GROWTH. That may be the best word to sum up 2023 at Immanuel. With the worst of the pandemic now in the rear view mirror, we have begun to see signs of life everywhere. For example, our children’s ministry has tripled in size in five years, Sunday services are bursting at the seams, the ‘temperature’ of our worship is going up, small groups are full, baptisms and new members are common, and I hear from people every week who are experiencing renewal in their walk with Jesus!

None of this is by accident. So many people give of their time, talent, and treasure to move our mission forward. Thank you all for your commitment.

Church growth is a partnership between people who create the right conditions for growth and God the Holy Spirit who works in the midst.

Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work. 1 Cor 3:5-8 NLT I believe, as we continue to do our part, in the coming years, we will see God work even more powerfully amongst us, and through us to a world who needs to know Jesus more than ever.

GOD Sunday morning services are an important part of how our church helps individuals grow in their relationship with God; through worship and Bible preaching, communion and prayer, fellowship and encouragement. Many people have shared that Sunday services at Immanuel have become the favourite part of their week, joyfully gathering as a multigenerational, multi-ethnic community representing over 14 countries or native tongues.

Attendance is steadily increasing, and our online reach is also growing thanks to the professional work of our Production Team.

WORS HIP MINISTRY About 40 singers and musicians in our congregation this year came together to lead the church in worship.

Three Sundays included a ‘worship choir’ which has really taken off. We are so grateful for a team of people who are willing to put themselves out there, week a er week. Seven NEW songs were introduced in 2023 among the roughly 75 songs in regular rotation.

We listen to the worship playlist you made on Spotify and love it! You have introduced our family to some new worship songs we did not know before (over the past few months). Thank you for everything you do!

HOSPITALITY TEAM When people come into our facility, we want their experience to reflect the love of God and the warmth of His people. To that end, dedicated volunteers work hard week a er week to make people feel right at home. This starts at the door, as people are welcomed by cheerful Greeters. The Immanuel Cafe serves up “Coffee and Conversation” with hot drinks before and a er each service.

Sometimes a special occasion like a baptism, graduation or birthday warrants a cake a er the service, too.

On Easter morning we held a pancake and sausage brunch between the two services. In September we organized dozens of sandwiches for the Kick Off picnic in the park. The team worked with Hannah to provide food for the NEXT Conference, and in November, served food for Landon and Leah Barkman’s wedding.

In 2023, we hosted a Food Safety course which was taken by 17 of our congregation plus a group from Palliative Care. The Hospitality team helped coordinate drivers for transportation to church, and provided billets for sport’s camp leaders. The Decorating Team made the building look awesome, with a massive floral display for Easter and a set of modern textured trees for Christmas. Many thanks to all the volunteers without whom none of this would have been possible.

LIBRARY The library exists to support your walk with God by providing access to quality Christian resources. It has been wonderful to see many new faces using the library this year and it has been a pleasure to help people find new media to enjoy.

220 books were added to the library in 2023. Many were donations but some were specifically purchased upon request. That adds 15 feet and 167 lbs to our book stack. According to the website that stores our database, that would be the height of a double-decker bus and the weight of 8.68 adult badgers!

Though not intentional, the number of books purchased this year by female authors was almost as many as by men. This is promising since, overall, the number of books by women in the library is half the number of those by men.

SENIORS HOME SERVICES

18 NEW MEMBERS As a sign of their commitment to Christ, His mission, and this local church, 18 people officially joined our church as new members in 2023: Andrew Tichonchuk, Jennifer Tichonchuk, Bette Pring, Darren Pring, Brad Sullivan, Taralyn Sullivan, Brian Kinsman, Greg Porter, Candice Porter, Camden Porter, Carlos Vargas, Case Stromenberg, Deb Stromenberg, Heather Stanton, Randy Stanton, Lynn Cormier, Heather Crozier, and Colleen Geddes.

This year, a er a long Covid hiatus, we resumed monthly services at The Mira Long Term Care Centre, with several volunteers from Immanuel assisting with music. Services also began at the Parkland Retirement Home, at the request of one of our Immanuel members who lives there, whose heart is to share the gospel with other residents.

Twice-a-month services began in November and are enjoyed by about 25 residents each time, plus some Immanuel people. Our two pastors and two others take turns preaching and leading these services.

ONE ANOTHER Church should feel like family. So, we have fun! We build friendships! We help each other follow Jesus. We pray together and support one another through the hard parts of life.

Here are some of the ways we did that in 2023...

MEN’S BREAKFAST About 24 men enjoy fellowship, a devotional talk, and good food at monthly Men’s Breakfasts at Smitty’s, usually on the first Monday of the month. The late Reg Austin organized these breakfasts for many years.

While others have now taken on the task, he will be greatly missed.

YOUNG ADULTS BIBLE STUDY

It became clear in 2023 that a growing need in our church is a ministry designed specifically for those in the college and career stage of life. A er much prayer, a monthly Young Adults Bible Study began in the fall.

The group meets for lunch on the 3rd Sunday of the month, providing a free lunch for a group of about 10 young adults age 17-35, with discussion around some of the big theological and life questions young adults are wrestling with.

Thank you for meeting me at a time in my life when I wasn’t sure the church would accept someone so actively questioning their faith. Thank you for blessing me with your honesty, and for opening the door to new friendships.

LADIES MORNING OUT January 2023 saw the re-start of Ladies Morning Out a er a hiatus during the pandemic. We met on Tuesday mornings from 9:30-11:30, in the Family Resource Room, for fellowship, prayer, and Bible Study. Our group

consists of ladies of all ages, backgrounds, and from local churches. This year we did these Bible Studies under the leadership of Dawn Dykeman: The Gospel in Life by Tim Keller, Anxious for Nothing and Unshakable Hope by Max Lucado. In the fall of 2023, we were able to hire a babysitter to look a er our little ones in the nursery, to support our young mothers. In April and November, in partnership with Groundswell Church, we hosted the Open Closet, free clothing day, for the Truro community. These were well attended and many individuals and families were blessed by this ministry. In the fall, we committed to being prayer partners for TREY. In December, we were able to bless the ladies at TREY by providing them with gi s for Christmas. We are so thankful for God’s leading and direction at LMO in 2023. We invite all ladies to join us for LMO on Tuesday mornings and bring a friend!

FIBRE ARTS

Fibre Arts at Immanuel began in late October of 2023 with the goal of providing a safe, inclusive, and creative space for people of all ages and genders, to engage in the fibre arts.

Meeting on Wednesday evenings, this a small group open to those who want to learn how to crochet, knit, or stitch.

HOME CHURCH

We had 7 “Home Churches” in 2023, meeting mostly in homes, led by volunteers. These groups are more than just a Bible Study, they are spaces where people can find belonging, share life, and encourage one another.

“This year our Home Church has focused on learning to love each other, and pray together and eat together, and it’s been like a solid rock in my week. When I’ve had a rough week, I know Tuesday’s coming and I’m going to see the people who lift me in prayer and laugh with me and cry with me and feed me delicious things. It’s been a really big blessing.”

FELLOWSHIP & FUN

The church family that plays together stays together, and we like to have fun! Friday Night Fill Ups (monthly potluck), sledding party, skating at the oval, Crokinole tournament, 2 baseball games at Victoria Park, picnics, Easter brunch, and a Superbowl party were some of the highlights of our efforts to bring everyone together for good clean family fun.

This year, the community care ministry volunteers have also been working together to provide extra assistance in the form of grocery gi cards each month to one household who they deem could really benefit from a little extra support. One volunteer shared this: “When I delivered the gift cards on Wednesday she had tears in her eyes. She said ‘Thank you and sorry for the tears but they are definitely tears of happiness.’ Her husband said ‘I don’t cry but I came very close, we can’t thank you enough. We’ve been through hard times and haven’t seen many people that seem to care but we can tell you guys really do, it makes us feel very good. We were sick over Christmas so have really nothing at all right now so this comes at a perfect time.’”

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR Several churches came together in 2023 to show some love to our community in the name of Jesus, through handing out water bottles, delivering cookies, and picking up trash.

NEW PARENTS BASKETS 20 baskets of baby supplies were put together and gi ed to new moms and dads completing prenatal classes at Maggie’s Place.

CHRISTMAS INDEX Thanks to the generosity of our church family, we were able to help 20 local families by providing them with food and gi s at Christmas, through the Christmas Index program. Over the span of four weeks we collected all of the items, which were delivered in mid-December by volunteers.

TREY ROAD RALLY A er Hurriance Fiona prevented us from organizing the event in 2022, we were pleased to bring back the Annual Road Rally - a fundraiser for TREY, one of our local ministry partners. Over $7,000 was raised, and a lot of fun was had!

REFUGEE MINISTRY Immanuel is blessed, as part of the CBAC denomination, to be able to occasionally help support refugees coming to our community. Most recently, we are partnered with a local sponsorship group, and Pastor Hannah continues to support the Al-Radi family with the process of bringing some of their extended family from Syria.

ATLANTIC BAPTIST WOMEN Our Atlantic Baptist Women’s group continued to meet and participate with other ABW groups throughout Atlantic Canada to support a variety of missions efforts. in support of various ABW initiatives. $861 given

STEP: LEBANON It was a BIG year for our STEP program. In 2023, we made a fresh 3-year commitment to our partners in Lebanon. We are commited to praying for the church in Lebanon and to raising $10k a year which is used in two ways: 1. To provide scholarships for students studying for ministry at Arab Baptist Theological Seminary (ABTS).

2. To fund missional projects spearheaded by graduates of ABTS around the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Not only did we succesfully raise the funds for year 1 of our second 3-year commitment, but Pastors Hannah and Michael had the privilege of travelling to Lebanon in September, along with a Canadian team, to see the work firsthand, meet the partner, participate in a global conference on peace, and celebrate with ABTS students at their graduation.

We create awesome opportunities for kids and youth to encounter and follow Jesus.

WOW NURSERY

Our babies and toddlers had a great year in World of Wonder (WoW) during Sunday morning worship. WoW is a safe and engaging space for our youngest church attendees and operates with a Schedule Coordinator and 14 committed adult volunteers and youth helpers.

DISCOVERY PARK KIDS

In the fall, two teens each started their own small group Bible studies and invited their friends to participate weekly.

One Con is an overnight youth rally in Moncton, which we attended with 20 teens and 4 chaperones.

GRAD SUNDAY

In June, we celebrated the achievements of 3 grade six grads, 7 high school grads and 6 post-secondary grads.

Sunday kids program is led by Pastor Hannah. With the assistance of 10 volunteers (A/V, small group, leaders, helpers), we made our way through several books of the Bible with videos, games, cra s, discussion and prayer. We spent time getting to know our 40 elementary-aged kids, and taught them more about Jesus’ love for them.

NEXT CONFERENCE

We gave out family activity bags to 32 households at Christmastime. These resources help families with discipleship at home during special times of the year, like Advent.

In the fall of 2023 Immanuel became the new host of the long standing GEMS Girls Program. We began the year with 35 girls registered for the bi-monthly program, led by the coordinator and nine other volunteers. This program is largely focused on relationship building, faith building, and cra s.

YOUTH GROUP

Tuesdays have been a highlight of the week for teens, starting with our a er school drop-in, followed by youth band practice and Youth Group. We have come to know 80 teens this past year, many are now regulars on Tuesday night and continue to bring friends. Youth Group is led by Pastor Hannah with the help of 10 volunteers. We started the year in Youth Group following the Alpha Youth series, and a er summer started teaching on the book of John.

At the start of the year, we had a volunteer lead a small group of teens in cooking classes before youth group on Tuesdays. They spent 9 weeks learning to cook and eating many new foods.

Immanuel was the host location for the annual CBAC NEXT Conference, which offers training and resources for kids ministry leaders.

GEMS

SUMMER

David Robinson was hired by the church as our summer student, who worked with Pastor Hannah to build a fun summer at Immanuel.

Teens learned some carpentry skills while building picnic tables for the church.

“Stellar” VBS had 50 kids this year. It was loads of fun and we even raised 500 lbs of food for the foodbank.

The Athletes in Action Multi Sport Camp was a blast with 18 kids from the community joining for active fun and sport-themed Bible lessons.

Tidal Impact was in Saint John, NB for one week. We brought 12 teens to this outstanding week of local mission activities and youth rallies. We served a community BBQ, picked up garbage, helped with a huge food drive, and played tons of 9-square.

EL SALVADOR

Over the 2023 March break, 9 teens and 3 leaders went on a mission trip to El Salvador. There, we partnered with a local organization so we could assist with building latrines. We got our hands dirty while we did a lot of digging and brick-laying. We also had the opportunity to meet many local people, play with kids, and swim in the ocean. Even though it was only a week-long trip, the impact on us was immeasurable. And we could see the tangible results of our hard work.

Greetings from Camp Pagweak! Camp truly is an amazing ministry! It allows God to touch lives with the gospel, some who have never heard it before, and some who keep coming back each year to learn more about Jesus. I believe this is our main purpose, but because of that I also see our impact being just as significant in the lives of our leaders, our staff, as I watch them grow each summer. At times I think that we see camp ministry as just touching our young camper lives with the good news of our saviour Jesus, and don’t fully recognize that by allowing our teens and young adults to be a front row active participant in this ministry we are growing them into solid young leaders in their school, our churches and our communities.

2023 just like any year had it’s struggles but more importantly it also had it’s success and high points.

Again this past June we were able to host elementary school groups in June and I believe we will continue to do so each and every year in the future. This allows us to 1) give elementary students a day outdoors to celebrate their year together, and 2) expose them to our little piece of paradise and invite them to return for a week in the summer (which many do). If you live in the area between Amherst and Wallace along the north shore and/or have children or grandchildren attending schools there in grades 2-5, I would encourage you to speak to their teachers and suggest they consider celebrating their year together with a day in June at Camp Pagweak. We were able to host our annual Celebration Sunday in June again this year and we did change it up a bit as planned. We had the first hour of that a ernoon available for young people to come and experience some of the activities that we offer during the summer and at the same time our staff offered tours of the facility and the various changes over the past few years to those that were too old to go rock climbing, or shoot arrows, or go biking on our bike course. It was really neat to see how this new format worked as we saw families coming out to check us out before they send us their children later in the summer, and others got to see how camp has really changed over the past few years and is offering more activities each and every year.

I was concerned about our staff situation this year as the summer approached and even as it began as we had a number of staff return but a great number of those staff returning were moving upward in their responsibilities and assuming new roles in our ministry and then there were a bunch of staff including volunteers who had never worked at camp before.

orienteering. This was made possible as Kevin Nix, an orienteering specialist living minutes from camp, came over and trained the staff on how to lead an activity in orienteering and then donated the equipment needed for the entire summer!

for most of the summer had me worried about the struggles we might face together. A er a few weeks I was pleasantly surprised as God did amazing things in these lives and each one that He called to be a part of this ministry stepped up in amazing ways, both big and small, and grew immensely as individuals and as a unified team. What a blessing to watch and be a part of!

In 2023 we switched to an online registration system called CampBrain, specifically designed for camps and then tailored by us just for Camp Pagweak. It was a great success and almost all registrations were completed online with barely a hiccup. This system also will allow us to communicate better with campers as we enter into 2024 and also track our registrations year over year.

Again, we were blessed with your donations/allotments but also grants from both the provincial and federal governments, Cumberland County, the Canadian Baptist Women, the Atlantic Baptist Foundation and a few generous donations above and beyond from a couple of our supporting churches.

I have enjoyed thoroughly my time as the director of Camp Pagweak. It has been a dream of mine to be a camp director, and the Lord allowed me to realize that dream for which I am truly blessed. Part of the vision I came to the board with 5 years ago, was to develop our programs and our facility to get us to a point where we would be ready to consider a full time YEAR ROUND director and so that is what the board wishes to examine together now, as they enter into a long range planning process. As you may also know, I am stepping aside. Five years ago I agreed to be your camp director for at least 3 years, and I have been blessed to have that role for 5 years but I feel it is the right time for me to step away and allow someone else to take our camp to newer and higher levels. Thank you for your support over the past 5 years, it has been greatly appreciated.

Upgrades to camp this summer included a 9 hole mini-golf course overlooking the beautiful Pugwash harbour, replacing the donated pews from Covid times in our outdoor worship center with new pews made from pressure treated wood (that should last for years), new soccer nets, and work began on painting our Worship Center. Of course the weather played a role again this year in our camp as hurricane Lee came and went and le it’s mark. We didn’t have much damage to buildings but the damage we did see exposed the need to have a number of cabin roofs redone with metal roofing, and the electrical system in the upper field going to the cabins there replaced with an underground system. Fortunately, our insurance policy covered a majority of this for which we are extremely grateful. As well, our new “retractable” stairs to the beach were installed, worked great over the summer, then were pulled up (before Lee) and laid on the lawn for the winter so that we won’t lose them in the upcoming spring.

Summer camp was again a huge success as we hosted around 330 campers over our 7 weeks of camping, including a short week around the August holiday and a week of day camp. Each year the Lord supplies us with amazing camp pastors who bless the campers and staff with their teaching. During our 7 weeks of camp we had 7 campers ask Jesus into their lives as their personal Saviour and we had the privilege to baptize 2 individuals during the last week of the summer, one a long time camper and the other one of our junior cabin leaders. We also added a new activity to our growing list of opportunities for campers to choose from each day,

Due to the amount of work that had to be done this past spring as a result of Hurricane Lee, the work on the renovation of the directors house did not receive the attention we had hoped for this year. We did install a mini-split to heat and cool the upstairs of the house more efficiently and also cut down on our energy costs. The kitchen was completed, the floors in the upstairs bedrooms were redone and painting of the upstairs rooms is partially completed. The next steps of this renovation will be considered as part of our long range planning.

None of this would have been possible without the financial and prayer support of you and your church. Time and time again visitors to camp say to me that Pagweak has an amazing peaceful atmosphere that isn’t as clear or evident at other camps they know of. Why is that the case?

Because of your prayers is my belief. So please continue to pray for our camp through this year, and especially at this time as we are beginning the staff hiring process. I imagine most positions will be filled by the staff from last summer who have indicated they can hardly wait to apply and get back to camp for another summer of amazing ministry on behalf of their Saviour!
