WHY PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION?

Three main types of professional registration for graduate engineers

CEng

IEng

Chartered Engineers develop creative solutions, either in the form of new technologies, or improved production techniques and management methods.

Incorporated Engineers often work in operational roles, maintaining and managing technology applications so they work as efficiently as possible.

EngTech Engineering Technicians apply proven techniques and procedures to solve practical engineering problems.

Build your plan Planning your route to professional registration can significantly shorten the time it takes to get there and ensure your development is structured around your career objectives. To build an effective plan, you first have to know your current competence and academic levels, and what you’re aiming for. There are specific tools within the programme that help you to do this.

Professional registration is the globally-recognised gold standard for engineers. Professionally registered engineers – whether Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Engineering Technician (EngTech) – are widely-respected professionals, enjoy greater status and typically earn more than their non-registered counterparts. Professional registration is an important career objective and the next major milestone in your development. It can help you develop the skills you need to follow your chosen career path. Your Associate membership is designed to help you achieve professional registration as efficiently as possible. The tools and support the Institution offers are delivered through a comprehensive online portal; Career Developer.

Introducing Career Developer Career Developer is your portal for accessing the Institution’s professional development tools. It supports you throughout your career. You can use it to track your initial professional development, apply for professional registration and to maintain essential records of your ongoing CPD once you have achieved your chosen status. The tools and support within Career Developer are divided into four different sections. One of these – CPD Tools will be useful to you once you have achieved professional registration. The other sections are all specific to achieving professional registration with the Institution. How you use Career Developer depends on whether you or your company are registered on a specific scheme.

Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS) Learn more about Career Developer at imeche.org/careerdeveloper

Guide to Membership2017_aw.indd 4-6

MPDS is an Accredited company scheme which follows an agreed structure to help developing engineers reach the competence requirements for registration. If your company is one of the 300 Accredited for

MPDS, you will benefit from guidance from a professional engineer mentor and advice on meeting the registration requirements at work. You can find out if your company has an MPDS programme at imeche.org/mpds

Supported Registration Scheme (SRS) SRS is an independent scheme designed to provide a disciplined and regular reporting framework if your company does not have an accredited MPDS in place. If you have a mentor from within your company, you may wish to follow this route to registration. You’ll work with your mentor to identify the relevant competences covered by your job role and any other opportunities you can undertake to develop and record the competence requirements for registration. To register for SRS, visit imeche.org/srs If you are not enrolled on either MPDS or SRS, you can still pursue professional registration with the Institution using the Developing Engineers Programme.

THE DEVELOPING ENGINEERS PROGRAMME The Developing Engineers Programme makes your journey towards professional registration much easier. It gives you the tools, support and guidance you need to achieve professional registration as efficiently as possible. Its flexible framework fits around your schedule and the demands of your career. To achieve professional registration, you need the appropriate work experience for your chosen category. This work experience is assessed by measuring how you meet certain core competences. Demonstrating you meet these competences requires regular monitoring and recording of your professional development. Using the tools within the Developing Engineers Programme enables you to assess where you currently stand against the requirements for your chosen category, build a plan to meet your development targets and track your progress against that plan.

Qualifications Checker Qualifications Checker determines if your academic qualifications meet the requirements for professional registration. CEng, IEng or EngTech? The Guidance section of the Developing Engineers Programme includes comprehensive descriptions of the different registration categories and the full competence requirements for each. Benchmarking Tool The Benchmarking tool assesses your current competences to determine where you stand against the Engineering Council requirements for your chosen category of professional registration. Once you know your starting point, and the category you’re aiming for, the next step is to build your first development plan. SWOT Analysis Completing a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) analysis will help you to set objectives. Goal-setting Tool Use the Goal-setting tool to formalise specific competence and professional development goals that you will be able to track your progress against.

Activity Log This user-friendly tool allows you to record your professional activities and monitor progress against your development goals. It also comes in handy when you’re required to demonstrate your skills and experience in job applications. Document Vault Document Vault is a secure online storage area for all of the important files relating to your professional development.

Dedicated support The Developing Engineers Programme includes other dedicated support resources designed for you. Features such as the Developing Engineers LinkedIn group, a careers support section and workshops on becoming professionally registered can support you on your journey.

You should begin using the Developing Engineers Programme as early as possible to make the most of the benefits on offer: • Log in to the Developing Engineers Programme and set up your profile at imeche.org/developingengineers • Use the Qualifications Checker tool to assess your academic qualifications • Choose your preferred category of professional registration • Review the competence requirements for that category

Track your progress

• Use the Benchmarking tool to assess your current standing

Recording your ongoing development is essential to achieving professional registration and maintaining your professional status once you’ve earned it.

• Set your first competence development goal • Join the Developing Engineers group on LinkedIn
