Letter from the President This past year has brought us a very talented and dedicated principal, Wendy Neil. Her vision, compassion and leadership have made the impossible possible. Despite the challenges we have faced this past school year, new doors of opportunity continued to open for our students. Our charism and respectful, responsible culture remained at the forefront as students, teachers and staff worked collaboratively and exponentially, especially the last four months of the school year.

The college experience begins at Immaculate. Our innovative programs continued to support the efforts of students interested in engineering, nursing and technology. Engineering students were recognized as third place winners in a national competition in Washington, D.C.; certified nursing assistant candidates were able to experience learning in our simulated hospital lab and with patients at St. John Paul II Center; music students were able to write and record their own music and graphics arts students were challenged to master skills for business marketing and were recognized for their talents at various competitions. Our Grade 8 Distance Learning Algebra II program continues to be a success. The growth of these programs will continue next year with an additional engineering course and a college-level graphics arts course where students will become certified in Adobe. In addition, we will be offering Accounting and Economics college courses as well as a Spanish for Business course.

Athletics, fine arts and extracurricular activities are primary to extending student experiences. With more than 40 clubs and over 48 athletic teams, students are able to foster their leadership skills as well as challenge themselves outside the classroom. This edition of Traditions captures a mere glimpse of the special moments of student accomplishments both in and outside the classroom.

A special heartfelt thank you to all of you for being so supportive of our fundraising and Annual Fund initiatives. Your participation, particularly in our unexpected Un-Gala this past spring, has made a tremendous difference in our ability to maintain and sustain our student experiences. The renovation of our school Chapel will be completed this summer thanks to the continued support of many alumni classes, families and local parish pastors. Our boiler room will be transformed into a Health and Wellness Center this summer thanks to an alumnus and community donors.

I hope that these next few pages provide you with some true insight into the difference that you have made for all of us this past year and why we continue to be a very blessed school community.

Although IHS Doors Were Closed, Learning Continued

P

rior to the COVID-19 closing of all schools, including Immaculate High School, the administrator team met frequently to assess the safest platforms and communication methods that would be necessary for remote learning to be implemented. Little did anyone know that remote learning would be required for twelve weeks.

On March 13, the school building was closed to all students.

Technology Coordinator Dave Cirella and his Assistant Austin Cirella introduced Microsoft Teams and Zoom to administrators and teachers through extensive hours of training and software and hardware testing. Administrators agreed that student schedules would remain the same but our four-day schedule rotation would provide an opportunity for one day a week to be a day where students could meet virtually with teachers, teachers could meet virtually with

administrators and department planning meetings could take place.

After one week of remote teaching, difficulties with speakers on computers and headsets, establishing new classroom guidelines and implementing new instructional strategies including how to assess students were resolved. Students began expressing their thanks to teachers for making their experiences positive. Although missing their friends and their teachers, students looked forward to the routine of beginning their school on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 7:40am and attending a regular schedule through 2:00pm.

They appreciated teachers offering office hours after 2:00pm for academic support as well as meeting for club activities.

The challenges of working remotely from home and losing the ability to socialize and to be outside were quickly recognized by the counseling team. Led by Dean of Counseling and Student Services Kathleen Maloney, the team found themselves meeting twice daily to create plans and discuss the needs and well-being of individual

students and their families. School Therapist Jenny Casey conducted individual as well as group sessions to help students cope with the unexpected circumstances.

Despite the demands, creativity and determination enabled students, teachers and staff to offer Virtual Coffee Houses, a Virtual Fine Arts Festival, March Is Music In Our Schools activities, Virtual Awards Ceremonies and more. Although not traditional, the Class of 2020 was able to walk the aisle at St. Rose of Lima Church for a Commencement Liturgy to celebrate their accomplishments.

This was a year to add Resiliency to our daily motto of Respect, Responsibility and Reverence. The demands were great, but our amazing team of teachers, counselors, administrators and staff found strength in continuing to offer an exemplary faith-filled collegepreparatory program that allowed students to engage in their learning and be prepared for their upcoming school year.

“As a well-respected visionary leader, Ms. Neil has established networks of collaboration that support our school’s compelling mission, academic excellence and operational vitality. Her effective school leadership and commitment to our students, teachers and parents are immeasurable. The school community is very blessed to have Ms. Neil serve as our Principal,” said Mary R. Maloney, President of Immaculate High School.

Principal Neil first came to Immaculate in 2013 as a teacher of AP US Government, International Relations and Social Studies.

Now an administrator, she also continues to lead the school’s Model UN and Mock Trial teams, is the IHS Social Studies Department Chair and is a member of the Diocese of Bridgeport’s Innovative Teacher Committee.

Her relationship with faculty and being a parent of IHS students helps her understand the needs of the teachers, students and parents.

“I would like to think my relationship with faculty is genuine. I understand that it is their dedication and selflessness that creates the foundation of our mission with our students. My focus is for them to feel

supported and confident that leadership has provided them with the tools to practice their craft,” she said. Even while having the support of the staff and overall school community, Principal Neil’s first year did not go as planned. Besides the daily responsibilities of a principal and the learning-curve, Principal Neil had to help everyone navigate the surprise pandemic.

“My first year as Principal has been anything from what I ever studied from a textbook, but true to what I learned from my days in the classroom. In education you have to be flexible and always be guided by what is best for the students and teachers and ultimately it will be what is best for the school.

You have to predict what is to come and react to what is presented at the moment,”

says Principal Neil. Her flexibility and hard work allowed Immaculate to quickly and efficiently transfer from being an on-campus high school to an on-line academic program.

As a result of her guidance and collaboration with faculty, students received their full college-preparatory, faith-based education from the first day of closure to the end of the year. All students attended e-school daily, meeting with their peers and teachers on a regular and daily schedule. They had regular access to their counselors, the school nurse and the school therapist. Students were even able to meet with their clubs, participate in “gym class,” hold art shows and coffeehouses

and end-of-year activities such as the virtual Student Award Ceremony and a Commencement Liturgy.

There are many challenges ahead; but if this first year was any indication, under the leadership of Principal Neil, Immaculate High School is well positioned to carry on its tradition of excellence and provide one of the best college-preparatory programs in the area.

“I think the challenges that our Immaculate faculty and students have had to endure this year have truly demonstrated the definition of family.

All of the dynamics that come together when one thinks of a family have been tested and proven true,” Principal Neil said “Through the laughs, cheers and tears - we have stayed unified. It’s a special bond that one can not truly understand unless you have experienced it.”

Denise Suarez has been appointed to be the Director of Admissions. Denise is a 1987 graduate of Immaculate, and has served as the Director of Alumni Relations since 2013. In that position she developed and continuously expanded Immaculate’s alumni program to reach and engage its ever growing base of over 7,000 alumni, including members of her own family. She is the parent of two Immaculate alumni, Joey ‘18 and Madeline ‘20, and current student Chris ‘22.

“After thoroughly enjoying my work with our incredible alumni community over the last seven years, I look forward to serving my alma mater in this new role.

I am excited to build upon the great work of our Admissions Department as I look to welcome the next generation of Immaculate students as Director of Admissions,” she said. “I can say without hesitation that the academic continuity, development of compassionate leaders and vibrancy of the Immaculate community have remained steadfast during these challenging times. There has never been a better time to consider Immaculate and I look forward to sharing the mission, values and outcomes of an Immaculate education with prospective families,” Suarez added.

Jeannie Demko will serve as the school’s Director of Alumni Relations. A 1988 graduate of Immaculate High School, Demko returned to Immaculate as Event Coordinator in 2018. In that role she helped plan, organize and run special events including the annual Golf Outing, Spring Gala and Scholarship Breakfast. Jeannie is the parent of two Immaculate students, alumnus Zach ‘19 and current student Allie ‘21.

“Working at Immaculate for the past two years has been an absolute joy. In my new role as Director of Alumni Relations, I will have the privilege and honor to work directly with our amazing network of alumni. Thanks to the leadership of Denise Suarez, our efforts in this area have never been stronger,” Demko said. “I am inspired and energized to continue creating pathways for alumni participation that advance the goals of IHS. As an alumna, parent of an alumnus and current parent I am passionate about the mission of Immaculate and have seen firsthand how alumni relations help benefit our students and contribute to their growth,” she noted.

Kathleen Maloney IMMACULATE’S NEW DEAN OF COUNSELING AND SPECIAL STUDENT SERVICES

T

he Counseling Department at Immaculate focuses on student academic planning, college guidance, scholarships, grants and student well-being. Our counselors begin to know their students freshman year and work with the same students for their four years at Immaculate.

Our comparatively low student-counselor ratio average of 95:1 provides greater opportunities for students to receive the individual services that they need to be successful as an Immaculate student and beyond.

“As counselors, we have the opportunity to get to know the whole student, their interests and passions; part of our role is to help them to discover and nurture those gifts and help them find the path that leads them to their true purpose,” said Kathleen Maloney, who was recently appointed the Dean of Counseling and Special Student -Services, a new administrator position designed to provide enhanced educational, intervention, mental health and specialized student college placement services.

According to Elizabeth Lato, the department offers individualized support to families and students. Counselors get to know students very well through various ways of continuously connecting with them.

“We meet with students one-on-one, in group settings in the classroom and at monthly developmental programming such as advisory and workshops. We are a collaborative team which helps us to continuously focus on the needs of our students and families,” she said. In addition, Lato notes that a top priority of counselors is staying current with ever-evolving college programming, career readiness and student needs to offer the best support possible. ”We are able to advocate for all of our students academically and emotionally in order to maximize their student success,” said Allison Longfellow. New to the team, Micheal DiGennaro explains that the new normal that has emerged means students are facing a whole new level of challenges combined with their school work. “Students need reassurance, whether they are struggling or not, that they are not alone and that we are all in this together.”

School therapist Jenny Casey works with students and families by providing support for emotional, psychological and social issues as well as crisis management. She works with students individually and in groups and also supports parents and guardians. In addition, she coordinates four wellness student assemblies annually, bringing resources and experts in to address issues common to high school adolescents and writes articles for parents on issues such as grief, anxiety, substance abuse and more.

Robin Moravsky, Director of the International Student Program, assists international students with their transition to Immaculate High school and prepares them to become actively involved in student life as well as prepare for college, “Immaculate offers services that other programs do not including an Orientation Week, a full-time counselor, a Bridging the Gap program that connects domestic students with international students,

The 2019-20 School year brought extra challenges for the Counseling Department.

Every staff member faced these challenges with the students, providing distanced but effective support for coping, bereavement, and an uninterrupted academic journey to college.

A Lasting Impact

M

ost future careers depend on scientific knowledge. To encourage students to learn and to love science, IHS has remodeled its physics, chemistry and technology labs in the past few years, as well as added brand new biology and CNA hospital room labs.

This year Assistant Principal Mary Ann Foncello also served as Science Department Chairperson. In this role, Mrs. Foncello dedicated herself to building a cohesive program and developing a coordinated team approach to teaching science at Immaculate. She mentored new teachers, and encouraged them to emphasize problem solving and investigation in the curriculum and increase the number and quality of lab activities. And while she “retires” from many of her non-teaching roles this year, her impact will be felt forever at Immaculate.

“Our science curriculum provides our students with a strong foundation in the sciences. It prepares them to pursue careers in the Sciences, Medicine and Engineering,” “Our science curriculum provides our students with a strong foundation in the sciences. Classes include forensics, biomedical science, anatomy & physiology, health, environmental science and a CNA program in addition to chemistry, biology and physics, with the classes being on the college prep, honors, advanced placement and UCONN Early College Experience levels.

Mrs. Foncello, who began teaching biology and chemistry at Immaculate in 1982, said that the science department goes through a continuous process of program review so that decisions can be made 10

on how to make any needed improvements. The department’s goal is to meet or exceed the Next Generation Science Standards whereby students discover science and apply the science they have learned. The plan is also to incorporate more authentic experiences and interdisciplinary activities.

Since she first walked through the front door of Immaculate in 1966, Mrs. Foncello, Class of 1970, has served in the roles of teacher, Assistant Principal, Acting Principal and Parent of a Student and Alumnus (Martin ’96). “In the 54 years that I have been a member of the Immaculate family, I have known and/or worked for every Principal and President. During my 16-year tenure as the Assistant Principal, I have served under six Principals and three Presidents,” Mrs. Foncello said. She has also served as Science Department Chairperson, Faculty Advisor for the National Honor Society, Founder and Moderator of the Science Club, Class Advisor, Manager of the IHS Bookstore and as a Member of the Recognition Committee.

Mrs. Foncello believes that Immaculate’s science program aligns with the teachings of the Catholic Church and with Immaculate’s motto To Seek Truth Is To Seek God. “I believe that those who study science seek God. It is a way for us to come to know God and the majesty of His creation,” she said. “We provide our students with an education that stresses spiritual, moral and intellectual growth, and as a result they are prepared to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world,” Mrs. Foncello added.

ary Ann Foncello spent much of her lifetime at Immaculate, as a student, teacher and administrator, and she has many cherished memories. As a student, she “admired my teachers who were both knowledgeable and supportive.” She notes that her IHS science classes sparked her interest and imagination and helped make science her lifelong passion.

Mary Ann also appreciates the time she had as a teacher and Assistant Principal. “I have had the pleasure of working with so many talented, passionate and dedicated teachers who were more concerned about making a person than making a living. Immaculate is special; the teachers love to teach, the students love to learn and the parents love and support their children and the teachers,” Mary Ann said.

She has plenty of good advice for IHS students.

“Cherish the friendships you make here. They are a part of your life and they will be with you for life!

Learn to listen! Keep an open mind when presented with new ideas. Try taking things in a new direction.

You might enjoy the scenery along the way and be pleasantly surprised at the end of the journey,” she advises.

Mary Ann will still teach science classes in semi-retirement, and spend more time with her grandchildren and exploring interests.

ince 2011 every student and parent has had the pleasure to know Tom Burns, Admissions Director. The first person they met when beginning their Immaculate journey, he was the key contact person who shared all the wonderful things that Immaculate has to offer and who guided them through the discovery and admissions process.

Recruiting over 900 students for Immaculate High School, Mr. Burns was awarded a prestigious ACAAP New England award for his admissions and marketing successes. He and his wife, Lisa, will be relocating from Connecticut. When asked about his time at Immaculate, he advises students to remember that “High school is a unique experience, a time when you can explore many activities and discover academic interests. Take these experiences and grow them through your life, then share them with others along the way.”

Mr. Burns will be missed, not only for his ability to ensure that new families feel welcome, but for his sense of humor and for his participation in IHS Spring Musicals including building sets, playing the clarinet in the pit orchestra and even acting in “West Side Story.”

IMMACULATE’S COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE MOVES FULL STEAM AHEAD

echnology is an integral part of the learning that takes place at Immaculate.

Our competitive Science, Technology Engineering, Arts and Mathematics programs introduce challenging realworld problems, foster student inquiry and encourage student creativity and problem-solving.

offers more than 12 math classes including advanced algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus. For the past two years, Immaculate High School has had several students achieve perfect scores on the math portion of the SATs.

Engineering classes were added to the program two years ago, taught by math teacher and engineer Jeanine Antonios. She advised the Brave Engineers club, which in its first two years won the State Real World Design Challenge twice and placed third this year in the National Real World Design Challenge.

With interest growing in the engineering fields, Immaculate added a new course for the 2020-21 school year, Civil Engineering and Architecture Honors, the third-level course complementing Introduction to Engineering and Principles of Engineering.

Computer science is another important area that Immaculate emphasizes. Students take Microsoft Suite and then can choose from courses such as Computer Science, IT Essentials and Introduction to Networks. Interested students can work towards CompTIA A+ certification. This certification validates understanding of the most common hardware and software technologies in business and certifies the skills necessary to support complex IT infrastructures, and it is a powerful credential that helps IT professionals worldwide ignite their IT career as it is globally recognized and accredited. A club advised by Immaculate’s IT Director Dave Cirella, the CyberPatriots. placed first in the Platinum Division in the Connecticut Regional National Youth Cyber Defense Competition sponsored by the National Cyber Education Program. This is the fourth time that the team won the State competition, having won the State title in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Immaculate High School provides a progressive Math Program that shows enhanced student results in many ways. For example, IHS students scored more than 100 points higher in the math portion of the SAT than the average school score in Connecticut. T

here are many IHS students who want to work in the medical field after college. To help them prepare for competitive college nursing programs, Immaculate began its Certified Nursing Assistant Program in the 2019-20 school year. Students in this program learn both in the classroom’s well-equipped lab using patient mannequins and in the field, earning 60 hours of handson clinical training at St. John Paul II Center, a long-term care home located a block from the school. Students work directly with residents, assisting them with daily tasks and developing important skills.

CNA students learn important patient care skills and how to help medical staff, including how to take and record vital signs including blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rates, assist patients with personal care and other needs including mobility assistance, and how to receive and give detailed reports to oncoming shifts and nurses and doctors. Once they complete the program, students can take the test to become certified and become eligible to work in the field immediately. This certification will make them more attractive to nursing schools, as well as allow them to work as a CNA while in college, providing income and invaluable experience.

mmaculate’s diverse curriculum assists students with identifying their interests and preparing them for college programs and careers. To enhance its college-preparatory curriculum, Immaculate added new classes for the 2020-21 school year in engineering, digital arts, musical theater and composition, economics and accounting.

Josh DiBella, a 2009 graduate of Immaculate High School, will teach two new courses, Principles of Accounting Honors and a UCONN Early College Experience Principles of Macroeconomics course.

His success as a student at Immaculate enabled him to receive a full merit scholarship to Western Connecticut State University, where he graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Economics. He then received his Master’s degree from the University of Miami and his teacher certification from the University of West Florida’s Educator Preparation Institute.

school year. In addition to his Spanish certification, Mr. DiBella has pursued certification in Business Education and Social Studies.

“We are always looking to offer new courses for our students and so we are initiating a Principles of Accounting Honors course to introduce the students to the language of business and a UCONN Early College Experience Principles of Macroeconomics course, a dual enrollment course where students are considered to be enrolled in a University of Connecticut course and therefore can receive college credits for taking the class. This course will cover how economies function and behave as whole and from a societal perspective,” Mr. DiBella explained.

Mr. DiBella also plans to teach the new course Spanish for the Professions. This course will provide students with material in Spanish that is related to careers in business, healthcare, law and law enforcement. “It will allow them to apply all of the grammatical Spanish that they have learned to real world scenarios. The goal of the course is to give them a unique advantage in their future academic and professional careers,” he said.

“The education that I received at IHS was second to none. While many students struggled to transition to the more rigorous demands of college coursework, I found that the teachers at IHS had prepared us so well that the adjustment was minimal. To this day, I use skills that I learned while I was a student at IHS,” Mr. Dibella said. “I consider many of my IHS teachers to be some of the best educators that I ever had. I enjoyed the small school environment and the family-like culture that Immaculate has always offered,” he noted. As a student at Immaculate, Mr. DiBella was involved in Debate Club, Spiritual Life and the World Language Honors Society.

Mr. DiBella came back to Immaculate to teach because he wanted to work at a place that shared his values and where he could live and practice his faith every day. “Once you leave Immaculate, you learn how truly special the culture is. I wanted to come back to be a part of sharing that culture with the next generation of Mustangs,” he said.

Under the caring eye of Marie Proverb, his World Languages teacher at Immaculate, Mr. DiBella completed all of his field work and student teaching in Mrs. Proverb’s Spanish 3, Spanish 4 Honors and Spanish 5 Honors classes. He taught Spanish 1 during the 2019-20 14

o enhance student opportunities in Immaculate’s STEAM Program, faculty challenge themselves to find innovative programming that will complement their classroom activities and teaching. This year two teachers received Innovation Grants from Foundations in Education for two unique programs. The Innovation Grants Program promotes innovation in Catholic school education by supporting a teacher’s creative project or initiative for the classroom or school.

Math and Engineering teacher Jeanine Antonios received a $3,000 grant to purchase a 3D printer for use in her Introduction to Engineering Design and Principles of Engineering courses and for the school’s award-winning Engineering Club. “The 3D printer will provide students an additional opportunity to develop college-level project skills and allow them access to a wider variety of projects that are meaningful for engineering students, the school’s cross-curricular STEAM programs and the local community,” said Mrs. Antonios.

Fine Arts teacher Leslie Quinn received a $5,700 grant for a Pop-Up Art Program. She will use the grant monies to develop a “pop-up”

he IHS Mock Trial team had a very successful year, winning the first round of the Civics First Mock Trial Competition at the Danbury Courthouse and then two matches at the second round of the Civics First Mock Trial Competition at the Hartford Court House.

This allowed the team to move on to the elite “Round of Eight” for eligibility for the State Competition -- the first time ever an IHS Mock Trial and made it to this level.

The team is advised by Principal Wendy Neil, Social Studies Teacher Chris Houser, State’s Attorney Stephen Sedensky, Attorney Kelly Masi, Attorney Mary-Caitlin Harding and Alumni Mentor Frankie Chieffalo ‘19.

“The Mock Trial team provides students interested in trial law an opportunity to act as trial lawyers and witnesses. It teaches students about our legal system and what goes on in the real world when there is a conflict, either civil or criminal, and how people resort to the courts for justice rather than taking the law into their own hands,” said Mr. Sedensky, a State’s Attorney for the Office of the State’s Attorney, Judicial District of Danbury.

A father of two IHS students, Audrey ‘18 and Stephen ‘20, Mr. Sedensky has been very active with other Immaculate student programs over the years. In addition to coaching Mock Trial, he also filmed JV football games and lacrosse games over the years as his son played. The Sedenskys’ commitment to their children’s education shows why parental involvement is key to both students’ and Immaculate’s success.

“My wife Nancy and I have been so pleased with IHS and its work and influence on our children. We enjoyed going to football, basketball, soccer and lacrosse games over the years. I will truly miss having children at the school,” Mr. Sedensky said. A graduate of a Catholic high school himself, he and his children are testaments to the success a Catholic education guarantees.

FAITH, SERVICE, LEGACY

mmaculate educates students “in the Roman Catholic tradition” which features a call to serve others in our school, our community and the world. The Key Club, initiated in 1996 by Mrs. Nanci Stockmann, Social Studies teacher, teaches students how to lead and to stand for what’s right through service and volunteerism.

Rising seniors who have a good school record may apply for membership which begins their senior year. As members, they agree to be positive role models wherever they are - both within and beyond the school.

The students run multiple projects in support of various non-profit organizations and programs. Some projects take them outside of the school to tutor elementary school children, help run library book sales, rake leaves for senior citizens and provide Thanksgiving baskets for families. For others they call upon the Immaculate community to assist in collecting needed items like breakfast cereal, books or household supplies and in raising funds for selected non-profits.

They frequently work in partnership with the school’s Campus Ministry or National Honor Society.

The impact of leading these projects on the students is inspiring. Mrs. Stockmann has observed that once a student has volunteered for one project, that person comes back and wants to help with something else. Other students who see what Key Club is doing ask if they can assist even if they are not members. “They see the joy in helping others,” she said. “Students often come back and say, ‘I felt so good helping out. It makes me feel that I am needed and that I have made an impact on someone else.’”

Students carry their formative Key Club experience with them beyond their high school years. “Many of my former students have continued to volunteer at their college campuses. Some have said that one of the reasons they chose their college was because there was a deep sense of community service and volunteer opportunities there. As adults in the community, these former members continue to volunteer. It becomes a life-long commitment to helping others,” Mrs. Stockmann noted.

A Key Club alumna brought her experience full circle when she asked current members to help raise funds in support of Smile Train, where she works. The club sponsored a $5 Casual Day and raised enough money to pay the costs of eight corrective surgeries for children born with cleft palates.

Mrs. Stockmann believes that she has a responsibility to teach students to love and respect each other in a Catholic community, and she does this by being encouraging, compassionate and kind in her interactions with students. The fruit of living and sharing her faith can be seen in the vibrancy of the Key Club she advises and in the enduring relationships she forms with her students. She keeps in touch with many of her former students, exchanging Christmas cards, attending graduations, weddings and baptisms and meeting for lunch.

She sees firsthand how these individuals continue to do good in their communities, extending a legacy begun during their Immaculate High School experience.

KATHLEEN CZEL ‘08

n Immaculate show is a massive feat of personal and group effort. It’s hard to fathom the organization and management required to bring the project to opening night. As producer of both the Fall Drama and the Spring Musical, Kathleen Czel ‘08 is a key player in making it all happen.

“My job is supporting the production and making sure everything happens,” said Ms. Czel. “Everything” includes administrative tasks, fiscal management, communication, fundraising, procurement, marketing, security, providing direction and encouragement to students, and pitching in on the crew. It all begins with a meeting with the director - Alexa Wild for the drama or Matt Farina for the musical - to come up with a working outline of what is required to achieve their vision.

“Kathleen is a phenomenal producer,” said Alexa Wild, IHS English teacher. “She has an innate sense of not only what needs to be done and when, but also how to get everything done in an efficient and timely manner.”

Though very shy when she entered IHS, Ms. Czel auditioned for the musical after Mary Raymond, then director, encouraged her.

Despite not being cast, she worked on the crew and found that she had become part of something wonderful. “When you work on a show, a family is created. You spend months working so hard together. I found a supportive community where there truly are no small roles,” remembers Ms. Czel.

in Les Miserables and Snug in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in her senior year.

While studying for her BS in Secondary Education/English, she returned to help on every show in whatever capacity was needed - lights, sound, photography, costumes, runner, assistant director. An opening in the IHS English Department was a dream opportunity which became reality when she was hired. As a faculty member she continued her involvement in the shows, eventually becoming producer for both the musical and the drama.

Ms. Czel helps foster the type of community that she found so affirming as a student herself. She acts as a mentor for many, helping them set realistic goals and supporting them through the hard work it takes to achieve those goals.

“She has a compassionate connection with her students that is fair-minded, honest, kind and fun! Students experience her dedication

Mrs. Wild added “Not everyone wants or needs the spotlight, and Kathleen has

been essential in recognizing those who prefer to work on the sets, lights or in stage management and assisting them with the complexities and responsibilities of their roles. It is really beautiful to witness - and exactly why we do what we do - to see students find something in themselves that they didn’t know they had.”

Quiet and observant, Ms. Czel sees what needs to be done and responds.

Experienced, she has served in nearly every capacity on stage, backstage, technical and artistic, and has been both the shy newbie and the star. Humble, her first object is the success of the show with a positive experience for each student involved.

“Kathleen seeks no recognition for what she does, however she should be recognized for the important role she plays in our production staff,” concludes Mrs. Wild. “In the midst of responding to the needs of students, parents, vendors and her directors, Kathleen stays calm and collected, guiding us through the many unexpected issues that arise in the course of a production.”

hether beginner or experienced, Immaculate students can learn and grow in the arts. Students cite the supportiveness of their peers and the interest faculty take in each individual student as key to creating an environment in which they can develop their understanding and capabilities in their chosen medium. Many students try something for the first time and are rewarded by learning something new about themselves. Others who have been doing something for years reach new heights in execution. The arts are an essential element in teaching the whole student, bringing about self-awareness and understanding of the world while honing personal skills that contribute to their success well beyond high school.

Below are some IHS students who received recognition for their work in the arts this year.

Band student Anna Flaherty ‘22 performed in the prestigious Western Region Music Festival on January 18 sponsored by the CT Music Educators Association and the National Association for Music Education. After achieving a high score in the Western Region auditions, she was selected to rehearse and perform with the 100-member All-Star Concert Band at the festival.

Elizabeth Flaherty ‘20 was recognized by the Connecticut Association of Schools for outstanding ability in music.

She is co-president of the a cappella club, a member of honors chorus and the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

She performs in the school musicals and plays piano and trumpet. The CAS recognizes students who “excel in the performing and visual arts and demonstrate scholarship and leadership.”

Robert Fontenelli ‘21 placed third in the student category at the Richter Association for the Arts 41st Annual Juried Art Show and Sale with his entry “Look Up,” a colored pencil and marker drawing.

Danielle Garcia ‘22 is a member of a tap dance team which won a bronze medal at the IDO World Tap Dance Championships, the “dance Olympics of tap,” in Riesa, Germany in November. The team performed in a formation category, requiring the team to execute line formations as the dancers move in perfect synchronization.

Abby Giansiracusa ‘21 was named Student of the Month for Fine Arts for her personal interest in music, the time and effort she puts into developing her voice and her desire to promote music education throughout the school. Student of the Month is a faculty-nominated and IHS Recognition Committee selected honor.

The committee takes nominations in a different subject area each month.

Anna Kopec ‘23 won a Pearl Award for her art submission to the 2019 Ocean Awareness Contest sponsored by Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs. Her drawing “Beautiful,” which focused on plastic pollution’s impact on oceans, was selected from more than 3,500 entries and is featured in Bow Seat’s gallery that showcases student advocacy artwork. She was also chosen to have an original drawing of a tiger displayed in the iCreate2020 exhibit at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, CT this summer.

Spencer Squitieri ‘21 won a prestigious Gold Key from the regional Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards competition for his short story “First Loves Always Run Away,” which looks at how the individual internal conflicts of two people in a committed relationship impact the future of the relationship.

Camille Vail ‘20 was recognized twice by the Danbury Cultural Commission. She received second place honors in the Short Story Writing Contest for her story “Despair” and third place honors in the Poetry Writing Contest for her poem “I See A World.”

Grace Tirado ‘21 received an Honorable Mention in the CT Regional Scholastic Art Awards competition, the largest juried student art exhibition in the State. Her graphic design artwork “Transportation to Mars” was selected from over 3,000 entries.

Elizabeth Varda ‘20 was recognized by the Connecticut Association of Schools for outstanding ability in art. She works in a variety of media, but her favorite is textiles/ fashion design and she has created costumes for Immaculate’s drama and musical productions, earning a Halo Award designing costumes for Pippin in Spring of 2019. The CAS recognizes students who “excel in the performing and visual arts and demonstrate scholarship and leadership.”

IHS faculty also receive recognition. Recently the National Association for Music Education - Council for Guitar Education chose music and band teacher Niall Reynolds to represent Connecticut in their series “50 States of Guitar Classes.” In his beginner and honors guitar classes students, after learning the basics, form bands which prepare pieces for performance.

FIELD HOCKEY SWC CHAMPIONS

T

he Lady Mustangs Field Hockey team kept the momentum from their CIAC Class S State Championship win last year and continued to dominate both offensively and defensively in the 2019-20 Season! Finishing their pre-season with an incredible 15-1 record, field hockey qualified for both the SWC and State tournaments.

Immaculate entered the SWC tournament as the No. 2 seed and shut out each opponent on their way to the championship game.

Then on a rainy afternoon in November, the Immaculate High School girls field hockey team didn’t let the cold, dreary weather dampen their drive and defeated New Milford 1-0, winning the SWC Championship!

Emma Halas ‘21 scored the only goal of the game and was named the tournament MVP. Emma reflects, “I am proud of the hard work that every single person put in. It was such a team effort. We’ve all worked so hard to get here... it was such a good moment. We came in with double the fire and we were ready to play.” This was the second

SWC Championship victory for the Lady Mustangs in the past 3 years having also won in 2017.

Lauren Oskam ‘20, one of Connecticut’s top goalies, did not let a single ball get into her net for the entire tournament! Coach Shannon Horosky says, “I think one of Lauren’s key strengths is her game sense and her command of our field. She is a very vocal goalie and she directs our defense to where she needs them to be. She also has great movement, something that I attribute to her playing ice hockey. She is quick and smart in goal.”

The success of the field hockey team this season can be attributed to all its members. Special honors were awarded to the following players: Molly Coyle ‘20, Celia Preveza ‘21 and Lauren Oskam ‘20: All SWC and All State 1st Team; Emma Halas ‘21: All State 2nd Team and All Patriot; Abby Giansiracusa ‘21 and Victoria Bono ‘20: Honorable Mentions; Caroline Brown ‘20, Francesca Coppola ‘20, Alexys Garden ‘21 and Morgan Begler ‘21: All Patriot. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Girls Volleyball finished 17-7 and made their way to the State semifinals! The Lady Mustangs beat East Hampton 3-1 in the first round at home, then proceeded to win the next two games against Cromwell 3-2 and #2 Aerospace 3-0 on the road to advance to the State semifinals.This is Coach Caity Van Camp’s first year and the first time the volleyball program has advanced to the State semifinals in its six-year history! Seniors Alissa Brugnatelli, Gillian Chapleau, Elizabeth Flaherty, Emma Mortara, and Gabby Rynne have all been consistent players and leaders that helped fuel the team’s run to the State semifinals. Congratulations to Aleksandra Box ‘21, the first IHS volleyball player to be named to the Connecticut All-State Girls Volleyball Class S Second Team, All-SWC First Team and AllTournament honors.

BOYS BASKETBALL The boys basketball team started its season capturing the Candlewood Classic Championship. Sebastian Parenti ‘21 and Diego Echavarria ‘20 were awarded All-Tournament honors for their efforts, while Sean Guiry ‘20 was named Candlewood Classic MVP. They were named the 2020 Patriot Division Champions for the South Western Conference with a final season record of 21-2.

Led by senior captains Sean Guiry, Joey Rios, Diego Echavarria, the #1 seeded Mustangs had 19 straight wins going into the SWC tournament setting a school record. They finished runners-up in the SWC final to Kolbe Cathedral. Heading into the Division I State tournament the #4 ranked Mustangs were set to play in the semifinals on their run to a fourth State Championship title when their season was cut short due to COVID-19. The Immaculate’s boys basketball program, coached by Nelson Mingachos for the past 14 years, was ranked #8 in the Top 10 Most Dominant CT High School Boys Basketball Programs of the Decade by MaxPreps.

BOYS AND GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY The boys and girls cross country teams finished the regular season as Patriot Division Champions! The girls team was the SWC runnerup. Junior Ailene Doherty and sophomore Kayla Ondy finished in the top 10 with Ailene finishing 4th and Kayla finishing 6th. The girls finished second in the Class “SS” State Championship race, with great finishes from Ailene Doherty ‘21 (2nd), Kayla Ondy ‘22 (5th), Keelin Bremner ‘23 (9th) and Brigid Gage ‘20 (11th). The girls also qualified to compete in the State Open and New England Championships meets. The boys team placed 5th in the SWC Championship, with James Sullivan ‘20 finishing 3rd, Drew Mitchell ‘20, and Ryan McNerney ‘20 followed in 13th and 18th place. In the Class “SS” State Championship Meet, James was in the Top 10 with a 6th place finish!

Joe Robinson Receives Ice Hockey Award Congratulations to Joe Robinson ‘20 for receiving the Hobey Baker High School Character Award for outstanding individual performance on and off the ice. The award is given to high school hockey players who exemplify the Hobey Baker ideal that “Character Builds Excellence,” and recipients must show coachability, strength of character, integrity, commitment, teamwork, community leadership and outstanding sportsmanship.

Coach Brian Hayes Named Coach of the Year Coach Brian Hayes received the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Award for Outstanding Coach of the Year for Girls Cross Country. This is his second big honor in two years, as last year he was named the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association’s Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year for Connecticut.

Coach Hayes has led our girls and boys cross country, indoor track and track & field teams to many victories including State championships since he began coaching at Immaculate in 2004.

aledictorian Hunter Kirkman will attend Northeastern University in the Honors Program and major in Mechanical Engineering. Hunter is a Distinguished Honors student, a recipient of the 2019 Carson Scholarship, a National Merit Scholarship Program Finalist with a perfect SAT math score of 800 and received a National Merit Corporate Scholarship from Northeastern University, as well as the Gregory K. LiVolsi Memorial Scholarship and the Walter J. Szewczuk Memorial Scholarship. He is also a Harvard Book Award recipient, and received the IHS Student Citizenship and Outstanding Senior awards and the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Hunter is a member of the National Honor Society, the Mu Alpha Theta Math National Honor

Society, the Science National Honor Society and the English National Honor Society. Hunter has served on the Student Council, as President of Campus Ministry, as a member of the Peer Leadership Club, Key Club and Engineering Club and as a Student Ambassador.

alutatorian Sean Guiry will attend Northeastern University, where he received a Dean’s Scholarship, and major in Computer Science and Computer Engineering. At Immaculate, Sean is a Distinguished Honors student and a member/ treasurer of the National Honor Society and the Science National Honor Society. He received the National Honor Society Officers Award, the Outstanding Senior Award and Walter J. Szewczuk Memorial Scholarship, Sean is a talented pianist and a three-sport athlete, having played varsity soccer, basketball and outdoor track for Immaculate, and was named a Scholar Athlete by the CAS-CIAC and was selected to the 2020 Boys

Basketball All-State D1 Team and named by GameTimeCT to the All-State Boys Basketball Second Team. Sean has received the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the Rensselaer Medal for his dedication and excellence in science and math.

Dear Mustang Family, This past year has been one full of obstacles and challenges. More importantly, it was a year of accomplishments in the face of adversity.

As a parent, I am grateful for the seamless transition from in-class learning to the virtual classroom. Immaculate was ready to face and overcome the challenges before it. The school was technologically ready, but even more critical to its success were an administration and faculty who were prepared, flexible, and put the needs of the students first. Thank you!

As an Immaculate High School graduate, I am proud to say that, for the past several years, we have experienced an increase in alumni support and participation. Alumni engagement is critical to the long-term health and success of our school.

As the School Advisory Board Chair, I want to thank the members of the board, committee members, the Mustang All Sport Club (MASC), Immaculate Parent Association (IPA) and parent volunteers. It is our volunteer base that keeps Immaculate moving forward, and I am appreciative of each and every one of you.

Finally, as a Catholic, I am grateful for our faith. When a member of our Mustang family is faced with personal tragedy, our extended family comes together in love, support, and prayer.

School Advisory Board The School Advisory Board represents the institution of the Diocese of Bridgeport and is under the authority of the Office of Education of the Diocese of Bridgeport. The purpose of the School Advisory Board is to provide leadership to foster an environment which provides underlying Catholic values, long term strategic planning and financial stability.

The role of the School Advisory Board complements the school’s mission, which is to nurture and foster the spiritual, moral, intellectual, physical and social growth of the student through its religious and academic curriculum and extracurricular programs. e can’t thank the administration enough for the education and values IHS provided our two kids. IHS teachers and administrators took a personal interest in our kids. Every Mustang is encouraged to explore their potential, whether it is trying a new sport or participating in a club. Values of respect, compassion, philanthropy, and more are taught at Immaculate through the many traditions and commitments to community service. Our son, David ‘17, credits Immaculate with preparing him well for his coming degree in Computer Science from Fordham University. Victoria ‘20, is our second and sadly for us, our final Immaculate graduate. She’s headed to Fairfield University this fall. Victoria was accepted to Fairfield’s honors program for which she proudly credits her Immaculate education in helping reach this goal.

We are forever grateful for the spiritual lessons instilled in our kids and the poise they gained as proud Immaculate Mustangs. And because of our great experiences, we will always give to the Immaculate Fund.

Why I Give

I

t was during the 50th anniversary celebration weekend in 2015 that I was hit with the want to do more for Immaculate. “So much is happening here and I didn’t know. People from farther away are doing so much, I live so close and don’t do anything” were thoughts that went through my head during the reunion party. Some short months later the Class of 1993 was in need of a new class representative, and it was my chance to do something! I became a co-rep, started participating in events and donating financially. Over the past few years I have seen first hand how much IHS has advanced and improved from the classes being offered, sports, clubs and activities to the building itself, the classrooms, the fields and even the parking lot. Have you seen the Chapel lately?! I am constantly impressed with what continues to be done to make the school the best it can be. But what really shines through are the students – all the physical changes don’t mean anything unless you see the effects on the students. These young adults are so ambitious, thoughtful and grateful. I believe they are aware of how fortunate they are to have so much available to them. I’d like to think I didn’t take my time at IHS for granted, but I now realize all it took to make it happen. And I want to keep making it happen for the students now and in the future. So, this past Fall on The Day of Giving I decided to make my donation a recurring one. It’s such a simple way to give a little (or a lot) each month based on my total donation. It has been such a rewarding experience to reconnect with Immaculate and to know that what I can do is making a difference.

Veterans Hill Of Honor Flags Immaculate’s Veterans Hill of Honor featured American flags adorned with ribbons carrying the names of IHS alumni, friends and family members who have served in the U.S. armed forces. The flags were proudly displayed on Immaculate’s front lawn during Veterans Day week to commemorate all who have served to protect our peace and freedom. The donations made in honor of the men and women named on the flags, totaling $1,440, were donated to the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs for its veterans assistance programs.

Why I Give Keeping a Friend’s Memory Alive

I

n 2014, alumnus Derek Schmuecker (pictured left) died suddenly at the age of 25 while playing lacrosse with his friends, something that he truly loved. Now his friends keep Derek’s memory alive and well every year through their fantasy football league which they named after his motto “Livin’ the Dream!”

His former classmate and friend Brian McGrath shared that “Derek Schmuecker ’08 was an amazing guy who was filled with life and was a friend to many. He was as kind as he was funny and had a personality that would light up a room. He was also a member of our league from the very beginning, so we all agreed that every year we would put half of the league winnings towards the ‘Derek Schmuecker Memorial Fund’ to support IHS students.” The other members include Immaculate alumni Dan Kennedy ‘08, Ian Christe ‘08, Matt Palmer ‘08, John Fitzgerald ‘08, Sean McGrath ‘10, John O’Hara ‘10 and Brendan McGrath ‘13. The annual donations made by these Mustang alumni has kept Derek’s memory alive while helping to provide the gift of an Immaculate education to a deserving student.

wo years ago, Immaculate embarked on a project to refurbish the chapel. Leaking windows and a dysfunctional heating system had precipitated a closer look at the overall condition of the chapel which identified other needed repairs and the need to realign the ornamentation of the chapel with Catholic guidelines and tradition. A long-standing intention to honor our founder Monsignor John B. Hossan found its fulfilment in dedicating and naming the chapel for him in May of 2019, the first anniversary of his passing.

Work on the project continued this year. In Fall 2019 the heating system was replaced with baseboard heating. In May 2020 the altar was raised, and new carpeting was installed through a gift from Msgr. Hossan’s estate and the generosity of Colonial Carpet and Flooring of Bethel, owned by the Sanchez family, Segundo, Carmen, Chris ‘19 and Lynn ‘22. Mr. Sanchez also built and installed a new tabernacle altar.

Pews were installed to give the chapel a more formal, church-like atmosphere. Saint Mary Parish of Ridgefield gave us pews removed from their church during their own renovation project. Using the funds from those who gave gifts specifically for a pew, Immaculate transported, refurbished, customized and installed the pews from Saint Mary Parish more economically than purchasing new custom-

Over the summer of 2020 we will be replacing the windows along the side walls with new weathertight ones that will complement the stained glass windows depicting Mary and Joseph which were installed last year. Robert ‘72 and Gail Hossan, the Estate of Msgr.

Why We Believe in IHS A STORY OF FRIENDSHIP AND MUSTANG PRIDE Meg (Losee) Riefberg ’80 and Lisa (Guenther) Foley ’82 both sent their children to St. Gregory the Great School and then to Immaculate High School. For these two alumnae, Immaculate has been a family affair and their friendship has seen the impact of a strong school community which fosters lifelong ties. “My life and the lives of my children, Sean ’07 and Christian ’09, have been enriched from our relationships with our classmates from Immaculate,” said Meg. Growing up it was very important to Lisa’s mother that she and her siblings receive a Catholic school education.

Her mother believed that IHS would provide them with not only an excellent education surrounded by faith, but it would also be a place where morals and good behavior were instilled. “Immaculate was exactly that, and was also a place where I made many lifelong friendships. I absolutely loved my experience as a Mustang!” said Lisa.

For Lisa, there was no question but to send her children to IHS. “Immaculate has done an amazing job staying true to their traditional values of faith and family, while making changes that are important to today’s society,” she shared.

Lisa and her husband James ‘75 were married amongst their closest friends, most of whom also graduated from Immaculate. They watched their children Dayna ’07, Christina ’10 and James ‘12 make the same special friendships, including with Meg’s sons, while they were at Immaculate. “Many of their friends’ parents were people we went to high school with, and it was a chance for us all to reconnect,” she said. Lisa’s daughter Dayna recently married Tyler Kuzniewski ‘01 and they too were surrounded by a wedding party that were mostly fellow Mustangs. “It is such a beautiful and rare thing to see the tradition carry on that way, and I feel so blessed to be part of the Immaculate family,” Lisa enthused.

Meg’s sons get together the Saturday after Thanksgiving every year to play in the Alumni Football Game with former teammates before heading to Pippa’s. It’s a tradition that they all look forward to and just like for Meg and Lisa, their children are now experiencing the weddings and babies of their IHS classmates. “It seems that life has come full circle for us and that all roads lead back to Immaculate,” stated Meg. She believes that an Immaculate education transcends academics because students learn far more from their teachers than the stated curriculum.

Through social media, Meg and Lisa have reconnected with many members of the Immaculate family and feel a bond from their high school years that Meg described as comforting. Thanks to Facebook, a group of alumnae from the Class of ’80 gathered on Block Island for their 50th birthdays years ago and became a close group once again.

These two Mustangs define the sense of family which is often associated with Immaculate High School. “I felt supported as a student and still feel that support today.

As a result, Lisa and I remain involved with the school because we want to see it flourish,” Meg said. Thank you to both Lisa and Meg for passing down the tradition of an Immaculate education to their children and for remaining connected with our school. Once a Mustang, always a Mustang!

David Parks ‘99 of Spin Doctor Entertainment received the “Best of the Knot 2020” award for the 9th straight year.

Joe Magrino ‘11, a grad student in the Kelch Lab, won a poster award at the 24th Annual UMMS Research Retreat held recently at UMass Amherst.

The poster, titled “Two PCNA variants drive the same disease through separate mechanisms,” was about looking at disease causing mutation in a key DNA replication protein -PCNA. The work will give insight into the mechanisms that lead to complex diseases like cancer.

Patrick Clarke ’11, is a third year medical student at the UVM Larner College of Medicine and spent last summer in Odense, Denmark doing urology and pediatric surgery research. He was also elected President of the Student Body for his 4th year, and he’ll graduate with his M.D. in May 2022.

Matt Frizzell is a 2011 graduate of Immaculate High School serving as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology following IHS and received his Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology along with his military commission. Presently, he is assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron at Ramstein Air Base, Germany as a C-130J Pilot & Aircraft Commander. His previous assignments include Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas and Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas where he trained on T-6A, T-38C, & C-130J aircraft.

Flyover: On June 6th, 2020, the 37th Airlift Squadron launched eight C-130J Super Hercules aircraft to commemorate the 76th anniversary of D-Day. The 8-ship formation, commanded 50

by Lieutenant Frizzell, executed flyovers and low levels across several different locations in France in remembrance of the Allied effort during World War II. The 37th Airlift Squadron, then called the 37th Troop Carrier Squadron, was one of the most successful units conducting paratroop drops on June 6th, 1944 aiding in the liberation of the French countryside.

Emily Fredette ‘12 joined Forrester Construction as a field engineer after graduating from The Catholic University of America with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Engineering Project Management.

Michael Hudak ‘14 completed his bachelor’s degree at Florida State University while working full-time at WCTV, the CBS affiliate in Tallahassee, Florida.

Michael traveled to Puerto Rico for special coverage after Hurricane Maria which helped WCTV win the “Service To America” Award in 2019.

Personal honors include being a 2019 finalist for Associated Press Sportscaster of the Year in Florida, winning the 2020 AP Digital Journalist of the Year in the state of Florida, and being named a finalist for 2020 AP Anchor of the Year and 2020 AP Sports Feature of the Year.

While at IHS, Michael was heavily involved in the fine arts program, as well as sometimes announcing for the sports teams.

Lauren Brugnatelli ‘15 graduated from the Culinary Institute of America, cum laude, with her Associate’s degree in Baking and Pastry Arts and her Bachelor’s degree in Business Management in July 2018.

As a senior chemistry major at St. Bonaventure University, Madeleine Wedvik ‘16 co-authored an article that was published in the open-access journal Chemistry Teacher International.

Lorena Curtis ‘16, graduated from Boston College and won the school’s St. Ignatius Award for Personal Development at BC. The award goes to the student whose values and ideals have most clearly undergone a transformation and/or deepening through his or her participation in co-curricular activities.

Taylor Guth ‘16 graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame with a BS in neuroscience and a minor in Compassionate Care in Medicine. Even since their move from the Danbury area to Nashville, TN, they remain connected to Immaculate. Jimmy has made personal training his life’s passion. He has owned his own personal training business for over 20 years, and while uprooting his business to move to Nashville wasn’t easy, he quickly got his business thriving again with a new mix of clientele. Nic started working for Marriott International immediately after graduating college, and recently celebrated 25 years with the company. Marriott has taken her up and down the east coast, however her favorite assignment was the one that brought her back to Connecticut where she was able to reconnect with her fellow Mustangs! Since moving to Nashville in 2016, they have been able to enjoy time together taking in all the sports, music and entertainment Music City has to offer!

When you hear “Mustang Pride” what does that mean to you?

Going to Immaculate High School not only shaped our minds, but it also allowed us to grow physically and spiritually. We weren’t just taught to memorize information...we were taught to think. And lastly, Immaculate was more than a school...it was a community...a family. There is no way to measure how great of an impact going to Immaculate has had on our lives.

We more than “hear” Mustang Pride...we feel it! We are very proud to be alumni of a school that molded our intellect and helped instill the important values in life. Our high school not only bonded us as a collective community, but it also helped build us individually as leaders. Between the academic skills we learned, the great sports programs we took part in, the values and virtues we acquired, and the comradery developed, we can’t be anything but Mustang Proud!

What has the relationship with fellow alumni meant to you since graduating, and why has it been important to stay connected?

Some of us have stayed close to our hometown and some of us have moved away. Near or far, life inevitably challenges us to juggle priorities of family, work, faith and friendships. However, when we are able to reconnect with our fellow classmates, whether it be for class reunions/alumni events, celebrations or somber occasions, there is always a sense of our roots, a sense of our younger innocent selves that brings us back to a time in our lives that shaped us. Connecting with our fellow classmates always brings us back “home,” regardless how near or far we live.

When considering your annual charitable donations, why is supporting IHS always in the forefront of your mind?

When an institution has such a positive impact on your life, it’s natural to want to give back to it. Not only as a way of saying “thank you” and to show that we are grateful, but also to ensure that generations to come can experience the same positive life building education we did. Part of being Mustang Proud is making sure that we pay it forward.

Mikhaela McFarlin ’17 graduated one full year in advance from Western Connecticut State University this May with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Humanistic Studies. She will be attending the University of Albany’s Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program.

Maureen ’77 and Kathryn ’15 Kerins ~

Maureen (Elston) Kerins ’77 earned a Master’s degree in Nursing in 1987 from Western Connecticut State University, but just this past May received her Advanced Practice Registered Nurse degree/advanced certification. This is an advanced degree in nursing that provides more opportunities and an elevated level of responsibility and accountability.

“It was something I always wanted, but knew I had to wait until I could manage the time commitment along with life’s other responsibilities,” said Maureen (Mo).

Those responsibilities included raising five Mustangs: Johnny ’12, Ricky ’13, Kathryn ’15, Brian ’17 and Sean ’22.

After graduating from Immaculate, Mo’s daughter Kathryn headed to Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY and graduated in May 2019 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing. Since passing her licensure exam, she has been working on the 3:00 -11:00pm shift at Danbury

Hospital on the cardiology floor. Kathryn has been thrown into the pandemic working with and seeing things she has never been trained for.

“It’s a joy working with my daughter at Danbury Hospital. We can ‘talk shop’ after our shifts are over,” shared Mo, adding “Kathryn has established herself as a leader and a professional all on her own, which has made me so proud of all her accomplishments. It has been an honor and delight to work alongside her and get to see firsthand her success at the bedside.

She is happy and fulfilled and brings that to each and every one of her patients and fellow staff members.”

We are so proud of the extraordinary courage and commitment shown by Mo and Kathryn, along with all those essential workers in our Immaculate family and beyond. We are grateful for all of your sacrifices during the coronavirus pandemic and we continue to keep you in our most fervent prayers.

With their Senior Class Gift, the Class of 2020 have honored their classmate Liam Devine who passed away in January in a tragic accident. The funds were used to purchase four granite benches which surround a beautiful tree donated by Hollandia Nursery and planted in Liam’s memory near the student entrance of the school. Liam will forever be fondly remembered by his classmates.

“Chris and I have so many cherished memories from our days at IHS that when it came time to choosing a high school for our oldest, it was only natural that Immaculate was our first choice. We couldn’t have been happier that it was our son’s and both of his sisters’ first choice as well! As our youngest graduates, it is with mixed emotions that we say good-bye. Teachers, coaches, fellow parents and alumni are all a second family to us, and will be truly missed!
