Why Desktop UV Printing Is Moving into the Mainstream A decade ago, only print providers comfortable with industrial inkjet touched UV desktop equipment. Now sign shops, promotional suppliers, engravers, packaging designers and small manufacturers are buying the same class of machine, pulled in by lower prices, smaller footprints and workflows that no longer demand an inkjet specialist to run them. What pulls them in is simple: these systems print directly onto rigid and semirigid objects without the screens, plates or setup time that conventional decoration methods require. Artwork can change from item to item, which suits short runs, one-offs and products carrying variable names, logos or serial numbers.

For many promotional products distributors, the final quarter of the year represents one of the biggest opportunities to drive revenue. Companies are recognizing employees, thanking customers, hosting holiday events, rewarding sales teams and preparing for the year ahead, all of which create significant demand for branded merchandise, apparel, corporate gifts and recognition products. Yet every year, too many salespeople approach the holiday season reactively, waiting for the phone to ring, respond to quote requests as they arrive and hope last year’s customers return on their own. Proactive planning and strategic outreach is paramount to By the time November rolls around, production maximizing holiday sales volume. schedules are tightening, popular merchandise is disappearing from inventory and shipping deadlines begin working against everyone. The most successful distributors, however take a very different approach.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER2026 An Opportunity at Home Just when it appeared Canada and the United States were close to a new trade agreement, negotiations have once again broken down. Our two economies have been closely connected for generations, and the US will remain an important customer, supplier and trading partner regardless of the political climate. But uncertainty also has a way of forcing businesses to reconsider old assumptions. For years, Canadian companies have heard about the need to diversify their customers, suppliers and export markets. The current trade environment is accelerating that conversation, while also putting renewed emphasis the strength of the Canadian marketplace itself. Governments are moving to strengthen “Buy Canadian” initiatives and make it easier for Canadian businesses to sell across provincial boundaries. At the same time, Canada continues to pursue greater access to international markets rather than relying as heavily on a single trading partner.
As organizations reconsider supply chains and purchasing decisions, Canadian businesses have an opportunity to emphasize local relationships, domestic capabilities, Canadian-made merchandise and the advantages of working with businesses closer to home. Companies looking to demonstrate their support for Canadian employees, communities and suppliers may also increasingly turn to branded merchandise to communicate those values. That doesn’t mean abandoning American suppliers or pretending that tariffs and trade disruptions don’t create legitimate challenges. It does mean becoming more adaptable. Our industry has always been particularly good at that. Perhaps this latest trade setback should therefore be viewed not simply as another obstacle, but as another reason to look more closely at the opportunities around us. Canada cannot control every decision made beyond its borders. What Canadian businesses can control is how quickly we adapt, where we invest and whom we choose to do business with. And sometimes, looking outward reminds us just how much opportunity exists right here at home.

News {Business Development} Holiday Selling, Continued from Page 1
They understand that holiday sales are won long before the first gift is ordered, so their calendars are filled with proactive conversations, account reviews and creative ideas designed to help customers plan ahead rather than scramble at the last minute. Instead of simply responding to requests for products, they position themselves as trusted advisors who help clients create memorable experiences for employees, customers and prospects. If you want to finish the year on a high note, here are six strategies that can help turn the busy holiday buying period into your strongest selling season yet.
1. Start Before Your Customers Do
One of the biggest mistakes distributors make is assuming their customers are already thinking about holiday programs. In reality, the HR manager may be focused on recruitment and employee retention, the marketing department is preparing fall campaigns, and the business owner is trying to finish the quarter. Holiday gifting, year-end recognition and December events may not become priorities until much later, and that’s exactly where the opportunity lies. Rather than waiting for clients to contact you, start the conversation yourself. Avoid the generic, “Have you thought about holiday gifts yet?” and ask questions that encourage clients to think about their objectives. How are they planning to recognize employees this year? Are they doing something for their most valuable customers? Will they be holding a holiday event? Do they have remote employees who need gifts shipped directly to their homes? Did last year’s program work well, or would they like to do something different? These conversations accomplish more than generating orders. They position you as the person helping customers think ahead, while also giving you more time to source creative merchandise, develop packaging options, arrange decoration and manage fulfillment. Starting earlier isn’t simply about beating production deadlines; it gives you the luxury of presenting better ideas.
2. Your Best Opportunities Already Know You
Prospecting remains an important part of sales, but the beginning of the holiday selling season is also an excellent time to look inward. Many distributors spend considerable energy searching for new customers while overlooking the opportunities sitting inside their own CRM, order-management system or previous invoices. Review the customers who purchased holiday merchandise, corporate gifts, apparel, awards or event products during the past two or three years. Look beyond the obvious repeat order and consider what the purchase tells you about the account. A company that ordered employee gifts last December may also need merchandise for a year-end meeting. A customer that purchased branded jackets may be interested in a coordinated winter kit. Someone who ordered 100 gifts last year may now have 150 employees or additional locations. Don’t overlook customers who didn’t purchase last year either. Budgets change, companies grow, decision-makers move and programs that were cancelled one year may return the next. A simple conversation can uncover opportunities that would otherwise remain invisible. Existing customers also provide an important advantage: trust has already been established. They know how you work, and you likely have their artwork, brand standards and previous order information on file. That means you can spend less time proving your capabilities and more time developing the next idea.
Starting earlier isn’t simply about beating production deadlines; it gives you the luxury of presenting better ideas. 6
3. Sell the Experience, Not the Product
Customers have almost unlimited access to products today. They can search online for drinkware, apparel, bags, technology accessories and gift sets within seconds, which means presenting another catalogue of merchandise isn’t necessarily adding much value. Your expertise becomes far more important when you shift the conversation from what the customer wants to buy to what the customer wants to accomplish. An employee holiday gift isn’t simply a hoodie or insulated tumbler; it’s an opportunity to make someone feel recognized and appreciated. A premium gift sent to an important client isn’t just another branded item; it’s a way to reinforce a valuable business relationship. Once the objective is clear, the product conversation becomes much easier. You can recommend merchandise, decoration, packaging and presentation that support the desired experience rather than simply presenting a collection of items within a price range. This approach also moves the discussion away from unit price and toward overall value, where knowledgeable promotional products professionals have a much greater opportunity to differentiate themselves.
Before the holiday season ends, schedule a January planning conversation with your most valuable accounts. You’ll enter the new year with opportunities already in motion while many competitors are only beginning to rebuild their pipelines. and maintain accurate notes about what worked well. When appropriate, approach a returning customer with their previous program already summarized: what they purchased, how many units they ordered, what they spent and what could be updated this year. Technology can make this even more effective. CRM reminders can flag seasonal accounts before the customer begins shopping, while online stores can simplify programs involving employee choice, multiple locations or individual shipping. Templates can streamline approvals, and automation can help manage routine follow-up without sacrificing the personal relationship. The objective isn’t to add more technology for the sake of technology. It’s to remove unnecessary steps. If working with you feels easier than starting over with another distributor, you’ve created a powerful reason for customers to return.
6. Think Beyond December
4. Create Urgency Before Deadlines Create It
Holiday selling has an unavoidable reality: the calendar eventually wins. Inventory becomes tighter, decorators become busier, couriers face higher volumes and customers who waited too long suddenly discover that their first choice is no longer available. The best distributors create urgency without resorting to pressure. They educate customers about realistic timelines and help them understand the advantages of making decisions earlier. If a particular product requires longer decoration time, explain it. If custom packaging needs additional production, build that into the schedule. If inventory is moving quickly, let the customer know before it becomes a problem. This is particularly important with programs involving multiple suppliers, individual shipments or customized gift sets, where a single delay can affect the entire project. Developing a simple timeline showing approval dates, artwork deadlines, production windows and expected delivery can make the process considerably easier for both the distributor and the customer. Clients rarely object to being helped to avoid a problem. When urgency is based on useful information rather than sales pressure, it reinforces your role as a professional who understands the complexities behind the order and is protecting the customer’s interests.
5. Make Reordering (and Buying) Easy
One of the most overlooked competitive advantages in the promotional products business is simply being easy to work with. Holiday buyers are busy, and the supplier who removes friction from the purchasing process has an enormous advantage. Every repeat order should be easier than the first. Keep artwork organized, record decoration specifications, document preferred colours and sizes, retain previous quantities
IMPRINT CANADA | September/October 2026
The final shipment leaving your warehouse shouldn’t mark the end of the relationship. In fact, a successful holiday program can provide the perfect opening for the next sales conversation. Follow up after delivery and ask how the program was received. Did employees enjoy the gifts? Did clients respond positively? Was distribution easy? Is there anything they would change next year? This feedback helps improve future programs while demonstrating that your interest extends beyond getting the invoice paid. Then start looking forward. January and the first quarter create an entirely new range of opportunities, including sales kickoffs, employee onboarding, recognition programs, winter apparel, conferences, trade shows and new marketing initiatives. Companies also begin working with refreshed budgets and annual objectives, creating an ideal time for distributors to introduce new ideas. Before the holiday season ends, schedule a January planning conversation with your most valuable accounts. You’ll enter the new year with opportunities already in motion while many competitors are only beginning to rebuild their pipelines.
Finish Strong by Planning Early
The distributors who consistently enjoy strong fourth quarters aren’t necessarily selling different products than everyone else. They’re having better conversations earlier, staying organized and helping customers achieve business objectives rather than simply filling orders. That’s an important distinction because holiday selling has never really been about finding the perfect gift. It’s about understanding who is receiving it, why the company is giving it and what experience the client wants to create. The product is simply the vehicle that helps deliver that message. Start those conversations early, revisit the customers who already trust you, sell the experience rather than the item, communicate deadlines clearly and make the entire process as easy as possible. Then use the goodwill generated by a successful holiday program to begin the next conversation. The strongest holiday selling season doesn’t begin when the rush arrives in November. It begins with the conversations you start today.

How to Ramp Up “Just-Out” Salespeople Why Your Onboarding Process Isn’t Built for Them By Troy Harrison
There’s a generational trend that is actively reshaping Business-to-Business (B2B) salesperson hiring practices, and most companies aren’t prepared for it. More and more organizations are hiring “just-outs.” These are salespeople that are just out of college and are starting their first professional job.
This isn’t a typical entry-level hire who worked through college or spent time in another industry. These are people who went from graduation to the sales floor with essentially no meaningful work experience. And if companies treat them like traditional entry-level hires, they’re setting them up to fail.
The Critical Difference Between Yesterday’s and Today’s Just-Outs
When hiring a just-out, the company isn’t just teaching them how to sell a product or navigate a sales process. The company is teaching them how to be a professional salesperson. This involves learning how to manage time; learning how to handle rejection and keep moving forward; how to prioritize competing demands, and how to conduct themselves in everyday business conversations. In reality, Gen-Z is probably less prepared for this than past generations, but Gen-Z hires can undoubtedly be big successes too, with the right training and mentorship. Past entry-level salespeople might have been young and with limited experience, but they knew how to show up, manage a workload, and handle professional interactions. Today’s just-outs don’t typically have this same disposition. Rather, they’re extremely bright, enthusiastic, and eager, but they’re essentially starting from zero when it comes to sales knowledge and general business acumen. This distinction matters enormously for onboarding, training, coaching, and the expectations during the rampup period. The onboarding process that works for someone with two years of experience will not work for someone whose previous job was organizing study groups.
More and more organizations are hiring “just-outs.” These are salespeople that are just out of college and are starting their first professional job. What Companies Are Getting Right
Companies hiring just-outs are likely selecting well. These young professionals are intelligent, coachable, and genuinely enthusiastic about learning. They’re not jaded. They haven’t picked up bad habits from previous sales roles. More importantly, just-outs crave structure, knowledge, and training. They want experienced mentors, probably to a greater degree than past generations. They’re not resisting accountability or metrics, but rather actively seeking them. This is an enormous asset, because the window to capitalize on this eagerness is narrow. Companies need to act before frustration sets in or bad habits develop.
Where Most Companies Go Wrong Compressed Onboarding
The biggest mistake is rushing just-outs into live prospect interactions. Some companies put young salespeople on the phone making cold calls within their first week or two. This might work with experienced hires. It’s disastrous with just-outs who lack the foundational knowledge and professional confidence to handle live conversations. The result is persistent insecurity rooted in “not knowing what they don’t know.” Onboarding, Continued on Page 12

News {Business Development} UV Printing, Continued from Page 1
UV Desktop Printing systems print directly onto rigid and semi-rigid objects without the screens, plates or setup time that other conventional decoration methods require. That flexibility suits personalization. Consumers want products tailored to a specific interest or occasion, and businesses want merchandise adapted for different customers or departments. The real opportunity is turning an inexpensive blank, a phone case, a bottle, a desk accessory, into something that can be priced very differently.
driven by AI can spot an object’s position and orientation on the print bed and align artwork automatically, cutting reliance on dedicated jigs. Better workflow tools are simplifying multi-pass textured printing, while automated height detection, nozzle monitoring and ink agitation are cutting down setup time and how much an operator must babysit the job. Carriage speed alone doesn’t determine a working day’s output. File preparation, loading, positioning, cleaning and unloading all eat into it. That matters because a system that removes manual steps can be worth more to a business than one with a faster theoretical print speed.
Applications Are Expanding
Promotional products and personalized giftware remain the core application, but the range of applications keeps growing with corporate merchandise, event giveaways, awards and seasonal lines. Variable artwork lets a business handle small, custom online orders without slowing down the production line for a single unit.
Automation, Workflow and Artificial Intelligence
As jobs get more complex, vendors use more automation, creating easier workflow tools and, of course, adding Artificial Intelligence (AI). Cameras and scanning systems
That growth creates a real problem for buyers. Alongside established Japanese vendors like Roland, Epson, Mutoh and Mimaki, a wave of new entrants, many out of China, has arrived with slick websites, social media influencers singing their praises and price tags well below the Japanese incumbents. The challenge is cutting through the hype to find what a given device actually does well. Brochures, spec sheets and glowing YouTube or TikTok reviews make this a hard call. Resolution numbers keep climbing and every device promises vibrant colour, textured effects and support for an ever-expanding list of substrates. None of that tells you what happens to throughput speed once white ink, varnish or texture gets added, whether brand colours hold up across a long run, how durable the finished piece really is, or how much of the day an operator spends babysitting the machine. Those factors drive profitability and customer satisfaction, yet none of them are easy to compare before purchase. Substrate compatibility is just as slippery: a claim that a printer “supports” metal, plastic or glass says nothing about how a specific material will actually hold up.
A Need for Independent, Repeatable Testing
As the performance gap narrows on paper and the complexity of the buying process rises, objective benchmark data becomes even more valuable. Buyers of office printers, wide-format systems and production presses have long benefited from independent testing that separates marketing claims from measurable performance. The desktop UV sector has now reached a point where it needs the same level of scrutiny.
More Than CMYK
White and clear inks have been an important part of desktop UV printing since its early days, enabling the decoration of coloured and transparent substrates along with gloss and matte finishes. More recent advances in ink formulations, primers and layering techniques, however, have pushed those capabilities even further, with repeated passes of clear or white ink now producing raised lettering, braille, textured graphics and simulated embossing. These effects raise a product’s perceived value, but they come with production variables that don’t show up on a spec sheet. Add in white ink, primer, clear coatings or multiple raised layers, and productivity drops. Ink circulation, curing, registration and maintenance all get harder to manage as the job gets more complex.
Choosing the Right Device Is Getting Increasingly Difficult
UV Direct to Object and UV Direct to Film (DTF) – Competitors or Complementary Technologies?
UV DTF printing is also growing fast. Instead of printing directly onto the final object, these systems print the image using UV inks onto a film that is applied to the product afterward, extending UV decoration to curved, irregular or difficult-to-load items that a conventional flatbed can’t handle. Direct-to-object printing and UV DTF will likely end up complementary rather than competing. Direct printing suits repeatable products that can be positioned accurately; UV DTF suits irregular shapes and low-volume items direct printing can’t handle efficiently.

Meaningful evaluation must go beyond engine speed. Productivity should be measured with realistic jobs and print modes. Image quality should cover colour accuracy, application to curved and textured surfaces, fine detail, gradients and barcode or QR-code readability across common substrates. Consistency is equally important for repeat orders and brand-sensitive work, while durability testing can show how output withstands scratching, rubbing, cleaning chemicals and prolonged light exposure. Running costs matter just as much. Ink consumption, cleaning routines, maintenance, failed prints and operator time make up the real cost of production, even though headline speed and resolution get most of the attention.
will need clearer evidence of how systems perform in practice, not just on paper. When specifications converge, the real differentiation shows up in testing.
Looking Forward
Headline resolution won’t be what separates the next generation of desktop UV printers. Automation, versatility and production efficiency will. Smarter object recogni-
tion and positioning, better ink and primer chemistry, and a growing ability to decorate irregular surfaces will keep expanding both the applications and the audience. What will actually separate one system from another is how reliably and cheaply it turns a digital file into a finished product someone can sell. Have questions or want to learn more? About the Author: David Sweetnam (pictured, left) is an industry veteran with more than 30 years of experience in digital printing. He develops and oversees Keypoint Intelligence’s test operations and programs for graphic arts, production cut-sheet, textile and industrial print devices. The test programs themselves have become respected, independent benchmarks, with Keypoint techs traveling the world to gain access to hardware, often before their launch. David also attends trade shows across continents and is a regular keynote speaker at digital textile events.
Benchmarking Real-World Performance
That gap is why Keypoint Intelligence is launching a dedicated Desktop UV Printer Test Service, built on a consistent, independent methodology. Instead of judging devices on isolated specifications, it builds a full picture of how each system performs in realistic production: productivity, image quality, consistency, durability, usability and day-today operation. No single printer will come out as universally “best.” Manufacturers make different engineering trade-offs, balancing speed, quality, versatility, automation and cost for different users. Independent benchmarking gives buyers evidence to match a system to their own priorities and gives manufacturers a way to show strengths a spec sheet can’t capture. Desktop UV printing is moving into the mainstream. As applications multiply and devices get more capable, buyers

tioning, objection handling, LinkedIn outreach, and fullcycle sales management.
Lack of Structure and Tools
Just-outs understand they need to hit activity metrics, and in fact, they like the roadmap that comes with good activity metrics (which you have, right?). What they don’t have is the process knowledge and tools to consistently achieve those targets. They need documented processes, quick-reference guides, standard timelines and procedures, and a structured weekly routine. Without these, they’re constantly making decisions that experienced salespeople make instinctively. Just-outs don’t have those instincts yet.
The Mentorship Gap
Leadership has good intentions but multiple responsibilities mean accessibility becomes an issue. Just-outs generate a high volume of questions about process, products, pricing, and professional norms. They need someone they can go to without worrying about interrupting something more important. Without that designated resource, they either hesitate to ask and make mistakes, or they interrupt leadership constantly and slow everyone down.
Define a Weekly Routine
At this stage, just-outs need structure. Define what a productive week looks like: daily LinkedIn engagement, dedicated prospecting blocks, field time for in-person visits, networking events, and sufficient activity to generate meeting targets. Providing this structure isn’t micromanaging, but rather it’s responsible development. to questions that come up on most calls. It should cover 80 per cent of what they’ll encounter in their first six months. Call them FAQ guides, call them cheat sheets, call them what you want, just have them available.
Document the Sales Process
Action Steps That Actually Work
Write down the steps and stages from initial outreach through close. Include standard timelines, clear definitions of each stage, and criteria for moving opportunities forward. A documented playbook becomes a training asset for every future hire.
Create Quick-Reference Resources
Establish a Structured Prospecting Cadence
Develop internal guides covering products, services, and common FAQs. Include product attributes, common objections and responses, pricing guidelines, and answers
The companies that figure out how to properly onboard, train, and develop just-outs will build high-performing sales teams. The companies that treat them like traditional hires will burn through talented young people who deserved better.
Create a defined outreach cadence incorporating phone, LinkedIn, and email. Specify timing, sequencing, and messaging for each touchpoint. Just-outs struggle with “what should I do next?” A structured cadence removes that ambiguity.
Build a Buddy System
Pair each just-out with an experienced salesperson who serves as their designated go-to for day-to-day questions. Formalize this with scheduled ride-alongs, call observations, and regular check-ins. The best learning happens when just-outs can shadow experienced salespeople and debrief what they observed.
Invest in Real Sales Training
Role-playing exercises are useful, but they’re not a substitute for structured sales training. Just-outs need formal instruction in prospecting methodology, discovery ques-
12 IMPRINT CANADA | September/October 2026
Give Them Real-World Experience
If the company sells trade show exhibits, send them to trade shows. If selling manufacturing solutions, get them on factory floors. Just-outs can’t sell with conviction when they haven’t experienced the environment their prospects operate in. This experiential learning accelerates development more than any training manual.
The Wins Are There To Be Had
Just-outs require more investment upfront than traditional entry-level hires, but they bring enthusiasm, coachability, and fresh energy that experienced salespeople often lack. The companies that figure out how to properly onboard, train, and develop just-outs will build loyal, high-performing sales teams. The companies that treat them like traditional hires will burn through talented young people who deserved better. The difference isn’t the people being hired. It’s the infrastructure being built to support them. Get that infrastructure right, and eager college graduates become productive salespeople faster than expected. Get it wrong, and companies will wonder why these smart young professionals can’t figure it out. The choice, and the responsibility, belongs to leadership.

Are You Bothering Customers? 4 Tips to Follow-Up Like A Pro to Grow Your Business By Jeff Mowatt
Following-up with potential customers a few days after they first contact you is not bothering them. You’re doing them a favour. Unfortunately, we often avoid following-up for fear of being considered a pest. The truth is customers may have every intention of contacting you anyway, but they have a full inbox and are distracted. Next time you’re wondering if you should contact the customer, go ahead and touch base. You’re not being bothersome; you’re being helpful. Working with sales and service teams for over 25 years and observing the practices of the most successful reps, I’ve found this to be true. A sales manager I was advising didn’t hesitate when I asked her, “What’s one thing you think your reps could do more of to enhance their sales success?” Her immediate response: “Follow-up!!” We often get so caught up in responding to customers and prospects, or hunting for new business, we neglect to pro-actively follow-up as thoroughly or consistently as we should. Ironically, following-up is one of the easiest and highest payoff activities we can do to grow our business. Often we don’t follow-up because we’re afraid of hearing a no, or we can’t think of a good excuse to stay in touch. Here are 4 tips I share in my seminars that will make follow up easier and more lucrative:
Chances are they have a lot on their plate and they may have been inadvertently putting your proposal on the back burner. They may already have you on their to-do list to contact for the next step. So, remember you’re not interrupting customers by following up; you’re being courteous and doing them a favour.
1. Customers Want Follow-up
If it turns out that the potential customer has indeed gone ahead with another supplier, then epitomize graciousness. In an upbeat tone let them that you’re pleased they are moving forward with their plans. If you know and respect the successful competitor, then mention that you’ve heard good things about that company.
Sales reps are often concerned that following-up with a potential customer after the first contact will come across as pushy. Keep in mind that customers responsible for making buying decisions are, by definition busy and successful people.
2. Electronic is Easy
If you’ve given the customer a price or proposal, they may have unfortunately opted to go with your competitor. So, they might not be receptive to your phone call because they’re afraid you may not take rejection well. Or that you’ll try to talk them out of their decision. That’s awkward for everyone. That’s why following-up electronically with an email or text will often get you a faster, more honest response. When sending an email, it’s still important to not come across as pushy. Simply state in your subject line that this is a “Courtesy Follow-up.” It reminds them that you are being conscientious and thorough. That builds trust. In the body of your mail don’t just ask whether the person has taken some action or made a decision. That can sound blunt; almost like an accusation. Instead, ask if they’ve had a chance yet to take action. That wording comes across polite and empathetic.
3. Be Better at Losing
14 IMPRINT CANADA | September/October 2026
4. Out of sight - out of mind
Just because you did some business one time with a customer doesn’t necessarily mean they think of you or remember you. In reality, customers are more focused on their own businesses than they are on their suppliers. That’s why it’s so important to stay in contact. Forget the conventional ‘just checking in’ time wasters. Instead, provide them with regular tips that can help them to achieve their goals. You can do this via email, social media, or organizing professional development events for your customers and their team members. Add in some food, call it a lunch and learn, and they will remember you. Interacting one time with a customer or prospect doesn’t mean you have a relationship. It means you had a transaction. Following-up proactively and regularly helps transform a transaction into a relationship. It proves you remember that person and are organized enough to stay in touch. That builds trust, which is a critical step towards positioning you as their Trusted Advisor. Are You Worth Listening to?
Six Ways to Maximize Your Digital Marketing Efforts in Today’s Competitive Market By Adriano Aldini, Imprint Canada
There has never been an easier time to market a business, and perhaps never a harder time to get anyone to pay attention. Promotional products distributors and decorators have access to marketing capabilities that would have been unimaginable for a small or mid-sized company a generation ago. A distributor can publish a video to thousands of potential customers from a smartphone, send a targeted email campaign in minutes, showcase a completed project on LinkedIn, automate follow-up through a CRM and use artificial intelligence to help develop everything from prospecting emails to marketing campaigns. The problem is that everyone else can do it too. Customers are navigating overflowing inboxes, social media feeds, text messages, online advertisements, videos, newsletters and constant notifications. Your marketing isn’t simply competing against other promotional products companies; it’s competing against virtually everything demanding your customer’s attention. That makes attention one of the most valuable currencies in modern marketing. Simply posting more often or sending another promotional email isn’t enough. Successful digital marketing requires a deliberate strategy that gives customers a reason to notice you, remember you and ultimately trust you with their business. Here are six ways distributors and decorators can make their digital marketing efforts work harder in an increasingly noisy marketplace.
2. Create Content Your Customers Actually Care About
Take a quick look at the social media feeds of companies in almost any industry and you’ll see the same problem: businesses talking primarily about themselves. New product. New machine. New employee. New award. Another product. Another promotion. There’s nothing inherently wrong with sharing company news, but customers don’t wake up in the morning wondering what their promotional products supplier posted on Instagram. They’re thinking about their own challenges: attracting employees, strengthening company culture, generating leads, planning an event, recognizing customers or getting merchandise delivered before an important deadline. Effective content enters that conversation.
1. Stop Trying to Be Everywhere
One of the easiest traps in digital marketing is believing your company needs to maintain an active presence on every available platform. LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, email, blogs and emerging channels can quickly create an exhausting content treadmill, particularly for smaller distributors and decorators without dedicated marketing departments. Instead of spreading your efforts across six platforms and doing none of them particularly well, knowing where your core customers actually spend their time will allow you to focus your marketing efforts more strategically. A distributor selling corporate recognition programs, employee apparel and executive gifts may find LinkedIn considerably more valuable than TikTok. A decorator showcasing embroidery, screen printing or direct-to-film capabilities may benefit tremendously from visual platforms such as Instagram and YouTube, where the production process itself can become compelling content. Once you have determined where your core audience lives online, you can establish one or two channels as your primary platforms and use everything else selectively. This also allows you to repurpose strong ideas rather than constantly creating something new. A two-minute video explaining how embroidery affects logo detail can become a LinkedIn post, a short video clip, an email tip and a website article. One well-developed customer case study might generate several weeks of useful marketing material. The goal isn’t to be everywhere. It’s to be consistently valuable somewhere.
Your marketing isn’t simply competing against other promotional products companies; it’s competing against virtually everything demanding your customer’s attention.
Attention is one of the most valuable currencies in modern digital marketing.
Instead of simply posting a photo of an insulated tumbler, show how a company could incorporate premium drinkware into an employee wellness program. Rather than posting another picture of a decorated hoodie, explain how organizations can build an employee apparel program people actually want to wear. A decorator might show why one logo works beautifully with embroidery while another needs to be simplified, or demonstrate the difference between various decoration methods. Behind-the-scenes content can be particularly powerful in the promotional products industry because much of what distributors and decorators do is visually interesting. Show embroidery machines running, screen-printing setups, packaging being assembled or a large order preparing to ship. Explain what is happening and why it matters to the finished product. Your expertise is the marketing asset. The product is simply the visual aid. When customers regularly learn something from your content, your company gradually moves from being another vendor in their feed to becoming a source of ideas and expertise.
3. Make Your Marketing More Human
Artificial intelligence has dramatically lowered the barrier to producing content. Businesses can now generate social posts, emails, articles, product descriptions and marketing ideas almost instantly. That’s incredibly useful, but it creates a new problem: the Internet is becoming flooded with perfectly acceptable, completely forgettable content. The opportunity for distributors and decorators is to use AI to improve efficiency without allowing it to erase personality. AI can help brainstorm campaign ideas, summarize
16 IMPRINT CANADA | September/October 2026
When customers regularly learn something from your content, your company gradually moves from being another vendor in their feed to becoming a source of ideas and expertise. research, draft an email, turn a longer article into social posts or create a first version of a video script. However, the final content should still contain something uniquely yours: an opinion, customer experience, lesson learned, industry observation or example from the field. Video is especially effective for this reason. You don’t necessarily need a studio, professional camera crew or elaborate production. A salesperson explaining three things to consider when ordering apparel for a company event can build more familiarity and trust than a beautifully designed graphic because customers can see the person behind the business. The promotional products industry remains deeply relationship-driven. Digital marketing shouldn’t replace those relationships; it should help create and strengthen them. Use technology to make your marketing more efficient, then use people to make it memorable.
4. Turn Your Customer List into a Marketing Asset
Social media receives enormous attention, but one of your company’s most valuable digital assets may already be sitting inside your CRM or email database. Unlike social media followers, your customer database represents people and companies with whom you have a direct relationship. You aren’t dependent on an algorithm deciding whether they see your content, and many of these contacts have already purchased from you, requested a quote or expressed interest in your services. Yet many companies communicate with this database only when they want to sell something. A stronger strategy is to stay useful throughout the year. Instead of sending constant promotions, develop communications around seasonal opportunities, business challenges and useful ideas. Before trade show season, share ideas for increasing booth engagement. Ahead of summer, discuss employee appreciation events and outdoor merchandise. In early fall, help customers begin planning holiday recognition programs before production schedules tighten. Technology makes this increasingly easy to personalize. CRM and email platforms can segment customers according to industry, purchase history, interests or previous activity. Someone who regularly purchases employee apparel doesn’t necessarily need the same communication as an event planner ordering conference merchandise. Automation can also help ensure opportunities aren’t forgotten. A customer who placed a large holiday order last October can automatically trigger a reminder for the salesperson in August. A prospect who downloaded a corporate gift guide can receive a thoughtful follow-up rather than disappearing into a spreadsheet. The objective is not to automate the relationship. It’s to automate the reminders and routine processes that help you maintain the relationship.
5. Show Your Work, and Your Results
Promotional products companies have a significant digital marketing advantage: you create tangible things. So use them!

News {BUSINESS Development} Digital Marketing, continued from Page 16
Rather than relying exclusively on supplier photography or generic product images, show completed projects whenever customer permission allows. A beautifully packaged employee welcome kit, creative event merchandise, embroidered apparel program or custom recognition package tells a much stronger story when customers can see how everything came together. Better still, explain the thinking behind the project. What was the client’s objective? What challenge needed to be solved? Why were particular products selected? How did decoration, packaging or fulfillment contribute to the program? What did the finished campaign accomplish? This transforms a product photograph into a miniature case study. Customer testimonials and reviews can reinforce that credibility. A distributor saying it provides outstanding service is advertising. A customer explaining how the distributor solved a last-minute fulfillment problem is evidence. Decorators can apply the same strategy by showing before-and-after artwork, complicated embroidery projects, unusual print locations or challenging garments. Educational content demonstrating craftsmanship helps potential customers understand why quality decoration isn’t simply a commodity. In a marketplace where customers can find thousands of products online, demonstrating what you know and what you can execute becomes a powerful differentiator.
commercial value could be limited. Meanwhile, a LinkedIn post seen by 600 people might generate a conversation with an HR director responsible for a national employee recognition program. The second post is far superior. Determine what you actually want your marketing to accomplish. Is the objective generating qualified leads, increasing repeat business, securing appointments, driving website inquiries or expanding particular product categories? Once the objective is clear, work backward and identify the activities contributing to it. Website analytics can show which pages attract visitors and where inquiries originate. Email platforms can identify which subjects and topics generate engagement. CRM systems can track leads from initial contact through completed sale. Even a simple question like, “How did you hear about us?” can provide valuable information over time. Then use that information to refine your strategy. If educational LinkedIn posts consistently generate conversations while generic product posts generate little response, create more educational content. If an email about employee recognition produces inquiries, develop additional resources around that subject. Digital marketing shouldn’t be a collection of activities your company performs because everyone else is doing them. It should be an evolving system that becomes smarter as you learn what your customers respond to.
6. Ignore the Applause; Measure What Leads to Business
You Don’t Need More “Noise”
Digital marketing provides an almost endless supply of numbers: followers, impressions, likes, views, clicks, shares and engagement rates. These metrics can be useful, but they can also create the illusion that marketing is succeeding when it isn’t producing meaningful business results. A post receiving 10,000 views may feel successful, but if none of those viewers represent potential customers, its
Determine what you actually want your marketing to accomplish...Once the objective is clear, work backward and identify the activities contributing to it.
The temptation is to believe that the solution to declining attention is more content: more posts, more emails, more videos and more advertising. Often, the opposite is true. Distributors and decorators don’t need to contribute more noise. They need to become more relevant within the noise that already exists. Focus your efforts on the platforms that matter. Create content around customer problems rather than your own products. Use AI and automation to improve efficiency without sacrificing personality. Treat your customer database as a valuable marketing asset. Demonstrate your expertise through real work and customer success stories, and measure results based on business opportunities rather than vanity metrics. Most importantly, remember what digital marketing is supposed to accomplish: it isn’t about becoming an influencer, accumulating followers or producing content simply to satisfy an algorithm. It’s about making sure that when a
18 IMPRINT CANADA | September/October 2026
customer needs branded merchandise, decorated apparel, recognition products or creative ideas, your company is one of the first they think of. In an increasingly crowded marketplace, you don’t have to be the loudest company in the room. You have to be the one worth listening to.
