THE ALTERNATIVE
Here’s our bizarre guide to the beautiful game for the upcoming year – and it could just be the best yet!
I S FO R
AFCON
IT'S THE Africa Cup of Nations, and it’s happening right now in Morocco. Some of the world's biggest stars have flown back to ball out for their countries – we're talking about the likes of Achraf Hakimi, Victor Osimhen and Mohamed Salah. But the best is yet to come – as the final is on 18 January, in the Moroccan capital of Rabat! 12
OF FOOTBALL IN 2026! I S FO R
BUDAPEST
YOU MIGHT know it as the name of a George Ezra banger, but Budapest is also the capital of Hungary – and where the 2026 Champions League Final will be held. The 67,000-seater stadium, which will host the final on 30 May, is called the Puskas Arena, and is named after Hungarian football legend Ferenc Puskas!
I S FO R
I S FO R
CURACAO
DON’T WORRY, we hadn’t heard of this place until last month either. This teeny, tiny island in the middle of the Caribbean has just become the smallest nation EVER to qualify for a World Cup. They have a population the same size as Norwich, and half that of Newcastle!
I S FO R
DAUGAVA STADIUM
‘DAUGA WHAT…?' you may ask. It's actually the stadium in Riga, the capital of Latvia, where England booked their ticket to the 2026 World Cup. The Three Lions qualified in style as Thomas Tuchel masterminded a 5-0 thrashing of Lativa. That’s the easy bit done – can they now bring the trophy home for the first time since 1966?
EUROPEAN TOUR THERE AREN’T many better feelings than following your team across the continent, especially when your club is in Europe for the first time. That’s the case for Crystal Palace who are in the Europa Conference League after lifting the FA Cup in May. Can the Eagles go all the way and claim the Conference crown?
F
I S FO R
FIBULA
OUCH! The fibula is the big bone in your lower leg, and it’s what Barcelona baller Aitana Bonmati broke last month – she's now out for five months. The silky Spaniard is the best in the business – she won the Women’s Ballon d’Or in each of the last three years. Get well soon, Bon!
I S FO R
GOAT
THIRTY-EIGHT and still going strong, Lionel Messi has just led Inter Miami to their first MLS Cup and he was also top scorer. Will 2026 see Leo fire Argentina to back-to-back World Cup wins? And will he become the tournament's all-time top scorer? This could be a momentous 12 months in football!
I S FO R
HEPTAD
CLUB CLASH!
Which of these clubs did NOT beat Chelsea last season?
THAT’S THE WORD for a set of seven. Why has this made our list? Well, last season, Chelsea Women lifted their sixth successive WSL title so, this season, they’re on the hunt for a heptad. Do you back the Blues to secure their seventh title in a row? ANSWER Arsenal
14
I S FO R I S FO R
ITTIHAD BASYOUN
ITTIHAD IS the Arabic word for ‘United’ which is why there are a few clubs with Ittihad in their name. This one is in Egypt and was the first-ever club of Mohamed Salah. Last season's Premier League and Golden Boot winner has had a tough end to 2025 – but we’re backing Mo to bounce back. What do YOU think? MO IS STILL SICK
MO IS FINISHED
I S FO R
KICKERTORJÄGERKANONE
IN GERMAN, it means Kicker-Goal-Hunter-Cannon – it's basically the Bundesliga Golden Boot. Bayern Munich's Harry Kane has won it the last two seasons – and he's nailed on to make it a hat-trick for 2025-26. Wunderbar, Harold!
JUICE
PICKLE JUICE to be exact… yuck! This is said to help ease cramps much faster than water, but we wonder if it’s just one big wind-up. Holes in socks, bans on ketchup and now slurping pickle juice – what next?
I S FO R
LA MASIA
THIS IS the world famous La Masia, which in Catalan means ‘The Farmhouse’. It is Barcelona’s academy and is called La Masia because until 2011, the building really was an old farmhouse – but, instead of pigs, cows and donkeys there was Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi. Barca are still building ballers, just look at Lamine Yamal – last year, the 18-year-old came second in the Ballon d’Or, but we're pretty sure he'll go one better in 2026. The boy is incredible!
I S FO R
MCFRATM
NO, WE haven’t just closed our eyes and bashed the keyboard. McFratm is the nickname given to Scott McTominay by Napoli fans. Frat’m is Italian for ‘my brother’ and the Mc is from his surname. The Scudetto winner and Serie A Player of the Season has also fired Scotland to their first World Cup since 1998. 2026 could be the year McFratm goes global!

NAUGHTY STEP
THERE ARE some new rules in football this year: pens can be retaken if you kick the ball twice, and corners are awarded if a goalkeeper holds onto the ball for more than eight seconds. We’ve got a suggestion: ditch yellow cards and send players to the naughty step instead! 16
THAT’S HOW many pounds it took for Prem champions Liverpool to break the British transfer record and sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle on deadline day last summer. It hasn’t been an easy start for their new No.9, but he’s finally firing and we reckon 2026 could the year he hits his scoring streak!
I S FO R
QUADRUPLE
I S FO R
PEP
NO, NOT that one! We’re talking about Pep Lijnders. He’s a Dutch football coach who has moved to Man. City to link up with Pep Guardiola. Before that, Lijnders was at Liverpool, first as a youth coach and then becoming Jurgen Klopp’s assistant in 2014. He was central to the Reds’ recent success – can he now bring the magic back to City?
ARSENAL HAVE only won one trophy under Mikel Arteta – the FA Cup in his first season – but this could be the year that all changes. We reckon the Gunners could complete the set this season and get their hands on four trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup and the Champions League!
I S FO R
R RENNES
WELL, STADE RENNAIS, if you want to get all fancy about it. 2025 Golden Boy winner Desire Doue and Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele both started at the French club – they’re one of Europe’s elite talent factories. Can Rennes magic-up another tekky teen in 2026?
I S FO R
SEVEN-HUNDREDAND-FORTY-SEVEN
THAT’S HOW many teams started out in the FA Cup this season – 747 . But that number plummets to 124 after the early qualification rounds. Crystal Palace won the competition for the first time last season, while Arsenal are the all-time record winners. Whose name will be etched onto the famous trophy in May?
I S FO R
TOWELS
I S FO R
TOWELS AT the ready, folks, because long throws are BACK! With stronger defences and less space to attack, all the top teams have had to work out new ways to score. Turns out the answer is to grab a towel, dry the ball and launch it into the box. Teams now have a long-throw specialist and it’s causing chaos. Get ready for more long-throw theatrics in 2026!
ULLEVAAL
ULLEVAAL IS a neighbourhood of Oslo, the capital of Norway. It isn’t well known, but it is home to Ullevaal Stadium – which this year will host the Women’s Champions League final. It is the national stadium of Norway and the largest in the country. Arsenal lifted last season’s UWCL – can an English team go all the way again?
I S FO R
WONDERKIDS
I S FO R
VIKING
SPEAKING OF Norway, their men’s team are heading to their first World Cup for almost 30 years – thanks to Erling Haaland. The Viking scored 16 goals in eight qualifying matches to book his team’s place in North America. His nickname The Viking is due to his size and strength but also because the famous warriors come from Norway and neighbouring Scandinavian countries. We can’t wait to see Erl in action this summer! 18
2026 IS the year of the tekky teen! Arsenal’s Max Dowman is turning 16, but is already getting first-team chances. It’s the same for Liverpool’s 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha, and Chelsea’s Estevao is bossing it in blue at only 18. Which wonderkid will break out in 2026? Man. United academy ace JJ Gabriel is totally one to look out for!
X
THAT STANDS for Expected Goals and is used by brainy boffins to work out how many goals a player or team is likely to score, based on their shooting stats. It tells you which forwards are running-hot, who the best attacking teams are, and which strikers should score more. So far this season, Haaland has the highest xG in Europe, but Kylian Mbappe has scored more – which shows he’s burying harder chances. Who do you think will top the scoring charts in 2026?
I S FO R
ZZZZZ
SPEAKING OF relegation, Wolves have been a snooze-fest all season in front of goal. They’ve only scored eight goals in the Prem so far – and they've failed to score in nine of their 15 games. It’s not just scoring that they’re struggling with though – Wolves have a total of two Prem points. They're on course to smash the record for the fewest Premier League points ever!
I S FO R
Y0-YO
FOR THE past two seasons, the three promoted clubs have gone straight back down to the Championship, like a yo-yo – but this could be the year that all changes. It’s not looking good for Leeds or Burnley, but Sunderland have had a sizzling start to the season and should stay well clear of the drop!
Stats correct as of 16 December 2025.

NEWCASTLE’S MIDFIELD trio picks itself, but they could do with some help and ideally someone looking to prove a point in a World Cup year. Gallagher’s all-action style would be perfectly suited to Eddie Howe’s team, and after starting just four La Liga games for Atletico Madrid this season, he’d be keen on a move!

FOREST AREN’T scared to spend, and this could be another busy month as they try to stay clear of the drop. Former Brighton baller Estupinan only moved to AC Milan last summer, but he's fallen down the left-back pecking order. With Ola Aina out injured, a move back to the Prem could work for all parties!

THE BLACK CATS pulled off one of the signings of the season in Granit Xhaka, but they could do with a younger alternative who also has Premier League experience. Step forward, ex-Arsenal man Guendouzi, now at Lazio, who’s exactly the kind of midfield battler who could share the load in the middle of the park!

WITH DOMINIC SOLANKE struggling with fitness, Spurs could do with another option to lead their line, and 21-year-old Spanish striker Samu could be the answer. The Porto powerhouse has been bossing it in Portugal, scoring 19 last season and seven this campaign. He’d cost a hefty sum, but could be worth it!

JARROD BOWEN needs help in the Hammers’ attack, and a short-term deal for Liverpool’s Italian forward is a move that could suit everyone. Chiesa’s cameos off the bench saw him win the Reds’ Player of the Month award for September, so a run of first-team action could get him firing again!

WOLVES NEED something, or someone, special to turn this season around, and we’ve found just the guy! ‘Pote’ spent two years in Wolves’ academy before returning to Portugal and he deserves a second shot. He joined Sporting Lisbon as Bruno Fernandes’ replacement in 2020 and is now their creative king!
