The purpose of the IPA (Immaculate Parents Association) is to support school events and activities throughout the year in partnership with the parents, staff and administration. Parent volunteers contribute their time to helping with the Honors Mass receptions, Grandparent and Special Persons Day, Junior Ring Ceremony, Senior Breakfast, Teacher & Student Appreciation Day, and school fundraising events.
The School Advisory Board represents the institution of the Diocese of Bridgeport and is under the authority of the Office of Education of the Diocese of Bridgeport. The purpose of the School Advisory Board is to provide leadership to foster an environment which provides underlying Catholic values, long term strategic planning, and financial stability.

Mustang All Sports Club The Mustang All Sports Club’s (MASC) mission is to provide an opportunity for parents to focus on the needs of student-athletes and school athletic teams. Student athletes and parents contribute time to raise funds for specific athletic projects such as a new scoreboard, field upgrades, new athletic storage shed and hosting events, organizing and selling snacks/food at home games.

Meeting the Challenge
The rich history of Immaculate High School began with a conviction to seek the truth in all things, but seeking the truth in all things is not an easy task. Social perspectives continue to change, requiring us to have patience and humility so that we may recognize the gifts that God has bestowed us. High school is a stressful time. It is a time when students find out who they are and what they believe in. As Catholic school educators and leaders, we teach our students to face the challenges of social adversity and injustices. Students are encouraged to rely on their faith, particularly when trying to feel connected in a society that conflicts with their emotional, moral mettle. We have been extremely fortunate to have an extraordinary support team for our students outside the

classroom. Our school Chaplain has been instrumental in guiding students with their interest in forming their faith as well as encouraging participation in the sacraments. Our Dean of Student Affairs has mentored students to become positive social leaders. The counseling department spends endless hours assisting students with their academic needs while our school therapist provides emotional and personal support. In addition, our coaches and special program advisors continuously encourage and validate the efforts, talents and successes of our students. Students also benefit from the Peers Assisting Student Success Program (PASS), a peer mentoring program. PASS pairs upperclassmen with underclassmen to help them achieve better academic and/or social success, and helps students transition to Immaculate including
making friends, managing time, learning study skills and participating in the community and classroom. Students in the National Honor Society volunteer to tutor their peers as needed.
It’s All About Collaboration
So how do we accomplish creating a culture of academic excellence to support a student’s life journey? First of all, we believe in our students so that they believe in themselves. We encourage students to roll-up their sleeves, reject limitations, seek possibilities, be creative, be prayerful and support each other along the way. It is our goal to work together to develop the whole student. They are our present and our future. We listen to our students and witness how they embrace learning. We also listen when our graduates meet with us and share with us how we can better prepare current students for
college and beyond. To guarantee that students are prepared academically for college, careers and are provided classes that speak to their interests, Immaculate High School has added several academic courses of study for the 2017-18 school year and beyond. New courses include World Religions, Creative Writing, Shakespeare and Drama, Modern World History, International Relations, Principles of Economics, Introduction to Engineering Design, Writer’s Workshop, and Senior Seminar which is a combined Personal Finance and Health course. Beginning in 2017-18 we will be introducing a rotating-drop course schedule. The purpose of this schedule is to allow students to obtain a deeper understanding of a more focused curriculum. This student-centered approach will allow students to concentrate on six of
Your generous support and the efforts of our extremely dedicated School Advisory Board, allowed us to continue to grow our student programs and to pursue improving our infrastructure prior to the beginning of the 2016-17 school year. Former Chairman Tony Rizzo along with school board leaders Gerry Hatcher, Mike Mazzucco, Tony Cirone and Jim Arconti combined the professional expertise of their committees to assist the school administration with replacing the 50-year old roof, boiler and lighting fixtures as well as renovating the physics laboratory. The school also partnered with C-PACE to afford adding solar panels to the roof. The complete project cost $700,000 but, as projected, we have already realized significant energy efficient savings in our school operating budget. Because of you, the future of our students is bright. Thank you for partnering with us as we continue to pursue our vision and our mission to provide every student an opportunity to seek the truth and to be successful beyond their years at Immaculate High School.§

A STORY OF PERSERVERANCE AND FAITH
Betsy Murphy taught Biology and
Chemistry at Immaculate for 25 years before retiring in June 2015. The first thing she did was plan for a five-month,1,935 mile hike along the majority of the Pacific Crest Trail from California to Canada with her husband John. The planning included cooking and dehydrating

different ecosystems than those found in the East.
nutritious meals and shipping them to strategic establishments along their route, identifying “Trail Angels” that would provide a place to clean up and sleep on occasion and studying the conditions on the terrain. The most important aspects of this kind of adventure is knowing how
to overcome obstacles, knowing and accepting your limitations. One must respect the rules of the trail, revere nature and God’s creatures and show great responsibility for self-preservation and for others. The Murphy’s began their journey in Campo, California and hoped to hike the entire 2,650 miles to British Columbia, Canada. But forest fires, heat and snow levels in the Sierra mountains forced them to revise plans and skip parts of the trail. Even so, the Murphys faced intense heat, ice storms and other conditions that at times made their dream hike very difficult. But they continued on, knowing that there would be much more good than bad taken out of this journey, such as the Trail Angels that shared their homes and comforts with them and left water supplies throughout the trail, the other interesting hikers they met who came from around the world, and the gorgeous landscapes and
Mrs. Murphy was able to share her stories of perseverance and faith to another generation of Immaculate students when she came back for the 2016-17 school year to temporarily teach again. Mrs. Murphy, through her stories and photos, was also able to enlighten students that all things can be done with the Grace of God and how the kindness of strangers is so important. She also taught them about determination, as she and her husband plan to go back and finish the part of the trail they had to skip before hiking the Appalachian trail and hiking/biking their way through Ireland and Scotland. §

Dan Buckley, a religion teacher at
IHS, believes that Immaculate provides a great Catholic values-based academic opportunity for not only area students, but also for those from afar. In an effort to share all that Immaculate has to offer the world, he travelled to China in February 2016 as an ambassador of Immaculate’s International Student Program. He traveled to Beijing, Hongzhou, Chengdu and Shanghai to meet potential students and their families and extol the virtues of a Catholic education in

Tremendous travel distances, different cultures and foods and foreign languages do not make a mission like that easy, but Mr. Buckley said that he found all the people to be warm and friendly. The trip gave him tremendous insight into how Immaculate’s International Students must feel. “I have gained a much better appreciation of the adjustments and challenges faced by our students from China and elsewhere,” he said. According to
Mr. Buckley, even though there is a prevalence of Western culture in China, it feels “almost familiar and yet different….it can be unsettling, and I can imagine how the students feel when they come here,” he said. “I certainly learned a lot; it has helped me with understanding the International students’ needs here at Immaculate,” Mr. Buckley added, noting that Immaculate also has a strong International Student Program to help students adjust, thrive and receive an outstanding Catholic college-preparatory education. § Inside the Forbidden City, China
Our International Program
Immaculate High School’s
International Program recruits students from overseas who want to receive an educational and overall experience that they might not be able to find elsewhere. Parents send their children here from half-way across the world because they are guaranteed that Immaculate will provide an excellent collegepreparatory education while also nurturing the moral, intellectual, physical and spiritual growth of the student. They are able to be creative and develop leadership skills, things
they might not easily be able to do elsewhere. In 2016 the program held its first New Student Orientation Camp for incoming international students. The camp allowed students to meet new friends and the IHS staff and learn about the many opportunities here, including our 40 plus clubs and activities and 32 sports teams, and visit exciting attractions in the tri-state area. The camp helped guarantee a successful transition to their new school and host country. The International Student Program also provides students with an academic counselor, college counseling and a full-time academic support teacher dedicated to their needs. Student Ambassadors serve as peer mentors, and the International Club provides activities for social and cultural exchange, such as hosting cultural celebrations, going on field trips and choosing a charity to sponsor to encourage awareness of others. §

Valley Coalition Against Substance Abuse and meets with other professionals to discuss trends and ways to help students in the battle against substance abuse. Ms. Iadarola also writes a monthly article for all parents about relevant issues affecting youth.
Caring for the Whole Student
To assist students with stress,
mental health and development needs, Immaculate partnered with a generous donor through Catholic Charities. Today, the program is supported through the school budget and a grant from the DERX Foundation. The program is coordinated by Sara Iadarola LPC, “Students are referred to me by teachers, parents and peers. In the first year, working part-time, I met regularly with 21 students, and I started an after-school stress management group,” Ms. Iadarola noted. She also held a parent workshop called “Surviving the Teenage Years.” Thanks again to the generous donor, Ms. Iadarola became full-time, allowing her to meet with nearly 80 students. She also started a transfer group for students who transferred into Immaculate, as well as a grief group.

I encourage students to use their strengths and accept their weaknesses.” “Students come to therapy for help with anxiety, depression, grief, parent-child relational issues, self-esteem, stress management and numerous other mental health issues,” Ms. Iadarola said. “Often times, they start coming once a week or more, and then we then spread out their sessions as time passes and their issues become less severe,” she explained. Ms. Iadarola also coordinates Immaculate’s Awareness Program. She is a member of the Housatonic
“Students feel comfortable in my office because it is a safe space for them to talk about life and life’s challenges. They know sessions are confidential; they understand that they will be assisted in finding solutions or learning acceptance for issues that have no solutions,” Ms. Iadarola said. “Students are told that my office is not a place where they will find answers for every problem -- I help students find ways to face, cope with and manage numerous aspects of life. I encourage students to use their strengths and accept their weaknesses,” she said. Ms. Iadarola feels that there are many positives to IHS placing value on the work she does. “I do believe we are starting to break down the stigma about therapy and mental health, and the students feel blessed for having a place to be heard and helped,” she noted.§
Connecticut Council of Alcoholism to parents, discussed the development of the adolescent brain, protective factors and the role they play in substance abuse prevention as well as factors that put youth at risk for substance abuse. Young people who learn about the risks of drugs and alcohol from their parents are up to 50 percent less likely to use than those who do not.
Taking care of the whole student

While academics is a top priority, there are other aspects of students’ well-being that must be addressed and nurtured, especially with the drug epidemic reaching epic levels in our communities. Immaculate High School offers programs that help students understand the dangers and consequences of using drugs and alcohol, driving drunk and other dangerous activities. During the 2016-17 school year, Immaculate sponsored three assemblies as part of its Awareness Program.

Immaculate then presented Choices Matter, which featured national keynote speaker Chris Sandy, who discussed the terrible impact drinking and driving had on him: he killed two people in a car accident and then served time in jail. To receive the Citizenship Award honorees must have actively participated in school and community service, shown an understanding and appreciation of civic responsibility, exhibited strength of character and the courage to do what is right as well as a positive attitude toward classmates, school and the community; and promoted citizenship within the school and/or the community through various activities.
hree Immaculate students were honored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for scoring exceptionally high in the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT) 2017 Program. Nicole DiMauro ‘17 was named a Semifinalist, one of the highest-scoring entrants in each state and representing less than one percent of each state’s high school seniors. Amy Bohling ‘17 and Lauren Cirone ‘17 were both Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

second and third place in the Connecticut Open Division Gold Tier State Round competition, as well as earning a first-place Silver Tier State Round Award for the CyberPatriot IX challenge. This is Immaculate’s second year in a row securing the State Championship title. The team also competed in the regional competition on the Gold and Silver Tier level; Immaculate took 4th place in the Northeast regional round. She comes to Immaculate with a degree in Art from the College of New Rochelle and was the substitute art teacher at St. Rose School for many years. She has also worked in textile arts designing needlepoint canvases and teaching knitting.

In coming years, Mrs. Quinn hopes to do some collaborative lessons with teachers from other disciplines such as science or social studies, to let students experience art in
different ways. “I may be able to create a kinetic mobile that works but do I understand why it does what it does?” she noted. Mrs. Quinn and fellow art teacher Samantha Kohler created the Immaculate High School Arts in the Park art show which had its second year in May 2017. Every art student knows that all their work over the course of the year will displayed at Arts in the Park. The result is over 1,000 pieces, beautifully displayed in the gymnasium, accompanied by activities for patrons and musical presentations by Immaculate instrumental groups. It’s a wonderful community event and very motivating for the art students. Samantha Kohler teaches Graphic Arts I and II and AP Art & Portfolio. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design and a BS in Art Education with a minor in Illustration from Miami University in Ohio as well as a MA
in Cognitive Learning from Sacred Heart University. Graphic Arts is a cross-curricular class, melding art, technology and business. Students use computer programs to create and execute designs. “What’s neat about graphic design is that you don’t have to be able to draw to exercise your creativity,” said Mrs. Kohler. “It’s a lot of fun to see students get the results they were looking for in their work.” The department has a commercial sticker machine, a heat press and a 3-D printer as well. This spring, the class offered personalized IHS Class
of 2017 graduation congratulations signs for purchase and designed field day t-shirts for St. Gregory the Great School. By 2018-2019, the goal is to have a full-fledged business that can fulfill design orders from the public, giving students the opportunity to experience not only the creative side but also the business side of graphic arts. “AP Art & Portfolio is really exciting to teach,” says Mrs. Kohler.
The class enables students to pursue their own interests in art. They create their own curriculum, with projects centered on a particular medium, subject or theme, and she helps them follow it. Some of the students are preparing their portfolios based on college-entrance requirements and those working for AP credit must finish 29 pieces. “I love watching what they can produce,” she said with a smile.§
In her Introduction to Art class students learn about all aspects of art from media to terminology to the process of creating a work of art. This broad approach gives students the foundational understanding and the vocabulary to discuss and critique their own art and that of

“A Snowy Day in Canada” Linus Jia ‘17
A.J. Vitiello ‘18 won a National Gold Medal in Flash Fiction from the 2017 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in March for his short story “The Gospel According to Steve Harvey” which depicts how a teenage girl’s relationship with her grandmother is affected by Alzheimer’s disease. A.J.’s flash fiction short story “Home,” a story about a homeless/immigrant teenager witnessing the terrorist attacks on September 11, won an Honorable Mention in the NY to CT region of the competition. The first five chapters of his novel “Field Mouse” won a National Silver Medal in the Novel Writing category of the 2016 competition. Additionally, his horror story “Masks” won a Silver Key in the Hudson to Housatonic region of the 2016 competition.
Linus Jia ‘17, David Mercier ‘18, Krystal Zhang ‘20, Veronica Vodola ‘19 and Colleen McCann ‘19 were named winners in the Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards. David won a Gold Key for his design of the IHS production “Hamlet” playbook cover and Linus won a Silver Key award for his painting “A Snowy Day in Canada.” Colleen and Veronica were honored for their sculptures “Katniss’ and “Singin’ in the Rain” respectively and Krystal was honored for her painting “Cityscape;” all three won Honorable Mentions. 19
Broadening Musical Opportunities
This year Niall Reynolds became
the first full time instrumental music teacher in the school’s history. He brings with him a lifelong love of music, fostered through the music programs offered in his elementary and high schools. His first instrument was the clarinet, followed by saxophone for jazz ensemble and drums in a rock band. “As a high school senior, I found myself in my last year of marching band, wanting it to keep going,” Mr. Reynolds said. So he continued into a five-year program at UCONN,

earning a BA in music, a BS in education and a masters in curriculum and instruction. Mr. Reynolds joined Immaculate in 2015 as part-time concert band teacher, which also included teaching the guitar ensemble (an outgrowth of concert band instituted by predecessor Julie Sorcek to accommodate the large number of guitar playing students), and digital sound design. In 2016 the position became full-time due to the addition of two courses and two clubs, with the intention of building a college-prep music program. He is enthusiastic about the growth. “I want this to be a music community where prospective students will come because of the music opportunities here,” said Mr. Reynolds. New offerings this year are Beginning Piano (to be followed in subsequent years with Intermediate and Advanced piano courses), a general music elective taught on
Pep Band and Recording Club, two extracurricular offerings, got their start this year too. Pep Band has developed a repertoire of about seven “spirited” songs (think Eye of the Tiger and We Will Rock You) to play at games. This year they graced two football games and hope to do more next year. Recording club has completed one project: learning to use the recording studio. The club also hopes to expand its accomplishments next year.
electric keyboards in a piano lab, and Music Theory, an honors course where students who have a deeper interest in music can learn the basics of how music works and try their hand at composition. “The most gratifying experience I had this year was listenin to the amazing pieces the students in Music Theory composed. They created at a higher level than I expected,” he related.
“We want to make optimal use of the recording studio, which was a large investment for the school,” said Mr. Reynolds. In addition to the new courses, longstanding concert band and guitar ensemble are stepping it up a notch too with a broadening of the music they work on to include modern, more familiar pieces such as the Pirates of the Caribbean theme played by the band at this year’s Cabaret. Guitar Ensemble is branching out and becoming more independent in learning and arranging their music.
Visions for the future include getting a music technology curriculum up and running. Another goal is to establish a jazz ensemble or group. Notable student accomplishments in instrumental music this year were Mary Johnson’19, violin, and Elizabeth Maker ’18, clarinet, successfully auditioning for the 2017 CMEA Western Regional Music Festival. Elizabeth was also invited to audition for the All-State Music Festival based on her performance at her western region audition. §

Celebrating Music in our Schools Month

Murtha ‘07, Choral teacher and the Tri-M Music Honor Society celebrated March is Music in Our Schools Month by hosting various activities that allowed everyone to appreciate and enjoy the sound of music and raised funds for the Give A Note Foundation, which provides grants for music education to less fortunate schools. They promoted music throughout the school through Friday morning sing-a-longs, musical performances, karaoke during lunch periods, posting on social media about arts within the school and providing music facts and trivia during morning announcements. Big events included hosting the Cabaret and a special Coffee House for local parochial school students, and playing acoustic music during the IHS blood drive.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
Immaculate High School’s Spring 2017 Musical Fiddler on the Roof, produced and performed by IHS’ award-winning Fine Arts Department, won three Halo awards, including the esteemed Best Classical Musical award. The Halo awards are presented by Seven Angels Theatre and are the most prestigious high school theater awards event in the State. The IHS production also took top honors in the Best Dancing and the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Classical Musical categories: Logan Monaco ‘17. Jillian Fredette ‘17 received a Dance Molinari dance scholarship based on the director’s nomination. IHS also won the Outstanding Lobby Design at the CT High School Musical Theater Awards for Fiddler on the Roof, which successfully depicted a museum of Jewish culture.

The Drama Club put up another fantastic production this fall, Hamlet. They chose a 1940’s New York City film noir style setting. The tragedy unfolded in a swanky world of tuxedos and evening gowns, but was no less horrifying as Hamlet’s grief and mad quest for revenge over the killing of his father resulted in death and despair throughout the court. Audiences loved it and the show earned two Seven Angel’s Theater Halo Award nominations, Giovanni Fardella for Best Actor Performing in a Classical Play as Hamlet and A.J. Vitiello ‘18 for Best Supporting Actor Performing in a Play as Polonius.

Coach Plumb started teaching and Honoring Integrity, Dedication and Leadership coaching at Immaculate High School

in 1983. He coached freshman boys basketball for most of those years, and served briefly as coach or assistant coach for the junior varsity and varsity teams. Coach Plumb was also Athletic Director for five years and a football coach for 14 years (for freshman and as a varsity assistant and head coach).
Robert Plumb has graced the
halls of Immaculate for over three decades, sharing his passion, inspiration and devotion with hundreds of students. Coach “Bobby” Plumb retired from coaching at Immaculate in December 2016 after 33 years, and to honor all that he is to and all that he has done for Immaculate, the school’s gymnasium was officially christened The Robert “Bobby” Plumb Gymnasium (or “Plumbnasium” for short).

The Mustang was chosen as a school mascot because at the time the Ford Mustang was so popular.
In 2011, Coach Plumb was inducted into the Immaculate High School Athletic Hall of Fame. While he is retiring from coaching, he will remain at IHS as a physical education teacher. Serious about coaching IHS student-athletes to achieve their fullest potential, Coach Plumb notes that while he is very competitive, it wasn’t always about winning. “The most important things to teach students to help them succeed is to have respect for themselves and others, and to appreciate the things in life you have and don’t complain but work for the things you don’t have,” Coach Plumb reflected. “Probably one of the most important things is listen twice as much as you speak, which is why God gave us two ears and only one mouth. Lastly be disciplined, develop a great work ethic and do things with a good attitude,” he said. Coach Plumb was always passionate
and loyal to the programs and players he has coached during his three-plus decades at Immaculate High School. According to the seasoned coach, it wasn’t hard. “When you love the place you work at, the job you have and the people you work with, it’s never considered ‘work,’ it’s more of a passion,” he said. “Show your students that you respect and care for them more than just as a student or an athlete,” Coach Plumb stressed.
He said he feels incredibly honored to have the the Immaculate gymnasium named for him. “The thing that inspires me are former teachers and coaches I had as well as the tremendous faculty and quality of students always around me. I am blessed, proud and thankful to be a member of this tremendous school and the IHS community,” Coach Plumb noted. Immaculate High School is incredibly honored, blessed and proud to have him.§

It was a great competition for personal achievements for the IHS Mustang student-athletes: Christian Morris ‘17 won the 600 meters, and Sean Fahey ‘17 won the long jump and placed third in the 300. Morris and Fahey teamed with Dominick Curra ‘18 and Matt Christe ‘19 to win the 4x400 relay, and the foursome of Connor McNerney ‘18, Patrick Cropsey ‘18, Sean Connolly ‘18 and Christe finished second in the 4x800 relay.

A Year of Firsts
One of the Immaculate athletic
programs experiencing the greatest success in 2016-17 is the Cross Country (XC) and Track program. The program had a slow start but painstakingly developed into a powerhouse sport, fueled by determination, hard work, true grit and confidence. Like the little train that thought it could get up the hill, the Mustang runners always believed that with unfaltering effort and commitment they could reach their personal goals. As a result, this year’s XC and indoor and outdoor track seasons were a time of firsts and great success for all of the Immaculate runners. Working harder than ever and forming more cohesive teams allowed them to win elusive State titles and break over 25 school and personal best records. In a first for the school, the boys indoor track team won the CIAC-Class S State Title as well as the SWC Conference, with the lady Mustangs coming in second for the girls meet. It all

started with the girls cross country team winning the Class SS State Championship and being the first Immaculate XC team to ever qualify as a whole team to run at the New England Championships and to ever place in the top six in the State Open. Brian Hayes is head coach for all of Immaculate’s XC and indoor and outdoor track teams. He theorizes that commitment to the sport and each other is why they ran their way to glory. “This year our teams have shown their outstanding abilities in all three seasons, and I think what makes our program successful is that although we are small in numbers, we have many student-athletes committed to participating in at least two seasons -- this builds a great bond among the athletes that helps to build a winning tradition,” he said. Coach Hayes took on the challenge of coaching IHS’ cross country program in 2004 and then added outdoor track a year later, and in 2012 he began coaching indoor track. His partner coaches are Pete
Dittmar for XC and outdoor track, Carlo Pascuzzi for indoor and outdoor track and Tim Dunn for outdoor track. Coach Hayes’ biggest challenge to revamping the program was convincing the student-athletes to participate in more than one season as he believes each season is truly different and are very important building blocks for each other. Luckily, and wisely, the runners heard his message. Their hard work and commitment has paid off multiple times, as the girls cross country team has won
States four out of the last five years. The team has also been in the top ten of all teams statewide for three of those years and this year, after placing second in the SWC Championship meet and winning the Class SS Championship, qualified for the first time in school history for the prestigious New England Championships as a team by being in the top six of all girls teams at #5. The lady Mustangs were only the second Class S girls team to ever achieve that accomplishment. To recognize their amazing success, Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton honored them at City Hall and proclaimed December 7, 2017 as “Immaculate High School Girls Cross Country Day.”
faster runners and stronger teams. This was evident when the boys indoor track team won both the SWC and Class S Championships, “a very hard feat,” according to Coach Hayes, a Danbury Police Officer. It was the first time the team was declared champions in school history. Even prior to this huge win were other victories. “We have sent runners to the New Englands every year since 2006, one of the few Mustang athletic teams to ever compete there,” he noted. And this school year relay teams and individual athletes broke personal best and school records allowing them to come out on top. These are exceptional accomplishments for any high school athletic program. With a special team of dedicated and motivated coaches and studentathletes, a solid, winning program
emerged from an after-school activity. But no one has hung up their running shoes yet and everyone is more determined than ever to take the teams to the next level. Coach Hayes says that his goal for Immaculate High School’s XC and track program is to become recognized as a program that can successfully compete with any team, regardless of school size. He believes the boys and girls teams are very close to that dream. “My personal goal for both the girls and boys teams would be for them to win a State championship and place in the top three in New Englands in the same year,” he said. With focused, dedicated student-athletes, strong, determined coaching and support from the entire Immaculate family, that goal could happen in the near future. §
“The girls were especially successful in cross country this year because they have a tradition to uphold and expect to do well. The boys finally caught up because they were tired of being number two to the girls,” Coach Hayes joked. He said he sees a growing trend where the student-athletes choose running as their primary sport, which makes for

ATHLETIC AWARDS IHS Field Hockey players Laura Mezzetta ‘17, Caroline Wax ‘18, Meghan Coyle ‘18 and Isabella Cipollone ‘18 were named to the Keith Waldman Optimal Performance Associates/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) High School National Academic Squad.
In November 2016, Immaculate High School received the prestigious CIAC Michaels Achievement Cup for the 2015-16 school year, which recognizes Immaculate’s outstanding achievement as an overall athletic program. Only 15 high school athletic programs received the award, which honors exemplary programs for their strength in sportsmanship, participation, athletic scholarship, athletic personnel, equity, chemical-free initiatives and athletic achievement. Will Hatcher ‘17 was a recipient of a Colonial Football Board of Officials Scholar-Athlete Scholarship. The scholarship was based on leadership, sportsmanship, athletic and academic merit. Will, a three-year starter for ATI football, was named First Team All Conference in the Constitution Conference. He was also named First Team Constitution State Conference and received a scholarship from the National Football Foundation Gerry McDougall Memorial scholarship fund, and was the scholar athlete awardee by them as well. 30 Respect
Diana Kirkman and David Bono, both ‘17, were honored by the South-West Conference for their good character and for having at least a B average cumulative GPA after seven semesters, and for being active in school and community and “displaying the leadership qualities that set them apart from their classmates.”
Seniors Danielle Marcone and Colm Doherty were recognized by the CAS-CIAC the Scholar Athlete program, for being high school senior student-athletes whose “academic and athletic careers have been exemplary, whose personal standards and achievement are a model to others, and who possess high levels of integrity, self-discipline and courage.” Danielle was also named a Hearst Connecticut Media Girls Indoor Track and Field All Star. At the annual Breakfast of Champions the Diocese of Bridgeport recognized Immaculate High School seniors Danielle Marcone, Diana Kirkman, Kayla Lanza, Jillian Pruner, Christian Morris and Sean Fahey for excelling in academics, athletic achievement and above all striving to live a lifestyle that exemplifies Gospel values. Jillian received the St. Thomas Aquinas Award. The St. Thomas Aquinas award is presented to students in their last year of elementary or high school who have demonstrated academic accomplishment and also “exemplify the Gospel Values we are called to in our Catholic faith through service to others and Christ-like behavior.” The St. Sebastian Award was awarded to Diana and Danielle for for girls cross country, to Kayla for girls soccer and to Sean and Christian for boys indoor track. The St. Sebastian Award is awarded to high school seniors who have not only achieved academic distinction but have shown leadership as the captain of an athletic team that won at the State level during this academic year.

Tom Mertens, Physics teacher,
proves that many people often have hidden talents and unique stories to tell if only asked, and that students can choose one career and travel a diverse, unexpected yet exciting path their whole lives. Mr. Mertens has taught at Immaculate High School since 2007, originally teaching both Algebra and Honors Physics and then in 2008 all the Physics classes including Honors and AP. Prior to joining Immaculate High School, Mr. Mertens, a retired Army Colonel and Jump Master paratrooper, served our country for decades, including in air defense, and even worked on the Hubble Space Telescope and the Hexagon Satellite system after he left the full-time military for the Reserves. He particularly enjoys teaching in Immaculate’s new Physics Lab, constructed in 2016. “The new lab offers a wide range of opportunities, including additional white boards for student group work, open space

had many memorable experiences, his days flying rescue helicopters was the most rewarding. Two of Al’s closest friends, and IHS alumni, served as well. According to Al, Bob Wishtischin ‘80 served in the Air Force and retired as a colonel. John Lopes ‘80 went to West Point and later went on to fly helicopters in the Army. Ironically, Al and John attended flight school together.
“I thoroughly enjoy teaching Physics at a Catholic school, for it affords me the opportunity to infuse science with our beliefs and point out that religion and science are not opposite but complementary,” said Mr. Mertens. for demonstrations and modular seating for group interaction. Storage of lab equipment within each station simplifies setup and takedown of laboratory experiments, and a state-of-the-art projection system allows for multiple video presentations from different sources,” Mr. Mertens said, noting that as a result the students are doing more hands-on activities which should improve their understanding of physics principles. To further
strengthen the IHS science program, the Chemistry Labs were renovated in the summer of 2017.

Mr. Mertens is just one of the many IHS staff and alumni that served God and their country in the United States Armed forces. To date, dozens of students have gone on to serve in the military, reserves and Coast Guard.§
AL LUPENSKI ‘80
IHS alumnus, Al Lupenski is a
Brigadier General in the United States Air Force and resides in Alexandria, VA. He enlisted in the Air National Guard while in college and was commissioned in 1985. Al has spent most of his flying career in helicopters in New York, Alaska and Florida. While he has
Al shared, “My time at Immaculate was instrumental in giving me the tools I needed to be successful in my career and life in general. It is only second to my parents. The Air Force Core Values are ‘Integrity first, Service before self and Excellence in all we do.’ That is what Immaculate is all about. I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to attend Immaculate. I made lifelong friends and my experience there prepared me for my future.” Al came back to IHS in the fall of 2015 to join us for our 50th Anniversary celebration. He then graciously traveled back to Danbury in 2016 to join us as a guest speaker for our annual Career Day, sharing his journey in the military with our students. We are grateful to Al for his ongoing support of Immaculate High School, and especially for his service to our country. Al and countless other alumni who have served in the military embody our motto of, “Respect, Responsibility and Reverence”.

supporters came bright and early to the Amber Room Colonnade in Danbury on October 14, 2016 to support the Adopt-A-Mustang cause. Sister Clare Fitzgerald, SSND, was the keynote speaker and shared her experiences of visiting and working with Catholic school students of all ages and locations, as well as the need for kindness and justice more than ever in today’s world. She explained that a Catholic school education positively instills perseverance, humility, community service and strong faith, a mission that has a tremendous impact on today’s youth and our future.

Also addressing the attendees was Immaculate High School graduate Isaiah McCorkle ‘12, who spoke from the heart about how his scholarship allowed him to attend
IHS and live up to his full potential, securing the path to his future goals of earning advanced degrees in social work and ministry. During his speech Isaiah said that his mother wanted a better life for him and his brother, so without a plan or resources they came to Immaculate High School with high hopes; thanks to a similar fund the brothers were able to attend, succeed and achieve their dreams to make a difference in our world.

G ala At the Annual Spring Gala on
Saturday, April 1, 2017, Immaculate High School honored Kathleen Casey and Jennifer Rosenblum, and thanks to 320 guests and numerous sponsors and donors, “A Night of Magic and Intrigue” raised over $143,000 in total to support the school’s continued efforts to afford an opportunity for students to experience an excellent collegepreparatory program. The Gala was held at the Amber Room Colonnade in Danbury and featured a professional magic performance by IHS alumnus Tom Pesce ‘99 as well as dancing and fabulous silent and live auctions. Lucky guests “won” trips to Napa Valley and Disney, lobster bakes, gourmet barbecues, wine tastings, baskets full of prizes, signed sports memorabilia and more. A majority of the prizes were donated by IHS supporters. The winner of the $10,000 cash raffle prize was Terry Tortora of Newtown; raffle

ticket proceeds benefit programs for IHS students. Honored at the event for their community service, commitment to Catholic Education and devotion to Immaculate High School were Kathleen D. Casey and Jennifer E. Rosenblum. Kathleen D. Casey was the first female leader in education to receive the Nancy K. Dolan Leadership Award, an award in honor of Nancy Dolan, the first chairperson of the Immaculate High School Advisory Board and strong community leader committed to Catholic education and community service. Mrs. Casey’s leadership roles included service as the President of Immaculate High School from 2008 to 2014 and then as Associate Superintendent of Schools at the
Diocese of Bridgeport. Prior to joining IHS, she began her career in Catholic education at Holy Redeemer Catholic School in Alpharetta, Georgia and then at St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Fairfield. Jennifer E. Rosenblum received the Immaculate High School Distinguished Service Award which recognizes individuals who aid and support IHS and its young men and women. Recipients have served in or around the school community and have directly aided IHS students in striving to be the best they can be both in and out of school. Mrs. Rosenblum has made vast volunteer contributions to Immaculate High School, including serving as President of the Immaculate High School Parent Association (IPA) and as a member

Please join us for a great day of Golf as we support Immaculate High School. This is Immaculate High School’s second largest fundraiser and all proceeds benefit our students and school programs.

High School Golf Tournament was held on a beautiful day at Richter Park Golf Course on September 21, 2016. The sun was shining and a light breeze blowing as 128 golfers took to the tees and greens in support of Immaculate High School. Golfers included 36 alumni, 35 parents and parents of alumni, nine School Advisory Board members, seven faculty/staff and many friends of Immaculate. Judging by the smiles and laughter a grand time was had by all. Congratulations again to the Golden Tee Award recipients, Joe and Nushi Bischof. Many, many thanks to the sponsors, participants and volunteers whose support and assistance made the day possible. You make a real, positive difference for the students at Immaculate. The tournament raised over $43,000 this year. Special thanks to Ross Rizzo, who chaired the event for the fourth and final time this year, for his long and effective dedication to this event.

Joe Francomano ‘85 and his wife Lisa live in Blauvelt, NY with their three children. Their youngest, Eva, recently received her First Communion.

Shawn (Sullivan) Mayers ‘80, APLD, heads groundSwell Designs, an award-winning landscape design studio serving clients throughout southeastern New England. She is a graduate of the prestigious Landscape Institute of Harvard University and the Boston Architectural College. Mary Ellen Riddle ‘72 recently published Outer Banks Shipwrecks: Graveyard of the Atlantic, with Arcadia Publishing. The book is part of Arcadia’s Images of America Series. Mary Ellen is the Education Curator at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras, NC. She authored a number of guide books about the Outer Banks and writes an art column for the Virginian-Pilot’s Coast. Mary Ellen lives on Hatteras Island.
Jo-Anne (Tomanio) Price ‘66 of Ridgefield, CT and Bridget Murphy ‘66 of Lawrence, KS took a trip together this past spring to Holland. Agawam, MA City Councilor, Cecilia Calabrese ‘77 was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Municipal Association.

The Hearst Connecticut Media Group honored ten local nurses in May, including alumna Kathy LiVolsi ‘82. Kathy was nominated for the exceptional care she provides her patients at Stamford Hospital and her dedication to the nursing profession.
Rob O’Neil ‘91 is the Global Head of Marketing and Sales Operations for Mylan pharmaceutical company. He recently presented at employee town halls in several countries including Tokyo, Japan and St. Petersburg, Russia. Rob was one of the members of last fall’s 1991 reunion planning committee.
Joshua Critelli ‘00 was recently engaged to Alyssa Caravakis. Josh is the Owner and Operator of Critelli’s Auto Body in Danbury. Sarah (Merkel) Schiller ‘93 is the Director of Sales at LeChateau, an exclusive wedding and event venue reopening in South Salem, NY. Sarah is heading up the sales force behind the historic property, currently undergoing a $10M renovation and slated to reopen in October 2017. Joe King ‘96 and Jeff Ginty ‘96 were soaking in the sun in Venice Beach, FL this spring.

Andy Morgado ‘90 and his family will be moving from Illinois to Korea this summer. Andy will be the Chief of Staff for the 2nd Infantry Division headquartered at Camp Red Cloud in the city of Uiejonjbu, Republic of Korea. Thank you for your ongoing service Andy! John Barata ‘96 recently celebrated his third year as the CEO and President of the Beautiful Game Soccer Academy and his twelfth year as the Director of Coach and Player Development for Easton Soccer. He is currently working towards his NSCAA Master Coach Diploma,
Brendan Major ‘02 was recently spotted meeting with Anderson Cooper at the CNN studios in NYC. He has been meeting with influential people while launching his new startup.

Nick Fraticelli ‘01 has been the Head Coach of the girls track & field team at Danbury High School since 2014 and has coached track & field at DHS since 2006. He is also the Head Coach of the girls and boys cross country teams at New Fairfield High School. He and his wife are expecting their second child in September 2017.
Dr. Daniel Ring ‘07 graduated from Tufts School of Medicine in Boston in May 2017. He will begin his residency in June at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA. He is pictured with his brothers David ‘02 and Connor ‘11.
In June, 2017 Matt Mulvey ‘09 moved to Santiago to become the new Director of Chile’s first Irish dancing school, the Mulvey Rakos Academy. The academy, now fully owned and operated by Matt alone, currently has over 100 students enrolled in the program.

Katie Collins ‘10 is a First Lieutenant in the Army, currently serving in Fort Bragg, NC as a platoon leader. She was in the front seat of the Apache helicopter during the flyover of the 2016 Army-Navy game. In June 2017 Katie became engaged to Patrick Kneram.
Amy Loya ‘10 is a BioMedical PhD student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Recently her interdisciplinary team was recognized for the Best Paper Presentation titled “From Sports to Science: Using Basketball Analytics to Broaden the Appeal of Math and Science Among Youth.” The prize was $10,000 and a trip to the NBA summer league to present the work again to the entire NBA. There were over 200 submissions from established sports analytics groups. She is pictured here with NBA San Antonio Spurs player LaMarcus Aldridge at his basketball camp.
Danielle Bissonette ‘13 graduated magna cum laude from the honors program at Villanova University in May 2017 and will pursue her PhD in Counseling Psychology at the University of Tennessee in Fall 2017. Danielle said that she believes Immaculate definitely laid the foundation for a successful and fulfilling college experience, and that she is so grateful.
Merna Haddad ‘13 recently graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, and was recognized by the President of the college for her achievements and leadership at the graduation ceremony. When Wentworth hosted the National Forum of the American Institute of Architecture Students, Haddad worked as the Programming Director, organizing more than 80 different education sessions. She is continuing on at Wentworth in a five-year architecture program.
Ryan Preusse ‘14 is a member of the Iona Gaels baseball team and was recently named to the 2017 MAAC All-Academic Team. He has a 4.0 GPA in Physics at Iona College and his team went to the MAAC D1 Championship Game in Niagara Falls.
Meg Rudolf ‘15 was recently inducted as a member of the Xi Theta Chi Foreign Language Honor Society and Service Organization, Alpha Chapter at Roanoke College. Shane Raymond ’13 recently graduated from Syracuse University with a BS in Accounting and will pursue his MSA beginning August 2017 at Syracuse University. A FAMILY TRADITION Immaculate High School has become a tradition for many of our families. The Class of 2017 had 6 legacy families - students having one or more parents who graduated from Immaculate. These second generation students know that their parents wanted them to have the same gift of a Catholic secondary school education that they received as Mustangs. World Youth Day -- A Pilgrimage To Remember
Nearly twenty Immaculate High School students
participated in World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland in the summer of 2016. They were part of the Diocese of Bridgeport’s pilgrimage group which numbered over two hundred teens, young adults and chaperones. The group was accompanied by The Most Reverend Frank J. Caggiano, Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport, who also served a catechist at the World Youth Day meetings. Pre-WYD Activities Stateside and in Poland The group met about once a month for six months prior to departure not only to be advised on the administrative and practical preparation for the trip but also to begin the spiritual formation that would continue in Poland. Students were reminded that they were not on a vacation, but on a pilgrimage. The group arrived in Poland five days before the opening of World Youth Day. These days were spent visiting many historical/spiritual sites in Poland including Jasna Gora monastery in Czestochowa, where the miraculous Black Madonna painting resides. There they attended Mass and saw a gate covered in crutches and other aids left behind by those experiencing a cure. The group then visited the Auschwitz Concentration Camp and the Basilica for Divine Mercy in Krakow, the final resting place of Saint Faustina who received the messages of Divine Mercy through apparitions of Jesus. The pilgrims also participated in catechesis, retreats, Mass, Adoration and Reconciliation. World Youth Day Begins On Tuesday night, Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, Archbishop of Krakow and long-time personal aide to Saint John Paul II, opened World Youth Day with a Mass at Błonia Park, which was followed by a praise and worship concert featuring musicians from around the world. On the altar were relics of Saints Faustina and John Paul II, who spent much of his adult life in Krakow before being elected Pope and who inaugurated the first World Youth Day. Waiting for Pope’s Motorcade A particularly thrilling moment for some members of the group occurred when they decided to find a spot at the barricade along His Holiness Pope Francis’ route to his official arrival for the Wednesday prayer service, rather than try to get into Błonia Park early. REVERENCE SPIRITUAL LIFE
Every school has “school spirit,”
which is evident at athletic and other competitions, school events and in the cafeteria and the hallways -- but in addition a Catholic school has a special kind of spirit – the spirit of God, inherent in every endeavor. At Immaculate High School spirituality is seen in how everyone treats each other, how the school engages with athletic and other challenges and how the entire student body, faculty and staff shares the love of God out in the world. Chaplain Deacon Jeff Font makes sacramental and devotional opportunities available to students to foster the growth of faith and give grace. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is held in the chapel daily during the lunch period when students are free to stop by and spend a few minutes with our Lord. Many students find this to be a calming interlude in their busy day. The Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is offered every Friday immediately following dismissal, and during the school day for holy days of obligation and some holidays. A 60 Reverence
special Mass for All Saints Day is also a Mass of Remembrance where students and staff pray for alumni and teachers who have passed on to the next life. These Masses are offered by priests from partner parishes and Immaculate’s own Fr. Cole, who all generously give of their time for students. During Lent, students participate in a penance service and have the opportunity to go to Reconciliation, again through the generosity of local parish priests. Also for Lent a group of students presents the Stations of the Cross devotion. This year students in Intro to Art made linoleum cut prints for each station, which were posted around the gym. The student body walked the Stations of the Cross by grade, visiting each print which helped them focus on the event and meaning of that station. In 2016-17 about 130 students regularly participated in Campus Ministry activities. The Campus Ministry organizes service activities on its own and in partnership with other Immaculate and community organizations. This year’s cereal drive to benefit the Morning Glory Breakfast program, sponsored in cooperation with Key Club and Peer Leadership, collected 766 boxes of cereal, enough to keep Morning Glory well stocked for a full year. The fall Rake and Bake, coordinated by Handy Dandy Handy Man of Brookfield, saw the largest number of IHS students ever participate – 68 students raked lawns for four homeowners who are unable to do their own raking or afford to hire someone to do it. Campus Ministry also visited the John Paul II Center, adjacent to Immaculate High School playing fields, to carol at Christmas time and deliver hand-made Christmas cards, which were a major hit with the

residents since some do not receive mail at all. A number of Campus Ministry members visit weekly at the Center. IHS student Frankie Chieffalo ‘19 has organized weekly card games which have become quite popular, as has Frankie himself – some residents will only play if they can be his partner! Forty students and seven chaperones attended the March for Life in January 2017. The group participated in a rally and concert on Thursday evening, Mass on Friday morning and then marched on Friday afternoon all the way to the Supreme Court steps, where they heard some of the featured speakers. The students came back energized knowing that they had raised their
voices in support of life. Immaculate also participates in Midnight Run NYC. Four to five times a year a group of ten to twelve students, chaperoned by parents and staff, prepare and distribute food, clothing, blankets and personal care items to the homeless poor on the streets of New York City. These runs take place overnight at pre-determined locations where the students not only give out the supplies but also engage and interact with their recipients, creating a human bond of connection and trust. This is a very moving experience for students. The Midnight Run has been coordinated for the last several years by Ken and Maureen Decker, Gerry and Linda Hatcher and Patrick and Marianne
Fahey. Immaculate is so proud of everyone’s service which has brought comfort to so many as well as formative experiences to students. Community service is a big part of life at Immaculate High School. In 2016-17, Immaculate High School students completed a total of 24,650 hours of community service with 88 students receiving a Presidential award for 100 or more hours performed.§
At the park Pope Francis reminded the pilgrims that Jesus is always there offering mercy when we stumble and we therefore must also be merciful, build bridges and reach out to the poor, the lonely and those who we fear because they are unfamiliar.Over the next three days the Pope shared Stations of the Cross, an overnight vigil and Mass with the pilgrims before the thirty-first Would Youth Day came to a close. The Immaculate pilgrims returned with invigorated faith, a new understanding of the presence of the Church in the world and the importance of God’s mercy in our own lives and in how we treat others. They were also awed by the beauty of Poland.

The Key Club is a service club for high school students associated with Kiwanis International. During the 2016-17 school year the club held numerous activities, including acting as guides at Immaculate’s annual Back to School/Meet the Teachers Night and as Study Buddies for preschoolers at Shelter Rock School.
COMMUNITY SERVICE HIGHLIGHTS
Service is an integral part
of life at Immaculate High School. Not only is it key for the formation of capable, empathetic leaders for our community, it is also what Jesus demands of us as His followers. At the Last Supper, He washed His disciples’ feet telling them, “If, I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet.” John 13:14 During the 2016-17 school year, students performed over 24,650 hours of community service. The Key Club also assisted with the Taste of Danbury festival and the Friends of the Danbury Library Book Sale, participated in the Morning Glory Walkathon to benefit the Dorothy Day Hospitality House in Danbury and conducted the annual Dorothy Day Breakfast Cereal Drive (sponsored in cooperation with Campus Ministry and Peer Leadership) that provided over 700 boxes of cereal for its Morning Glory Breakfast Program. The Key Club also raked lawns for those who are unable to clean and spruce up their yard through the annual Rake ‘N Bake event, sponsored two families by preparing two complete Thanksgiving dinner baskets for client families of the Interfaith AIDS Ministry, and held a spring casual day for the Gary Sinise Foundation which raised $1,910.

She’s the First Club in Memory of Rebecca Draper-Townsend The She’s the First club raises funds to provide educational scholarships to young girls in low-income countries including Ethiopia, India, Peru and Uganda. Fundraising activities included a Tye Dye Cupcake Bake Sale, a joint fundraiser with the Immaculate volleyball team and the 2nd Annual She’s the First 5K Fun Walk/Run in Memory of Rebecca Draper-Townsend. The event raised $6,800. A Movie Night & Clothing Donation Night was held to collect gently used or new clothing for the Malala Fund, an organization focused on improving girl’s access to safe, quality and relevant education. 62 Reverence

Additionally, the Key Club sponsored its December casual day for the United Way of Western Connecticut’s Ready Set Read program, which provided over 400 books for 26 preschool classrooms in the Danbury area, and packed 17 “Christmas in a Shoe Box” boxes for Samaritan’s Purse, which provides children in over 100 countries with shoeboxes packed with school supplies for their Christmas gifts. In December the track teams run a marathon relay on the track at Immaculate High School to honor the Angels from Sandy Hook who lost their lives. Each athlete runs an individual mile until a total of 26 miles has been completed, one mile for each Angel. After each mile is run a candle is lit and a sign with one of the Angel’s names is hung on the fence until all of the Angels are honored. 63
