IHS faculty members don’t simply teach what they know, they shape what is known, and they inspire and empower their students to do the same.

Sean McCoy ’16, was selected as one of the top 30 high school juniors in CT and received the prestigious Governor’s Scholars Award. Drew Valentine ’15, was recognized by the State of Connecticut African-American Affairs Commissions as The Youth of the Year.

Empowerment Being an Immaculate High School student means being empowered to be the best you can be. Belonging, sharing and having high expectations of personal performance is encouraged. Immaculate Girls Soccer team won their first Class L State Championship. Paige Davis ’15 scored both goals and was awarded All-American for girls soccer. The English Department promotes engagement of the individual through group inquiry and personal analysis, while fostering an appreciation for creative expression of one’s ideas through reading, writing and oratorical activities. Using an inquiry-based approach, students are encouraged to examine and analyze the work of authors, debating context, meaning, and style. Effective public speaking skills, rhetoric, and dramatic conventions are demonstrated in class presentations and theatrical productions.
The Visual and Performing Arts are essential to obtaining a fullycomprehensive education as they encourage reflecting on cultural heritages and perception of self.
While seeking new ways to solve problems, teachers provide the opportunity for students to identify processes through experiences including flipped classroom and inquiry-based learning strategies.
Immaculate’s students are encouraged to showcase their creative talents through various school, local, and state productions. Student poets, authors, and thespians have been honored annually for their contributions to diverse creative competitions.
Immaculate students are recognized for their musical and artistic talents through the Tri-M Music Honor Society, the CT Student Film Festival, HALO awards and more. This year, Jonathan Wild received a CT Student Film Festival award for his animated short film, On the Permafrost. The HALO Award was presented to winners Isabelle Camillo ‘16, for Best Original Program Cover Design/Artwork and Giovanni Fardella ‘16, for Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in the school play, The Tempest.
Students are challenged to work together to solve problems using traditional methods coupled with innovative significance. Math is less about memorizing and more about understanding and applying equations, formulas and patterns. The Math team continue to expand it’s competitive reach with students winning local and national recognition. Students in the Probability and Statistics class apply their classroom teaching to real world problem solving. They have been involved in school improvement projects such as the the Learning Commons transformation and the improvements to Dining Services. 11

High school students face many personal and academic challenges. Our physical education program is designed to promote acquiring lifetime skills through fitness, sport, knowledge and attitudes that contribute to a student’s optimal well-being.
What does it mean to be a student in our Catholic school? It means synthesizing authentic humanity with faith. As a result, the richness of our religion program transcends to all subject areas. Students not only learn about the history and beliefs of our Catholic faith, but are asked how their faith, whether Catholic, Christian or other, is their moral compass in life.
Sports medicine students learned the essential principles of sports injuries and medical emergencies. Our new Biomedical Science program engages students in humanitarian inquiry and awareness of forensics, entomology, DNA identification, scientific analysis and transferring of viruses throughout the world. Students have made their gained knowledge relevant volunteering at Danbury Hospital and other health agencies.
Class activities such as the Personal and Lifetime Fitness Challenge students to stretch beyond their comfort level and physical acuity through the use of motivational instruction. Ultimately, students develop a sense of achievement and an understanding of self-motivation, teamwork, sportsmanship and personal accomplishment. These skills provide them with a baseline of lifetime fitness.
Connection to faith is important to assisting our students in who they become in life. Integrating faith development, prayer life, retreats, social teachings, and community service provides students with time to reflect, to become more knowledgeable about serving others and to be a witness to Christ. This year, 91 students received the Presidential Voluntary Service Award (PVSA) for completing more than 100 community service hours.

Culminating the year’s activities, the Physics class students were seen utilizing what they’d learned by analyzing the variables associated with dropping water balloons outside a window, with the purpose of hitting a specific target, their instructor seated in a chair.

What do we learn from our past? Statesman, Winston Churchill acclaimed that ‘those who fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it.�
Technology is shaping the world in which we now live. In order to best prepare students for the ever-increasing need to be knowledgeable in current technology programming and applications, the programs offered include understanding the moral and ethical responsibilities associated with the use of technology.
As globalization, mobility and communication increases, learning a world language becomes more critical. Our program allows students the ability to step inside the mind and context of another culture with the intent to provide them with intercultural understandings.
Our social studies program focuses on human relationships, materialisms, cultures, justice, interfaith studies, economy and the impact leaders of the world have had on social freedoms. Students analyze current world events with the purpose of understanding how current decisionmaking and other trends will impact their future. Students applied this knowledge of history and law in outside venues by competing in the statewide History Quiz Bowl team and the Regional Mock Trial competition.
Students are engaged in learning business management and best business practices through an introduction to current accounting software. Our Computer Programming courses have grown to include multiple years of programming. As an extension of the technology program, a new extra-curricular program, the Cyber Patriots, was introduced this year to promote further understanding of the importance of digital citizenship.
The Spanish, French, Latin and Chinese instructors enable students to not only communicate through oral and written exercises, they extend their own heritage, experiences and historical knowledge of their native countries. Interesting activities include cuisine, researching the economies of countries who speak the language being taught, group presentation on promoting world peace, comparative readings on current foreign affairs, religions and international perspectives. 13

The high school experience at Immaculate provides students with the opportunity to engage in a challenging academic environment while participating in athletics, fine arts, leadership and spirituality. Immaculate students are active and discover themselves through involvement in multiple activities. This sets us apart from other schools. Students hone their talents and interests while, at the same time, are highly successful inside and outside the classroom. 14

Good news, there is many ways to make an Immaculate High School education affordable. IHS offers academic and need-based scholarships and financial aid.
Each year, the Admissions Office recruits a highly competitive group of domestic and international students to enter the 125 – 130 spots available in our freshman class. In addition, Immaculate High School seeks transfer students to enter grades 10 and 11.

Athletics lay the foundation for the development of student athletes into respectful and responsible adults. Our coaches work collaboratively with our teaching staff to ensure the success of our student athletes both in the classroom and on the field. 75% of student athletes are on the honor roll. In the end, it comes down to the dedication of the student to meet all of his or her responsibilities, and overwhelmingly, they do.
Eighty-three percent of our students play at least one sport, while 40% play two or more sports! Many of these students are involved in one or more other school activities as well. This commitment to the life of the school community, and the environment that enables it to flourish, is a hallmark of the Immaculate experience.
Athletes learn through time that their performance on the field can result in success as well as failure. Our successes this year are notable: Fifteen of our programs qualified for both the South West Conference playoffs and the State Tournament. Girls Soccer won the first Class L State Championship in school history in a team sport. The first year of ATI United football was a success, finishing 8-3. The Girls Basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Class S State tournament for the first time since 1992, while Girls Softball qualified for the State Tournament for the first time in 21 years. Girls Volleyball and Girls Swimming competed in their inaugural Varsity seasons, with Girls swimming placing in the top ten in both the SWC and Class M State Championships.

Mary Raymond Fine Arts Dept. Chair Immaculate High School has a vibrant Fine Arts program. Nearly all IHS students are involved with art, band, chorus drama, guitar ensemble, musical theater or sound design. The new sound recording studio is available for students to practice and record original work as well as work of famous artists. The Fine Arts Program’s emphasis is to challenge each student to develop their means of self-expression to their personal best. Fine Arts is the art of finding yourself! 18

Sacramental activities begin with a focus on the Eucharist, which Saint John Paul II said was the way to draw youth to the Church. Adoration and Mass are available daily. Additional activities include special holiday and holy day school-wide Masses, a prayer service for 12/14, class retreats, a Lenten penance service and opportunities for confession, plus teaching Masses for the religion classes where topics this year have included sacred traditions, the history and theological basis of Lent, and the rosary.

I Am Home Immaculate High School Campus Map Immaculate High School incorporates many extraordinary facilities that are home for our students, faculty, staff and all visitors. Our vision to provide a secure, state-of-the-art campus for our students is a primary mission goal. A Facilities Capital Plan has been established and, thanks to your support, implementation has begun! During the summer of 2015, we will be improving the entrance of our school building as well as transforming current business office space into a new 21st Century classroom and re-designing our administrative office and lobby space. Thank you very much for making our 2015 Spring Gala a huge success. In addition to enjoying food, drink and dancing, together we raised $87,000 with an additional $53,500 for the Immaculate Fund for a total of $140,500!

T
he Deakin family embodies the saying, “Once a Mustang…Always a Mustang!” Mike Deakin ’81 marveled, “A Deakin attended Immaculate High School for all but one or two years from about 1975 to 1994, and now my nephews attend IHS and my sister, Bridget, teaches there. It’s hard to believe that a Deakin has been a part of over half of the school’s history! We’re proud of that, and so happy to be a part of IHS’s continued success.” When asked why she decided to send her seven children (pictured with her from L-R: Tim Deakin ‘77, Brendan Deakin ‘86, Bridget Deakin Henry ‘92, Mary Deakin Johnson ‘80, Sean Deakin ‘87, Moira Deakin Finney ‘93, Mary Deakin Fredlund, Michael Deakin ‘81) to Immaculate High School, Mary Deakin Fredlund said, “I chose to send my children to Immaculate High School because I have long valued a Catholic education. In countless large and small ways, the hallways, classrooms and fields of Immaculate became a home away from home for all of my children. It was a blessing to know that my children were safe and cared for, as they were continuously surrounded by teachers, staff and coaches that truly became a part of our extended family. I am grateful for the education my children received at Immaculate High School and will always treasure the Immaculate years.” This past winter, you could find Mary sitting in the IHS bleachers, cheering on two of her grandchildren, Jack and Liam, as they played on the freshman basketball team.

When asked about his experience at Immaculate, Sean ’87, shared, “Immaculate prepared me for the future by teaching me about faith and community. My lifelong friends and mentors have come from IHS. I know that my son, John ‘18, and my daughter Finan ‘19 will learn so much at Immaculate and will continue to grow in their faith.” Sean has generously supported many events at Immaculate, including our upcoming 50th Anniversary Weekend in October. “The Brendan ’86, Liam’s father, recently joined the IHS 50th Anniversary will be a great time for past Alumni Association as Vice President. As for Liam’s and future graduates! Everyone will have the freshman year, Brendan commented that, “Liam’s opportunity to see how IHS as grown over the experience at IHS has exceeded both his own years.” and his parents’ expectations. Bridget (Deakin) Henry ‘92 was inducted into the IHS Hall of Fame in 2010 for her outstanding accomplishments in basketball and softball. She has returned to Immaculate as a faculty member in the science department. Her dedication to her students and love of Immaculate is evident in everything she does. “My years at Immaculate have always held a special place in my heart. I have always considered Immaculate High School part of my extended family as I was supported, encouraged, challenged and loved there in countless and immeasurable ways. If I can give back to one student, even an ounce of what I received at Immaculate High School, then I have begun to repay a debt for which I am infinitely grateful.”

Moira (Deakin) Finney ’93 will join her sister Bridget and a long list of outstanding Mustang athletes, when she is inducted into the IHS Athletic Hall of Fame on March 5, 2016 for her outstanding softball career. Moira shared, “My memories of IHS are nothing short of wonderful. The high school years are transformative ones, and the academic and athletic support I received from the teachers, coaches, counselors and clergy contributed immensely to the person I am today. They were amazing role models and I try to emulate them in all facets of my life.” The Deakins are a shining example of why Immaculate High School feels like a family, and you can bet they are excited about the upcoming 50th Anniversary events. “I hope that Immaculate lives on for another 50+ years, so that future generations can reap the benefits of this special place,” Moira enthused. We are grateful for their unyielding support!

Deirdre Dolan Nesline ‘79, a move manager/declutter professional, is the owner of Smooth Transitions of Connecticut & Florida. Her business assists individuals & their families through the process of right-sizing the home, organizing, remodeling and aging-in-place. Deirdre and her husband David divide their time between Connecticut and Florida. Deirdre has been a long-time member, and two-time former President of the IHS Alumni Association!
Andrea Baker ‘84 lives in NYC and is on the committee for the Inner-City Scholarship Fund. Andrea has also been on the committee for Muscular Dystrophy ‘A Tast of Down Under,’ which helps to send kids to summer camp.
Dave ‘87 and Michelle (Mohasci) ‘87 Kase live in Apex, NC with their four children. Dave has been a corporate pilot since retiring from the Air Force and will join American Airlines as a pilot this summer.
Jen (Merkel) Lipari ‘89 launched her own event planning company called Signature Productions LLC, specializing in event consulting, planning & productions. In addition to planning corporate galas, fundraisers and weddings, Jen finds time to participate in IHS’s Career Day (pictured), assist with her class reunion and help to plan IHS’s 50th Anniversary. Jen lives in New Milford with her husband, Gaspare and their two children, Alex and Megan.

On May 28th, Colonel Andy Morgado ‘90 assumed command of the 3rd Brigade, US Army Cadet Command. Andy’s Brigade is headquartered in Chicago and is responsible for the Senior and Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs in a ten state area of the midwest. “This is an incredible and humbling opportunity. It is an honor to assist in the process of educating and developing young men and women that will go on and defend our nation and serve the community as leaders.”
Moira Kenny ‘09 recently completed the Boston Marathon. She ran track and cross country at Immaculate, before attending and running at Boston College. She is currently finishing her masters in Severe Special Education at B.C., as well as working at a school for children with multiple disabilities.
2010’s Jennifer Daily ‘10 graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a BBA in Finance and a BA in Economics. She is currently backpacking through Europe this summer, before beginning her job at Deloitte Consulting in Chicago in September. Legacies A Family Tradition Immaculate High School has become a tradition for many of our families. Eight members of the Class of 2015 are considered “legacies,” or students having one or more parents who graduated from Immaculate. These second generation students know that their parents wanted them to have the same gift of a Catholic secondary school education that they received as Mustangs. This brings a wonderful sense of tradition to our school and we look forward to seeing the number of legacy students continue to grow!
