Introduction for the facilitator Impaq’s approach to Life Skills in Grade 2 Life Skills play an important role in learners’ development. They learn how to interact socially, and they discover what they like and do not like, this helps to shape their personality. Physically and emotionally they are growing and exploring the world around them. The activities in the book have been developed to help them in these areas. Teaching Life Skills in Grade 2 requires learning opportunities, interaction, creativity and applying acquired knowledge. All of which help learners to better understand people and their surroundings. The subject is divided into four focus areas: • Beginning knowledge • Personal and social well-being • Creative arts • Physical education
Beginning knowledge The content and concepts of beginning knowledge comprise social and natural sciences, and technology. Here, learners get to know more about their environment, their individuality, and diversity. They investigate different aspects of the world around them and discover wonderful things. They learn how relationships work, how to be interactive and communicate effectively.
Personal and social well-being This is very important for young minds as they learn how to look after their body and keep it healthy. They begin to understand what healthy relationships and good values are. They learn how to make responsible decisions, taking themselves, the people around them and nature into consideration. It also touches on more sensitive topics such as abuse and violence. We want them to learn tolerance for other cultures and religions, and that people are all different.
Creative arts We focus on four different types of art: dance, drama, music and visual arts. This allows learners to discover the world around them using their imagination. In these sessions, learners must have the freedom to use their creativity. Give them the materials to make something without first showing them an example. Allow them to experiment – sometimes the process is more valuable than the result. For example, if they mix different paints to make new colours, but they end up with a muddy brown, accept it as part of the process. It is more about them learning which colours to mix than ending up with brown paint. Art is all about experimenting. Learners must use all their senses to explore their creativity. Keep criticism to the minimum and always make sure it is constructive.
Physical education In the Foundation Phase, developing learners’ fine and gross motor skills and their skills of observation

Facilitators are encouraged to do assessment throughout the year, not only in the indicated assessment sessions at the end of each term. Continued assessment will ensure learners obtain a fair mark for their skills. Facilitator’s guide This guide contains 20 learning units. Each learning unit is spread over two weeks and covers 10 days. Each day is divided into one or two sessions, which covers the different focus areas. Refer to the proposed daily programme for the time allocation of the sessions. Each session is concluded with two information boxes – Conceptualisation and Resources. The conceptualisation box summarises the concepts that are embedded, while the resources box provides a list of items provided and/or required for the session. і Æ
Indicates a provided resource. This includes the two workbooks, the learner aid and the posters (facilitator aid). Indicates a resource you must provide.
Two symbols are used in each session. The owl indicates what the facilitator must do.
The pencil indicates what the learner must do. Workbook 1: Terms 1 and 2 This workbook contains 54 activities covering: • Term 1: What we need to live, myself and others, everyone is special, healthy living, religious and other special days • Term 2: Seasons, farm animals, wild animals, aquatic animals, animal homes, religious and other special days Workbook 2: Terms 3 and 4 This workbook contains 56 activities covering: • Term 3: Soil, transport, road safety, people who help us, religious and other special days • Term 4: Our country, ways we communicate, life at night, religious and other special days The facilitator aid refers to posters to be used during the lessons: • Poster 1: What do we need to live? • Poster 2: Seasons • Poster 3: Farm animals • Poster 4: Wild animals • Poster 5: Aquatic animals • Poster 6: Burrowing animals • Poster 7: Modes of transport • Poster 8: Road safety • Poster 9: South Africa, our country • Poster 10: Nocturnal animals The learner aid The learner aid contains cut-out sheets required to complete the activities in the workbook or for some of the creative arts activities. Learning unit 1 Week 1
Learning unit Day 1
1 Week 1
Session 1: Topic discussion – What we need to live Have an informal discussion with the learners when you introduce a topic. Guide the discussion with questions and encourage them to talk about their own experiences. It is important to build on their existing knowledge to develop a complete picture of each topic. The topic table is used in this session. The learners participate by collecting items for the topic table. Have an informal discussion with the learners about what we need to live. Start by reading the poem. You can also teach it to them and do the movements in the poem, such as flexing muscles at the line ‘keep us strong’ or jumping in the air at ‘yay!’ in the last line.
Things we need every day Lizette van Niekerk
To live and breathe, run and play We need these four things every day: Some healthy food on our plate A lot of water to hydrate The sun helps to keep us strong And gives us energy all day long We lastly need to breathe clean air Living without these things is rare! Remember these four things each day To keep us all healthy, yay! Ask the learners these questions. You can add other relevant questions relating to healthy food. • What do we need to live? (Food, water, sunlight and fresh air) • One of the things we need is food, but not just any food – healthy food. What is healthy food? • What is unhealthy food? • Do you need sweets to live? • Why is it bad for you to eat too many sweets? • Which healthy foods do you enjoy? Look at the topic table with the learners.
•
Topic table (The topic table is used throughout the learning unit.) ‘What we need to live’ poster ◦ First ask the learners what they think we need to live; then look at the poster together.

•
Make sure they understand why we need these things (healthy food, water, fresh air and sunlight). ◦ Put the poster up in the front of the classroom/room. It should remain there for the whole week, until you move on to the next topic. Then move the poster to another wall and put up the new poster of the next topic in the front of the classroom. Place two A2 or A3 sheets of paper on the topic table, with the headings: ‘Healthy food’ and ‘Unhealthy food’. The learners cut pictures of healthy and unhealthy food out of magazines and paste them on the correct paper.
Session 2: Physical exercise At the start of every physical education session, the learners must play creative games that practise their skills. Ensure the learners’ muscles are warmed up before they participate in any activity. Creative games and skills: Inhale and exhale deeply with your arms above your head and then next to your sides. Lie on your back, take a deep breath in and hold it, then exhale slowly through your mouth. The learners play dodgeball. Rules 1. Make a large square on the grass in which all the learners may move around. 2. One learner stands outside the square with a soft ball. They must try to hit the other learners with the ball. 3. When the ball hits someone, the learner who was hit also stands outside the square and throws a ball at the other learners. 4. The game continues until there is only one learner left in the square. The last one in the square is the winner. If there are many learners, the game can be changed so that two learners are throwing a ball into the square at other learners. The learners who threw the ball first sit out of the game when they hit another learner with the ball, and the new learners then get a chance to throw the ball. If there are only one or two learners, family members must substitute as players. The game can also be changed so that only one learner is in the square for as long as possible before being hit with the ball by the facilitator.

Learning unit 1 Week 1
Day 2
Session 1: Topic discussion – What we need to live Eating from each food group in the food pyramid will give us enough vitamins and energy to grow, learn and play. Briefly discuss the five food groups. Can the learners remember what these groups are? • • • • •
Grains and grain products such as bread, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals, etc. Fruits and vegetables such as pears, bananas, apples, oranges, lettuce, cucumber, cauliflower, celery, etc. Dairy products such as butter, cheese, cream, milk, yoghurt, etc. Meat, fish, nuts and beans such as chicken, sausages, tuna, snoek, eggs, peanuts, etc. Fats, oils and sugars such as olive oil, chocolate, butter, sweets, etc. Complete activity 1 in workbook 1. The learners write down six types of healthy food.
Session 2: Creative arts The learners use the picture of the fruit basket in the learner aid. • •
They use any medium to draw fruit in the fruit basket. They must draw at least five different types of fruit. The learners also design their own type of fruit and draw it.
Day 3 Session 1: Topic discussion – What we need to live We have looked at one thing we need to live. Can the learners remember what it is? (Healthy food) Ask them to think about the poem ‘Things we need every day’. Can they remember the 15

other things we need to live? The next vital thing we need to live, is water. Guide the learners to this answer – for example, ask them what they want first after running far or playing outside for hours (a glass of ice-cold water). The human body consists of at least 60% water, and it is important to drink enough water every day to keep your body hydrated. You can also drink other liquids besides water, but fresh water is the healthiest way to stay hydrated. Ask the learners what other liquids we can drink. For example, cold drink, coffee, tea, milk; we get water from food such as meat, eggs, fruit, vegetables, etc. (Encourage the learners to drink water instead of cold drink.) Do the learners know what will happen if their bodies do not get enough water? If they cannot think of the answers, guide them with leading questions, for example: Have you ever played outside for a long time without having anything to drink? How did you feel? If there is not enough water in your body, you will begin to dehydrate: 1. You get thirsty and may start to feel dizzy. 2. You can get a headache, which may make you moody. You might also struggle to concentrate. 3. You continue to lose water through, e.g. sweating, urinating and defecating. 4. You begin to urinate less because your kidneys are trying to retain water. 5. The shortage of water thickens your blood. If you exercise or you get up to quickly you could faint. 6. Your body cannot regulate temperature, which can result in your body temperature dropping (or increasing, so you get a fever). 7. If you stay dehydrated for too long your organs could shut down and you could die. How much water should you drink every day? (The following are only guidelines. The amount of water each person should drink varies based on their own constitution and circumstances.) • • •
If you are between 5 and 8 years old, you must drink five glasses of water per day. If you are between 9 and 12 years old, you must drink seven glasses of water per day. If you are 13 years old or older, you must drink eight to 10 glasses of water per day.
Session 2: Physical exercise Creative games and skills: The learners lie on the ground or sit on a chair and rotate their ankles to ‘write’ their name in the air. They then rotate their wrists. The learners practise relay races. Rules 1. Divide the learners into teams of four. 2. Give each team a beanbag. 3. The learners in each team must stand 50 metres away from each other. 4. When you blow the whistle, the first learners in each team must start the race holding their beanbag. They must run as fast as they can to reach the second learner in their team, and hold the beanbag out as they get near to them. The second learner reaches out to grab the beanbag before running on to the third learner. The second learner does the same and hands

the beanbag to the third learner, who runs to the fourth. The fourth learner grabs the beanbag and runs to cross the finish line. The team whose fourth runner crosses the finish line first is the winner. If the learner has dropped the beanbag, the next team to cross the finish line with their beanbag is the winner.
Day 4 Session 1: Topic discussion – What we need to live We find water in many different places. Can the learners think of examples? (Rivers, dams, lakes, the sea.) The earth consists of about 70% water, but most of this is seawater. Have the learners tasted seawater? It is salty and we cannot drink it. There is fresh water on the earth, but of all the water, only 2,5 % of it is fresh, and some of this fresh water is frozen in the North Pole and South Pole. We only have access to about 1% of the earth’s fresh water, which is captured in dams and rivers. Because of this, water is considered a very scarce resource that must be used sparingly. Make sure the learners know we should not waste water. Ask the learners to think about how we use water every day – when we drink water, bath/shower, wash our hands, flush the toilet, when we swim, water the garden, give our pets and farm animals water, when we make food, etc. Complete activity 2 in workbook 1. The learners complete the sentences by writing the correct word on the line. 1. 2. 3. 4.
People and animals drink water. I use water to wash myself. I water the plants in the garden. We must not waste water.
Session 2: Creative arts Ask the learners why we wash our hands. (To kill germs.) What do the germs on our hands look like if we do not wash them off? The learners create ‘germs’ on paper using diluted paint and a straw. •
Make runny paint by adding water to it, or use food colouring and water. (There must be different colours.)

Give each learner a sheet of A4 paper. They suck up a little paint into the straw. They must only inhale a little and be careful not to get any paint in their mouths. They put the straw on the paper and blow. The paint should go in different directions. These splashes are the ‘germs’. The learners use different colours of paint to fill the paper with ‘germs’. They can also see what happens if they mix two colours. (They suck a little paint into the straw and blow it onto the paper, then suck up another colour and blow it onto the paper.) When the paint is dry, the learners can draw (or paste) eyes and a little mouth on the germs. Can they make each germ look different?

Day 5 Session 1: Topic discussion – What we need to live We use water every day. One of the things we need water for is to wash our hands. Teach learners the ‘Hand washing song’. Emphasise the importance of always washing your hands after using the toilet or playing outside.

Wash your hands every day, To keep the germs away. Scrub with soap and water, And be on your way. Complete activity 3 in workbook 1. The learners write the correct water source under each picture. Memorandum (in order of the pictures) • dam • windmill • well • river • fountain • borehole
Session 2: Improvise and interpret The learners pair up with a partner. They make up a short play about a child who did not want to wash their hands. Each learner must speak at least twice and they can use props to make the play more realistic. They should practise first and then perform their play for the class. If they struggle to come up with ideas, you can guide them.
Day 6
Week 2
Session 1: Topic discussion – What we need to live So far we have discussed two things we need to live – can the learners remember what they are? (Food and water) The next element we need to live is clean air. Can the learners guess how many litres of air we inhale in one minute? The average person inhales seven litres of air every minute. That is about 11,000 litres of air per day! Your body uses the oxygen in the air you breathe in, and you breathe out carbon dioxide. The air we breathe in is not clean – it is polluted by many things. (If something is polluted, it is dirty.) Can the learners think of examples of things that pollute the air? (For example, exhaust fumes from traffic, veld fires, factories, power stations, cigarettes, deforestation, spray cans, burning wood, coal, etc.) Ask the learners what they think we can do to reduce air pollution. They will do an activity on this later in the week. They can make any suggestions, even if they are not realistic. It is good for their reasoning ability to think of creative solutions.

Session 2: Physical exercise Creative games and skills: Sing traditional songs and keep the rhythm with your body by tapping your feet and clapping your hands. The learners play children’s games. Rules 1. Use shopping bags made of material to race against other learners. 2. Place a potato on a spoon. First hold it with your dominant hand and then your non-dominant hand as you race against other learners or walk over a simple obstacle course. 3. Do three-legged races: Two learners stand next to each other and tie their adjacent ankles together (the one learner’s right leg and the other’s left leg) with a piece of fabric or rope. The pairs of learners then race against each other. Each pair must work together to be able to run – first stepping with the ‘free’ leg and then their tied legs. The first pair to run across the finish line wins. 4. The learners then play tug of war.
Day 7
Session 1: Topic – What we need to live Complete activity 4 in workbook 1. The learners complete the sentences by writing the correct word on the line. Memorandum We must try to keep the air clean so we can breathe fresh air every day. Our lungs use the oxygen in the air, so we can live.
