From the

Board President I am so grateful for your generous support this year. Please take a moment to read the vignettes of our alumni featured in this report. They are just a few of the hundreds of successful HDS graduates who have excelled at top notch high schools and universities, many of whom have also gone on to achieve advanced professional degrees. They are now highly successful and innovative leaders in their fields. They recognize that their success began at HDS where they received an outstanding academic foundation in an environment that fosters strong character and personal responsibility as well as creative problem solving. They like those before them, have benefited from generous donors like you.

* ALUMNI ASSOCIATION REPRESENTATIVE ** PRESIDENT OF THE PARENT ASSOCIATION

As we prepare to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Harford Day School, I want to assure you that we remain committed to providing the excellent foundation that will allow current and future students to succeed. It was my pleasure to award diplomas to our graduates this spring, all of whom are now attending their first choice high school. Graduation speaker and alum Kate Jordan ’94 told us that it was Harford Day School that provided her with all of the “tools” necessary for her success. I hope you will consider supporting the next generation of HDS graduates with your gift to the Annual Fund. Help us ensure that all of our graduates have the tools necessary to build their foundation of success. Remember it all begins at Harford Day, and it all begins with you.

Sincerely,

Fred Kuhn, M.D.

From the

Head of School Dear Harford Day School Families and Community, At Harford Day, we are fortunate to enjoy a culture of giving and support, providing us with vital financial resources every independent school needs to thrive and grow. Generations of parents, trustees, alumni, grandparents, faculty and friends have participated in Harford Day’s Annual Fund, with a spirit of generosity that makes us proud. Last year, total giving swelled to over $690,000, a new record, and we received a very generous anonymous gift for major projects of over $300,000. Because of that gift, on opening day, our students enjoyed a communal lunch in our new dining hall and our middle-school teachers were provided state-of-the-art tablets; next year, students will be welcomed to a new STEM lab and a greenhouse. I write with these examples because the Annual Fund, often described as a means to cover the “gap” between tuition and actual operating costs, is in reality so much more than that. Do Annual Fund dollars contribute to the general operating budget? Yes. But, we do not aim those resources at keeping our lights on and the boilers running. We do not seek additional dollars to “get by,” but because we endeavor to abundantly prepare our students to face high school and life, having experienced every possible advantage. Contributions come in all sizes and all gifts and tell the School, its constituents, and potential major-gift donors that you support what we do. Participating in the Annual Fund is an invitation to be part of something larger than yourself and, to those who participated in 2016-17, including 100% of our Trustees, 100% of our faculty, and 66% of our current parents, I wholeheartedly and graciously thank you. Sincerely,

Gray Smith, Ed.D. Go draGoNS!

It all starts at Harford Day School. Our Mission The aim of the Harford Day School is to provide disciplined, individualized education by stimulating and fostering the development of each child so that he or she will acquire sound habits of thought and expression and the best traits of personal character. It seeks to encourage respect for hard work and the disposition to do required tasks well by reason of honest effort. Besides thorough training in the essential skills, the program offers each student the opportunity to develop independence, imagination, curiosity, and responsibility.

Harford Day students have always been expected to participate actively in their education and to develop responsibility, independence, perseverance and integrity during the learning process. The value of our program is reflected in the success of our students after they leave Harford Day and move on to other schools, colleges, and beyond. While academic success is important at Harford Day, teaching values and developing positive character traits are just as vital to our mission. Our alumni are living examples of the School’s mission in progress. They are inspirations for current and potential families. But don’t take our word for it; see for yourself what our alumni have to say...

Make every day count. 4
