Activity 1: Beginning and end sounds Read the text and search for words with the sh and ch beginning and end sounds. Sort them into the correct groups. Shay is going on a cruise ship. It has always been her wish and now it’s her chance! The day in March arrives and she puts on a pretty shirt and her new shoes. As the ship leaves the harbour, Shay feels the fresh, chilly breeze and a splash of water as the engines turn. She looks over and sees some ±sh. She stays for hours to watch the sunset. That night, she has chicken and mash for supper. For dessert she has a piece of chocolate. There are so many fun activities to do on the ship. This is going to be a great trip! sh-

Lawrence’s balloon adventure - a true story

Lawrence Walters wanted to fly, but he would never be a pilot. His eyesight was not good enough. On 2 July 1982, he tied 42 helium balloons to a garden chair and flew across the Mojave Desert. He took his air rifle to shoot at the balloons if he flew too high. Lawrence also wore a parachute just in case. He climbed onto the chair and flew up to 4 900 m. At first, he didn’t want to shoot any of the balloons because he was afraid that he would become unbalanced and fall. After 45 minutes in the air, he shot a few balloons and slowly descended. He accidentally lost his air rifle and had to wait for the rest of the balloons to deflate before he could land. When he was almost on the ground, the balloons became tangled in power lines. Fortunately, Lawrence managed to escape without any injuries. Unfortunately, it was illegal to fly like this because he was interfering with the airport’s flight routes. When he landed he was arrested and fined $1 500.

Moira Mouse and the chickens Dot van der Westhuizen

Moira Mouse lives with her family in a hole in Farmer Wilson’s chicken house. Their home is cozy and covered in soft down feathers. Living there is also very convenient because every day the farmer’s wife feeds the chickens delicious fruit, vegetables, seeds and other treats. Everyone has enough to eat and they live happily together. There is only one big problem. His name is Hugo, the big black and red rooster. He doesn’t like the mice and refuses to share the chicken house. Every day he chases them across the yard, crowing at the top of his voice. Some days, Hugo chases Moira from dawn till dusk. The poor mouse can only collapse on her tiny bed at night, tired to the bone. Eventually Farmer Wilson sees what Hugo is doing and he moves the nasty rooster to his own pen. After that, Roger became the new rooster in charge and he was much friendlier. He welcomed Moira and her family and peace was restored in the chicken house. © Optimi
