In the Roman Catholic tradition, Immaculate High School fosters the development of the whole student by nurturing individual spiritual, moral, intellectual, physical and social growth through an academically rigorous college preparatory curriculum that encourages respect, responsibility, reverence, creativity and leadership.

Letter from the President It is with great pride that we share an abundance of good news about Immaculate High School. Thanks to our parents, faculty, staff, alumni and friends, we have had the privilege to move forward with our Excellence By Design Strategic Plan. Our commitment to fulfill established infrastructure, program and financial stability goals has become a reality. Focused on fostering our Catholic Identity, our alumni launched a campaign to refurbish our Chapel, the foundation of our schoolâ€™s charism, in honor of our first school Principal, Msgr. John Hossan. Two beautiful original handmade stained glass windows of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Joseph, new Stations of the Cross and handcrafted crucifix from Italy, as well as new cruets, flagon, lavabo and candle stands are some of the special new Chapel additions. Donations to purchase new pews and additional windows are also being made. As a result of redefining and reevaluating our offerings these past four years, programs and extracurricular activities continue to expand to support our student college readiness plans. Our growing technology, engineering, science and fine arts programs afforded students opportunities through which they received exceptional recognition. A composite of approximately 98% of the 124 members of the Class of 2019 were offered a total of $27 million in college scholarships and awards; six students achieved a perfect score on the math SAT section and one student achieved a perfect ACT score. Continuing to uphold the vision of our founders and our school mission, we look forward to offering our new Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program and new Music Production Lab as well as additional engineering and computer technology courses. ur founding Principal believed in the importance of an exceptional Catholic high school education and was devoted to making this happen. When the doors to Immaculate High School opened on July 1, 1962 it was because of his steadfast love of the Lord and of education and his abilities to bring people together for a common good. He was able to share his vision with families and parishes, resulting in the raising of funds to build a whole new school. Reverend Monsignor John B. Hossan crowned this glory with the statue of Mary that stands watchfully over Immaculate High School until this day. 6 To pay the utmost respect to our late founder, on May 19, 2019 our

school’s Chapel was dedicated to Monsignor Hossan after renovation work. With this dedication and the addition of two new stained glass windows, a crucifix and additional furnishings, the heart of our school now better reflects our Catholicism and honors our cherished founder and first Principal in a fitting manner. The windows depict the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Saint Joseph and were a gracious gift from Immaculate alumna Jo-Anne (Tomanio) Price ‘66. Immaculate is grateful to The Most Reverend Frank J. Caggiano, Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport, who came to Immaculate High School to bless the windows in front of faculty, staff

and friends. In addition, Kamil Salame ‘86 donated a hand-painted Italian crucifix to further enhance the aged Chapel’s functionality and beauty. Immaculate High School is incredibly grateful to Jo-Anne and Kamil for their sacrificial gifts, as well as to the many donors for their contributions, including those who supported reunion class gifts earmarked for the Chapel renovation. (see list of all donor gifts on pg. 39) Another special and very personal item was gifted during the Chapel Dedication Mass and Ceremony when the Hossan family donated Monsignor Hossan’s personal chalice, which he received the day of his

ordination from his parents. This special chalice will be used at future Masses to remind everyone of Monsignor Hossan’s undying love for Immaculate and its students. “For over 50 years, Mass has been celebrated in this Chapel. This renovation assures that our school community will be able to celebrate Mass here for many years to come. Our founding Principal, Monsignor Hossan, was instrumental in constructing this foundational place for prayer and reflection. This dedication honors his legacy and dedication to the charism of our school,” said Mary Maloney, President of Immaculate High School. 7

n the midst of Immaculate’s outstanding academic, fine arts and athletic programs is the heart and soul of the school, learning about our Catholic faith. For over thirty years, the person at the center of overseeing students’ spiritual growth and preserving the school’s Catholic identity is Father James Cole. A beloved teacher of Religion, English and Latin, Father Cole has also provided spiritual direction, mentorship and support to the entire student body. He has shared his faith and wisdom with students in the classroom, in small group discussions and always made time in his schedule for those who needed him. Father Cole celebrated countless Masses, at which he gave inspiring homilies and challenged students to share their religious reverence and knowledge, practice their faith and love being Catholic.

His journey began at Immaculate in 1989 as Spiritual Director. Two years later, Father Cole felt that he was “missing another calling by not teaching,” so he started teaching English and Religion to Immaculate

students. He also taught Latin for many years, and those who took these classes can attest to this special, now-unique talent. Support of the students’ academic and spiritual growth was always paramount to Father Cole. He always had one eye on the educational needs of students and the other on their religious growth and understanding of what it means to be a good Catholic. “I believe in instilling in students the fact that they can do both here,” said Father Cole. Studying often and beyond what is taught in class to broaden the mind is important to learning, according to Father Cole. “I tell students that they need to know more than the teacher can ever ask them -- students constantly need to be responsible for nurturing the expansion of their knowledge,” Father Cole said. Father Cole believes being a part of Immaculate High School is an experience he will never forget and he has enjoyed his time here. “Because we are unique, we can give students an experience no one else can.

We give them freedom of thought and teach them that while they are not exclusive, they are special,” he said. He noted that because Immaculate is not dependent on public funding, Immaculate and the Diocesan schools can teach both modern academics and religious spirituality in their own special ways. One of the perks of the job is getting to know so many wonderful, diverse people with a common goal of improving themselves and the world. Father Cole estimates that he has taught over 3,000 students in his 30 years at Immaculate, plus hundreds more in his first years of teaching after nine years as an assistant pastor. “I’ve known a lot of great people...many who have graduated and gone onto to make a difference in their communities, both locally and nationally. So we at Immaculate have done something right,” he noted. He recalls the days when Monsignor John Hossan founded Immaculate High School and Robert Gerwien was Principal, and feels the biggest strength of Immaculate is the faculty.

Making History at Immaculate

“What they established really survives today -- and we have sustained ourselves through all the internal and external changes over the years in large part due to the teachers. The teachers have maintained the academic integrity of this school,” said Father Cole. Father Cole is the only Diocesan priest that teaches full-time, a blessing for Immaculate High School. Before coming to Immaculate he taught at Stamford Catholic High School (now Trinity Catholic High School), and prior to that he was a parish priest at Our Lady of Grace in Stratford and St. Peter Church in Danbury. But the calling to teach was one he couldn’t deny. “In 1980 there was more of an option for a priest to go into a special ministry, so I chose education since I have wanted to be a priest and a teacher since childhood,” Father Cole explained. Growing up in Newark, NJ, Father Cole attended Seton Hall Prep and Seton Hall University and graduated from St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, NY. He was ordained a Catholic priest on May 15, 1971 and it was his choice to come to the Diocese of Bridgeport. What he will miss most as he journeys into a retirement of possible travel and writing are the students and the teachers. “For a while, I was the students’ guide, and I enjoyed getting to know them. And I enjoyed sharing in conversations about the realities of life with the teachers -- one of my favorite things was having lunch together and making light of the trouble of the day,” Father Cole shared. Father Cole also loved attending Immaculate baseball games, and tried to get to every game possible - “I wasn’t a fair-weather fan, I wanted them to count on me and see me as part of the team,” he said. Father Cole may be departing, but he is leaving us a few words of wisdom. “Don’t make changes without understanding what those changes mean, always create and maintain your own sense of identity, and don’t take oneself too seriously,” he implored. And he feels strongly about traditions and what they mean to Immaculate. “Traditions give us a sense of identity and remind us of who we really are -- Immaculate has a great set of traditions that should be maintained and embellished but never discarded, so that we don’t lose focus on who we really are,” Father Cole advised. Thank you Father Cole for this wisdom, for your years of service, for guiding our students and supporting our staff, for being a pleasant addition to the faculty room and for helping us to keep our Catholic faith and identity strong. You will be missed and remembered always!

eff Vingo has always been passionate about teaching history to Catholic school students. During his ten years at Immaculate High School, Mr. Vingo instilled the lessons learned from history as well as historical facts. He also provided students with learning experiences outside the classroom to expand their knowledge and hone their related talents. As a UCONN adjunct professor, Mr. Vingo taught AP US History, commonly known by his students as APUSH. He also taught AP Psych to hundreds of students over the years. Mr. Vingo was also advisor for the Model UN team and a former Immaculate softball coach. He enjoyed spending time as teacher with his students both in and out of the classroom. Mr. Vingo shares that his favorite times were “taking the Model UN team to compete in Boston and Washington, DC and chaperoning APUSH trips to historical sights such as Hyde Park, Gettysburg, the Amish country and Philadelphia. Mr. Vingo chose to teach solely in Catholic schools because he believes our schools have a “better feel for what education is really all

about,” and are more focused on teaching to learn than teaching to the test. “We provide a true liberal arts education and we can start each class with a prayer,” he said. “And, besides that, we are 21st Century. Immaculate has modern, state-of-theart technology to assist teachers to help students learn, and the faculty embrace it and use it daily,” Mr. Vingo added. He noted that Immaculate High School made many such advancements since he first started at Immaculate and continues with this commitment year after year. The heart of the classroom is still the teacher. Mr. Vingo epitomizes the calibre of teachers Immaculate has in its classrooms: devotion to his students, quality teaching due to advanced education with a Master’s degree and long-term experience, extracurricular commitment to students by advising clubs and activities, and joy in seeing students learn.

Mrs. Antonios began teaching Intro to Engineering Design in the 201718 school year and this year added Principles of Engineering. “Immaculate felt strongly about adding an engineering component to our STEM program because we wanted to make the students ready for STEM-related careers in the workforce, especially in engineering, where the demand is high,” she said. The engineering classes allow students to explore the many different fields of engineering. “In class we use a project and problem-solving based approach that will make them ready for other careers as well, including teaching critical thinking skills,” Mrs. Antonios explained. Part of the curriculum is also designed to let students explore the different types of engineering, including the aspects of the career such as salary and demand, and allow them to meet engineers from various fields. “Students were surprised about how many different

Mrs. Antonios brings a wealth of experience into her teaching as she holds both a BA and MA in Structural Engineering. “ I worked as a Structural Engineer then I swithed to teaching because I love sharing my knowledge with others and having a positive effect on youth,” said Mrs. Antonios. “At Immaculate I get to combine two things that I love, engineering and teaching,” she said.

This school year Mrs. Antonios began advising the new IHS Brave Engineers Club, and the results were beyond anyone’s expectations. The team of engineering students won two major awards representing the State of Connecticut at the 2019 National Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) in Washington, DC after winning the State competition. The Brave Engineers Team

captured the National Best First Year Team Award for scoring the highest both in the writing and oral sections. The team also won the International Merit Award -- Judges Award, an award for an exceptional team that the judges felt “had qualities that were not captured by other awards but were worthy of recognition.” This was the first time Immaculate sent a team to the State and National competitions; the team members were James Vigar ‘19 (team leader, theory of operation and design), Keelan Doherty ‘20 (design engineer), Yuxuan Brittany Hu ‘19 (business case), Ruining Nancy Yang ‘19 (safety manager) and Mackenzy Garden ‘19 (graphic design and coordination). The team is also mentored by Mr. Syed Raza and Mrs. Ruthanne Szumski of Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Engines. “The IHS team was the only U.S. team to get two Merit Awards. But more important, the students gained a unique experience that exposed them to real world problems and gave them the opportunity to acquire professional skills,” she noted. The RWDC 2019 Challenge provides high school students the chance to work on realworld engineering challenges using professional science and engineering resources in a virtual environment by applying classroom lessons to real-life challenges found in the working world. The challenge was titled the “Unmanned Aerial System Challenge: Pilot Urban Survey Mission” and required participating teams to design a drone within certain constraints to survey the health of plants in an urban setting. The team also had to follow safety guidelines and build a business case that is profitable to the city and the company. Mrs. Antonios was proud of all of her engineering students, as everyone passed their assessments. In addition to serving as advisor to Brave Engineers Club, she is also advisor to the Math League Cub and co-advisor to Immaculate’s Math National Honor Society Mu Alpha Theta. She is also a proud mother to past, current and future students Rodolph ‘19, Stephanie ‘22 and Raphael ‘26. 11

THE FINE ARTS

Developing Creativity is an Essential Part of a Well-Rounded Education

ncreasing numbers of students are arriving at Immaculate with experience and aspirations in fine arts disciplines. The connection between students looking for new ways to express themselves and enthusiastic faculty seeking ways to help them grow has been a productive combination and what was a strong but small fine arts program is adding courses, technology and extra-curricular opportunities. Over the last few years, fine arts elective offerings have blossomed from five CP courses, one honors and one AP course into twenty-three options that cover three disciplines - visual arts, choral music and instrumental music - at the CP, Honors, AP and college credit levels. The growth has spilled over into the extra-curricular realm as well - new fine arts related clubs have been added to the list of options available to students outside of class. “The Fine Arts faculty is a cohesive group. As teachers we play off each other’s strengths to achieve our vision of a dynamic program that has breadth and depth, offering students education in the basics coupled with opportunities for progression and professional development over their four years,” said Samantha Kohler, Fine Arts Chairman. Graphic Design - Parochial to Professional Three graphic design courses offer students a continuum of experience which leads them from learning design programs and creating for themselves, through creating something for a third party where the instructor is the intermediary, to working directly with a client to design and produce something that meets the client’s needs. They must learn to put their talents to use in service of another’s vision - which may not always mesh with the student’s artistic point of view. It is an exercise in professional maturation. In addition, students who complete Graphics III are eligible for one semester of college credit in digital design from Western Connecticut State University which will also transfer to 96% of U.S. colleges. Some students who developed professional Graphics III projects include: Joshua Bahn ‘19 who created a video and web pages for a realtor; Anthony Dascano ‘19 who redesigned his father’s business website; and Sophia Pilla ‘19 who prepared a marketing campaign and magazine ad for her father’s company which will be published in a number of magazines.

Visual Arts - Foundations Support Creativity The visual arts courses, Introduction to Art, 3-D Sculpture and Design and Drawing and Painting, continue to provide an exceptional foundation in the basics and process of creating artworks, leading to senior electives of AP Studio Art or Honors Portfolio Development, where students develop a body of work that can be used when applying to college. The College Board has completely revamped the AP Art course for the coming year, requiring fewer pieces and focusing more strongly on the process of developing each piece. This change is completely on track with the focus of the art electives that precede it and will allow seniors a deeper learning experience while preparing their portfolios. 13

Music

Accessible for All

As with the visual arts, the music curriculum has been expanded and can take students from no background in music to honors level singing, playing and composing. Mixed Chorus, Concert Choir (H), Concert Band and Guitar Ensemble have been joined by Beginning Piano & Piano II, Music Appreciation, Music Theory (H), Digital Sound Design (H) and honors levels for Concert Band and Guitar Ensemble. Student musicians have access to an in-house recording studio, built about six years ago, and a recently added piano lab. An exciting new development is the installation in 2019 of a state-of-the-art music production lab, funded in part through a grant from Foundations in Education - a non-profit initiative that assists the Diocese of Bridgeport’s ongoing mission to support Catholic education in Fairfield County. Instrumental music teacher Niall Reynolds received the grant, “I am very excited to bring music education into the 21st century and to also attract students who have previously not thought of themselves as musicians. I also want to change the prevailing societal attitude that music is mysterious, inaccessible and obscure -- the music production lab can remove the barriers of fear and anxiety that sometimes accompanies music education,” he said.

Performance and Presentation - Enriching the School Community

What would be the ultimate value of the arts if artists did not share the fruits of their work? Our school community is blessed with opportunities to enjoy the talents and witness the growth of students throughout the year. Annual offerings include the Christmas and Spring Concerts, the Fall Drama and Spring Musical, the talent show, (formerly known as Cabaret, newly minted this year as Immaculate’s Got Talent, and the annual Arts in the Park art show which showcases all the visual arts created by students currently in art classes, presented with musical accompaniment by the various school musical groups. This year also featured a Coffeehouse and an Open Mic Night as well as A Night of Comedy which was conceived and directed by senior Emilia McGuinness Getzinger. The evening included three one-act comedy plays and comedic songs and routines. Emilia wrote one of the one-acts herself. Drama Club worked with Campus Ministry and Concert Choir to present a moving Stations of the Cross service during Lent. Students also provide designs for event posters and the school Christmas card, create decorations for concerts and produce graduation lawn signs and t-shirts for Play for the Cure athletic games, and provide music for school Masses, events and ceremonies. IHS alumni came back for the annual Alumni Concert.

ALEXA WILD

Inspiring Students in the Classroom and on the Stage

o say that Alexa Wild teaches English at Immaculate High School is merely to state a fact without offering any hint of the impact that she has on the students in her charge. If you observe them participating in class exercises, seeking her company after school, working so hard together on the fall drama production and crying at the end of closing night, or making her classroom their first stop when coming back to visit as an alumni, you begin to understand that there is something special going on here. “Mrs. Wild has an interest in you as a person.” “Her room is a place where anyone can come in and get support.” “She wants you to do well and is always there for you.” These are the types of comments her former and current students make when asked about why so many love her. Her approach is simple, “I look at each individual as having something to offer,” and she encourages them to participate on that basis. She rewards effort. She also tells them the real-world value of what they are doing in class: “the skills they are learning - writing, speaking, professionalism - will help them share themselves and their ideas with the world in a coherent manner.” She truly wants each one of them to successfully share their gifts. She shares her passion for literature with her students, relating her personal feelings and insights into the purpose and meaning of the work being studied. Students respond to this openness. Even those who are not literary enthusiasts get into reading plays aloud in class. Students also appreciate that she is supportive of everything the school has going on. She talks events up in class and attends their games, shows, fundraisers and awards ceremonies. “I love to see students cheering other students on and teachers supporting the endeavors of their colleagues,” she says. Having been a theater nerd all her life, Mrs. Wild loves the opportunity she has at Immaculate to direct the fall drama. Here her insight into each student shines. “She finds lots of ways for people with different skill sets to be part of the creative process. She notices people, reaches out and tells them, ‘You should be part of the play,” relates Ilona Ludanyi ’18.

“I love to see students cheering other students on and teachers supporting the endeavors of their colleagues” Kathleen Czel ‘08, now a faculty member, remembers when Mrs. Wild directed her first play at Immaculate. She says, “It was clear that there were no small roles.” She appreciated the efforts Mrs. Wild made to build relationships with and among the supporting actors. “I felt noticed and appreciated.” As in the classroom, Wild sees the plays as an arena where she can provide challenge, opportunity and encouragement to students. She is more concerned with what would be good for each student’s growth than with pleasing any external entities, be they the audience or award judges. “It’s wonderful to see the students take pride in what they have put together despite the disadvantages of no auditorium, a small budget and the demands of difficult material, which is often Shakespeare. I especially like to see the success of students who are not planning a career in the theater, challenging themselves to do something they didn’t think they could do,” she says. Many students tell her that participating in the fall drama was the best thing they did in their whole four years.

Having served as Mrs. Wild’s producer on the shows for the last three years, Kathleen Czel is totally in support of her mission. As a colleague she tries to emulate her attitude and feels honored to work with her. “She is a teacher you want to stay in touch with after you leave the school because it’s clear that she cares. It’s not just a job for her.”

James Vigar ‘19 When reflecting on his time and accomplishments at IHS, James Vigar ‘19 explains, “the teachers, administration and students at Immaculate are incredibly supportive and caring and that gave me the confidence to try new things, take chances, and challenge myself to do more and better.” In his freshman year, James auditioned and was cast in the spring musical, Oklahoma which is when he began to look forward to each new challenge thanks to the support and encouragement he received. He continued to perform and during his senior year, James was nominated for a Halo award for best performance by an actor for his role as Mr. Webb in Our Town. Next challenge, James decided to enroll in Engineering classes at Immaculate and discovered his passion and career path. James was able to compete on Immaculate’s first engineering team in The Real World Design Challenge competition where he was the technical and engineering lead of a project tasked to design a drone that would scan the health of local vegetation. James’ team won the Connecticut State competition and went on to win the National Best First Team Award and the International Judges Award at the national level. Throughout his time at IHS, James continued to embrace challenges. He completed his Eagle Scout project, took an active part in organizing and facilitating Happening weekend retreats for teens, learned to play the bass clarinet and was awarded the Rotary Club of Danbury Student of the Month and IHS Citizenship Award for community service. James acclaims, “To me, all these accomplishments hold a special place in my heart and, if it wasn’t for the caring community at Immaculate, I may not have gotten as far as I have.” 17

NEW LEADERSHIP TEAM SET TO ADVANCE TRADITION OF ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE

elson Mingachos ‘89, respected alumnus and coach, became Immaculate’s Athletic Director on July 1, 2019 after serving as Interim Athletic Director since December 2018. Mr. Mingachos is also Immaculate’s boys basketball and girls soccer coach, with a long history of success. Since 2003, Mr. Mingachos has coached the IHS girls soccer teams to four SWC Championships and ten CIAC State Championships, and the boys basketball team to three CIAC State Championships and a SWC Championship. During the 2018-19 season Mr. Mingachos celebrated winning his 200th game with boys basketball. His recognitions include being a six-time SWC Coach of the Year as well as being named Coach of the Year by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association, the CT Girls Soccer Association, the CT

Sports Writer Alliance, and the Danbury News-Times Coach of the Year (four times). Teaming with Mr. Mingachos is Tye Mill, who has been appointed as the new Assistant Athletic Director and will share the responsibilities for facility management, player eligibility, social media and general communication. Together they have been able to revitalize the management of the athletic program by reviewing statistical data, incorporating best practices, instilling team captain leadership skills and soliciting student interests. Completing the IHS athletic management team is Athletic Trainer Kayla MacInnis, who is responsible for preventive and immediate athlete care as well as clinical evaluation and rehabilitation. In 2019-20, she will be working with students during the school day as well as being available at team competitions.

1. Immaculate boys basketball coach Nelson Mingachos who began coaching the program in 2005 earned his 200th career win. In that time he has claimed a trio of state championships (2012, 2016, 2018) and an SWC title (2012). 2. Girls Cross Country had an exceptional season finishing first in the Patriot Division and winning the SWC Championship, Class SS State Championship, State Open Runner-Up and finishing third at the New England Championship meet.

4. Angela Saidman ‘19 received All-State and Academic All-State for Outdoor Track, as well as All-New England and All-American this season.

6. Boys Golf competed at Tallwood Country Club where Jack Woods ‘19, Ryan Fanella ‘19, Daniel Leblanc ‘21, Nick Iannetta ‘21 and Logan McAloon ‘21 won the Class S State Championship! 7. The Video and Animation Club, advised by IHS’ Digital Media Director Austin Alterio and led by students Brian Douglas ‘20 and Lauren Oskam ‘20, worked on and submitted an original video featuring the awesome Mustang spirit of the cheering Immaculate Stable and won the CIAC Battle of the Fans contest. 3. Field Hockey coaches Shannon Horosky and Matthew Ariniello were named Coaches of the Year for Field Hockey by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association. They were chosen for their “accomplishments in the sport and with the IHS program.”

8. Beginning in the 2019-20 season, Immaculate High School will return to an independent ice hockey team with a NEW coach Brian Lugo. 9. Coach Brian Hayes was awarded the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association’s Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year in the State of Connecticut. 10. Boys Cross Country also represented the school extremely well as they too were Class SS State Champions, a first in school history!

ALL AMERICAN ATHLETES

The Lady Mustang foursome of Ailene Doherty ‘21, Molly Coyle ’20, Angela Saidman ‘19 and Taylor Mascetta ‘19 earned All-American status with their championship performance in the championship race at the 2019 New Balance Nationals, held in Greensboro, North Carolina. They placed fourth in the 4x1 mile relay and ran a 20:37.31, which was six seconds off the top spot. Kayla Mingachos ‘19 was selected to the prestigious 2018 Fall High School Girls All-American Team by United Soccer Coaches. Kayla is one of only 58 girls in the country to receive this honor this past season. Kayla was also named an All-New England and All-State First Team player for girls soccer in 2017 and 2018.

Danielle Sekelsky ‘19 earned the honor of Top All-American from the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA), which means she had the highest combined score out of all the nominees. On top of this, Danielle received the Top-Gun tumbler award, a nomination to try out for a staff position in the National Cheerleaders Association in the following year, and was the Pin-It Forward Recipient for her positive attitude.

Immaculate’s 14th Annual Gala Celebrates Springtime in Paris

arents, faculty, staff, supporters and alumni enjoyed a wonderful evening of dining, dancing, live and silent auctions and friendship at our 14th Annual Spring Gala on March 23, 2019 at the Amber Room Colonnade. Guests experienced Springtime in Paris including beautiful decor replete with the Eiffel Tower and fresh flowers,

delicious food and French desserts, fabulous prizes and great music, all which helped set the mood of feeling blessed and resulting in the event raising $138,550. All funds go to programs that benefit Immaculate students. Carl ‘71 and Lauren Bailey received the 2019 Distinguished Service Award and Denis R. Bouffard was honored posthumously

with the 2019 Immaculate High School Lifetime Achievement Award.

fundraiser that benefits the students of Immaculate High School. At the Golf Outing, Scott and Marianne Mitchell ‘81 were honored with the Golden “T” Award for their loyal support of Immaculate and the Annual Golf Outing over the years.

The School Advisory Board represents the institution of the Diocese of Bridgeport and is under the authority of the Office of Education of the Diocese of Bridgeport. The purpose of the School Advisory Board is to provide leadership to foster an environment which provides underlying Catholic values, long term strategic planning and financial stability. Colby feels that Immaculate has helped him prepare for his future by giving him the opportunity “to participate in a variety of school activities to develop beyond the classroom.” Colby ran on the Cross Country team and was also part of both the Indoor and Outdoor Track Programs as well as supporting theater productions here at Immaculate with lighting design and execution. He plans to attend Cornell University on a four year full tuition US Navy ROTC Scholarship and major in Environmental Engineering. mmaculate’s Chapel underwent renovations this past Spring, followed by a dedication ceremony and Mass on Sunday, May 19, and was named in memory of Monsignor John B. Hossan, Immaculate’s founding principal who passed away last year. Monsignor’s deep faith, combined with his dedication to Immaculate’s formative years, make this a perfect way to forever remember him and his legacy. Management – Northwestern University, focusing on strategy, marketing and entrepreneurship. She is also interning at a venture capital firm, focused on one of their portfolio companies. With a schedule like that, it is amazing that Jennifer also finds the time to serve in her community, yet she is involved with an organization called Chicago Run that focuses on getting kids active and involved in running.

MEET OUR CHICAGO ALUMNI! What do NYC, Naples, FL, Boston and Chicago all have in common? Our Mustangs on the Road series of regional stops with our alumni has visited these cities. In April, we headed to the Windy City, where we once again met up with some incredible alumni who are showing the Midwest what it means to be a Mustang! NATASCHA NEPTUNE ‘93

After graduating from Immaculate, Natascha went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and her Masters in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is currently the Senior Mechanical Engineer with Mars Wrigley in Chicago and recently launched a new product for the European market. Natascha has been featured in a recent Women in Engineering article and was interviewed for “Edify Your Sister” social media show for a discussion of Women in STEM. Her ambition and hard work have paid off and she credits Immaculate with helping her develop the discipline and study habits which would enable her to prioritize and juggle college life and school work. “If you are looking for a place to challenge you academically and prepare you for college, then I would encourage anyone to pursue an education at Immaculate. In addition, it is a great place to explore your spiritual self,” Natascha shared. She volunteers at the Local Community Garden in Chicago’s south-side and is a member of the Notre Dame Club of Chicago, serving on the 2019 Notre Dame Club of Chicago Scholarship Committee. She believes that, “Immaculate demonstrated that one should be committed to serving their community, while striving for growth within oneself.” Natascha cherishes the memories of friendship and fun during her years at Immaculate, as well as the opportunity to continue to make new ones with her IHS alumni family. “It was easy to go to the IHS alumni gathering in Chicago to meet new and old faces,” Natascha explained.

Active in advocacy work with the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Katie travels to DC every year to meet with representatives on immigration-related issues. As a partner at her law firm, she is passionate about being able to help some of the most vulnerable people in society. After Immaculate, Katie graduated from Loyola University in Maryland, where she had the opportunity to study for a semester in Spain. Upon graduating, she moved to Chicago to attend Loyola University Chicago School of Law and fell in love with the city! She soon joined the Law Office of Robert D. Ahlgren and Associates, finding a rewarding opportunity to help immigrants and their families. “I got to use my Spanish every day! It was Mrs. Proverb’s Spanish class that instilled in me the love of Spanish,” shared Katie. Katie has stayed in touch with Immaculate because of, “how proud I am of all of the great things the school is doing. I am forever grateful to the faculty and the education they provided me. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without the education I received at Immaculate.” Katie is a volunteer coach with Loyola University Chicago’s moot court program and serves on the law school’s Board of Governors. Katie added, “I have always been involved in pro bono work and believe in giving back to our community, as we are called to be men and women for others. This started at Immaculate and I know that it is something that will always be part of everything I do.”

JENNIFER DAILY ‘10 JONATHAN (JON) PRIEST ‘09

Jon is committed to sustaining the mission of Catholic school education and in his young career has done incredible work in this area. He was recently featured in a Catholic School Matters podcast episode, as well as in an article from Chicago Catholic where he touted the benefits of Illinois’ new tax-credit scholarships. After graduating from Immaculate, Jon attended Boston College and graduated with a BA in International Studies. He then accepted an invitation to join the Loyola University Chicago Opportunities in Catholic Education (LU-Choice) program. There, he lived in community for two years, service taught, and completed a Master of Education in Elementary Education in 2015. After teaching reading, religion and technology in the middle-school grades, Jon has been the Assistant Principal and Director of Marketing for Our Lady of Charity School for the past two years. In this role, he has implemented a one-to-one iPad program, lobbied and assisted parents in applying for tax credit scholarships, and was recently awarded a Heart of Leadership Award from the Archdiocese of Chicago Office of Catholic Schools. Jon shared, “Immaculate prepared me for my future by helping guide my initial discernment into pursuing opportunities to serve in Catholic education, as well as providing me with a phenomenal education that has been a bedrock for my other successes.”

“Immaculate is where I learned that discipline, hard work and determination will set you on the path to success,” remarked Jennifer when asked how Immaculate prepared her for her future. Jennifer was an accomplished student-athlete at IHS, before heading to the University of Notre Dame, where she double-majored in Finance and Economics and, “thoroughly enjoy cheering on the Irish!” After graduation, Jennifer worked at Deloitte in consulting for several years before returning to school and pursuing her MBA from the Kellogg School of

As Jennifer thought about her days at IHS, she recalled teachers who encouraged and challenged her to do her best inside and outside of the classroom. She specifically remembered teachers like Mrs. Arsenault and Mrs. Stockmann who were incredibly supportive of their students, attending sporting events and always willing to share their unbelievable wealth of knowledge. “They are truly passionate about the work that they do and it shows in the way they interact with their students.” She has loved keeping up with all of the great things alumni are doing in their communities via the newsletters and other communications that Immaculate sends to keep alums informed. “IHS has such a great network and Mustang pride goes a long way!”

Buddy Stocks ‘13 (pictured with his mom, Mary) was inducted into Chi Delta Rho, the University of Scranton’s chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the international honor society for counseling.

Phil Kallberg ‘15 graduated magna cum laude from Villanova with a BS in Civil Engineering and minors in Math and Honors. He will be starting a structural engineering job in King of Prussia, PA.

Katie Girardot ’16, a junior theatre management major, was recently featured in the Western Connecticut State University Theatre Arts Student Spotlight, for her role as production stage manager of WCSU’s production of UBU. She also received the Distinguished Achievement in Stage Management at the Region One Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF).

Maeve Reilly ’15, a women’s hockey player at Holy Cross, was selected to play for the 2019 U.S. Women’s National University Team! The 22-player squad competed in March in the Winter World University Games in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

Meg Rudolph ‘15 graduated cum laude from Roanoke College in VA. She earned her BS degree in Biology with a minor in Spanish and will be working towards a Masters of Science in Nursing at Georgetown University in their Clinical Nurse Leader Program.

Isabella Cipollone ‘18 spent a week in rural Panama with UConn students working at a Global Brigades medical clinic. With limited access to healthcare resources, Isabella helped to provide care and education to patients in an effort towards self-sustainability. Isabella shared, “Immaculate High School has encouraged me to give back, through the school’s community of passionate, charitable individuals. I am inspired to pursue a life of service where I can have a positive impact on others.”

Congratulations to Julia Rist ‘16, on winning a prestigious award for Excellence in Journalism at WFUV Radio at Fordham University.

Sean Fahey ‘17 is continuing to improve on his success in the Long Jump and Triple Jump for Mount St. Mary’s University with personal bests this year in the LJ - 22-5.75 and the TJ - 46’6.25.

Joseph Natal ‘17, is a junior Physics major at Cal Berkeley. Joseph worked this summer doing research for van Tilborg at BELLA (Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator) in the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Joseph credits his start in physics with Immaculate’s own Mr. Mertens!

Jimmy Fahey ‘18 was in the starting pitching rotation as a freshman at Trinity College. The team finished 30-9 and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division 3 tournament. This summer he played baseball in Nashua, NH for the Nashua Silver Knights in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League of New England (FCBL).

Dominique Valentine ‘18 had an amazing start to her freshman outdoor track season at Fordham University. At the VCU Rams Invite, Domi placed 5th in individual 400m, 3rd in 4x100m relay and 2nd in the 4x400m relay. She also set the Fordham freshman record in the 400m! 43

Immaculate High School has become a tradition for many of our families. The Class of 2019 has 11 legacy families – students having one or more parents who graduated from Immaculate. We are blessed to continue to have a significant number of legacy students in every class who can relate to the stories and traditions of Immaculate that have been handed down through the years. “There were many blessing growing up in a family of nine but one of the most important and sacrificial gifts my parents gave us seven Bierwirth children was an Immaculate High School education. IHS helped form us all; a Catholic education from experienced teachers in a safe and familylike atmosphere prepared us to enter the world confidently and compassionately. I wanted to honor my parents by sending my three children to IHS as well. Not surprisingly, Ben and I found Immaculate to be everything it has always been. From the dedicated teachers to the spirit filled halls, from Christ’s presence in Campus Ministry and service projects to competitive sports teams, from creative theater to practical learning experiences, IHS has proven to be the right choice for us. Sarah Bohling ‘19 Sarah Bohling, Valedictorian for the Class of 2019, earned Distinguished Honors for four consecutive years and successfully took nine AP courses in her last two years. Additionally, Sarah scored a perfect 800 on the SAT math section and a perfect composite score of 36 on the ACT. She was a member of the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society and the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society. Sarah received numerous awards and honors, including the Isabelle T. Farrington Award, the Campus Ministry Outstanding Participation Award, the President’s Volunteer Service Award, the President’s Education Award, the Harvard Prize Book Award and was World Language Student of the Month. Sarah was an active member of the school’s Campus Ministry, Key Club, She’s the First Chapter and Model UN team, and was a cheerleader. “The support of the Immaculate community has helped me to learn to express myself and continuously strive for greatness. Additionally, the course load constantly challenged me and exposed me to new aspects of learning, inspiring me to always search for knowledge and become a lifelong leader,” said Sarah. “Immaculate has also instilled in me both a strong moral and faith foundation that will stay with me for the rest of my life and is invaluable for college and beyond,” she added. Sarah will major in Biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame as a Stamps Scholar and member of the Glynn Family Honors Society. 49

CLASS OF 2019 COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 2019 We applaud with much pride our Class of 2019, a very accomplished class of 124 students, for their academic recognitions, for being accepted into top colleges and universities and for collectively being awarded over $27 million in scholarships, grants and merit awards. In addition, they collectively contributed 6,050 community service hours during their senior year.
