WELCOME
A warm welcome to the Spring 2024 issue of RoadSmart magazine, where we’re focusing on electric vehicles (EVs). We’ve taken a trip to a Tesla dealership with a group of IAM RoadSmart members – to hear from Tesla staff and motor industry figures and find out what EVs mean for us as advanced riders and drivers. And our diligence knows no bounds – editor Matt Rigby has even been for a spin in a Porsche Taycan in the name of journalistic research. Such commitment! Find out more on page 38.
However, no discussion of an EV motoring future would be complete without a debate on the planned 2035 ban on non-hybrid petrol and diesel vehicles. Is it the right thing to do? We ask just that question on page 14.
We’re also looking at the science behind traffic. You can read about that by turning to page 19, but first a word about our Autumn Forums, which took place just after the last issue of RoadSmart was published.
Throughout October, we delivered eight events across the UK. Our purpose was clear: to share the great progress made over the past 12 months as One IAM – members, staff, volunteers, Groups and partners – which is thanks to the continued support and commitment of our community.
As we continue to champion the One IAM message, it was important –not only for myself and the Senior Team, but also for middle managers and fieldbased staff – to meet with Group Chairs and Secretaries; all volunteers who give so much of their time to support the cause.
“AT OUR AUTUMN FORUMS WE SHARED THE GREAT PROGRESS MADE OVER THE PAST 12 MONTHS DUE TO THE CONTINUED SUPPORT OF OUR COMMUNITY”
We were able to share updates on our national campaigning (including drug-driving and motorcycle PPE), our strategic plan that will further cement the future of the charity, plus some of the preliminary research we’ve done with younger people and our research around new product development. Overall, the events generated positive feedback from members as well as some food for thought for us.
In November, we attended both the Classic Motor Show and Motorcycle Live, the latter our flagship event, where we met with drivers and riders of all abilities, whilst planning started for our commercial event attendance throughout the new year.
