Wyatt Earp: lawman & legend

The toughest town in the West …

Ed was part of this mission and was staying at Camp Huachuca (Wa-chu-ka). Wa-chu-ka).). During his stay, he would leave the camp to look Wa-chu-ka for rocks in the wilderness, even though his fellow soldiers at the camp warned him not to.

Wyatt Earp moved to Tombstone in 1879. The town was booming after the silver rush, and most of the Earp family lived there. Virgil, his brother, was working as the town sheriff, and Wyatt joined him.

The City of Tombstone in Arizona was founded in 1877 by Ed Schieffelin.. At the time, there was a scouting campaign against the Chiricahua (Chir-i-cow-uh) Chir-i-cow-uh)) Apaches. Chir-i-cow-uh

Wyatt Earp was a legendary frontiersman of the American West. In 1875, Earp joined the Dodge City police force. It was in Dodge City that Earp met Doc Holliday, a well-known gunslinger [good at shooting guns].

By 1881, a feud [argument]] had developed between the Earps and a gang led by Ike Clanton. The feud was settled during the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral.. In the gunfight, Virgil, Morgan, and Wyatt Earp joined Doc Holliday to face off against the Clanton gang. Morgan, Virgil, and Holliday were all wounded but survived, and Wyatt Earp escaped without injury.

They told him that he wouldn’t find stones out in the wilderness – only his own tombstone. Fortunately, for Ed, he did not find his tombstone, but he did find something: silver.

Wyatt Earp moved to California and died in Los Angeles on 13 January 1929.

Word quickly spread about his silver strike. By 1881, a silver rush had set in, bringing nearly 7,000 people to the area. Along with A tombstone the prospectors came outlaws and is a adventurers, among them were gravestone … Wyatt Earp and John H. ‘Doc’ Holliday.

30 shots in 30 seconds! On the cold afternoon of 26 October 1881, four men in long black coats strode down dusty Fremont Street. Around the corner, in an empty patch of ground behind the O.K. Corral, waited six cowboys. In 30 seconds, nearly 30 shots were fired at close range. The gun battle became a tale of legend … How the O. K. Corall got its name. The phrase ‘O.K.’ originated in the mid-1800s. Today, it is one of the most-used phrases in the world. Originally spelt with full stops, it is an abbreviation of orl korrect, a humorous form of all correct. John Montgomery used it to name his ‘O.K. Corral, Livery, and Feed Stable’ where the gunfight happened. We write it as OK or okay, but it is informal and should not be used in essays and other writing unless it’s dialogue someone is saying.

Doc Holliday: the dentist deputy John Henry ‘Doc’ Holliday earned his nickname when he graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery in 1872. Holliday was a good dentist, but playing cards and being an expert shot interested him more than teeth. Holliday was a loyal friend to Wyatt Earp and stood by him during the 1881 shootout at the O.K. Corral. Doc Holliday is one of the great legends of the Wild West; his life is an epic adventure that has been told and retold in literature and film. In 1887, Doc Holliday died in his bed from tuberculosis. He was 36 years old.

Tombstone, Arizona, has been called ‘the town too tough to die’. It is a town where history and modern facilities coexist. While keeping its Old West charm, it’s a fully functioning town with many shops, restaurants, and entertainment. Visitors can go back in time through gunfight re-enactments, museums and historic sites like the Tombstone Courthouse.

Visitors pull into town on dirt roads that lead to famous historic sites and shop windows that capture time. Actors in costumes from the 1800s mingle with tourists on wooden boardwalks and in saloons with creaky floors.

Find the O.K. Corral, where actors playing the Earps, Clantons, and Doc Holliday stage the most famous shootout in the Old West. Walk between shops that sell boots and antiques, plus Western art and souvenirs. One block over on Toughnut Street, Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park is a museum that preserves the town’s original sheriff’s office, jail, and courtrooms.

Take a ride on a stagecoach or go on a trolley tour that winds through the town and includes stops at Boothill Graveyard and other historic attractions. Some operators take visitors underground to tour the silver mines that put Tombstone on the map.

Or step into the 1880s at the Rose Tree Museum, where the world’s largest rose tree grows in the backyard and provides a cool and shady place to take a break during your visit to Tombstone. Listen to the description your facilitator will read to you.
