n February 27, 1997, some news were made public and surprised all the world. Some scientists announced in the Nature magazine the birth of the sheep Dolly by a cloning procedure, a disconcerting asexual reproduction that it was inconceivable until that day. The appearance of Dolly caused different reactions and awakened dreams and nightmares, which –at the same time– revived old myths. The authors of the experiment were the Scotch scientists Jan Wilmut and K. H. S. Campbell with the help of collaborators of the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh. Five years later, in 2002, other news broke: a company called Clonaid had cloned a human being and the man had become “creator”. Although those news have not been proved yet, the news stirred international controversy, as well as a moral and ethical debate. Since then, scientists and many media have tried to “convince” the world about the benefits of cloning human beings and claim that it is the answer the man needs for eternal life, as well as the solution to cure many diseases and even resurrect the beloved or, in the future, oneself. Faced with this scenario, we need to be informed, as Christians, about everything that happens around us and that concerns society; above all, we must assume a biblical, conscious and rational position on the issue and we must be able to maintain a firm and correct stance in the light of the Bible. We must also determine that the Bible is not and never will be an antiquated or old-fashioned book, because we can find some information about cloning in it, since it contains the elements that every true child of God needs to have perfect knowledge. THE ORIGINS OF CLONING Progress in knowledge and subsequent technical advances in the field of molecular biology, genetics and artificial fertilization have given rise, for some time now, to experimentation and cloning in plants and animals. Since the 50s, in the zootechnical field there have been experiments in producing identical specimens, obtained by a method called artificial twin excision, a procedure that is not necessarily defined as cloning.

This practice spread in experimental barns and stimulated a multiple production of selected specimens. The first cloning in the animal world took place in 1952. It was made from the egg of a frog by scientists of the University of Pennsylvania, USA, who after this success cloned mice. In 1991, in Taiwan, Wu Ming-Che of the Livestock Research Institute, cloned five pigs of an endangered species, but the clones had only 90% of similarity. In 1993, Jerry Hall and Robert Stilmann of the George Washington University, reported information concerning experiments –carried out by them– on human embryos. These experiments were conducted without the prior consent of the

competent ethics committee and were published to widen the ethical debate, said both authors. It was not until the news of the birth of the sheep ‘Dolly’, four years later, that the possibility of cloning itself emerged. Thus, in appearance, the way to human cloning –understood as the replication of one or more individuals identical to the donor– opened up. Before Jan Wilmut and K. H. S. Campbell, scientists believed it was impossible to make a reproduction from a specialized cell, such as a liver cell, skin cell or kidney cell, but only from embryonic cells (egg or sperm).

There are no moral objections to animal cloning. This practice, besides improving the reproduction of livestock, cheapens the cost of certain meat and could eventually be used to save endangered species. However, there is a serious question about this practice, which includes animals: it is unknown whether reproductive cloning can bring dangerous genetic malformations, and if they could be the source of new diseases and malformations in animals and humans. AGAINST THE LAWS OF GOD Unfortunately, men in general, especially scientists, discovered new techniques over

COVER NOTE

WHAT IS CLONING? T IS A SCIENTIFIC procedure that involves taking the genetic material of an organism to obtain an identical one, which is called clone. In cloning the egg and the sperm do not join. Cloning means to obtain an individual from a cell or a nucleus of another individual. After the discovery of Wilmut, it is said that it is possible to produce a living being almost identical to the original one from any cell of the body of a deceased being. Even if this person has died long ago, provided that the cell is maintained under suitable freezing conditions. This technique was used for the cloning of Dolly, as a core was frozen in liquid nitrogen before it was introduced into an enucleated egg. Dolly was born on July 5, 1996. The word “clone” comes from the Greek term Klon, which meant sprouts and is now used to describe any organism generated asexually (without fertilization) and whose genetic information comes from a single parent.

the years that have awakened the desire to change or go against the laws of God. One of these desires is to put an end to the law of death and think about the possibility of having eternal life by his own means, which –in light of the Scripture– is impossible. In addition, he wants to become a creator to “create” a perfect race. In short, these are the purposes of cloning. In the event that cloning extends to the human species, it is necessary to note that this replica would not necessarily have the same identity of the person, which includes ontological and psychological aspects. The spiritual soul, essence of each individual belonging to the human species, is

created directly by God and cannot be engendered by parents or produced through artificial fertilization or cloning. Furthermore, psychological development, culture and environment always lead to different personalities. It is well known that among twins, resemblance does not mean identity. The popular imagination and the aura of omnipotence that emerges from cloning have no basis in this aspect. Despite the impossibility of involving the spirit, source of personality, the projection of cloning the man has led to imagine scenarios inspired by the desire for omnipotence: replicate individuals gifted

with ingenuity and exceptional beauty, reproduce the image of deceased relatives, choose healthy individuals who are also immune to genetic diseases, enable sex selection, produce embryos previously selected and frozen to be subsequently transferred to a uterus as bodies reserve, among other aspects. According to the Bible, the laws of God are unbreakable. Ecclesiastes 3:14 notes very clearly: “I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be forever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.”

Cloning seeks to create “perfect” human beings, but the Word tells us that only God is perfect. If we sum up the problem of cloning, we would have to say the following: a) Cloning is modifying the natural process of the beginning of life b) It is killing hundreds of human beings in the process of birth c) It will turn women into less than a means to achieve and objective, since it attempts to market their eggs d) Sooner or later, it will affect the destroyed image of the family e) It will cause tremendous emotional

and physiological consequences in cloned beings. We need to understand that God established laws of nature from the beginning of the creation of the world and these laws have existed since the creation of the world. It is stated in Ecclesiastes 3: 1: “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” Moreover, Ecclesiastes 3:2 says: “A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted.” Thus, this new process of science should be taken with a grain of salt because it violates the laws of God l June 2016 / Impacto evangelistic

Cloning

Cloning is a scientific procedure whose objective is to obtain an identical individual to the one that has donated the cell. Cloning makes a perfect copy of the physiological and biochemical aspects of the cell to create an individual with the same characteristics. Cloning is possible by using an artificial reproduction process, in which the necessary genes are put in the cell. Questi geni determinano le caratteristiche del nuovo individuo, a differenza di quanto accade nella riproduzione sessuale, in cui l'individuo è il risultato di un processo di fertilizzazione e contributo genetico di una cellula della madre e una cellula del padre.

VACCINES (I) Immunization (vaccination) is one of the most powerful and effective health interventions that humanity has developed. It is the greatest technological advance of humankind and one of the main factors that has helped to achieve high levels of quality and life expectancy in the world. Walter Menchola Vásquez (*)

accination prevents diseases, disabilities and deaths from preventable diseases such as cervical cancer, diphtheria, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, whooping cough, pneumonia, polio, rotavirus diarrhea, rubella and tetanus. For instance, vaccination programs prevent between 2 and 3 million deaths from diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough and measles every year. However, it is estimated that 21.8 million newborns in the world do not receive basic vaccinations. Regarding vaccines, E. Richard Moxon states, “Apart from the provision of clean water, vaccines have had a more profound effect on world health, espeMISSIONARY MOVEMENT 18 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

cially of children, than any other public health measure.” The history of vaccination dates back to centuries ago, when the Chinese practiced variolation. It consisted in immunizing an individual against smallpox with material taken from a patient or a recently variolated individual; variolous pustules were subjected to a process in order to reduce virulence. However, they were unsuccessful in that attempt. In 1768, Edward Jenner, English physician, was a student intrigued by a country-lore that said that people who caught cowpox from their cows could not catch smallpox. After many years of

research, on May 14, 1796, he inoculated eight-year-old James Phipps with matter taken from a pustule of Sarah Nelmes, a milkmaid suffering from cowpox. In order to check the effectiveness of vaccination, Jenner inoculated him later with smallpox, but Phipps never got sick. Ten years later, vaccination had spread throughout the world. E. Jenner’s work gave rise to the word “vaccine,” which comes from the Latin “vacca” (cow) and from which “vaccinate” and “vaccination” derive. To realize the importance of the invention, we must remember that only in the twentieth century smallpox was responsible for about 500 million deaths worldwide. In 1885, nearly one hundred years later, Louis Pasteur proved that diseases could be prevented by infecting people with weakened germs. He successfully used a vaccine to prevent rabies in the child Joseph Meister, who had been bitten by a dog with the disease. Years later, Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin achieved the greatest advance in immunization with the development of inactivated (1952) and oral (1957) polio vaccines, respectively. Vaccines are considered the most successful invention of modern medicine: thanks to them, polio was officially

eradicated in the Western Hemisphere in 1991, and cases of diphtheria mumps, rubella, measles and tetanus decreased radically. If the trend continues, many of the diseases that for millennia have plagued humanity will be completely eradicated in the coming years. Vaccines have been obtained against many diseases, such as tuberculosis (1909), yellow fever (1935), influenza, Rickettsia (1938). It is possible to develop them against most biological pathogens; however, it takes years and highly complex technology to isolate their components and know which of these is capable of generating immunity without harming people. Furthermore, it should be considered that many of these pathogens are able to mutate (change) their biological composition from time to time, hindering further development and application; for example, the flu virus has more than one hundred varieties of strains and they can mutate regularly. What is a vaccine? It is a biological preparation that provides active acquired immunity to a specific disease. It contains a harmful germ, either attenuated (inactive) or dead, or one of its components. How does it work? The vaccine simulates the first germ attack, but without

Over 100 million children are vaccinated each year: more than in any other stage of history. In addition, more and more vaccines are developed to protect adolescents and adults against diseases that endanger life, such as influenza, meningitis and cancers that occur in adulthood.

risk to the person, who will develop defenses (immunity) when the attack actually occurs. In this way, the immune system will be properly trained to recognize and destroy harmful germs. There are different types of vaccines. When an attenuated pathogen is used, they are called “live attenuated vaccines;” they provide lasting and strong antibody and cellular immunity, but present some risks. Other vaccines use dead pathogens; they have the advantage of being completely safe for people, but are less effective in developing immunity and require adjuvants to enhance the immune response in people. Technological progress has allowed to develop vaccines from the components of pathogens (called “subunit vaccines”). In 1981, Blumberg and Prince prepared the first of the kind against hepatitis B. These vaccines have significant advantages when compared to others, in terms of safety for people and immunological results (defense against pathogens). A variable of this technique are recombinant vaccines, which use genetic technology (genes) and are obtained from nonhuman organisms (bacteria) to develop particles similar to those of bacteria to foster immunity in people.

The first recombinant vaccine (hepatitis B) was created in 1986; it is much safer, since there is no possibility of contamination. Today, scientists are working on vaccines produced with naked DNA. Over 100 million children are vaccinated each year: more than in any other stage of history. In addition, more and more vaccines are developed to protect adolescents and adults against diseases that endanger life, such as influenza, meningitis and cancers that occur in adulthood. Despite progress, great efforts are still to be made to reach the 24 million children, mainly in developing countries, that have no access to vaccines (WHO). Although achievements are impressive, new and improved vaccines are urgently needed to reduce the unacceptable burden of morbidity and mortality from diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis, among others. How much does it cost to vaccinate a child? In the 80s, the overall average was 3.50 to 5 dollars; in 2000, it reached 6 dollars. The cost is likely to increase in the coming years, as the immunization schedule (shots a child receives by type of disease) will also increase due to new diseases. Modern technologies will also allow for safer, better-quality and lower-cost vaccines. It is estimated that by 2010 the cost will reach 18 dollars per child and will probably rise to 30 dollars; however, these figures are still extremely low in relation to what it means to develop a disease, financially speaking. What happens when people are not vaccinated? The consequences are serious, not only for those involved but also for their community. For example, in 1975, in Japan, the population rejected the pertussis vaccine for its alleged adverse effects; the result was that, while there had been only 361 cases in 1973, there were 135,105 in 1978. Vaccines prevent more than 2.5 million child deaths each year and have an impact on the health of a community and humanity itself. They save not only lives, but also costs. Even the most expensive vaccines are a profitable investment when it comes to health l

THE POWER OF THE WORD All aspects of our lives are marked by the power of words.

W

ords are decisive in relationships. For instance, depending on their content and intent, words determine the relationship between husband and wife. Harsh and thoughtless words can damage and even destroy a marriage, but emotional and warm words strengthen it. Likewise, the words a child hears at home leave a mark, whether beneficial or harmful, on their personal development. The book of Proverbs attaches great importance to words in everyday life; the passage where this importance seems more evident is, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” The great realities of our existence, such as life and death, rely on words. An example of the devastating power of words is Saul’s servant Doeg. He was there when David, who was fleeing from Saul, came to seek help from the priest. Doeg’s snitching on who helped David led to a massacre of innocent people. In contrast, words can also save; Esther’s words interceding for her people before Ahasuerus helped spare the Jews, who

were doomed to extermination. These two examples show that Proverbs’ passage about the enormous power of words proves true. They can have either destructive or saving power. Now, for words to do their job, whether beneficial or harmful, there needs to be someone who receives and believes them. So the question arises: What are the words worthy of belief? The Bible, the same book that contains Proverbs 18:21, does not waver in the answer to that crucial question. When it all started, the future of men was indissolubly associated with the words spoken to them. They were true

words, as they came from a true source worthy of belief. The words that God gave Adam were, “Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” They were lifesaving words for man to abide in the state of bliss in which he was created. If he had obeyed, everything would have gone well. However, besides these words came others from a different source. They were conflicting words that denied those said earlier. They promised great things, but their credibility was not proven, unlike the first. Only when man believed, he proved, although late, that they were misleading words. That was how the biggest fraud ever caused the catastrophe that the words worthy of belief had warned against. Adam’s became the prototype and foretaste of the cases to come after him. His action, as head of the human race, affected the rest of his offspring, which invariably followed the sinister path he had opened. However, regardless of the paths chosen by humans, the evidence remains the same as at the beginning: there are words worthy of belief. Some passage says, “The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.” The comparison to dross-free, purified silver serves to show the true quality of God’s words, which are unlike men’s words, unlike those words that come from spurious sources. After the huge failure at the beginning of time, God gives us his Word again, so that we embrace it and are rescued from the abyss that we are trapped in. That Word is for life and comes through Jesus Christ, who said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” Your damnation or salvation depend on words; the words you believe. So it is essential that you make sure you believe in those ridding you of damnation and giving you salvation l

The book of Proverbs attaches great importance to words in everyday life; the passage where this importance seems more evident is, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”

CHISELED BY THE MASTER’S HAND Written by Pastor Erwin Lutzer, this book is an effective tool to become aware of earthly tribulations and challenges. It also helps to feel the Lord’s hand influencing the heart of every Christian.

P

eter gives an excellent example of how the Lord molds a life: it is first like raw material that then becomes a finished product. The Lord uses some training techniques, like motivation, reprimand, public training, and private reflection. There is joy and sadness, success and failure. Jesus interacted more frequently with Peter than with any other Apostle. Conversion is instant, but Peter’s character refinement continued throughout his life. This is but the sculpting work of a soul. Published for the first time in 1993, the book “Chiseled by the master’s hand” belongs to the Life-in-Perspective series, written by Canadian Erwin Lutzer. It is a detailed work that allows the Lord’s followers to understand earthly challenges and tribulations from a Christian point of view through the experiences of some of the most important biblical characters, such as King David, the apostle Peter or the prophet Moses. It also let us see the Lord’s modeling hand. Jesus knew that sculpting someone’s soul is an individual process; every person must experience pain and then answer to the perfecting tool. People chosen by Christ would represent Him performing his work. Like Rabbis, He knew that his most significant ministry would not be

directed to crowds, but to individuals enlightened by their own fire. These people would follow him learning his doctrine and practical lifestyle. Furthermore, they would bring the torch to their generation, and then to the world. Jesus, as a creative master, used these common experiences to teach unusual lessons. In the introduction to his book, Lutzer, a notable evangelical Pastor with more than 45 years of ministerial work, asserts directly that Christ can find endless possibilities in each of His followers. Similarly, this Lord’s servant, author of “How to Say No to a Stubborn Habit,” “Satan’s Evangelistic Strategy for this New Age,” and “Living with Your Passions,” explains that the Lord is a divine sculptor that does his job every day in the heart of each Christian. Keys that open doors can also close them. Those who repent can be admitted, but those who do not may be excluded. this tough fisherman into an outstanding preacher of his Word, we learn how the Lord encourages us to change and how we can learn important lessons from our past mistakes and sins. Missionaries are not the only ones studying faith. Most of us experienced strategic circumstances during which we were forced to believe in God. In general terms, faith cannot develop in comfortable situations; it can only flourish when experiencing difficulties. Faith only grows when we have a strong need to believe. Unfortu-

nately, only desperate people believe. Satan says: “Follow me and you will become rich.” But Jesus does not promise wealth in this life, but in the next one. If we leave something here to follow Him, we will be rewarded 100 times more. Focused on the turning power of God, Lutzer’s book analyzes thoroughly how the Lord intentionally puts believers in difficult situations to develop their faith. Similarly, the book affirms that Jesus rules over every detail of the existence of a Christian. About this, Pastor Lutzer states that God placed

eternity in the heart of every person and that He is the only one that can confer dignity through his divine grace. God enjoyed encouraging Peter’s faith and purifying his devotion and love. This was another grace in the process of molding a man of God. Peter should learn, like all of us, that our biggest need is not financial, social, or even health-related. Our biggest need is faith, that is trusting that Jesus will satisfy all our necessities. Our biggest need is to understand the unique and particular alliance that we have

MORAL VALUES This book, which is divided in twelve chapters, highlights the image of Peter, the fisherman. According to reverend Erwin Lutzer, he had a great influence that endures nowadays and that only Heaven will reveal the whole impact of his faithfulness to the Lord. The determination of Jesus’ most renowned disciple is so highly praised by the author that he even states that Christians throughout history have been positively influenced by his life, testimony and writings. The world is a filthy place, spiritually speaking. The movies that we watch on TV, dishonesty prevailing in business and the general abandonment of moral values become influences that put at risk many believers’ convictions. Current temptations faced by younger generations are historically unmatched. But the true enemy is not outside, but within us. We born with a natural tendency towards earthly interests. Dark inner desires are only receptive to external stimuli. In the epilogue of his book, Pastor Lutzer –Master of Theology from the Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS)– states that only faith, hope, love and a merciful character will pass from this life to the other. With more than thirty books published, Lutzer –gold medalist of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) and one of the most renowned religious authors worldwide– remembers us that God always invites us to his table, but that we must have our hands and feet clean. If we want to have the mark of God in our actions, we can only do one valid and weighty thing: We must put our lives in his hands! Only He can take our actions and perpetuate it. God placed eternity in the heart of every man. We intuitively look for a purpose to perform our actions, hoping that it will endure the test of time after our departure. Besides our relationship with the Lord, there is nothing else that would have such an impact. Only the Creator can give us dignity and just by His grace we can perpetuate it l

GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS The hymn speaks of the mercy of God and His faithfulness to humanity. It was written by composer Thomas Obadiah Chisholm and quickly became popular in the American Christian community.

W

ritten in 1923 in the US city of Baldwin, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” is a very particular gospel song, classified by experts as a fervent prayer. It was written by evangelical composer Thomas Obadiah Chisholm, born on July 29, 1866, set to music by Rev. William H. Runyan, member of the Moody Bible Institute, and performed and popularized in the fifties by the renowned singer George Beverly Shea. Published by the Hope Publishing Company, the hymn by Chisholm has a unique history. The poem was written to praise the Lord’s faithfulness, and sent to musician Runyan so that he could create the appropriate melody. Then, promoted by Rev. William Henry Houghton, president of Moody Bible Institute, it became popular within the Christian community of the United States and reached worldwide fame through Shea’s voice. In the view of hymnologist Kenneth Osbeck, author of several books on gospel music, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” is bases on Lamentations 3: 22-23, which speaks of the mercy of the Lord and His faithfulness to humanity. This song is also included in countless hymnals and tacitly states that every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning (James 1:17). Chisholm, who became a follower of Jesus Christ at the age of 27, wrote his most famous composition guided by God in order to have on hand words that could strengthen and serve as a balm in his times of greatest uncertainty. created, while in his daily work and based on the Scriptures, a poem highlighting words such as compassion, love, mercy, peace, strength and hope. Raised in a log house, Thomas Obadiah Chisholm was the author of over two hundred gospel hymns throughout his 93 years. Patient and generous servant of the Lord, Chisholm’s extensive work for the cause of God was spread by many religious media, such as Sunday School Times, Moody Monthly and Alliance Weekly. He also served as editor of the Pentecostal Herald in Louisville and became pastor of the Methodist movement for one year. “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” not only speaks of the confidence that the Lord gives to His people, but also leads us to remember Chisholm, who never stopped sharing the good news through his compositions. The prolific man who served the Lord for over 66 years died on February 29, 1960, in New Jersey, after a long life of more than nine decades l

EVAN FROM WALES In 1904, a young believer led a revival that shook the world. His name was Evan Roberts. His statement, “We can do nothing without the Holy Spirit”, marked his life and encouraged Christianity in Wales. Roberts Liardon

E

van John Roberts was born June 8, 1878, into the staunch CalvinistMethodist home of Henry and Hannah Roberts. I believe a “revivalist spirit” was built immediately within him. Evan’s parents had a strong influence in cultivating that spirit and nature within him. His nature was one of excellency and sensitivity. The family was known for their love of God’s Word and hard work. Each family member, no matter how young, had his own well-worn Bible. Evan’s strong character was the result of his family’s training. While still very young, Evan’s father was injured in a mining accident. So his father took Evan out of school to help him in the coal mines. Evan never complained. Soon, Evan had developed the family’s habit of memorizing Scripture. He was never seen without his Bible. It has been said that he would even hide his Bible in the clefts of the mine while he worked. One day, a huge fire burned through everything in its path, except young Evan’s Bible. Only the pages were scorched, so he continued to carry it every day and memorize Scriptures from it. Each morning, Evan stood at the opening of the mine to give a particular Scripture to each of the passing workers for their workday meditation. As these hard-working men passed by the coalcovered boy, they had no idea of how God would use him to change their nation. MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 30 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

A DIFFERENT YOUNG MAN Evan was dramatically different from the rest of the boys his age. He never took part in sports, amusements or coarse joking. He worked in the mines every day, then came home and walked a mile to his church, Moriah Chapel. At thirteen years of age, Evan experienced his first encounter with God. It was then that Evan vowed to commit himself even further to the work of the Lord. One simple yet profound phrase spoken from the pulpit of Moriah Chapel changed Evan’s life. The phrase, “What would Jesus do?” became his obsession. While others of his age group became interested in dating, Evan was more likely to be inside the church discussing Scripture with other men. Soon, the elders of the church

gave him the responsibility of starting a weekly debate group for young men like himself. But these happy times ended abruptly when the mine Evan worked in suffered an explosion. The single men were the first to be relieved of their duties. So in 1898, Evan began work in Mountain Ash, a town north of where he lived. He left home not realizing the spiritual preparation he had gained. At that time, few people understood the power of prayer. Most attended church as a moral commitment, instead of a spiritual one. But not Evan. Because of his unique desire for the Lord, Evan gave himself to fervent prayer and intercession. So much so, that by the time he was twenty years old, he

was known by some as a “mystical lunatic.” Stories about him circulated widely. It was also said that he meditated in the Word so long that he often missed the evening meal. Though people did not understand Evan’s methods, the spiritual power he portrayed was unmistakable. On one occasion, he travelled to Builith Wells for a prayer meeting at which he was called on to pray. The people’s hearts were melted within them at the power exhibited in Evan’s prayer. After the service, the minister approached Evan and advised him to consider full-time ministry. SERVANT OF GOD Evan considered it and answered the call.

Through his church, he was required to preach twice at all twelve affiliate churches, and his sermons were met with great approval. He confided to a friend that his heavenly secret was, “Ask and it shall be given unto you. Practice entire, definite faith in God’s promise of the Spirit.” Soon afterward, he got so caught up in the Lord that his bed shook. Then after that, he was awakened every night at 1:00 a.m. to be “taken up into divine fellowship.” He would pray for four hours, fall back to sleep at 5:00 a.m. for another four hours, then pray from 9:00 a.m. until 12 noon.” In December of 1903, Evan knew in his heart that God had planned a great revival for the Welsh community. While preaching at Moriah he said, “I have reached out my hand and touched the flame. I am burning and waiting for a sign.” For Evan Roberts, 1904 was a year of great struggle. His closest friend, Sidney Evans, attended a prayer meeting and came back very excited. He told Evan of how he had fully surrendered his life to the work of the Lord. But Evan reacted strangely. Fearing he wouldn’t be able to receive the fullness of the Spirit of God, he went into a deep depression, a pattern he became known for throughout his ministry. He was so consumed with this thought that no one could soothe him. Then in September, Evan’s friends persuaded him to go with them to hear the rugged evangelist, Seth Joshua. Unknown to Evan, Rev. Joshua had prayed for years that God would raise up another “Elisha” from an ordinary person and “mantle him with power.” And Joshua got exactly what he prayed for. When mighty revival came through the leadership of Evan Roberts, the great, dignified preachers of England and Wales were forced to sit at the feet of crude, hardworking miners to see the wonderful works of God. WALES’ REVIVAL Evan remained silent throughout Joshua’s service. But when the minister began to pray, “Bend us! Bend us!” Evan’s soul stirred within him. After the meeting, the group went to Joshua’s house for breakfast, but Evan refused to eat. He was extremely tense and solemn. He was afraid the Holy Spirit

would come to him and that he would not accept Him. Evan left the company of his friends and went back to the chapel where Rev. Joshua held his meeting. While there, he began to respond to Joshua’s earlier prayer by crying out to the Lord, “Bend me! Bend me!” In this prayer of total submission, he received a revelation of the love of God. Evan surrendered to the will of God that day and allowed His compassion to fill him. Evan had been fervently praying for one hundred thousand souls to be added to the kingdom of God, and he received this rare vision as a direct answer to his prayers. Now he was even more determined to launch his ministry. He was ready to give all his time and money to the work before him. His statement, “We can do nothing without the Holy Spirit,” set the precedence for the rest of Evan’s ministry. Evan finally obtained approval to begin a small series of meetings. What began on October 31 as a small church meeting quickly grew into a major revival and lasted for two weeks! The group began with a few consecrated believers who listened intently to Evan’s message. Instead of standing behind the pulpit, the young revivalist walked up and down the aisles, preaching and asking questions to those sitting in the pews. Soon, the services grew to a fervor, and Evan sent word to the Bible college to request more workers. Strong moves of intercession flooded the room during each service, and many times the services would go past midnight. Once, Evan prayed all night with a congregation and did not return home until the next morning. This small group of intercessors led by the young evangelist transformed the entire community. In two years, all of Wales would know the name of Evan Roberts. Nevertheless, during the peak of the revival, Evan Roberts experienced in 1906 a great physical and emotional collapse that forced him to abandon public life. He sheltered in prayers, devoted himself to read the Bible and lived an existence with no exposure. He was buried in the family plot behind Moriah Chapel, in the north of Wales, on January 29, 1951, being 72 years old. Some years later, a memorial column was built in front of Moriah, commemorating his efforts to spread the Gospel l

n the mid-90s, Francisco was walking the streets of Barcelona, Spain, in search of pleasure and fun. His debauchery took him to all kinds of clubs where, besides doing the most dangerous drugs of the moment, he met dozens of women that became his one-night-stand. No one could reform him, until the message “Jesus loves you” took him out of his self-destruction. LIFE IN DRUGS Francisco became addicted at the age of 17, when his friends in the neighborhood of La Mina encouraged him to smoke hashish. He got such a euphoric feeling that he lost control before their eyes. Everything was allowed for first-timers like him, they said. Over time, Francisco and his friends stopped sneaking out to smoke and began to do it openly in parks and squares; they did not care what other people would think. He moved on from hashish to cocaine and synthetic drugs like LSD, becoming deranged and very volatile. Francisco seemed to have forgotten that two of his brothers had died of drug overdose. “Drugs became part of my daily life in such a way that I could only feel well when I used them. That is when I started having problems with my mother, she and I would fight all the time,” he re-

calls. Francisco lost all control and his life seemed to fade away into thin air like smoke. His addiction took him to different clubs in Barcelona, including gay ones. There, besides using new drugs such as crystal meth and liquid ecstasy, he met many young addicts with whom he had sex. He also knew about ketamine, a drug also known for its anesthetic properties in horses. “There I could see all kinds of gay, lesbian and bisexual behavior. Sodomy and perversion to the full. I used to go to dance and be with women,” he says. THREE DEATHS Francisco Gomez Ardanaz was born on August 1, 1977, in the city of Barcelona. His parents were Juan Gomez and Pilar Ardanaz; they were a middle-class family, but over time, their resources became scarce due to the poverty, crime and vices that surrounded the neighborhood of San Adrian del Besos, where Francisco grew up. Due to their lack of opportunities, two of his seven older brothers, Juan and Ricardo, went astray to drugs and gangsterism and were imprisoned. As a result, his father became deeply depressed and embraced alcohol and violence towards his wife and children. A few years later, in 1985, his father passed; not long after,

The Gomez Ardanaz family could not catch a break. “That was a very hard blow to me and my family, especially my mother; she had to bury two children and a husband in one year and a half,” he tells. After the tragedy, 14-year-old Francisco promised himself not to end up like his father and brothers. However, he began to have more freedom in and out his house, with no res-

Once, he and several of his friends burst into a bar and stole about 800 euros from the slots. “I was in a downward spiral of failure after failure; I felt happy only when I got high, and the only way to get money was selling drugs,” he says. JESUS LOVES YOU Although his life was ruined by debauchery and drugs, his promise was still there. At the age of 25, Francisco though his future was clouded by uncertainty, without imagining that a “Jesus loves you” could change his life. In April 2003, he was smoking hashish in his neighborhood, when a young man known, recently converted to the gospel, approached him and greeted him with that phrase; Francisco was stumped. He thought that the young Christian was mentally disturbed for talking that way. But he changed his mind, as the young man started talking about his life and introduced Jesus Christ to him as the only one who could change him. “God wants to turn you into a new man. God wants you free from all evil bondage and wants to give you back joy, peace and hope of a new life,” said the young believer. After inviting him to the house of the Lord, he gave him a New Testament. “I carried it with me everywhere, because I fell in love with the person of Jesus Christ ... I remember that I would finish eating and lock myself in my room to read the Word of God, even while smoking hashish. This I did without the knowledge of fear of God,” he says. THE APOCALYPSE After several weeks, still without surrendering to the Lord, Francisco had strange and disturbing dreams showing the latest moments of the human race on earth described in the book of Revelation. “In the first dream, I could see that my neighborhood was all completely plunged into darkness and chaos. “GOD CONTINUES TO OPEN DOORS” Colombia prays for the spreading of the Word of the Lord through radio stations in several provincial capitals. Rev. Joaquin Enrique Parra Cartagena, National Supervisor, shares the vision and progress of the Work.

O

ver a year after being appointed Supervisor of Colombia, Rev. Joaquin Enrique Parra Cartagena talks to Impacto Evangelistic about the work done in the South American country that sends more missionaries to the world. How long have you been a Supervisor? Under God’s guidance, we have been working since January 2015. It has been a little over a year and God continues to bless his Work. All who make up the National Board are working very hard. It is God who is doing things and we, by His grace and mercy, are only instruments that he uses for the Work to go ahead. What goals have you set so far? The work performed by the previous Supervisor Rev. Humberto Henao and the former supervisors has been excellent in every sense of the word. The National Board and I are following in their steps under the Lord’s direction. How is this work done? We are working so that within each congregation and presbytery there is involvement in the training of workers and pastors, because, as the gospel is preached, God continues to open doors and places to preach His Word. For this reason, people called by God are needed to fulfill the task. That is

one of the goals we want to achieve, and we are sure it is God’s desire as well. What is the vision of the Colombian people? According to God’s vision, we are to purchase properties for our temples. We are also praying to the Lord for radio stations in several provincial capitals and a television channel to link up with Bethel Television. It is a great inspiration for us, because it carries the message to all parts of the world. How much has the Work grown in Colombia in recent years? When it comes to numbers, Colombia has grown very much. Throughout the history of the Work of the Worldwide Missionary Movement, there have been many factors causing the numerical growth of souls in Colombia. This is seen in the congregation, which wants to preach to more lost souls. What can you tell us about the programs of evangelization? There is a program of evangelization inspired by God that several pastors have committed to carry out: preaching in houses, parks, buses. We also want to hold campaigns in stadiums, because that is a way to reach people and introduce our Lord Jesus Christ as Savior l

DEVOTIONAL

HOW EXCELLENT IS GOD! “O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” Psalm 8:9. Rev. Luis M. Ortiz

D

avid was a conspicuous observer of creation, as well as a deep worshiper of the Creator. He said, “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained. What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him” (Psalm 8:3-4). And then in a great cry of gratitude and sincere worship, he said, “O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:9). Excellent indeed is our Lord! • God is abundant in love. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). His love is so great that He sacrificed His own Son for our salvation. Paul said, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). John said, “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God” (1 John 3:1). • God is abundant in goodness. In Exodus 34: 6, God proclaims himself as abundant in goodness. He cannot be otherwise, as He made his sun to rise on the just and on the unjust (Matthew 5:45). • God is abundant in mercy. The Bible says, “Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin” (Exodus 34:7). Psalm 136 talks about the greatness, mercy and goodness of God by ending each verse with: “For his mercy endureth for ever.” • God is abundant in glory. Psalm 138:5 says, “For great is the glory of the Lord.” The world has seen great manifestations of the glory of God. For example, the cloud of the glory of God that led the people of Israel in the desert and then settled over the tabernacle; or the flame of his glory burning in the Most Holy Place. The prophets saw some of God’s glory, and Isaiah claimed, “The whole

earth is full of his glory” (Isaiah 6:3). However, the greatest demonstration of the glory of God is the incarnation of His beloved Son. John said, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). • God is abundant in power. Job 37:23 says, “Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power...” He is the creator of everything. Jeremiah 32:17-18 says, “Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee… the Great, the Mighty God, the Lord of hosts, is his name.” • God is abundant in faithfulness. Lamentations 3:23 says, “Great is thy faithfulness.” He is great in His faithfulness. He is faithful to His word. “There shall fall unto the earth nothing of the word of the Lord” (2 Kings 10:10). Heaven and earth will pass away, but His Word will not (Matthew 24:26). Even if we believe not, he abides faithful, he cannot deny himself (2 Timothy 2:13). My friends, if we reject the greatness of His love, His goodness, His mercy, His glory, His power, His faithfulness, we will have to face the greatness of His anger. Jeremiah 36:7 says, “For great is the anger and the fury that the Lord hath pronounced.” • God is abundant in righteousness. The Bible says that He will not clear the guilty and the sinner (Exodus 34: 7). Those who do not take refuge in the greatness of His love will suffer the the greatness of His righteousness and His anger. My friend, if you do not want to suffer the eternal strength of the anger of God for your sin, you better now accept the greatness of the love of God and all He has done for you. Accept Jesus Christ as your great Savior. Amen l

HAVE WE FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT? “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears. And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables… and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord shall give me…” 2 Timothy 4:3-10. Rev. Peter was thinking about earthly wellbeing and comfort, and he mistakenly tried to convince the Lord not to go forward, but to take another path and evade suffering and death. But the Lord was explicit and said that we must set our eyes on the things from above, on God.

he Bible tells us about those who one day took the Lord’s way and seemed to be on the right track but did not make it to the end. They got off to a good start, but unfortunately had a sad ending. This is why we are always told to set our eyes on the Lord and not on perishable things. Once, the Lord admonished the apostle Peter; he had tried to persuade Him to have mercy upon Himself and to not go to Jerusalem, as he knew that He would die there. The Lord said, “Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men” (Matthew 16:23). Peter was thinking about earthly wellbeing and comfort, and he mistakenly tried to convince the Lord not to go forward, but to take another path and evade suffering and death. But the Lord was explicit and said that we must set our eyes on the things from above, on God. The Lord said, “Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Mark 8:34). “No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62). In one of his letters, the apostle Paul writes in sadness, not because he was going to be killed, but because he was abandoned by many. Here, in particular, he names Demas, who had been his collaborator, his assistant, his fellow soldier and had worked alongside faithful men of God. Paul said, “For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world…” (2 Timothy 4:10). The apostle John says, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world” (1 John 2:15). He who loves the world cannot remain forever; as the Bible says, “And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever” (1 John 2:17). The apostle Paul is a good example of per-

severance, faithfulness, determination; he dared to say, “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). He also said, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God… but what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ” (Galatians 2:20; Philippians 3:7-9). He realized that he had been following only a religion. Let us remember that a sky glow came upon him and fell on the floor, and he told God, “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” (Acts 9:6). Paul said, “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:” (2 Timothy 4:6-7). That is why he also said, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?… nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:35-39). When you fight against the powers of hell, against the world and the flesh, this is the battle we have to fight; we must not fight for the world or against the sound doctrine. Then he said, “Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing” (2 Timothy 4:8). Paul was not the only one; there were many who did not give up; who did not care about what came against them; who were able to abide until the end, honoring God and His Word l

WHERE ARE THOSE WHO DEFEND THE WORK OF GOD? “For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them” Acts 20:29-30. Rev. Álvaro Garavito

T Wicked men who are infiltrated, false teachers who reach the world’s masses through powerful television channels and many radio stations, who transmit their venom and strangle the world, the people, the sinners. For that reason, those who rise up to defend the inheritance of God and the Work that the Lord has placed in their hands are needed.

he passage above speaks of Paul’s departure from the church at Miletus – a city of Asia Minor. He left after three years of work, after teaching the Word day and night in the temple and in the houses. He said goodbye in tears and told them that “they will never see his face” (v. 26). He was not only saying goodbye to the city, but also to this world. He said, For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them” (v. 29-30). “Shall grievous wolves enter in among you…” (v. 29). The Word “grievous” is defined as the “person inclined to theft and robbery.” Paul was speaking as inspired by the Holy Spirit of Satan’s purpose. He was warning them that Satan would infiltrate grievous wolves into the people; they were instruments of evil within the people of the Lord. “For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you… Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them” (v. 29-30). It is terrible to read, listen and confirm that history have not denied that among the people of God there are those who have not spared the flock. They are the enemy infiltrated into the nascent Church; evil people and leaders who lurk and wait for the right moment to make their appearance or be expelled by the Lord. There have always been false prophets and false teachers among the people of God. The apostle Peter tells us in his second epistle, “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying

the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not” (2 Peter 2:1-3). Within the people of Israel and Judah there were thousands of false prophets, instruments that Satan had infiltrated into the Church to destroy it. We talk about wicked men who are infiltrated, false teachers who reach the world’s masses through powerful television channels and radio stations; they spit their venom and strangle the world, the people, the sinners. For that reason, those who stand up for the inheritance of God and the Work that the Lord has placed in their hands are needed. The Lord says, “But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.” (John 10:12-13). The hireling is there just for the

money, not for the call of God. When such false pastors and evangelists see the wolf of worldliness, the wolf of idolatry or the wolf of corruption coming, they run away or crouch, they turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to it. The true shepherd of the flock rises and grasp the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. The true shepherd defends the flock and does not allow the grievous wolf to

enter. Grievous wolves, false prophets and false teachers may not enter; the pulpits will not be yielded to anyone. We are now at a moment when many do not endure sound doctrine. The Word of God says, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables (2 Timothy 4:3-4).
