The Council’s Community Finance Initiative will make mortgages more accessible to residents and key workers in Bournemouth and support the housing market in the town (see page 4). Council investment in the popular Littledown Centre has begun so that it can offer greater health and fitness facilities for local people (see page 4). And exciting improvements are taking place at Pier Approach as part of the Seafront Strategy to offer world-class facilities to help secure Bournemouth’s vital tourism economy (see page 8).

Borough. Many improvements to the Boscombe Precinct will begin this autumn to make the area more attractive (see page 15). This is alongside a number of transport projects to improve cycling, walking and public transport facilities.

The Council will also continue to invest in areas that are important to residents such as repairing potholes and smartening up our streets and neighbourhoods. Investment is always carefully considered and, as in the case of the street lighting upgrade to energy efficiency technology, can often also bring long term savings (see page 12).

All of this work and more is helping to build a better Bournemouth today and planning the future of the town for the years ahead.

Littledown Centre set for improved facilities

A Could you be eligible for a new Council mortgage?

I

f you have never had a mortgage or not held one within the last 36 months then you may be eligible for one of the new mortgages being offered by the Council as part of the Community Finance Initiative.

These residential mortgages are aimed at first-time buyers with a minimum five percent deposit, who have: • lived in the Borough for at least 12 months • are intending to buy in Bournemouth • can demonstrate they are able to repay the loan.

Mortgages will also be available for key workers in Bournemouth. Loan periods will range from 10 to 30 years. As a guide, applicants will be able to borrow a maximum of four and a half times their gross annual income in most cases, subject to their affordability.

Mr and Mrs Wyatt are looking to buy a property in the Borough of Bournemouth having rented in the area for over 12 months. Mr Wyatt had previously owned a property five years ago but had to sell as the result of a relationship breakdown. The couple are both employed and have a joint annual income of £46,000. Having saved a five percent deposit and with a good credit record, we would be able to offer them a mortgage to purchase a family home.

£1.2 million investment into the Littledown Centre has been agreed by councillors.

The money will be used to create a larger gym, two additional fitness studios and increase car parking.

The Centre, which is operated by the leisure and cultural trust ‘BH Live’, will also benefit from an investment in the latest gym equipment by the Trust.

Councillor John Beesley, Leader of the Council said: “The Council is delighted to be able to improve this extremely popular leisure facility offering greater health and fitness facilities for our residents.

Working in partnership with BH Live, who operate the centre on our behalf, will significantly enhance our local leisure facilities.

With the increase in footfall, the ongoing investment ensures it remains fit for purpose and one of the top performing leisure centres in the UK.” Work will begin this autumn and will be carried out over phases to minimise any disruption. The Centre also plans to continue offering activities as normal during works.

Plans submitted for new Boscombe services hub

T

he Boscombe Regeneration team, the Dorset Police Safer Neighbourhood officers and a brand new drop in centre for young people will soon be available under one roof if plans are approved.

A planning application has been submitted to transform the ground floor of the former Argos building in Boscombe, situated opposite the Crescent, into dedicated offices for the three services. The plans aim to bring the large empty shop unit back into use and enhance the western end of the high street.

Councillor Jane Kelly, Cabinet Member for Partnerships and Regeneration, said: “The former Argos site is in a prime location in Boscombe and it will provide a great central location for these key services who are all working towards improving Boscombe. The site has remained empty for some time now and so it will have a really positive impact to see this space being used.”

Record number of Bournemouth Green Flag sites

W

e’ve won a record number of prestigious Green Flag awards this year for Bournemouth’s wonderful parks and gardens. This keeps the town in the UK’s top ten with the most in the South West once again.

Awarded by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, Green Flags recognise and reward the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign that the space meets high environmental standards, is safe and well maintained and has a well balanced mix of facilities for the community.

Queen’s Park has become the latest addition to our Green Flag honours. Facilities at the Park have improved significantly over the past year with the opening of a children’s adventure playground and public café, restaurant and bar.

Dealing with nuisance noise

D

id you know we receive around 1,600 noise complaints each year and a further 500 complaints about the accumulation of rubbish and untidy sites?

We work closely with the police and local businesses, including pubs and clubs, to resolve complaints about noise, anti-social behaviour and other problems generated by licensed activities such as drinking and playing music.

Problems can often be resolved simply by talking to the business or person responsible and asking for their cooperation. However, persistent disturbances which cause a real nuisance can be reported to our Community Enforcement Team.

Councillor David Smith, Cabinet Member for Planning and Environment, said: “Noise and other problems can really affect the quality of residents’ lives. Persistent noise should be reported and residents can assist the Council by keeping a written record of the dates and times the noise takes place.”

We meet on the last Friday of each month in the Music Zone of Bournemouth Library.

Storm repairs at Hengistbury Head

Bournemouth has been granted over £1.2 million by the government to repair storm damage caused last winter to the coastline at Hengistbury Head.

Cut energy bills, insulation grants available now

The headland at Hengistbury bore the brunt of the bad winter weather and subsequently suffered considerable damage. Three rock groynes at Hengistbury Head will be repaired and rebuilt and the rock-filled bank at Double Dykes will be refilled and reinforced. The rock structure to the Long Groyne at Hengistbury Head which was badly affected by waves will also benefit from repairs.

Councillor David Smith, Cabinet Member for Planning and Environment, said: “Securing this investment is great news for Bournemouth following the severe weather we experienced last winter. These coastal protection works will be vital in helping us recover from the damage caused by the storms, prevent coastal erosion and to ensure that we reinforce our sea defences in time for next winter. I am delighted that we are going to be able to deliver these repairs fully funded by government with no cost to the council taxpayer.”

The Council made a successful claim for Flood Defence Grant in Aid funding from the Environment Agency for the work and has also been awarded £1.44 million for urgent beach replenishment works programmed for 2015/16.

The coastal defence repairs at Hengistbury Head will begin in September and last for approximately eight weeks.

School applications open

More secondary school places needed

A

round 1,800 additional Bournemouth secondary school places will need to be found from September 2018 onwards as a continued rise in pupil numbers is forecast.

Work is now underway to investigate appropriate government funding that will enable Bournemouth’s schools to expand to cater for extra pupils.

This follows the highly successful planning and delivery of additional primary school places over the last four years, with 60 percent of Bournemouth primary schools temporarily or permanently expanding to meet demand.

Councillor Nicola Greene, Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, said: “Forecasts show that over time the increase in pupil numbers that we have seen at primary age will transfer to secondary. We are already working hard to put in place suitable measures to ensure that there are enough secondary school places in Bournemouth in the future.”

Could you care for others in your own home?

H

ave you heard of the Bournemouth Shared Lives Scheme? The Scheme offers vulnerable people accommodation based within an approved carers home, this could include adults with a learning disability, mental health, dementia or a physical disability.

The Scheme is an alternative to home care or a care home. People living in Shared Lives households say they feel less isolated and make real friendships. The care provided is seen as a highly flexible and rewarding form of care and accommodation.

Carers and the person in need of support are matched for compatibility. In many cases the individual becomes a settled part of the family, based within the carer’s home either on a long term or respite basis.

Shared Lives carers are recruited, assessed, trained and supported by our Bournemouth Shared Lives Scheme. Carers can come from all walks of life. You don’t need lots of qualifications but you will need a genuine interest in caring for and supporting people within your own home.

Phase one of the Seafront Strategy has been given the go ahead after planning consent was granted for improvements to Pier Approach. Work starts this September and will continue until March, when residents and visitors will be able to enjoy an enhanced experience at this fabulous space.

Key features

• There will be better landscaping, lighting and a water feature running through the site to connect the award-winning Lower Gardens with the sea for the first time in 100 years.

• A new visitor information kiosk will replace the existing seafront office so that information is available in a prominent place.

Why are changes being made?

Councillor Lawrence Williams, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Leisure and Culture, explains: “Pier Approach is an important and historical area along our seafront and the central point of our seven miles of golden beaches. The improvements will bring the site into the 21st century and meet the high expectations of the great British seaside by new generations. It will showcase a range of attractive features that will create a more vibrant environment for visitors and residents.”

It is anticipated that the transformation of Pier Approach will help to attract further private sector funding and investment into Bournemouth’s tourism economy.

What is the Seafront Strategy?

Pier Approach this summer 2014

The Seafront Strategy is our ambitious long term plan to develop a world-class seafront for Bournemouth that will enhance the natural assets of the coastline and create public spaces and facilities to inspire new generations of visitors.

Over 90 potential projects have been identified for the 20year programme. The projects are grouped into activities to best fit with the different locations along the coastal area: The Chines (Alum, Middle and Durley), Central Beach comprising of Pier Approach, the Coastal Activity Park (Toft Steps to Boscombe Overstrand) and the Coastal Nature Park which is the area from Boscombe to Southbourne.

Will there be any disruption?

There may be some disruption to the Pier Approach area at different stages of the project but the impact of these works will be kept to a minimum. Autumn events that use the site as part of their activities, including Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival and Bournemouth Marathon Festival, will not be affected by the start of the work.

Wind farm

a negative impact on the town

Navitus Bay Wind Farm would be bad for Bournemouth The proposed Navitus Bay off shore wind farm will have a negative impact on both the economy and environment of Bournemouth. This is the conclusion of a councilcommissioned report into the likely effects of the 194 wind turbines, each up to 200 metres in height.

The report was presented to the Council’s Cabinet in the summer. It lists how hundreds of thousands of potential visitors are expected to be put off visiting the resort during the construction and operational phases of the wind farm, with many staying away permanently.

Councillor John Beesley, Leader of the Council said: “Residents who attended our public meeting told us they are opposed to this wind farm, and now the report clearly shows that this proposal is bad for Bournemouth.

The unequivocal evidence is that it will have a huge negative impact on our tourism economy, our residents and our environment. These are compelling reasons for us to object and, I hope, also convincing enough for the Planning Inspectorate to recommend refusal to the Secretary of State.”

According to Navitus’ own figures, 32 percent of the resort’s seven million annual visitors would be put off coming to Bournemouth during the four and a half year construction phase, with a long term downturn of 14 percent.

Any loss in the number of visitors to the resort would have a direct potential negative impact on spend in the town and so on employment. The Local Impact Report found that any potential income from the wind farm would be outweighed by a substantial loss to the tourist trade and the local economy.

Councillor Beesley continued: “The beauty of the natural environment, and in particular the view from Bournemouth’s cliffs and seafront is the main attraction for visitors to Bournemouth. Any degree of industrialisation on this would have a negative impact on the resort and those looking to Bournemouth as a conference venue or an attractive place to study. These groups all contribute to the financial health of Bournemouth and we must do all that we can to maintain our town’s attractiveness to them.”

Other concerns raised in the report include the impact on water quality and wildlife, particularly migrating birds.

Furthermore, we are concerned about the long term implications on our residents who live in the direct line of noise and vibrations transmitted across the water from the wind farm. Our report concludes that these are not insignificant.

Smart Streets

road and street maintenance

We’re investing in your streets Have you seen painting teams around the town sprucing up lamp posts, railings and benches over the last few months? This is all part of our Smart Streets programme in which money is being invested in environmental initiatives and street scene improvements all across Bournemouth.

Our painters have targeted streets which have been overdue for maintenance and given them a new lease of life. This has included painting: • 1,114 lamp posts • 1,045 metres of railings • 145 bollards • 92 bins and 97 decorative hanging basket pedestals.

The work has been done using high quality paints so the results should last for years to come.

Other Smart Streets work also includes additional cleaning teams, chewing gum removal, replacing litter bins and repainting road markings and cleaning signs.

Meanwhile, major improvements are underway at Holdenhurst Village and the surrounding rural roads as part of our Road Rescue programme. This area has been targeted due to the affect last winter’s heavy rainfall had on damaging road surfaces.

Work began in August and includes the repairing and resurfacing of rural roads as well as a new drainage system along Holdenhurst Village Road. The new system aims to reduce the risk of future localised flooding and also provides added protection from the affects of rising river levels from the nearby River Stour.

Councillor Michael Filer, Cabinet Member for Transport, Cleansing and Waste, said: “Improving Bournemouth’s road network and street scene appearance is a top priority for the Council. Over the coming months teams will be continuing to carry out work to bring roads up to a standard that our residents expect and make Bournemouth a much more pleasant place to live, work and visit.”

Cemetery Junction railings get a lick of paint

Upgrade to save £750,000 per year

With the onset of autumn the nights are set to draw in. Upgraded street lights will soon be illuminating Bournemouth’s roads and streets with a crisper, whiter and brighter light.

16,500 street lights, including lanterns, columns and illuminated bollards are being replaced with more energy efficient technology.

500 street lights are currently being upgraded each week and the programme will be finished by the end of the year.

We currently spend £1.1 million a year on street lighting energy and the £7 million invested in this energy-efficient scheme will bring long term savings in the region of £750,000 a year.

Your essential guide to recycling On average, 1,400 tonnes of mixed recycling are collected from Big Bin each month. Collected recycling is taken to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) run by Viridor Waste Management in Kent. Here it’s separated and bailed ready to be sold to manufacturers.

How it’s separated: Optical sorters use beams of light to show different plastic types and then separates them using blasts of air.

Made into: Drainage pipes, fleeces and car parts/upholstery.

You can recycle: Juice cartons, milk cartons and soup cartons.

How it’s separated: A water-based process separates the paperboard of the carton from the non-fibre layers.

Made into: Paper products such as toilet roll and writing paper.

You can recycle: Bottles and jars of all colours.

How it’s separated: Shaking tables with different sized holes sort recyclables by weight, size and hardness. As glass is heaviest, it falls through the small holes first.

Made into: Building sand and materials for road surfaces.

Cardboard and paper

You can recycle: Newspapers, magazines, windowed envelopes, office paper, directories, shredded paper, boxes, food sleeves and corrugated card.

How it’s separated: In a large spinning drum, similar to a washing machine, paper and card pass over specially sized holes and are then ready for sorting. Glass, plastic bottles and cans fall through the holes into the next part of the process.

Made into: Newsprint, a range of packaging products and office paper.

Tins and cans

You can recycle: Aluminium and steel cans, food and drink cans, aerosols and metal lids.

How it’s separated: Magnetic sorters separate steel cans as they stick to the magnet, while other recyclables pass by. An electric current is then used to separate out aluminium cans.

Made into: Steel and aluminium cans.

e’re continuing to give you better travel options such as walking, cycling and using public transport. This is so we can reduce congestion, improve the local environment and encourage more people to lead healthier lifestyles.

We’re doing this by making on the ground improvements and introducing travel incentive schemes. Two examples are the recent launch of Co-wheels car club and improvements along one of the busiest commuter routes in Bournemouth…

The new style of cycle lanes improve pedestrian and cyclist safety

Castle Lane West improvements

Improvements to make walking, cycling and bus travel more attractive along this busy commuter route are well underway.

The first phase (at East Way junction) is almost complete with the second phase due to start in October and extending through to the end of December/beginning of January.

The second phase of works on Castle Lane West will see the introduction of new continental style cycle lanes along with pavement and road surface improvements between Broadway roundabout and Yeomans Road roundabout.

Around 30,000 cars travel along Castle Lane West. These improvements will therefore ensure that all pedestrians and cyclists feel confident travelling in and around this area. It will help encourage others to travel in more environmentally friendly ways too.

There may be some disruption as these works continue, however various traffic measures will be in place to keep this to a minimum.

Introducing Co-wheels car club

Have you heard of Co-wheels car club? It’s an exciting new travel scheme which lets you hire a car at your convenience. It’s ideal for those who don’t own a car or those who are unsure whether to buy one.

This unique car club offers low-cost membership and is available to anyone who has held a valid driving licence for over a year. Co-wheels lets members book a car for as little as half an hour to as long as 10 days with access 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

There are currently eight cars parked in convenient locations in and around Bournemouth, with immediate

plans to expand this to 15. A simple hourly and mileage charge covers fuel, tax, maintenance and comprehensive insurance – so all members need to do is the driving.

Using a Co-wheels car costs just 13p a mile and as little as £3.75 per hour (or £17.50 per 24 hours).

Co-wheels is easy to join and members simply book their car online or on the phone.

major road schemes continue

Road improvements take shape in Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch

O

ur major road improvement programme, Three Towns Travel, continues this autumn. It’s designed to encourage more people to cycle, walk and take the bus. And projects all around the area have already been completed, some are finishing soon and further works are set to get underway.

Here’s an update of what’s happening in Bournemouth…

Horseshoe Common works finishing soon

Horseshoe Common has been undergoing a major package of improvements to redevelop the street layout.

Complementing the ongoing regeneration being carried out in this part of town, the works are due to finish by the end of September.

The area will be more attractive, encouraging greater use of the Common with high quality walking and cycling routes, improved road safety with lower speed zones, night time road closures and the removal of the existing roundabout.

Precinct improvements

Better use of space in and around Boscombe Precinct

Boscombe’s town centre will soon see the start of improvements supporting our Backing Boscombe initiative, to make the area a more attractive and vibrant place to live, work and visit.

These improvements will take place where Palmerston Road meets Christchurch Road and on their approach towards each other.

The key elements of the scheme are to: • make changes on the approach roads to slow traffic speed by reducing road space and increasing width of pavements • emphasise key crossing points across traffic routes using contrasting materials and colours • remove all unnecessary street furniture and clutter • relocate the existing traffic signal controlled crossing in favour of a shared space area designed to integrate with the shopping precinct • manage on-street parking and bus stops to reduce unnecessary congestion • open up all entry points to the precinct to make it a more welcoming area • put in a new signal-controlled accessible crossing outside The Royal Arcade.

Did you know that our construction workers recently came across horseshoe shaped foundations (pictured above).

These were part of Bournemouth’s original tramway system dating back to 1902? The historical artefacts will be recreated into a piece of art and displayed at Horseshoe Common as part of the completed improvements.

Further improvements to come

Plans to improve Seabourne Road and plans to enhance the environment and improve road safety on Richmond Hill are due to start. Works also continue on Christchurch Road and the route linking the Bournemouth Travel Interchange and town centre.

Bournemouth’s Arts by the Sea Festival returns for a fourth year with a two week celebration of the arts combining family entertainment, spoken word, dance, music and art. Running from 26 September to 12 October, the festival will be taking place in various locations around the town. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just art curious there’s something to suit every taste.

During the opening weekend (26 to 28 September) Carabosse will transform the Lower Gardens into a magical fiery landscape for three days combining fire, music and spoken word into a spectacular show. The display will be open from 7pm to 11pm and is FREE for visitors of all ages.

Clunk invite younger audiences to join them in the Lower Gardens, on the 26 and 27 September, and unleash their musical potential. Three outdoor actor-musicians will perform an outdoor, theatrical mini gig full of trombones, trumpets and saxophones - perfect for little ones and their families.

For inquisitive minds look no further than Bournemouth Natural Science Society who will be opening their doors to the public on the weekend of 11 to 12 October. You can explore their unique collections which include birds, butterflies, botanic specimens and even an Egyptian mummy. From 11am to 4pm FREE drop in workshops will run for children aged 5 – 12.

Great for music lovers

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra will be opening their 2014 – 2015 Bournemouth season with their Piano Virtuoso conducted by Kirill Karabits on 4 October. It takes place in the Pavilion at 7pm and includes Brahm’s First Symphony and Mozart’s Overture to the Marriage of Figaro. BBC’s Young Musician of the Year 2014 will perform Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. With three very different pieces and a host of outstanding performers, this is a great opportunity to explore classical music. Tickets start from £12.

Mercury prize winner, Talvin Singh, is celebrating 101 years of Indian cinema with a blend of arthouse film ‘Devi’ and live music. Using key elements of the film’s original soundtrack a new potent mix will be created combining classical Indian and modern western sounds to bring the film to life once more. Talvin will be performing at Pavilion Dance on 10 October at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £12.

Do you fancy seeing a combination of sound, dance and free running? Fuel present ‘The Roof’ in a purpose built arena by Jon Bausor, Paralympic Opening Ceremony set designer. Pier Approach is the setting for an adventure that transports the audience to another dimension where they are part of a brutal and unforgiving computer game. Six performances will take place over the opening weekend (26 to 28 September) with tickets starting at £12.

Jaleo Flamenco is returning to Britain after three years with their latest stage show ‘The Compas’. Their much loved flamenco combines explosive footwork, virtuoso guitar playing and heart-wrenching vocals to transport the audience to the heat of southern Spain. The BFX Festival returns from 22 to 28 September. This event is ideal for anyone who shares a love of movies, visual effects, games and animation.

Following on from last year’s Marriage of the Sea Parade, Zerelda Sinclair returns to the festival with Resurrection of the Brides. Haunting choral soundscapes will accompany fifty local women young and old performing both inside the theatre and in the grounds surrounding it. Tickets start at £10.

Near Gone

Near Gone by Two Destination Language will fill the Pavilion Dance Ocean Room at 7.30pm on 8 October with two performers, hundreds of fresh flowers and a storm of emotion. Performed in both English and Bulgarian, and accompanied by pounding gypsy-inspired music, it tells a difficult story of the struggle to convey the utterly unspeakable through words alone. Tickets are £8.

Do you know a ‘problem family’ - children out of control, in trouble with the law, out of work and seemingly out of reach of any of the services designed to help them?

ournemouth’s Turnaround Families programme, which has been running for two years, provides a good insight and greater understanding into the real challenges these families are facing.

Tammy Battison works on the programme in our Children’s Social Care service. She tells us about her work and how, with the right support, families are overcoming their problems.

Tammy said: “We deal with families who have a complex set of reasons for needing extra help. We don’t judge and it’s important that we understand the root cause of problems. We then work very closely together on a plan to bring about a change.

“As an example, one of the families I have worked with suffered the loss of a parent and had many issues such as unresolved anger. This led to the other parent leaving work to look after the children. All of the family found it hard to cope with the significant changes in their lives. I worked with the parent to find new work and the children were introduced to the youth service where they were able to confide in a youth worker and talk about their feelings more easily.

“There are many families in need of this kind of helping hand. By building good relationships and trust with the families we are able to connect with them. This can be half the battle but once that trust is in place we really do start to achieve progress.”

From helping out with the morning routine, to providing a listening ear, the Turnaround team offer a wide range of support to families. Tammy explains: “No day is ever the same and each family we work with has different needs. We look at what can make a family’s life easier and try to do exactly that.

“Our work can be as intensive as it needs to be, some families receive help on a daily basis whilst we may only see others once a week. In the early stages of the programme we are often more involved but once we feel we are not needed we take a step back. It is important that families regain their confidence in doing things for themselves.

“It is a very rewarding job, there are of course bad days as well as good ones. But seeing a family happy and achieving fills me with a great sense of satisfaction.”

Have you recently left school and you’re not sure what to do next? Maybe you’ve changed your mind? Or are you out of education or training for a while and you don’t know where to start?

This stage in life can be tough but don’t panic, we’re here to help. We can support you with any decisions you have to make.

Appointments and drop in sessions with youth advisers are available at venues across the town.

Changes are being made to how children with special educational needs and disability are supported. A new approach aims to put each child and their family at the centre of discussions about the services available.

As a parent you know your child best and it’s vital that you can share your knowledge about how your child is developing. This thinking has prompted a number of changes as part of the government’s Children’s and Families Act. Special Educational Needs (SEN) Statements and Learning Difficulty Assessments (LDAs) are being replaced with Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plans. An EHC Plan looks at all the needs that a child or young person has within education, health and care, through to the age of 25.

Councillor Nicola Greene, Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services said: “We welcome the changes. This new law means that parents, carers and young people will have more opportunities to express their own views and make choices about the help and support they receive.”

nsuring the next generation is knowledgeable, socially responsible and well equipped to deal with life’s challenges is a concern for us all. More so, of course, if you are a parent wanting to ensure your child receives a good education.

Earlier in the year a recent Ofsted inspection recognised the great work of the Council’s school improvement services and the positive impact we have on the quality of education, working together with Bournemouth’s schools.

The world of education is changing and more of Bournemouth’s schools are becoming academies, meaning they are more independent from the Council. All of our secondary schools are now academies and increasing numbers of primary schools are considering making the change as part of small groups of schools or multi-academy trusts.

Working together with headteachers and governors, the school improvement team has a role that sees us support and challenge Bournemouth’s schools to help raise standards of educational achievement even further.

Increasingly our schools are taking on this responsibility for themselves through collaborations and formal partnerships. This means schools are working collectively to support and challenge each other. And along with our two new teaching schools they are working to achieve a good education for every Bournemouth child.

What could you do this autumn at the Coastal Activity Park?

Are memories of long, hot summer days fading fast?

Perhaps you’re feeling a little sluggish? Don’t worry, the Coastal Activity Park at Boscombe stays open all year round to boost energy and agility levels.

There are lots of free activities and a huge choice for every level of fitness. If you need some inspiration then why not set some goals with a friend and complete a total body workout on the 16-unit gym trail? Challenge friends to a table-tennis tournament or have a go at bouldering, which has been a huge hit with all ages.

You could join a group for open water swimming, or a Buggyfit class for new mums. Why not hone your skills at slack-lining or book a court and play beach football or volleyball? There’s still plenty of fun to be had on the water too. Now is a great time for learning to stand-up paddleboard or adventure off in a kayak.

Our autumn schedule is set to continue with many of the regular sessions from the summer, and we’ll continue to welcome group visits. We hope to see you soon.

A new exercise initiative to reduce cases of pre-diabetes, with no gym in sight is being launched. We’ve teamed up with NHS Dorset CCG (the organisation of local GPs) to deliver a pre-diabetes beach project provided by Janus Health.

Not exercising enough to maintain a healthy weight is shown to be a huge factor in the development of diabetes. Research suggests just a 10 percent reduction in body mass in a high risk patient can reduce the chance of diabetes developing by 70 percent.

Conventional exercise referrals will involve attending a gym but this doesn’t suit everyone. It can be an unaffordable and unappealing option and likely out of many people’s comfort zone. Evidence suggests referrals such as this have little or no impact of changing lifestyles long term.

The pre-diabetes beach project is different. Using the beach, parks and open spaces as exercise venues rather than the gym, it shows you how to make use of the free exercise facilities in the area. Strictly no lycra or expensive equipment is needed. When you sign up, there is a one-to-one assessment session with a personal mentor. Patients are encouraged to do 12 exercise sessions in small groups, where the emphasis is on having fun outdoors.

For people who don’t like the idea of beach exercise, we can also offer martial arts classes in conjunction with the UK International Taekwondo Federation. Over 400 people have already registered for the programme, which also educates patients on safe methods of exercising and eating well.

Did you know that all over the country in parks and open spaces parkruns happen each week? Bournemouth’s parkrun is a free 5km timed run that takes place at King’s Park, starting from the Athletics Stadium on Saturdays at 9am.

Around 200 people take part and all ages and abilities are welcome. It’s not a race with others; it’s just you against the clock so you can set your own personal challenge.

The event, which is organised by a friendly and dedicated bunch of volunteers, recently celebrated its first anniversary and is going from strength to strength. Here’s what some of the local Bournemouth parkrun participants have to say….

David is severely sight impaired with distorted vision in both eyes. He runs with a different parkrun volunteer each week.

David said: “I started running last September and took part in my first parkrun around this time. I’ve now completed well over 30 parkruns and have gained at least 10 personal bests.

“I would encourage anyone else with sight loss and an interest in running to give this event a go. The management and volunteers have been fantastic and the camaraderie of the other runners has been brilliant.”

Katie is a junior volunteer and marshals at the event. She said: “I look forward to going to parkrun on a Saturday. Everyone is really friendly and I’ve made lots of new friends.”

Katie’s mum Samantha said: “I attended the very first event and now my husband and son run too, whilst Katie enjoys helping out. I particularly like the Bournemouth event as it has a supportive, family atmosphere.”

Healthwatch Dorset is run by a partnership of experienced local organisations - Help and Care, Citizens Advice in Dorset and Dorset Race Equality Council. Both Healthwatch Dorset and Help with NHS Complaints are funded by your local councils.

There will be many times when you receive excellent services, but there may be times when services fall below your expectations. So what do you do when you want to share your experiences, good or bad? And who do you turn to if you need help with making a complaint?

Healthwatch Dorset gives you a stronger voice to influence and challenge how services are planned and run. This local organisation listens to your experiences and feedback. It holds services to account to improve services for everyone.

Introducing ‘Help with NHS Complaints’

Healthwatch Dorset has been running since April 2013. In their first year they have answered over 1,690 telephone calls alone. They’ve helped people with queries, provided information and listened to people’s different experiences of local services.

They also help people to find their way through the complex NHS system. Demonstrated by a call from an elderly gentleman who was unsure of who to contact when he needed urgent dental treatment at home, as he was waiting to go into respite care. Unable to eat properly and not knowing how to get the help he needed, he turned to Healthwatch Dorset for advice. With his permission, Healthwatch were able to contact the NHS 111 Service on his behalf and arrangements for urgent dental treatment were made.

Living life to the full - whatever your age Growing older happens to everyone. As we get older it’s important that we take part in activities that keep us happy and healthy.

Councillor Blair Crawford, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said: “On 1 October Older People’s Day takes place. It’s an ideal opportunity to celebrate the contributions and achievements of older people in our society. It also serves as a reminder that there are lots of services and sources of information available to support you and your family.”

So, whether you’ve already reached an older age or you’re just planning for the years ahead, here are a few new and existing services that are on hand to help.

New online guide

Did you know that a new online guide is now available that provides information about adult social care and community services?

‘My Life My Care’ aims to help people lead independent lives with the support they need to do so. The site has a wide range of information, from how to access help around the home to personal care services, from dealing with money worries to keeping mobile and staying safe.

There are also tips and advice on health and wellbeing, as well as information about transport, home adaptations, daily living aids and much more to help people make informed choices.

The website has been developed together by your local councils and is for all adults in Dorset, whether you qualify for financial support or pay for your own care. The site will have its official launch on 1 October but you can start using it now. Visit: www.mylifemycare.com

Mayor Chris Mayne

The Mayor plays an important role as a politically impartial chairman of the Full Council meeting. The Mayor remains part of our local history and heritage.

Bournemouth’s Mayor is Councillor Chris Mayne. One of his many autumn duties will be launching the annual Poppy Appeal at the end of October and leading the Remembrance Day Service on Sunday 9 November. The Service will be held at the War Memorial in Bournemouth’s Central Gardens. It begins at 10.57am and a two minutes’ silence will be held at 11am. Commemoration events for the First World War continue throughout 2014 with monthly ‘Aspects of War’ talks from local historians and the ‘Unfolding War’ exhibition returning to Bournemouth Library during November.
