Calling All Artists of All Ages! Participants of all ages have the opportunity to submit 2D artwork to be selected as part of a public exhibition displayed at IMAS.
IMAS invites the community of the Rio Grande Valley to participate in its 2015 juried show Art Flavorings – Journey of Local Artists. Participants of all ages have the opportunity to submit 2D artwork to be selected as part of a public exhibition that will be displayed at the museum’s Welcome Pavilion and Discovery Pavilion from August 10 to October 17, 2015.
This year’s art show theme will highlight the “Flavor of the RGV”. In essence, what gives the Rio Grande Valley its special flavor? This can include the region’s
natural landscape, animals, experiences, culture, food, and people. Special highlights of the selected artworks will be featured on the IMAS >> CONT. PAGE TWO

website and the museum’s social media outlets. Art Flavorings – Journey of Local Artists hopes to provide the community a forum to showcase local talent and inspire budding artists. Submission deadline is Sunday, July 5, 2015. Submissions are currently being accepted via email, mail or in person at the museum. New Membership Upgrades effective July 1st Effective July 1, 2015, we will be upgrading our membership program. All current members will receive the new membership incentives at their current level of membership. In addition, every member will be receiving membership cards in the mail. In March a newly redesigned, user-friendly, and mobile-responsive website with the help from our friends at ImageHouse Media. The museum’s social media platforms have reached over 10,000 followers combined! FUNDRAISERS
The 7th Annual “A Night at the Brew-seum” sold out once again, and for one spring evening in April, over 1,300 guests were able to enjoy samples from over 125 beers and delicacies from 18 local eateries, including House.Wine. & Bistro, SALT-New American Table, Spork, Lansky’s & Brats, and El Divino.

IMAS UPDATE IMAS GIFT SHOP MAKEOVER
We have changed the look of our gift shop. Our team has worked hard to create additional wall space for T-shirts, popular clothing, and costumes. As well as new and exciting hands-on activites that correspond to our current exhbits. The gift shop inside IMAS has slowly, but surely grown into one of McAllen’s most popular stops to shop for unique, handmade, and educational gifts. We have people from all over the Rio Grande Valley, as far as Brownsville, call in advance to check for certain items that are exclusive to the IMAS gift shop.

On January 29, 2015, IMAS Board and staff welcomed the museum’s new President, Julie Johnson. Ms. Johnson joins us from the Michigan Science Center where she was the Vice President of Education and Engagement. Ms. Johnson has worked in the museum field for 10 years; she was the Director of the Detroit Children’s Museum, and held leadership positions at the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum in Chicago, and the Public Museum of Grand Rapids in Michigan. Before starting her museum career she was a certified teacher and taught for 15 years in California. In the past four months Ms. Johnson has worked with the Board and staff at IMAS to update the building, bring in new science and art exhibitions, and has revamped some of the programs offered at the museum. “Two of the biggest changes are in summer

camps and membership. We are now offering weekly science and art camps for ages 4-14. We have also added new membership options and have become members of the Association of Science and Technology Centers. This allows our members to have free or reduced admission to over 250 institutions nationwide,” stated Ms. Johnson. Ms. Johnson is excited about all the possibilities and looks forward to seeing and meeting the IMAS members, visitors, teachers, and school groups that visit IMAS this summer and fall.
This summer many new educational items ranging from educational posters to interactive books, hands-on activity kits, and much more will be available to the public. Additionally, we work closely with local aritsts and vendors who help us offer items of high quality value that are not available everywhere. Our goal is to provide new and exciting educational products that inspire one to think, learn, create, and most importantnly, to have FUN!
