Facilitator’s Guide Grade 1 ~ English First Additional Language

Graad 1, Fase 1: Prentkaarte Leerhulpmiddel Assessering (portefeuljeboek)

• • • • • • • • • •

Session 1: Listening and speaking: Who am I? • • • • • • • • • • • •

The facilitator asks the following questions. The learners listen and answer each question about themselves in English: What is your name? What is your surname (last name)? Where do you live? How old are you? When is your birthday? Are you a boy or a girl? What is your best friend’s name? How old is your friend? Where does your friend live? Your friend likes to visit and then you play together. What do you like to play when your friend visits? Have you ever been to your friend’s house? What do you do when you play at his/her house? The facilitator formulates additional questions based on the learners’ answers. The aim is to facilitate a discussion in English.

Start the session with the Body Rhyme. The facilitator recites the rhyme while the learners listen. Repeat the rhyme with the learners. Facilitate a discussion that requires the learners to name the different parts of the body. Emphasise the ‘names’ of the different body parts. Use the following guidelines to facilitate the discussion: • What helps you to walk around? (legs, knees and feet) • How many fingers and toes do you have? (The learners can count their fingers and toes) • What do you find between your shoulders and head? (neck) • Where is you elbow? • Use similar clues to move through the body and name all the parts of the body.

Session 2: Listening and speaking: My body The facilitator refers to the Body Rhyme. The learners recite the rhyme. The facilitator explains rhyming words. Use examples to demonstrate words that rhyme, e.g. boy and toy, hot and not, etc. Rhyming words sound similar when we listen to a rhyme. The learners recite the rhyme and identify the words that rhyme. (swings and rings, toes and goes, feet and sweet). Discuss each of the rhyming words, or make a sentence with each word. The learners have to understand the meaning of each word. They demonstrate the action that goes with the words, e.g. swing the body, nod the head, turn on the toes, etc.

• • • • •

Day 3 Session 1: Listening and speaking: My body The learners named all the body parts during a Home Language session earlier this week. Use the body chart in the learning aid and repeat the exercise. The learners name the parts of the body in English. As the learners name the parts of the body, the facilitator adds the flashcards to the body chart. This allows for incidental reading. The learners are not required to write or sound any of the words. They name the body part and see the word. The facilitator reads the name of each body part while the learners listen. They identify the first
