘School Streets’ initiative and our cycle training schemes.

Whether it’s walking, wheeling, cycling, running or scooting, BCP Council is committed to helping you chose to travel using just your own muscle power!

Bournemouth Foodbank issues urgent appeal amidst cost of living crisis

The rising cost of basic foods such as pasta, tea, bread and other everyday foods is hitting the most vulnerable the heaviest with 61% of those in the most deprived areas buying less food than last year according to the ONS (Office for National Statistics).

It’s thought that public health could be affected as a result of the rising prices, with nearly one-quarter (23%) of the ONS’s survey participants saying they had skipped or reduced the size of a meal because they could not afford to buy food, according to data from the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

As a result Bournemouth Foodbank has seen unprecedented demand for it’s services. In September 2022 alone they helped 997, of which 279 were children and the situation

has become more acute with even more local families turning to the foodbank for support, leading to the local charity issuing an urgent appeal for more funds and contributions. Proceeds from the appeal will enable the charity to reach more people with the emergency food and the support they need to move out of crisis and receive specialist advice to address long term problems that they may be facing. And for a limited time, donors who give £30 or more will receive a free gift of a an ‘Ending Hunger’ Tote bag. Donate £50 or more and also get a branded travel mug.

Introducing Dorset Police Interceptors

Dorset Police has recently launched a new Interceptor Team. The new team of uniformed officers will tackle criminals using Dorset’s road network who are involved in crimes, such as county lines drug dealing, human trafficking, modern slavery, burglary and vehicle crime.

The officers will use a mixture of Interceptor Team marked and unmarked highperformance vehicles to target offenders with the latest high-tech equipment, enabling officers to check various policing systems for intelligence from within the vehicle.

Currently those who find themselves in need can be referred to the foodbank via a ‘Voucher referral scheme’ working alongside local agencies such as Citizen’s Advice, Children’s Services and health visitors.

First Food Bank for pets launched in Poole

Dorset Dogs CIC (Community Interest Company) have launched their first Food Bank for pets at Canford Heath Community Fridge

The Pet Food Bank initiative comes in response to the increased pressures on pet owners due to the cost-of-living crisis. According to the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH) survey of more than 60 animal shelters across England, 92% of shelters have seen an increase in people wanting to surrender a dog compared to pre-pandemic levels, and 88% saw an increase in people wanting to surrender cats.

The Pet Food Bank runs alongside the Community Fridge where people can top up their own food shop and save food from going to waste. (There is no means testing, and everyone is welcome).

Eventually, the CIC plan to have a network of Pet Food Banks across Dorset.

Each bank will be run on a trust basis –trusting that only those in real need will take what they need.

Dorset Dogs are also appealing to the Dorset community for pet food donations if they are in a position to help.

Celebrate the King’s Coronation with a street party

Residents and local communities are being invited to apply for a free street party licence to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty The Queen Consort.

The UK will celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III with a threeday bank holiday weekend from Saturday 6 May to Monday 8 May 2023.

The Coronation will take place on the morning of Saturday 6 May at Westminster Abbey, and on Sunday 7 May Coronation Big Lunches will bring communities together with a special Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle.

On the 8 May, The Big Help Out, will provide an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of His Majesty’s service and showcase the impact of volunteering within communities.

To help residents commemorate the Coronation, BCP Council is waiving the usual administration fee for street party road closures. The street parties are usually organised by groups of residents who get together to celebrate with their neighbours, friends and families.

For anyone wishing to hold a street party over the extended bank holiday weekend, the Council are asking that applications are submitted by Friday 24 March 2023.

A council spokesperson said, “The King’s Coronation marks a special time in our history, and it is an opportunity for us to come together again to celebrate.

“We want to make it easy for local residents and communities to organise street parties. To celebrate this special occasion, we have waived the fee to close residential roads and made the process easy to encourage as many residents as possible to join in”.

The Big Screens will be in position over the weekend in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole broadcasting the national events and further local events will be announced as the big day draws closer.

Active Travel projects in BCP Council area given £287k boost by Active Travel England

Projects to encourage active travel across the BCP Council region have been given a £287,000 boost with a new support grant awarded by Active Travel England (part of the Department for Transport – DfT) from the Government’s Capability an Ambition Fund.

The award will be used to fund a number of initiatives across the conurbation, which will help encourage local people to change their travel behaviour and consider adopting active travel. One such project is the design and planning of more secure cycle parking facilities across the BCP Council area. Fear of bike theft is one of the main reasons preventing people from cycling and providing more secure bike storage could help encourage more people to cycle for everyday journeys.

Funds from the grant will also be used to continue the popular and successful ‘Active Travel in Schools’ work, which includes ‘School Streets’ and the ‘Bike It Plus’ projects. Both are aimed at improving the safety of school children whilst encouraging them and their families to take up cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting to school.

Full steam ahead for Poole Park Railway

The popular Poole Park Railway reopened in October 2022, much to the delight of locals. Featuring a new track, spacious engine shed and 32-capacity, wheelchair-accessible carriages, the reopening was a long anticipated ocassion for many residents keen to see the railway running again for the first time following its closure in 2018. Karen Rampling, a local mum of three boys said “I remember my parents bringing me to the railway when I was just six years old and it’s become an important part of the park. I was sad to see it close but thrilled to now see it reopen again. It was just as good as I remember it being and the boys loved it!”

Eyes to the skies

The skies above our region are famed for spectacular flying displays of aircraft wowing the crowds at Bournemouth Air Festival. Last summer an equally thrilling site lifted off – the first osprey chicks to hatch in southern England for 200 years.

A conservation project is restoring these striking fish-eating birds to their former haunts in Poole Harbour - one of the most environmentally rich areas in the country. This summer, why not visit the new look out point at Ham Common for some osprey spotting, you might also be lucky enough to see other harbour stars from giant white-tailed eagles to elegant spoonbills.

Better buses for BCP residents

The Department for Transport (DfT) is helping local councils with a Bus Service Improvement Plan with the intention of making buses more frequent, more reliable and better value for money. BCP Council is part of the scheme which gives them access to government funding and support for local services. The council’s aim is that by working with bus operators and getting noticeable benefits it will increase the number of people travelling by bus.

19,000 single-use plastic bottles were saved from ending up in the bin during July last year thanks to BCP Council’s “Turning the Tide” project with City to Sea. 150 free water refill stations can now be found along the seafront to help reduce the use of plastic bottles on the seafront with the scheme continuing through 2023.

Plans on track to build more local homes for local people says council

BCP Council’s aim to deliver 15,000 new homes across our three towns for people of all incomes is on track claims the council with over 1,400 built or in planning stages. Parkstone lifesavers

A life-saving defibrillator was installed on the public toilets in Ashely Cross, Parkstone last summer, due to the fundraising efforts of local resident Coreen Barnett with support from local Parkstone Ward Councillor Ann Stribley.

A further four defibrillators are now being installed around Parkstone, thanks to Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding secured by fellow Parkstone Ward Councillor Steve Baron.

Thanks to further support from government to the tune of £883,000, BCP Council are setting up ‘one-stop’ family hubs to support families. Children’s centres will be transformed into family hubs offering support to children from pre-birth up to 25-years-old and local families. The family hub transformation funding will help to achieve the council’s vision for connected communities and brighter futures for children, young people and their families.

Smallest library

A community room at the region’s smallest library is bringing people together. Ensbury Park opened a small garden room last September, after funding from Enpals charity, BCP Council and the Talbot Village Trust. It is now used as a warm space on Thursday afternoons and is open to book clubs and Lego clubs.

These defibrillators, which will be installed at Parkstone Library, The Bermuda Triangle Public House, Willow Park and Seaview Kiosk, could help save a person’s life when they’re suffering a cardiac arrest, with time being of the essence.

Fall in criminal and anti-social behaviour in BCP

Anti-social behaviour (ASB) and crime is reducing across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, thanks to extra funding from BCP Council and collaborative intelligence-led working with agencies. There was a 25.59 per cent reduction of reported crime rates in Bournemouth town centre, during the peak summer season of April to August 2022 compared to the same time in 2021, according to last October’s Seasonal Response Review.

ASB also dropped by 11.3 per cent during April to December 2022 across the three towns, compared to the previous year.

The reduction was partly thanks to a total of £2 million investments from BCP Council over 2022/23. The funding has brought in increased street lighting and CCTV across the three towns, particularly in bus stops and subways and new 24/7 CCTV coverage in Christchurch. It has also led to a greater security presence from Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS) officers, with a focus on ASB hotspots.

Behind-the-scenes follow up work by council youth, family and homeless services have also helped to reduce repeat offending.

Do you have a concern about ASB?

Always call 999 if someone’s life or property is at risk. For non-emergencies, you can call the police on 101, email 101@dorset.pnn. police.uk or visit www.dorset.police.uk.

If you’re experiencing any ongoing issues with antisocial behaviour or have any concerns, you can contact the council’s ASB team for advice and guidance. Contact asbteam@bcpcouncil.gov.uk or 01202 128883.

Meet the ASB team

The council has a dedicated ASB team who work in partnership with other agencies to prevent, tackle and investigate anti-social behaviour to improve the quality of life for communities, businesses and visitors. The teams collect evidence and use enforcement tools when informal interventions don’t work. In 2022 the team helped bring about ten Premises Closure Orders for properties associated with serious ASB and disorder. The court orders resulted in restricted access to properties to help protect the safety of the community.

A key area of work is preventing young people from becoming involved in ASB. The ASB team undertake youth engagement work which can include working with families and alongside uniformed security to patrol parks and other summer nuisance hotspots. In 2022 early intervention into youth related ASB cases led to 94% of these young people not engaging in further anti-social behaviour.

National funding to bring local travel benefits

BCP Council have ambitious plans to improve the local travel infrastructure with its largest ever investment in sustainable travel, thanks to government funding. The idea is to make it easier for residents to make green, healthy and sustainable travel choices.

BCP and Dorset Councils were jointly awarded the multi-million-pound grant from the Department for Transport which is now being used to invest in a network

of new cycle and walking routes and bus improvements across the region.

Sustainable travel improvements have already been completed or are under construction at ten locations.

The council are also helping schools and businesses to install vital facilities like bike storage and showers and improving safety with new crossings on busy roads near to schools, business parks and public facilities.

Part of the funding will go towards supporting the Beryl bike, e-bike and e-scooter hire scheme, which since its launch has seen 1.3 million journeys covering over 4.8 million kilometres across our area. Of these journeys, 33% have replaced a car, van or taxi journey, cutting down on emissions and congestion.

Save Food Waste Save Money

Food - most of us love it and yet so many of us waste a lot of it too. In fact latest figures suggest that on average each UK household wastes about £60 of food per month which is over £700 per year!

And the problem isn’t just a UK-wide one. Globally it’s estimated that between 25% and 30% of food produced is lost or wasted. Some of this is unavoidable but much of it is, if we change our habits and adjust our lifestyles a little.

Food waste hurts the environment

It’s hard to believe but if food waste was actually a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gasses in the world! Not only are there so many resources used for growing it, rearing it or producing it, there are lots more resources used in processing it, packaging it, transporting it and storing it and when it doesn’t make into hungry tummies, all of that resource used to get it to your home is wasted.

Small steps can make a big impact

Nobody wastes food on purpose, but there are some easy things we can do to use up as much as possible of the food we buy. Better valuing and using up your food will save you money on your food shop too! Climate change can feel like a huge and abstract problem, but food is something we have control over multiple times a day, and can make a difference with every meal.

5 steps to start saving and stop wasting

1. Keep a track

You might not even notice where more food could be saved till you actively look. Spend a week or so trying to notice what ingredients are most commonly thrown away, is it often leftovers, or things you never got round to using at all? If you know what’s being thrown away and how, it’s easier to change!

4. Store it

Storing our food correctly can help it last longer, and give us a better chance of using it up. Check out www.hubbub. org.uk/store-it-like-a-pro for top tips on storing fruit and veg, to keep it happy and fresh for as long as possible.

Fact: Did you know that storing tomatoes upside down helps them last longer?

2. Check it

Always check your fridge and cupboards for what you’ve already got before you go food shopping. You might have forgotten tasty treats you already have, or you might spot ingredients that need to be finished, so you can plan your shop better to combine with those. Check ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ labels too, so you know what needs to be used up first.

5. Freeze it

Getting friendly with your freezer could save you a wad of cash, and save a lot of food from the bin! Did you know you can freeze almost anything safely, and without reducing the quality or nutritional value?

<wacky fact> Did you know you can freeze eggs? You need to break them out of their shells first. Crack them in a Tupperware container and beat the yolk and white together lightly then pop the top on the container. Label it with the date you froze it and the number of eggs used and next time you need an omelette, defrost the eggs and bingo!

You can find out what else you can surprisingly freeze such as cheese and even rice by visiting www.hubbub.org. uk/15-freezer-friendly-foods

3. Plan it

Meal planning is a great way to help reduce food waste, as you’ll only buy the things you need and know what days you’re eating them. Remember to save some empty days in your plan for eating out, or sorting out leftovers and random ingredients. Not done much planning before? Check out www.hubbub.org.uk/10-easy-meal-preptips for helpful tips.

6. Share it

Going on holiday? Cooked too much? Sometimes we will have done all the meal prep and planning yet still have spare food that’s perfectly good. This food can be shared with your local Community Fridge to share food with your neighbours - it could be odd ingredients or full blown meals! The community fridge is a great idea to help people share food they don’t want. There are a few dotted around BCP.

Check out www.hubbub.org.uk/thecommunity-fridge to find out more info on locations and the idea behind it.

DORSET in Pictures

Our county boasts a wide variety of spectacular landscapes, from the cliffs and beaches on Dorset’s historic coastline, its chalk downs and limestone hills, heathland and vales, to its picture postcard towns and villages and other ancient settlements.

In “Dorset in Pictures”, photographer Matthew Pinner takes a fresh look at Dorset, capturing the huge variety of scenery, natural and man-made, that makes Dorset special. For those of us who live in the county and for its many thousands of visitors, this book captures some of the most iconic scenes perfectly. Here’s a selection of photographs from our own area of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole but also a few further afield.

Published by Amberley Publishing in 2022, “Dorset in Pictures” features some of Matthew Pinner’s finest work and you could be the lucky owner of this 129 page masterpiece.

Benedict XVI Last Testament

On New Year’s Eve 2022 the news came that former Pope Benedict XIV had died peacefully in the Monastero Mater Ecclesiae in Vatican City. Many people, including world figures in politics and the church paid homage to a man many called one of the greatest theologians of the 20th Century. It was enough to make me want to learn more about the man, his life and how he became the first Pope to resign his post in over 700 years. It offers us all a unique insight into his life both before, during, and after his occasionally turbulent years in office.

The book itself is a very easy read, written in an interview format you admire how the author has, at times, put to The Pope Emeritus some very challenging questions. You can see that here we have two friends who clearly know each other and are comfortable in each other’s company discussing his life from childhood through to the time when his health started to

Grandpa’s Great Escape

deteriorate, to just before his death as he dedicated the remaining years of his life to prayer and reflection.

Although not officially an autobiography, the book does indeed cover his whole life from childhood growing up with his loving family, living through Nazism to how he became a professor of theology and eventually becoming Archbishop of Munich. The book then covers how he became Pope, his achievements and then some of the obstacles he had to overcome during his tenure in the chair of Saint Peter. He was known by many priests and cardinals as “Gods Rottweiler” and this is also covered in the book as are many lighter moments of humour he shares with us.

The book is not over religious which itself makes it accessible for many whether Christian or not. As well as covering the life of the former pope, It also offers a unique insight into one of the most powerful offices in the world.

Publisher: Harper Collins Children’s Books

My nine year old son was excited to begin his next novel by David Walliams, having read many of the best-selling author’s previous titles such as ‘Gangsta Granny’ and ‘The midnight gang’.

Walliams has a great knack of encouraging inquisitive young minds to see the world immediately around them through different eyes and this title is no different.

In Grandpa’s Great Escape, we are introduced to Jack, a twelve year old boy who has a very special relationship with his elderly Grandfather, who throughout the book is referred to as ‘Wing Commander Bunting’. This lovable old war hero seems to be stuck in the past and it quickly becomes apparent that he’s living with what adults would refer to as the effects of dementia. But to Jack, his Grandpa has a wild imagination and time with him is one big adventure. Rather than portraying dementia with a negative vibe, Walliams succeeds in taking the young reader on a wildly exciting journey through life, but uniquely seeing it through the eyes of a dementia sufferer.

Whereas almost everybody else in the story has written Grandpa off, Jack forms an impenetrable bond with him and embraces his Grandads forgetfulness and sense of fun as he embarks on the adventure of a lifetime.

ISBN: 9780008183424 Number of pages: 464

Jack, egged on by Grandpa, assumes the character of ‘Squadron Leader Jack Bunting’ who becomes Grandpa’s, or should I say Wing Commander Bunting’s second in command. Together they seek to uncover a wicked plot within a local old folks home which leads to a daring escape plan. There’s a colourful array of characters along the way including a very proper and slightly snobby old lady who secretly holds a torch for Grandpa and also a Rear Admiral who shares Grandpa’s desire to ‘beat the Jerrys’ although in this case, the Jerrys are the rather unsavoury characters running the old folks home.

Like many, I’ve watched loved ones struggle with dementia but this story is a heartwarming one that leaves the negativity of dementia behind. Without realising it, my son was learning about mental illness in a very deep and meaningful way. He understood, and didn’t really question, that some people find it harder to live in the present than the past and that rather than challenging those people to live in the here and now, it’s sometimes better (and more fun) to let them live in the past.

The ending was somewhat unexpected and definitely a tear-jerker so have those tissues ready for the last two chapters and the epilogue.

At peace, not forgotten

The cemeteries around BCP are home to some interesting residents…

Across our three towns we have many notable people buried in the cemeteries. Many are household names made famous in their own right, such as Mary Shelley and Lewis Tregonwell, others are less well known but their historical importance in our area is just as important and is one worth sharing. It only takes a walk around some of the local cemeteries to learn more about these people and here we look at three of them.

Alfred Russel Wallace January 1823 –November 1913

Co-discoverer of the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection

Buried in Broadstone Cemetery, Poole, Dorset

In our modern world of social media and 24hour rolling news coverage, we often forget it was not that long ago that it was more of a case of whoever got their book or paper published first, were the ones who gained the fame and recognition. This is one such case.

Situated in plain sight 30 metres on the right as you enter Broadstone Cemetery, Poole, you see a strange monolith placed over a grave. The pillar is in fact a fossilised tree trunk, thought to be Conifer and its origin is believed to be from the Portland area of Dorset. This marks the final resting place of Alfred Russel Wallace, naturalist, explorer,

Frederick George Abberline 8 January 1843 – 10 December 1929

Famous as the lead detective in the 1888 Jack the Ripper murder investigations

Buried in Wimborne Road Cemetery Bournemouth

One for the criminologists among us, the Whitechapel Murders, or more commonly known as the ‘Ripper Murders’ took place in the late 1880’s where five grizzly murders were attributed to the infamous (and never identified) serial killer. Upon retirement, the lead detective in the case moved to Bournemouth and is buried in the town which qualifies him for his place in this article.

Christopher Crabb Creeke – March 1820 – May 1886

Famous for the early development of Bournemouth

Buried in Wimborne Road Cemetery, Bournemouth

Although Lewis Tregonwell is long regarded as the founder of Bournemouth, it was Christopher Creeke who was the main architect of the town who brought together the landowners and then gained their cooperation in the task of planning

geographer, anthropologist, biologist and illustrator who, independently of Charles Darwin, was the co-discoverer of the theory of evolution by natural selection.

Both Wallace and Darwin knew each other and although both did their research independently of each other, they are both credited with the discovery of natural selection. Together they presented a scientific paper to the Linnean Society, London in July 1858 which was then published in August 1858. It was Darwin however who got his book published first and then in all probability enjoyed a greater share of the credit.

Upon Wallace’s death in 1913 it was suggested he was buried in Westminster Abbey alongside Darwin, however it was said his own wishes, along with that of his family, was he wanted to be buried in Broadstone Cemetery, Poole.

Frederick Abberline was born in Blandford Forum, Dorset and trained as a clockmaker. He moved to London in 1863 where he joined the Metropolitan Police (N - Division) rising rapidly through the ranks. He was promoted to Inspector First class in 1888 and then Chief inspector in December 1890.

Such was the respect Abberline gained from his colleagues, along with his esteemed knowledge of the local area, that he was place in the position of Lead Detective investigating the Ripper murders heading up the investigating team.

Although the case had many leads and suspects no one was ever charged. Abberline retired from the police in 1892 in the rank of Chief Inspector and retired to Bournemouth where he lived until his death in 1929, he is buried in Wimborne Road Cemetery, Bournemouth.

drains, water supply and roads which is needed for the development of any town. Born in Cambridge, Creeke moved to Bournemouth in the mid 1850’s on a commission from Mary Shelley to convert a large property into her beach retreat. Upon her death, Creeke remained in Bournemouth.

At the time, Bournemouth did exist but in a very disorganised haphazard way. In 1856 parliament allowed the establishment of Bournemouth Commissionaires, of which Christopher Creeke was appointed surveyor. His remaining years were spent advising the commissionaires and land owners in designing the town in a way that is still very evident today.

Christopher Creeke died in 1886 and is buried in Wimborne Road Cemetery which he himself had designed.
