The hallmark of an IHS education is a roll-up-your-sleeves approach to learning that takes you from campus to communities where you can make a real difference. IHS faculty members don’t simply teach what they know, they shape what is known, and they inspire and empower their students to do the same.

Intellectual curiosity is promoted and transforming new knowledge to make our world a better place is encouraged. Sean McCoy ’16, was selected as one of the top 30 high school juniors in CT and received the prestigious Governor’s Scholars Award. Drew Valentine ’15, was recognized by the State of Connecticut African-American Affairs Commissions as The Youth of the Year.
Making A Difference Finding the confidence to express one’s self begins with taking personal risks and complementing academic abilities with other interests. Katy Franquiera ‘15 and Andrea Rivera-Luna ‘15 were awarded the CT High School Fine Arts Award.
Empowerment Being an Immaculate High School student means being empowered to be the best you can be. Belonging, sharing and having high expectations of personal performance is supported. Immaculate Girls Soccer team won their first Class L State Championship. Paige Davis ’15 scored both goals and was awarded All-American for girls soccer. Lacrosse and hockey player, Maeve Reilly ’15 and tennis and cross country runner, Nick Hatcher ‘15 were named CIAC Scholar Athlete award winners.

The English Department promotes engagement of the individual through group inquiry and personal analysis while fostering an appreciation for creative expression of one’s ideas through reading, writing and oratorical activities. Using an inquiry-based approach, students are encouraged to examine and analyze the work of authors, debating context, meaning, and style. Effective public speaking skills, rhetoric, and dramatic conventions are demonstrated in class presentations and theatrical productions.
The Visual and Performing Arts are essential to obtaining a fully- comprehensive education as they encourage reflecting on cultural heritages and perception of self.
While seeking new ways to solve problems, teachers provide the opportunity for students to identify processes through experiences including flipped classroom and inquiry-based learning strategies.
Immaculate students are recognized for their musical and artistic talents through the Tri-M Music Honor Society, the CT Student Film Festival, HALO awards and more.
Students are challenged to work together to solve problems using traditional methods coupled with innovative significance. Math is less about memorizing and more about understanding and applying equations, formulas and patterns.

High school students face many personal and academic challenges. Our physical education program is designed to promote acquiring lifetime skills through fitness, sport, knowledge and attitudes that contribute to a student’s optimal well-being.
What does it mean to be a student in our Catholic school? It means synthesizing authentic humanity with faith. As a result, the richness of our religion program transcends to all subject areas. Students not only learn about the history and beliefs of our Catholic faith, but are asked how their faith, whether Catholic, Christian or other, is their moral compass in life.
Sports medicine students learned the essential principles of sports injuries and medical emergencies. Our new Biomedical Science program engages students in humanitarian inquiry and awareness of forensics, entomology, DNA identification, scientific analysis and transferring of viruses throughout the world. Students have made their gained knowledge relevant volunteering at Danbury Hospital and other health agencies.

Our social studies program focuses on human relationships, materialisms, cultures, justice, interfaith studies, economy and the impact leaders of the world have had on social freedoms. Students analyze current world events with the purpose of understanding how current decision-making and other trends will impact their future.
Technology is shaping the world in which we now live. In order to best prepare students for the ever-increasing need to be knowledgeable in current technology programming and applications, the programs offered include understanding the moral and ethical responsibilities associated with the use of technology.
As globalization, mobility and communication increases, learning a world language becomes more critical. Our program allows students the ability to step inside the mind and context of another culture with the intent to provide them with intercultural understandings.

During the freshman year, counselors help students make a successful transition to high school both academically and socially. Students meet together with their counselor in small groups to discuss transition issues and study skills. They also meet individually to review their academic progress. An Academic Support Program is available throughout the year that students can take advantage of during their study hall periods.
Counselors monitor academic progress and assist students to further define long-term goals. Counselors discuss the need for academic challenge and strong curriculum choices. Students meet as needed with their counselor for support and assistance in developing effective skills for coping with social and emotional issues impacting school life. Special programs are presented on different aspects of teen development. Students are also encouraged to participate in our Peer Leadership and Peer Mentoring Programs.
Emphasis is placed on continued academic achievement and the building of a strong and challenging academic profile. Students further explore their personalities, skills and interests in terms of college majors and career options. NAVIANCE, a web-based career and college search program is introduced. Counselors continue to provide individual support to students on personal, social and emotional issues. Special programming/activities focus on promoting positive peer relationships, making positive life-style choices and performing acts of kindness for the greater community.
Students are guided in developing a senior academic schedule that best supports their college/career goals and maximizes their academic potential. Families are also guided through the challenging college application process with a great deal of personal time and attention. Counselors coach students regarding applications, resumes, interview technique and support students through the emotional challenges of the process. Individual student interviews are conducted to enhance counselor recommendations. Students are also encouraged to maximize their extra-curricular/leadership opportunities.

I Am Faithful CAMPUS MINISTRY Immaculate teens grow in three key areas: sacramental, social and service, in order to build a community whose members partake of and appreciate their Catholic faith, as well as respect and care for each other and those in need. Sacramental activities begin with a focus on the Eucharist, which Saint John Paul II said was the way to draw youth to the Church. Adoration is available daily. Additional activities include special holiday and holy day school-wide Masses, a prayer service for 12/14, class retreats, a Lenten penance service and opportunities for confession, plus teaching Masses for the religion classes where topics this year have included sacred traditions, the history and theological basis of Lent, and the rosary.
Social activities provide fellowship in a peer group that shares a faith commitment. Outings to ball games, concerts, the March for Life, hosting Spirit Sports and Snacks for partner parochial school students and entering a float in the Danbury St. Patrick’s Day Parade not only create community within IHS but also help integrate IHS into the local community.
John Paul II said we begin to discover our self-worth through Service. Campus Ministry offers students many opportunities to give service whether it be at the Morning Glory breakfast program at Dorothy Day House in Danbury, the Midnight Run program in NYC, Housatonic Habitat for Humanity in New Milford and Danbury, or rake and bake days in local communities. Each service opportunity is filled to capacity with students.
I Am Talented ATHLETICS Immaculate High School competes in the SWC, a highly competitive conference in which our teams have had tremendous success. In 2014-15, fifteen teams qualified for both the SWC and State championships. Both the experienced athlete and the first time player can explore and develop their skills at Immaculate. Our coaches work with each student, helping them to find their niche in a new sport or to further excel in a familiar one; encouraging them to develop at their own pace to reach their personal full potential, which for some will mean contributing at the varsity level. Along the way, the team becomes like a family, where each member has a role and all support one another. Our players are student athletes – their studies come first and coaches encourage them to obtain academic support if they need it. A student must maintain academic eligibility to participate in interscholastic athletics – he or she may not have failed more than one course at the end of the preceding marking period. Immaculate boasts up-to-date athletic facilities on-campus and affiliation with high quality off-site locations.

I Am Talented FINE ARTS Fine Arts is the art of finding yourself! Nearly all IHS students participate in at least one or more visual arts or performing arts experience during their four years at Immaculate. The Fine Arts faculty is dedicated to encouraging each student to use and develop his or her talents to their personal best, often with unexpectedly gratifying results as the individual or group stretches to prepare and present amazing art works, music and theater. In the visual arts, students develop their artistic process and refine the use of media, producing works of beauty and intrigue. The Annual Art Show fills the hallways with the fruits of their imagination and skill. Art students also contribute scenery and specialty items for the school’s stage productions. Twice a year, our gymnasium and front lobby are transformed into the venue for our lauded drama and musical productions. Immaculate productions have earned many nominations and won awards at both the Connecticut High School Music Theater Awards and the HALO Awards, and have received many positive reviews in local and regional press. Our productions showcase the abilities of experienced student performers as well as those of students whose talents are newly discovered through the mentoring and encouragement of the faculty and their fellow students. In addition, students exercise non-performance skills on props, costuming, lighting and set preparation. Other performance opportunities include the Veterans Day and Christmas concerts presented by our school mixed chorus, concert choir, guitar ensemble and concert band, the Annual Cabaret for which any student in the school can audition, and monthly coffee houses at which any student can present music, comedy and drama in a casual setting. Our new sound recording studio is available for students to practice and record original work as well as the work of famous artists.

CLUBS & ACTIVITIES Immaculate has helped me grow into a young adult both spiritually and academically. Immaculate has been the place where I’ve made numerous lifetime friendships and I feel prepared for college and the career world thanks to teachers who have encouraged and supported me to enroll in advanced classes. Serving breakfast at Morning Glory and participating in the Rake ‘n Bake has strengthened my faith. As a cheerleader, I am actively engaged in our school spirit. Go Mustangs!
In addition to my commitment to IHS Soccer, I am Treasurer of the National Honor Society and am able to give back to my community. At Immaculate, peers, teachers and coaches support you with trying something totally new, something out of your comfort zone. During my junior year my friends persuaded me to audition for the annual school musical. The new friendships I made and the fun I had with something I never imagined doing made it one of my best decisions as a student at Immaculate. My experience at Immaculate has been life-changing. The diverse academic courses have allowed me to explore and foster my interests to pursue my passion for art. As President of International Club, I established friendships with students from around the world. I was able to achieve Distinguished Honors since my freshman year and, as a result of my commitment and outstanding support of faculty and staff, I will continue to pursue my dreams as a student at American University, Washington, D.C.

Megan Mitchell ‘10
Gavin Buckley ‘10
Megan Mitchell ’10 is the morning anchor and reporter for NBC North Dakota News. Her show, Country Morning Today is the top-rated morning news show in the western North Dakota region. Megan is a graduate of Emerson College with a BS in Broadcast Journalism. While at Emerson, Megan received the EVVY Award, “Outstanding Television Personality,” for her work on “Good Morning Emerson,” the college’s morning news show and a New England Emmy Award for Executive Producing a half-hour documentary about the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Megan credits Immaculate’s family-like setting for allowing her to participate in many activities such as lacrosse, the musicals and student council, which gave her a sense of value and community. Access to and support from faculty fostered a complete transformation of her previous, poor academic record and habits, allowing her to get into her dream college. The encouragement from both faculty and students to pursue her dreams by creating videos for the school’s TVs and website started her on a career path that she’s passionate about every single day.
Gavin Buckley ‘10 is an Experienced Associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers. At Immaculate, he developed a work ethic, discovered a passion for community service, and learned to be a leader, all of which prepared him to excel at Villanova and begin his career at one of the worlds largest accounting firms. Gavin played soccer and lacrosse, ran cross country and track, was a leader on the wrestling team, participated in musicals and the Ju Jitsu club and was a member of National Honor Society and the Key Club service organizations. He was active in the Midnight Run program and took AP courses that helped him meet the requirement for his CPA at Villanova. Wanting to give back to his school, Gavin did his Eagle Scout project at Immaculate - a beautification project that included building benches, which are still in use by Mustang soccer and baseball fans. Gavin tells us, “My Immaculate experience helped me to thrive in college. The challenging course work, more than prepared me for the demanding honors classes at Villanova. I found it natural to bring my passion for community service with me to college and beyond. When I look at my life, it’s easy to see how my IHS experiences had such lasting impacts on who I am today.”

Good news, there is many ways to make an Immaculate High School education affordable. IHS offers academic and need-based scholarships and financial aid.
Each year, the Admissions Office recruits a highly competitive group of 125–130 domestic and international students in our freshman class. In addition, Immaculate High School seeks transfer students to enter grades 10 and 11.
