Our Mission the aim of the harford day school is to provide disciplined, individualized education by stimulating and fostering the development of each child so that he or she will acquire sound habits of thought and expression and the best traits of personal character. it seeks to encourage respect for hard work and the disposition to do required tasks well by reason of honest effort. Annual Fund: Putting the Extra in Extraordinary

Dear Harford Day School Families and Community,

Board President Thanks to all who generously support the Annual Fund at Harford Day School. There are many ways to measure the impact of your generosity on our children. I like to think your contribution allows us to put the extra in extraordinary. It provides the extra attention that comes from small class sizes. It funds a variety of extracurriculars and courses not available at all schools; including public speaking, middle school musicals, early childhood foreign language, competitive athletics and smArts Week to name just a few. These programs give our children extra opportunities to successfully explore and master new challenges. Additionally, the Annual Fund supports training and professional development for our extraordinary faculty.

As a parent of two Harford Day School alumni, I have witnessed first-hand how an extraordinary HDS education provides the foundation for success.

Head of School The Annual Report recognizes and thanks all of the members of our school community who made a gift to the Annual Fund between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016. On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff I sincerely thank you for your participation and generous support.

Generous contributions to the Annual Fund help to fill the gap between tuition and actual cost, enabling the School to say YES when it considers funding for anything from faculty professional development to classroom technology to maintaining our beautiful campus. Participation in the Annual Fund shows support for the School, which in turn assists the Advancement Office in writing for capital grants from philanthropic foundations.

In 2015-2016, both the Board of Trustees and the faculty achieved 100% participation in the Annual Fund. Parent participation has risen significantly over the past two years to 65 % last year. This year we are aiming to reach 70% participation by current parents and raise $200,000 annual fund dollars.

So we can focus on additional fundraising opportunities, our goal is to reach these marks by December 1, 2016. Please consider making your tax-deductible gift or pledge today and “thank you� in advance for your generosity, support, and commitment to Harford Day School.

What is the Annual Fund?

Harford Day’s Annual Fund provides critical unrestricted financial support for the school’s operating expenses.

The Annual Fund is the primary way for alumni, parents, grandparents, former parents and friends to support Harford Day. It allows the school to fully live its mission and achieve its vision by providing funds that bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of a Harford Day education.

Gifts to the Annual Fund have a tremendous impact on our ability to sustain the school’s exceptional faculty, programs, and facilities for the next generation. Every gift, every year, makes a difference.

Our hope is that all members of the community will participate to the best of their ability.

Why not set the tuition so that it covers all of the School’s costs?

Private school Boards of trustees typically set tuition rates below the actual cost-per-student to assist all families in affording the independent school experience. harford day is no exception as the average per-student cost in 2015-2016 was $18,000, while average tuition was $15,170. the gap is covered by interest from investments, auxiliary income, and gifts to the school. the annual fund has a dual role, both offsetting the gap and providing the school with funds that enable it to say yes to things like faculty professional development, ďŹ eld trips, new technology, updates to the facility and campus, and special programs.

How much should I give? every gift, regardless of size is very important to harford day. the amount you choose to give is up to you. We ask that you make a meaningful gift based on your personal situation. your gift shows that you feel a connection to the school and count yourself as a member of our community. as trite as it may sound, every dollar counts and each gift does make a difference. the level of one’s generosity to the annual fund has an instant and direct impact on harford day’s ability to provide a level of excellence unmatched in harford county. leadership gifts are those of $1,000 or more. to show its gratitude to leadership level donors the school hosts special events for this group throughout the school year.

Why participate?

We understand that within a school year you are presented with many opportunities to give. Your participation in the Annual Fund is essential to the success of our community.

The Annual Fund unites the entire school community behind the common goal of supporting our students. The average Annual Fund participation at comparable AIMS schools is over 70%. Harford Day’s parent participation has climbed six points over the past two years, but came in at 65% in 2015-2016, several

points lower than the average.

Similarly, the size of the average parent gift has grown over the past two years, but is still $109 below the average gift at a comparable AIMS school.

Won’t you join us in catching our competitors and raising our participation and generosity levels to equal or surpass those at similar schools?

For the second year in a row, faculty and board of trustees’ participation rate was 100%.

Financial Overview

Operating an independent school requires more than tuition alone. Our budget relies on successful fundraising efforts and other contributions.

Harford Day is committed to prudent

We ask all parents and other constituents to contribute to the Annual Fund at the beginning of every school year. Your contribution provides direct support to the educational programs that families, trustees, almuni, and faculty have built and sustained together for 58 years. Parents are also invited to support fundraising events and activities sponsored by our Parents’ Association, but the first gift should be to the Annual Fund.

financial planning. As an independent school, we receive no financial support from federal, state, or local governments. As a secular school, Harford Day does not receive any financial support from a church or religious affiliate.The sole sources of revenue are tuition, fundraising, inerest and dividends, and proceeds from special programs. Like all independent schools, Harford Day must raise additional funds beyond tuition revenue to balance the budget and provide for the future.

What’s the difference between an unrestricted and a restricted gift to the Annual Fund? unrestricted gifts go directly to the school’s annual operating costs. restricted gifts may only be used to fund items or areas specified by the donor, for example the endowment. at this time in the school’s history, unrestricted gifts are of greatest value and we strongly encourage donors to give unrestricted contributions. as the school seeks to meet its long-term financial goals, restricted gifts, especially gifts to strengthen the endowment, will become more and more important.

I support events at the School. Why do I also need to give to the Annual Fund? the annual fund is our biggest fundraising event. all families are asked to participate not only to raise funds but also to show support for the school. it is the fundraising metric that philanthropic foundations and aiMs (our accrediting organization) use to measure our level of parent support. unlike our events which may change from time to time and may be more or less proďŹ table from one year to the next, the annual fund, as it is in all aiMs schools, will always be our main fundraising event and the one most readily counted on for a stable and reliable contribution to our operating budget. after enrolling at harford day, participating in the annual fund is the most meaningful expression of a family’s commitment to the school.

Community Support

Educating a child requires an exceptional faculty, a curriculum that develops fluency, creativity and competency, and the generous support of parents.

Since its founding in 1957, each Harford Day family has been encouraged to actively participate in the school community through volunteerism and financial support beyond tuition. We rely on the support and involvement of not

only current families, but our entire community including former parents, grandparents, trustees, alumni, faculty and staff. It is through a highly engaged community that we can continue to offer a first-rate and well-rounded

educational experience. The facilities and grounds that your children enjoy today were made possible by generations of Harford Day families who came before and gave generously to the School’s advancement.

Through volunteer opportunities, special events and fundraising efforts, the school provides a variety of ways to become involved.

How else can I give?

Participation in the Annual Fund is just one way to support Harford Day. PLANNED GIVING Depending on your circumstances and the type of planned gift you choose, you can receive income from your gift while at the same time, save on taxes and pass assets to the school tax-free. Charitable IRA rollovers and charitable remainder trusts are two of the many options available.

MATCHING GIFTS Matching gifts from your employer are a great way to double the impact of your gift to Harford Day. Please check with your company to see if they offer matching gifts, or let us know if we can assist you with this process. Remember that gifts from spouses and retirees may also be eligible.

GIFTS OF STOCK Gifts of securities, including stocks, bonds, and mutual funds may be transferred through your brocker to the School’s gift account at Brown Advisory.

My child graduated from Harford Day. Why should I continue to make Annual Fund gifts to the school? one of our former parents provided the best answer: “every day we see evidence of how well harford day prepared our children for life. they have confidence that they can achieve results they had not thought possible, through diligence and discipline. they are respectful of others and comfortable in many different social situations. simply stated, i like and respect the adults my children are becoming, and i than harford day for the important role it played.”

Put simply, to insure that future generations of students experience the same or higher level of excellence as those who came before, we continue to need your support. as an age 3 to grade 8 school, competing for gifts against our graduates’ high schools and colleges makes fundraising all the more difficult. We are very grateful for our parents and alumni who continue to remember the formative pillars of their education that were developed here.

As a parent, I give my time as a volunteer. Why does the school also ask me to give to the Annual Fund? your volunteer efforts are very important to harford day and very much appreciated. the strong partnership we have with our parents is one of our greatest assets. Volunteering is an expression of your commitment to your child’s educational life at the school. Participating in the annual fund by making a gift, whatever the amount, is another way you can demonstrate the value you place on your child’s education. also, the percentage of parents who participate in annual Giving sends an important message to our community about the value our parents place on a harford day education.

Volunteerism not only helps build a stronger program, but it also builds a stronger community. Volunteers are a huge resource and support base for the school.

When you volunteer, not only the school will gain from your involvement—you will, too.

The interaction with teachers, administrators and other families will help you gain a better understanding of your child’s education at Harford Day and build closer community ties.

Volunteer opportunities include joining the parent association, serving as a room parent, supporting committee work for school events, bringing your expertise to the classroom, and acting as an ambassador by promoting the school in the surrounding communities.

Leading by example, parents, alumni and friends can contribute their time and make a difference at Harford Day.

THE FREDERICK MANNION MEMORIAL FUND this fund was established in 1987 by virginia mannion in memory of her son, frederick, who was a member of the class of 1966. frederick mannion was a successful ophthalmologist who credited Harford day for preparing him for his later academic achievements. the fund provides financial aid to an incoming sixth grader who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and promise. the award remains with the student through his or her middle school years and is given to a new recipient upon the graduation of the previous mannion scholar. growth of the fund has enabled it to provide additional support for other academically gifted students.

THE JONATHAN D. PEVERLEY MEMORIAL FUND this fund was established in 1981 by susan and sydney peverley in memory of their son, Jonathan, who was a member of the class of 1985. additional gifts were made to the fund in memory of sydney peverley. proceeds from the fund provide financial aid.

THE JOEL MITCHELL ’83 MEMORIAL FUND this fund was established in 1983 in memory of Joel mitchell, who was a member of the class of 1983 and harford day school

THE KLEIN FAMILY ENDOWMENT FUND this gift was established in 2011 with a lead gift by the ralph & shirley Klein Benevolent foundation. this fund contributes to the continued long-term maintenance of Harford day school’s buildings and grounds.

THE DRESHER FOUNDATION ENDOWMENT FUND this fund was established in 2005 by the dresher foundation. proceeds from this fund support Hds faculty professional development and financial aid.

THE HAROLD PIERSON ENDOWMENT FUND this fund was established in 2004 in memory of Harold pierson, who was the grandfather of Kristine pierson, a member of the class of 1994, and

andrew pierson, a member of the class of 2000. Because of Harold’s love for education and travel, proceeds from this fund are used to support Harford day’s field trips.

THE MIGNON CAMERON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND this fund was originally established in 1990. after mignon cameron’s death in 2006, it was renamed in her honor. proceeds from this fund are used for financial aid.

THE NANCY RAKACZKY ENDOWMENT FUND this fund was established in 2004 in honor of nancy rakaczky’s 32year career as head of the Harford day kindergarten program. proceeds from the fund provide financial aid to kindergarten students.

THE KITTY REESE ENDOWMENT FUND this fund was established in 2008 in honor of Kitty reese who was a key volunteer in the early years of Hds and who remained connected to the school for over 40 years. proceeds from this fund are used to support general endowment.

THE ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP FUND in 1992, the alumni association established this fund to provide financial aid for children or siblings of alumni. the association started the fund using proceeds from its annual antique shows. several donors have made additional gifts.

THE ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS FUND the parent association established this fund in 2002 to bring a visiting

artist to Harford day each year. artists in the visual or performing arts help students develop an appreciation for the arts and establish connections between the arts and other areas of the curriculum. students have an opportunity to interact with an artist in an informal setting.

THE SARA BRUMFIELD POLK ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND this fund was established in 2005 in memory of Harford day’s founding head, sara Brumfield polk. proceeds from this fund are used for financial aid.

THE ESTHER BENNETT FUND this fund was established in 1983 following the retirement of longtime teacher and head-mistress esther Bennett. mrs. Bennett taught fifth grade from 1963 to 1979, when she became headmistress. proceeds from this fund provide financial aid.

THE REV. CHARLES K. RIEPE ENDOWMENT FUND this fund was established in 2004 by rev. charles K. riepe, a long-time friend of the school and former member of Harford day’s Board of trustees. proceeds from this fund provide faculty professional development.

THE WILLIAM DALLAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND this fund was established in 1972 by the dallam family in memory of William dallam iv, who was president of the Board of trustees at the time of his death. mr. dallam’s four children graduated from Harford day school. additional gifts were made to the fund in memory of his wife, Hope Harlan dallam. proceeds from the fund are used for financial aid.
