President’s Message

Opening Doors of Opportunity At the close of every school year, new doors of opportunity open for Immaculate High School students. Today’s enriched holistic educational approach focuses on providing integrated programs that encourage students to be involved and self-directed. Our charism and culture encourage and support every student to discover their God-given talents and to use those talents to their fullest potential. Our philosophy and beliefs in pursuing a Catholic school education for the whole student were affirmed whenever our beloved founding principal, Monsignor Hossan, visited the school and expressed how pleased he was to witness that Immaculate continues to be a place where every

student and family feels at home. We take great pride that our commitment to embrace his vision for every student to be fully engaged in living their faith and becoming responsible, respectful individuals continues today. The college experience begins at Immaculate. This past year, our new career-focused academic program opened doors for students to exceed their own expectations by exploring a wider range of possibilities. Using the course guidelines of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program, the Introduction to Engineering Design class empowered students to integrate math, science and engineering standards while creating hands-on projects using 3D modeling software. In addition, students were able to explore the composition of compounds in our new state-of-the-art chemistry lab and engage in personal finance and health and wellness courses. More diverse, personalized courses including a UCONN Graphic Arts course, international studies and law courses, world languages, world religions, technology certification courses and an internship program are now available to students. Athletics, fine arts and extracurricular activities are primary to extending student experiences. With more than 44 clubs and 18 athletic teams, students are able to foster their leadership skills as well as challenge themselves outside the classroom. This edition of Traditions captures a mere glimpse of the special moments of student accomplishments both inside and outside the classroom. To meet the Strategic Plan goals agreed upon by the valued members of our School Advisory Board, we rely on the support of so many. As a beneficiary of a one-time generous gift granted to the Diocese of Bridgeport Schools, we are able to expand and improve our Distance Learning program, improve our technology infrastructure, provide teachers professional development for academic progress monitoring programs as well as support certification programs in technology and nursing. In a continuing effort to provide a secure, safe and vibrant faith-filled school environment, our front entrance will be further enhanced thanks to additional personalized brick purchases made through our Pave the Way program. The renovation and dedication of our school Chapel is becoming a reality thanks to so many alumni, families and local pastor and parish support. This summer we will update the school’s dining hall, install a patio outside the cafeteria, install new windows on the first floor, update bathrooms and install a new interactive kiosk for visitors, students and parents to learn more about the athletic history of our school. Thank you for supporting us in opening new doors for our students so that their future is filled with opportunities that will advance their moral compass and leadership skills. Because of you, we are a very blessed school community.

Welcome Patrick Higgins, Ed.D Our school year began welcoming our new principal, Dr. Patrick Higgins who completed his undergraduate degree at Western Connecticut State University in History and International Relations as well as his Doctor of Education degree in Instructional Leadership and Educational Psychology. Dr. Higgins’ professional experience began as a social studies instructor at the Ridgefield Alternative High School for four years and then as a social studies teacher at Ridgefield High School for 18 years. In 2011, Dr. Higgins began his administrative career at Joel Barlow High School where he became the Dean of Students and Director of Student Activities followed by a position as a social studies teacher in Darien, Connecticut. In 2015, the opportunity presented itself to become a teaching principal at St. Jude Elementary School in Monroe. Dr. Higgins’ ability to improve student learning, focus on professional development planning, assist with student discipline and model a spiritual leadership that fosters a Christ-centered culture has been evident this past year. We look forward to his continued contributions as our academic leader of Immaculate High School.

School Advisory Board The School Advisory Board represents the institution of the Diocese of Bridgeport and is under the authority of the Office of Education of the Diocese of Bridgeport. The purpose of the School Advisory Board is to provide leadership to foster an environment which provides underlying Catholic values, long term strategic planning and financial stability. The role of the School Advisory Board complements the school’s mission, which is to nurture and foster the spiritual, moral, intellectual, physical and social growth of the student through its religious and academic curriculum and extracurricular programs. Members focus on advising the school administration in the areas of strategic planning, finance, facilities, technology, marketing and development. Remembering Monsignor Hossan 8/21/27 - 5/6/18

M

any of us who have had the privilege and honor to know Reverend Monsignor John B. Hossan, Immaculate’s first Principal, know that he was dedicated to providing families an opportunity to access an exceptional Catholic education. His pragmatic vision, compassion, devotion and ability to partner with local families and parishes to raise the monies necessary to build the school enabled the doors to open on July 1, 1962. Knowing that Catholic identity and family were to be the primary tenets of the school, he commissioned the statue of Mary to be built and grace the front hill of Immaculate. Monsignor Hossan never forgot Immaculate High School. He visited often to celebrate school and alumni Masses in the IHS Chapel. Most memorable was his participation at the school’s fiftieth anniversary events where he witnessed the return of so many alumni who were overjoyed while reminiscing about the wonderful memories and experiences they had as students at Immaculate. They shared their thanks to him for his leadership and guidance. In the fall of 2017, Monsignor joined graduates from the 1960’s, along with current students and administration in the dedication of Immaculate’s new front walkway. He was especially touched by the special inscriptions of pavers reflecting the rich history and mission of the school. Monsignor Hossan’s pinnacle visit was when students, teachers and administration were able to celebrate his 90th birthday with him in the cafeteria last September. “Immaculate High School is grateful for the dedicated leadership of Monsignor Hossan in the early days of our school, as well as for his continued presence and support of our school and mission. His passion and love for the school was always evident,” said Mary Maloney, President of Immaculate High School. “It is with great certainty that Monsignor Hossan will always be remembered for his tremendous leadership, his love for students and his vision to ensure Immaculate High School was family for all those that entered its doors,” she said. Anyone who was graced with Monsignor Hossan’s presence never forgot him. In celebration of his life this past May, many remembered Monsignor as a man “with a dry wit and a twinkle in his eye” and as a “strict disciplinarian with a tremendous amount of empathy and common sense” and, most importantly, as a “good and faithful servant.” Monsignor will always be a cherished member of the Immaculate High School family. Reverend Monsignor John B. Hossan will be sadly missed and forever appreciated. In appreciation of his devotion and dedication to opening the doors to so many at Immaculate High School, the school will be upgrading the Chapel and dedicating it in Monsignor’s honor.

Two Teachers Who Opened Doors for Students:

Kevin Dunleavy and Maureen Arsenault Mr. Dunleavy and Mrs. Arsenault dedicated a combined 79 years of superior teaching at Immaculate; no one can calculate the immeasurable gifts they shared with the entire Immaculate family. Their contributions, loyalty and commitment to Catholic education were a blessed gift to Immaculate students, and they will be missed.

“Thank you for all your dedicated years to IHS. Students who have had the chance to know you are truly blessed. I have many fond memories of you coaching me on the softball team. We all had a lot of laughs while we learned teamwork and taking pride in strong character, not simply winning. You are truly an inspiration as an educator and have inspired me in my work as a school counselor. Your years of service at IHS are phenomenal and show such dedication. Thank you!!! “Even though I only had one class with you (human anatomy), you were by far one of my favorite teachers at Immaculate and one that made a lasting impact on me. You increased my interest in physical therapy and helped me to become the student I am today. It was always a pleasure seeing you at Big Y and it made my work shift just to see you in passing (as well as hear you say “Cerrone!”) and give you a hug. I can’t thank you enough for the positive impact you have had on me and Immaculate will truly miss a passionate and funny teacher and coach. Kevin Dunleavy This year, teacher Kevin Dunleavy retired after 42 years at Immaculate. He began teaching environmental studies, anatomy/physiology and biology at Immaculate in 1976. Dunleavy’s love for science and the environment will forever resonate with his students. “The students here are really good kids -- if you give them a degree of respect, they return it tenfold,” he said. “It has been great teaching here, I have made a lot of life-long relationships and I was fortunate to work along with my former students,” Mr. Dunleavy added. In addition to teaching, Dunleavy coached IHS sports for a total of 50 seasons, including boys’ golf (who were named SWC Champions this year), football, softball and ice hockey. He was inducted into the IHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. Dunleavy also served as Dean of Students for 15 years, Science Department Chair for eight years and advised various clubs. Mr. Dunleavy, a Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, was also a Hall of Fame Board member, chaired the IHS Annual Golf Tournament, was a representative on the IHS Advisory Board of Directors and served as Class Advisor for the Classes of ‘80, ‘03 and ‘07. He created the award-winning curriculum for the IHS Environment Program, a 30-chapter, two-part course of study that tied government and environmental science together. Students learned about the diversity of Candlewood Lake’s ecosystem and the government regulations involved in its health, and were taught to advocate and meet with CT State representatives. He presented this program at an international convention and it won several awards. Mr. Dunleavy became a delegate to the Candlewood Lake Authority and developed a collaborative relationship with Western Connecticut State University’s Science/Biology Department that benefits Immaculate students to this day. He also developed the Project Clear curriculum in conjunction with the Candlewood Lake Authority that is taught in several local schools. From his days as an elementary Catholic school student, Mr. Dunleavy always knew he wanted to teach science in a Catholic high school. “I knew that I could be a good teacher, and I believe that there will always be a need for people who understand environmental science, biology and anatomy, and it starts in high school,” he said. He also credits former Immaculate teacher and principal Robert Gerwien for his desire to excel as a teacher: “Bob Gerwien had the greatest impact on me -- he was an incredible leader and a fantastic man who taught me a lot,” he said.

Kevin Dunleavy will not stop learning or teaching when he retires. He will continue his work on developing environmental education programs, will join his wife Meg in opening a gift shop in Cape Cod and, of course, will play many rounds of golf. 9

“Find your passion and work towards it because you can’t be doing something you don’t like every day. Your passion will come through when dealing with people every day.”

Maureen Arsenault Maureen (Brew) Arsenault ‘69 returned to the halls of Immaculate in 1981 and taught for 37 years before deciding to retire this year. “The impact of this school makes people want to come back; students feel connected and are drawn back to teach, coach and more. And, there is a large number of alumni that now send their children 10

here,” Arsenault said. “My algebra teacher, Robert Gerwien, was the principal who hired me. The positive experiences I had as a student were the big draws for me to return here to teach,” she said. Arsenault noted that while a lot has changed since she was a student, most notably that the religious were 97% of teachers during her day, she still finds Immaculate High School as supportive of students as it was back then. “Everyone who works here does so to support the students, whether it be teachers, coaches or administrators,” she said. “Everyone is here for the passion of teaching and for concern for the kids,” Mrs. Arsenault added. She noted that the success of Immaculate is in part that it is small enough

that teachers can get to know almost every student and can notice and take care of their individual needs. Mrs. Arsenault also contends that another gift is the ability of the Immaculate family to come together in times of crisis and take care of each other. “I believe that the compassion factor - the concern shown for others - is the backbone of this school,” she noted. An English/American Literature teacher, Arsenault taught students how to appreciate classic works of literature that incited discussions on secular educational points of view while learning Christian values through short stories, novels and non-fiction writings. She particularly enjoys witnessing students grow in their

knowledge and how they use that knowledge after graduation. Arsenault enjoyed connecting with her students by attending events and showing support while they played sports and performed in plays and concerts.

“I just want to thank you for being an incredible source of support and inspiration throughout my four years at Immaculate. You were such an incredible role model who shared of yourself not only through excellent teaching but also by instilling confidence and giving tough love to your students. I will remember my years in your classes fondly for so many reasons. Thank you for pushing me to be a better student and a better person. You were a blessing to have as a teacher. “ - Alexandra Bradley ‘07

Arsenault chaired the English Department for 15 years and the Fine Arts Department for two years. She served as the Class of 1988 Advisor, a representative on the school’s first Advisory Board, and as the faculty leader of the Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) program. Arsenault was inducted into the IHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016. Her photography skills, some examples of which hang in the Learning Commons, gave Immaculate a breath-taking historical collection of sporting events, theatre productions, special events, nature and more. When leaving the school for the last time, Maureen Arsenault shared a final bit of advice for students: “Find your passion and work towards it because you can’t be doing something you don’t like every day. Your passion will come through when dealing with people every day.”

“Thank you so much for everything you have done for Immaculate over the past 37 years! I wanted to let you know how much of a difference you’ve made on my academic career. You were always more than willing to read my papers in study hall, providing me with much needed feedback on how I could improve upon my writing skills. I took all of those lessons learned and applied them throughout my college career, and I must say, I still use them daily at work as well. I have you to thank for that! I hope to see you again soon at an Immaculate sporting event! “ - Rob Cuccia ‘13

Innovation and Commitment: STEAM Program

O ffering students the opportunity to open doors to future careers is the premise of our

innovative Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) initiative. Our recently renovated physics and chemistry labs are state-of-the art facilities, providing new ways for students to explore and create new solutions using their math, science and technology skills. The newly introduced Project Lead the Way (PLTW) engineering classes as well as graphics courses, one of which is a UCONN course, allows students to test and create their conceptual engineered product designs using a donated commercial Stratasys 3D printer. This year Immaculate launched its online Distance Learning (DL) Algebra I Honors program. Grade 7 and 8 students enrolled in our diocesan schools take the class online at their school. Students who complete the two-semester course requirements receive an official transcript for one high school credit. The Graphic Arts program now includes a business marketing component where students create promotional materials for local organizations. The Foundations in Education Innovation Grants Program recognized the innovative ideas of both the Graphic Arts and Distance Learning Program and awarded $6500 to purchase a Carvey production instrument to create three-dimensional work as well as provide additional technology and professional development to support the Distance Learning Program. The Introduction to Engineering Design course encourages students to apply math, science and engineering standards to hands-on projects including working both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software and an engineering notebook to document their work. Next year Immaculate will offer an additional class, Principles of Engineering, for students to explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials and automation that will align with student interest in Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering and Architecture and Environmental Sustainability. Our school’s infrastructure has progressed to accommodate the transition of 1:1 iPads to laptops. To further support students who excel in the STEAM program, a Technology Club and an Animation Club are now offered along with a Math Honor Society and Science Honor Society. Thanks to Aidan Kuroski ‘12, Physics Teacher, Tom Mertens, and a generous $1,000 grant from BFGoodrich, Immaculate was able to purchase a weather station and has become an official reporting station for NOAA.gov.

Connor McNerney ‘18 was named Immaculate High School’s Student of the Year for the 2017-18 school year. Connor earned this honor for consistently demonstrating school spirit and dedication to IHS, strength of character and faith in action through kindness to others, and a passion for learning and going beyond what is expected, including encouraging others to do their best.

Katy Cassetta ‘18, Angela Saidman ‘19, Camille Vail ‘20 and Nancy Yang ‘19 each had their mini-sagas printed in “Spine-Chillers - Tales from Connecticut.” Their four short stories were chosen out of 4,500 entries. The IHS CyberPatriots team John Palladino ‘18, Kevin McCoy ‘18, Ryan Henn ‘19, Jack Brooks ‘18, Dan Wroblewski ‘19, Colby Bellone ‘19 and William Wang ‘19 placed first in The Connecticut Regional National Youth Cyber Defense Competition sponsored by the national Cyber Education Program. This is the third year in a row that the team won the State competition.

Ian FItzgerald ’20 placed fifth in the CT 2018 US Geography Olympiad national qualifying exam, and competed in the 2018 International Geography Championships.

John Palladino ‘18 was named a Semifinalist in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Competition. He was one of only 220 Connecticut students to have an eligibility score for the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards. Seniors Marina Kolitsas ‘18, Kevin McCoy ‘18 and Nicole Palmieri ‘18 were named Commended Students in the same competition.

Elias Haddad ‘21 placed first in the alternative/renewable energy--high school category and received a finalist medallion in the Future Sustainability Awards at the Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair. He was also granted an MIT Club of Hartford $100 award for Excellence in Science/ Technology for energy related research--high school. 13

Theatre Awards

The Fall Drama Twelfth Night and the Spring Musical Grease were nominated for a total of 15 Halo Awards and four Stephen Sondheim Awards. Nicole Kolitsas ‘21 won the Halo award for Best Featured Actress in a Classical Play for her role as Feste in Immaculate’s own version of Twelfth Night.

Jillian Fredette ‘18 won, for the second year in a row, the Dance Molinari Scholarship for her role as Cha-Cha in Grease.

Inspiring Creativity and Talent: Matt Farina Fine Arts Department has many talented teachers and supporters; one of them is Matthew T heFarina, director and choreographer of the Immaculate High School spring musicals. His

commitment to the spring musicals during the last decade not only brought glory to Immaculate, it helped more experienced students develop their talents while providing a friendly, encouraging venue for students who never acted, sang or danced.

Farina has choreographed seven musicals at Immaculate including In the Heights, Miss Saigon and Oklahoma! Due in large part to his vision and talents, this year’s production of Grease was nominated for 12 prestigious Halo awards, including Best Classical Musical and Best Dancing, and four Stephen Sondheim Awards including Best Choreography, Best Direction and Best Musical. The 2017 production of Fiddler on the Roof won Halo awards for Best Classical Musical, Best Dancing and Best Performance by a Lead Actor. The Halo awards are presented by Seven Angels Theatre and are the most prestigious high school theater awards event in Connecticut. There are no words to describe the excitement that occurs among actors, musicians and stage crew when Farina puts his creative vision into action. This year’s production of Grease was no exception. In collaboration with Producer Kathleen Czel, IHS alumna and English teacher, Farina organized over 70 students with varied interests, activities and talents to come together to share the iconic story about teen friendships, romance and adventures through powerful dance routines, staging and acting. In addition to the musicals, this Redding Teacher of the Year and elementary school Gifted and Talented instructor wrote and produced an immersive theater production A Tale of Woe: The Story of Juliet and Romeo, which was performed by students throughout the halls and classrooms of Immaculate exclusively through dance and movement.

and evokes pride, boosts morale, and it brings out the best in student-athletes. Great coaches are pivotal to successful teams. Immaculate is fortunate to have many coaches that fit that purpose; one standout coach is Nelson Mingachos ‘89. This year Coach Mingachos led the girls soccer team to a SWC Championship and boys basketball to the CIAC Division II State Championship and was named SWC Coach of the Year for girls soccer. These were not his and the teams’ first major achievements -- in total he has coached IHS girls soccer teams to four SWC Championships and ten CIAC State Championships, with an overall record to date of 203-52-36, and IHS boys basketball to three CIAC State Championships and an SWC Championship since he began head coaching the teams in 2003.

Coach Mingachos has received many honors as a result of his coaching, including being named SWC Coach of the Year six times, as well as Coach of the Year by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association, the Connecticut Girls Soccer Association, the NCSAA, the CT Sports Writer Alliance and the Danbury News Times Coach of the Year (four times). He was inducted into the Immaculate Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. His most special connection to Immaculate is that he is a 1989 graduate and his family is truly an Immaculate family. His daughter Sophia ‘20 and niece Kayla ‘19 are currently Mustangs, and his daughter Isabella ‘16 and nephew Ryan ‘16 are proud IHS alumni. As an Immaculate student-athlete, Coach Mingachos played football and basketball. “I love giving back to a school that did so much

for me,” said Coach Mingachos, who often tells people that he “bleeds Mustang Blue.” He coached alongside Bob Nelson and Bob Plumb before becoming head coach himself. “Immaculate has it all - a family-feeling, religion and support from administration and parents -- that’s what makes it great to coach here, they believe in what I am doing,” he said, adding, “Watching and helping the studentathletes grow, develop and succeed over their four years here is wonderful too.” Coach also credits his assistant coaches with everyone’s success. He has one important piece of advice for all student-athletes who wish to play on in college: “Make sure that you represent yourself, your last name and the school well whenever you are on the field or court.” In other words, play well, be fair and show good sportsmanship so more doors can open for you.

Coach Dunleavy added a fitting exclamation point at the end of his Immaculate career when he led the Mustangs to the South-West Conference boys golf title. The team of Liam Deakin ‘18, Jack Woods ‘19, Ryan Fanella ‘19, Joe Robinson ’20, Dan LeBlanc ‘21, Nick Iannetta ’21 and Matt Schlichtig ‘21 won the SWC Championship, the Mustangs’ first conference golf crown since they won the Western Connecticut Conference title in 1988. Woods (78), LeBlanc (81), Robinson (84), Deakin (88) and Fanella (94) combined to shoot a 331 at Ridgewood Country Club in Danbury and edge reigning champ Masuk by seven strokes. With the SWC trophy firmly in hand, the Mustangs went on to place second in the Division IV state championships at Timberlin Golf Course in Kensington. For the second straight year, Immaculate finished second to Portland, this time by only five strokes.

Julia Font ‘18 was named an All-State Cheerleader, Division S, and received All-State Academic Honors - Cheerleading from the Connecticut High School Coaches Association -- this makes Julia the first All-State Cheerleader in Immaculate’s history. The IHS Cross Country teams had outstanding outings at the CIAC State Championship Meet on October 28, where the lady Mustangs won the girls Class S Championship for their fifth title in six years and the boys placed second in the Class SS standings for their highest finish ever. Junior Angela Saidman won the girls Class S race (19:41) with Taylor Mascetta ‘19 placing second (20:21). Christina Carboni ‘19 finished ninth (21:40), Natalie Dudas ‘19 12th (21:56), Katherine Cassetta ‘18 19th (22:15), Brigid Gage ‘20 26th (22:59) and Maura Murphy ‘19 placed 35th (23:51). On the boys’ side, Connor McNerney ‘18 led the Mustangs placing 8th overall, with Patrick Cropsey ‘18 placing 13th (17:33), William Gasparrini ‘18 20th (18:03), Sean Connolly ‘18 31st (18:34), Ryan McNerney ‘20 32nd (18:35), James Sullivan ‘20 33rd (18:36) and Matthew Villanueva ‘18 finishing 39th (18:47). All seven members of the boys team placed in the top 40 of the 173 runners competing in the race. Additionally, at the CIAC State Open on November 3, junior Angela Saidman ‘19 placed fifth (19.31) and went on to the New England High School Cross Country Championship in Belfast, Maine on November 11, where she placed 21st out of 254 runners (18:43) and earned All-New England Honors for the second year in the row.

At its annual Breakfast of Champions on May 23, the Diocese of Bridgeport honored a select group of Catholic school students, including IHS seniors Catherine “Katy” Cassetta ‘18, Jack Guiry ‘18, Isaiah “Jake” Payton ‘18 and Ronan Doherty ‘18. Jack received the St. Thomas Aquinas Award, which is awarded to students in their last year of elementary or high school who have demonstrated academic accomplishment. Katy, Ronan and Jake received the St. Sebastian Award for high school seniors who have not only academic distinction but have been captain of an athletic team that won at the State level during this academic year. Paul Carlsen ‘18 was the recipient of a WHITIE BENSEN SPORTSMANSHIP SCHOLARSHIP for Hockey. Both Paul’s hockey and lacrosse coaches describe Paul as an outstanding teammate who always displays integrity and honesty both on and off the field.

Field Hockey Makes History C oaches Shannon Horosky and Matt Ariniello

took the IHS Field Hockey helm in 2009 with a philosophy centered on helping players grow into strong, confident young women. Together, they earned their 100th win in the 2017 season and went on to win the program’s first SWC championship against 14-time league champions and #1 seed Pomperaug. At the start of each season, Shannon and Matt encourage the team to make faith, family, education and field hockey their priorities. Their focus has been on building the character of their players by emphasizing teamwork, dedication, hard work and honesty. Each year, the IHS Field Hockey team participates in service events to give back to the community, along with hosting a game each fall to honor a very special former player, Kerri Holbrook ‘10, who lost her life to cancer. All proceeds from the game benefit the Kerri Holbrook Foundation.

We have heard from players both past and present who share that IHS Field Hockey was the tightest knit team, allowing for friendships and memories which they will cherish forever.” Of course, the team’s efforts to give back to the community and accomplishments on the field have made their coaches and everyone in the IHS family proud!

The team’s accomplishments on the field, as indicated by the program’s success since 2009, including a 112-33-14 record and having qualified for both the SWC and CIAC tournament, shows that Shannon and Matt’s coaching philosophy has worked. They were both named CIAC Coaches of the Year in 2012 and 2015 and have coached 18 of their student-athletes to the CIAC All-State Team. In addition, the team captured two Patriot Division titles in 2015 and 2017, as well as reaching the CIAC state semi-finals in 2012, 2015 and 2017. In 2015, Matt was named Chairman of the All American Committee for New England. When asked what they are most proud of the coaching duo shared, “The camaraderie that has been a constant thread through all of our seasons

• The She’s the First Chapter hosted their 3rd Annual 5K Walk/Run in memory of Rebecca Draper Townsend ‘15, raising over $5,000 to provide scholarships to girls in low-income developing countries to help transform their lives through education. • Forty students and seven chaperones left for Washington, DC to march in the 45th Annual March for Life on January 19. • Connor McNerney ‘18 was named Student of the Year by the Danbury Exchange Club for excellence in academics, leadership and school/ community service. • The boys and girls track team ran a special marathon on December 14 to honor the 26 children and staff who lost their lives five years ago at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The student-athletes started with a prayer circle, then ran a total of 26 miles, one mile for each person lost, on the IHS track holding signs with the names of each person.

NHS Hurricane Relief Key Club Cereal Drive

• IHS students did an outstanding job selling Christmas trees this year at Stew Leonard’s and raised $2,550 for Immaculate. • National Honor Society raised $2,500 in support of hurricane relief for Saint John Paul II school in Houston, Texas and $2,055 for children fighting cancer. • The cheerleaders, boys and girls basketball team raised $2,018 for Ann’s Place in Danbury. This donation will help 20 Ann’s Place clients for one month.

• IHS Key Club collected nearly 1,000 boxes of cereal for the Dorothy Day Hospitality House in Danbury and over 700 books for the United Way’s reading program. • More than 80 IHS students raked leaves for those in need of help at the annual Rake “N Bake in Brookfield. • Kendra Dascano ‘18 was chosen to receive one of the first ever Emerging Hero Awards from the United Way of Western Connecticut for demonstrating strong leadership in volunteerism and community service.

Instilling Faith in our Students: Gina Donnarummo Donnarummo, who began teaching G ina religion at Immaculate in 2015 after serving as Director of Adult Formation for the Diocese of Bridgeport, believes the role of the Religion Department is to “instill the Catholic Christian faith in our students.”

“As a religion teacher, I collaborate with teachers, administration and Deacon Jeff Font so that we can be authentic Christian witnesses for our Catholic identity in order to teach and inspire our students,” said Miss Donnarummo. “I not only want teachers to embrace and encourage the Catholic faith everyday and in every aspect of educating our students, but also be a community in union with our students and Christ and share in student struggles and joys,”

Miss Donnarummo said. To help connect with and teach her students, Miss Donnarummo uses games, YouTube videos, live performances and pilgrimages to teach about the saints and apostles, the early Church, vocations, the sacraments, morality and Catholic social teachings. This year she also invited clergy and religious to come speak to students and had “St. Paul” visit them, encouraged students to write a letter to Pope Francis (and they received a reply!), emphasized helping those who need support by making sandwiches for the homeless and travelled with students for the March for Life. Miss Donnarummo also took students to two faithbuilding retreats and on pilgrimages to the Regina Laudis Abbey in Bethlehem, CT and the National Shrine of the North American Martyrs and Saint

Kateri Tekakwitha Shrine in Auriesville, NY. Miss Donnarummo wants her students to have a relationship with God and Jesus. “If my students leave my class knowing that God loves them and that they can have a personal relationship with Christ, I have succeeded,” she said.

Second Annual Scholarship Breakfast at the Amber Room Colonnade, with over 175 attendees helping us to raise $13,500 for our Adopt-a-Mustang Fund. The Adopt-aMustang Fund provides scholarships for students who need assistance to meet their tuition obligations due to a hardship. Currently Immaculate provides financial assistance to more than 52 percent of our students. Special thanks to Keynote Speaker Joseph T. Draper ‘82, as well as Jack Bouffard ‘93 and Megan McDermott ‘13 for sharing with the attendees the positive difference that IHS made in their lives and the importance of a Catholic education. 1991-2010), David Bonilla ‘00 (Cross Country, Basketball & Baseball), Nikki (Weiss) Conte ‘07 (Soccer & Basketball), Chris Haddad ‘00 (Basketball & Baseball) and the 1986 State & WCC Championship Ice Hockey Team into its Athletic Hall of Fame on May 4. Congratulations to all!

The ceremony also featured a special presentation of Immaculate’s first 1,000 point basketball, which was presented to the school by recipient Paul Hiro ‘68. Immaculate High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame was founded in 1989 and now has 86 members and three teams. IHS is excited to announce a new state-of-theart 70” touchscreen that will be displayed in our

front lobby at the start of the school year, featuring information about our Athletic Hall of Fame inductees and championship teams. Immaculate extends a special thank you to all the volunteers and sponsors who made the Hall of Fame event and touchscreen possible. Hall of Fame nominations will open again in early 2019. Alumni Spotlight

Marc Ennis ‘93 Marc Ennis ’93 was awarded the 2017 Annual Chairman’s Award from American Airlines. Only 100 out of over 120,000 American Airlines employees worldwide receive the award each year. It is the highest honor that American Airlines bestows upon its team members for going above and beyond and making a positive impact. He was recognized for his ongoing involvement with

pilot recruitment and hiring, new pilot mentoring and the Chicago Air & Water Show. While Marc has had much professional success, he has never forgotten his alma mater! At IHS, Marc was involved with S.A.D.D., Yearbook Committee (co-editor his senior year), and played tennis. He graduated with Distinguished Honors and was a member of the National Honor Society. He shared, “Every member of the faculty was devoted to my success. Influential educators like Mr. David Couch and Mr. Denis Bouffard made a lasting impression on me.” After Immaculate, Marc graduated from Parks College of Saint Louis University in 1997 with a B.S. in Aviation Science/Professional Pilot. His first job in aviation was as a Flight Instructor. He went on to fly cancelled checks and bank notes for a small cargo company. From there, he flew for a United Express commuter airline, and then was hired at American Airlines in 1999. He is currently a Boeing 737 Captain based at Chicago O’Hare. Marc has flown the Boeing 727, McDonnell Douglas MD-80, Boeing 737, and Boeing 787 for American over the last 19 years. Marc shared, “If any Mustangs are ever on board one of my flights please stop by the flight deck after the flight to say hello!” Marc is from Newtown, CT, but currently lives with his wife, Katie, in Geneva, IL, a western suburb of Chicago. He is on the road 15-17 days a month. He volunteers for various programs at his local parish and food bank and is very active in his Union’s new pilot mentoring program. But, thanks to technology, helping IHS over the years has been possible despite his busy travel schedule.

Marc has connected via text, email, teleconference, Facebook, etc. to help plan his 20th and 25th class reunions, volunteer in the Alumni Association as a ‘93 Class Rep, and co-chair Immaculate’s huge 50th Anniversary Weekend Celebration – all from the comforts of his home in Chicago or from a hotel room! Sometimes literally thousands of miles from IHS, but still making a valuable contribution. “I encourage everyone to support the school’s activities, fundraisers, and scholarships. Most importantly, stay connected. Even if you are no longer local, I am proof that location doesn’t matter. It’s about honoring Mustangs who have come before us and leaving it better for the next generation,” said Marc. “IHS prepared me for college and my career, as well as, morally and spiritually for life. It helped me grow in my Catholic faith and taught me the importance of serving others. I’m a better person and closer to God because of it,” said Marc. “I wouldn’t be the person that I am today if it wasn’t for my foundational IHS education and experience. IHS inspired faith, leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and excellence in me. For that, I am forever grateful.” And, we are grateful for true-blue alumni like Marc who make a difference for Immaculate High School!

Dr. Mark Sanna ’79 was named Membership Chairman for the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (F4CP.org). The Foundation’s mission is to create public awareness of chiropractic as a drug-free alternative for pain relief.

Alexandra Lukianoff ’91, MD started a new position as Medical Director at St. Francis/Mt. Sinai Center for Advanced Wound Healing.

John Barata ’96 was recently named one of the Top 50 most influential people in New England soccer by the New England Soccer Journal.

Meagan (Cann) Neville ‘03 received the Top 40 under 40 recognition among business entrepreneurs in Fairfield County, CT. She is the Founder/Creative Director at Workspace Collective in Danbury.

Javier Soegaard ’06 started a new position in Operations and Logistics at Citizens Resources LLC in Boston. He married Lisa on July 29, 2017 at Saint Brigid of Kildare Church in South Boston, MA in the great company of many IHS alums!

Cara Capilli ’14 will teach second grade at Saint Mary School in Ridgefield this fall. Cara recently graduated from Catholic University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education.

Michael Hudak ’14 graduated in May with a double major in Communications and Sports Management from Florida State University and will begin working with WCTV (a CBS affiliate) in Tallahassee as a Weekend Sports Anchor and Reporter.

Sara Rizzo ’14 was among 15 members of The University of Scranton’s class of 2018 who graduated from its Business Leadership Honors Program and Special Jesuit Liberal Arts Honors Program. She graduated magna cum laude, majoring in accounting and philosophy and will be returning to Scranton in the fall to work as a GTA in the Kania School of Management while getting her MBA. This summer she is working as an Advisory Intern at PWC in New York City.

Katie McAdams ’17 started a new job as a Resource Teacher at The Goddard School in Wilton, CT and is the new studio intern at Ben’s Bells in Bethel, CT. Katie studies Corporate Communication at Belmont University in Nashville.

Minister, Rev. Thomas Halkovic, CSC, 73, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 9, 2017. Father Tom worked at Immaculate as a Guidance Counselor from 1978 to 1982 and as the Director of Guidance from 1982 to 1989. Jim Coffey ’83 shared, “Fr. Tom Halkovic was our friend, high school guidance counselor, teacher and one of the most compassionate priests my classmates and I have known.” Father Tom came back to IHS recently for the 50th Anniversary celebration and will always be remembered for his dedication to the students he served. Countless alumni were saddened to hear the news of his passing and will long remember him fondly. Students, faculty and staff offered our Mass for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8 for the intention of Father Tom.
