Activity 16: Everyone is special People who are blind Sometimes people are born blind or they are in an accident that causes them to go blind. If you are blind, it means you cannot see. But did you know that people who are blind can read? They use a type of writing made of bumps on paper, which they can feel and ‘read’. This writing is called ‘braille’.

Activity 17: Everyone is special Guide dogs People who are blind or visually impaired sometimes have a guide dog. These dogs become their ‘eyes’ and they lead their owner and make sure they do not bump into things. Different breeds of dogs are used as guide dogs, but Labradors and golden retrievers are the best. They are specially trained to help people walk around safely.

Activity 34: Seasons Animals that migrate As winter approaches, many animals travel to warmer places to get away from the cold. As soon as the weather warms up again, they return.

Some birds ¶y to warmer countries. They ¶y in ¶ocks in a V formation. The bird at the front does all the hard work of facing into the wind and creating a slipstream for the others. When the ±rst bird tires, it moves to the back of the formation.

Each year more than 1,5 million blue wildebeest migrate across the Serengeti (mostly in Tanzania and Kenya). They migrate to ±nd better grazing. Along with them go 200,000 zebras and other buck. This means they are exposed to many predators, like lions, on their long journey.

Activity 48: Animals that live in water Most shark species live in the sea. They are the hunters of the ocean and have ±ve rows of teeth! Although sharks sound dangerous, they are very important because they keep the ecosystem in balance. Some sharks do not hunt but only eat weak or dead ±sh. Sharks are classi±ed as ±sh, so they do not have lungs – they ‘breathe’ through their gills. Write the correct word in each block.
