THE HIDDEN FACE OF THE INTERNET Most common users ignore that the Internet is like an iceberg of which they only can see the visible part. There is a big part that is hidden or submerged, which is known as ‘deep web’ or ‘invisible web.’ Those almost unknown web pages represent about 95 percent of the Internet.

ew people talk about the deep web, and even fewer know what it is about. Many think that everything can be found on the public net thanks to Google, and some even say that, “if you can’t find it on Google, it doesn’t exist.” The truth is they are wrong. Hundreds of millions of users see the “nice side” of the Internet every day, but the dark side of the net of nets is beyond what they can see, or better said, beyond what most people know. Some experts illustrate the Internet as a huge iceberg; everybody sees its top, but its biggest part is submerged and can only be seen by those who know how to browse with special tools. Consequently, the Internet is not only what we know, but also what we do not know about it. There is a lot of information that we cannot find on regular browsers and that usually remains hidden from the ordinary public. There is much useful information, but it is also full of danger to be avoided no matter what. The deep web is not small, but just the opposite. In year 2000, it represented 45 times the information on the surface web, although that number has obviously changed nowadays because of the growth of phenomena such as social networks, blogs and even Google. Today, Google, the world’s most famous search engine, is a giant that brings to light much more material than it used to in 2000, so those numbers are not updated. Nevertheless, it is true that the deep web still occupies an enormous space on the Internet that remains hidden. In 2010, it was estimated that the information on the deep web was about 7 500 terabytes, which is equivalent to 550 thousand millions of individual documents approximately, and that there were more than 200 000 websites. Estimations based on the extrapolation of a study from the University of California, in Berkeley, speculate that the deep web must now have about 91 000 terabytes and that it is 500 times bigger than the surface web. The deep web consists of all those webpages that search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc., cannot find. This is possible as many websites or documents are designed to remain hidden from those en-

main inspiration. WHAT DOES IT CONTAIN? What does the deep web contain? What can be found there and why its creators do not want the information to be easy to find? A big part of the information on the deep web are databases that their creators want to keep away from search engines. Although the use of the deep web is not exclusively illegal, there is a great presence of illegality. David Sancho, threat research-

er at Trend Micro, states that the deep web is out of control. Experts give several pieces of information that raise suspicion about the impact of illegal activities on this kind of web pages. It is believed that 32% of the goods merchandized on several online stores have a connection with cannabis and drug dealing. There are even opportunities to break the law. For 5 900 dollars, the American citizenship can be obtained in a deep web site specialized in providing passports.

Many users –inform the experts– take advantage of the web circumstances to do money laundering, buy and sell passwords, sell illegal passports or leak government information, as it happened with the famous Wikileaks. etc., may also be found there. Taking into account the characteristics of the deep web, there is also information on criminal activities such as drug dealing, pornography, pedophilia, selling and manufacture of guns, etc. This information is a serious danger for users. It should be pointed out that the deep web is invaded with hackers who attack users by surprise and cause terrible damage that may even Continue reading––

destroy the hard disk or infect it with unknown viruses. LAYERS OF THE INTERNET It is said that the Internet is divided into seven layers. Below the general characteristics and contents of each layer: Layer 0: The one that everybody knows and where there are webpages that can be found by search engines such as Google, Yahoo and others.

MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 12 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

Layer 1: It contains little-known websites that people can access rather easily. They say that they are mostly forums and small independent websites with not so usual contents. Layer 2: In this layer, there are even less known websites. The material that can be obtained here has doubtful morality. Layer 3: It contains darker and more dangerous websites. There is weird, disturbing and useless content like websites

COVER

Layer 6: Only those who have great knowledge about informatics have access to this layer. All the encryption changes constantly and the access passwords are so long that are almost impossible to decode. Layer 7: In this layer, everything is black and full of binary codes. The contents are unknown, but they are supposed to include secrets guarded zealously for several decades. Very few people in the world have access to this layer.

abandoned for years. Layer 4: From this layer down, real hackers abound. It contains encrypted governmental pages, laws to be approved and state secrets about scientific experiments from the last four decades. Layer 5: The most hidden military secrets are here. In this layer, absolutely confidential information and other highly reserved topics are exchanged. Some people refer to this layer as ‘Marianas Web.’

ALWAYS ON THE ALERT Fortunately, this kind of websites constitute a low percentage of the deep web, but it is important to be on the alert in order to avoid at all costs the access of underage children to this information. The access of a minor to the deep web is not usual, because it is difficult to set up the computer in order to surf, or better said, “dive” in this hidden part of the Internet. All the existing material on the deep web is not easily accessible, since it is necessary to use a proxy server. In order to browse the deep web correctly, it is necessary to have an advanced knowledge in informatics, much advanced than usual, therefore it is unlikely that a child may have access to it. However, it may awaken interest in teenagers who would like to enter the hidden world. In this case, it is very important to talk to them and warn them about the dangers of these websites. Teens interested in getting in the deep web are likely to do it behind their parent’s or teacher’s back. However, if they are used to using responsibly the ICT (information and communication technology), they will be safe while diving in that hidden part of the Internet. In that sense, education and awareness on the possible risks of the Internet is fundamental. It will not hurt to talk to them about the deep web, if necessary. Like pretty much everything, the deep web can be useful in many cases, as it contains a great quantity of interesting information that is impossible to find in the surface web. Before getting into this hidden web, however, it is essential to know the lines that no one should ever cross and how to react before dangerous situations l

WHAT IS THE DEEP WEB?

When using any of the search engines, we only catch information from the surface of the WORLD WIDE WEB. The Deep Web is an Internet space hidden from the usual search engines and where you can find all kinds of content, almost all illegal.

To produce results, most search engines roam the web. These engines follow links to index sites.

EUROPA MUST GO BACK TO GOD German Chancellor Angela Merkel is the daughter of a pastor and has never hidden her faith. In a recent conference at the University of Bern, Switzerland, she was asked about the “danger” that Muslim immigrants represent for Europe and her answer took many by surprise.

G

erman Chancellor Angela Merkel took everyone by surprise by saying: “Please go to church every once in a while, or become a tad more versed in the Bible.” She said that Europeans needed to deal again with their roots and reconnect with God and the Bible to overcome the current crisis of immigration, which has religious contours. “European Christians must be brave, know their faith better, have unshakable biblical foundations and attend church once in a while”, she stated. In addition, she said that people should not be afraid or hostile towards the refugees, clearly referring to some “defensive” reactions that she has observed in her country. “Cultures that are marked by fear will not conquer their future. Fear has never been a good advisor”, she stated according to the publication of Evangelical Focus. She made these statements during an interview at the University of Bern, Switzerland, when she was asked about the danger of the Islamization of Europe, after the arrival of thousands of Syrian refugees. As it has been widely informed, Germany is the main destination of thousands of refugees who escape from wars in the Middle East and Africa. “Islamic terror in unfortunately a phenomenon operating predominantly in Syria…, we can’t just sit here and say this is a phenomenon that has nothing to do with us, because those are people, sometimes very young people, who grew up in our countries,” she added.

MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 16 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

Merkel declared that Europe must solve the refugee crisis with equality and solidarity, and that Germany is willing to accept more asylum-seekers than its partners, given its size and strong economy. The German Chancellor spoke about the Christian identity that helped forge the European values. “I have to be very honest. We all have the opportunity and freedom to have our religion, to practice it, and to believe in it. I would like to see more people who have the courage to say ‘I am a Christian believer’. And more people who have the courage to enter into a dialogue”, Merkel said. She also urged those people who have withdrawn from their faith to attend church now and then and develop biblical foundations. The German government is deeply involved in finding a solution to the refugee crisis. However, the German chancellor wanted to let people know that there is no reason to be afraid of Islam. She made an appeal for dialogue and stated that we must “deal again with our roots and know them better”. Germany hosted over 800 thousand refugees in 2015, four times the number of refugees in 2014. The government says that it could take in until 500 thousand refugees per year in the following years. In the several campaigns against the inclusion of all foreign refugees into the country, the main argument is that many jihadists and soldiers of extremist groups are arriving disguised as immigrants l

MEAT CONSUMPTION A report from the World Health Organization took the world by surprise not so long ago. It was about the consumption of red and processed meat and their relation to cancer. These two products may seem similar, but they are actually quite different. Walter Menchola Vásquez (*)

MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 18 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

L

et us begin with some basic concepts to understand what this is all about. What is red meat? It is meat obtained from mammals, including cows, calves, pigs, lambs, goats and others, which is used for human consumption because of its great contribution of high-quality animal proteins and iron. It is named after its red color, which is characteristic of myoglobin. This kind of meat also has a high cholesterol content. White meat, however, does not come from mammals, but poultry, and has high protein content and low fat content. What is processed meat? It refers to meat that has been transformed by humans through different processes: salting,

prepare lists of carcinogenic, autogenous and teratogenic substances. The IARC classifies substances in three big groups: Group 1 are carcinogenic to humans; Group 2 are probably carcinogenic, and it subdivides in 2A highly carcinogenic and 2B possibly carcinogenic to humans; and Group 3 are not carcinogenic.

curing, fermentation, smoking, or other processes to enhance flavor or improve preservation. Most processed meats contain pork or beef, for example: sausages, ham, bacon, jerked beef, corned beef, canned meat, meat-based sauces, etc. Determining that a substance is carcinogenic for human being involves significant difficulties, given that many factors intervene in the onset of cancer as well as in the development of the natural history of this illness. Nowadays, there are tests that help determining if a substance is carcinogenic or not. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Economic Community

WHO’S RESEARCH On Monday, October 26, 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) – the most important health agency of the United Nations – announced through the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) that consumption of processed meat “may” cause cancer to human beings, which means that it is carcinogenic like tobacco and other products that probably cause cancer. In addition, it was stated that red meat could also be carcinogenic. This news took the entire world by surprise, as these kind of products are highly consumed by big part of the world population. The research was based on a thorough review of the accumulated scientific literature, with more than 800 different studies on cancer done by 22 scientists from 10 countries who were convened by the IARC. After analyzing and finding evidence, they classified red meats as probably carcinogenic for humans (Group 2A). This association was observed mainly for colorectal cancer, but association were also seen for pancreatic cancer and prostate cancer. It should be pointed out that this classification is based on limited evidence, which means that it comes from epidemiological studies and not experimental ones, since it is forbidden to make experiments on humans. It also should be noted that other explanations cannot be dismissed. Nevertheless, a positive relation between the consumption of red meats and the development of colorectal cancer has been found. In the case of processed meat, however, the study concludes that it is carcinogenic for humans (Group 1), and that its consumption causes colorectal cancer (IARC) when eaten frequently and in high amounts. The category implies that there is enough evidence of carcinogenicity, which means that there are convincing evidence that the agent causes cancer. However, these results should be treated with caution, as it points out the evidence but not the direct relation to cancer. A positive relation to colorectal cancer was found. THE RISKS The risk of suffering from cancer depends on the quantity and frequency of processed meat consumption. A data analysis from 10 studies estimates that every 50 grams of processed meat eaten daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by about 18 % (IARC). What does it mean? If I eat 50 grams of processed meat once in my life, will I develop cancer? No, the study does not say that. It says that if you eat more than 50 grams of any processed meat frequently for many years and you are genetically predisposed, you will probably develop colorectal cancer (18 %). The risk of cancer in case of red meat consumption is more difficult to estimate, because the evidence showing that red meat causes cancer is not as solid as in the case of processed meat. In the case of processed meat, everything indicates that something negative occurs during the transformation process of meat, which generates carcinogenic chemical substances, such as NOC (N-nitroso compound) or PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon). Cooking at high temperatures or with food in direct contact with flames or hot surfaces, as in barbecuing or pan-frying, would produce more of certain types of carcinogenic chemicals. The Global Burden of Disease estimates that around 34 thousand deaths from cancer per year are caused by diets with high amounts of processed meat, while a million deaths in the world are due to the cancer produced by tobacco, 600 thousand are due to alcohol consumption, and more than 200 thousand are due to air pollution. The World Health Organization points out that the main causes of death between 2000 and 2012 were ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular accident (stroke, brain hemorrhage), chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), lower respiratory

MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 20 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

infections, lung cancer, AIDS, diarrhea, diabetes mellitus, car accidents and hypertension. To sum up, non-communicable diseases, also known as chronic diseases – especially, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes mellitus and COPD – are responsible for almost 70% of deaths worldwide. According to WHO, 14 million of new cancer cases were reported in 2012. Among men, the five most common type of cancer were lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach and liver cancer; while among women the most frequent were breast, colorectal, lung, cervical and stomach cancer. The most common risk factors (30 %) were high body mass index (overweight or obese people), low intake of vegetables and fruits, little physical activity, and tobacco or alcohol consumption. It is expected that the number of cancer cases around the world will double in the next years. It should be noted that what was revealed is the “risk” or probability of a person suffering from cancer due to processed meat consumption. These risks are expressed in a relative way (percentages, rates) and not in an absolute way (numbers: 450, etc.). WHO has stated that if a person eats 50 grams or more of processed meat, they have 18 % more risk (relative number) of suffering from colorectal cancer. For this reason, each country should establish the absolute risk according to the number of cases of colorectal cancer. The percentage does not mean that there is a direct relation between the intake of processed meat and colorectal cancer, but it only means that the risk is 0.18 times higher, if 1 represented the probability of developing colorectal cancer. It is recommended to consume processed meat moderately and not so frequently. Regarding red meat consumption, although there is no evident relation to cancer, it is related to other diseases, such as ischemic heart disease, which is the first cause of death in the world. That is why it is advisable to restrict its frequent intake, eat white meat instead, or cook it avoiding barbecue grill and fried food. Remember the old saying: “Poison is in everything, and no thing is without poison. The dosage makes it either a poison or a remedy” l

REALIDAD FACTS

THE OUR FATHER OF DAVID BOWIE What we believe or say at some point in our lives is one thing, but coming face to face with death is another. That changes it all. Jaime Fernández

verybody was surprised. The hundreds of millions of people who were watching the concert on TV could not believe what they were hearing. By the end of his performance at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert (the singer of Queen who died from AIDS), David Bowie said the Lord’s Prayer. Practically everyone at the stadium repeated each word with him. Later, David explained that his reaction was instinctive and that those were the first words that crossed his mind when thinking about his friend’s death. Many times the need of God appears in the hardest moments, and we all turn to Him when death comes. It does not matter if we are atheistic, agnostic, Buddhist or practice transcendental meditation or some other thing, because when we do not know where to go, we all end up searching for God. It is as if there was something written inside of us saying that God is there, that He listens to us and that He is the only one who can help us. What we believe or say at some point in our lives is one thing, but coming face to face with death is another. That changes it all. Did you know that some people even get bothered when others talk about their Creator? I remember that in the Oscars 2005, all nominees received a letter in which they were asked not to mention God… If we make God “disappear” from our existence, there will come the time when we will not know what to do, when nothing will help or satisfy us. We will feel completely alone and eternity will be a burden too heavy to support by ourselves. The most interesting thing of all is

that, in spite of people’s attempts and the media’s efforts, God is still there. In fact, more and more people look for Him every day, more and more people know that He is there and He is the only one that can make real sense of life. That is exactly what will happen in the future. God announced it thousands of years ago: “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord” l

FACTS THAT YOU DID NOT KNOW ABOUT CHARLES SPURGEON January 31, 2016 marks the 124th anniversary of the death of great preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon. In his memory, we bring some facts that you may not know about him. • One woman was converted through reading a single page of one of Spurgeon’s sermons wrapped around some butter she had bought. • Spurgeon read The Pilgrim’s Progress at age 6 and went on to read it over 100 times. • The New Park Street Pulpit and The Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit, the collected sermons of Spurgeon during his ministry with that congregation, fill 63 volumes. The sermons’ 20–25 million words are equivalent to the 27 volumes

REALIDAD FACTS

of the ninth edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. The series stands as the largest set of books by a single author in the history of Christianity. • Spurgeon’s mother had 17 children, nine of whom died in infancy. • When Charles Spurgeon was only 10 years old, a visiting missionary, Richard Knill, said that the young Spurgeon would one day preach the gospel to thousands and would preach in Rowland Hill’s chapel, the largest Dissenting church in London. His words were fulfilled. • Spurgeon’s personal library contained 12,000 volumes—1,000 printed before 1700. (The library, 5,103 volumes at the time of its auction, is now housed at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri.) • Before he was 20, Spurgeon had preached over 600 times. • Spurgeon drew to his services Prime Minister W. E. Gladstone, members of the royal family, Members of Parliament as well as author John Ruskin, Florence Nightingale, and General James Garfield, later president of the United States. • Spurgeon typically read 6 books per week and could remember what he had read—and where—even years later. • Spurgeon once addressed an audience of 23,654 without a microphone or any mechanical amplification. • Spurgeon began a pastors’ college that trained nearly 900 students during his lifetime—and it continues today. • In 1865, Spurgeon’s sermons sold 25,000 copies every week. They were translated into more than 20 languages. • At least 3 of Spurgeon’s works (including the multi-volume Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit series) have sold more than 1,000,000 copies. One of these, All of Grace, was the first book ever published by Moody Press (formerly the Bible Institute Colportage Association) and is still its all-time bestseller. • During his lifetime, Spurgeon is estimated to have preached to 10,000,000 people. • Spurgeon once said he counted 8 sets of thoughts that passed through his mind at

the same time while he was preaching. • Testing the acoustics in the vast Agricultural Hall, Spurgeon shouted, “Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world.” A worker high in the rafters of the building heard this and became converted to Christ as a result. • Susannah Thompson, Spurgeon’s wife, became an invalid at age 33 and could seldom attend her husband’s services after that. • Spurgeon insisted that his congregation’s new building, the Metropolitan Tabernacle, employ Greek architecture because the New Testament was written in Greek. This one decision has greatly influenced subsequent church architecture throughout the world. • For an average sermon, Spurgeon took no more than one page of notes into the pulpit, yet he spoke at a rate of 140 words per minute for 40 minutes. • The only time that Spurgeon wore clerical garb was when he visited Geneva and preached in Calvin’s pulpit. • Spurgeon met often with Hudson Taylor, the well-known missionary to China, and with George Müller, the orphanage founder. • Spurgeon had two children—twin sons—and both became preachers. Thomas succeeded his father as pastor of the Tabernacle, and Charles, Jr., took charge of the orphanage his father had founded. • Spurgeon’s wife, Susannah, called him Tirshatha (a title used of the Judean governor under the Persian empire), meaning “Your Excellency.” • Spurgeon often worked 18 hours a day. Famous explorer and missionary David Livingstone once asked him, “How do you manage to do two men’s work in a single day?” Spurgeon replied, “You have forgotten that there are two of us.” • Occasionally Spurgeon asked members of his congregation not to attend the next Sunday’s service, so that newcomers might find a seat. During one 1879 service, the regular congregation left so that newcomers waiting outside might get in; the building immediately filled again l

JOSEPHUS,

THE ESSENTIAL WRITINGS Paul Maier’s book summarizes the history of the Jews. It sheds light on the Old and New Testament.

T

In its second part, Maier’s book addresses in eight chapters the most essential part of another of Josephus’ works: “The Jewish Wars.” Printed in Greek between years 77 and 78, this book, written originally in Aramaic, takes us to the events that took place between the Maccabees rebellion and the last Roman military actions in Judea.

hose who write histories are prompted by various motives. This work was undertaken not to display literary skill, win fame, or please the powerful, but, as a participant in some of the events, I intended to refute those whose writings were falsifying the truth and to benefit those ignorant of important affairs. This narrative will cover our entire ancient history: the origin of Jews, the fortunes that overtook them, the great Lawgiver who taught them piety and virtue, and all their wars through long ages before their final conflict with Rome. The main appeal of “Josephus, the Essential Writings” is the great amount of information on the biblical times and on the most noted Jews mentioned in the Holy Scriptures. Written by Dr. Paul L. Maier, renowned Christian historian, this book is a complete translation of the basic texts of Flavius Josephus, distinguished Jewish Pharisee chronicler who contributed with his books to revealing the initial stages in the history of Israel. After the death of Joseph and his brothers, the Israelites, as their descendants were now called, flourished in Egypt. Meanwhile, the Egyptians, forgetful of the benefits they had received from Joseph, began to envy the prosperity and happiness of the children of Israel. The kingdom had passed to another dynasty, and they became very cruel to the Israelites, forcing them to cut numerous canals from the river, build walls around their cities, and erect pyramid after pyramid. They spent 400 years enduring these afflictions. Eventually, they suffered a still greater cruelty. Maier’s illustrated edition contains

eighty-three photographs, twelve maps, five charts of genealogies and dynasties, marginal dates of important biblical events, a thorough index and a select bibliography. In addition, it offers a detailed condensation of two of Josephus’ great books –“Antiquities of the Jews” and “The Jewish Wars”– as a chronological, literary and understandable whole. The main passages are presented word by word. The 40 years of wandering had almost come to an end, only 30 days were left. Moses felt –on God’s prompting– that it was time for him to die. So he appointed Joshua to be his successor, both as commander of the armies and as prophet to receive the messages of God. God had indicated Moses that this was the man of His choice. Then Moses called together an assembly near the Jordan at Abile and delivered many words of wisdom to them, and well as laws for their government. On one of the following days, he recited a poem he had composed in hexameter that contained predictions of future events. Paul L. Maier, at the beginning of his book published in the United States in 1988, assures that, “If Josephus had not existed, all our biblical dictionaries and comments would be substantially smaller. His writings are simply essential to any scholar of the Scriptures.” Likewise, he says that, “Apart from the Bible itself, Josephus is the most important historical source to understand the entire biblical era, and, regarding some characters in the New Testament, it is an even more complete source.” David had just returned to Ziklag on the same day the Philistine victory. third day after the fight, the man who killed Saul at his bidding arrived at Ziklag, his clothes torn and ashes on his head. He told David that the Hebrews were defeated and tens of thousands of them killed, including Saul and his sons. To prove that, he produced the crown and the bracelet and gave them to David. David tore his garments, weeping and lamenting all that day. His grief was increased by the memory of Jonathan, his dearest friend who had saved his life. With precision and accuracy, “Josephus, the Essential Writings” shows in the first place the summary of the book

“Antiquities of the Jews” throughout nineteen chapters. Released between the years 93 and 94 A.D., Josephus’ ambitious book tells the story of the Jewish people, from creation until the war with Rome. In this regard, Maier declares, “The narrative shows the antiquity, the sublimity and reasonableness of the Jewish culture and beliefs.” Alexander left the kingdom to Alexandra, his wife, who was loved by the multitude, since they thought she had opposed the cruel measures of her husband. She had two sons by Alexander: Hyrcanus, the elder, whom she made high because

he was lethargic and incompetent, and Aristobulus, whom she confined to private life because he was a hothead. Alexandra favored the Pharisees, the Jewish sect most strict in the observance of the laws. They became the real rulers of the nation, although Alexandra managed with great wisdom, doubling the military and intimidating neighboring rulers. In its second part, Maier’s book addresses in eight chapters the most essential part of another of Josephus’ works: “The Jewish Wars.” Printed in Greek between years 77 and 78, this book, written origi-

nally in Aramaic, takes us to the events that took place between the Maccabees rebellion and the last Roman military actions in Judea. “Josephus, the Essential Writings” is one of the few existing sources of knowledge about the First Jewish-Roman War. Famine now raged in the city, and the rebels took all the food they could find in a house-to-house search, while the poor starved to death by the thousands. People gave all their wealth for a little measure of wheat, and hid to eat it hastily and in secret so it would not be taken from them. Women would snatch the food from their husbands, children from fathers, and mothers from the very mouths of infants. Many of the rich were put to death by Simon and John, while the sufferings of the people were so fearful that they can hardly be told, and no other city ever endured such miseries. Born on May 31, 1931 and author of sixteen books about the history of Christianity, Paul L. Maier provided with “Josephus, the Essential Writings” an essential material that preserves the core of Josephus’ works. Maier, a former professor of ancient history at the Western Michigan University, sought to spread these writings, because, in his opinion, they are not just crucial to understand the first century after the birth of Jesus, but are as well a religious literature fascinating in itself. Caesar ordered the entire city and the temple smashed to the ground, leaving only the tallest of the towers standing –Phasael, Hippicus and Mariamne– and part of the western wall to show posterity the strong defenses which had yielded to the Romans. He now gathered his army in order to commend them for their achievements and confer rewards on those who had particularly distinguished themselves. A high tribunal was erected in the center of the camp, and Titus mounted it with his principal officers. He thanked the army for their magnificent efforts and praised them for their obedience and courage l February 2016 / Impacto evangelistic

IN THE SWEET BY-AND-BY Famous Christian song written by Sanford Fillmore Bennett and set to music by Joseph Philbrick Webster. It gives a message on how good it is to stand by the Lord.

I

n the Sweet By-and-By,” composed unexpectedly in the 19th century, remains a banner of the Gospel with more than 148 years of history. It was written in 1867 by Christian poet Sanford Fillmore Bennett, author of over 100 evangelical songs, and set to music by composer Joseph Philbrick Webster, distinguished figure of the American gospel music. The melody has had a profound impact on people thanks to its moving message on how pleasant it is to stand by the Son of God. Bennett’s song, famous worldwide, was created during the visit of his colleague Webster. Writer Ira David Sankey, in his book “My life and the Story of the Gospel Hymns,” collects Bennett’s testimony: “He came into my place of busi-

ness... I said, “Webster, what is the matter now?” “It’s no matter,” he replied, “it will be all right by and by.” The idea of the hymn came me like a flash of sunlight, and I replied, “The Sweet By and By!”… I penned the words of the hymn as fast as I could write…Taking his violin, he played the melody and then jotted down the notes of the chorus.” Sanford Fillmore Bennett was born on June 21, 1836 in Eden, New York. He showed from an early age his faith in the Lord and skills for composition. When he was 14, he debuted as an author and published his first poems in a journal of the city of Waukegan. He attended the Waukegan Academy and the University of Michigan. Then, in 1860, he moved to Elkhorn, Wisconsin, and became associate editor of the journal “Elkhorn Independent.” Joseph Philbrick Webster was born on February 22, 1819. Like Bennett, he showed his love to God and his interest in Christian music since he was very little. Gifted with a great talent, he studied with renowned composers of the 19th century, such as Lowell Mason and George James Webb. Afterwards, with this knowledge, he made a great tour all over the East of the United States, showing his vocal skills. In 1859, he settled down in the city of Elkhorn, where he met Bennett. Included in countless hymnbooks and translated into many languages, the song “In the Sweet By-and-By” is one of the most-adapted gospel songs in the history of Christianity. Among the most famous singers that recorded this song are Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and Loretta Lynn. Similarly, this song was part of the sound-

track of the successful American movies such as “Sergeant York,” “Benny & Joon,” and “Django Unchained.” “In the Sweet By-and-By” was part of a song collection made by Webster and Bennett, entitled “The Ring of Seal” and released in the United States in 1868. Its main message is the possibility of redemption for those who have surrendered to the Lord. It also offers a message of hope thanks to the mercy of the Lord and the relief of his presence l February 2016 / Impacto evangelistic

THE “DOCTOR” WHO SERVED GOD John Graham Lake preached the Word of the Lord through a ministry based on amazing healings, abnegation, renunciation, sacrifice and a faith made of steel. Edgardo LLugdar

F

ew evangelists have been able to prove their healing gift like John Graham Lake, who did not need big halls, specific schedules, lights or a show. He would lay his hands on patients anywhere, anytime, without protocols, in the street, at church, in hospitals, in front of doctors, and amazing healings would take place. He was a Christian of indisputable testimony as well. When he became rich and successful, he sold everything and gave away his money to the poor to become a missionary, with less than one dollar in his pocket. Lake was born on March 18, 1870, in Ontario, Canada, in a large typical family composed by 18 members, who would later move to the American State of Michigan. His parents were strong, healthy and vigorous, but he and his siblings would suffer from several physical conditions. Furthermore, before he decided to devote his life to the Lord, John lost eight members of his family and one of his brothers spent 32 years as a disabled man. Doctors, nurses, hospitals, hearses, funerals, cemeteries, headstones and a house in permanent grief were all important part of his childhood and adolescence. John’s first encounter with the Word of the Lord was at the age of sixteen during an evangelist meeting. He immediately devoted his life to Jesus Christ and soon after began to congregate in a Christian church. From that moment on, he gave his burden MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 30 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

to God and knew that He was the only one who could heal him, as he was constantly ill. One the diseases that most affected him in his youth was rheumatism. With his body deformed by the disease, he heard about the healing ministry of John Alexander Dowie, a famous Christian of the 19th century, and decided to visit Chicago so that they would pray for him. During the service, an old grey-haired man approached Lake and laid his hands on him. Immediately, the power of God went through John’s body, straightened his legs, and he could walk out to the street. After his healing, he took his disabled brother to Dowie’s home, where he was healed. Afterwards, he returned to Chicago with one of his sisters, who suffered from breast cancer. When they first arrived, she had doubts about it, but once she heard the Word of God, preached with such great power, her faith grew and she was healed. Her pain disappeared instantaneously and her biggest tumor fell down a few days later. MAN OF THE LORD In February 1893, John Lake married sister Jennie Stevens. The family was blessed with seven children. Two years later, however, Jennie was diagnosed with tuberculosis and heart failure. These illnesses became more and more serious, and in 1898, doctors told John that there was no hope. On April 28, 1898, he felt stronger after reading in the Holy Scriptures how Jesus had healed the sick. He met pastor Dowie to pray for his wife’s healing. Steven’s paralysis disappeared and her heart beating became normal again. God had saved her entirely. In 1901, Lake moved to Zion, Illinois, to be closer to John Alexander Dowie. Soon after, he was preaching at night, studying whenever he could, and working as a full-time manager in Dowie’s building during the day. In 1904, after acquiring some properties in Zion, he moved to Chicago after almost declaring bankruptcy. There he bought a seat in the city’s stock market, and by the following year, he had managed to obtain over one hundred and thirty thousand dollars and purchase properties for ninety thousand dollars. Soon after, he also became an expert in business consultancy. However, his life changed abruptly. Continue reading–– February 2016 / Impacto evangelistic

As successful as he was, John began to feel great need of God. Such was his unstoppable impulse for the things of the Lord that he would leave his office, break down and cry out. One day, the glory of Jesus Christ came to his life through a powerful expression of faith. Lake spoke in unknown languages. After that, he preached the Word of God to thousands of people night after night and day after day. Furthermore, a new wonder took place in him. His nature became so sensitive that he was able to lay his hands on the sick and heal them. Later, in 1907, Lake’s wish to serve the Lord increased even more. In those days, overwhelmed by his desire to announce the good news, he decided to give up all his properties and donate them to propel Christianity. He devoted himself entirely to spreading the Gospel and became fully dependent on God. In those days, he also met pastor William Seymour, leader of the revival that took place in Azusa Street, and approached the Pentecostal movement. His friendship with reverend Seymour was very close and even declared about him that, “I do not believe that any man in modern times had a more wonderful deluge of God in his life than God gave that dear fellow.” EVANGELISTIC WORK One year later, while he was preaching the Word of God in northern Illinois, John Graham Lake felt these words from within, “You shall go to Africa.” It did not take much for God’s command to come true. On April 1, 1908, he left the United States to Johannesburg, the largest and most populated city in South Africa, along with his wife, his seven children and missionary Thomas Hezmalhalch, with the purpose of propelling Christianity. Supported by Hezmalhalch, Lake started his evangelistic work on May 25, 1908 in Doornfontein, a suburb in Johannesburg. Soon enough, he had planted the seed of the Gospel and transformed the lives of thousands of non-converted.

Based on the Bible, John developed a fruitful ministry, renowned for the many healings done by faith. However, on February 1, 1913, Lake returned to the United States after training around twelve hundred preachers, establishing six hundred and twenty five churches, and harvesting over one hundred thousand new followers that converted to Christianity after hearing him preach about the Holy Scriptures. Back in the States, Lake settled in Spokane, a city located in the State of Washington, where he founded a congregation that drew the attention of people all over the world, as God healed many sick people in it. In May 1920, he moved to Portland, the biggest city in Oregon, where he began another similar Evangelist church and healing ministry. In 1924, John’s work in favor of God led him to become an outstanding man

Weakened, tired and almost blind, John Graham Lake returned to Spokane in 1931 at the age of sixty-one. There he “talked” with God and asked him not to take away his sight so that he could continue spreading the

truth inside the Holy Scriptures. The Lord granted his request. Four years later, in early September 1935, he suffered a stroke that kept him unconscious for two weeks. he figure of a man showed up in the dark of night. He was zigzagging on the edge of a road with slow and weak movements, as if he was about to collapse. The young man, tormented by constant suffering, had decided to commit suicide by throwing himself under their wheels of an oncoming vehicle. It was midnight in this desolate place by the Panamericana Norte Highway, near the city of Chiclayo, Peru. Jimmy Coronel, 21, was submerged in the swamp of endless anguish, and thought that the only way to end his suffering was death. However, minutes passed by and no vehicle appeared until he suddenly heard a powerful but gentle voice. - Don’t do it, Jimmy, don’t do it.

The impact of the providential call was such that he immediately regained lucidity and walked away from the road, while his body suffered a strange shudder. He felt as if something heavy and gloomy had left his body, setting him free.

The impact of the providential call was such that he immediately regained lucidity and walked away from the road, while his body suffered a strange shudder. He felt as if something heavy and gloomy had left his body, setting him free. He did not understand what was happening; he just knew that he had to stay away from that dark place. He sneaked his way back into his house so that no one could see him; it had been a while since he last went home. Inside, he heard the same heated discussions between his parents, but some words from his mother made him understand everything. - Let’s go find Jimmy! He’s my son! – she said desperately. Those words changed his life forever. Jimmy had believed for years that nobody loved him, but now, from his hideout, he could see how wrong he had been. His mother was desperate knowing that he had been lost for several days and, in the midst of her anguish, she wanted to go look for him. He went to his room and began to cry and ask God’s forgiveness for attempting suicide and thinking badly of his mother. Until that day, he had been sure that she hated him; he had had that impression since someone told that him that he was

an illegitimate child. THE BEGINNING OF MISFORTUNES His misfortunes began one morning of November 1979, when he was 11 years old. All of a sudden, he fell to the floor in his classroom, shaking, foaming at the mouth and hitting his head to bleed. The teacher and his classmates help him before something more serious could happen. Several minutes later, he woke up in the principal’s office with his mother by his side, crying over the injuries he had suffered. Several days later, he was diagnosed with epilepsy and condemned to live with periodic seizures, subsequent injuries and scars all over his body. After this misfortune, the relationship with parents and siblings began to crumble, especially when money became scarce. The situation reached its limit one year later, when one of their neighbors began to compare each child in the Coronel Rojas family with the light-skinned parents. - Jimmy is so ugly. like anyone in the family. He seems adopted – she said in front of the child. On hearing these words, Jimmy shuddered and began to compare himself with

ened, as his parents seemed to be fond of all their children but him. STREET REMEDIES When he turned 15, Jimmy’s seizures became so frequent that he had to leave school. This meant a bother to his parents and siblings, as they had to care for him day and night. Without being able to study and with no other choice in life than taking big amounts of drugs, his parents tried on him all kinds of street remedies that, according to neighbors and friends, would end his ailments. They made him drink home concoctions and bitter herbs and take aromatic plant baths – common practices in this area of Peru – to cleanse him of the illness. His parents took him to Tucume – a city known for its shamans –, so that the best of its sorcerers could cure him of his disease and violent reactions. None of the treatments reduced his seizures, but increased his aggressiveness against all his brothers. When he regained his strength, he ran away from home to work in small jobs that did not demand great physical effort. Some days later, he was fired when he suffered a sudden seizure. - Go home, boy, you’re a good for nothing – he was told. One year later, he returned home and his parents made him drink bull’s blood – considered an infallible remedy against epilepsy. Jimmy would go every day to the city slaughterhouse to drink the blood of the beasts killed there. Things got worse later. Jimmy began to suffer from mental disorders and hallucinate terrifying characters visiting him day and night. In addition, he had intense headaches and pangs all over his body. No expert could find out what was wrong with him. Family discussions carried on, until one day, after an intense fight with his parents, Jimmy took a knife and went to his room to kill himself. However, when he tried to stab himself in the chest, a strange

force took the knife away and threw it to the ground. - I think it was God who did not want me to die – he recalls. SLEEPING IN THE DUMP In 1989, Jimmy’s behavior, now 21, crossed the line of coexistence with his parents and the few siblings who were still living at their parent’s house. In September, he left home and wandered through parks, squares and several highly dangerous areas, and ended up in the city dump. His parents and siblings went to look for him, while Jimmy was harassed by infernal voices ordering him to kill himself. One day he saw his own death under the wheels of a bus on the highway. The idea stuck in his mind. For this reason, he went to the Panamericana Norte Highway, ready to throw himself under the wheels of any oncoming vehicle. That is when he heard God’s voice making him desist.

His misfortunes began one morning of November 1979, when he was 11 years old. All of a sudden, he fell to the floor in his classroom, shaking, foaming at the mouth and hitting his head to bleed. The teacher and his classmates help him before something more serious could happen. - From the day of my liberation to my conversion, the devil did everything to make me look and go back to bad things. NEW LIFE In 1994, five years after the divine experience that cured him of epilepsy and dementia, Jimmy surrendered to the Gospel and devoted his life to God. He remade his life in the ways of the Lord, with Diana Jimenez Berru, whom he married in July 2014. She accompanies him in his pastoral journey in this Peruvian city, where many get surprised to see him recovered and preaching the Word of God. - Many think that reading the Bible drives people crazy and they’re wrong. INTERVIEW

“WE NEED A REVIVAL IN INDIA” Accompanied by an interpreter, current Supervisor of India Rev. Sam Jacob tells how the Work is making progress in the Asian country despite the enormous difficulties.

P

astor Sam Jacob knows that it is not easy to make progress in a country with different doctrines. However, he is willing to continue working to spread the Word in India in spite of the harassment by certain groups who profess other faiths. How is the Work making progress in India? When the Work began in 2003, people did not give us a warm welcome, because they saw the Worldwide Missionary Movement (WMM) in a different way, but little by little our God has gained ground. Now the Work has increased and we receive calls from people asking about it. We are currently working in 11 states in the country. Our goal is that all states are covered by the work of the WMM. How did the Work begin? Our first Church was on a mountain, but we realized that we could not reach other cities because of the distance. Now by the grace of our Lord, we have reached many cities in India. We are working in Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, New Delhi and soon in Calcutta. We want to see a revival in India to preparing Christ’s Church before his coming. Are there many doctrinal differences with other Christian churches? There are many Pentecostal churches

that follow the Word of God in India, but they do not accept our doctrine and pay no attention to it. We know that God brought the Worldwide Missionary Movement to India to declare the truth. The Work is a model for other churches, and proof of it is the support of other congregations that watch Bethel Television. Following the recent attacks in France, how are Muslims seen in India? We know very well that we cannot include all Muslims in these attacks, because there are good and bad people in Islam. I have traveled to Muslim countries and noticed that they are very good in their Islamist way of life. Many of them are very open to the Gospel despite their doctrine. Unfortunately, some are using it in a very bad way with terrorist attacks. Have you suffered harassment by Hindu extremists? Hindus are very good people, but in their doctrine there are many religious fanatics. They want all India to join them and that is why they fight Christianity, because they fear that it will grow even more. On one hand, they fear Islam, but also Christianity, because they know that we have the truth, and we know it because the Lord is adding thousands and thousands of people in all India to His church l

MARRIAGE IN HEAVEN “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.” Revelation 19:7-8. Rev. Luis M. Ortiz

ucifer became the dark father of lying, ruler of darkness (Isaiah 14:12; Ezekiel 28:17; John 8:44; Ephesians 6:12). He was cast away from heaven together with all the angels who followed him in his rebellion (Revelation 12:4). In heaven there was certainly a void. A void that was to be filled by a new lineage, as God was going to beget children and create a new birth and a new creature. This new man, as heir of God in His own likeness, would seat on the MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 42 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

throne, in heavenly places. God created the first Adam in His own image and likeness. When He saw that the first Adam was alone, “the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him” (Genesis 2:18, 2123). This is how God made the first wedding in the world and the only one in the life of Adam. He said, “therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh” (Genesis 2:24).

DEVOTIONAL

In creating and joining together a man and a woman, God sought a godly seed (Malachi 2:15). Among His descendants, only those who believed in the coming last Adam, would become His children (1 John 5:1) and have rights of children, as heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). Seed sprouted and race multiplied. “The fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman” (Galatians 4:4), the last Adam. This last Adam had to be a man to redeem men. However, he could not come directly from the first Adam, because he would have been another fallen man. He had to be God to be without sin, and thus save men from sin, but he could not come as God (Philippians 2:5-7). So the wonder of the miraculous conception in the womb of Virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit happened, the incarnation of the Word was

made, the son of God, the God-Man and last Adam, was born. Aware of what was happening, Satan tried to kill the last Adam since he was born, and then tried to tempt him (Hebrews 4:15). He waited for him to fail, as the first Adam had failed, but the snake was crushed. The last Adam was the head of a new race; he came to start the divine and spiritual process of begetting children for God and taking them to the glory (Hebrews 2:10). He climbed the Hill of Calvary, knowing that, just as the first Adam had been opened on the side to create his companion, he would also be opened on the side to create, from the source of crimson, pure, innocent, clean blood, the bride and wife of the last Adam: the Church. The bride has been through over two thousand years of trials and suffering. However, when our Lord Jesus Christ descends from heaven “with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God, the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). The wedding parade will continue from the clouds upward, and from celestial balconies, the amazed heavenly host will say, “Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant?” (Song of Solomon 3:6). The wedding parade will continue rising, and again they will ask, “Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?” (Song of Solomon 6:10). The wedding parade will still go up and they will still exclaim, “Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved?” (Song of Solomon 8:5). When the Groom comes in with the bride, that is, with the Church, a great voice of much people will say, “And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints” (Revelation 19:1-8). God is protective of the marriage of man, especially among Christians, because marriage represents and refers to the marriage between Christ and the Church, the mystical but real and wonderful union between Christ and the redeemed for eternity l February 2016 / Impacto evangelistic

SEEKING GOD’S BLESSING “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.” John 8:31-38. Rev. Gustavo Martínez

T

he Lord is presenting to the Jews the Word as the highest source of freedom. “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man… Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.” (John 8:32-34). The biggest slavery is spiritual slavery, and they were slaves to sin. Jesus tells them: “I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.” (John 8:37). There was no room for the Word. There was room for politics, religion, carnal entertainment, social gatherings, anything, but there was no place to receive the Word of God. They rejected God’s blessing. The crowds were very expectant and followed the Lord for fish and bread, some for miracles, and others to accuse him; but the word had no place in their hearts. Because if the Word really found a place in them, they would love him, they would be different. However, the problem was that they were full of world, materialism, religiosity, vanity. The Bible speaks of two blind. “And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you? They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediaMISSIONARY MOVEMENT 44 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

tely their eyes received sight, and they followed him.” (Mt. 20:30-34). The blind wanted to be blessed, to be touched by God, to see, and they were sure that something was going to happen. God wants to expand your vision, God wants you to grow. How much do you want to grow? Where do you want to go? How far do you want to go? Some want blessings but have no room, because there are things in their hearts that do not belong there. They must be removed if you want blessing, if you want to grow, if you want the power of God. The Bible also speaks of a widow. “Now there cried a certain woman…unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead…and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen. And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not anything in the house, save a pot of oil. Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few. And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full. …when the vessels were full…” (2 Kings 4:1-7). Elisha said to the widow, “What shall I do for thee? Tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not anything in the house, save a pot of oil” and wants a big blessing. Do you want a big blessing? First, you have to go make room, open space. Borrow empty vessels from all your neighbors, not only a few; do not come with scarcity, do not come with limitations. If you are going to restrict yourself, stay home. Do you want to get

DEVOTIONAL

out of poverty? Do you want to get out of debts? Then make space where you are going to store the blessing, because what you are thinking of and longing for is great and you have nowhere to store it. In the days of Elisha, the Bible tells us that there was need for water in the army of Judah, Edom and Israel. Jehoshaphat King of Judah said, “Is there not here a prophet of the Lord that we may enquire of the Lord by him?” (2

Kings 3:11). Someone said, “Here’s Elisha” (v. 11). Through Elisha, the Lord said to prepare ponds, because it was going to rain. The Lord was going to send water, but if they did not have ponds, they would not have water to drink or for their cattle and beasts. So they began to make ponds and then all of a sudden it began to rain. The ponds were full, and the army, cattle, horses drank, they all drank and there was more than enough water. WORK IS A BLESSING “Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work. But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God…” Exodus 20:9-10.

Rev. Rubén Concepción

T

here was a time in human history when work was considered a curse; to be more precise, in the days before the great Protestant Reformation. It was said that work was a scourge, a punishment imposed on the man as a result of the original sin, a means of discipline to curb evil ways. The only work considered worthy was that of the religious in monasteries. However, according to the divine order we find that the Eternal Creator works tirelessly. Jesus said, “My Father worketh hitherto, and I work” (John 5:17). The Scriptures present God as the creator of the universe, as the great manager of life, as the architect, engineer and first worker of His creation. Because God himself is the first worker of His creation, not only in the creative act, but also in the work of preservation and conservation, work cannot be considered a curse. When man and woman were created, the Father of the human family assigned a place to the man, the best on Earth. He also assigned a job to do: to take care of the garden and work it (“And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it”, Genesis 2:15). He was also commissioned by God to watch over the animal creation and name each species (“And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field”, Genesis 2:19-20). In addition, He gave him authority over all earthly creation (“And God blessed them, and God said unto them, be fruitful, and multiply, MISSIONARY MOVEMENT 46 WORLDWIDE America • Europe • Oceanía • África • Asia

and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so”, Genesis. 1:28-30). Every human has a divine commission to fulfill in their short stay in this small world. The term ‘work’ covers everything we do with our talents in activities that result in the profit we use for our support and that of our families and the Work of God. Blessed be God who created us for work. We were created to be fruitful and productive (Genesis 1:28). The people of God is hardworking and first-class. The whole Bible shows us the culture of work as a blessing. Work improves the living conditions of the individual, the family, the community and the country. Two big branches of knowledge were in the hands of the first two men who were born in this creation: agriculture in the hands of Cain, the eldest son of Adam and Eve, and livestock farming in the hands of Abel, their youngest son. These two pioneers of work were successful and produced enough to thank the owner of the company, God, the Creator of the universe. They would bring offerings and sacrifices as gratitude. The whole Old Testament shows God’s people working. Noah was a great builder, farmer and stockbreeder. Abraham was a stockbreeder, farmer and trader. The Israelites were stockbreeders, farmers, artisans, builders, engineers and excellent managers. The culture of work is so rooted in the seed of Abraham that it is and has been an economic strength in the world, in every country and in all their history. Jesus said, “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” (John 9:45). We must work while it is day, because the night will come and no one can work. Let us work for the Work, the lost souls and the Lord. Only then, we will receive the reward. ustavo Martinez, President of the WMM, urged to follow the path of God with uprightness, transparency, honesty and integrity during his sermon at the first convention of the Work in Puerto Rico, where the motto “Uprightness 2016” played an important role. “Many give excuses for not being upright and honest by saying: I tried to do the right thing, but I saw that it would not work, so I decided to go with the flow, do what others do... Before God we have to be upright,

His message, based on Psalm 25:11, was a faithful reflection of the motto “Uprightness, guarantee of relationship with God,” which was announced among the expectation of believers. The Puerto Rican people extolled

the wonders of the Lord during the devotional, then welcomed Rev. Santos Gomez, who came from the Dominican Republic to share the Word of God. Thus, I thank you for giving us the good news and give us a message of peace and joy. God bless you today and forever. Puerto Rico

ADRIANA RICO I thank God for Impacto Evangelistic magazine because it has been a great blessing for my life. I was speaking with my pastor and told him: “Every time I read the magazine I feel as if water spills over me in abundance and satiates this spiritual hunger”. May the God of heaven poured wisdom, judgement, creativity and everything you need upon you every day in order to continue the Work. Colombia

JORGE CRUZ God bless you. I want to thank you for the edifying information you provide through this magazine. Keep up the work because we are living in the end times and we need to reap what is already sown. May God continue to bless you. Puerto Rico
