JULY/AUGUST2024 The Future is Now A recent International Monetary Fund report projects Canada to be the fastest growing economy among G7 and other advanced economies.

The Canadian economy is projected to grow by 1.3 per cent this year and by 2.4 per cent next year, with the U.S. at 1.9 per cent and the UK at 1.4 per cent, respectively for 2025.

On the same day, a new survey conducted by KPMG Canada found that of the 350 business owners they interviewed, over 90 per cent feared that their companies will feel the impact of extreme weather this year (forest fires, extreme heat, flooding).

The KPMG survey found that while 88 per cent of the participating companies were willing to make more investments to support climate-related goals, 80 per cent stated that their companies lacked the resources to make emissions reductions a priority. The survey also noted that among the biggest challenges facing companies, worker productivity and supply change disruptions topped the list.

What To Do When Customers Ignore You Five business building tips that cost nothing

Remember the days when people noticed good customer service, talked about it, and most importantly – rewarded you for it?

Happy customers would return and spread the word. In today’s fast paced world however, people are so rushed moving to the next thing, or so distracted by their mobile devices, that good customer service is overlooked.

Fortunately, as I share in my seminars, there are several easy things you can do that will enhance your service and boost your

business which your customers will actually notice. Best of all, they cost you nothing. Here are five for starters…

1. Be the voice of reason

Here’s a secret I discovered when clients started bringing me in to assess and offer feedback on their call centres. You can generally tell within 10 seconds whether the service rep will calm the customer or irritate them.

It’s not enough to just listen to customer needs and then offer solutions. You need to be perceived as actively listening.

It’s not what the employee says – it’s the sound of their voice when they say it. Employees who have thin or high voices, mumble, or add useless words (i.e. “ya know”, “kinda”, “sorta”) garner less respect from customers than those who are more articulate.

Conversely, when you lower your tone and enunciate – by crispening-up your consonants and rounding-out your vowels – you’ll be perceived as more reasonable and intelligent.

By watching your language you’ll transition in the customer’s mind from being merely a clerk or order taker into becoming a Trusted Advisor.

2. Show-off your homework

Today’s customers are so busy trying to juggle the demands of everyday life that they are amazed when someone goes to the trouble to do some homework and find out about them.

Before a client meeting, spend a few minutes doing a web search on the customer and the company. Start the conversation with a few comments along the lines of, “I read that you have…”; “I noticed on your website…”; This is a wonderful way of demonstrating your intelligence while focusing on the customer. In the customer’s mind that makes you brilliant.

3. Listen loudly

Customers are more impressed by your knowledge of their unique individual needs. Today’s customers are assaulted by information coming at them via social media, emails, sound bites, and micro-ads.

That means you’ll be noticed more if you’re a good listener rather than a smooth talker. It’s not enough to just listen to customer needs and then offer solutions. You need to be perceived as listening.

Fortunately, this is as easy as saying two words after your customer explains their needs: “Sounds like…” Starting your comments like this forces you to paraphrase your understanding of their needs. It’s also a great lead-in to expressing empathy, as in, “It sounds like you’ve had a frustrating time trying to fix this.”

You’ll be seen as someone who truly gets your customer. That’s listening loudly. And customers do notice.

4. Make time shrink

Imagine a customer or co-worker asks you to send them information that might normally be sent the next day. You could say: “I won’t be able to send it to you until tomorrow.”’ Contrast that response with, “You’ll receive it within 24 hours.” The 24 hour statement sounds like a stronger commitment because it’s specific. And it sounds faster because you’re talking hours not days. By changing your wording you appear to make time shrink. Customers will take notice.

5. Close the loop

In attempting to grow the business, we are often so focused on gaining more customers that we neglect those we already have. Case in point is when we deliver a product or service without any follow-up.

Closing the loop can be as simple as leaving a 20 second voice mail message with the customer stating that you’re making a courtesy check-in call to ensure that everything’s okay with their recent purchase. Again, you will be noticed and appreciated.

These tips for getting noticed by customers simply require a few adjustments to the way employees communicate.

This is called an emergent culture.

Whatever energy the leader brings to the company will be the energy that other people pick up and assimilate in order to fit in and succeed. If the leader is overwhelmed or in survival mode, that is going to set the tone for the entire organization.

Thus, the leader must be aware of what they’re emanating through their words and actions. They must ensure that they have a clear vision, bolstered by positive energy and inspiring language that rallies people around their vision and engages them into action.

Human systems are guided by behaviors, beliefs, actions, what’s said, and what’s unsaid. All of this equates to the energy of the human system, and energy is culture. So, what kind of culture is the leader of the company creating?

Cultivate the Leadership Team

The leadership team further breeds cultural attributes throughout the organization. Behaviors exhibited by this team tend to cascade down to each department. Leadership

Cross-functional teams are committed to the noble cause and vision for the organization and are coming up with ways to problem solve together to fulfill the vision.

4. Humanistic Leaders: Managers authentically care about their people. They are aware of what’s going on in their employees’ lives, what their goals are, and how they want to grow. When an employee knows to their core that their manager has their best interests at heart, difficult conversations to improve performance can take place. Mentorship, coaching, and caring for people comes with humanistic management, and it supports employees who grow and thrive.

Assess Environment and Employees

• How well do employees handle changes and challenges?

• Do employees feel the freedom and trust to share new ideas, take risks and have space to fail?

• Is there space to innovate and co-create?

• Are meetings motivating or just a list of to-do’s?

• Is everyone clear on what the noble cause is?

• Are systems in place for people to work effectively together?

• Is the leadership team dismantling anything getting in the way of employees taking ownership of tasks?

• If there’s a problem, are the employees the ones to solve it?

• Are people being given the autonomy they need?

• Are people held accountable to their agreements?

• Can you have difficult conversations in the workplace?

Achieving Resilience Through Emergent Culture

In times of uncertainty, organizations with the ability to adapt and pivot harness their power. Such resilience hinges on a shared commitment to the company’s purpose.

Leadership needs to exemplify responsibility, optimism, and collaborative problem-solving across departments to overcome obstacles and realize the company’s vision. This approach cultivates an emergent culture, capable of navigating challenges effectively.

While creating an emergent culture demands considerable dedication, care, and focus, the rewards are boundless. With a culture founded on change, management skills, response agility, and employee fulfillment, organizations can not only weather storms but also soar to new heights.
