Immaculate High School is a private, non-profit Catholic college preparatory institution serving students from 28 communities in Connecticut and New York. REFLECTING ON THIS YEAR’S JOURNEY

ne year ago, the World Health Organization declared the spread of COVID-19 a worldwide pandemic initiating a time of challenge and uncertainty; we were mandated to isolate. The stress of navigating new technologies and conducting hybrid and concurrent instruction confronted us daily. So many unknowns seemed insurmountable and confusing. But, when Immaculate’s doors opened in September, the tremendous faith, commitment and vision of our Reopening Planning Committee, faculty, staff and parents was evident. When reflecting on this year’s journey, it is clear that every member of our school community was focused on what and how we needed to move forward to provide a safe and effective learning environment for our students. While there were many sacrifices, the outcomes of partnerships with parents, teachers and staff as well as the local health department officials helped make the school year uniquely positive. Teachers had to reset their baseline. “We all had to come to the realization that business as usual was unrealistic but our school mission and our faith had to remain strong,” says President Mary Maloney. She commends the tremendous generosity of so many alumni, friends and the leadership of our School Board for 4

acknowledging the importance of providing the necessary resources and opportunities for all students. Everyone at Immaculate is so grateful for the outpouring of support as plans were revised for major fundraising events, including the Annual Golf Outing, Annual Giving Day and Light the Way Gala. In addition, alumni and parents of alumni joined together to help support the school’s health and wellness program by transforming a space into a state-of-the-art Fitness Center. “It is deeply heartwarming and affirming that so many believe in all that we do at Immaculate. Our recognized challenges were offset by intangible goodwill and amazing community spirit.” says Maloney.

Insightful Leadership Provides Students Extraordinary Recognition School President, Mary Maloney, Principal Wendy Neil and Dean of Counseling Kathleen Maloney collaborated on what it would take to make sure that students were able to not only succeed in their academics but also to be personally fulfilled. “Student resilience taught us much as we pursued moving forward with academic planning,” says Wendy Neil, school Principal. “As teachers adjusted

their plans, the curriculum goals and objectives continued to maintain the quality needed to enable students to succeed and be prepared for the next level of coursework,” states Kathleen Maloney, Dean of Student Counseling and Special Programs. Offering a synchronous hybrid education required training and additional investments in technology software and hardware. Technology Coordinator, Dave Cirella, assessed the results of the Spring 2020 remote learning process and upgraded teacher access to the internet at home as well as at school and was instrumental in training teachers further on the use of remote desktop access as well as the enhanced Microsoft Teams platform. The classroom at home for students also needed to be considered as parents tried to work from home with siblings vying for computer and Wif-Fi time. Finding a way to provide wifi service for students who did not have service access was crucial. Administrators offered numerous virtual parent meetings to share ongoing academic and extracurricular plans as revisions were made to move forward with the expectation of all students returning in full by the third quarter. Wendy Neil explains that “Our teachers were receptive to the changes that needed to be made with instructional strategies, curriculum and understanding of student learning needs. It was not easy at first but their determination, collaboration and professional insight was exceptional. Moving from two cohorts being in school twice a week to all students back in the building by Easter break required partnerships to figure things out.” The recognition earned by our students this year were abundant. Students were able to participate in athletic training and league competitions which demonstrated

their team spirit, athletic talents and school pride. Thanks to the efforts of many, we hosted outdoor celebrations for our underclassmen, held a long-awaited Spirit Week, hosted a faculty versus student trivia contest and underclassmen awards presentation. Our athletic teams were phenomenal in their spring season competitions with notable championship games by our boys baseball, girls softball as well as boys and girls golf teams. Our student actors in the drama, Medea, earned seven Halo nominations including Best Classical Play and those who performed in the musical, We will Rock You, earned nineteen Halo nominations including Best Contemporary Musical plus four Stephen SondheimAward nominations. Numerous students earned recognition in individual arts, literature and service endeavors. We are very proud of our Class of 2021 as they demonstrated, through an unusual year, immeasurable faith and Mustang Spirit. As a class of 108, students earned 20,380 service hours and were awarded $28.4 million in college scholarships. We wish each and every one of these amazing young men and women many blessings in their college journey and beyond.

Moving Forward Taking steps to ensure that we are addressing all of the emotional and academic needs of our students and our teachers, we are expanding the school’s administrative team with the addition of a new Assistant Principal for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, focusing upcoming teacher professional development on social-emotional and teaching strategies, and developing a more rigorous Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Advisory program for the new school year. Partnering with teachers as our new Assistant Principal for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment is Steven Santoli. Steve joins the Immaculate team after serving as the principal for Assumption School in Fairfield for the last six years. Prior to that he taught science and social studies at St. Thomas Aquinas School, also in Fairfield. Before joining the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Bridgeport, Mr. Santoli spent over a

decade as a high school social studies teacher in New York and Connecticut. He also recruited and enrolled future educators as an Assistant Director of Graduate Admissions and was a track and field coach at Sacred Heart University. Santoli is “grateful for the opportunity to join the administrative team and serve the students, staff and families of the Immaculate High School community. The moment I stepped foot on the campus I knew I was home.” On the heels of transitioning from a hybrid learning program, the school will be hosting monthly professional development meetings with teachers to focus on assisting students with not only strengthening academic skills but with emotional support. In addition to introducing the IXL program for math progress monitoring at all grade levels, teachers will be trained in mitigation strategies for any learning losses due to a hybrid learning environment for students.

THE FUTURE OF IMMACULATE

he members of the Immaculate School Advisory Board, administration and the Office of the Bishop have been in conversations regarding the transition of Immaculate High School from Diocese of Bridgeport school to a diocesan-sponsored school. It was agreed that effective July 1, 2021, Immaculate High School would be governed by a board of directors who will be responsible for the financial viability and operations of the school. Bishop Frank Caggiano will serve as the Member of the Corporation and will primarily be ensuring that the Catholic identity of the school is maintained. The school’s affiliation with the Diocese of Bridgeport will be concerned with upholding the integrity of the diocesan mission for all schools and with the services provided by the Department of Human Resources. Chairman of the Board, David Cappiello, shares “This is an exciting time in the history of Immaculate. I am looking forward to working

with our board members and with the school’s administration to further enhance our school operations and vitality.” Tony Cirone will serve as the Vice-Chairperson along with a total of seventeen board members who will be appointed to conduct ongoing review of the school’s progress in implementing advancement, technology, financial, enrollment, marketing and alumni engagement plans. The school’s 2021-2024 Strategic Plan was designed by the Board knowing that this corporate transition would become effective. In addition, a Steering Committee has been appointed and a feasibility study is nearing completion for the launching of a capital campaign in 2021-2022. A 1986 graduate of Immaculate and current parent, Cappiello demonstratively states “As we approach the celebration of 60 years, our vision for the future has no boundaries. We will continue to be a first choice for families seeking an exemplary, innovative Catholic High School education.”

FITNESS CENTER DEDICATION

mmaculate High School revealed its new Fitness Center at a dedication ceremony in May. The Center is part of the school’s initiative to expand its health and wellness programs for all students. Equipped with stationary bikes, low impact treadmills, training bench, ellipticals, rowing machines, mirrors, TV monitors and more, the Fitness Center will serve as a place for students to work individually with a trainer, workout with coaches and use during some PE classes. The Fitness Center project was designed and created by parents of alumni, Michael Basile, Anthony Rizzo, Jr. and Ross Rizzo and alumnus Ed Kilian III ‘99. “They found an unused space in the school and converted it into a state-of-the-art facility for our students”, says Athletic Director Nelson Mingachos. The dedication of the Fitness Center was made to the Basile Family, Edward Killian III and the Rizzo Families for their stewardship as well as to Clancy Moving & Logistics, Earthmovers Inc., Enhance A Colour, F&M Electric, Mustang All Sports Club (MASC), NY-CONN Corporation, Rizzo Companies, Silent Watchman Security Services, The Summit at Danbury, David Sousa Plumbing & Heating and Wilshire Real Estate Advisors for donating their time and talent to complete the project. As part of the ribbon-cutting dedication program, Monsignor Robert E. Weiss, Pastor of St. Rose of Lima Church, led with an invocation followed by a blessing of the facility. Chairman of the Board David Cappiello and School President Mary Maloney unveiled the dedication plaque and shared their appreciation of the almost twelve months of hard work by a collaborative and innovative team who were able to transform a vision into a reality.

Finding Ways to Support Student Success Student Counseling and Special Services CHANGE IN PROCESS NOT PROGRAM

We help you help them grow.” When business as usual was disrupted, counseling, like other school departments, found ways to successfully deliver their program whether it was their usual suite of offerings or additional support required due to the changes wrought in the lives of the students and their families.

Contact and Communication Finding ways to keep students engaged with all parts of the high school experience was paramount. The use of virtual meeting/ classroom management platforms enabled frequent contact between counselors and their assigned students in groups and individually. This contact was especially important for getting to know their freshmen this year and it also enabled parents to be present when each student met with his/her counselor to choose courses for 2021-2022, so they could hear how and about what the counselors spoke with the students. Early dismissal from classes on Wednesdays during the full virtual and the hybrid synchronous learning phases provided valuable time on Wednesday afternoons to meet with students, conduct social/emotional learning activities and present invited speakers.

Kate Maloney published weekly college counseling updates, reminding seniors of their deadlines and sharing links to helpful articles. She closed out the year with some great essays designed to reassure seniors that all will be well and to encourage them to put “their all” into their freshman year.

NEW INITIATIVES

Finding Ways to Support Student Success

Getting Tested - SAT, ACT, PSAT/NMSQT

Because standardized testing dates were repeatedly cancelled, many colleges agreed that they would not require test scores as part of applications from the Class of 2021. Yet a lot of “merit money” is dependent upon test scores so the counselors got approval to hold a socially distanced SAT for Immaculate seniors. They were also able to utilize the space available in the school on all-virtual Wednesdays to hold standardized testing for the other grades as well, so that everyone was able to take the test they needed, data from which helps counselors advise students for success.

College Bound To accommodate a virtual college application process for the Class of 2021, counselors converted what was a paper process to online forms and webinar meetings. They advised students on how to get the most out of virtual college rep visits and college fairs. The annual Alumni College Panel, when members of the previous graduating class speak to the current seniors and juniors about their first semester college experience, was

Naviance Curriculum

Naviance is the platform, typically introduced to students in junior year, which Immaculate has been using to help students manage the college application process. Naviance also offers a suite of activities designed to build the skill sets necessary for success after high school such as self-understanding, social emotional growth, interpersonal communication, problem solving and teamwork which students in all four classes can benefit from. This year the juniors worked on some of these modules. Going forward all students will participate in the Naviance curriculum, completing activities appropriate to where they are in their high school career.

Helping Your Peers Excel (HYPE) HYPE pairs triads of seniors as mentors with small groups of freshmen. In 2020-2021 they conducted the Freshmen in the Fold program to help the incoming class find its feet in a virtual school experience. The seniors along with counselors met with the freshmen multiple times throughout the year and worked on a mix of social and academic activities.

PSAT 8/9 and their first semester grades, the top academic performers of the freshman class are invited to participate in the Immaculate Scholars Program. The goal of this program is to provide a bonding experience that helps replace competition with cooperation, encourages them to put forth positive leadership in the school and introduces them to thinking about college earlier than usual in their high school career. Participants engage in activities and discussions to understand their own personal goals, learn what leadership looks like and know what colleges look for in applicants.

Virtual Calming Room The Virtual Calming Room is a web page that connects students and faculty to a variety of online media to help them relax and de-stress. Featured links lead to auditory and visual experiences, guided meditation, creative, game and physical activities, as well as mental health information and smartphone apps.

Forever Grateful For Their Dedicated Service Immaculate has said good-bye to six exceptional faculty and staff. Tom Mertens and Nanci Stockmann retired in July 2020 and in June 2021 Anik de Giverny-Claflin, Joseph Muchanski, Marie Proverb and Terri Ring announced their retirements. We bid them a sad yet grateful farewell. We thank them for their many years of service, for their care of so many students and for their inspired and innovative contributions to our school community. We wish them many blessings as they begin their years of retirement.

Tom served as Dean of Students for four years, represented the faculty on the School Advisory Board for seven years, and sat on the National Honor Society Faculty Council for eleven years. He also spoke with heartfelt patriotism and honor at numerous Immaculate Veterans Day concerts and programs. “Immaculate is a unique experience,” he says. “To current and future students: participate in activities, challenge yourself and attempt things you never thought you would. I was always impressed by the talents of IHS students, be it in the classroom, in athletics or in the fine arts.”

NANCI STOCKMANN September 1986 July 2020

THOMAS MERTENS September 2007 - July 2020 Tom Mertens joined the faculty in September 2007, having retired as a Colonel after thirty years in the Army. He was drawn to IHS having attended Catholic high school and college himself and having worked with youth during his military career. Over his twelve-year tenure as a teacher at Immaculate, the number of physics courses more than doubled. “I am immensely proud of how the Physics program has expanded and reaches many more students,” he says. Many students look back fondly on the numerous activities he developed to demonstrate the principles of physics such as the film canister launch, the egg drop and egg launch, the balloon launch/ target challenge (he being the target) and the AP class RubeGoldberg machine. In spring 2020, the machine was designed virtually with each student constructing a portion at their home that 10

Over the span of thirty-four years Nanci Stockmann has taught many of the courses offered in the Social Studies Department - with World Geography and U.S. History being her favorites. Nanci’s focus and her joys were with her students - the moments when new understanding shines from a student’s face or thanks from a former student in a time of need. “I always looked to make my classes fun as well as having the students learn,” she says. To this end, she incorporated memorable projects and activities such as the Ethnic Heritage Luncheon, part of a unit on immigration, into her lesson plans. Students researched their family heritage and brought in a favorite food from their ethnic background to share. Many parents and grandparents assisted with the culinary preparations and the food was so abundant, faculty and students from other classes were able to stop in for a bite. Another project involved researching a year in history and then coming in-character to report on the main events of the year. Nanci has been a class advisor several times, Spiritual Life moderator, and moderator the Key Club from 1997 until she retired. Her care for her students lasts well beyond graduation. She keeps in touch with many alumni and has attended numerous weddings, baby showers and baptisms. She tells students, “ Believe in yourself because you are capable of doing unbelievable things.” In retirement she will be volunteering with Colonial Capital Humane Society and Samaritan’s Purse in North Carolina where she and her husband plan to relocate.

JOSEPH MUCHANSKI September 1976 June 2021 225 COURSES/8,250 CLASSES/45 YEARS In the spring of 1976, principal Robert Gerwien procured a list of Western CT State College graduates in order to line up interviews with potential teachers. One of his calls went to Joseph Muchanski, who agreed to the interview and was subsequently offered a position. The longest tenure in Immaculate High School history, he taught 225 courses and 8,250 classes during his 45 years. “At first I didn’t think I would stay long but I fell in love with the school and made a career of it,” says Muchanski, “As a teacher one can’t ask for a better place to teach.” He continues, “One gratifying aspect of teaching at Immaculate is being able to teach a student body that takes its education seriously; students who can carry on a conversation with an adult without much difficulty - impressive.” Another was being allowed to develop an array of history electives which have included Modern East Asia, Superpowers, The U.S. Since 1945, and, Muchanski’s personal favorite, World War II, a full year, extensive and detailed course. As moderator of the Travel Club, Muchanski led 20 student trips to Europe between 1982 and 2004, including the Soviet Union in 1989. Eventually, he had taken Immaculate students to every Western European country except Iceland and Portugal. Muchanski says, “Organization and consistency are the keys to success in education. Examine your work daily.” Every one of his former students has been privy to these sage words. He looks forward to teaching part time at the college level and hopes to travel again to Iceland, Japan and Argentina.

MARIE PROVERB September 1996 - June 2021 “I’ve always said retirement is not in my vocabulary, but this year I began to think about things that had been sitting on the back burner for many years while I went all-in on teaching,” said Marie Proverb when asked about her decision to retire after 25 years at Immaculate. Señora Proverb, as her Spanish students address her, was teaching French at St. Mary School in Bethel when Robert Gerwien called offering a long-term subbing position. After completing that, she went back to school to finish her Spanish credential. She had just accepted a position at Derby High School when Mr. Gerwien called again, this time with a permanent position. As she weighed what she would do, her son told her, “Immaculate is where you belong.” She has served as World Language Department Chair, Senior Class Moderator, National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society moderator, and chaperoned student trips to Spain, France, England and Eastern Europe. She was honored in 2020 with the Immaculate High School Distinguished Service Award for her exemplary dedication to her students and the school. She is an avid IHS athletics fan, attending countless games and events cheering on the Mustangs, serving as a water girl for the varsity football and basketball teams. In 2013 she played the lead role of Abuela in the IHS Spring Musical production of In the Heights. For Marie Proverb, every day at Immaculate has been a gift, “I have loved working with the students and getting to know them. I love the feeling of family at Immaculate.” She encourages students to, “Follow your dreams. Listen to your heart and then figure it out with your brain.” And those things on the back burner? She’d love to get back to playing the piano more. She plans to visit her sister, daughter and friend in California whenever she wants - not just during a school break.

Forever Grateful For Their Dedicated Service ANIK DE GIVERNYCLAFLIN September 2014 June 2021 Anik. De Giverny-Claflin loves teaching and has been very happy during her seven years at Immaculate. Anik began her career at the Melrose School followed by teaching at Chase Collegiate School. She was an instructor of the French Club at St. Rose of Lima School and was teaching adults at the Alliance Française of NW CT when Principal Joe Carmen called to ask if she would be interested in a part time position at Immaculate. When she arrived at Immaculate, her challenge was to grow the program from one first level course. Her students enjoyed such cultural experiences as making the Büche de Noël (yule log cake) at Christmas time, writing and performing café skits to practice using the language they had acquired and singing Il Est Né, le Divin Enfant - a French Christmas carol - at the Immaculate Christmas concert.

August 2011 June 2021 Terri Ring has been the accounts payable manager in the Immaculate Business Office for ten years but began her affiliation with Immaculate in 1998 when her oldest son entered as a freshman. Her three sons attended and graduated - David ‘02, Daniel ‘07 and Connor ‘11. Terri and her husband became quite actively involved, working on proms and musicals (Terri worked at the soundboard) and attending sporting events. At the time her youngest graduated and was off to college, her current job was winding down and she was looking for something new to do. Immaculate President Kathleen Casey had just hired a new business manager and was looking for someone to do accounts payable. Terri Ring was the right person. For eight years, she also chaired the Recognition Committee. The Committee selects the Student of the Month from blind nominations made by teachers. In addition, they used to track service hours by hand from students’ paper submissions in the days before the online reporting portal, a massive job.

Anik believes that, “Learning a language helps one understand people and helps to bridge differences between cultures.” She urges students not to be afraid to speak. Practice makes perfect!

“I’ll always be grateful for what Immaculate and the fantastic teachers did for our kids and family,” she says. “It’s been a wonderful experience - a great place to have your children attend school and I can’t tell you how many really, really great people I’ve met and worked with throughout the years.”

She plans to enjoy life at a slightly slower pace and hopes to be able to travel as well, especially to see her family in France.

Terri is looking forward to being able to have longer visits with her three sons and her grandchild.

Student of the Year Mark Radigan ‘21

ark Radigan experienced a gratifying finish to this challenging school year after being named Immaculate’s Student of the Year. Mark earned this honor for consistently demonstrating school spirit and dedication to IHS, strength of character and faith in action through kindness to others. His passion for learning and going above and beyond what is expected, including encouraging others to do their best, is what helped him achieve this distinguished honor.

“It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” Mark stated. “Student Council gave me so many opportunities to give back to my school community, while also allowing me to form relationships with many of my closest friends and faculty.”

Mark said, “I wasn’t sure that Immaculate was going to give out the Student of the Year Award given that we had been hybrid for three quarters of the year. When they announced the award, and I heard my name called, it was an exhilarating feeling, one which I won’t ever forget.” Entering IHS as a freshman, not knowing anyone, was an adjustment but Mark soon found new friends when he got involved in Student Council. “It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” Mark stated. “Student Council gave me so many opportunities to give back to my school community, while also allowing me to form relationships with many of my closest friends and faculty.” Despite the many obstacles thrown at him during his junior and senior years, he has no regrets for the way things turned out. “Though Covid-19 disrupted my last two years, I feel that I was able to accomplish everything that I set out to do. Ultimately, the students and faculty are who helped keep me going on the road to success.” That road will lead Mark to the University of Rhode Island this fall to study Sports Media and Communications.

Ethan Beaulac ‘21

Senior Ethan Beaulac completed his Eagle Scout project, giving back to a dance studio he has performed at. He built benches and cubby spaces for the Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance, which helped the studio better serve their students during the pandemic. They were able to put the cubbies in each of their three studio rooms so students have a designated and distanced place to put their belongings during class. The cubbies are able to be easily cleaned in between classes to follow health and safety protocols.

Patrik Backus ‘22

Patrik Backus ‘22 created a prayer grotto outside of Immaculate High School’s chapel for his Eagle Scout Project. He created a beautiful perennial garden with a statue of the Blessed Family and two engraved stone benches for students, faculty & staff to sit and pray. Patrik dedicated the prayer grotto to those who lost their lives to the COVID-19 virus; and all of the men and women who are risking their lives to save others.

Will Doran ‘22

William Doran ‘22 is a member of Boy Scout Troop 52 in Danbury. His Eagle Scout service project benefits Regional Hospice and Home Care of Western CT. Will reconditioned the outdoor teak furniture in the Hospice Memorial Garden that had become weathered from years of exposure. He chose Danbury Regional Hospice for his project because of the outstanding care services they provided to his father shortly before his death in August 2019. Reconditioning the garden furniture will not only provide a more comforting experience for families during the difficult process of grief, but will also serve to honor and remember those who have passed at Hospice and are memorialized in the garden.

Jake Windas ‘22 completed his Eagle Scout project (Troop 52) with help from the International Women’s Pilot Organization - the Ninety Nines by designing and painting a traditional compass rose air marker at the Danbury Airport last month. Jake began this project last spring, meeting the challenges of Covid related delays and obstacles with initial planning, requesting and being granted airport and city council approvals, securing donations and much coordination. Both Scouts and women pilots (some who flew in that day) took advantage of the warmer weather to help construct this landmark identifier.

The CyberPatriots team competed in the CyberPatriots XIII National Tournament and placed first and fifth in the opening two rounds and finished the third round strong with a first place win for the gold tier and third overall for the state of Connecticut. Nate Varda ‘22 from Boy Scout Troop 135 in Brookfield chose the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary in Newtown, CT for his Eagle Scout project. Nate organized volunteers to build and install 8 Eastern Bluebird houses, as well as hand seed about 2-½ acres of land with buckwheat, rye, and meadow seeds as part of the sanctuary’s meadow restoration project. Nate attended school in Newtown and was in lockdown during the Sandy Hook shooting. He’s become good friends with several siblings of the victims and wanted to give back to this community and family that means so much to him. Immaculate’s Brave Engineers team participated in the Real World Design Challenge (RWDC), receiving second place in the State Finals. This incredible performance qualified the Brave Engineers for the RWDC National/International competition. The Brave Engineers, coached by Mrs. Jeanine Antonios, includes members Mario Perez ‘22, Carolyn Jandura ‘22, Nikolas Badinelli ‘22, Meryl McKenna ‘21, Shaun McKenna ‘23 and Zifeng Zhan ’22.

While it is the responsibility of the entire faculty and staff to contribute to our community living out this identity, IHS Chaplain, Deacon Jeff Font leads the way nurturing and promoting our journey of faith and service.

In addition to school-wide morning and afternoon prayer, Deacon plans and conducts special liturgies, prayer services and monthly liturgies where he is often the homilist at those Masses. AS NORMAL AS POSSIBLE IN 2020 In the face of the changes necessitated by the pandemic, Deacon Jeff worked to keep our journey of faith strong. With the kind permission of pastor Fr. Chip O’Neill, he hosted weekly virtual Adoration from St. Joseph Parish in Brookfield, where he serves. Likewise, school first Friday and holy day Masses were at first live streamed from St. Joseph in Brookfield which later transitioned to live-streaming from the Monsignor Hossan Chapel.

Deacon Jeff kept the students apprised of service opportunities as he became aware of them so that they could fulfill their requirement and, most importantly, continue to do good in the world.

The annual Stations of the Cross service which is normally held at an assembly and portrayed by students in Campus Ministry and Drama Club became a student produced virtual presentation, led by senior Ethan Beaulac. On the National Day of Prayer, every class was provided the same prayer for hourly intentions for our nation’s leaders, asking for mercy and help living our faith, thanksgiving for our blessings, for help in keeping Christ as our center, for families and teachers, for the homeless, hungry and persecuted and strengthening our will to help them. COMMUNITY SERVICE Though community needs were great, opportunities for students to serve at many locations were limited. The administration broadened the scope of activities that would qualify as service to include tutoring siblings, yard work at home and reaching out to neighbors who may be housebound. Working with their parents gave some students a greater appreciation of what it takes to keep family life together. Some students, like senior Kate Mitchell, developed new relationships with neighbors for whom they delivered groceries and other needed items. Students also found creative ways to continue to serve the St. John Paul II Center, as well as other senior centers and organizations they could not visit. Cards, meals and treats were made and delivered. Virtual

LOOKING AHEAD Deacon Jeff is working with four or five new organizations for community service in Danbury including Danbury Housing Authority, Amos House, and New Hope Facility. He will also be starting a Catholic Relief Services chapter - a relatively new CRS program for high schools that focuses on global poverty and hunger relief. In the coming year he would like to hold evening Campus Ministry meetings - “pizza and prayer” - and to try and involve parents more. PART OF A GREATER COMMUNITY Just as we try to serve each other and the community around us, we benefit from the support of other members of the Body of Christ who promote our Catholic identity through donations and service to us. Deacon Jeff is grateful to the many alumni, parents and businesses who made our recent chapel renovation possible. The project resulted in a stronger Catholic church appearance and atmosphere, a feeling of a sacred space, which is important for inspiring and centering the faith of students and all who use it. He is especially grateful for the support of the Danbury area pastors and priests who respond to his call to provide our school community with the Eucharist, Reconciliation and priestly presence. Parish priests are extremely busy, so the gift of their time to be with our students is precious and greatly appreciated.

Zachary is a Distinguished Honors student, a recipient of the 2020 Cornell Club award for academic excellence, recipient of the Excellence in Graphic Design and Arts Award as well as the St. Thomas Aquinas award, President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence, and the Isabelle T. Farrington Academic Excellence award. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society and a two time award recipient of the CT Science and Engineering

alutatorian Meryl McKenna will attend Washington University in St. Louis where she will study biomedical engineering. Meryl was recognized as a National Commended Merit Scholar in 2020. At Immaculate, Meryl received a four-year merit scholarship, is a Distinguished Honors student and a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society and is the recipient of the Isabelle Farrington Academic Excellence Award. She is a talented three-sport varsity athlete, having played varsity soccer, tennis and outdoor track for Immaculate, and was named a Scholar Athlete by the CAS-CIAC, served as captain of her soccer team, named SWC Championship Most Valuable Player and

was invited to play on the All Academic Team in 2020. Meryl has received the President’s Volunteer Service Award, the Rensselaer Medal for her dedication and excellence in science and math and was one of four recipients nationally to receive the STEM Scholarship for Women from the Mensa Foundation.

nnual spring musicals are part of the Immaculate High School tradition. Due to Covid-19, the 2020 musical was unfortunately unable to go on, but director Matthew Farina was determined to make the 2021 show a reality. The planning process for this year’s production has been different from most years, as a virtual show was inevitable. When exploring possibilities for shows, Farina wanted an option that would come across screens as well as it would on a stage. “I wanted to weave the virtual production into the storyline of the show,” he said. This goal of having the storyline of the show make sense virtually eliminated traditional options such as Oklahoma, which takes place in a time where Zoom and virtual watching would be foreign concepts. Thus, Immaculate’s rendering of We Will Rock You was born. We Will Rock You is told through the songs of the British rock band Queen and is set in the distant future where live music and free thought have been banned. A group of rock rebels, called Bohemians, fight against the globally corporate world to restore freedom and bring about the rebirth of rock and roll. The next challenge to tackle was how to produce this show in a way that would be interesting to the audience watching through a screen. Due to restrictions and safety protocols, having the whole cast together and livestreaming the show from the stage was out of the question. That is where the movie musical idea came to be. By filming one scene at a time, students were able to work in smaller groups and maintain social distance to keep each other safe. Scouting and filming at different locations around Immaculate and the Danbury community kept the show fresh and interesting to watch. Farina says the new way of producing the show has allowed not only himself and producer Kathleen Czel to think outside the box, but the students as well. “It may never be like this again,” Farina said in regards to the movie musical format, and explained that they took advantage of the opportunity to be “creatively brave” and use different technology and computer effects to enhance the viewing experience.

Kevin Coonan ‘22 Junior Kevin Coonan who played Galileo in this year’s spring musical We Will Rock You has been acting since he was 6 years old. Freshman year he was in Immaculate’s spring musical Pippin and as a sophomore he was in the production of Once on This Island. Although it was not an easy transition to go from performing on a stage to filming a movie Kevin enjoyed the experience. “It was nice to know that if you messed up a line you could do another take,” he said. Kevin was away on vacation when he learned that he had won the Halo Best Lead Actor award. “It was a surreal moment for me and I was ecstatic to hear the news from our director, Matt Farina who called to congratulate me.” All the hard work over the last six months had paid off.

icole Kolitsas’ senior year ended on a high note after taking home two “Best Actress” awards! One from the Stephen Sondheim Awards for her role of Killer Queen in the spring musical We Will Rock You and the second from the Halo Awards for her role as Medea in the fall drama Medea.

Having a background of working mostly in comedy, the past school year was definitely no laughing matter as Nicole Kolitsas found herself embraced in the challenges of the theatrical production of the Greek tragedy Medea. Like so many other events, this year’s production was performed virtually to a virtual audience due to the global pandemic. “Performing without an in-person audience has become the norm for students. At first we were disappointed but the directors took this as an opportunity to teach us new skills. Acting for the camera is completely different than acting for the stage, and it is now one we are well versed in,” Nicole, who played the lead, shared. “Nothing I have done to date was as heavy or challenging as Medea. Learning and performing the role online added another layer to the difficulty. Director Mrs. Alexa Wild created an environment of trust that encouraged risks and pushed students to go out of their comfort zones, making a daunting role seem a bit less scary,” she said. While Immaculate High School’s Fine Arts Department will miss her talents next year, Molloy College is sure to embrace her many talents as she moves on to pursue a degree in Theatre. Nicole expressed that she felt “prepared, despite not having been on stage in over a year. The perseverance of the cast and creative team resulted in a batch of young actors who are capable of creating art despite many obstacles.

FIELD HOCKEY WINS 3RD SWC CHAMPION TITLE

The road to the Mustangs third SWC South Championship was not an easy one. The team started the first two weeks of the season in quarantine with limited one-hour practices followed by another two week shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The early season disruptions certainly contributed to our 1-2 start, the first time we have ever started with a losing record,” IHS coach Shannon Horosky said. Despite the season-long challenges and playing without their two lead goalies, the Mustangs stepped up in the championship game. Freshman Lyla Mellen made seven saves, senior Abby Giansiracusa

led a strong effort on defense and seniors Allie Demko, Morgan Begler and Celia Preveza scored to lead the #1 seed Immaculate to a 3-0 win over #3 seed Joel Barlow for the SWC South championship. “This is our third SWC title. They are all special, but to see where we are after all the challenges, this one is unique,” Horosky said. “We came into a season having lost eight seniors to graduation. Our team was young but these girls had a lot of enthusiasm, they were determined and worked hard.

THREE IMMACULATE TEAMS RECOGNIZED AS TOP PROGRAMS IN THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT Three of Immaculate’s teams have been recognized as top 10 programs over the last decade in the State of Connecticut. Girls Cross Country, Boys Basketball and Girls Soccer have been dominant and achieved 23 state championships and 5 State runners-up between them. Each team has been led by many talented All American, All New England, All State athletes that have left their mark on Immaculate athletics.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY The Immaculate Girls Cross Country team is ranked as one of the greatest cross country teams of the last decade beginning in 2010 and ending with the 2019 season by MySportsResults.com. The Lady Mustangs earned 48 points and ranked 4th in the State of Connecticut. Over the past decade girls cross country teams were crowned State Champions six times, State runners-up three times and State Open runner up in 2018. BOYS BASKETBALL MaxPreps ranked the IHS Boys basketball as one of the Top 10 most dominant programs of the last ten years in Connecticut. Mustangs, ranked 8th, captured three state championships and appeared in the top 25 four times over the last ten years. GIRLS SOCCER CIAC nominated Immaculate Girls soccer as one of the top Dynasty teams of the first 100 years of the CIAC. They captured their first title in 1995, then went on to a dominant run in the 2000s, capturing 14 championships in all and 10 from 2003 to 2012 and then added three more in this decade. The Lady Mustangs made it to the championship round and led voting through four rounds in the CIAC Sports Dynasty Tournament. MANAGING ATHLETICS During Times of Uncertainty Athletics was an ever changing landscape throughout 2020-2021 as the CIAC met with athletic directors weekly to assess the latest information from health authorities and craft guidance for schools. Questions of whether there would be a season or not and if teams could play a full complement of games were ongoing. Could the whole team practice together? Would fans be allowed? How many? Would there be conference or state play-offs? How many times would the schedule change? In the face of the many challenges our coaches and student athletes faced this past year, they remained positive and resilient. Coaches and Athletic Director Nelson Mingachos worked hard to keep students and parents informed and modeled positive attitudes. “I feel that communicating with them all often helped alleviate some uncertainties. Being transparent and giving them the opportunity to share their feelings and concerns helped all of us feel more connected. I, along with the coaching staff, had zoom calls with the individual teams and their parents at the beginning of each season/sport which gave everyone the opportunity to understand and digest the newest protocols we needed to put into place. Despite so many uncertainties and constant schedule changes our coaches and athletes worked hard, remained positive, showed great leadership and worked together as a team.” comments Mingachos. In this unique year, IHS teams had fantastic seasons and many Mustang athletes earned awards and honors.

We were blessed with another beautiful day at Ridgefield Country Club which provided a perfect setting for a challenging but fun 18-hole scramble for our golfers. Cappiello ‘86 Dear Mustang Family, As a parent, I am grateful for the seamless transition from a synchronous hybrid learning platform to all students going back into the classroom and enjoying some year-end celebrations. Immaculate administration and faculty continued to overcome the challenges they faced since last year. They were prepared, flexible, and put the needs of the students first. Thank you! As an Immaculate High School graduate, I am proud to say that, for the past several years, we have experienced an increase in alumni support and participation. Alumni engagement is critical to the long-term health and success of our school. As the Chairperson of the newly formed Board of Directors, I want to thank the members of the board, committee members, the Mustang All Sports Club (MASC), Immaculate Parent Association (IPA) and parent volunteers. I look forward to the exciting transition of our school corporate status from a diocesan school to a diocesan-sponsored school. Abby Giansiracusa ‘21 Why I Give

bby Giansiracusa, has been able to be resilient in a challenging year.

When this year’s spring musical We Will Rock You went from a live, in-person event to a socially-distanced, virtual film version, the awardwinning singer said she was glad to be able to step outside of her comfort zone and trust the process. “The highlight for me was how different it was as a whole. Being able to work with such amazing people made it so much more exciting. It was definitely fun to do something new,” she said. Although somewhat nervous over the choice of the show, then learning it would be virtual, her trepidation soon subsided as she and the rest of the cast rocked the internet with the area’s first ever online school musical film. “I was so unbelievably shocked and pleased with how it all turned out,” Abby stated, continuing, “the rehearsal and filming process was rigorous and tiresome but after seeing the result, I realized how worth it it all was.”

Abby, who won a Best Actress Halo award for playing “Scaramouche” in the production, will be pursuing Music Education in college at University of Rhode Island. She looks forward to making a musical impact on students just like the teachers in the Fine Arts Department have made on her.

Veterans Hill Of Honor Flags Immaculate’s Veterans Hill of Honor featured American flags adorned with ribbons carrying the names of IHS alumni, friends and family members who have served in the U.S. armed forces. The flags were proudly displayed on Immaculate’s front lawn during Veterans Day week to commemorate all who have served to protect our peace and freedom. Peyton McKenzie ‘21

or Peyton McKenzie, the Graphic Design III class at Immaculate is the catalyst that propelled him to pursue a degree in Graphic Design at Quinnipiac.

“Each assignment challenged me to think outside of the box and create a piece that I was proud of in the end,” Peyton explained. “I learned something new with every assignment that has helped me expand my abilities and streamline the design process.” The Graphic Design III class taught by teacher Samantha Kohler is highly collaborative. Peyton said that the feedback and constructive criticism he received from his peers and teacher was invaluable and helped him to create a finished product that he could take pride in. Peyton chose to continue his studies in the field at Quinnipiac because of the extensive Graphic and Media Design program they offer as well as the personal relationship he felt as a student at Immaculate.

“On top of it being a great fit for me,” Peyton said, “the 3+1 program will allow me to get both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in four years with no extra cost. Additionally, the personal outreach from the school’s professors and students showed me what the Quinnipiac community was all about. They truly wanted me to attend.”

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

hese twins are chasing their artistic dreams in their next chapter. Robert, a visual artist and Vincent, a musician and composer, are both award-winning students who will go on to pursue degrees in the arts at separate colleges. Robert said, “The accomplishment I’m most proud of making at IHS was putting on the spring musical and the fall drama. Watching the musical on the big screen at Edmond Town Hall created a unique feeling I don’t think many people have had in high school. I won’t forget hearing audience members cheer when they saw their friends come on the screen.” From the screen to the canvas, Robert will brush broad strokes while attending the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He said he chose the school for its location and because of the virtual info sessions they held to showcase their students’ works. “They showed a lot of artwork done by students and former students and it all really appealed to me. I found relatability in their stories,” Robert shared. Vincent takes pride in the original music he wrote for Immaculate’s fall dramas in 2018 and 2019. “I was allowed to push my limits and explore new creative musical ideas,” he stated. This fall, Vincent will attend Berklee College of Music. “They didn’t seem confined to a strict interpretation of music which was appealing to me. I’m planning to major in film scoring with a minor in musical theater writing,” Vincent said.

Peter Tragni ‘82 - After a successful career in the Army and 27 years in the Danbury Police Department Peter retired and went back to school. He is currently a licensed therapist and a middle school counselor in Waterbury. Wayne Leiss ‘82 - started his own business and rebranded it this year to Adventures In Connection. Mary (McFeeley) Lavado ‘86 began a new job on June 21 at Ro, a start-up telemedicine company. Mary will be part of the implementation of Ro’s Nurse Triage telephone line.

Vincent DiGilio ‘00 was voted in as the new Danbury City Council President William Hatcher ‘17 graduated from Rensselear Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Will played lacrosse all four years and was captain of the team his senior year. He is a mechanical engineer with OLA Consulting Engineers in Hawthorne, NY.

Isabel Almeida ‘94 was elected corporator at Newtown Savings Bank Ashley Plumb ‘06 received the Rookie of the Year award at Rockwell School in Bethel, which honors a teacher that has been with the school district for less than five years. In August, Ashley will begin her Ph.D. program in Educational Psychology at the University of Connecticut, where she will be studying special education and Applied Behavior Analysis.

Christopher Mok ‘17 - graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology and is kicking off his professional career with McHenry Architecture out of Portsmouth, NH. Chris will also pursue his Masters of Architecture degree in the fall at Wentworth. Kevin McCoy ‘18 published his first ever first-authorship paper, Biomedical Text Link Prediction for Drug Discovery: A Case Study with COVID-19. The strength of alumni connections has always been a part of what makes Immaculate so special, and this past year has been no exception. Despite the challenges of the pandemic which prevented most in-person gatherings, alumni found creative ways to maintain strong bonds with each other and their alma mater. “I have never been so proud to be a Mustang,” says Jeannie (Coleman) Demko ‘88, Director of Alumni Relations. “The unwavering support of our alumni is inspiring and seeing everyone pull together during a challenging time to stay connected and lift each other up is truly heartwarming.”

In September the annual Golden Mustang Mass was live streamed from the Msgr. John B. Hossan Chapel. We were so fortunate to have Golden Mustangs from the Classes of 1966-71 join us virtually for this special day and immediately following the Mass alumni enjoyed reconnecting and chatting via Zoom.

DECEMBER

On November 11, Immaculate High School celebrated Veteran’s Day with a Virtual Veterans Day Tribute in which retired United States Air Force Colonel, Gerard Ryan (IHS Class of 1986) shared his experiences and love of country in a very meaningful and important video message to our students. It was a blessing that many alumni were able to “tune in’’ to the livestream to remember our Veteran’s on that special day.

In December, alumni shared some Christmas cheer by sharing favorite holiday memories, traditions, ornaments, recipes and photos and Jacqui Gantnier ‘66 was the winner of this year’s Ugly Christmas Sweater contest!

JANUARY

Eighteen speakers from several different cities and states were able to participate in IHS’ annual Career Day. These alumni joined our students via a Zoom platform projected onto large screens in the front of their classrooms and shared their expertise, career advice and anecdotes for success.

In January a group of our most recent graduates from the Class of 2020 met via Zoom with current juniors and seniors to share their insights, experiences and advice about college planning during our annual Alumni College Panel

APRIL

A fun highlight from this year was Immaculate’s first-ever virtual 5K, the Alumni Dash. Alumni from 30 classes spanning every decade of Immaculate history took part in the virtual race! Mustangs from all over the world “raced to reconnect” with fellow alumni by walking or running 3.1 miles from anywhere, logging their finish times and sharing amazing pictures of their race adventures!

CLASS OF 2021 SENIOR CLASS GIFT The Senior Class Gift is a tradition at IHS and is an opportunity for seniors to leave their legacy just as former Mustangs have done over the years. The 2021 Senior Class Gift will help to fund a beautiful grotto giving homage to Mary, our patron saint. Future Mustangs will be able to gather around the grotto in prayer. Many seniors made their gift in honor of a favorite teacher, coach or staff member and each honoree received a note acknowledging the gift in their honor. In memoriam ~ July 1970 - October 2020

Always having a passion for teaching and living his faith, Joe Carmen brought his natural ability as a visionary leader to his work as the principal of Immaculate High School from 2011 to 2016. Joe was instrumental in positioning Immaculate as the first 1:1 technology high school in Connecticut as well as developing a strategic plan to successfully increase student enrollment and assist with planning the school’s 50th anniversary. Our love and prayers are with Joe and his family.

In memoriam ~ October 1917 - May 2021

A long time friend of Immaculate High School, Isabelle T. Farrington served on the School Advisory Board and made a tremendous impact for students who excel in academics, demonstrate their faith and take leadership roles in the community through an endowment fund that distributes approximately $25,000 per year. Isabelle believed in Immaculate’s mission, the potential of students and was always seeking ways to demonstrate her inspirational support.

IHS CLASS OF ‘89,

A Beacon Of Light

ometimes a light shines bright, other times dim. For the Class of ‘89, there have been many ups and downs in the last year but through it all, their light has shown bright and they have been a beacon of hope, faith, love, and friendship. In July of 2020, the Class of ‘89 experienced the loss of two of their classmates, Patrick Curtin and Steve Francis. Feeling that loss, several classmates decided to plan a memorial Mass to remember and pray for all members of the class who have passed away. This beautiful Mass was held at St. Rose of Lima Church and alumni and family members gathered together safely in the midst of the pandemic and were comforted by their faith and friendship. The connection that the Class of ‘89 has with each other and to Immaculate is inspiring. During the past year, alumni from this class planned virtual get togethers often, golfed at the annual Golf Outing, served on the School Advisory Board, shared their expertise with our current Mustangs on Career Day, participated in Immaculate’s first ever Virtual 5K, and shared in each other’s joys and sorrows. Bernard Reidy ‘89 who serves as the Development Chair on the School Advisory Board reflects about his class and

shares, “I think we’ve had a terrific class. We’ve always been a great class and have come together a lot to keep that going over the years. It’s a very special bond we share.” In the spring, when Brian McGovern ‘89 was honored at Immaculate’s Light the Way annual gala with the Nancy K. Dolan Leadership Award, his former classmates rallied together in support of Brian and Immaculate. The Class of ‘89 Facebook page exploded with congratulatory self-recorded videos and messages for Brian. Memories and photos were shared and collectively the Class of ‘89 raised $12,000 to continue to support the mission of Immaculate High School. Again, the Class of ‘89 was a beacon of light for each other and their Immaculate family. As the school year came to a close, six members of the Class of ‘89 gathered together at Immaculate’s Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Ceremony in celebration of their sons and daughters who graduated with the Class of 2021. These legacy families were beaming with pride as they shared their joy together. What special bonds IHS alumni possess! These bonds reflect the values of faith and friendship ever present and shining bright in our Mustang family.
