Activity 1: Listen to a short story 15 minutes

Read the following short story to the learners.

Kholeka’s family photo The class was quiet as Lwazi held up his photo and described his family. Kholeka wanted to listen to him talking about his family, but only one thought drummed through her head: “I don’t have a photo of Gogo and little Sipiwe. What am I going to say?” Lwazi finished speaking and the class clapped. Mrs Marocha pinned Lwazi’s photo on the wall under a heading: “MY FAMILY”. First thing every day, the Grade 4 teacher, Mrs Marocha, asked one learner to talk about their family and tomorrow would be Kholeka’s turn! Without a photo of Gogo and Sipiwe, what was she going to do? At break time Kholeka sat by herself. Her friend Famedhia asked, “What’s the matter, Kholeka?” “Nothing,” she answered. “Come and play,” said Famedhia. “We’ve made up this new skipping game.” “I just want to sit here a bit longer,” answered Kholeka, so Famedhia ran off the join the rest of her friends. Kholeka watched them. “I’ll be so embarrassed that I don’t have a photo of Gogo and little Sipiwe to show the class,” she thought miserably. “Everyone else has one.” Shortly before the end of break, her smiled brightened as she had a great idea! After break, Kholeka ran to class and quickly talked to Mrs Marocha who agreed with her unique idea. The next morning, Mrs Marocha called Kholeka to the front of the class to talk about her family. Kholeka stood up proud and tall and began, “I live with my gogo and my little brother, Sipiwe.” “And Kholeka has a special surprise for you,” smiled Mrs Marocha as she walked to the door and opened it. In walked Gogo with little Sipiwe strapped to her back. “I don’t have a photo, so I brought the real thing,” said Kholeka, introducing her gogo and Sipiwe. She described her family life at home with Gogo and her little brother, as Gogo smiled proudly at her granddaughter. The class loved it and clapped and clapped when Kholeka had finished. Kholeka had even drawn a picture of herself, Gogo and Sipiwe to put up on the “MY FAMILY” wall. That break she didn’t sit alone. She jumped and skipped happily with her friends.

Activity 2: Answer questions on the story 30 minutes

Read the story ‘Kholeka’s family photo’ to the learners a second time and then ask these questions about the story. Help learners understand that there is no right or wrong answer when they are asked to participate in a discussion or to give their opinion. All answers are correct as long as they can give valid reasons for them. We refer to this as ‘motivating your answer’.

What is the title of the story? The title of the story is ‘Kholeka’s family photo’. What is the setting of the story? The setting is a Grade 4 classroom. What is the teacher’s name? The teacher’s name is Mrs Marocha. Who does Kholeka live with? Kholeka lives with her gogo and her little brother, Sipiwe. Do you think Mrs Marocha is a nice teacher? Learners’ own opinions, but probably yes as she was happy to help Kholeka. Can you think of any reasons why Kholeka didn’t have a photo of Gogo and Sipiwe? Learners’ own answers. Suggested answers: a) They had only recently come to live with Gogo. b) Gogo doesn’t like photos. c) Gogo doesn’t own a camera.

Activity 3: Retell the story in the correct order 15 minutes

Learners must retell the story in the correct order.

Language lesson: determiners A determiner is a word that appears before any descriptive adjective and decides the kind of reference that a noun has; for example, ‘a’, ‘the’, ‘this’, ‘each’, ‘some’, ‘my’ and ‘your’. Encourage learners to use the determiners ‘first’, ‘then’ and ‘last’ as they retell the story.

Activity 4: Give a personal recount 15 minutes

Hints for presenting a speech • • • • • • • • • •

Engage with the audience. Make them feel you are glad they are there. Believe in yourself and speak with confidence. Speak clearly and do not rush. Use variation in your voice. Pause every now and then. Make eye contact with the audience. Use good body language. Stand up straight and do not slouch. Look interested. Avoid too many hand gestures. Enjoy yourself!

Go through the hints for presenting a speech with learners. Explain to them that they must give a recount of something that happened to them. Begin by recounting a personal experience you have had or use the recount given below. My brother and I went to lunch at my uncle’s house. He is always very funny and full of jokes. It was a hot day. First we had a swim, and then we had a braai with delicious boerewors. I had always been taught to have good manners so when it was time to go home I hugged my uncle and said, “Thank you for having us.” He looked at me in a funny way and said, “I didn’t have you; I had boerewors!”

Activity 5: Practise listening and speaking 1 hour

Repetition is an important part of learning a language; spend a few minutes each day on one of these activities. 1. Perform rhymes. Read the words of the rhyme in the study guide while doing the actions. Ask learners to say the words with you and copy your actions. Encourage learners to memorise the words and actions.

Families Some families are large (spread arms out wide) Some families are small (bring arms close together) But I love my family (cross arms over chest) best of all!

Music in our home Mother plays the violin. Daddy plays the flute. Big brother blows the horn, toot-toot-toot-toot. Little sister keeps the beat By clanging on a pot. And I try to sing along Whether I know the words or not. Ask learners whether they can add any lines to the rhyme. If anyone can, let them share the words with you or with the other learners. 2.

Respond physically to instructions. When we give instructions we use words such as ‘stop’, ‘go’, ‘look’, ‘sit’, ‘stand’

Ask learners to look at the picture in the study guide. Can they see the humour in it? The learner is being asked to stand on one leg and she is standing on one of her legs. Give simple instructions that are easily carried out; for example, ‘clap your hands’, ‘stamp your feet’, ‘touch your toes’. Ensure that instructions and clear and unambiguous. Play a version of the game ‘Simon says’ called ‘My sister Sooz says’. The game is played as follows: 1. 2.

Learners must stand. When you give an instruction starting with ‘My sister Sooz says’, the learners must follow your instruction. When you give an instruction without saying ‘My sister Sooz says’, the learners must not follow the instruction, but must stay in the position they are in. If a learner follows an instruction not preceded by ‘My sister Sooz says’, they are out of the game and must sit down. The last person standing is the winner.

Play a language game.

Ask learners to look at the picture in the study guide. Can they work out how the game is played? 1. 2. 3. 4.

Start the game by saying a word; for example, ‘tap’. Learners must then say a word that is associated to your word in some way; for example, ‘water’. The next learner then says another associated word; for example, ‘wet’. When no further associated words can be found, the last person who could not find the word starts with another word and the game continues. 21

READING AND VIEWING

Activity 6: Predict the story from the title and pictures 30 minutes

Ask learners to look at the title of the story ‘Our family picnic’ in the study guide. Can they tell you what they think the story will be about, based on the title? Use this as an opportunity for learners to tell you about their own family picnic. Tell learners to look at the pictures of the story and then share what they think the story will be about.

Activity 7: Use reading strategies 1 hour

Read the story aloud to learners. Once you have done this, ask learners to read the story aloud. If you have a group of learners, give them turns to read parts of the story aloud.

Our family picnic Last Sunday my family went to the Ipeleng Dam for a picnic. There were six of us: my mother, my father, my brother, Ezie, my grandpa, my gran and of course me. It was a hot day so Ezie and I put our swimming costumes on under our clothes so that we could swim in the dam when we arrived. My mom packed a picnic basket. She put a lot of food in the basket because Ezie is always hungry – my mom says it is because he is growing so fast. We all got into my dad’s car. It was a bit of a squash! We arrived at the dam and bundled out of the car. My dad put a waterproof blanket on the ground and my mom unpacked the food and drinks from the picnic basket. “Come, Lily, let’s swim!” shouted Ezie as we stripped off our clothes, rushed down to the water and jumped in. Mom, Dad, Grandpa and Gran came to watch us. We had a lot of fun splashing about in the dam until it was time for our picnic. We jumped out of the water and, dripping and laughing, raced back to our picnic spot. As we got closer, we heard Dad shouting, “Hey! Hey!” We all ran up to see who he was shouting at, and there, helping themselves to our picnic, were two monkeys! “Hey! Hey!” shouted Dad again, waving his arms wildly to chase them away. The monkeys shot off, but one of them had an apple in its hand. Luckily we had returned just in time because all that the monkeys got away with was one small apple and we still had plenty to eat!

If learners have difficulty with a word, start sounding the word for them so that they can try to finish the word on their own. Do not provide the word straight away, but do not allow them to struggle for too long. Once they have attempted the word and failed, let them copy you and encourage all attempts. This will help them gain confidence in their ability to read. Encourage learners to visualise the story as they read it. Ask learners to compare what they have read to what they predicted the story would be about from the title and pictures. Encourage them to identify in which ways the story is similar or dissimilar to what they predicted by asking questions such as: • Is this what you thought the story would be about when you saw the title and pictures? • In which ways is it the same as you imagined? • In which ways is it different from what you imagined? Language lesson: synonyms Use words from the story to talk about words that mean the same. These are called synonyms. An easy way to remember this is that same and synonym both start with the letter ‘s’.

Ask learners to try and think of synonyms for these words from the story: hot: warm, boiling fast: quickly, speedily plenty: lots, many

Activity 8: Answer questions about the story 30 minutes

Allow learners to read the story ‘Our family picnic’ with a partner. Each learner takes a turn to read the story to the other. Read the questions in the study guide to learners and allow them to answer orally. If there is any uncertainty about the answer, emphasise the importance of referring to the text. This answering session should be an informal learner activity in which you can take note of any learner who has not understood what they have read. If this is the case, go back over the story, reading one section at a time and then discussing it with the learner. Answer these questions orally.

Do you think 'Our family picnic' is a good title for the story? Can you think of another title? Learners’ own answers. Suggested answer: I think the title is good/bad. A good title could be ‘Monkeys at our picnic’.

Activity 9: Retell the story in sequence 1 hour

Learners work in pairs. Talk about the main characters in the story and then retell the story in the correct sequence. Listen as the learners tell each other the story, correcting them if they make a mistake by asking a question such as, “Are you sure that is what happened next? What about …” Language lesson: determiners Determiners are words that determine nouns and noun phrases. They decide the type of reference a word has. They are words such as ‘a’, ‘the’, ‘this’, ‘each’, ‘one’, ‘two’, ‘first’, ‘second’, ‘last’, etc. Encourage the use of these words when learners are telling the story in sequence.

Give learners the opportunity to express their feelings about the story. Let them use these questions in the study guide in their discussion. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Did you enjoy the story? Did you think it was a good story? Give a reason for your answer. Was the story too long or too short? Do you think the story was well written? Why or why not? Could the story have been told in a more exciting way? If so, how?

Motivating your answer Try to instil in learners the importance of having their own opinion and being able to give good reasons for why they hold such an opinion. This will encourage them to think for themselves and know that their opinion has value as long as they can substantiate it.

Activity 10: Discuss new vocabulary 30 minutes

Ask learners to skim through the story and find ten words that they don’t know how to spell. They then write these words in their exercise books. Encourage them to use the process in the study guide for learning to spell new words.

Hint: Learning to spell new words When you want to learn to spell a new word: Write it down. Concentrate on how the word is spelt as you write it. Look at the word you have written and spell it to yourself aloud or silently. Cover the word and try to rewrite it correctly. Check that you have spelt the word correctly. If not, see where you made the mistake and then write it again correctly.

Ten words If you would like to, choose the 10 words ahead of time that learners must learn to spell. In this way you will ensure that all learners are learning the same words. Suggested words are: Sunday, picnic, swimming, costume, squash, blanket, clothes, splashing, monkey, plenty

Activity 11: Use a dictionary to revise alphabetical order 30 minutes

Ensure learners have their own dictionary for this activity. Before they begin, revise the alphabet so that learners know it off by heart. Also ensure that learners know that there are 26 letters in the alphabet. This will help them to turn close to the correct place in the dictionary. Tell them that looking up words in the dictionary becomes quicker and easier with practise. Go through the hints on dictionary work in the study guide. Dictionary techniques 1. 2. 3.

Know the alphabet. All words are listed alphabetically. Look at the first letter of the word. Turn to the place in the dictionary where you think this word will appear judging by its place in the alphabet. Look at the second letter of the word. For instance, when you look at a word such as ‘author’, you first look at the words under ‘a’, you then look at the second letter as this will tell you where in the ‘a’ section this word will be found. If the first letters of words are the same, look at the second letter, and so on. Remember, the more you practise looking up words in the dictionary, the easier it will become.

Call out the words in the study guide and encourage learners to look them up in the dictionary as quickly as possible. Have a competition to see who can find the word first. Different dictionaries’ definitions may vary slightly. Here are a few possible definitions: Vocabulary in context pleasant: naughty: happy: enjoy: waterproof:

providing a feeling of happiness or satisfaction; enjoyable badly behaved feeling pleasure, satisfied find delight in something; take pleasure something that water cannot pass through; something that repels water

Ask learners to read out the meaning of each word from the dictionary. Explain to learners that some dictionaries give synonyms for words. If the learners’ dictionaries have synonyms then discuss these synonyms. Otherwise, ask learners whether they can think of synonyms for the words before going on to the next word.

Activity 12: Independent reading: retell the story 1 hour

Give learners a story to read from one of the books in your class. Hints for paired reading 1. 2. 3. 4.

Each learner should decide how much they will read. One page each is usually a good way to start. One learner starts to read while the other listens and follows in the book. If the reader makes a mistake, the other reader must give them the correct word. The second reader takes over once the first reader has read the first page. The advantages of paired reading are that a weaker reader will learn from a stronger reader. There is a limited amount of reading to be done so that the weaker reader will not become discouraged.

When learners have finished reading the story, give them the opportunity to retell the story in their own words. Encourage them to speak about how the story relates to their own life.

WRITING AND PRESENTING

Activity 13: Write your own ending to the story 30 minutes

Language lesson: sentence structure Revise the structure of a sentence with learners. Remind them to begin each sentence with a capital letter and end it with a full stop. Do a sample sentence for learners, such as: Suddenly he found himself unable to reach the edge of the dam. Reread the story ‘Our family picnic’, but stop reading when the children are splashing around in the water. Ask learners to think up another ending to the story. Discuss hints on brainstorming ideas.
